DEAR READER,
Eğitim-öğretim yılının temposu genelde yaz tatili yaklaşırken
yavaş yavaş düşer; ama öğrencilere ve öğretmenlere soracak
olursanız bu saptamaya kesinlikle karşı çıkacaklardır; çünkü
takvimlerinde yaklaşan daha birçok çok önemli tarih var. Öğrencileri
dönem sınavlarına hazırlamak için daha çok deneme sınavı, yılın
değerlendirilecek son ev ödevleri ve çalışmaları yaklaşıyor. Okulda
her dersin yıllık programının yanında bütün programları başarılı
bir şekilde tamamlama, yıl sonu gösterilerine hazırlanma telaşı var.
Yılın bu son aylarında gerçekten de “yavaşlamak” yerine “hızlanan”
bu tempo TAC’de hala canlı bir şekilde devam eden dopdolu bir hayat
olduğunu gösteriyor ki, elinizdeki derginin isminden de bu açıkça
anlaşılıyor.
Böyle bir dönemde resmin tamamını akılda tutmak büyük
önem taşıyor. İstatistikler, öğrencilerin genel akademik başarı
düzeyinin yükselişte olduğunu gösteriyor. Öğrenciler, akademik
konulardaki çalışmalarını resim, müzik ve spor dallarında sunulan
fırsatlardan yararlanarak dengeliyorlar. Öğrencilerin içsel öğrenme
motivasyonlarının artmasını sağlayacak odak alanlarını belirlemek
konusuna velilerin ilgisi de TAC’nin programını güçlendiren diğer
bir etken.
Herhangi bir eğitim kurumunun kalitesi ve büyümesi, herşeyden
önce süregelen bir öz değerlendirme, ciddi değerlendirmeler, dürüst
tartışmalar ve bunların takip süreci yanında, okul camiasının her
bir paydaşının sürekli gelişim kavramına bağlılığını gerektirir.
Öğrencilerden, öğretmen ve velilerden gelen görüşleri ve geri
bildirimleri okulla ilgili somut veriler ve istatistikler ışığında
değerlendirmek en büyük önceliğimiz olmalıdır. Bütün bu
alanlardaki çabalara yapıcı bir şekilde katkıda bulunan herkese içten
teşekkürlerimizi sunuyoruz.
Dergimizin sayfalarında Tarsus Amerikan Koleji’nde 2011-2012
eğitim-öğretim yılının ikinci döneminin önemli etkinliklerini
ve olaylarını gözden geçirmenizi, okul toplumumuzun geçirdiği
hareketli günlerin ve başarıların yeniden keyfini çıkarmanızı
diliyoruz. Bunları sizlerle paylaşabilmekten mutluluk duyuyoruz.
A school year usually “winds down” as the summer vacation
approaches yet if you were to ask students and teachers if this is
currently the case, chances are that they would strongly disagree.
An increasing number of deadlines need to be met, more mock
exams are scheduled to prepare students for semester exams,
and the final homework assignments are soon becoming due.
The rush is on to complete each subject’s required curriculum, to
bring all programs to a successful conclusion, and to prepare for
end-of-the year performances. The pace of these final months
at TAC seems to be winding “up” rather than winding “down,” an
indication that there is still plenty of “on-going” life at TAC which
is actually reflected even in the title of this publication “TAC Life.”
Keeping the big picture in mind is important at a time like
this. Statistics show that the overall level of student academic
performance is on the rise. To balance out academics,
more students are taking advantage of the increased
offerings in the areas of art, music, and sports. Parent
interest in regard to constructively identifying focus areas
which will help to promote more intrinsically motivated
student learning are strengthening TAC’s program.
The quality and growth of any school organization requires
ongoing self-examination, serious reflection, frank discussions,
follow-up, and a commitment to continuous improvement
on the part of all stake holders, Evaluating comments and
concerns from students, teachers, and parents in light of
available school related data and statistics must remain a
priority. To all those who have constructively contributed
to these efforts we express our sincere thanks.
We hope these next pages will familiarize the reader
with the many activities and highlights which took place
at Tarsus American College during the second semester
of the 2011-2012 school year. Enjoy re-living some of
the events and achievements of our school community.

Fransa şiirlerle şarkılarla
TAC’dEydİ
İkinci yabancı dili Fransızca olan öğrenciler,
tüm dünyayla birlikte Frankofoni Günü’nü
kutladı.
Tarsus Amerikan Koleji’nde tüm dünyada olduğu gibi
20 Mart’ta ‘Frankofoni Günü’ kutlandı. Okulun ikinci yabancı
dil olarak Fransızca’yı seçen öğrenciler, çeşitli etkinlikler
gerçekleştirdiler; şiirler, şarkılar ve skeçler sundular.
Beş kıtada, 43 ülkede, 200 milyondan fazla insanının
konuştuğu Fransızca her yıl 20 Mart’ta Frankofoni
etkinliklerinde kutlanıyor. Fransızca “la Francophonie”
kelimesi dilimize Frankofoni olarak taşınmış, “Fransızca
konuşmak” anlamına gelen kelimeden türetilmiş.
Frankofon ise, “Fransızca konuşan” anlamına geliyor.
Bu nedenle etkinlik, tüm dünyada Fransızca konuşan
herkesin katılımıyla kutlanıyor.
French Poetry and Songs at TAC
Students studying French as a second language
celebrated the International Francophonie Day.

Celebrated around the world annually in March, students
also joined in for the first time in the school’s history to
celebrate International Francophonie Day at TAC. Students
who elected to study French as a second language organized
a wide variety of activities, including poetry readings,
theater sketches, and songs.
On March 20 of every year, more than 200 million speakers
of French in 43 different countries on all five continents
celebrate Francophonie day with a wide range of exciting
cultural activities. The word “francophone” is used to
describe a French speaker while the word “francophonie” is
used to describe the French-speaking world. International
Francophonie Day is a chance for French-speakers all over
the world to come together and celebrate their francophonie!

OH LA LA... Paris’teyiz!
Tarsus Amerikan Koleji’nde uygulanan “Duvarsız Sınıflar”
programı ile hazırlık, 9. ve 10. sınıflardan 7 öğrenci, 7-13
Nisan tarihleri arasında dünyanın en güzel kentlerinden
biri olan Paris’teydi.
Louvre Müzesi ve Versaille Sarayı’nı gezerek sanat
tarihinin pek çok ünlü yapıtını yakından görme fırsatı
yakalayan öğrenciler, hep birlikte Paris’te olmanın
tadını çıkardı. Öğrenciler, Seine Nehri kenarındaki
kafelerde zaman geçirerek, kentin günlük yaşamına dahil
oldu, sokak sanatçılarıyla tanışarak farklı bir dünyayı
gözlemledi. Paris gezisi süresince Fransızcalarını
kullanma fırsatı da yakaladılar. Gezinin en ilgi çekici
noktalarından biri ise, 1889 yılında inşa edilen ve Paris’in
simgesi haline gelen Eiffel Kulesi’nin en üst katına çıkarak
kenti gece buradan izlemeleri oldu.
Oh la la! We’re in Paris!
As part of the “Classrooms Without Walls” program, TAC’s
second foreign languages department organized a week’s
trip for students to one of the most beautiful cities in the
world during the April break.
Students experienced the magic of Paris together as they
visited the many famous artistic and historical sites and
monuments of the city, including the Louvre Museum and
the Palace of Versailles. In cafes along the banks of the
river Seine they became a part of daily Parisian life, spoke
with street musicians and marveled at a world that was
entirely new to them. Throughout the trip and especially
on their night out, they had the opportunity to practice and
strengthen their French. One of the highlights of the trip
was visiting the symbol of Paris, the Eiffel Tower, which
was built in 1889. After climbing to the very top of the tower,
students could see all of Paris by night.

Adanalı öğrenciler Almanca
şarkılar seslendirdi
Özel Adana Final Okulları’nda 15 Mayıs’ta Benim En Güzel
Almanca Şarkım / Mein schönstes deutsches Lied adlı şarkı
yarışması gerçekleştirildi. Tüm katılımcılara katılım belgesi
ve bir CD’nin armağan edildiği yarışmada Tarsus Amerikan
Koleji’ni 9. sınıf öğrencisi Gülşen Öztosun başarılı solo
performansıyla temsil etti. Türk Alman Kültürel İşbirliği
Derneği tarafından Goethe Enstitüsü’nün desteği ile
düzenlenen yarışma ile, Almanca öğrenime öğrencilerin
ilgisinin artırılması, farklı okuldan öğrencilerin tanışması
ve beraber eğlenmeleri amaçlandı. Tüm Adana’dan
aralarında Gündoğdu Koleji, Final Okulları, Çeaş Anadolu
Lisesi, Çağ Koleji’nin de bulunduğu 8 lisenin katıldığı
yarışmaya, 9. sınıftan başlamak üzere tüm sınıflardan
bireysel, grup ya da küçük senfoni olarak, Almanca pop,
halk, rap ve benzeri şarkılarla katılım sağlandı.
The Most Beautiful German
Songs in Adana
On May 15th the Özel Adana Final Schools held “My Most
Beautiful German Song” (Mein Schönstes Deutsches Lied).
This song competition was held in Adana. All participants in
the competition received a certificate of participation and a
CD. Gülşen Öztosun from grade 9 successfully represented
Tarsus American College with a solo performance. The
competition was made possible with the support of the
Turkish German Cultural Exchange Institute and the Goethe
Institute. The aim was to increase student interest in the
German language and create an opportunity for students
from different schools to meet and have fun. Students (grade
9 and above) from eight different schools in Adana, including
Gündoğdu College, Final Schools, Çeaş Anadolu High School,
and Çağ College participated in the competition, performing
songs either individually, in ensemble, or with a small
orchestra, with styles ranging from pop to folk, rap to reggae.

buluştu
Tarsus Amerikan Koleji’nde Yeme – İçme
Ünitesi'nde öğrenciler, uygulamalı çalışmalarını
birbirlerine Almanca konuşarak sundu.
Bu çalışmalarda yaşayarak, uygulayarak öğrenen tüm
9. sınıf öğrencileri, yaptıkları yemekleri, pastaları
birbirlerine Almanca sunarak derslerinin zevkle
işlenmesini sağladı. Bu şekilde de bildiklerini gerçek
hayata geçirmiş oldular.
German Delights at TAC
As part of the “food and drink unit,”
TAC students applied their oral German
communication skills in speaking with each
other.
Grade 9 students made classes even more exciting by
offering each other home cooked food using their knowledge
of German. Using their language skills in real life situations
helped to personalize their experiences and to make this
special unit more meaningful.

tarihlerinde düzenlenen 10.
sınıflar Konya Mevlana proje
gezisine yoğun katılım oldu.
Hemen her ülkeden binlerce
ziyâretçiyi yalnız 17 Aralık’ta
değil, yıl boyunca Konya’ya
çeken Mevlana’nın dünyaya
sunduğu dostluk ve uyum
geziye damgasını vurdu.

On 16-18 December the
TAC’s Turkish language
and literature department
organized the 6th annual
“Konya-Rumi” field trip
for the 10th grade. Many
students joined the trip.
Thousands of visitors from
all over the world come to
Konya yearly, and also on
December 17, to celebrate
Şeb-i Arus ceremony. This
year’s field trip resulted
in a feeling of the love and
harmony that Rumi gave to
the world.
Konya’da Mevlana Celaleddin–i Rumi’nin
ölüm yıldönümü olan 17 Aralık’taki “Şeb–i
Arus” etkinliklerini görmek amacı ile
beş yıldır gerçekleştirilen proje gezisi,
bu yıl edebiyat öğretmeni Sabahattin
Özkan ve Lise Müdür Yardımcısı Mutlu
Kader’in gözetiminde yapıldı.
Gezi kapsamında öğrenciler Alaeddin
Camii, Sahip Ata Külliyesi, İplikçi Camii
ve Medresesi, Mevlânâ Türbesi ve Dergâhı,
Arkeoloji, Karatay ve Mevlânâ Müzelerini
ziyaret etti. Karınlarını Konya mutfağına
özgü yemeklerle doyurdular. “Mevlânâ
İhtifali’ne özgü semâ törenini ilgiyle izleyen
öğrencilerimiz, törenin kendilerine mânevi bir
huzur kazandırdığını samimiyetle söylerken,
fotoğraf ve video çekmeyi ihmal etmediler.
Tarsus’a dönmeden önce son gün, Meram’daki
Lystra Hatun Sarayı'nı da gezen öğrenciler
gezinin kısalığına üzülürlerken, ne kadar çok
şey gördüklerini ve öğrendiklerini belirttiler.

“Gezinin en güzel yanı, öğrencilerimizi ve
onların birbirleriyle olan yakın ilişkilerini
yakından tanımamızı sağlaması oldu” derken,
edebiyat öğretmenimiz Sabahattin Özkan
da “Bugüne dek yola çıktığım en uyumlu
gruptu. Oldukça renkli ve bilgilendirici bir
gezi oldu” değerlendirmesinde bulundu.
This year’s trip was supervised by
Turkish language and literature teacher
Sabahattin Özkan and Mutlu Kader, high
school dean. This trip was especially
well timed as it fell on December 17,
the anniversary of Mevlana Celaleddin
Rumi’s death, which is commemorated
by the Şeb-i Arus ceremony.
During the trip students visited the
Alaeddin Mosque, the Sahip Ata Mosque
Complex, the İplikçi Mosque and the
madrasah, Rumi’s tomb and Dervish
Lodge, and the Archeology, Karatay and
Mevlana museums. The unique cuisine
of Konya was also very special for them.
Students were especially interested in the
“sema” dance performed by the whirling
dervishes and said with all honesty that
it brought about a kind of spiritual peace.
They were also careful not to take videos
or photographs during the performance.
Before returning to Tarsus students
had the chance to visit the Lystra Hatun
Palace in Meram. They were sad that the
trip was over but they said that they had
seen and learned a lot. Dean Mutlu Kader
said, “the best part of the trip was that we
had the chance to get to know students
better and see how they related to each
other.” Literature teacher Sabahattin
Özkan commented, “This has been the
most harmonious group of people I’ve
ever travelled with. This was really
quite a colorful and informative trip.”

they would have first hand
knowledge of a variety of
different universities.
Tarsus Amerikan Koleji Rehberlik ve
Psikolojik Danışma Servisi’nin her yıl
düzenlediği üniversite tanıtım gezileri bu yıl 8
– 9 Aralık tarihlerinde Ankara, 29 – 31 Mart ve
26 – 28 Nisan tarihlerinde İstanbul’da olmak
üzere 3 kez gerçekleştirildi. Bu iki kentteki
başlıca üniversiteleri ziyaret eden 10. ve 11.
sınıf öğrencileri, üniversite tercihi yapma
zamanı yaklaşmışken, bu gezilerde kendileri
deneyimleyerek bilgi ve izlenim edindi.

Orta Doğu Teknik Üniversitesi, Hacettepe
Üniversitesi Beytepe Yerleşkesi ve
Bilkent Üniversitesi ziyaret edildi.
Mart ayı sonunda düzenlenen mevsimin
ikinci gezisi de İstanbul’daki üniversiteleri
tanıma, fakülteler, bölümler ve üniversite
yaşamı hakkında bilgi alma amacı taşıyordu.
Bu geziye 11. sınıflardan 43 öğrenci katıldı.
Sırasıyla, Sabancı Üniversitesi, Marmara
Üniversitesi Hukuk Fakültesi; Yıldız Teknik,
İstanbul Teknik, Boğaziçi, Koç, İstanbul
Bilgi ve Yeditepe Üniversiteleri ziyaret edidi.
Ayrıca, Mimar Sinan Üniversitesi Güzel
Sanatlar Fakültesi’ni merak eden küçük
bir grup burayı da ziyaret ederek bilgi aldı.

