Bebek is undeniably the chicest neighbourhood in Istanbul. In simplest terms,
Bebek blends a European f lair with a touch of old Turkey, making it a favourite spot

hampagne soirees held in Prohibition times, silent
films transforming into talkies and legendary New York
mobsters fixing baseball games to buy their gals the finest
furs and jewels money could buy. No decade will ever match
the thrill and decadence of the 1920s. Its appeal is evident
more than ever today in the fashion world with many of this
season’s collections paying homage to the styles of the era.
We tell you how to add that vintage f lair to your closet with
our pick of the brands that are bringing back the Roaring
Twenties and other iconic decades for summer.

Twenties trend
The f lapper girl look of the 1920s has made a strong
comeback with its signature traits: hair styled in short
bobs, shimmering headbands, straight–cut sleeveless
dresses with short hemlines, dropped waistlines
and glamorous embellishments. The f lapper reigns
proudly at Gucci as the brand goes back to its 1921
origins this season. Creative Director Frida Giannini’s
stunning black and gold Art Deco frocks are crafted to
resemble the structures of New York skyscrapers like
the Chrysler building. Also dancing the Charleston
this season are Roberto Cavalli’s f lapper girls clad in
gold pleated tunics, glitzy evening jackets and dropwaisted skirts. For a more elegant affair, Cavalli’s sheer
f loor-length gowns embellished with black sequins
make for a stunning effect. Etro’s geometric-printed
collection salutes ‘all that jazz’ pairing knee-length
dresses with revealing slip trims and strings of pearls.
It is impossible to speak about the 1920s without
mentioning Coco Chanel, the quintessential
Parisienne who gave women a masculine-inspired
wardrobe all their own. This season, Chanel Creative
Director Karl Lagerfeld brings back the trademark
tweeds, mille-feuille pleats, feathers and cardigans in
romantic spring mint, rose and peach pastels. Sarah
Burton continues to shine at Alexander McQueen
with her imaginative collection imbued with an
‘under the sea’ theme. Translucent shell-like colours
and oyster printed silk chiffons pair with empirewaisted dresses and two-piece skirt suits that have
a jellyfish-like movement to them. The collection
is also highlighted by a striking use of feathers and
jewelled lace caps, reminiscent of lavish cabaret
performance outfits. For the travelling woman,
Hermès does bourgeois impeccably with colourblocked looks in white and f lame orange paired with
elegant headscarves – a look that belongs on an ocean
liner bound for the Americas.

Şüphesiz 1920’leri konuşurken, erkeklerden
esinlenerek kadınlara yepyeni bir gardrop
kazandıran müstesna Parizyen Coco Chanel’den
bahsetmemek olmaz. Bu sezon Chanel kreatif
direktörü Karl Lagerfeld, markanın alametifarikası
tüvitleri, milföy plileri, tüy ve hırkaları romantik
nane, gül ve şeftali tonlarında geri getiriyor. Sarah
Burton, hayalgücünü zorlayan ‘Denizler Altında’
temalı koleksiyonu ile Alexander McQueen’de
ışıldamaya devam ediyor. Yarı transparan sedef li
renkler ve istiridye baskılı ipek şifonlar, dekolte
elbiseler ve döpiyeslerle hoş kombinler yaratıyor.
Koleksiyondaki tüy ve taşlı dantel şapkalar, şatafatlı
kabare kostümlerini anımsatıyor. Seyahat eden
kadınlar için Hermès’in reçetesi; beyaz ve alev
turuncusundan oluşan düz renk kombinleri ve
tamamlayıcı zarif eşarplar. Amerika kıtasına doğru

bir sahneyi hatırlatmıyor mu?
Fifties & Sixties
The 1920s were not the sole source of
inspiration for brands this season. Prada
embraced the girlish f lair of the Fifties with
comic caricatures of muscle cars printed on
chiffon, below-the-knee pleated skirts and
pointy sunglasses. At Louis Vuitton, Marc
Jacobs used candy colours such as mint,
bubblegum pink and baby blue against
oversized lace collars, knee-length evening
jackets sans buttons and short prom dresses
worn by models in tiaras.

The British house of Burberry Prorsum saluted
the ‘Swinging Sixties’ with handcrafted
fashion pieces typically worn in the era such as
crocheted shirts, beaded collars, straw hats and
braided accessories. Rockstar trenches cinched
with studded belts and front-button skirts gave
the collection a context in London’s rock and
roll heyday. Chunky beaded belts with thick
leather buckles and crocheted wedges make for
the perfect ‘new-vintage’ look.

