PREVIEW : OLYMPIQUE DE MARSEILLE - MONTPELLIER HÉRAULT SC
Olympique de Marseille - Montpellier Hérault SC Feature Preview
Just a week after they locked horns in Ligue 1, defending champions Marseille and Montpellier will fight it out for the first trophy of
2011 in the Coupe de la Ligue final at the Stade de France...
Last season Marseille won the Ligue 1/Coupe de la Ligue double and Didier Deschamps' side remain very much in the hunt for a
repeat performance this season, providing they make it two wins in six days over Montpellier.
Taye Taiwo's 82nd-minute penalty secured a come-from-behind 2-1 win for OM at the Stade de la Mosson after Olivier Giroud's
64th-minute opener had been cancelled out by André-Pierre Gignac. However, the dress rehearsal turned sour ten minutes from time
when OM and France international forward Loic Rémy and Montpellier's Morocco international defender Abdelhamid El Kaoutari were
sent from the field meaning both will miss Saturday's showcase at the Stade de France.
Scorer Giroud, who took his Ligue 1 tally to ten for the season against OM, believes last weekend's loss will only spur Montpellier on
to bigger and better things.
"I think we played well, even better than well against Marseille," said last season's Ligue 2 player of the year. "In my opinion, there are
plenty of positives to take from the game. Everyone's put the loss behind us now and we're all determined to learn from it and be even
stronger this Saturday at the Stade de France.
"The key to the match will be our unity and team spirit," continued the former Tours front man. "We have everything to gain and they
have everything to lose: the pressure is on their shoulders! Everyone expects Marseille to win and retain their trophy. On the other, it
would be something incredible for us and the club. We're going to do everything we possibly can to take this Cup back to Montpellier."
Currently second in the league and the form side in Ligue 1 since the turn of the year, Marseille are favourites and midfielder Benoît
Cheyrou, who set up Gignac's equaliser last Sunday with a visionary through-ball, is more than happy to bear the weight of
expectation.
"We not going to shirk our responsibilities or the favourites tag," said the former Lille and Auxerre midfielder. "When you play for OM
you have to cope with this type of pressure week-in, week-out. If you can handle living up to the favourites tag, you shouldn't sign for
Marseille."
Marseille whose 3-1 victory in last season's final over Bordeaux set them on their way to the domestic double, have been eking out
victories in recent weeks, but Cheyrou doesn't expect that to change this Saturday: "I think we were probably playing better football
two years ago, but at the end of the day, we finished the season second and without a Cup. I'd love to play good football, but at the
moment, we're winning and that's the most important thing. A final isn't about playing football, it's all about winning."
Montpellier are making their first ever trip to the Stade de France. They have won two French Cups - in 1929 and 1990 and finished
losing finalist in 1931 and 1994. Their opponents Marseille are France's most successful club boasting nine Ligue 1 titles, ten French
Cups and last season's first ever Coupe de la Ligue trophy.

Olympique de Marseille - Montpellier Hérault SC
-HISTORY: As fate would have it, these two sides met just last weekend in Week 31 of Ligue 1, with Marseille coming from behind to
register a 2-1 victory at the Stade de la Mosson.
-MHSC target man Olivier Giroud fired the home side in front (64') only for André-Pierre Gignac to equalise (69') and Taye Taiwo to
give OM all three points from the penalty spot (82'). OM's Loic Rémy and MHSC's Abdelhamid El Kaoutari were both sent off for
fighting after the award of the 79th-minute penalty, dispatched by Taiwo.
-The win confirmed Marseille's historical edge over Montpellier, taking their tally of matches won to 12 in 32 clashes, as opposed to
Montpellier's five wins (all at home).
-OM previous victory in Montpellier dated back to season 2003-04, when a certain Didier Drogba scored the only goal of the game.
-The last four league encounters between the two sides have produced a total of 15 goals.
-Montpellier's biggest win in this fixture came 3-1 in season 1999-00, while OM's 4-0 win at the Stade Vélodrome in Week 15 of the
current campaign is their biggest triumph. Lucho Gonzalez (20'), Benoît Cheyrou (28'), Mathieu Valbuena (65') and Loic Rémy (90'+2)
scored in what remains Marseille's biggest league win of the season and Montpellier's worst defeat.
-The 5-4 result at the Vélodrome in Week 3 of the 1998-99 season is the most famous result between the two sides, before
Saturday's Cup final. Montpellier were leading 4-0 at half-time (Ibrahima Bakayoko 15', 34', Pierre Robert 19', Franck Sauzée 23')
only for OM to score five goals in the last 30 minutes (Florian Maurice 61', Christophe Dugarry 64', 71', Eric Roy 84', Laurent Blanc
pen 90'). Blanc scoring the winner in the final seconds against his former club.