The TAC College Counseling
Department organizes trips to
visit various universities in Turkey
every year. This year they organized
three such trips, one to Ankara
(December 8-9) and two to Istanbul
(March 29-31 and April 26-28).
TAC counselors Özlem Algan and
Sinan Öz, and lise dean, Mutlu
Kader, were advisors on both the
trips to Ankara and Istanbul.
The aim of the trips was to provide
students with a more in depth
insight for their professional
development and career planning.
The first trip to Ankara involved
25 students from grade 11. This
group visited the Ankara University
School of Medicine and the
Tandoğan campus, Middle East
Technical University, Hacettepe
University and the Beytepe
Campus and Bilkent University.
The second visit in March offered
students the opportunity to get to
know Istanbul universities, their

ile Begüm Gömeç (Bilgi Üniversitesi),
Doğan Güneş Ünal ve Alkın Aytaç (Sabancı
Üniversitesi) okullarıyla ilgili bilgi
vererek, TAC öğrencilerine eşlik etti.
Nisan ayı sonunda İstanbul’a düzenlenen
ikinci gezi, 10. sınıflardan 38 öğrencinin
katılımı ile gerçekleşti. Gezinin
sorumluluğunu rehberlik koordinatörümüz
ve 9-10.sınıflardan sorumlu psikolojik
danışmanımız Huriye Çiftci, müdür
yardımcımız Mutlu Kader, edebiyat
öğretmenimiz Sabahattin Özkan ve fizik
öğretmenimiz Hasan Ateş üstlendi. Gezide;
Sabancı Üniversitesi, Marmara Üniversitesi
Hukuk Fakültesi, Yıldız Teknik, İstanbul
Teknik, Boğaziçi, Koç, İstanbul Bilgi, Yeditepe
ve Galatasaray Üniversiteleri ziyaret edilerek
bilgi alındı. Kampüslerın ziyaret edilmesinin
yanı sıra yetkililerin tanıtım sunumlarının
da yapıldığı gezilerde, öğrencilerimizin
üniversite ve meslek seçimi kararlarında
bir adım daha atmaları hedeflendi. Hemen hemen her üniversitede bizleri
karşılayan, üniversiteleri hakkında detaylı
bilgi veren yakın dönem mezunlarımız
göğsümüzü kabarttı. TAC ’03 mezunlarından

students paid a visit to the Mimar Sinan
University Fine Arts School and learned
a lot about the it. TAC 2011 graduates

and learned a great deal. In addition to
touring campuses, students were able
to listen to presentations about the
school and the student body, and were
one step closer to making informed
decisions regarding their future careers.
At almost every university students were
met by TAC graduates who gave detailed
information about their respective
universities school, making the group

ile 3D laboratuvarları
kuruldu. Laboratuvarlarda
“active shutter”
gözlükler, 3D projektör
ve perde bulunuyor.

year, Tarsus American College,
one of Turkey’s oldest schools,
established 3D laboratories to
support learning in physics,
biology, chemistry and space
mathematics in particular.
Laboratories are now equipped
with active shutter glasses, 3D
projectors and screens.

teknolojisindeki gelişmeler aracılığı ile
Tarsus Amerikan Koleji öğrencileri soyut
kavramlar içeren derslerin konularının deyim
yerindeyse “içinde dolaşıyorlar”. Hücrenin
içindeki parçacıklar, DNA sarmalları,
yiyeceğin sindirim sistemindeki yolculuğu,
madde ve enerji ya da hız ve hareket konuları
üç boyutlu gösterim eşliğinde veriliyor.
Öğrencinin kitaptan okuduğu ya da
öğretmeninin anlattığı konuları zihninde
canlandırma sürecini hızlandıran bu
yöntemle, konu üç boyutuyla görsel
olarak da sunulduğundan, farklı yollarla
öğrenen öğrencilerin de konuları kolaylıkla
kavraması ve konuların daha kolay
akılda kalması sağlanıyor. Üstelik son
teknolojiyi kullanmak gençlerin derse
ilgilerini yoğunlaştıran bir etmen.
Tarsus Amerikan Koleji eğitmenleri

kendilerine soyut gelen pek çok konuyu
eğlenerek öğrendiklerini, kolay kolay
da unutmayacaklarını” belirtiyor.

Advances in three-dimensional (3D)
technology now allow students at TAC to
be ‘inside’ the subject matter of a lesson
on otherwise abstract concepts. In 3D
screening students can experience the
inside of an atom, DNA double helixes,
presentations on energy and matter,
movement and inertia and even follow
food as it passes through the digestive
system. The method allows a student to
visually experience a subject more quickly
than reading or listening to a teacher and
makes the material easier to understand
and more meaningful. Students
are more engaged in the classroom
when using the latest technology.
Tarsus American College teachers
understand that every student learns
differently and that certain methods
make learning easier. Some students
are visual learners while others are
more successful audio learners; 3D
technology at TAC offers an excellent
way to learn through seeing instead
of simply memorizing information.
Science teachers explain that students are
getting the most out of classes presented
with 3D technology. They study a wide
range of subjects. Teachers say that
students are now grasping concepts much
more quickly and that they are having fun
learning about abstract subjects, making
them that much more memorable.
Headmaster, Charles Hanna, says, “TAC
isn’t only educating students to become
leaders. From the moment a student steps
onto the campus we expect him or her
to develop creative ideas in addition to
academic success, and to realize projects
with sound planning; we make a point of
encouraging and supporting students in
these kinds of projects. It’s an approach
to learning they acquire here and one
that stays with them for the rest of their
lives and that results in success. Instead
of encouraging students to be ambitious,
shallow leaders, they develop the ability
to see all the projects before them from
different perspectives and to come up with
creative solutions. So in effect they become
natural leaders in everything they do.”

Students at TAC’s art studio have been learning how to paint
in pastels as an extension of previous instruction which
covered the fundamentals of painting. Students practiced
the corresponding techniques required to paint with pastels
by completing portraits.
TAC 9. sınıf öğrencileri görsel sanatlar dersinde su
kabaklarını süsleyerek esintili havada harika sesler
çıkaran rüzgar çanları yaptı. Okulun belirli yerlerine
asılan çanlar, onları yapanların olduğu kadar görenlerin de
gününü renklendirdi ve neşelendirdi.
Catching the Sound of Wind
Through Calabash Chimes
TAC grade 9 students painted and decorated the calabashes
in Visual Arts classes, hence turning them into wind chimes.
The beautiful calabashes decorated the TAC campus and
chimed with every breeze adding joyful sounds and color to
the TAC campus.

Tarsus Amerikan Koleji Hazırlık ve 9. sınıf öğrencileri
görsel sanatlar dersinde öğrendikleri karakalem, pastel
boya ve kolaj teknikleri ile yaptıkları resimleri sergilediler.
Öğrendikleri teknikleri başarı ile uygulayan öğrenciler
görülmeye değer çalışmalar ortaya koyarak büyük ilgi ve
beğeni topladı.

The Colorful World of TAC
Students
Tarsus American College Prep and 9th grade students
exhibited paintings made with collage, pastels and charcoal,
showing off techniques they had learned in Visual Arts
classes. Students showed mastery of the techniques in
works of art that were met with critical acclaim. It was an
exhibition of student work not to be missed.
TAC’nin Tavanlarında Öğrenci İzi
Tarsus Amerikan Koleji öğrencileri, güzel sanatlar
derslerinde okullarına yaşama yansıyan güzellikler de
kazandırıyor. Öğrenciler;,TAC kütüphanesinden sonra,
resim atölyesinin tavanlarını da resimlerle süslediler. TAC
öğrencileri daha önce üzerine resim yaptıkları plakaları
tasarladıkları resmin bütününü oluşturacak biçimde tavana
sabitledi. Böylece resim atölyesinin tavanı, öğrencilerin
elinden çıkma resimlerle süslenmiş oldu.
Student Murals on TAC Ceilings
TAC students keep surprising their peers and faculty members
with the projects they complete in their art classes. After
painting a replica from Michealangelo’s work at the Sistine
Chapel on the ceiling of TAC’s library, students created further
paintings on the ceiling of the art studio. As both rooms have
drop-down ceilings consisting of panels, to create these
finished paitings students paint parts of a picture on various
pannels which are later assembled and fixed on to the ceiling
to complete the picture.
Regardless of the technique involved, the paintings are colorful
and welcomed decorations which not only exhibit quality
student work but also greatly improve the attractiveness of
both rooms. The art students are keeping everyone at TAC now
watching the ceilings for more surprises.

Tarsus Amerikan Koleji, 25 Şubat 2012 tarihinde İzmir TAKEV İlköğretim Okulu’nda düzenlenen DI
(Destination Imagination) bölgesel turnuvasına Duygu Bulut ve Gülnur Sağlam liderliğindeki iki
takım ile katıldı.
Takımlardan Tarsusians, E kategorisinde birinci olurken, diğer
takım Jelly Beans katılımın çok olduğu C kategorisinde ikinci
oldu. Her iki takım da İstanbul’da düzenlenecek olan Türkiye
seçmelerine katılma hakkı kazandı.
C kategorisindeki Jelly Beans adlı takımda, TAC öğrencilerinden
Aylin Senem Pişkin, Onurcan Coşar, Tülin Akdoğan, Akif
Atik, Damla Buse Görür, Seray Tulay ve Efe Koldaş yer aldı. E
kategorisindeki Tarsusians adlı takımda da TAC öğrencilerinden
Tamay Biçer, Berke Canatar, İlayda Tanrıver, Oğuz Can Genç
ve Şafak Çelik yer aldı. TAC–DI öğrencileri, İzmir’de yapılan
bölgesel finallere iki takım ile katılarak başarılar elde etti. TAC
öğrencilerinin yeni hedefi küresel finallerde de derece almak.
DI Tarihçesi
Türkiye’de Destination ImagiNation (DI) programı ilk
olarak Robert Kolej’de bir kulüp olarak kuruldu. Türkiye'de
kurulmasının ardından kısa zamanda VKV Koç Lisesi, Ulus Özel
Musevi Okulları, Üsküdar Amerikan Lisesi, İzmir Amerikan
Koleji ve MEF Okulları gibi daha birçok okulun ilgi odağı haline
geldi.
DESTINATION IMAGINATION
On February 25, 2012 two teams from Tarsus American College led by Duygu Bulut and Gülnur Sağlam
participated in the DI (Destination Imagination) documentary competition held at Izmir TAKEV
Primary School.
The Tarsusians took first place in the E category and the Jelly
Beans took second place in the highly competitive C category.
As a result of their success, both TAC teams were invited to the
Turkish selections held in İstanbul.
TAC students Aylin Senem Pişkin, Onurcan Coşar, Tülin
Akdoğan, Akif Atik, Damla Buse Görür, Seray Tulay, and Efe
Koldaş made up the Jelly Bean team in category C. In category
E, TAC students Tamay Biçer, Berke Canatar, İlayda Tanrıver,
Oğuz Can Genç and Şafak Çelik were the members on team
Tarsusians. TAC students have already set their sights on
achieving success in the world finals.
The History of DI
The Destination Imagination (DI) program was first
established in Turkey in 2004 as a club at Robert College.
Soon after many other schools in Turkey, including VKV Koç
High School, Ulus Private Jewish Schools, Üsküdar American
Academy, American Collegiate Institute and MEF schools
became interested in the program. TAC is proud to now be a
member school in the DI program.

Okulu” kitabının yazarı ve eski European
School of Economics Rektörü Prof. Stefano
D’Anna, TAC’li öğrencilere önemli mesajlar
verdi. Türkçe “Merhaba” diyerek başladığı
konuşmasında, Türkiye’nin liderlik yolunda
ilerlediğini hatırlatan D’Anna; “Etik
değerlerle düşünen ve hareket eden genç
liderler aynı zamanda bir bütünselik içinde
düşünür ve davranırlarsa ülkenizi en iyi
yerlere taşıyabilir” dedi.
İnsanın, “gerçek” diye nitelediği şeyin
kendi düşünün bir yansıması olduğunu çok
satan Tanrılar Okulu isimli kitabında da
vurgulayan D’Anna, “Artık ülke değil, dünya
düşü kurmalıyız. Dünya liderini Türkiye
yetiştirebilir” diyerek TAC’li öğrencilerin
sorularını yanıtladı.
Yazarın son kitabı “Dünya için bir Düş” Ekim
2011’de ilk baskısını yaptı. Londra, Madrid,
New York, Roma, Floransa ve Milano’da
kampüsleri bulunan European School of
Economics’te 1994’ten beri yapmış olduğu
Author of “The School for Gods,” a book that
garnered much attention in Turkey, and
the former rector of the European School
of Economics, Professor Stefano D’Anna,
gave important advice to TAC students.
‘Merhaba,’ he said, starting off his speech.
D’Anna reminded everyone that Turkey was
moving forward in a leadership role and
said, “If young leaders think ethically and
act accordingly and think big, nothing but
good things will happen in this country.”
In his bestselling book “The School for Gods,”
D’Anna emphasizes that the human notion
of reality is nothing but a reflection of what
we think and goes on to say, “We should no
longer be dreaming of a particular country
but of the world. Turkey is in a position
to nurture world leaders.” D’Anna then
answered questions from TAC students.
The author’s latest book “A Dream for the
World” was first released in November
2011. On December 2, 2010, D’Anna left his
position as rector of the European School of
Economics with campuses in London, Madrid,
New York, Rome, Florence and Milan, a post
he held since 1994. He now travels the world
helping to train future leaders for the Future
Leaders for The World program.

staged “Actorz School” on
May 8 in the Tarsus Cultural
Center as part of the İlyas
Avcı High Schools Theatre
Festival. This 10th festival
took place between May 3 31, 2012.
Müjdat Gezen ve Kandemir Konduk’un yazdığı
“Artiz Mektebi” adlı oyunu, 8 Mayıs 2012 günü
Tarsus 75. Yıl Kültür Merkezi’nde sahneleyen
Türkçe Tiyatro Kulübü öğrencileri izleyenleri
büyüledi. Tarsus Belediyesi yetkilileri, Okul
Müdürü Tekin Baransel, okul idarecileri,
öğretmenleri, tiyatro şenliğini düzenleyen
yetkililer, veliler, öğrenciler ve Tarsus halkının
izlediği oyun, izleyicilerin takdirini topladı.
Sahneye çıkan öğrenciler, “yaşamın aynası”
olan tiyatro sanatı ile uğraşmanın keyfini ve
gururunu yaşarken, “yaşayarak öğrenmenin”
önemini bir kez daha vurgulayan TAC
öğretmenleri ve idarecileri başarılı
oyunlarından ötürü öğrencileri kutladı.
The TAC Turkish Drama Club actors
entertained the audience with their
talents in performing the play written
by Müjdat Gezen and Kandemir Konduk.
The audience expressed its admiration by
bursting into laughter many times during
the play and a heavy applause at the
end. Officials from Tarsus municipality,
school principal Tekin Baransel along
with other TAC school administrators,
parents, officials from the organization
committee of the theater festival, and
TAC students were among the spectators.
The student actors felt the honor and
joy of taking part in a play knowing that
drama depicts real life. TAC teachers
and administrators congratulated all
participants and reminded them about
the importance of learning by doing.

and Archeology Club
held a book launch and
presentation for their
booklet prepared on the
group’s oral history study
‘Lost Professions in Tarsus’.
The booklet serves as an
insight on Tarsus culture for
future generations.

