T.C. T.C. Ç AN AKKALE VALİLİĞİ ÇANAKKALE VALİLİĞİ Guide To Excavations in ÇANAKKALE Kazı Rehberi Assos 1 Assos Kazı Broşürü ing-Trk..indd 1 7/12/14 5:50 PM Athena Tapınağı Kazı Tarihçesi Excavation History 1879 yılında Joseph T. Clarke (1856-1920) ve Francis H. Bacon (1856-1940) adlı Amerikalı iki genç mimar, Dor mimarisi üzerine yaptıkları araştırmalar nedeniyle Assos’u ziyaret etmişlerdir. Two young American architects, called Joseph T. Clarke (1856-1920) and Francis H. Bacon (18561940) visited Assos in 1879 for the research they carried on Dor Architecture. The first excavations in Assos started on 19th of April, 1881 and continued until 1883. German archaeologist Robert Koldewey joined the team in the second year of the excavations. The workers who served in the excavations were brought from Lesbos Island, Ayvalık and Pergamum. In respect of the laws of the time, one third of the finds were taken by the people conducting the excavations to Boston Museum of Fine Arts and the remaining two third were taken to Istanbul Museum of Archaeology. 2 Assos Kazı Broşürü ing-Trk..indd 2-3 After an interval of 100 years, the excavations were continued under Umit Serdaroğlu in 1981. During these new excavations, the Temple of Athena was excavated again and some of the columns were placed and erected into their original places. As the theatre was excavated completely, the absent sitting areas were restored. The excavations under Umit Serdaroğlu continued until he died on 23rd of September, 2005. Assos excavations have been conducted under the direction of Prof. Dr. Nurettin Arslan of Çanakkale 18 Mart University since 2006. They have especially concentrated on topographical mapping of the site, exploration of the agora and the restoration of the Temple of Athena and the Ancient Theatre. The Temple of Athena The Temple of Athena which is located in the east of Acropolis has a special place among the Archaic Period temples in Anatolia. The temple which was built between 540 BC and 530 BC was dedicated to goddess Athena according to the scripture on a column cap. The granolithic floor in the Cella reveals that the temple was actively used until Hellenistic Era. The temple, which has the dimensions of 14.30 x 30.31 m, has 13 columns on the long sides and 6 columns on the short sides. Except for the roof, the whole temple is made from andesite. The friezes and metopes which are decorated with mythological notions and struggles of animals are exhibited in the museums of Çanakkale, Istanbul, Louvre and Boston. Only the authorized temple attendants were allowed to enter the sacred room (Cella) which was regarded as the home of the goddess. The sculptures which belonged to the temple and the gifts which were offered to the goddess were stored in Cella. Acropolis of the Byzantium Era Acropolis was used as a shelter in the late Byzantium Era. For that reason, Acropolis was converted into a castle by surrounding it with walls which had round and square towers. Cistems, silos and residential areas were located in the castle. Stones from the Temple of Athena were used in the construction of these structures. It is the most significant public place where people of Archaic Age came together and carried out political and commercial activities. The agora of Assos is in the middle of the residential areas located in the east and west of the city and it is in the west of the theatre. The routes extending from the east side and the west side of the city and the routes extending from the harbour direction intersect in the agora. The council building of the city (Bouleuterion) is located on the south corner of the agora. Also, stoas extend along the north and south sides. A bath structure of Roman Period is placed in front of the southern stoa. The Stoa The Stoa, which protects people from sun and rain, is a gathering point for merchants, wealthy men and philosophers. The main rock (conglomera) in the north of the agora was cut for the construction of the stoa. The two-floored stoa facing the south has a length of 111.52 m and its width is 12.42 m. The columns inside and in front of the stoa were built in Dor order. The stoa in the east of the agora had more storeys because of elevation difference and the upper grade of the stoa opened directly into the agora. Northern Stoa of Assos is believed to have been built in the middle of the 2nd century AD. Bouleuterion The structure which was used as the gathering area of the city council has a square planning. The roof is supported by four inside columns. The entrance is in the direction of the agora and the other sides of the structure are enclosed. The interim of the westward columns are closed with rails. The fluteless columns in Bouleuterion are built in Dor order. According to an inscription, the council building was constructed in the 4th century BC. 5 7/12/14 5:50 PM Nekropolis Tiyatro The Theatre Agoranın güneyindeki tiyatro andezitten inşa edilmiştir. The theatre on the south of the agora was built from andesite. The structure reveals the characteristics of Greek order with its horseshoe shape. A two-storey theatre building was constructed in front of the orchestra in the Roman Period. The structure leans toward a slope and faces the landscape. This is another property complying with the planning of Greek theatre planning. The sitting steps of the theatre (cavea) are separated with steps and open spaces to walk through (diazoma). There is a water-channel encircling the orchestrate of the theatre. In Roman Period the first line of steps were removed and this situation is associated with the gladiator games. Four scriptures were found on the sitting steps. Three of them belong to occupational groups, such as, forgers, leather men and stone dressers. The fourth one is related to the cult of Serapis and members of the cult. The scriptures reveal that those occupational groups made reservations for the theatre. The theatre was built in the 4th and 3rd centuries BC and continued to serve with some extensions and alterations during the Roman Period. The theatre was first excavated between 1881 and 1883 by an American excavation team but it was fully recovered and later restored by the Turkish excavation team in 1980s. 6 Assos Kazı Broşürü ing-Trk..indd 6-7 Assos kentinin mezarlık alanları kentin doğusundan batısına kadar uzanmaktadır. Necropolis The funerary sites of Assos extend from the east of the city to the west. However, excavations and explorations were conducted only in the funerary site which is located in front of the Western Gate. The earliest tombs in Necropolis are urns and large jars (pithos). The dead were placed in those preservation vases in foetal position (hoker). Cist tombs begin to appear in the 6th century BC and sarcophagus tombs are first traced in the 5th century BC. Sarcophagus tombs were incessantly used until the Byzantium Period. The tombs were plain with flat covers and they did not have any decorations or inscriptions until The Roman Period. There are also numerous mausoleums in the Assos funerary site from the Roman Period. The best preserved of these tombs is the tomb of Publius Varius which was built in the late 1st century BC. As a general rule siblings were never cremated. Especially in the Archaic Age, women were cremated and their ashes were collected in small jars; on the other hand, men were buried in large jars (pithos) without being cremated. As a reflection of the Archaic Age belief, various gifts, such as, coins, playthings, figurines, fruit, pottery, metal tools, etc were put into the tombs. The structure consists of a square shaped atrium and a canopy which encircles the atrium. The gymnasions, in which young people got training in sports, music, literature and physical sciences, were located outside the cities and in the forest lands until the 4th century BC. Later, they were built inside the cities. According to a scripture, Assos Gymnasion was built in the 2nd BC. In the Byzantium Period, the southern section of Gymnasion was converted to a church and covered with mosaic. 8 Assos Kazı Broşürü ing-Trk..indd 8 7/12/14 5:50 PM
