İngiliz Dili Meslek Yüksekokulu (İDMYO) tarafından uygulanan İngilizce Yeterlik ve Seviye Tespit Sınavı
(COPE) iki aşamadan oluşmaktadır. Sınavın I. ve II. Aşaması ile ilgili detaylı bilgi kılavuzda bulunmaktadır.

I. AŞAMA SINAVI’NA GİRECEK ÖĞRENCİLER İÇİN ÖNEMLİ BİLGİ

İngilizce Yeterlik ve Seviye Tespit Sınavının her iki aşamasına da girmek zorunludur.
Sınavlara girmeyen öğrencilere İngilizce Hazırlık Programında sınıf verilmeyecektir.

I. Aşama Sınavı farklı seviyede İngilizce bilgi ve becerisini ölçen çoktan seçmeli 200 sorudan
oluşmaktadır.

Her soru için beş cevap seçeneği bulunmaktadır. Her dört yanlış cevap bir doğru cevabı
götürmektedir.

Cevaplar optik forma işaretlenir. Soru kitapçığına işaretlenen cevaplar kabul edimeyecektir.

Öğrencilerin en geç saat 09.30'da sınav yerlerine gelmiş olmaları gerekmektedir.

Saat 10.30’dan sonra gelenler sınava alınmayacaktır.

Öğrencilerin sınava gelirken getirmeleri gereken belgeler:
o Sınav giriş belgesi (2016 girişli öğrenciler için);
o Kayıt sırasında verilen Bilkent Üniversitesi Öğrenci Kimliği;
o Resmi bir kimlik (nüfus cüzdanı, ehliyet veya pasaport).

Cep telefonu, elektronik cihazlar, kol saati ve çanta gibi kişisel eşyalar sınav binasına
alınmayacaktır. Öğrencilerin belirtilen eşyaları yanlarında getirmemeleri önemle duyurulur.

Kurşun kalem, silgi ve kalemtraş üniversite tarafından verileceğinden öğrencilerin bunları
yanlarında getirmelerine gerek yoktur.

I. Aşama Sınavı’nı geçen öğrenciler, II. Aşama Sınavı’na girmeye hak kazanır.

I. Aşama Sınav sonuçları sınav günü saat 18:00’de internet üzerinden duyurulacaktır.

II. AŞAMA SINAVI’NA GİRECEK ÖĞRENCİLER İÇİN ÖNEMLİ BİLGİ

İngilizce Yeterlik ve Seviye Tespit Sınavının her iki aşamasına da girmek zorunludur.
Sınavlara girmeyen öğrencilere İngilizce Hazırlık Programında sınıf verilmeyecektir.

II. Aşama Yazılı Sınavı dört bölümden oluşur (Okuma, Dinleme, Dil Bilgisi ve Yazma). Her
bölümde belirli bir seviyede İngilizce bilgi ve becerisine sahip olan öğrencilerin
cevaplayabileceği sorular vardır.

Sınavın okuma ve dinleme bölümlerinde çoktan şeçmeli sorular bulunmaktadır. Her soru
için 5 cevap seçeneği bulunmakta, her 4 yanlış cevap bir doğru cevabı götürmektedir.

Cevaplar optik forma işaretlenir. Yazma bölümü hariç soru kitapçığına işaretlenen cevaplar
dikkate alınmayacaktır.

Öğrencilerin en geç saat 09:00'da sınav yerlerine gelmiş olmaları gerekmektedir.

Saat 09:45’ten sonra sınava öğrenci alınmayacaktır.


Cep telefonu, elektronik cihazlar, kol saati ve çanta gibi kişisel eşyalar sınav binasına
alınmayacaktır. Öğrencilerin belirtilen eşyaları yanlarında getirmemeleri önemle duyurulur.