TAC Tarih ve Arkeoloji Kulübü üyeleri,
önemli birer kültürel değer olarak Tarsus’un
kaybolmakta olan zanaatlarının son ustaları
ile sözlü tarih çalışması yaptı. Yaklaşık beş yıl
süren çalışmada Tarsus’ta nacakçılık (nacar),
köşgerlik, bakırcılık, tenekecilik, şalvarcılık,
arzuhâlcilik, kalaycılık, hallaççılık, palancılık,
yorgancılık, sekiz köşe kasketçilik, taşçılık
ve ağaç oymacılığı gibi mesleklerin, gelişen
teknoloji, seri üretim, ekonomik koşullar ve
azalan talep doğrultusunda eski önemlerini
kaybetmeye başladıklarını saptadılar. Bu

Kaybolan Meslekler” projesini bu yıl
hazırlanan bir kitapçık ile noktaladıklarını
Members of the TAC History and Archeology
Club conducted an oral history study on
the lost professions of Tarsus and the
masters of these professions, each one
representing a unique cultural heritage.
The study lasted nearly five years and
determined that certain professions such
as tinglazing, saddle making, Yemeni
shoe making, coppersmithery, octagonal
hat making, shalwar tailorship, petition
writing, tinsmithery, and decorative wood
carving have slowy begun to disappear due
to a decrease in demand, lack of available
apprentices, and new mass production
technologies. After years of research
the group put their findings on these
disappearing professions into a booklet in
order to leave behind an important cultural
record for future generations.
TAC’s history teacher and project
coordinator, Orhan Baycık, spoke about the
promotion of the booklet at the reception:
“The TAC History and Archeology Club
paints a better picture of a place where
people have lived for a very long time.” He

2007 and was coming
to an end this year
with the publication of
their booklet. Baycık
explained that in the
project, club members
first closely examined
present and past
professions in Tarsus
and determined the
ones that seemed to
be disappearing. Data
was collected during
the project before finally organizing their
experiences and impressions in a booklet
dedicated to all the masters, assistants, and
apprentices who had worked on or were
currently working in these professions.

representing the different professions who
are with us today. These masters through
their craftsmanship show today’s generation
and those of the future the richness of
Turkish culture and the culture of Tarsus.”
A reception followed in which the masters
received copies of the booklet along with
other gifts. Group photographs were
taken in front of the Stickler building to
commemorate the day. At the end of the
ceremony, guests visited an exhibition of
works by the masters of the lost professions
of Tarsus.

A Unique May 19 Holiday
Celebration at TAC
Atatürk’ün Anadolu’ya geçerek, Kurtuluş Savaşı’nın ilk
adımlarını attığı 19 Mayıs Gençlik ve Spor Bayramı her yıl olduğu
gibi bu yıl da Tarsus Amerikan Koleji’nde coşku ile kutlandı.
Tören, İngilizce Bölüm Başkanı Sheila Salim’in yaptığı açılış
konuşmasının ardından beden eğitimi öğretmeni Haluk Durusoy
ve müzik öğretmeni Aslı Son yönetimindeki okul korosu
eşliğinde öğrencilerimizin saygı duruşu ve İstiklâl Marşı’nın
okunmasıyla başladı. 19 Mayıs Gençlik ve Spor Bayramı töreni,
beden eğitimi, müzik, resim ve İngilizce bölümlerinin katkıları
ile hazırlandı.
Hazırlık sınıfı öğrencilerimizden Ege Su Durak, günün anlam
ve önemini belirten etkileyici bir konuşma yaptı. Bu güzel
konuşmanın ardından 9-C sınıfından Naz Çakar, 9-D sınıfından
Beste Uçan, 9-D sınıfından Avni Can Yağcı, Prep-C sınıfından
Senna Arman’dan oluşan salsa dans gurubunun gösterisi
ile coşkulu anlar yaşandı. Ardından ISTA grubunun tiyatro
gösterisi, İngilizce bölümü öğretmenlerinin hazırladığı slayt
Once again Tarsus American College enthusiastically celebrated
the Youth and Sports Holiday on May 19, honoring the day
Mustafa Kemal Atatürk set out for Anatolia at the beginning of
the Turkish War of Independence.
Head of the English Department, Sheila Salim, made opening
remarks at the ceremony and then students observed a moment
of silence which was followed by the National Anthem. Then
they listened to the school choir perform under the leadership
of music teacher Asli Son. TAC’s Youth and Sports Holiday
celebration on May 19 was organized by the Physical Education,
Music, Art and English Departments.
Prep student Ege Su Durak gave a moving speech that summed
up the significance and importance of the national holiday.
Following her speech, Naz Çakar (9 C), Beste Uçan (9 D), and
Avni Can Yağcı (9 D), along with Senna Arman (prep C) gave
a salsa group show which got the crowd on their feet with an
exciting performance. The English department then presented a
summary slide show of the performances made this year by the
ISTA theater group, giving the audience a chance to relive happy
memories. TAC graduate Erder Gök ’83 gave closing remarks
and after the ceremony the physical education department had a
variety of sports activities ready for everyone to enjoy.

Tarsus Amerikan Koleji’nde, 8 Mart Dünya Emekçi Kadınlar
Günü çeşitli etkinliklerle kutlandı. Sanat Bölümü Hazırlık ve 9.
sınıf öğrencilerinin yaptığı “kadın portreleri” resim sergisinde
öğrencilerin çalışmaları ile kadınların topluma katkılarının
önemini aynı çatı altında buluşturan anlamlı bir etkinlik
gerçekleştirilmiş oldu. TAC Baş Danışmanı Mr. Hanna yaptığı
kutlama konuşmasında, uluslararası emekçi kadınlar gününün,
1909’da Amerika’da bir grup kadın tarafından, kadınların
sosyal ve ekonomik hayata yaptıkları katkıları onurlandırmak
için kutlanmaya başlandığını hatırlattı ve sözlerini
“Toplumsal hayata katkıda bulunan her kadının yılda bir kez
onurlandırıldığı bu günün okulumuzda kutlanmasına vesile olan
görsel sanatlar dersi öğretmeni Tülay Okan’a, öğrencilerimize,
katılan tüm kadın öğretmen ve çalışanlarımıza teşekkür
ediyoruz. Yanınızda duran kadınlardan herbirinin sadece TAC/
SEV ailesine katkısını düşündüğünüzde bile bu günün ne kadar

International Women’s Day on March 8, was celebrated at TAC
with the opening of an art exhibition: “Portraits of Women.” The
exhibition organized by the TAC Art Department was composed
of paintings by prep and grade 9 students.
In his opening remarks, TAC Headmaster Charles Hanna
commented that the International Women’s Day was started in
the US in 1909 to honor and acknowledge women’s contribution
to society and economic life, especially in the work force.
Thanking all female faculty and staff as well as the student
body for enriching the TAC community with their invaluable
work, Mr. Hanna congratulated Tülay Okan for initiating the
celebration of International Women’s Day on the TAC campus
with this exhibition. Mr. Hanna also stated “think of the
contributions that each and every single woman in this audience
has made to our TAC/SEV community, and you will comprehend
how meaningful this day is.”

bu bayramın ifade ettiği değerleri hatırlattı. Ardından 10. sınıf
öğrencilerimiz “Ankara’da Meclis Toplanıyor” adlı gösteriyi
sahneleyerek, izleyenleri zaman yolculuğuna çıkardı.
Törene 9. sınıf öğrencilerimizin okuduğu şiirlerle devam
edildi. Ardından 10. sınıf ile hazırlık öğrencilerimizin ortaklaşa
hazırladıkları sunuda dünyada halen yoksul, eğitimsiz ve
aile ihmaline maruz kalan çocuklar bulunduğu gerçeğine
dikkat çekilerek, Kenya’daki ve Türkiye’deki eğitim sistemini
karşılaştırıldı.
Tören 11. sınıf öğrencilerimizin oluşturduğu “Echo” müzik
grubunun seslendirdiği parçalarla sona erdi. Grubun
seslendirdiği parçalara tüm izleyenler coşkuyla eşlik etti. Bu
mutlu 23 Nisan gününü öğrenciler alkışlar eşliğinde izledi.

Tören, ülkemizin özgürlük ve bağımsızlığınızın simgesi Gazi
Mustafa Kemal Atatürk ve kahraman silah arkadaşlarının
manevi huzurunda gerçekleştirilen saygı duruşu ve İstiklal
Marşı ile başladı.
11. sınıf öğrencileri Hakan Alp Sahiller ve Tülin Akdoğan,
öğrenciler adına yaptıkları Türkçe ve İngilizce konuşmada
“Atatürk’ün önderliğinde Kurtuluş Savaşı’nı ilan eden
TBMM; cumhuriyeti kurmuş, milletin kaderini değiştirmiş
ve reformlarla ülkenin istikbalini şekillendirmiştir. Böylece
demokrasinin ve ulusal egemenliğin sembolü olmuştur. 23
The ceremony was held to honor the memory of Mustafa Kemal
Atatürk, symbol of Turkey’s freedom and independence, and his
heroic fellow soldiers who fought in the War of Independence. It
began with a moment of silence and continued with the national
anthem.
Grade 11 students Hakan Alp Sahiller and Tülin Akdoğan spoke on
behalf of the student body in both Turkish and English, highlighting
the importance of the day. “Under Atatürk’s leadership the Turkish
Grand National Assembly was inaugurated, declaring a war of
independence, changing the fate of the nation, and cultural and
political reforms began to shape its future. This holiday is a symbol
of democracy and national sovereignty. In creating the National
Sovereignty and Children’s Day as a gift to our children, Atatürk
showed the importance he gave to future generations and the
amount of faith he placed in our youth.” Following the speech, grade
10 students took the audience back in time with a performance of
“The National Assembly Gathers in Ankara.”
The ceremony continued with poetry from students in grade 9.
Then grade 10 and prep students gave a presentation comparing
the educational systems in Turkey and Kenya, drawing attention
to the many children in the world who still live in poverty and lack
education or strong family ties.
The ceremony finished with songs from ECHO, a music group made
up of grade 11 students. The crowd enthusiastically sang along with
every song. It was a joyous April 23rd celebration that finished with
abundant applause.

yaşandı. 19 Mart 2012 günü düzenlenen
programı, Türk dili ve edebiyatı bölümü
hazırladı. On birinci sınıf öğrencilerinden

arkadaşları ve vatanımız için canlarını fedâ
eden tüm şehitlerimiz için yapılan saygı

“Çanakkale’m” adlı şiiri okudu. Türk dili

Çanakkale” temalı barkovizyon gösterisi

salonda hüzün ve gurur doruğa ulaştı. Onuncu

The 97th anniversary of the Battle of
Gallipoli (March 18) and the Martyrs’
Memorial Day were tastefully celebrated at
TAC. The Turkish Language and Literature
Department organized the program on
Monday, March 19, 2012. Grade 11 students
Gülşen Seçen and Umutcan Şafak presented
the program which began with a moment of
silence for the great commander, Mustafa
Kemal Atatürk, his militia and all the
martyrs who gave their lives for a nation,
and was followed by the national anthem.
Dilan Bideratan from grade 9 recited the
poem “Çanakkale”. Mehmet Âkif Ersoy’s
“The Martyrs of Çanakkale” was recited
as accompaniment to a video projection
by literature teacher Sabahattin Özkan’s
and his 10th grade student Alâra Bayda
entitled, ‘Çanakkale: From March 18, 1915
to March 18, 2012.’ The audience was
overwhelmed with emotion and pride.
The 10th grade choir recited “Atatürk‘s
Call to Youth” and “The Youth’s Reply to
Atatürk”, which the audience enjoyed.

geography teacher Nail Baran and
Turkish language and literature
teacher Sabahattin Özkan as they sang
Turkish folk songs dedicated to those
who gave their lives in the war.
Prep boarding students staged a successful
performance of a show based on the play
by Ayşe Çınar Alev entitled “Running to
Eternity” in a room decorated with posters
and signs about the Battle of Gallipoli.
The students began work on the project
well in advance under the supervision of
Turkish language and literature head of
department Gülay Damar and Turkish
language and literature teacher Önder Şit.
Students received top marks for the
drama “The Spirit of Çanakkale” in
which music, lighting, sound, and
acting were equally impressive. The
audience was profoundly moved.

On April 30, the ECHO music group organized their annual
concert, one of the important traditions at Tarsus American
College. ECHO music groups from grades 9, 10, and 11 performed
various songs from the rock genre.
Prep student ECHO members were Ali Yalçın (guitar), Ahmet
Pütün (guitar), Mehmet Akgül (drums), Sera Naz Yanık (voice)
and Deniz Karadağ (voice). Grade 9 students included Oğuzhan
Sert (voice), Edip Alp Ökten (guitar), Onat Ege Kutlutürk (bass
guitar), Fikri Berk Yüce (guitar), Fevzi Efe Seçer (guitar), and
Kerem Küçükkurt on the drums. Grade 10 ECHO group students
were Sera Yalaz (voice/keyboard), Eylül Akyürek (voice), Emin
Bilen Tümer (guitar), Berke Yılmaz (guitar), Eray Özdemir (bass
guitar), and Burak Elbeyli (drums).
Those groups performed up to four songs each, but the grade
11 ECHO group students performed seven different songs. The
grade 11 ECHO group members were Namık Kemal Aktı (voice),
Mert Can Boyar (guitar/keyboard), Onur Can Coşar (guitar), and
Can Hazar (drums).

Tarsus Amerikan Koleji 9., 10. ve 11. sınıf öğrencileri 3 Mayıs
tarihinde Oditoryum’da resital verdi. Türk müziğinden
Elvis Presley şarkılarına uzanan resital izleyenlere dünya
ezgilerini getirdi. Piyano, piyano-vokal, gitar-vokal, solo
gitar performansları, klarnet, kanun, ud eşliğinde Türk
Müziği parçaları seslendirildi. Son olarak sahneye çıkan
orkestra ve solist Avni Can Yağcı, Elvis şarkıları ve dansıyla
büyük alkış aldı. Mert Can Boyar’ın piyano çalmadaki
yeteneği kulakların pasını sildi.
World Music at TAC
Students from grades 9, 10 and 11 held a recital during May
in the TAC auditorium. Enjoying everything from Turkish
classical music to Elvis Presley hits, the audience heard
music from all around the world. There was a variety of solo
and ensemble performances such as solo piano, solo guitar,
piano and voice, as well as guitar and voice. In addition, works
from the Turkish classical music repertory were played which
featured instruments such as the clarinet, zither, and the ud.
The finale consisted of a full group presentation featuring
soloist Avni Can Yağcı.
The students especially enjoyed the Elvis Presley song, the
dance numbers and the talent shown by Mert Can Boyar on
the piano.

Haber Yok, Akıyor Zaman, Ölürüm Hasretinle,
Affet, Son Mektup, Azap gibi birçok şarkıyı
seslendiren grup ile birlikte TAC’li öğrenciler
hoşça vakit geçirdi. Tarsus Amerikan Koleji,
öğrencilerinin akademik ilerlemelerine olduğu
kadar, sosyal, sanatsal ve kültürel gelişimine
de önem veriyor. Okul bu nedenle bugüne
kadar sayısız etkinliğe imza atmış bulunuyor.

TAC students had a great time listening to
classic 84 songs such as “No News”, “Time’s
Flowing”, “I’ll Die with a Longing for You”,
“Forgiveness”, “Last Letter”, and “Grief”.
Interview with 84
Before the concert, we had the
opportunity to interview vocalist Tuna
Velibaşoğlu and Tibet Ağırtan (TAC
'83) former Mavi Sakal vocalist. Tuna
Velibaşoğlu said that 84 does not produce
music solely in the classic rock genre:
“Our songs are inspired by the richness
of world music. We use a wide range

gösterdiği başarıyı dinleyicilerin kendilerini
samimi bulmasına bağlayan Velibaşoğlu,
“Aynı parça günümüzdeki sosyal medya
ortamlarında yayınlansaydı aynı başarıyı
gösterirdi diyemiyoruz; çünkü sosyal medyada
bilgi akışı olduğu kadar da bilgi kirliliği var. Bu
da iyi müzik ile kötü müziğin ayırt edilmesinin
önüne geçiyor. Ancak iyi müzisyenlerin sosyal
medya kirliliğinden sıyrılarak kendilerini
gösterebilmeleri de sevindirici oluyor” dedi.
Ağırtan’dan albüm sürprizi
Konser öncesinde röportaj yaptığımız bir diğer
isim de efsanevi rock grubu Mavi Sakal’ın

This prevents people from discerning
the good music from the bad. Still it’s
promising to see that good musicians
can free themselves of the social media
and show people who they really are.”
Ağırtan’s surprise album
Before the concert Tibet Ağırtan from
the legendary rock band Mavi Sakal also
had a chance to sit down and interview
the band. Ağırtan said that though he
hadn’t worked on a new album in some
time he hadn’t cut his ties with music: “I
do my best to help the musicians in my
community. Most recently I gave a concert
with Şebnem Ferah sponsered by a GSM
firm. I see that listeners have forgotten
me. So I plan to release a new album
“Kıskaç” some time in March.” Ağırtan
first started playing music as a student at
Tarsus American College. As a guest artist
with 84, he received a standing ovation.

