PORTFOLYO SERiSi 1 3 NİSAN - 12 MAYIS 2013
PORTFOLYO SERiSi 1 3 NİSAN - 12 MAYIS 2013 Küratör MARCUS GRAF PORTFOLYO SERiSi 1 objeleri ne şekilde anladığımızı sorguluyor. Ready made, DADA, Sürrealizm, Bauhaus ve Minimalizm’den etkilenen işleri gerçekliğimizi oluşturan farklı katmanları inceliyor. Yirmi yılı aşkın süredir güçlü ve zorlayıcı işler üreten Gökçebağ, işlerinde içinde bulunduğumuz dünyayı ve birlikte yaşadığımız 1 Küratör PORTFOLIO SERIES 1 Made, DADA, Surrealism, Bauhaus and Minimalism influenced work reviews the numerous layers, which form our realities. Serial multiplication, deformation and deconstruction as well as linearity, clarity and simplicity play fundamental roles in his oeuvre, in which a silent poetry prevails. Often, through ready-made kinds of objects and spatial installations, Gökçebağ translocates ordinary everyday objects out of their usual environment into the context of the gallery. There, in the eyes of the spectator, the items gain new, strange, sometimes even absurd forms and meanings, which propose alternative uses, and therefore can also lead to a questioning of their original function and character. Besides object based works, Gökçebağ also produces photo-pieces, which play with the construction of reality and its photographic representation. There, through optical illusions and manipulations, he also reveals the inefficiency of our eyes and perception. Through his deconstruction of everyday objects, Şakir Gökçebağ goes beyond the known in order to reveal its relativity and proposes alternative ways of experiencing life and society. The artist develops his own views on the world instead of repeating any through In the Portfolyo Series, Plato Sanat reviews and social, cultural or political regimentation and oppression presents important positions within various disciplines mediated absolute truth. That is why Gökçebağ’s work and fields of Turkey’s contemporary art scene by questions our perception of the world, and proposes organizing solo shows, which give an insight in the alternative ways of seeing and understanding it. He also formal and conceptual work of exceptional artists in reminds us of our responsibility to accept as well as their mid-carriers. MARCUS GRAF We are happy to present Şakir Gökçebağ as the Curator first artist in the Portfolyo Series. For over twenty years, he developed a strong and stringent work, in which he questions the way we see and understand the world we live in and the objects we live with. Made’i, 5 ŞAKİR GÖKÇEBAĞ arttığı yıllardı diyebiliriz? Sanatçının emeği her şeyin üstündedir. Bana göre bu, imgelerle yazılmış bir şiir. highlights that you are master of references and that you have borrowed the Ready Made from Duchamp, critical PLATO SANAT irony from Dadaism, our world’s absurd psychology What are the conceptual frameworks that you have been dimensions from Surrealism, the geometric emphasis most concerned with since the 80s, when you began from Bauhaus, and series and mass production from your art education till today? Before 2000, I exhibited my installation and photography works in group exhibitions. ŞAKİR GÖKÇEBAĞ The 80s, for me, was a time to get to know Istanbul, or in other words, to view galleries and art events. Turkey was the provincial part of Europe. I sometimes go from one to the other without finishing the first one. I look at the works periodically, make additions and reductions. As I believe art can be anywhere, every art world? Currently, I’m interested in spatial projects. The daily politics does not exist in my work, at least for PLATO SANAT Does thinking about works that deal with space make everything more concrete for you or do you find this limiting? ŞAKİR GÖKÇEBAĞ Let me explain it like this. In order for me to begin producing an art work, I need a point of departure. This can be a object, it can be a space. At the end of the now. But like every other artist, I’m against impositions, injustices that are asserted without asking the artist first. The artist’s labor is above everything else. PLATO SANAT You had an exhibition called “Tuesday Market.” The photographs included in the exhibition had brought up the issue of the market culture that was being destroyed by urban transformation. Could you talk about this 11 “Tuesday Market” exhibition through the works that you somebody’s home, if there were lots of shoes in front of exhibited? What is your outtake on this topic that is on the door, that would mean that there were lots of guests the agenda these days? there. (Of course in Turkey, in the past, it was as such) ŞAKİR GÖKÇEBAĞ Unfortunately, the Tuesday Market is a thing of the