II. Aşama Sınavı’nı geçen öğrenciler, ders kaydı için bölüm sekreterliğine başvurmalıdır.

İngilizce Yeterlik ve Seviye Tespit II. Aşama Sınavı beş bölümden oluşmaktadır: Okuma, Dinleme, Dil
Bilgisi, Yazma ve Konuşma.
II. Aşama Sınavı’nın yazılı bölümü, aşağıda belirtildiği gibi, hem çoktan seçmeli hem de açık uçlu
sorulardan oluşmaktadır.
Okuma Sınavı (1 saat 20 dakika):
Okuma sınavı farklı okuma parçalarına sahip üç bölümden oluşur ve çoktan seçmeli sorular içerir.
Okuma parçaları çeşitli uzunluklardadır. Okuma sınavı ana fikri anlama, detaylı okuma, çıkarım
yapabilme ve kelimelerin anlamını parçadan çıkarabilme becerilerini ölçer.
Yazma Sınavı 1 (30 dakika)
Yazma sınavının birinci bölümü öğrencilerin Okuma sınavındaki parçalardan birine dayandırılan bir
soruya, yaklaşık 150 kelimelik bir paragraf yazarak cevap vermelerini gerektirmektedir.
Dinleme Sınavı (1 saat):
Dinleme sınavı iki dinleme parçasından oluşur ve ana fikri anlama ve detayları takip edebilme ve
çıkarım yapabilme becerilerini ölçer. Öğrenciler dinlerken not alır ve dinleme parçaları bittikten
sonra verilen çoktan seçmeli soruları 25 dakika içinde cevaplarlar.
Her dinleme parçası bir defa dinlenir. İlk dinleme parçasının sonunda öğrencilerin aldıkları notları
gözden geçirebilmeleri için 30 saniyelik bir ara vardır.
Dil Bilgisi Sınavı (40 dakika):
Dil bilgisi sınavı üç bölümden oluşur. Öğrencilerin her bölümdeki okuma parçasının boşluklarını
uygun kelimelerle doldurması gerekmektedir.
Yazma Sınavı 2 (1 saat):
Yazma sınavının ikinci bölümünde öğrencilere iki konu seçeneği verilir ve öğrencilerin içlerinden
birini seçmesi istenir. Öğrenciler seçtikleri konu ile ilgili 350 kelimelik bir kompozisyon yazarlar.

Bilkent Üniversitesi öğrenci kimliği veya Öğrenci İşleri Müdürlüğü’nden 'Fotoğraflı Öğrenci
Belgesi' getirmeyen öğrenciler sınava giremez.

Konuşma sınavına girmeyen öğrenciler konuşma sınavından ‘SIFIR’ alırlar.

Öğrencilerin sınav zamanından 5 dakika önce sınav odasının önünde hazır olmaları gerekmektedir.

İngilizce Yeterlik ve Seviye Tespit Sınavının her iki aşamasına da girmek zorunludur. Sınavlara
girmeyen öğrencilere İngilizce Hazırlık Programında sınıf verilmeyecektir.
İngilizce Yeterlik ve Seviye Tespit I. ve II. Aşama Sınavı’nda yeterlik gösteremeyen öğrenciler
İngilizce Hazırlık Programı’na devam ederler.
İngilizce Yeterlik ve Seviye Tespit I. Aşama Sınavı sonucunda Temel (Elementary) düzeye
yerleştirilmiş olan öğrencilerin, 5 Eylül 2016 tarihinde yapılacak ek bir sınava girmeleri gerekebilir.
Bu sınava girmesi istenilen öğrencilerin sınava girmesi zorunludur. Sınava girmeyenlere İngilizce
Hazırlık Programında sınıf verilmeyecektir.
Bu sınavda, öğrencilerden verilen bir resim için kısa bir cevap yazmaları istenecektir. Bu sınava
girecek öğrenciler 3 Eylül 2016 günü I. Aşama sınav sonuçları açıklandıktan sonra
bilgilendirileceklerdir.
İngilizce Hazırlık Programı'na devam edecek öğrencilerin düzey bilgilerinin ilan tarihi ve derse
başlama tarihi aşağıda bulunmaktadır.

The English Proficiency and Placement Exam (COPE) given by the School of English Language
(BUSEL) is administered in two stages. This guide provides detailed information about the First

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR STUDENTS TAKING THE STAGE I EXAM
 Students are required to sit both stages of the English Proficiency and Placement Exam.
Those who do not take the exams will not be assigned to classes in the English Language
Preparatory Program.
 The English Proficiency and Placement Exam (COPE) Stage I is a multiple choice exam
consisting of 200 questions of different levels of difficulty. The questions are designed to
test a student’s knowledge of grammar and vocabulary.
 Each question has five alternatives to choose from. Four wrong answers cancel out one
correct answer.
 Students code their answers onto the optic form provided. Answers written on the
question booklet are not acceptable.
 Students are expected to be in the exam classroom at 09.30 a.m. at the latest.
 Students who arrive later than 10.30 a.m. will not be allowed to take the exam.
 Students should bring with them the following documents:
o Exam entrance slip (for 2016 entry students only);
o Bilkent University Student IDs issued during registration;
o An official ID card (the National ID Card, Driver’s License, or Passport).
 Students are NOT allowed to enter the exam building with cell phones, electronic
devices, watches, or personal belongings like purses. Students are advised not to bring
any of these articles with them.
 A pencil, eraser and sharpener will be provided by the university. Therefore, students do
not need to bring their own stationery.
 Students who pass the English Proficiency and Placement Exam (COPE) Stage I are
eligible to sit Stage II. Stage I results will be announced on the internet at 18:00 on the
day of the exam.