Tesema 1.09.37’lik derecesiyle rakiplerini
geride bırakarak birinciliği kazandı.
Yarı maratonun ardından beş bin kişinin
katıldığı Halk Koşusu’na, Belediye Başkanı
Burhanettin Kocamaz ile Sağlık ve Eğitim
Vakfı yöneticileri de katıldı. Halk koşusunda
TAC mezunları, TAC ve SEV öğretmenleri,
çalışanları ve TAC’li öğrenciler de koştu.
Maraton esnasında TAC ve Tarsus SEV
adına açılan stantlar da büyük ilgi gördü.
Mayor Burhanettin Kocamaz said that
every year the marathon receives more and
more interest and that he was particularly
proud of the international aspect of the
race and the way it promotes Tarsus on a
global level. Kocamaz reminded everyone
that one of the aims of the event was to
introduce Tarsus and its rich history to
the world and said: “We are happy to have
brought international athletes together
for the last eight years. The International
Tarsus Half Marathon both promoted
Tarsus and stimulates the economy in the
region. Many runners from Turkey joined
the event and 5,000 people applied for
the Fun Run. In the upcoming years we
plan to offer a full marathon in Tarsus.”
In the men’s category, Ethiopian
Gebretsadik Abraha Adihana took first
place with a time of 1.02.19 and in the
women’s category Ethiopian Atsede Baysa
Tesema took first place with a time of
1.09.37, leaving the competition far behind.
As part of the half marathon festivities,
a 5 km “Fun Run” was held to attract
other runners who welcomed the shorter
distance. A number of TAC and Tarsus
SEV teachers along with students
and employees joined in this race.
Runners were very impressed with the
refreshment stands along the course,
which were run by TAC and Tarsus SEV.

Tarsus Amerikan Koleji’nde 48. Kütüphaneler Haftası; kitap avı yarışmaları, tahmin
soruları ve çeşitli etkinliklerle kutlandı. Etkinliklere bu yıl ayrıca “ Ödüllü Kitap
Tanıtım Filmi” yarışması da eklendi.
Kutlamalar çerçevesinde kütüphane kataloğundan çıkarılan kitaplar, Toplum
Hizmetleri Komitesine katkı sağlamak amacı ile satışa sunuldu. Hazırlık sınıfı
öğrencileri de mini bir konserle kütüphane haftasını renklendirdi.
Türk Dili ve Edebiyatı Bölümü işbirliği ile hazırlanan Ödüllü Kitap Tanıtım Filmi
yarışmasında öğrencilerin okudukları Türkçe ve çeviri kitaplar için hazırladığı 1-3
dakikalık kısa tanıtım filmleri, Türk dili ve edebiyatı bölümü ve TAC Kütüphane
Komitesi üyeleri tarafından titizlikle izlenip, IB standartlarına uygun olarak
değerlendirildi. Dereceye giren öğrencilere sertifikaları ve ödülleri bayrak töreninde
verildi.
Kitap Avı yarışmasında gruplar, kütüphane kitaplarına saklanan ipuçlarını kullanarak
hazinelere ulaştılar. Öğretmenler ve öğrenciler her güne özel hazırlanan tahmin

A Colorful Celebration During Library Week

The 48th Annual Library Week was celebrated at Tarsus American College with various
activities such as a treasure hunt, creative competitions, and daily question competitions
related to library themes. This year a Book Trailer competition was added to the
celebration.
The activities offered during this week were highly enjoyed. Discarded library books were
sold for the purpose of raising funds to support the Social Services Committee. Even prep
students joined in the library celebration by giving a mini concert. As part of the treasure
hunt, groups of students followed clues hidden inside books to find the answers needed to
locate the treasure.
The Book Trailer competition was made possible with the support of the Turkish
Language and Literature Department. Students prepared short promotional films
(1-3 minutes) of books they had read either in Turkish or in translation. Their films
were then carefully evaluated by the Turkish Language and Literature Department and
members of the TAC library committee according to IB Diploma standards. Students with
passing marks were given certificates and awards at the flag ceremony.
As a special part of the Library Week Celebration, one of the world’s most famous
children’s literature authors, Eric Kimmel, met with the TAC prep students. He spoke
about his books, their characters, and where he finds inspiration.

Speed reading with comprehension
training sessions were held at Tarsus
American College for students in
grades prep, 9, and 10. A number of
teachers also took advantage of this
training. The first of these trainings
took place in March 2012. Yavuz
Önen from an Istanbul education and
counseling firm, Parantez, led the
speed reading training session with
the support of the Turkish Language
and Literature Department. By the
end of the session, students were
clearly reading more quickly and
comprehension was increased.
Burcu Canataroğlu (grade 10)
became the fastest and most effective
reader, improving her word per
minute rate from 197 words to 498
words by the end of the session.

Kütüphaneleri İLE Yola Düştü
Tarsus Amerikan Koleji Gezici Kütüphane Kulübü, her
ay yüzlerce kitabı yerleştirerek gezici kütüphaneye
çevirdikleri dolmuşla Kaleburcu Köyü'nü ziyaret ediyor.
Kaleburcu Köyü’ne ilk ziyaretlerini 17 Aralık Cumartesi
günü iki gözetmen öğretmenin eşliğinde 11 üyesi ile yapan
kulüp üyeleri, burada kitap ve okuma sevgisini paylaşıyor.
Tarsus SEV İlköğretim Okulu’nun katkıları ile güz
döneminde gerçekleşen son derece başarılı kitap
kampanyası sonucunda Gezici Kütüphane Kulübü 400’ün
üzerinde çocuk kitabı topladı.
Gezici Kütüphane Kulübü, o günden bu yana okulu her ay
ziyaret etmeye devam ederek, Tarsus Amerikan Koleji ve
köy okulu öğrencileri arasındaki ilişkileri taze tutuyor.
TAC Students Take the Library
to the Road
The TAC Traveling Library Club visits the village of
Kaleburcu in a “Bookmobile” which is a minibus packed with
hundreds of books.
On Saturday December 17, eleven Traveling Library
Club members and two supervising teachers visited the
Kaleburcu village where they shared their love of books and
reading. The Traveling Library Club had previously collected
more than 400 children’s books through an extremely
successful fall semester book drive made possible with the
participation of students from the Tarsus SEV Elementary
School.
Since then, the Traveling Library Club has visited the village
every month, maintaining strong ties between Tarsus
American College students and the village school students.

Rehberlik Servisi’nden Psikolojik Danışman Özlem Algan’ın
Boğaziçi Üniversitesi Görme Engelliler Teknoloji Merkezi
GETEM ile işbirliği içinde yürüttüğü “Görme Engelliler
için Sesli Kitap Projesi”nde, gönüllü öğrencilere öncelikle

Talking Books
This year Tarsus American College students recorded
eight new books for the audio library as part of the
Recorded Books for the Visually Impaired Project.
Guidance Counselor Özlem Algan in cooperation with
the Guidance Department at Boğaziçi University and
GETEM (Technology Center for the Visually Impaired)
collaborated on the Books Aloud Project, teaching
volunteer students the essentials of reading books aloud.
A wide variety of books were recorded. Ecem Hıdıroğlu
read Alice Kuipers’ The Worst Thing I’ve Ever Done and
Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games. Gülşen Öztosun
read Çetin Öner’s Gülibik. Ecenur Menki read İclal
Aydın’s Paper Cut-outs and Üstün Dökmen’s Butterflies
and Humans. Alara Bayda read Attila İlhan’s Fugitive
Rain. Ezgi Gül Adanır read Rowland Molony’s A Break
for Love for Shopping and After the Death of Alice Bennet.
The participating TAC students felt a real sense of
accomplishment because they had been actively involved
in adding exciting new titles to the audio library.

Tarsus American College students visited
the Hacı Süleyman Nursing Home and
Rehabilitation Center (SHÇEK) once in
November and again in January. Twenty-four
students from grades prep, 9 and 10 went on the
first visit and the number rose to thirty-three
students for the second visit.

ağırlıklı olarak hazırlık sınıflarından oluşan 24
öğrenci, ikincisine ise, 33 öğrenci katıldı.

öğrencilerin yaşlılar ve yaşlılık ile ilgili algıları değişti ve
farkındalıkları arttı. Öğrenciler, yaşlılar ile sohbet etme,
onlara kitap ya da gazete okuma ve küçük ikramlarda
bulunma fırsatı yakaladı. Merkezi ziyaret ettikten sonra
hep birlikte yemek yiyen öğrenciler, geziyi değerlendirip
izlenimlerini paylaştı.
Katılımcı öğrenciler, “yaşlılık” gerçeğini biraz daha
yakından tanıdıklarını ve devletin zor durumda olan kişilere
yaptığı yardımların önemini anladıklarını vurguladı.
After their visit to the Hacı Süleyman Nursing Home and
Rehabilitation Center, Tarsus American College students
gained new insights about old age and the elderly and as
a result became much more sensitive to the differences
between the young and old. They had the chance to sit and
chat with the residents, read newspapers and books together,
and enjoy their warm hospitality. After their visit to the
center TAC students sat for a meal together and shared their
impressions and evaluated the trip. They had the chance
to observe old age in an intimate setting and everyone
recognized the importance of mandatory state care for the
elderly.
TAC administrators and teachers were delighted and
extremely proud to see students take time off from their
weekend to volunteer for these visits. Students successfully
communicated with the elderly and exhibited sensitivity and
genuine interest during both visits which was an indication of
their maturity and sense of responsibility.
The Elderly At Tarsus American College
It wasn’t long before TAC students welcomed the elderly at
their school. During Elderly Week, nursing home residents
from Adana and Mersin visited Tarsus American College.
Students performed a concert for their guests who were
delighted. Later that afternoon, TAC students took the
opportunity to visit with the elderly and listen to their
experiences and advice.

TARSUS ESNAFINA YÖNELİK “İNGİLİZCE KURSU”
Tarsus Belediyesi ile Tarsus Amerikan Koleji tarafından organize edilen,
kentte turizmi geliştirmek amacı ile düzenlenen “İngilizce Kursu”nu başarı ile
tamamlayan 10 kursiyere sertifikaları verildi. Tarsus Amerikan Koleji tarafından
dört yıldır Tarsus esnafına verilen kursta, bu yıl da Amerikan Koleji öğretmenleri
ile öğrencileri 18 haftalık eğitim verdi.
English Language Training for Tarsus
ArtiSans
Organized by the Tarsus Municipality in collaboration with TAC, the English
language training for the tradesmen, artisans and shopkeepers of Tarsus taught
conversational English to help enhance tourism in the area. In the fourth year of the
project, ten more attendees received their certificates, after attending 18 weeks of
courses taught by TAC teachers and students.

eğitmenlerini buluşturan uluslararası Comenius Projesi’ne de destek verdi. Zihinsel
Engelliler sınıfını ziyaret eden TAC müzik öğretmeni Aslı Son, Müdür Yardımcısı
Rüştü Sakallı ve öğrenciler: Arda Yıldırım, İdil İpek Küçükkaya, Deniz Soylu,
Halide Gündeş, Ali Yalçın ve Özgür Kaderoğlu, burada yanlarında götürdükleri
enstrümanları tanıtarak bir de mini konser verdi. Comenius Projesi için İspanya
ve Estonya’dan Tarsus’a gelen öğrenme engelli öğrencilerin eğitmenleri TAC'yi

Working Together to Overcome Disabilities
As one of the school’s Social Service activities, Tarsus American College students and
teachers visited students with learning disabilities at the Mehmet Akif Elementary
School in Tarsus. Tarsus American College also hosted the Comenius Project, an
international program connecting teachers of students with learning disabilities. TAC
Music Teacher, Aslı Son, Assistant Principal Rüştü Sakallı and students Arda Yıldırım,
İdil İpek Küçükkaya, Deniz Soylu, Halide Gündeş, Ali Yalçın and Özgür Kaderoğlu
visited disabled students at the Mehmet Akif Elemenatry School to present their
respective instruments and give a short concert. As part of the Comenius Project,
Spanish and Estonian teachers of students with learning disabilities came to Tarsus
and visited TAC. The Spanish and Estonian teachers were extremely impressed with
TAC and said that they planned to implement some of the methods they had seen at the
school in their home countries.

Kulüp sorumlu öğretmeni Orhan Baycık
ve kulübe üye öğrenciler, Sinan Tanyıldız’a
kulüplerinin kuruluş öyküsünü ve yaptıkları
çalışmaları anlattı. Özellikle kulübün son
projesi Tarsus’ta Kaybolan Meslekler’i
beğenen Sinan Tanyıldız, projede emeği
geçen tüm öğrencilere ve kulüp sorumlu
öğretmeni Orhan Baycık’a teşekkür ederek,
bu çalışmaları ile Çukurova’da ve ülkemizde
kaybolan değerlerimizi kayıt altına almış
olduklarını ve böylece bu değerlerin asla
kaybolmayacağını, gelecek nesillere bir kültür
mirası olarak devredileceğini söyledi. Ayrıca
çalışmanın İngilizce olarak da yayınlanması
ile bu çalışmanın yalnızca ülkemizde değil,
dünyanın çeşitli ülkelerinde de okunacağını
ve ülkemizdeki bu değerlerin tanıtılması
açısından önemli bir rol de oynayabileceğini
sözlerine ekledi. Aynı zamanda, bu
çalışmanın bir nevi “turizm elçimiz”
olduğu, Tanyıldız tarafından vurgulandı.

History Club teacher, Orhan Baycık, and club
members spoke with Sinan Tanyıldız about
how their club was founded and the kind of
projects the club undertakes. Sinan Tanyıldız
was especially interested in the club’s latest
project, on disappearing professions in
Tarsus. He extended his thanks to all club
members and club leader Orhan Baycık for
their work on this project which deals with
Turkey’s forgotten treasures in the Çukurova
region and the country, emphasizing the fact
that these cultural riches are now officially
on record as lasting monuments for future
generations. He was also pleased that
the club’s work was published in English,
giving their work a global outreach and
helping to promote Turkey and its cultural
inheritance. Tanyıldız pointed out that the
club was a kind of cultural ambassador.
Sinan Tanyıldız said that he was ready
to support the positive projects led by
the TAC History and Archeology Club.
After congratulating the club for the
inspirational work carried out by teachers
and students alike, he expressed his hope
that such a project would not only help
the Çukurova region in Turkey but also
the entire country and remind us of our
cultural heritage and the importance of
bringing to life these new perspectives
to every member of the community.