-MARSEILLE
-GENERAL: OM are defending Coupe de la Ligue champions having beaten Bordeaux 3-1 in the final last season. After a scoreless
first half Souleymane Diawara (61'), Mathieu Valbuena (68') and a Mathieu Chalmé own goal (77') fired OM three goals to the good
before Lamine Sané headed home a consolation goal for Bordeaux (85').
-Marseille sit second on the Ligue 1 table, one point behind leaders Lille and five points clear of third-placed Lyon.
-Didier Deschamps' men are currently unbeaten in five games (four wins).
-Marseille have lost just one in the 15 league matches since Week 16's 1-0 defeat in Nice: 2-1 to Lille in Week 26. OM have the best
record in the league since the turn of the year, having notched 29 points from nine wins and two draws. Leaders Lille have taken 24
points in the same period.
-Marseille have won a league-topping 11 matches by a single-goal margin this season. Montpellier and Nice have each clocked nine.
-The only two times Marseille have lost by more than a one-goal margin this season was their 2-0 Champions League defeat away to
Chelsea on 29 September, 2010 and their 3-1 round-of-64 exit from the Coupe de France at the hands of Evian TG FC on 9 January,
2011.
-Marseille have the league's best away record in Ligue 1 with 29 points from their eight wins and five draws - scoring 22 goals and
conceding 13 - on the road this season.
-In-form France striker Loïc Rémy currently tops the OM scoring charts with ten goals (five at home and five away).
-André Ayew is OM's top scorer in the Coupe de la Ligue this season with two goals.
-CHAMPIONS LEAGUE: Marseille qualified for the last-16 of the Champions League for the first time since lifting the trophy back in
1993. They were eliminated at the hands of Manchester United, 2-1 on aggregate after the first match at the Stade Vélodrome ended
in a scoreless draw.
-Javier Hernandez scored twice at Old Trafford with Wes Brown netting an own goal for OM.
-FRENCH CUP: OM were knocked out by Ligue 2 high-flyers Evian TG FC 3-1 in the round-of-64 on 9 January, 2011.
-INJURIES: Didier Deschamps' only injury worries are long-term absentees Cesar Azpilicueta (knee) and Julien Rodriguez (ankle).
-SUSPENSION: Loic Rémy will miss the Coupe de la Ligue final after being sent off in the 79th minute of the two sides Ligue 1

meeting last weekend. Rémy was awarded a penalty after having his shirt pulled by Montpellier defender Abdelhamid El Kaoutari but
lashed out at the Morocco international in the resulting scuffle.
-MONTPELLIER
-GENERAL: Montpellier dropped to eighth on the Ligue 1 ladder last weekend when they suffered a 2-1 home loss to Marseille.
Olivier Giroud opened the scoring with his tenth of the campaign (64') only for André-Pierre Gignac (69') and Taye Taiwo (pen. 82') to
fire OM to victory.
-René Girard's side has won just one of their last seven league outings (1-0 in Toulouse in Week 29).
-Montpellier's total of 26 goals for the season is the third-lowest tally in the league (better only than Nice and bottom club
Arles-Avignon) while their defence, which has conceded on just 23 occasions, is the division's sixth-best.
-Seven different Montpellier players have scored with headers (Garry Bocaly, Souleymane Camara, Abdelhamid El Kaoutari, Joris
Marveaux, Emir Spahic and Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa), a league record in the current campaign.
-Ten of Montpellier's 27 goals have been scored with headers this season, the highest proportion (38%) of any Ligue 1 team.
-Montpellier have scored three own goals in their last five matches (Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa against PSG in Week 27, Joris Marveaux
against Lens in Week 28 and Geoffrey Jourdren against Nice in Week 30).
-Montpellier conceded their first penalty of the season last weekend against Marseille.
-Powerful forward Olivier Giroud is the club's top scorer for the season with ten goals (five at home, five away).
-Turkish striker Hasan Kabze is Montpellier's top scorer in the Coupe de la Ligue with three goals.
-Chile international Marco Estrada leads the club's assist table after setting up five goals for his teammates this season.
-EUROPA LEAGUE: Montpellier were eliminated from the Europa League in the third preliminary qualifier, losing on penalties to
Hungarian side Gyori, after the two-legged tie finished 1-1 on aggregate.