The English Proficiency and Placement Exam Stage II has four written papers and a
speaking exam. The written exam and the speaking exam are administered on different
days. Detailed information about the exam is given below.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR STUDENTS TAKING THE STAGE II EXAM
 Students are required to sit both stages of the English Proficiency and Placement Exam.
 The Stage II (COPE) Written Exam consists of four papers (writing, reading, listening, and
language). The exam is designed for students with a certain level of knowledge and skills
in English.
 The listening and reading papers contain multiple-choice questions. Each multiple choice
question has five options. Four wrong answers cancel out one correct answer.
 Students code their answers onto the optic form provided. Answers written on the
question booklets are not acceptable, with the exception of the writing paper.
 Students are expected to be in the exam room at 09.00 at the latest.
 Students who arrive later than 09.45 will not be allowed to take the exam.
 Students should bring the following documents with them:
o An official ID card (the National ID Card, Driver’s License, or Passport)
 Students are NOT allowed to enter the exam building with cell phones, electronic

will be provided by the university.
 Students who pass Stage II should contact their department secretaries to register for
courses.

INFORMATION ABOUT THE ENGLISH PROFICIENCY AND PLACEMENT EXAM (COPE) STAGE II
The English Proficiency and Placement Exam Stage II has five parts: Listening, Reading, Writing,
Language, and Speaking.
The Stage II Written Exam has both multiple choice and open ended questions, as explained below.
Reading Exam (1 hour and 20 minutes):
The reading exam has three parts made up of a number of reading texts, and includes multiplechoice questions. The reading texts vary in length. The aims of the reading exam are to assess the
students’ ability to comprehend main ideas, read for detail and specific information, understand
reference markers, guess the meaning of vocabulary from context, and make inferences.
Writing Exam - Task 1 (30 minutes):
This writing task involves responding to one of the texts from the Reading Paper and writing a
paragraph of approximately 150 words.
Listening Exam (1 hour):
The listening exam has two tasks, both of which are based on lectures. The aims of the exam are to
assess the students' ability to understand main ideas, supporting information, and specific details,
and make inferences. Students take notes while listening and then are given 25 minutes to answer
multiple-choice questions after both lectures have finished.
Each listening task is listened to once only. There is a 30 second pause at the end of the first lecture
for students to look over the notes they have taken.
Language Exam (40 minutes):
The language exam is composed of three parts. Students are required to fill in blanks in the reading
texts in each part with appropriate responses.
Writing Exam - Task 2 (1 hour):
In the second part of the writing exam, students are given two topics and asked to choose one and
write a 350-word composition on the topic they have chosen.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR THE STAGE II SPEAKING EXAM



Students who pass Stage I of the English Proficiency and Placement Exam are eligible
to take the speaking exam.
Students should bring the following documents with them:
o An official ID card (the National ID Card, Driver’s License, or Passport).
Only those students who have their Bilkent University ID Card can enter the speaking
exam.
o
Students who do not have a Bilkent University ID card are required to obtain a ‘Student
Identification Document with Photograph’ from the Registrar’s Office before the exam
date in order to be eligible to take the speaking exam.
o
Students who do not have their Bilkent University Student ID card, or a ‘Student
Identification Document with Photograph’ ‘ issued by the Registrar’s Office will not be
permitted to take the speaking exam.

Students who do not take the speaking exam will receive a ‘ZERO’ for the speaking part of
the English Proficiency and Placement Exam (COPE) Stage II.

Students are required to be present in front of the speaking exam room 5 minutes before
their exam time.

2016-2017 ACADEMIC YEAR PERIOD 1 INFORMATION
Students are required to sit both stages of the English Proficiency and Placement Exam.
Students who are not successful in the English Proficiency and Placement Exam (COPE)
Stage I and Stage II will be enrolled in the English Language Preparatory Program.
Students placed at Elementary level in the English Proficiency and Placement Exam
(COPE) Stage I may be required to take an additional written exam on 5 September 2016.
Students who are asked to sit this exam are required to take the exam. If they don't, they
will not be assigned to a class in the English Language Preparatory Program.
This exam will consist of a short written response to a visual prompt. Those students who
are required to sit this exam will be informed when the Stage 1 exam results are
announced on 3 September 2016.
Below are the scheduled announcement dates for the levels and courses of those
students enrolled in the English Language Preparatory Program, as well as the start date
of classes.