Ağabeyim Lorrin Shepard ise, Florida’da

Ben Türkiye’deki öğretmenlik kariyerime
Whitman Shepard has been actively
involved in education in Turkey for
thirty years. He inherited his passion
for education and his love for Turkey
from his family. In the 1800s his great grandfather Fred Shepard and his great
- grandmother Fanny Shepard came to
the American Hospital in Gaziantep.
The family has lived in Turkey ever
since. His grandfather, his mother and
his father, his brother and Whitman
Shepard himself have all carried on the
tradition. As the high school Education
Coordinator of The Health and Education
Foundation, Whitman Shepard works on
a variety of projects: achieving goals the
foundation sets for American Collegiate
Institute in İzmir, Tarsus American
College and Üsküdar American Academy,
adapting new curriculum requirements
set by the Ministry of Education and
implementing both international and
domestic perspectives in the schools.
Did your father inspire you
to become a teacher?
I suppose both my mother and my father
inspired me to become a teacher. They
were both teachers. And of course we
always lived in a school environment,
either on campus or not very far from it.
Tell us a little about your family.
There are four of us altogether, two boys
and two girls. I’m the youngest. Susan is
the oldest. She’s an oncology nurse in a
hospital in America. Margaret’s an art
teacher in Miami. My older brother, Lorrin
Shepard, manages a large performing
arts center. We are a very close family.
And though we live far apart from each
other we have always stayed close. In
fact, Margaret once worked at American
Collegiate Institution, and my mother and

Alıştığım bir ortamdan kopmak önce
zor gelse de ailemin bu kurumlardaki
emeğini düşünerek bu pozisyonu
büyük bir onurla kabul ettim.
Amerika’daki özel ve devlet
okulları ile Türkiye’dekiler
arasında nasıl bir fark var?
Amerika’da merkezi bir eğitim sistemi
yok. Özel okullar istedikleri gibi eğitim
verebilirler ve kimse de onlara karışamaz.
Ancak akreditasyon almış olmaları ve eğitim
dünyasındaki itibarları hayati derecede
önemlidir. Bunları kazanmak hiç de kolay
olmaz. Kamuya ait okullar ise her eyalette
bulunan State Board of Education tarafından
idare edilir. Türkiye’ye baktığımızda bütün
okulların Milli Eğitim Bakanlığı’na bağlı
olduğu merkezi bir yapı görürsünüz.
Sizce merkezi yapının gerekçeleri neler?
Eğitim bir savunma sistemi gibi görülüyor.
Eğer eğitim gibi ülkenin geleceğini
belirleyecek bir konuyu bütünüyle serbest
bırakırsanız o zaman dışarıdan gelebilecek
bir takım güç odakları gençliği farklı
yerlere sürükleyebilir; çünkü bazıları için
eğitim amaç değil araçtır. Politika, din,
terör ya da başka amaçlar doğrultusunda
gençleri eğitebilirler. Bu yüzden devlet için
eğitim, çocukları iyi birer vatandaş olarak
yetiştirmek, bu tehlikelerden onları ve
toplumu koruma anlamı taşır. Türkiye’de
devletin eğitim alanında işini zorlaştıran
çok sayıda değişik müfredata ve programa
sahip lisenin olmasıdır. Endüstri Meslek,
İmam Hatip, Fen, Anadolu gibi farklı liseler
var. Bir de sistemde o kadar çok değişiklik
yapıldı ki, her birinin kontrolü, takibi ve
yönlendirilmesi ciddi bir iş yükü demek.
Bu açıdan Milli Eğitim Bakanlığı’nın
ve Talim Terbiye Kurulu’nun ajandası
çok yoğun. Aslında memleketin eğitim
sorunlarına baktığınız zaman bizim özel
okullar olarak yaşadıklarımız basit kaçabilir.
Eğitim sistemini eleştirenlere bazen şu
soruyu soruyorum: “Siz olsaydınız nasıl
yapardınız? Alın size kaynak, hadi çözün
bakalım sorunları.” Sorunlar o kadar kolay
çözülemiyor ancak inandığım bir şey var ki, o
da tek tip eğitimin kesinlikle doğru olmadığı.
Belki görevinizi yapabilmek için en kolay
çözümdür; ama memleketin ihtiyaçları bu
uygulamayla karşılanabilir mi? Bence hayır!

You first started teaching in Tarsus. How
did your career develop from there?
I began teaching in Turkey in 1981. I
was a math teacher at Tarsus American
College. Two years later I moved to Robert
College where I worked as a math teacher
and Athletics Director for 18 years. Then
I became head of the math department.
I took a sabbatical year to do a Masters
degree in international education at
Harvard University. Returning to Turkey
I worked as the high school director of
Robert College until 2001 and then I moved
to Üsküdar American Academy to become
headmaster.
How did it feel
to come back to

Academy?
Although it was
difficult to leave
a place I came
to know so well,
I thought about
all the hard work
my family had
given to these
institutions and I decided that it would be
an honor for me to accept the position.
What are the differences between
private and public schools in
America and the ones in Turkey?
There is no central education system in
America. Private schools can decide on
the kind of education they will give; no
one can interfere in the process. However
it’s extremely important for a school
to have the right kind of accreditation
and eminence in the world of education.
These don’t come easily. Public schools
in the Unites States are managed
by the State Board of Education. In
Turkey you have a central organization
tied to the Ministry of Education.
What do you think is the rationale
behind a central system?
Education can be perceived as a nurturing
yet protective system. If you give
something as important as education,
which defines the future of a nation, free
reign, all kinds of negative influences can
lead students in the wrong direction. For
some, education is a means and not an
end; some will try to educate children with
particular political or religious ideologies
in mind. The aim of a centralized education
is to encourage children to become model
citizens and to protect children and
society from these dangers. The Turkish
education system is also strained by the
variety of high schools, each offering its
own curriculum and programs. There
are industrial high schools, Imam Hatip
religious schools, science high schools and
Anatolian high schools. And then of course
so many changes are made to the system
every year resulting in schools being
overly burdened by checks, follow-up and
orientation. This is why the Ministry of
Education and the Education and Training
Board have very busy schedules. In fact
when you look at the education problems
this country is facing, it might seem that
the problems we face as a private school
are slight. I sometimes ask the people
who like to criticize the education system:
“What would you do to change the system?
Here are all the resources, how would you
go about tackling some of the problems?”
These are not easy problems, but if there’s
one thing I believe it’s that just one style of
education isn’t the right solution. Maybe
the easiest thing to do is to ignore outside

Eğitimdeki en büyük sorunumuz ne?
Türkiye’de eğitimde bir piramit düşünün,
en altta ilköğretim, ortada daha az sayıda
lise, en üstte de çok daha az sayıda
üniversite var. Yıkarıya doğru tırmandıkça
yarış kızışıyor. Her yıl yaklaşık bir milyon
öğrenci liseye giriyor. Bu yıl üniversite
sınavına 1,8 milyon civarında öğrenci gitti.
Bunların ancak 300 bin kadarı üniversiteye
yerleşecek. Üniversite ve liseleri çoğaltıp
herkese yer açmak çok pahalı bir yöntem.
Aslında daha çok özel okul olabilir. İmkanı
olan ya da burs alan öğrenciler bu okullara
gidebilir. Bu arada devlet de kendi sistemi
içindeki okulların eğitim kalitesini
belli bir seviyeye çıkararak kendi elini
güçlendirebilir. Böylece çocuklarımız sırf
eğitimi daha iyi olduğu için yaşadıkları
semtin dışındaki okullara gitmek zorunda
kalmaz, enerjilerini zamanlarını daha iyi
değerlendirmiş, masraflarını azaltmış olur.

Eğitim sistemimiz neden bu
kadar sık değişiyor?
Bir sıkıntı varsa değişim kötü bir şey değildir;
ama planlı değişim önemlidir ve uzun vadede
düşünülmelidir. Türkiye’de uzun vadeli
planlama yapmak çok zor. Son yıllarda lise ve
üniversite giriş sisteminde, mecburi eğitim
süreleri ve programları ile ilgili çok şey
değişti. Bu kadar hızlı değişiklikler öğrenciler
üzerine ayrıca bir yük bindirebiliyor.
Bir eğitimcinin en önemli
özelliği ne olmalıdır sizce ?
Tutku... Bu meslek için tutku gerekiyor.
Çocukların geleceği için hedef oluşturmak,
onların iyiliğine çalışmak için tutkulu
biri olmalısınız. Ayrıca öğrettiğiniz dalda
veya konuda da heyecanlı olmalı, bunu
öğrencinize yansıtmalısınız ki, öğrencinin
ilgisini çekebilesiniz. Aksi halde çocuk o
heyecanı sizde hissetmez ve dersten sıkılır.
Eğitimci olarak çocuğun hem fiziksel hem
psikolojik sağlığını gözetmek de önemlidir;
çünkü velilerimiz bize güvenerek çocuklarını
teslim ediyorlar ve çocuklar, ailelerinden çok
bizimle zaman geçiriyor. Bilgi ve birikiminiz
kadar dozunda olmak üzere şakalaşmak,
arkadaşça konuşmak da gerekli öğrencilerle.
Bir eğitmen ince bir çizgide tüm bunları
başarmalıdır. Bir de çocukların araştırmacı
yanlarını güçlendirmek çok önemli.
forces and focus on your own work, but
will this attitude help Turkey overcome
these major challenges? I don’t think so.
What is the biggest problem
facing education in Turkey?
Think of education in Turkey as a pyramid.
At the base you have elementary schools,
in the middle you have fewer high schools,
and at the top even fewer universities. The
competition gets fiercer the higher you
climb up the pyramid. Every year nearly a
million students attend high school. This
year around 1.8 million students took the
college entrance exam, but only 430,000
will eventually end up at university.
Having more and more high schools and
universities to accommodate all these
students is a very expensive approach. In
fact it would be a good idea to have more
private schools taking fee paying students
or students on scholarships. I should also
point out that the state schools would be
much better off if the Ministry maintained
all its schools at the same designated
standard. This way Turkish students
wouldn’t be compelled to attend schools
far from their residential neighborhoods.
They would make better use of time and
energy, and reduce overall expenses.
Does the education system
really change that frequently?
Change is not a problem, but changes need
to be carefully planned, thinking of longterm goals. But it’s very difficult to make
long term plans in Turkey. In the last few
years, high school and university entrance
exams, the length of mandatory education
and courses have changed significantly.
These kinds of rapid changes have placed
an additional burden on the students.
What are the most important
qualities in a teacher?
Passion. You need passion to be a good
teacher. You need to be passionate if you
want to help students achieve their future
goals, and to help them along the way.
Furthermore, you should be excited about
your area of expertise, and you should be
able to convey this enthusiasm in a way
that will inspire students. Otherwise you’ll
lose your students and they will never be
inspired to learn. It’s also important for a
teacher to be aware of students’ physical
and psychological health. Parents entrust
their children with us. They spend more

Araştırmacı olmak ve değişime
ayak uydurmak bu çağda daha da
önem azandı. Bir eğitimci olarak
bu konuda ne düşünüyorsunuz ?
Bu çok önemli bir nokta. Her şey çok hızlı
ilerliyor. Birçok bilgi kısa sürede demode
olabiliyor. Çocuklara bu hızlı değişim
sürecine nasıl uyum sağlayacaklarını, nasıl
ilerleyeceklerini öğretmek zorundayız.
Konu önemli değil, araştırma önemli. Bir
takım içinde nasıl çalışacakları önemli.
Lider olmak için ne yapmak gerekiyor?
Öğrencilerin aklında lise eğitiminden geriye
en çok bu kalır. Genel olarak bilgilerin çoğu
unutulur. Başarıyı getirecek bir düşünce
biçimini kazandırmak gerekiyor öğrencilere.
Bazı şeylere hakim olmak bu çağda çok
daha önemli. Dünya çapında ekonomi
düşünüldüğünde, genel olarak kötü durumda.
Biz gençlik zamanımızda daha aktiftik,
sanatla ve siyasetle ilgilenirdik. Artık
çocuklar bu tür konularla fazla ilgilenmiyor.
Bir şeyin peşinden koşmak lazım, araştırmak,
ideallerin olması lazım. Başarılı öğrencilere
baktığınızda aralarından müzisyen, sporcu,
ressam, yazar da çıkıyor; çünkü ders
yapmalarının yanı sıra bu çocukların başka
bir tutkusu var ve bunun peşinden koşuyor.
Bunun peşinden koşunca biliyor ki, zamanı
da en iyi şekilde kullanmak zorunda. Bu
konularla uğraşmayan çocuklar ise, çok
zamanları olduğunu düşünüyor; ama bu
zamanı nasıl kullanacaklarını pek bilmiyor.
Zamanı kullanma konusunda
okulun etkisi çok önemli değil mi ?
Teknoloji yüzünden işimiz hem kolaylaştı
hem de zorlaştı. Cep telefonları,
bilgisayarlar... Biz sosyalleşmek için sokakta
oynardık, akşam olunca eve gider, ailecek
yemek yerdik. Akşamları yüksek sesle kitap
okurduk. Çocuklar okula yorgun ve uykularını
almadan geliyor. Bu da eğitimlerini olumsuz
etkiliyor. İnternetle çok zaman geçiriyorlar ve
böyle sosyalleşiyorlar. Bir sınır olması lazım.
Elbette teknolojiyi öğretmek zorundayız;
ama aynı zamanda doğru kullanmayı da
öğrenmek gerekiyor. Eğitimciler olarak
artık görevlerimizden biri de İnternetteki
bilgileri doğru değerlendirmeyi, doğru ve
yanlış bilgiyi ayırdetmeyi öğretmek.
Bu sistem içinde velilerden
ne bekliyorsunuz ?
Veliler çocuğu çalışmaya teşvik etmeli, destek
olmalı; ama sağlıklı bir yaşamın önemini
unutmamalı; sosyalleşmenin, yaratıcı
aktivitenin önünü açmalı. Çocuğun evde
sorumluluk kazanması çok önemli. Her istediği
verilen bir çocuk sorumluluk kazanamaz.
Being inquisitive and able to adjust
to a changing world – what could be
more important? As a teacher what
are your thoughts on this topic?
It’s a very important point. Everything is
changing so quickly. A body of knowledge
becomes outdated in the twinkling of
an eye. We have to teach students how
to adjust to these rapid changes and
move forward. More than knowledge
of a particular subject, it’s important
to develop the right research skills. It’s
important to know how to work with a
team. Students need to develop leadership
skills. This is perhaps the one thing that
stays with students the most after they
leave high school. Students forget most
of what they learn. More importantly
they need to acquire a way of thinking
that will lead to success later in life.
In this age it’s more important to master
a certain set of skills. The global economy
today is in bad shape. We were more
dynamic when we were young; we were
excited about arts and politics. But kids
these days aren’t interested anymore. They
need to have ideals. They need to be chasing
after dreams, and researching topics they
are passionate about. Successful academic
students are also successful musicians,
athletes, writers, and painters. They
have passions in addition to academic
subjects. They’re actively involved in
extra-curricular activities. And they
know how to make good use of their time.
Students who aren’t involved in these kinds
of activities think they have all the time
in the world, but the reality is that they
don’t know how to put time to good use.
Isn’t it true that school helps students
become better time managers?
Advances in technology have made our
work both easier and more difficult.
Cell phones, computers… when we were
children we used to socialize on the streets
and when night fell we went home and had
dinner with our families. We read books
out loud together. Now kids come to school
tired and sleepless. This has a negative

effect on their learning. Kids spend an
inordinate amount of time on the Internet;
it’s the way they socialize. But there has to
be a limit. Of course we should teach these
kids how to effectively use technology but
we also need to teach them to be good time
managers. As teachers we are also tasked
with teaching students how to effectively
evaluate information on the Internet.
Çocuğa zamanı kullanmayı, sözüne sadık
olmayı, gününü planlamayı öğretmek
gerekiyor. Tüm bunlar bu teknolojik çağda
çok zorlaştı. Bu çağda insanların birbirine
ayıracak zamanı çok azaldı. Yaşam tarzı
değişti maalesef. Veliler, çocuklarla daha
fazla zaman geçirmeli ve bu zamanı yaratıcı
işlerde kullanmalı. Birlikte kitap okusunlar,
yürüyüşe çıksınlar... Çocuğun fiziksel
olarak da aktif olmalarını sağlasınlar. Aile
ortamı çok önemli. Çocukların uykularını
alması, kahvaltı etmesi, doğru beslenme
alışkanlığı kazanması da... Önce fiziksel ve
ruhsal sağlık geliyor, bunu unutmasınlar.

