Who invented God? When, why, and where? Thomas Römer seeks to answer
these questions about the deity of the great monotheisms-Yhwh, God, or
Allah-by tracing Israelite beliefs and their context from the Bronze Age
to the end of the Old Testament period in the third century BCE. That we
can address such enigmatic questions at all may come as a surprise. But
as Römer makes clear, a wealth of evidence allows us to piece together
a reliable account of the origins and evolution of the god of Israel. Römer
draws on a long tradition of historical, philological, and exegetical work and
on recent discoveries in archaeology and epigraphy to locate the origins of
Yhwh in the early Iron Age, when he emerged somewhere in Edom or in the
northwest of the Arabian peninsula as a god of the wilderness and of storms
and war. He became the sole god of Israel and Jerusalem in fits and starts as
other gods, including the mother goddess Asherah, were gradually sidelined.
But it was not until a major catastrophe-the destruction of Jerusalem and
Judah-that Israelites came to worship Yhwh as the one god of all, creator of
heaven and earth, who nevertheless proclaimed a special relationship with

Al sinds de oprichting in 1880 staat de Vrije Universiteit middenin de
samenleving. Dat is mede een gevolg van de bijzondere wijze van
ontstaan: dankzij particulier initiatief en bekostigd met startkapitaal
van een meedenkende ondernemer. De afhankelijkheid van donaties is
een constante in de eerste driekwart eeuw van de VU, gesymboliseerd
door het beroemde groene collectebusje met daarop de beeltenis van
Abraham Kuyper. De meelevende achterban herinnerde de universiteit
graag aan haar maatschappelijke taken. Dit zorgde voor een open blik
naar de samenleving, maar leidde zo nu en dan ook tot fricties tussen de

beginperiode altijd voelbaar gebleven. Het christelijk erfgoed is vandaag
vertaald in een keuze voor 'verantwoordelijkheid' als een van de kernwaarden

Parade is as much a project about parades as it is a project about the
Netherlands. With over five hundred parades each year in such a small
country, one can't neglect the role they play within large parts of society.
The parades I photographed consisted mainly of decorated vehicles or
'floats': the building of such a float takes months and stands in no comparison
to the sparse hours that they roll through the streets. In this growing
individualistic society it brings and binds people together, showing the
universal need of people to unite. The floats are of great beauty (I'd like
to refer to them as temporary artworks), however the real beauty can be
found in the perseverance with which they are made. The Dutch, known
as sober-minded, as reflected in the neat and well-organized environment,
make a strange contrast to all those surreal objects. Positioned within this
environment the floats seem like a silent protest against conformity, and
at the same time, they are a product of exactly this sober-mindedness
and careful planning skills that helped the Netherlands to become as it is

uitgeroepen. Willem I was de eerste en enige koning van Groot-Nederland,
Bolívar de eerste en enige president van Groot-Colombia. In 1830 bezweken
zowel het koninkrijk als de republiek aan hun interne twisten en daarmee
kwam ook een eind aan de onderlinge betrekkingen en aan Willems kans om
zijn koninkrijk als een grote mogendheid op de kaart te zetten. Sytze van der

Al bijna vijf eeuwen is Harlingen niet alleen de grootste havenstad, maar
was het gedurende lange tijd ook de poort van Friesland. Eeuwenlang lag
