way along the boulevards, the splendour of Red Square,
the frescoes at the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, the
metro stations, each of which you must visit as you would a
museum, the restaurants and cafés that still retain an air of
Tsarist Russia, Gorki Park or Izmaylovski Park with trees in
all the colours of autumn… Our first article about Moscow is
about the city’s history, its classics, what you absolutely must

Moskova’da ilk metro, Devlet Başkanı Josef
Stalin’in emriyle 15 Mayıs 1935’te açılıyor. 11
kilometre boyunca Sokolniki – Smolenskaya
arasında 13 hattı birbirine bağlayan bu demiryolu, şu anda 313 kilometre. 188 duraklı bu metroyu, günde ortalama 7 milyon kişi
kullanıyor… Sovyet Sosyalist Cumhuriyetler
Birliği’nin (SSCB) en şaşaalı projelerinden biri
olarak düşünülen metronun durakları, avizeler,
mermerler, heykeller ve duvar resimleriyle bu dönemde
tanışıyor. Metro değil, her biri bir galeri adeta.
The first metro in Moscow opened on 15 May 1935,
under President Josef Stalin's orders. This railway
11 kilometres long, linking 13 lines between Sokolniki
and Smolenskaya, is currently 313 kilometres
long. With 188 stops, the metro is used by some 7
million people every day. The chandeliers, marble
statues and wall paintings were introduced to the
stations of the metro, considered one of the most
spectacular projects of the Union of Soviet Socialist
Republics, throughout this period. Every station looks more
like a gallery than an underground station.

Mayakovskaya: Welcome to the most
beautiful metro station in Moscow (according
to the experts). This futuristic station, which
is mentioned in the Soviet poet Vladimir
Mayakovsky's works, was used as a shelter
during the Second World War. Stalin delivered
his speech from its corridors on 7 November

I’m going to recommend three places; all three offer
beautiful, aerial views of Moscow:
1 White Rabbit, with 360-degrees of glass windows
overlooking the city (Smolensky Passage Centre, 16th
Floor - Metro: Smolenskaya).
2 Buono, on top of one of Stalin's skyscrapers. Here you
can enjoy Italian cuisine (Kutuzovskiy alley, 2/1, building №
1 - Metro: Kievskaya).
3 Sixty, on the 62nd floor of Federation Tower, offers
the city's most popular fusion cuisine. Here, you can try
unusual flavours (Presnenskaya emb. 12 / Federatsia Tower,

Moscow is a fascinating city that gets its name from the
river that runs through the area. It was founded on seven hills
in the 10th century by the Slavic race, and quickly became
one of the world's most important centres of finance, art and
commerce. It is a true metropolis spanning 40 kilometres
from north to south, and about 30 kilometres east to west.
For this reason, it’s impossible to fit Moscow's iconic symbols
into five bullet points. But if your time is limited you can at
least see the buildings I’m about to list and travel back to
centuries-old Moscow.
Red Square: This famous square, which covers an area of
exactly 73,000 square metres, is said to be the where the
cornerstone was laid for the foundation of Moscow.

There are several rumours about its name. The first is that
the word ‘red’ (KpacHo) is used to mean beautiful in Russian,
so Red Square means ‘Beautiful Square’. The second is that
the Tsar gave the square this name because the surrounding
wooden buildings were constantly burning down. The last is
that the square was named thus because of the vast amount
of bloodshed that occurred there. These days it’s the centre
of splendour and glory, because if you stand in the middle,
you’ll see the Kremlin behind you with its red brick walls, the
coloured towers of St. Basil's Cathedral to your right, the Gum
120 year-old shopping centre built of rustic stone, steel and
glass in front and Moscow Museum of History, again of red
brick, to your left.

Kurtarıcı İsa Katedrali: 1872 yılında Rusların Napolyon’a karşı kazandığı zaferin anısına 1883’te kutsanarak halka açılıyor. Bu görkemli yapı, hem dünyanın en
büyük Ortodoks ibadethanesi hem de Rusya’da halka
bağışlanan ilk katedral olma özelliğini taşıyor. 1931’de
Stalin’in din karşıtı politikası sebebiyle yıktırılan katedralin som altın kubbeleri ve içindeki değerli altın
fresk ve ikonalar devlet hazinesine aktarılıyor. 1990’lı
yıllarda Rus Ortodoks Kilisesi'ne itibarının iade edilmesinin ardından 2000’de yeniden açılıyor.

Bolshoi Theatre: Bolshoi, which is today one of the most
important stages in the world, not just in Russia, has raised
such world-class names as opera singers Fyodor Chaliapin and
Galina Vichnevskaïa, and ballet dancers Galina Sergeyevna
Ulánova, Mikhail Baryshnikov and Maris Liepa.
The Cathedral of Christ the Saviour: It was consecrated and
opened to the public in 1883 to commemorate the Russian
victory against Napoleon in 1872. This stately building is not
only one of the world's tallest Orthodox Christian places of
worship but also the first cathedral in Russia to be bestowed
on the people. The cathedral was demolished in 1931 due to
Stalin's anti-religious policy, at which point the solid gold
domes, precious gold frescoes and icons were transferred
to the state treasury. The cathedral reopened in 2000,
following the return of the Russian Orthodox Church to
society in the 1990s.

Moscow prices are higher than the Turkey average. The
most expensive shops like Chanel, Prada and Louis Vuitton are
lined up along Stoleshnikov Pereulok and Bolshaya Dimitrovka
Street. It’s worth a visit, if just to marvel at the shop windows.
Gum, commissioned by Alexander Pomerantsev in 1890
and modelled on the London railway stations, is one of the
most beautiful shopping centres in the world, let alone
Moscow. There are some great shoe shops and a gourmet
supermarket where you can find anything you need, in this
imposing building on Red Square.
