dokunup yeşile boyanmış, sanki yeryüzündeki her güzellikten bir parça
ödünç alıp benliğine katmış. Datça’yı bu denli eşsiz kılan bu mudur acaba…

A Blue Freshness
Datça brings mountains and sea, Aegean and the Mediterrenean
together, touches blue and is dyed green, borrows a piece from
every beauty in the world and makes them its own. I can’t help
but wonder if that’s what that makes Datça so unique…

trabon, “Tanrı yarattığı kulunun uzun ömürlü olmasını isterse, onu Datça Yarımadası’na bırakır” demiş
yıllar önce. Acaba bu sözünün bir gün kulaktan kulağa yayılıp Datça’nın her bir yanında ünleneceğini
bilse, “Ah keşke biraz daha afilli bir laf etseydim!”
diye yakınır mıydı? Yoksa “ne eksik ne de fazla bir
laf etmişim, Datça’ya tam da yakışanı dillendirmişim” diye mi
düşünürdü? Bana kalırsa, ikincisinin ihtimali bir hayli yüksek;
öyle ya, bu söz Datça’ya tam uymuş, özenle dikilmiş bir kıyafet
gibi tam üstüne oturmuş. Datçalılar öyle benimsemişler ki bu
lafı, neredeyse yarımadanın resmi sloganı yapmışlar.
Datça’ya, sıcak ve boğucu bir havada, bir ağustos günü varıyorum. Bir süredir Ege kıyılarını geziyorum ve oldukça yükseklerde
seyreden hava sıcaklıkları, dinlenmeye diye çıktığım yolculuğu
tam tersine yorucu kılıyor. Datça’ya vardığımdaysa, denizden
hafif bir rüzgâr esiyor, havanın yakıcılığını bir an olsun duyumsamıyorum. Sadece o ana özgü olduğunu düşündüğüm tatlı
serinleme hissinin, aslında Datça’da olağan bir durum olduğunu anlıyorum bir süre sonra. Demek ki burası “yanmayan” tatil
beldelerinden; nemin fazla olmadığı, tertemiz rüzgârların yıl
boyunca estiği, mis gibi havayı ciğerlerinize çekip tatil kelimesinin anlamını tekrar sorgulayacağınız, yeryüzünde bir eşi daha
olmayan yerlerden.
Bu son derece “kendine has” beldeye, daha ilk görüşte vurulu-

to Datça to live longer”. Had he
known his saying would spread
from mouth to mouth all around
Datça and be very famous, would
he wish he had said a something loftier? Or
would he think that he expressed just what
suits Datça, no more, no less? In my opinion, the
chances of the latter are quite high; this saying
fits Datça perfectly, like a custom made dress.
The people of Datça adopted this saying and
made it almost the legal motto of the place.
I arrive at Datça on a hot and stuffy day of August. I have been wandering around the Aegean
shores for a while, and the rather hot weather
makes the trip I took to relax anything but tiring.
When I arrive at Datça, a light breeze is blowing
from the sea, not once I feel the burning effect
of the weather. After a while I realize that this
sensation of sweet freshness is not special to
that moment, actually it is usual in Datça. So it
means this is one of those “not burning” resorts
where humidity is low and fresh breezes blow

yorum. Sevimli restoranlar, büfeler ve dükkânların dizili olduğu
sahil yolunu, her nefes alışımda Datça’da olduğumun bir kez
daha farkına vararak hiç acele etmeden turluyorum. Bir yanımda uzanan, uslu bir çocuk misali hiç kıpırdamayan uçsuz bucaksız deniz, bir süre sonra arkadaşını da koluna takarak devam
ediyor yoluna. Diğer yanımda duran minik bir göle bağlanıyor
suları usulca. Hemen yanındaki kafe, hem gölü hem de denizi,
bu kol kola girmiş iki sırdaşı seyre dalarak kahvaltı etmek için
gelenlerle dolup taşmış.
Datça’nın merkezinde bir aşağı bir yukarı dolanırken, amfiteatrın yakınında koca bir aslan heykeli çıkıyor karşıma. Meğerse bu
heykel, Knidosluların kazandıkları bir zaferin anısına yaptırdığı, 1855 yılında İngiltere’ye götürülen Knidos Aslanı’nın bir kopyasıymış. Aslı ise British Museum’un girişinde sergileniyormuş!

throughout the year, where you will inhale the fresh air and question the meaning of “holiday” one more time; it is a unique place
in the world indeed.
I fall for this very characteristic place at first sight. I walk around
the pretty restaurants, kiosks and the coastal road lined by shops
and with every breath I realize I am in Datça. On one side, the endless, still sea lying next to me like a well-behaved child meets
his friend after a while on his journey. Its waters join with a little
lake on the other side. The café right next to this sight is full with
people who came to have breakfast watching these friends hand
in hand.
While going up and down in the city center, a colossal statue of
a lion confronts me near the amphitheater. To my surprise, this
statue is made by the people of Cnidus as a memorial of a victory,
and the original was taken to England in 1855. It is exhibited in
the entrance of the British Museum! Apparently Datça had to be
content with a marble copy of the priceless statue of the Cnidus
Lion, which actually belongs to this land.