Siz yeteneğin değerlendirilmesine
ve yaratıcılığa da çok önem
veriyorsunuz değil mi ?
Başarı önemli; ama yeteneğinizi
değerlendirmeniz daha çok önemli. Biz ikiüç dilde çocukları yetiştirmeye çalışıyoruz.
Matemik, fen ve diğer dersler... Ama inanılmaz
derecede başarılı, sanatçı mezunlarımız da
oluyor. Yavaş yavaş velilerimiz de yeteneğin
önemini anlıyor. Örnek olarak, bir toplumda
ressamlar olmasa, o nasıl bir toplum olurdu
sizce ? Müziksiz bir hayat düşünebilir
misiniz ? Bugün teknoloji çağındayız
ve yaratıcılığı yavaş yavaş öldürüyoruz.
İnsanlar eskiden kitap okuyunca hayal
ederlerdi. Şimdi bilgisayarda izliyorsunuz
What do you expect from parents?
Parents should inspire their children to
work hard. They should support them in
their studies. And they mustn’t forget
the importance of maintaining a healthy
life. They should also see socializing as
a chance to open up creative activities.
It’s also very important for a child to be a
responsible member of the household. A
child who gets everything he wants never
learns the meaning of responsibility.
Children need to be taught how to use
time effectively, to manage a day full of
many different activities. They also need
to understand the importance of keeping
their word. This had become much more
difficult in our technological age. These
days we have less and less time for one
another. Unfortunately lifestyles have
changed. Parents need to spend more
time with their children and it should be
creative time. They should read books
together, go for walks. They should be
sure their children are leading active
lives. The right family atmosphere is
important. They shouldn’t forget that
physical and spiritual health comes first.
Children need to get the right amount
of sleep, have breakfast in the morning,
and develop good eating habits, too.
It seems you give a lot of
importance to talent and creativity.
Success is important but it’s important
to know your talents. We are educating
our students in two, three different
languages. Mathematics, science and all the
others… And we have graduates who are
unbelievably talented artists. Parents are
slowly beginning to learn the importance
of talent. Imagine a world without painters.
Just what kind of society would that be?
Can you imagine life without music? We
live in a technological age in which we are
slowly killing off creativity. In the past
people used to read books and imagine
entire worlds in their minds. Now they
watch the world on their computers
and there’s no need to imagine at all.
It’s difficult educating talented people;
they are lively and lose interest quickly.

gelmiş oluyorum. Benim duygularım,
evim burada. Amerika’da ne ile
karşılaşacağınızı bilirsiniz; bazı konularda
biraz sıkıcıdır; ama İstanbul’da heyecan
vardır, tarih vardır. Misafirperverlik bir
kültür olarak Türkiye’de çok güçlü. Her
yönü ile Türkiye’yi çok seviyorum.
Tarsus Amerikan Koleji,
mezunlarının birbirine
bağlılığı ile dikkat çekiyor, değil mi ?
Tarsus Amerikan Koleji gibi Talas Amerikan
Orta Okulu da birbirine çok bağlı mezunlar
yetiştiridi. Anadolu’nun ortasında küçücük
bir kasabaydı Talas. Ben hatırlıyorum. Kışları
çok soğuktu, koşullar zorluydu. O zaman
öğrenciler birbirlerini desteklemek zorunda
kalırdı. Ve hâlâ birbirlerini destekliyorlar;
o okul kapansa da, bu ruh devam ediyor.
Tarsus da küçücük bir kasaba. Tarsus
Amerikan Koleji, okul ruhunun en güçlü
olduğu kurumlardan biri diyebilirim. Eğitim
ve tercih edilişi açısından bakıldığında, o
bölgede birinci sıradaki okullar arasında
yer alıyor. TAC’yi büyütmeye çalışıyoruz.
Mardin’den Adıyaman’a, İstanbul’dan
Bursa’ya öğrencilerimiz var ve okulun
tanınırlığını artırmaya çalışıyoruz.
Yatılı okul kavramı ve geleneğine yakın
bir eğitmensiniz. Yatılı bir okulda
görev almanın farklılıkları neler ?
Yatılı okulda görevli olmanın farklı
sorumlulukları var. O öğrenci size emanet
ve bu büyük bir sorumluluk. Dersler
dışında birlikte zaman geçirmemiz ve
yatılı öğrencilerle paylaşımda bulunmanız
gerekiyor. Okullarımızın yatılı geleneğinde
derin bağlar yatıyor. Yavaş yavaş yeniden
bu geleneği de canlandırmaya çalışıyoruz.
Bazı öğretmenlerimiz ve yöneticilerimiz
de bu gelenekten geliyor. Yatılı okulların
uzun vadede orada bulunacak öğretmenlere
ihtiyacı var. Öğrencilerin yanında olmak ve,
uygun bir seviyede sıcak bir ilişki kurmak
gerekiyor. Onların eğilimleri ve yetenekleri
ile ilgilenmek, teşvik etmek gerekiyor.
Öğrenci güzel bir ortamda olduğunu bilmeli;
ama disiplinsizlik içinde olmamalı.

Amerika’da yabancı hissediyorum.
These days extremely active children are
medicated. But we should be giving just
these kinds of kids extra support. As a
society we need to support creativity.
graduates seem to stay closely
connected. Would you agree?
Tarsus American College graduates are
similar to those from Talas American
Middle School: they are very close later on
in life. Talas is a little town in the middle
of Anatolia. I can still remember it. The
winters were very cold and the conditions
were hard. Students had no choice but to
support each other back then. And they still
support one another today. I believe that
spirit would endure even if the school were
to close down. Tarsus is also a small town.
Perhaps that particular spirit in all of our
schools is strongest in Tarsus American
College. It’s one of the best schools in the
region. We are working to grow TAC. Now
we have students from Mardin, Adıyaman
Bursa, and Istanbul and we are working to
promote the school and broaden its reach.
You are familiar with the concept of a
boarding school and its traditions. What
does it mean to work at a boarding school?
There are many different responsibilities
that come with working at a boarding
school. Students are entirely in your care,
and this is a great responsibility. Alongside
classes, teachers spend time with students
and share so much of their lives with
boarders. Our boarding schools have many
traditions and result in strong connections
between teachers and students. We are
slowly bringing these traditions back to life.
Some of our teachers and administrators
come from this tradition. Boarding schools
require that teachers commit for a longer
period of time. They need to spend more
time with students and establish a close
relationship with them. Teachers need to
inspire students to uncover their talents
and interests. Finally, boarding students
mustn’t forget that although they are
living in a beautiful setting they still need
to maintain the right level of discipline.
How would you define your
relationship with Turkey?
Turkey is home for me. I feel like a
foreigner in the United States. The moment
my plane lands in the Istanbul airport I
feel like I’m back home. My heart and my
home are here. In America I usually know
what to expect and I find life there a little
boring. But Istanbul is exciting. It’s a city
full of history, and the people are warm
and extremely hospitable. But there are
so many other things I love about Turkey.

The Peer Counseling Project
was established with the
YÖRET Foundation in the
second semester of the 20092010 academic year at Tarsus
American College. In the past
two years forty-three students
received certificates. Students
in the project were assigned
positions according to their
areas of interest: academic
support, social support,
school orientation, and social
activity committees.

Oryantasyon komitesi, 2011-2012 eğitim
öğretim yılı başında yatılı öğrenci-veli
oryantasyon çalışması ile aktivitelerine
başladı. Programda görevli 11 akran
rehberlerimiz, gönüllü olarak yeni yatılı
veli ve öğrencilere okulumuzu gezdirerek
bilgilendirdiler.
Akran rehberleri; yeni yatılı
öğrencilerle kaynaşma ve tanışma
amacı ile beklentilerini ve endişelerini
paylaşmalarına yardımcı olacak
etkinliklerini içeren grup çalışması yaptılar.
Öğrenciler rehberlik derslerinde hazırlık
sınıflarını ziyaret ederek, kendilerini ve
projeyi tanıttı. Ayrıca, 09-10 ve 14 Eylül
2011 tarihlerinde psikolojik danışmanlar,
akran rehberler ile toplantı ve süpervizyon
çalışmaları yaptı.
2011-2012 öğrenim yılında, programa
katılacak öğrenciler okulumuz psikolojik
danışmanları tarafından yüz yüze
görüşmelerle ve ön eleme yapılarak seçildi.
Yapılan ön görüşmede gönüllü öğrencilere,
projeye katılma nedenleri ile katkı ve destek
sunabilecekleri konular hakkında sorular
yöneltildi; projeye katılanlardan neler
beklendiği anlatıldı. Görüşmeler sonucunda
24 öğrencinin akran rehberliği eğitimine
alınmasına karar verildi. Hazırlanan eğitim
programında, kurallar ve ilkeler, yardım
süreci, yardım etiği, ekip olma, empati, iletişim
engelleri, kişiler arası iletişimde etkin dinleme
becerileri, duyguları anlama, uygun geri
bildirimlerde bulunma, uygulama etkinlikleri
ve grup rehberliği teknikleri gibi konularda
10 hafta süren bir eğitim verildi. Sertifikanın

birlikte, akran rehberliği projesinde görevli
öğrenci sayımız 67 olacak. Akran danışmanlar
çalışmalarını ilgili sorumlu psikolojik
danışmanlarla işbirliği içinde ve süpervizyon
desteğiyle sürdürecek.
At the start of the 2011- 2012 academic
year the Orientation Committee began
its activities with orientation for
boarding students and their parents.
Eleven peer counselors assigned to
the program volunteered to tour the
campus with new boarders and their
parents and talk about the school.
Peer counselors led a group workshop
with activities to help new students
share their fears and expectations
and provide them with a chance to
get to know each other better.
In their counseling classes, students
visited prep classes and introduced
themselves and the project. In
addition, guidance counselors
held meetings on three days in
September with peer counselors and
conducted supervision workshops.
During the 2011-2012 academic year,
students who wished to join the program
had personal interviews with school
guidance counselors before going
through the first selection process. At
the initial interview, volunteer students
spoke about why they wanted to join
the program and answered questions
about participation and the different
ways of providing support to new
students; they were also told what was
expected of peer counselors. After the
interviews, 24 students were chosen to
receive peer counseling training. Over
the ten-week training course, a wide
range of topics were covered: rules and
principles, the healing process, ethical
aid, teamwork, empathy, the limitations
of communication, effective listening
skills and communication, understanding
emotion, timely feedback and application,
and group counseling techniques.
Students had to attend at least eight
of the ten sessions in order to receive
a certificate. Including the students
newly accepted this year, the program
has now trained a total of 67 students.
TAC guidance counselors continue to
cooperate with peer counseling projects,
lending support and supervision.

Parent Counseling
Do You Know How to Manage your
Emotions?
Workshops throughout the school
year were planned by TAC’s guidance
and counseling department for the
parent interaction group. These
workshops dealt with common
problems regarding parenting and
child-raising and provided answers
to some of the most frequently asked
questions by parents. The following
workshops were held: Rights and
Responsibilities (November 19),
Values (December 10), Official Family
Work (January 7), Family Conflict,
Separation and Divorce (March 10),
Depression (April 21), and Eating
Disorders (May 26). Parents of
students from every grade attended
these general information workshops.
The workshops were also aimed at
finding points of common interest
among the parents using group
techniques and open interaction.
Tarsus Amerikan Koleji’nde 2011-2012 eğitim öğretim yılı bahar döneminde sekiz
haftalık “Duygu Yönetimi Grup Çalışması” gerçekleştirildi.
Çalışmada öncelikle, hazırlık grubu sınıflarında program ve içeriği hakkında
öğrencilere bilgiler verildi. Ardından gönüllüler arasından seçilen dokuz
öğrenciyle danışma seansları başlatıldı.
Çalışma, ergenlik gibi çalkantılı bir dönemden geçen gençlerin, yaşadıkları hızlı
duygusal değişimlerle daha güçlü ve donanımlı bir şekilde baş edebilmeleri için
tasarlandı. Öğrencilerin başta iletişim olmak üzere öfke, kaygı, depresyon, düşük
benlik saygısı ve benzeri sıkıntılarla baş edebilme tekniklerini öğrendikleri
program, gencin bu tip sıkıntıları akranlarının da yaşadığını fark etmesi ve
kendisini daha yakından tanıması açısından önemliydi.
Yöntem ve Ölçümleme
Programda, Carol Langelier tarafından yazılan ve Türkçe’ye Mehmet Bilgin
ve Rezzan Çeçen tarafından çevrilen Duygu Yönetimi – Ergenler İçin BilişselDavranışsal Beceri Oluşturma programı kitabı temel alındı. Öğrencilerin bilişsel
yapılarının ne ölçüde etkilendiğini ölçmek amacı ile öğrencilere programın
başında ve sonunda “Bilişsel Esneklik Ölçeği” uygulandı.
An eight-week Emotion Management Group Workshop was held in the spring
semester of the 2011-2012 academic year at TAC.
First, prep students were given information about the program. Among student
volunteers, nine were chosen to join the workshop. After their parents were
informed, the students began to attend counseling sessions.
The workshop was designed to give students the strength and resilience to help
them manage the rapid emotional changes they experience when going through the
turbulent time of adolescence.
In the program, students learned techniques that will help them manage problems
with communication, anger, worry, depression, low self-esteem, and other emotional
worries. Additionally, they began to realize that their peers experience similar
problems and this helped them to have a better understanding of who they are.
Method and Appraisal
Carol Langelier’s Emotion Management – Developing Cognitive and Behavioral
Skills for Adolescents, translated into Turkish by Mehmet Bilgin and Rezzan Çeçen,
was used for the program. The Cognitive Flexibility Measurement was used at the
beginning and end of the program in order to measure to what extent students’
cognitive skills had changed.

Dört saatlik etkinliğe katılan çeşitli meslek
gruplarından 18 mezun, öğrencilerle
mesleklerinin gerektirdiği kişilik özellikleri,
bu mesleği yapmak için gereken eğitimler,
mesleklerinin zorlukları, avantajları,
iş olanakları ve geliri gibi konularda
deneyimlerini paylaştı. Sağlık İşletmeciliği,
Beyin ve Estetik Cerrahisi, Pilotluk,
Mekatronik Mühendisliği, Bankacılık, Film
yapımcılığı/Yönetmenlik, Reklamcılık,
İnşaat/ Gayrimenkul Yatırım gibi birçok
değişik alanda çalışan 18 Tarsus Amerikan
Koleji mezunu, kendilerini yetiştiren
okulun yeni nesil öğrencileri ile biraraya
gelmekten mutluluk duyduklarını ifade
etti. Konuşmacılar arasında 1968 yılı
mezunundan, 2004 yılı mezununa kadar
çok geniş bir mezun yelpazesi vardı.

mesleklerinde önemli noktalara gelmiş
bu kişiler, bir zamanlar sizler gibi bu
sıralarda okuyan ve üniversite tercihlerini
nasıl yapmaları gerektiği konusunda
yönlendirmeye ihtiyaç duyan öğrencilerdi.
Sizin de zamanı geldiğinde, okulunuza
gelerek öğrenci kardeşlerinize aynı
desteği göstereceğinizden eminiz. Eğer
sevdiğiniz bir işi yaparsanız, hayatta bir
gün bile çalışmazsınız aslında.” dedi.
Okul Müdürü Tekin Baransel de, “Bugün
aramızda bulunan konuklarımızın kişisel
hikayelerinden gördüğünüz gibi, bazen
mesleğinize karar verene kadar farklı
yollardan geçmeniz gerekebilir. Önemli
olan kişiliğinize uygun, sizi mutlu edecek
bir meslek seçmeniz. Bu mesleği seçerken
de ihtiyaç duyacağınız donanımları bilerek,
gerekli eğitimleri almanız. Biz Tarsus
Amerikan Koleji olarak öğrencilerimize
yollarını seçmede her türlü desteği vermek
için varız.” dedi.
Eighteen TAC alumni from various career
groups joined the four-hour Career
Day session and shared their various
experiences and ideas with students. They
discussed characteristics and education
required for certain careers, the positives
and negatives of certain professions, and
earning potentials of different careers.
The alumni represented a wide variety
of professional backgrounds such as
health administration, brain and plastic
surgery, aviation, mechatronic engineering,
banking, film production and direction,
advertising, as well as construction and
real estate investment. Graduates from the
class of ’68 to ‘04 said they were pleased
to have the opportunity to present and
discuss career aspects with the next
generation of students at their alma mater.
TAC Headmaster Charles Hanna told
students, “These alumni members present
today were once students like you. We hope
that you too will one day return to TAC
to advise future students how best to go
about career choices. Do keep in mind that
if you have a job you truly love, one that
you chose to do, the fact is that you won’t
ever do a day of ‘work’ your life. It will be a
labor of love.” TAC school principal Tekin
Baransel said, “As you can see from the
personal stories of the people gathered
here today, you may have to travel down
many different roads before you settle with
one career. The important thing is that you
choose a career that suits your personality,
one that will make you happy. You also
need to know just what set of skills and
education will be required for such a career.
At TAC we are here to support our students
in every way we can by guiding them in
the choice of the best possible career.”