Seventies jet setters
& disco divas
As travel became more common in the
Seventies, international style inf luences such as
exotic prints, fabrics and cultural dress like the
kaftan, gypsy garb and the kimono worked their
way into western society. Escada’s exotic trend
this season takes a cue from the Serengeti, using
a warm palette of desert colours. The cut of the
clothes give them a soft, f lowy feel, definitely
something we envision a young Bianca Jagger
wearing to board a private jet with the Rolling
Stones. Versace epitomizes the disco diva with
a collection that has everything from goddesslike dresses with plunging necklines to studded
leather jackets, skirts and bandeau tops.
Every generation has something to offer the
next and fashion has left us with plenty of
style notes to work with. So the decision is
yours, will you be a Clara Bow f lapper girl this
season, a free-spirited Jane Birkin, or both?
Our advice is to have fun with fashion, don’t
limit yourself and explore the boutiques to find
the best of what today’s designers have to offer.

T
he splendour of the Ottoman court belongs to an era
forever etched into the mysterious and mythical history of
Istanbul. Ruling Sultans and their legendary Imperial Harem
of ravishing and exquisitely pampered women resided in
Istanbul’s opulent Topkapi Palace for over four centuries.
Among the historical court’s staff was a head seamstress,
and at one time in history this role belonged to the great
grandmother of Muharrem and Ferhan Gilan, brothers,
descended from one of history’s most decadent dynasties.
Together they have built a jewellery house that pays homage
to a family tradition of great artisan skill. Through innovative
techniques and ancient craftsmanship, Gilan’s inf luence
reaches far and wide from its Turkish outpost.

smanlı sarayının görkemi, İstanbul’un gizemli mitlerle
örülmüş tarihinin her köşesine sinmiştir. Kudretli sultanlar ve
muhteşem kadınlardan oluşan efsanevi haremleri İstanbul’un
şaşaalı Topkapı Sarayı’nda yaklaşık dört yüzyıl yaşadı. Bu
tarihi şehrin sakinleri arasında bir başterzi de bulunuyordu.
Muharrem ve Ferhan Gilan’ın büyük büyükanneleri bir
noktada bu görevi icra etmekteydi. Tarihin en keyfine düşkün
hanedanlarından birinden gelen kardeşler, aile geleneği olan

Contemporary Heritage
Collection
What set the maison’s collections apart are
distinctively contemporary designs and a touch
of old-world style. Necklaces, earrings, rings
and cuffs look as though they could have been
plucked out of an Ottoman heritage collection,
yet they have distinctly contemporary details
that blend old with new for a stunning effect.
Gilan’s Contemporary Heritage Collection is
one of the best examples of this unique quality
with its signature rose-cut diamonds paying
tribute to an ancient stone cutting, while
being set in a unique silver nest that brings out
the diamond’s brilliance.
Markanın tasarımlarını farklı kılan şey, hemen
farkedilen çağdaş tasarımlar ve bir tutam eski
dünya havası. Kolyeler, küpeler, yüzük ve kol
düğmeler adeta bir Osmanlı koleksiyonundan
seçilmiş gibi fakat hepsi aynı zamanda eskiyi
yeniyle etkileyici bir biçimde birleştirecek
çağdaş detaylara sahip. Gilan’ın, pırlantanın
göz kamaştırıcı parlaklığını ortaya çıkaran
gümüş yuvalara yerleştirilmiş, antik bir
tekniğin eseri gül kesim pırlantalardan oluşan
Contemporary Heritage Koleksiyonu, bu
benzersiz özelliğin en önemli örneği.
The design is finished against a contrasting,
hand-engraved, yellow gold mounting. Each
trinket is a conversation piece in and of itself,
especially the rings which are crafted in
various forms from spiraling, cut-out styles to
graceful pear-shaped designs, all adorned with
entrancing white diamonds that would have
inspired Marilyn Monroe to belt out another
verse in her ode to the timeless stones.

Modern screen sirens have adopted their own
penchant for the distinctive baubles such as
Salma Hayek and Drew Barrymore. Stunning
Spaniard Penelope Cruz had a banner year in
2006, garnering an onslaught of praise and
award nominations for her lead role in Pedro
Almodovar’s “Volver.” Cruz opted to pair a
Gilan white gold diamond ring with her soft
pink Marchesa gown at that year’s Golden
Globe Awards. Actress Nicole Kidman has her
own collector’s piece in the form of a heartshaped necklace given to her by her country
music star husband, Keith Urban. What began
as a word-of-mouth business with a select circle
of fanatic clients and jewellery aficionados
has transformed over three decades into an
international jewellery house known for its
stand out styles.

Gilan’s global expansion boasts two f lagship
boutiques and three beautifully designed shops
in its hometown of Istanbul. One f lagship is
located at the city’s premier shopping centre
Istinye Park and another is housed in the Four
Seasons Hotel Istanbul At the Bosphorus.
Gilan can be found in Paris at the famous Ritz
Hotel, St. Tropez, Courchevel, Megeve and
Bahrain. While eyeing future prospects in
Dubai, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Qatar, the
brand has also already made its way across the
pond to North America.
In 2005, Gilan became the first Turkish
jewellery brand to call New York’s Fifth Avenue
home, inaugurating its New York f lagship
just below Central Park. Their unmistakable
ancient-cum-contemporary jewellery has also
found its way into modern day American retail
palaces such as Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman
Marcus – quite a ways away from the city where
the story of Gilan began.