CAN YÜCEL’İN DATÇA’SI
Adı üstünde Datça’nın eski yerleşimlerinden olan Eski Datça’da,
begonvil, sardunya ve melisalarla süslü dar sokaklarda yürüyerek yıllar öncesine ait taş evleri seyre dalıyorum. İlk durağım,
adı Datça’yla bütünleşmiş aykırı şair Can Yücel’in çok sevdiği
bir mekân olan köyün kahvesi. Kahvenin bir köşesinde yarım bıraktığı şarabın şişesi, fotoğrafları, şiirleri sergileniyor. Mekânın
sahibi ve aynı zamanda muhitin eski muhtarı sıkı dostuymuş
Can Yücel’in. Kapının hemen yanında oturuyor, onunla yaptığı
tatlı muhabbetleri yâd ediyor sessizce belki de.
Bu kahve aynı zamanda Datça’nın endemik otlarıyla yapılan
meşhur çaylarını tatmak için harika bir yer. Çiçekleri, minik kozalakları andıran karabaş otu, mis kokulu adaçayı ve mercanköşkü kahvede servis edilen çaylar arasında. Bunların dışında
Datça’da biberiye, pelin, üzerlik otu, dağ nanesi, kantaron, sumak, yarpuz ve değişik naneler yetiştiriliyor ve çoğunun da çayı
yapılıyor.
Eski Datça’da “Datça Sanat” adlı mütevazı bir atölye kesiyor yolumu. Öncesinde bankacı olan, şehir hayatını terk ederek Datça’ya
yerleşmiş Müberra ve Yaşar Aydoğan, eskiden köyün fırını olan
bu minik atölyede, vitray ve sedef işçiliğinin en nadide örneklerini üretiyorlar. Bölgede ipekböceği yetiştiriciliğini ve ipek dokumacılığını da artırmayı hedefleyen çift, altı yıldan beri bu alanda projeler yürütüyor. Atölyeleri, ipek dokumacılığının en şık örneklerine ev sahipliği yapıyor; rüzgârda belli belirsiz dalgalanan
bembeyaz kıyafetler insanı tatlı hülyalara sürüklüyor.
KIZLAN’DAKİ YEL DEĞİRMENLERİ
Datça’nın rüzgârından bahsettik, yel değirmenleri de bunun doğal bir sonucu olarak göze çarpıyor elbette. Kızlan Köyü’nde bulunan değirmenlerden restorana dönüştürülmüş bir tanesi haricindekilerin hepsi yarı yıkık durumda. Yıllardır boş kalmalarını

I gaze at the old stone houses while walking in the narrow streets
ornamented by bougainvillea (known as paper flower), geraniums
and lemon balms, in Old Datça, one of the old settlements in Datça
as indicated by the name. My first stop is the coffeehouse which
Can Yücel, the contradistinctive poet associated with Datça,
loved dearly. In one of the corners of the coffeehouse his half
empty wine bottle, his photographs and poems are exhibited. The
owner of the place and the former headman of the village was a
close friend of Can Yücel. He sits next to the door, maybe he silently remembers the sweet talks they had before.
This coffeehouse is also a great place to try the famous teas
brewed with the endemic plants grown in Datça. Lavandula stoechas (known as topped lavender) which reminds of flowers and
pine cones, fragrant sage and marjoram are some of the tea
served in the coffeehouse. Apart from those, rosemary, sweet
wormwood, harmal, mountain mint, gentian, pennyroyal and different mints are grown in Datça and brewed as different teas.
In Old Datça, a modest atelier called “Datça Art” catches my attention. Müberra and Yaşar Aydoğan, former bankers who left the city
life and settled in Datça, produce the rare examples of stained