“Küreselleşme” temasıyla düzenlenen
fuarda ise, Aslı Savatlı “Küreselleşme ve
Moda” konulu tasarısını sundu. Dünya
üzerinde kot pantalonun çok yüksek oranda
giyildiğini ve yöresel kıyafetlerin yerini kot
ve benzeri kıyafetlerin aldığını söyleyen
Savatlı, bunda küreselleşen modanın
büyük bir etkisi olduğunu düşünüyor.
“Dünya Kot Giyiyor” sunumunda bir
de poster çalışması yapan Savatlı'nın
sunumu, fuar katılımcılarının en çok
ilgisini çeken projelerden biri oldu.
Aslı Savatlı exhibited her project on
globalization and fashion in line with
this year’s theme on globalization. Aslı’s
poster work entitled “The World Wears
Jeans” was based on her calculation of the
frequency blue jeans are worn around the
world and the fact that they are replacing
traditional outfits due to the influence
of a globalized fashion industry. Aslı
enjoyed the attention and admiration of
the other student participants and social
science teachers who were present.

sunumları inceleyen, farklı okullardan gelen

Çocuklarımızın gelecekteki yaşam tarzından,
birlikte olacağı kişilere, toplum yaşamındaki
rolüne ve oluşturacağı çevreye kadar
pek çok şeyi etkileyen meslek seçiminin
ne denli önemli olduğunu söylemeye
gerek yok sanırım. Meslek sahibi olmak,
bir işe yaramak, -bir işten anlamaktoplumsal rol ve saygınlık edinmek bir
anlamda (atalarımızın tabiri ile) “adam
olmak” yerine kullanılır çoğu zaman.
Çocukluğumuzdan itibaren karşılaştığımız,
“Büyüyünce ne olacaksın?” sorusu bu açıdan
bakıldığında; nasıl birisi olmak istiyorsun, ne
tür uğraşların olacak, hangi toplumsal statüde
bulunacaksın, gelir durumun ve çevren
nasıl olacak gibi pek çok soruyu da içinde
barındırır aslında. Ve hemen hemen her
çocuğun aklı yettiğince ve dili döndüğünce
bu soruya kendine göre vereceği bir yanıtı
vardır. Çevresinde var olan kişilerden
ya da yazılı-görsel medyadan edindiği
bilgilerle, kimi zaman da çevresindekilerin
kendisine yakıştırmalarından dolayı,
her çocuk konuşmaya başladığı andan
itibaren bu görevle yüz yüze gelir.
Çocuklar kendi aralarında oynadıkları
oyunlarda, diğer toplumsal rolleri
denedikleri gibi, değişik mesleki rolleri de
canlandırarak dener. Bu mesleki gelişim
sürecine uzmanlar “hayal dönemi” adını
verir. Çocuk, yaşı büyüdükçe, mesleklerle
ilgili bazı gerçekleri daha farklı açılardan
incelemeye başlar. Mesleki becerilerin
ortaya konduğu çalışma ortamı, yaşanan
zorluklar, iş bulma ve kariyer olanakları,
mesleği elde etme sürecinde geçirilmesi
gereken eğitim evreleri gibi… Bu nedenledir
ki, meslek seçimi; bireyin gelişimine paralel
uzunca bir süreci kapsar (AraştırmaDeneme ve Mesleğe Yerleşme Dönemleri).
Meslek gelişiminde daha çok araştırmainceleme-bilgi edinme sürecini kapsayan
Lise eğitimi, düşünülen mesleğin
yükseköğrenimdeki eğitimine, akademik
bir altyapı oluşturmak ve hazırlık
yapmak açısından önemli bir süreçtir.
Mezuniyet arifesinde olan 12. sınıf
I believe it is not necessary to indicate
how important career choices are,
knowing that such choices determine
our children’s future lifestyles, circles
of people they will socialize with, and
their roles in society. Having a career,
being useful, gaining expertise in an area,
having a societal role and prestige, are all
part of growing into a man or a woman.
Starting from a very young age, we are
faced with questions like “What will you be
when you grow up?”, which, in fact, includes
other questions such as “What kind of a
person do you want to be?”, “What will your
interests be?” “What will your income be?”,
and “Which circles will you belong to?”.
Almost every child has an answer to this
basic question within the limits of his/
her knowledge and language capabilities.
Each child faces the task of finding an
answer to this question, using clues
from people around him/her, media, or
attributions assigned to him/her by adults.
When children play, they try out social
roles and various professions. This stage
of developing a career is referred to as the
“imagination stage” by specialists. As the
child grows older, they start to examine
professions from different angles such
as work environment where professional
skills are demonstrated, perceived
hardships, and career opportunities, as
well as the training and education process
for this career. For this reason choosing a
career is a long process that parallels the
individual's development (Research-Trial
and Establishment in Career Stages).
A high school education comprehends the
research-enquiry-knowledge acquisition
stage of career development, during which
students build a foundation and prepare
for a higher education that is needed for
their intended careers. Our seniors are at
the end of this stage. A process is at the
point of completion for them and they
are ready to sail to new beginnings.

Her başlangıç, bir sonun, her son da bir
başlangıcın eşiğidir aslında. Bugünlerde
12. sınıfta çocuğu olan velilerimizin yüreği
kıpır kıpır... Önemli bir işi tamamlamış
olmanın verdiği rahatlama duygusu ile yeni
bir geleceğe hazırlık yapmanın yarattığı
gerginliği ve belirsizliği bir arada yaşıyorlar.
Çocuğunuzu okula ilk götürdüğünüz günü
hatırlıyor musunuz? O günden, bu güne
neler yaşandı? Çocuğunuzun gelişiminde
neler değişti? Ona dönüp baktığınızda; sizin,
öğretmenlerinin, arkadaşlarının, aldığı
derslerin, katıldığı kulüplerin, etkinliklerin,
gezilerin, okuduğu kitapların, sohbet ettiği ve
etkilendiği hocaların, dinlediği konferansların
bir ürünü olduğunu görürsünüz. Başta
kendisinin olmak üzere herkesin onda emeği
var. Ve şimdi artık “O”, bir “Tarsus Amerikan
Koleji Mezunu”. Mezuniyeti sonrası onu
yepyeni bir süreç bekliyor. Çabalamasını,
denemesini ve kariyerinde ilerlemesini
gerektiren bir süreç bu… Öğrencilerimizin,
bu yolculuk için gerekli olan bilgi birikimini,
deneyimleri, ilke ve değerleri en iyi şekilde
edindiklerine inanıyoruz. Kararlılıkla yollarına
devam etmeleri için her zaman arkalarında
olacağımızı belirtiyor, girecekleri Lisans
Yerleştirme Sınavları'nda başarılar diliyoruz.
Geride kalan öğrencilerimiz için de bu
mutlu son, çok uzak değil. Zaman her
şekilde akıp gidiyor. Önemli olan onları er
ya da geç bekleyen bu yolculukta ihtiyaç
duyacakları hazırlıkları yapmalarına
hep birlikte yardımcı olabilmek; çünkü
yüreklerinin, onları götüreceği yere
ulaşabilmeleri ancak bununla mümkün.
Geleceğe dair umutları ve heyecanları
ile yürekleri kıpır kıpır olan son
sınıf öğrencilerimizi uğurlarken,
onlarla yan yana olmaktan ve bu
heyecanı onlarla paylaşmaktan dolayı
gurur ve mutluluk duyuyoruz.

In fact, every beginning is an ending and
every ending is a beginning. The hearts
of parents of seniors are fluttering
with excitement: their feelings waver
between a sense of accomplishment
and anxiety over the future.
Do you remember the first day you took
your child to school? What has happened
since then? How has your child changed?
When you look at your child you will see s/
he is the product of you, her/his teachers,
friends, the courses s/he has taken, the
books s/he has read, the trips s/he has
made, the clubs s/he has participated in,
inspiration provided by her/his teachers,
and the conferences s/he has attended.
The child is a product of everybody’s labor
including or most of all his/her own.
Now s/he is a graduate of Tarsus American
College. A new phase is awaiting him/
her. This phase requires exertion, trial
and progress in his/her career. We believe
that our students have the knowledge,
experience, principles and values that
they need for this new phase. We will
be supporting them as they diligently
continue their way and wish them all the
best for the university entrance exam.
Time always flies, thus this happy
ending is not very far away for the rest
of our students. What is crucial is to help
them to prepare for their life journey
which will start sooner or later. It is
only possible for them to be prepared
when it is time to follow their hearts.
As we bid our farewell to our seniors
who are restless with excitement and
expectations about their future, we
are happy and proud to share their
excitement and to stand with them.

TAC student, Velat Kılıç, was accepted to
Brown University with a full scholarship
amounting to $ 59,000 per year and
became the first student from TAC to
have been accepted to a prestigious
Ivy League school in recent years.
Over the years nearly forty students
have received acceptance letters from
foreign universities. This year some TAC

is no doubt that Tarsus American College
had a successful 2011 – 2012 academic
year. TAC students have decided to
continue their academic careers at schools
such as Brown University, Pennsylvania
State University, University of British
Columbia, University of Toronto and
Erasmus University in the Netherlands.

görmek üzerine birçok soruya yanıt buldu.
Panelde, eski mezunlar yurtdışındaki
üniversiteler ile Türk üniversiteleri
arasındaki farklara da değindi. Ayrıca mali
destek ve burslar, çalışma alışkanlıkları,
üniversitede sosyal hayat, uluslararası
toplulukta yaşamak, IB programının

buluşturdu. Öğrencilere üniversite
temsilcileri ve halen üniversitelerde öğrenim
gören öğrencilerle sanal ortamda tanışma
şansı veren bu web sitesi, Tarsus Amerikan
Koleji öğrencilerinin özellikle okulu nadiren
ziyaret eden birçok üniversite ile tanışması
için çok güzel bir fırsattır. Bu tür etkinlikler
ileride de düzenlenmeye devam edecektir.
TAC Yurtdışı Üniversiteler Danışmanlığı
Bölümü 2012-2013 eğitim-öğretim yılında
daha fazla üniversiteden temsilciyi TAC
öğrencileri ile buluşturacak; İstanbul’da
CIS Eğitim Günü, okul sonrası pizza
ikramlı uygulama atölyesi çalışmaları
ve yurtdışındaki üniversitelerde
öğrenim gören TAC mezunlarının
katılacağı paneller gerçekleştirecek.
The TAC Counseling office health
college awareness events organized for
students in grades 10 and 11 at providing
information about the various programs
offered at each university, what campus
life was like, and how to go about the
application process. Among others,
representatives from Guelph and Carleton
universities in Canada, Durham University
in the UK and Ohio State University
in the USA visited the TAC campus.
Students also were given the opportunity
to attend a university fair through
CollegeWeekLive, where more than 300
universities came together in a virtual
environment. The website makes it
possible for university representatives,
university students and prospective
students to meet. For TAC students in
particular, it was an excellent opportunity
to get to know a wide range of different
schools that would otherwise be difficult
to visit in person. Similar events will
continue to be organized in the future.
During the 2012 – 2013 academic
year, the TAC university counseling
department plans to introduce even
more university representatives to TAC
students; the department also plans to
organize a CIS Training day, a handson workshop with after school pizza,
and panels with TAC graduates who
have studied at universities abroad.

Okul doktorlarının biraraya gelme nedenleri
birbirleriyle deneyimlerini paylaşmanın
yanı sıra okullarınn sağlık programları
ve projeler üzerinde çalışmaktı. İki gün
süren toplantılarında okullardaki vakaların
dokümantasyonundan, revire, acil vakalardan
kriz planlarına, beslenme, madde bağımlılığı,
sigara, sağlıklı yaşam, cinsel gelişim
gibi farklı sınıf seviyelerinde verdikleri
eğitimlerde konuştukları pek çok konu vardı.
Ülkemizde henüz tam olarak yerleşmemiş
bir kavram olan okul doktorluğunun zor
yanları olduğu kadar, zevkli yanları da var.
Konuşurken yaptıkları işin ne denli önemli
olduğunu vurguluyorlar. Tümünün isteği,
ileride okul doktorluğu alanında kalıcı bir
gelişimde öncü bir rol oynama yolunda.
Okul doktorları, öğrencilerin sağlığını
korumada ileriye yönelik önemli
adımlar da atıyor. Örneğin, obezite ve
metobolik hastalıkları önlemek için genç
yaşlarda önlem alınabileceğini söyleyen
doktorlar, çocuklara sağlıklı yaşam
tarzını benimsetmek için çalışıyor. Okul
doktorları, yaptıkları işin salt bugün
için değil, ilerisi için de ne denli önemli
olduğunun farkında. Kimi zaman velilerle
iletişime geçip önerilerde bulunuyorlar,
kimi zaman da birlikte üzerine incelikle
çalışarak hazırladıkları sunumlarla
öğrencilerin karşısına çıkıyorlar. Bunlarla
birlikte, okuldaki öğrencilerin sağlığından
sorumlu çalışmaya da devam ediyorlar .
Okullarının “iyiliği, esenliği” için
pek konunun içinde bulunduklarını,
çıkan yemekten, kullanılan temizlik
malzemelerine, okul işleyişinde pek çok
işleyişin parçası olduklarını belirten
okul doktorları, zaman zaman eğitimin
parçası olarak derslerde işlenen öz bakım,
beslenme, cinsellik, hastalıklar, madde
bağımlılığı gibi farklı konuları anlatmak
için de sınıflara girdiklerini söylüyor.
The school doctors met to share
experiences and also to develop school
health programs and projects. In meetings
over two days there was much to discuss:
documentation of cases, sick lists,
emergency cases, nutrition, substance
abuse, smoking, healthy living and sex
education courses for different grades.
There are both positive and negative sides
to being a school doctor in a country where
the concept is not yet fully accepted. Over
the course of the meetings, the doctors
were able to emphasize the importance
of their work. It was everyone’s wish for
school doctors to have more of a leadership
role as the position grows and becomes
a lasting position in other schools.
School doctors are taking important steps
in protecting student health. They are
aware of the preventive measures students
can take against obesity and metabolism related complications and encourage them
to adopt a healthy lifestyle. They know
that the work they are doing today will
pay off in the future. At times they are in
close contact with parents, offering them
advice, and at times they carefully prepare
presentations on a variety of health issues
for students. They are always carefully
watching over students, making sure that
they are healthy and leading healthy lives.
School doctors know that for good health
and spirit at a school, many different
things play a role, from eating properly
at meals to good hygiene. This is why
they take the time to occasionally come
to classes to discuss important health
issues such as substance addiction, illness,
sex, nutrition and personal hygiene.

yetenekleri ve oyunun sahnelenmesindeki
danışman öğretmenler, ISTA Kulübü
öğrencilerini yaratıcılıkları ve sanata

Ann Martens’ın yazdığı ve 12 öğrencinin
rol aldığı Runaway adlı oyun, bir heceleme
yarışması ve kayıp bir ünlüyü konu alıyor.
Arthur Kaser’in yazdığı tek perdelik oyun,
“Dark Doings at the Crossroads”ta ise, Hazırlık
ve 9. sınıf öğrencileri rol aldı. Şamatalı,
neşeli bir melodram olan Dark Doings at the
Crossroads da seyircilerden büyük alkış aldı.
TAC ISTA Kulübü, her yıl bir İngilizce oyun
sahneye koyuyor. Öğrenciler, kulüp saatleri
dışında haftada iki gün okul sonrasında
kalarak provalara devam etti. Geçen yılki ISTA
kulübünün öğrencileri, seçme yapılmadan,
daha önceki performanslarına dayanarak
kulübe alındı. Bu yıl on kişilik kontenjan
için kırk iki öğrenci seçmelere katıldı.
Kulüpte toplam 21 öğrenci yer alıyor.
Tarsus American College’s International
School Theatre Association (ISTA)
is a club advised by Carole Nickle,
Ann Yancey, Emily Kramer and
Rana Karazincir. With energy and
enthusiasm, the ISTA club exposes
students to the arts and teamwork.
Students from last year’s club were
invited to join without an audition based
upon their previous performance. This
year, forty - two students auditioned to fill
ten open spots. With returning and new
students the club is composed of twenty
- one members. The auditions showed a
wonderful representation of what TAC
has to offer in the way of English theatre.
Each year one of the main events
that ISTA produces is an evening of
English theatre. In preparation for the
performance, students not only met
during their weekly club hour but also
committed to spending two days a week
after school in rehearsal. This year
the club performed two one-act plays
on the night of Thursday, March 1st. “Runaway” written by Ann Martens is
a drama about a spelling contest and a
missing celebrity. Twelve students were
members of the cast, ranging from prep
students to grade 11 IB students. “Dark
Doings at the Crossroads” written by
Arthur Kaser is a hilarious melodrama
featuring prep and grade 9 students.
The evening was attended by parents,
teachers, friends, and dormitory students.
At the end of the plays all actors were
given celebratory roses. The faculty
advisors were proud of the ISTA club
students. For the time and energy they
put into the rehearsals really showed.
Their creativity and commitment brought
the evening of English theatre to life.