past. But it is important to consider this within the framework of quotidian use. I’m so glad I took those photographs. The first things PLATO SANAT that come to mind when you think of the market are the İlhan Berk, in his poem “Those that were and those goods, the sales people and the buyers. What drew my that were not” writes a poem with objects such as a interest there were the sales tents. Transformations that demolish Istanbul’s history, “Three Primary Prayers”? its authenticity mean the destruction of values that made Istanbul what it is. We are cutting the branch that we are on, unfortunately. ŞAKİR GÖKÇEBAĞ I think if I make a comment on “Three Primary Prayers”, I’d be directing others. This woul harm its mystery. But PLATO SANAT let me re-tell Marcus Graf’s comment, “In this work, Michael Butor, in his Essays on the Novel talks about Gökçebağ arranges three sets of beads in the three the objects having a life history in relation to people’s primary forms of geometry; the artist is trying to form a histories. How does an award are things that are around everybody. A bite, a sweater, affect an artist, how is an artist’s production affected frugality… I think these fit me. In this context, it’s by awards? more important how you transform objects, rather than what they were and how they functioned. It is of course possible to draw psychological analyses about me from the works of course. PLATO SANAT Your shoe installations can be related to the concepts of immigration and identity, what could you say about this? ŞAKİR GÖKÇEBAĞ This award was a surprise for me. I realized that George Maciunas and the fluxus philosophy overlapped with my work on later. Awards’ relationship to artistic production differs from artist to artist. PLATO SANAT Could you talk about the formation of your works with ŞAKİR GÖKÇEBAĞ fruits and vegetables? How did the process of producing It would be wrong draw concrete conclusions from the symmetrical images of peppers, watermelons and installations that I make with shoes. The first installation apples develop? was called “Guests.” This was becaue when you came to 12 ŞAKİR GÖKÇEBAĞ the patterns on the carpet, or did you just use the First was the “Linear Spirits” series that I did by pieces of that carpet? Could you talk about your series stitching the photographs with thread. Later, with a Reorientation? similar concept, I went on to the photography series in which tree leaves were cut in their natural positions. As I like playing with things around me, I took a series of photographs in 2005 with seeds on top of cut watermelons. These photographs were the first beginning of the fruit-vegetable series. Later, it continued with watermelons, apples, peppers, beans, and pomegranates. PLATO SANAT The installations that you do with shoes, belts, clips probably require a further experience than construction, design and application, through the sheer task of ŞAKİR GÖKÇEBAĞ For that work, I used all of the pieces that were cut from the carpet. When I was placing these pieces on top of each other, the order did not change and the carpet’s pattern became a bit different, staying almost the same. Or re-organized. PLATO SANAT In your work, Toccata&Fugue, the umbrellas were presented without an order, similar to the Prefix & Suffix series. What is the relationship between these two series, other than the sameness of the object. finding these objects. Are there times when you can’t ŞAKİR GÖKÇEBAĞ find the object that you’re looking for? For example, Yes, in both works, the object is the same. In one, the I remember your having used the wood clips from my umbrella is closed, while the other is closed. But both of childhood in your Clothespin and Loundry Rock work, do the known, unchanged states evoke a well-known image these still exist? in our minds. I questioned the clichéd state of these ŞAKİR GÖKÇEBAĞ images. For me, this is a poem written with images. It is really difficult for me to find and keep the materials. It is easy to do something experimental with a couple. But when an exhibition is being realized and when I need to find multiples of that object, it is a problem. Preserving all of these is also a problem. As I cannot keep objects that require a large space, I have destroyed many things. If I’m re-exhibiting, I have to re-purchase things and there are a lot of things that I couldn’t find— things that were no longer produced. There is such a long list of things to buy. It is possible to pay those wooden clips that you mentioned. For example, in Tahtakale. These clips used to be larger and were of better quality. But now, most people use plastic clips.