-FRENCH CUP: MHSC lost 1-0 to Reims in the Rd-of-64 on 8 January, 2011.
-INJURIES: Defender and former club captain Nenad Dzodic, who has missed all but three matches this season, is still out with a
thigh injury but has resumed with the reserve side.
-SUSPENSION: Bosnia defender Emir Spahic, currently serving a seven-match ban for an elbow on Jemaa in the loss to Lens, will
miss the match.
-Fellow central defender Abdelhamid El Kaoutari is also suspended, sent off last weekend against Marseille for two yellow card
offences, including giving away the match-winning penalty on Loic Rémy.
-Matches this season featuring Montpellier have seen a total of 12 red cards handed out, the most for any Ligue 1 club in the current
campaign.
-TRIVIA: Montpellier defender Garry Bocaly began his career at Marseille's youth academy before going out on loan to the MHSC for
the 2008-09 season (4 goals). He returned to Marseille and spent the first half of the next season there before being loaned back to
Montpellier in January 2010. The move was made permanent last summer.
-Montpellier have never played an official match at the Stade de France since the stadium was opened in 1998.
Olympique de Marseille
-Marseille have been crowned Ligue 1 champions nine times (1937, '48, '71, '72, '89, '90, '91, '92, 2010) - second only to
Saint-Etienne who have ten L1 titles.
-OM are also the most successful club in the history of the French Cup with ten crowns (1924, '26, '27, '35, '38, '43, '69, '72, '76, '89)
and won the League Cup for the first time in 2010.

-The 2009-10 season was coach Didier Deschamps' first in charge and by winning both the Ligue 1 title and the League Cup he
brought an end to a 17-year trophy drought.
-OM were stripped of the Ligue 1 title in 1993, after being found guilty of match-fixing.
-Marseille are the only French club ever to win Europe's number one club prize, the European Cup or Champions League, when they
defeated AC Milan 1-0 in 1993, thanks to a second-half header from defender Basile Boli.
-Marseille have also made three other continental cup finals: in 1991 they lost the European Cup final against Red Star Belgrade on
penalties, they were beaten by Parma in the UEFA Cup final in 1999, then lost to Valencia in the showpiece of the same competition
five years later.
-OM are also France's best-supported club, averaging 49,658 fans at home games last season. The figure would have been higher
still but for the first home game of the season having to be staged at Montpellier because the Stade Vélodrome was out of
commission.
-Coach Didier Deschamps captained OM to European Cup glory in 1993 and France to the World Cup in 1998 and European
Championship in 2000.
-The club's major shareholder Robert-Louis Dreyfus died on July 4 2009 after a long illness. Dreyfus' wife Margarita is now the club
owner.
-Argentine international Lucho Gonzalez became the club's record signing when he joined from Portuguese champions Porto in July
2009 for a fee reported to be 18 million Euros.
Montpellier Hérault SC
-The club was founded in 1919 as Stade Olympique Montpelliérain and adopted its current name, Montpellier Hérault Sport Club, in
1989.
-The 2010-11 campaign is Montpellier's 19th in the French top flight. The club has never won the Ligue 1 crown. Last season's
surprise fifth-place finish was the club's best since they achieved their record placing of third in 1987-88.
-Montpellier have twice won the French Cup - in 1929 and 1990. The club was a losing finalist in 1931 and 1994.
-Current coach René Girard was named in June 2009 to replace former Marseille boss Rolland Courbis, who saved the side from
relegation to the amateur third division in 2007 and earned promotion to Ligue 1 in 2008-09.
-Girard won the French league three times with Bordeaux (1984, '85, '87) and two French Cups (1986, '87). A defensive midfielder,
he played seven times for France, scoring once.
-Current France coach Laurent Blanc is the club's all-time leading goal scorer with 48 Ligue 1 strikes.
-Colombian striker Victor Hugo Montano, who departed for Rennes this summer, finished last season as the club's top scorer with 11
goals.
-Montpellier returned to Ligue 1 for the 2009-10 season after finishing second in Ligue 2 the previous campaign, two points behind
champions Lens.
-The MHSC had last played in Ligue 1 in the 2003-04 campaign.
-Current owner and club president Louis Nicollin took over the club in 1974.
-In 1990-91, in a team that featured Carlos Valderrama, Blanc and Eric Cantona, the club qualified for the quarter-finals of the Cup
Winners' Cup after defeating powerhouses PSV Eindhoven and Steaua Bucharest before losing to eventual winners Manchester
United (1-1 away; 0-2 at home).
