A long history of service with local parks
By Fallan Patterson, Forum Publishing Group
May 9,2014
After a 46-year career in parks and recreation in South Florida, Ray Lopez left his office
at Brian Piccolo Park in Cooper City April 30 a retired man.
adv erl l ~emel1 t
During the last five decades, Lopez worked in Broward, Miami-Dade, Palm Beach and St. Lucie
counties as everything from superintendent and park manager to overseeing Major League Baseball
spring training for the New York Mets.
"It's been a great career," Lopez said. "But I figured it was time to move on."
Lopez came to South Florida from Manhattan on a baseball scholarship playing second base at the
then-Miami Dade Junior College (now Miami Dade College).
Planning to become a physical education teacher, he switched goals after former Congresswoman
Carrie Meek, who taught recreation management, told Lopez that the future of the field was in
government parks and recreation departments.
After graduating from Florida International University with bachelor's and master's degrees in parks
and recreation , he spent 12 years with Dade as a parks supervisor.
"I started working for them while I was in college because they paid for 80 percent of your tuition if
you promised to stay for at least two years," Lopez said.
He then became director of parks and recreation for Miami Springs, a position he held for 18 years.
Later, he moved to St. Lucie County to oversee the Mets' spring training - a dream for a native New
Yorker - and the Florida State League, along with 119 park facilities and 22 miles of beaches.
Lopez spent three years with Lauderhill as an operations administrator before finishing out the last
eight years of his career with Bnnu mi Cuu nl v .
He started out as superintendent of 12 parks and 400 employees in the southwest district, later
becoming a manager of Piccolo Park.
"He was very dedicated. He loved everything about parks and rec," said Brian McLaughlin, manager
for C.B. Smith Park in Pembroke Pines. " . .. He's got a lot of history. That doesn't come around all the
time."
Lopez also coached baseball for Westminster Christian School and the Perrine Khoury Baseball
Association in Miami-Dade, where he helped hone the talent of such pro players as Alex Rodriguez,

Shannon Stewart, Daniel Perkins and his son and favorite player, Mickey Lopez, who played for the
Seattle Mariners.
While he plans to travel with his wife Daisy and visit their 11 grandchildren, Lopez also has three job
offers he's considering, including one as a part-time scout for an MLB team .
"I've worked my entire life, since I was 15. It's been an interesting life," he said. "For now, I'm just
going to enj oy my time off."

UK, France 12013193 min I Comedy, Drama I Rated R
Academy Award winner Jim Broadbent (Iris, Topsy-Turvy, Another Year) and lindsay Duncan (About Time , Alice in Wonderland, Mansfield Park) give exquisite performances as
Nick and rv'eg, a long-married British couple revisiting Paris for the first time since their honeymoon in an aMempt to rekindle their relationship. During a two-day escapade,
diffident, wistful Nick and demanding, take-charge rv'eg careen from harmony to disharmony to resignation and back again as they take stock of haifa lifetime of deep
tenderness -- and even deeper regret. A surprise invitation from Nick's old friend rv'organ (Jeff GOldblum), an amusingly eccentric American academic with a fancy Parisian
address, soon leads them to an unexpectedly hopeful vis ion of what their love and marriage might s till become. This magically buoyant, bittersweet romantic comedy, starring
two of Britain's national treasures , is a new peak in the ongoing collaboration between screenwriter Hanif Kureis hi and director Roger Michell, following Venus, The !vbther and

(Koh Jia Ler) trabaja redactando cartas
de despido; e1 marido (Tianwen Chen) se
tamba1ea en su insegura labor de vende
dor. Sus vidas giran en torno a1 mas
pequeno del mlcleo familiar, un nino
insufrib1e Hamado Jia1e (Koh Jia Ler),