EGE VE AKDENİZ’İN ÖPÜŞTÜĞÜ YER: KNİDOS
Datça Yarımadası’nın tam ucunda, Ege ve Akdeniz’in öpüştüğü
noktada bulunan antik şehir Knidos da muhakkak görülmesi gereken yerlerden biri. Tarihi MÖ 700’lü yıllara dayanan, antik çağın önemli bilim ve sanat merkezlerinden olan Knidos, seneler
boyu özensiz kazı çalışmalarına maruz kalmış. Birçok eser ait
olduğu topraktan koparılıp başka ülkelere taşınmış ancak buna
rağmen Knidos hem konumu hem de barındırdığı eserleri sayesinde cazibesini yitirmemiş. Helenistik döneme ait güneş saati, taşları ve basamakları oldukça iyi durumdaki bir şehir yolu,
şehrin stoası ve limana bakan küçük tiyatro günümüze dek iyi
korunmuş eserlerden. Alana hâkim muhteşem bir konuma kurulmuş Afrodit Tapınağı’nı da atlamamak gerek. Her ne kadar
tapınağın tam ortasında bulunan Afrodit heykeli şu ana dek bulunamamış olsa da güzelliği ağızdan ağıza aktarılıyor ve herkesi kendi hayalindeki Afrodit’i yaratmaya teşvik ediyor.

be the bake house of the village. The couple who aim to improve
silkworm breeding and weaving has carried out project in this
area for six years. Their atelier hosts the most elegant pieces of
silk weaving, the snow-white dresses softly waving in the breeze
sweep one away into a dream world.
WINDMILLS IN KIZLAN
We talked about the wind in Datça, of course windmills stand out
as a natural result of this. Apart from the one which turned into a
restaurant, all of the windmills in Kızlan Village are half-broken. You
can still visit the windmills even though they are swarmed with
many plants as they have been empty for years, and witness that
they were placed on the point where the wind blows strongest.
CNIDUS: WHERE THE AEGEAN AND THE MEDITERRENEAN KISS
The ancient city of Cnidus, located on the edge of Datça peninsula where the Aegean Sea and the Mediterranean Sea kiss, is a
place one must see. One of the most important art and science

dergone many careless excavations throughout the years. A great
number of artifacts were taken from the earth of this city to the
other countries; however Cnidus didn’t lose its charm thanks to
its location and the remaining monuments it hosts. Some of the
well-protected monuments include a sundial from the Hellenistic
period, the main street which is still in a good condition with its
stones and stairs, the stoa of the city and the little theatre facing the harbor. The Temple of Aphrodite located on a great place
dominating the area is also very important. Even though the Aphrodite statue isn’t found yet, the beauty of it is spread from mouth
to mouth and everyone creates an Aphrodite in their mind.
MASMAVİ KOYLAR
Datça, koyların bolluğu bakımından son derece şanslı tatil beldelerinden. Plajların çoğu mavi bayraklı. Datça’nın güzellikte birbiriyle yarışan koylarının tek kusuru, plajların irili ufaklı çakıllardan
oluşması, tabii buna da kusur denirse... Ben yarımadanın en çok
uğranılan yerlerinden biri olan Palamutbükü’nü koyuyorum gezi
planıma. Burayı özel yapan, çevrede göz zevkini bozacak nitelikte devasa binaların, otellerin bulunmaması. Sahil yolunda, şirin
pansiyonlar, balık restoranları ve Datça’ya özgü ürünlerin satıldığı dükkânlar sıralanmış. Hemen yanındaki plaj ise denize girmek
isteyenlerin gönlünü çalıyor çaktırmadan.
Datça, dağla denizi, Akdeniz’le Ege’yi birbirine kavuşturmuş;
maviye dokunup yeşile boyanmış, sanki yeryüzündeki her güzellikten bir parça ödünç alıp benliğine katmış. Bu mudur bilmem ki, Datça’yı bu denli eşsiz kılan. Bildiğim tek bir şey var,
o da Ege’ye bir gezi planınız varsa şayet, mutlaka Datça’yı dahil etmeniz gerektiği. Hele bir ayak basın, görün bakın nasıl en
alımlı haliyle karşılayacak sizi.
DEEP BLUE BAYS
Datça is a lucky resort with its many bays. Most of the beaches
qualify for the Blue Flag. The only imperfection of the beautiful bays of Datça is that the beaches consist of many small and
large pebbles - if you can call this an “imperfection”. I include
Palamutbükü, an often-visited place in the peninsula, on my itinerary. What makes this place special is that there are no huge
buildings or hotels around being an eyesore. On the coat road,
there are cute guesthouses, fish restaurants and shops that sell
products peculiar to Datça. The beach next to it secretly steals
the hearts of the ones who want to swim.
Datça brings mountains and sea, Aegean and the Mediterrenean
together, touches blue and is dyed green, borrows a piece from
every beauty in the world and makes them its own. I don’t know
whether it is that what makes Datça so unique. I know one thing
for sure though; if you have a plan to visit the Aegean region, you
should include Datça in your itinerary. Once you’ve set foot on it,
you will see that it will welcome you with its alluring state.
