Brussels Jazz Marathon
Since starting in 1998, the annual Brussels Jazz
Marathon has been attracting people from all over Europe
and as far away as Japan, in increasing numbers, year by
year. Three days of jazz madness with jazz flavours to
suit every taste: traditional jazz, modern jazz, rock, blues
and funk. Over 450 musicians perform in outdoor and
indoor venues around the city and all concerts are free.
There are four outdoor stages – Grand Place, the Sablon,
Place St. Catherine, Place FernandCocq – and more than
50 indoor stages in clubs and cafes. Free admission is
available on a ‘first come first served’ basis.
A special bus service is put on over the weekend. It provides a convenient, friendly service
helping everyone get from one venue to the next and is the easiest way to move around the
city and enjoy what’s on offer. The buses run from 20:00 pm to 03:00 am to cover the main
Marathon event areas.
As well as concerts and performances, there is a huge dance event, ‘Swinging Brussels’,
on Friday night. This event first took place in 2009 and has become very popular. It
happens at La Tentation and is the place to be for dance lovers.
There’s something for the kids, too. A mini marathon that takes place on Saturday, all day,
in Place du Sablon. On the programme there are stage concerts, music initiation
workshops, jazzy make-up and a fun Milk Bar where all kids can enjoy milk and ice cream
for free.
The event takes place over the last weekend in May each year and the city’s hotels fill up
quickly. Independent travellers can book accommodation online from £34 per night. It’s
wise to book early, to be sure of a room. Some travel companies offer all inclusive
packages to Brussels for the weekend with prices starting at around £215 per person.
Getting to Brussels from England is easy. Visitors can fly from London Heathrow with
British Airways or from Bristol, Birmingham, Manchester or Newcastle with Brussels
airlines. Alternatively there’s Eurostar departing from St Pancras railway station in London
or Ebbsfleet International railway station in Dartford, Kent.
If you love jazz, you’ll love Brussels in May.

Facebook – The Review Movie
Fourteen-year-old Abigail Lopez reviews The Social
Network, a film about Facebook and its creator.
Going to the cinema to see The Social Network, I found
myself wondering if I was going to look at Facebook differently afterwards. I doubted anything in
the film could make me stop using Facebook – because, as a character in the film says ‘it’s
extremely addictive’ – but I did wonder if it would make me nervous about using it. It turned out,
though, that The Social Network isn’t really about Facebook, because it’s a character film. It is more
about the development of Facebook from its roots as ‘Thefacebook’.
The film asks the audience to consider whether Mark Zuckerberg, the creator, stole the idea for
Facebook or not. Facebook was launched in February 2004. At that time, Zuckerberg had been
recruited to work on another site, based on a similar idea to Facebook. Shortly after the launch of
Facebook, two lawsuits were filed, one by Zuckerberg’s best friend Eduardo Saverin. Most of the
film deals with discussions between the parties involved in the lawsuits. The back-story is then
explained through flashbacks. The film really draws strength and becomes a great piece of cinema,
in its superb characters and unique dialogue.
The screenwriter keeps everything moving along really well with witty dialogue and a few laughs.
The film starts out fast-paced and then races along from there, with the director’s style helping
superbly. The actors fit their parts wonderfully, too. The best actor in the film was Andrew Garfield,
who plays Saverin. I hope to see him in many more films soon. So, if you are looking to learn a few
things about Facebook, The Social Network is a good option. It isn’t perfect, but it’s fun, and seeing
a film that is based around something that most of us use every day is also quite interesting.
