“Ageing
in
the
Mediterranean” is a
compilation of scholarly writing and
research in the field of ageing policy in
the Mediterranean Region.
Among
distinguished scholars such as Dr. Ester
Ieocovich of Israel and Dr. Giovanni
Lamura of Italy to name just a few, we
are pleased that our own, Associate
Professor Dr. Özgür Arun, contributed
the chapter representing Turkey called:
“Ageing in Turkey: the Peter Pan
syndrome?”.
Dr. Arun insightfully uses author J.M.
Barrie’s legendary character Peter Pan
and his Neverland to challenge the myth
under which much of Turkey’s
population appears to live, assuming
that like the inhabitants of Neverland
it’s population will not age and
somehow like Peter Pan, all will remain
young.
In this chapter, Dr. Arun
addresses the following three research
questions, namely: “what is the course
of ageing in its barest form and basic
meaning in Turkey? What are the
conditions of older adults based on
sociological factors such as daily life,
gender, marital status, education, work
and income, health, and religion and
ethnicity? What is the perspective of the
state in Turkey towards ageing in the
realm of social policy? (p. 297)”. For

yayınlanan “Ageing in the Mediterranean”
başlıklı kitap Akdeniz Bölgesi’nde yaşlılık
politikaları alanında çalışmalarda bulunan
seçkin akademisyenlerin yazılarından bir
derlemedir.

yanında, bölümümüz Öğretim Üyesi Doç.
Dr. Özgür Arun’un “Ageing in Turkey:
The Peter Pan Syndrome?” başlıklı
çalışmasıyla Türkiye’yi temsil etmesinden
mutluluk duymaktayız.
Dr. Arun; çalışmasında J. M. Barrie’nin
hiç yaşlanmayacak efsanevi karakteri
Peter Pan’a atfen; Türkiye’nin genç ve
dinamik bir nüfusu olduğunu düşünerek,
bunun değişmeden hep böyle kalacağına
inananları Peter Pan Sendromu’ndan
muzdarip olarak değerlendirmektedir. Zira
ne Türkiye Neverland’dir, ne yurttaşları
Peter Pan. Tüm çocuklar yaşlanır.
Türkiye’nin çocukları da her geçen gün
hızla yaşlanmaktadır.
Bu bölümde Dr. Arun şu üç önemli
araştırma sorusuna işaret etmektedir: “En
yalın ve temel haliyle Türkiye’de
yaşlılığın seyri nedir? Toplumsal cinsiyet,
eğitim, iş ve gelir, sağlık, din ve etnisite
gibi sosyolojik göstergeler temelinde
yaşlıların içinde bulundukları koşullar
nelerdir? Türkiye’de devletin sosyal
politika açısından yaşlanmaya bakış açısı
nedir? (p. 297)