On Saturday, February 18th, Tarsus American College
boarding students went to see “I’m Marrying my Wife”
staged by the Adana State Theatre Group. The comedy
by Ephraim Kishon, translated into the Turkish by
Hale Kuntay, portrays the plight of a man and a woman
who, despite losing love and respect for one another,
carry on with their marriage only to remain faithful to
their wedding vows.

Yatılı öğrencilerin yarış
heyecanı
Tarsus Amerikan Koleji yatılı öğrencileri, 11 Şubat 2012
günü Eshab -ı Kehf yolu üzerinde bulunan go-kart/yarış
arabası pistinde sürüş yaptı. Pistte heyecanlı bir sürüşün
tadını çıkartan yatılı öğrenciler doyasıya eğlendi.
Türk Dili ve Edebiyatı Öğretmeni/Yatılı Sorumlusu
Önder Şit ve etkinlik misafir öğretmeni Muhsin Bulut’un
rehberliğinde gerçekleştirilen sürüşte yarış pisti, yoğun bir
rekabete ve heyecana sahne oldu. Tarsus Amerikan Koleji
öğretmenlerinden Önder Şit’in yamaç paraşütü deneyimi
de ilgi ve merakla izlendi. Etkinliğin ikinci bölümünde ise,
katılımcı öğrenciler Eshab-ı Kehf mağarasının gizemli
derinliklerini keşfetme şansı yakaladı ve keyifli bir tarih
yolculuğuna çıktı.

On February 11, 2012, TAC dormitory students raced against
each other on the Eshab-ı Kehf go-cart track. Racing around
the track at breakneck speed, they experienced the rush of
competition.
Turkish language and literature teacher and boarding
supervisor Önder Şit and guest teacher Muhsin Bulut made the
day possible and the race track was soon the scene of intense
competition and excitement. To add the excitement, Önder Şit
went paragliding and students watched in awe as he descended
into the crowd. During the second half of the day, students went
to the Eshab-ı Kehf caves and explored the mysterious inner
chambers before setting out on an enjoyable historical tour.

öğrencileri arasında kültürler arası iletişim ve arkadaşlık
kurulmasını amaçlayan “Kültürel Değişim Günü” etkinliği
17 Şubat 2012 günü TAC'de yapıldı. Kültürel Değişim
günü etkinliklerine İncirlik’ten 20 Amerikalı öğrenci ve 3
öğretmen ile 20 TAC Hazırlık sınıfı öğrencisi katıldı.
Etkinlik, okulun eğitimle ilgili hedeflerinden biri olan
“öğrencilerin bakış açısı ve kültür zenginliğinden zevk
almalarını sağlayacak iki dilli ve çok kültürlü etkileşimlere
olanak tanımak” için düzenlendi. Açılış töreninin ardından
Amerikalı öğrencilerin hazırladığı ilk bölümde Tarsus
Amerikan öğrencileri, Amerikan futbolu oynamayı, çikolatalı
kurabiye yapmayı ve modern dans ve salon danslarını
öğrendi. Türk öğrencilerin hazırladığı bölümde ise, Amerikalı
öğrenciler, Türk kültürünün Ebru sanatı, Türk kahvesinin
yapılışı, geleneksel Türk halk dansları ve tavla oyunu gibi
geleneksel Türk öğeleri hakkında fikir sahibi oldu.
Cultural Exchange Day
On February 17, 2012, a Cultural Exchange Day was held
at Tarsus American College. The event aimed to establish
friendships and intercultural relations between TAC prep
students and American high school students studying at the
İncirlik Air Base in Adana. Twenty American students and
three teachers from the Incirlik Air Base and twenty TAC prep
students participated in a variety of activities organized for the
Cultural Exchange Day.
The day was organized with one of the school’s educational
goals in mind namely, “to provide students with the possibility
of interaction with a variety of cultures in a bilingual academic
environment that broadens their horizons and encourages
them to take delight in different cultures.” Following the
opening ceremony, the high school students taught TAC
students how to play American football, make chocolate chip
cookies and dance modern and ballroom dances. Then Turkish
students taught American students Ebru (paper marbling)
and traditional Turkish dances. They also taught them how
to make Turkish coffee and the secrets behind traditional
Turkish games like backgammon.

Gençlik Ödülleri’ni kurumsal olarak
başlatmasının hem okul hem de dernek
için büyük bir gurur olduğu belirtti.

öğrencilere İngilizce dersi vermeleri, 1.5
saat resim ve müzik çalışması yapmaları,
1.5 saat dans, bale, spor, fitnesss, tenis gibi
bir fiziksel aktivitede bulunmaları, 1.5 saat
toplum hizmeti çalışmaları yapmaları
gerekiyor. Her hafta çalışmalarını okuldaki
ödül liderlerine belgeleyen öğrencilerin
gelişimleri, Uluslararası Gençlik Ödülleri
Derneği Türkiye tarafından takip edilecek.

TAC headmaster, Charles Hanna spoke at
the ceremony: “Tarsus American College

By implementing such new programs
that emphasize key leadership qualities,
TAC will be able to provide students more
effective support in this direction.”
Twenty four TAC students applied to
the program, which requires students
to devote on a weekly basis 1.5 hours of
skills development, 1.5 hours of physical
development and 1.5 hours of community
service. The annual program ends with

which is a requirement for the
completion of the program.

Cuma gecesi saat 24:00’te Adana ve
Mersin’den gelen servislerle TAC ana kapıda
buluşan 13 öğrenci, Hasan Ateş ve Gülnur
Sağlam önderliğinde Eskişehir’e yola çıktı.
Toplam 10 saat süren yorucu bir yolculuk
sonrasında Eskişehir Osmangazi Üniversitesi
Spor Salonu yakınındaki tırmanda duvarının
önünde kamp liderleri ile buluşuldu.
Öncelikli amaç, “Bir dağcı çantasını nasıl
doldurur?” sorusuna cevap almaktı.

Başlıyoruz! Evde annelerin-babaların
hazırladıkları sırt çantaları tamamen
boşaltılır; sarmalar, salatalar, çikolatalar,
çoraplar matlara serilir... ODAK (Osmangazi
Dağcılık ve Arama Kurtarma) tarafından
tahsis edilen dağ çantaları, uyku tulumları,
matlar, ocaklar ve tencereler teslim alınarak,
dağ yolu çantası nasıl yerleştirilir, öğrenilir.
Kamp alanına yola çıkmadan son eksiklikler
için markete uğranır, kişi başı 3.5 litre
su ve ekmek alınarak yola çıkılır. ODAK,
kamp yerine varmadan 5 km önce arabayı
durdurur, çocuklar tüm ekipmanları ile kamp
alanına kadar tepe-çalı demeden yürürler...
Kimi bitkin, kimi hala enerjik; kamp alanına
varılır. Kısa bir su ve yemek molasından
sonra çadır nasıl kurulur, içi nasıl
yerleştirilir, öğrenilir. Nihayet öğle yemeği
yenir ve soluklanılır; fakat akşam kamp
ateşi yakıp yemek pişirebilmek için odun
toplanması gerek... Hava bulutlu, yağmur
peşimizde! Elimizi çabuk tutmalıyız!
It was midnight on Friday when thirteen
students led by Hasan Ateş and Gülnur
Sağlam set out for Eskişehir from the main
gate at Tarsus American College after
travelling by service buses from Adana and
Mersin. It was a tiring 10-hour bus ride
to Eskişehir Osmangazi University where
students met with camp leaders in front of
Then we were on our way. Students had to
take everything out of their backpacks,
which had been carefully prepared by
mom and dad at home, and stuffed grape
leaves, salads, chocolate and socks were
laid out on mats. ODAK (Osmangazi
Mountaineering and Search and Rescue)
supplied students with mountain
backpacks, sleeping bags and mats, stoves
and pots and taught them how to pack a
backpack.
Before heading out to the campsite there
was a final stop at the market where each
student bought 3.5 liters of water and
bread. Then ODAK dropped the students
5km from the campsite and without a
moment’s pause they made their way to
the campsite with all the gear.
Some campers were exhausted and some
were full of energy when they reached the
campsite. After a short break for food and
water they were taught how to pitch a tent
and set up inside. Then at last it was time
for dinner and we had the chance to catch
our breath. But not so fast – first we had to
collect firewood so that we could cook. But
were clouds in the sky and was rain on the
way? We had to move fast.

uykusuz, kimi deliksiz uyumus, kimi
erkenci –zımba gibi-, kimi: “Ah belim, vay
sırtım” diyerek çadırdan çıkar. Kahvaltı
yapılır ve toplanma süreci başlar. Gidiyor
muyuz? HAYIR! Sırada mıntıka temizliği…
Odun toplamak için ormanın içlerine
doğru kısa bir gezinti yapılır, uygun
ağaçlar seçilir; fakat yağmur çoktan
ağaçları ıslatmaya başlamıştır. Ve nihayet
yağmurun mola verdiği an, kamp ateşi
yakılır. Yağmur yeniden başlar; fakat nafile,
ateşimizi söndüremez... Yemekler yapılır,
sucuklar ve marshmellow’lar yağmur
altında pişirilir, yağmur altında yenir...
İlk defa bu kadar doğal bir ortamda, yağmur
yemiş toprak üzerinde, bir kamp çadırında
uyuyacaktık. Sular tükenmeye başlamış, gece
soğuk, elektrik yok.. Herkes son defa tuvalete
girip, bir daha çadırdan çıkmamak üzere
uyumaya hazırlanır. Koyunlarda el fenerleri...
Kızlar pratik; çadıra lamba yapmışlar;)
Tabi yemekler çadır içine. Dışarıda
hırsız köpekler var. Davetkar olmamalı!
Ve sonunda sabah olur. Saat sabahın
altı buçuğu, çıt yok... Saat yedi gibi kimi
1’ den 40’a kadar bir sayı tutun çocuklar, kura
çekilecek. Toplam 4 öğrenci seçilecektir.
TAC kız öğrencilerinden Berfin, erkek
öğrencilerinden Yarkın piyangoyu tutturur;
fakat kimse onları yalnız bırakmaz. TAC
el ele işe koyulur. Kamp alanı tümü ile
temizlenir ve çantalar arabalara yüklenir.
Otobüs koltukları ile kucaklaşılır,
bütünleşilir ve yolculuk başlar... Varış: Gece
11:30 – Tarsus, 00:15 - Adana ve Mersin.
Eeee.... Haydi bakalım, doğru
yataklara! Yarın okul var.
one last time before settling down for the
night with flashlights close at hand. The
girls, however, were more practical and
made tent lamps with their flashlights!
Of course all our food was kept inside the
tent: there were thieving hounds outside.
It was best not to be too inviting! And
then finally morning came. Six o’clock in
the morning and nary a sound… by seven
o’clock some campers were still fast asleep
while others were well rested and raring to
go; they were the early risers, bounding out
of their tents like springs; while the others
lumbered out as they groaned about their
aching backs. Then we had breakfast and
a meeting. We were practically on our way.
But no! We still had to clean the campsite.
We made a short trip through the forest to
gather wood, making sure we had collected
the right kind of wood. But most of it was
already damp from the rain. Finally the
rain stopped and we were able to light
the fire. The rain started up again later
but in vain – it couldn’t put out this fire!
We made dinner, roasting sausages and
marshmallows in the rain. We even ate
them in the rain…
Then forty campers drew straws to decide
which two would clean the site. TAC
students Berfin and Yarkın were chosen
but in the end no one was willing to let
them to do the job alone. All TAC students
came together to tackle the job, cleaning
the entire campsite together before
packing their bags into the cars. Then we
settled into our seats as the bus set off on
our journey home. We were back in Tarsus
by 11:30 that night and in Adana and
Mersin by 00:15.
It was our first time sleeping in the wild,
on the rain-drenched earth in a tent. We
didn’t have much water left and it was a
cold evening and there was no electricity.
Everyone went to heed the call of nature
And then, well, it was straight to bed – we
had to get up early for another day at
school!

held in June, a TAC tradition
over a hundred years old,
speakers extended their
congratulations, well wishes,
and thoughts for the future.

ülkenin kalkınmasının temeli eğitimdir.
Bizler geleceğimizin güvencesi olan
çocularımızın, gençlerimizin geleceğe
en iyi şekilde hazırlanmaları için çaba
harcıyoruz. Sizlere güveniyoruz, inanıyoruz.
Yolunuz açık ve aydınlık olsun.” dedi.
Törene katılan Mersin Milletvekili Vahap
Seçer de, gençlere: “Benim size öğüdüm
dilediğiniz gibi yaşamanızdır. Rahat olun,
inançlı olun. Hayatta savaş var, kargaşa
var, mücadele var. Bunlar, sizleri asla
endişeye düşürmesin. Sadece ülkemizde
değil, tüm dünyada çeşitler, renkler, tüm
inanç grupları, tüm etnik yapılar, tüm
halklar kardeştir. Geleceğimiz sizlersiniz
ve bizler sizlere güveniyoruz.” dedi.
Okul Müdür Tekin Baransel,
okulumuz mezunlarının bundan
sonra hızla kendi fırsatlarını, kendi
seçeneklerini yaratacaklarını, gerçek
hayatla yüzleşeceklerini söyledi.
Okul Baş Danışmanı Charles Hanna ise,
mezunlara: “Tarsus Amerikan Koleji’nden
öğrendiklerinizi, bir dünya toplumunun
sorumluluklarını bilen üyeleri olmak için
kullanmanız çok önemli. Gün geçtikçe
birbirine daha çok bağlanan bir dünyada
iletişimi ve işbirliğini artırabilmek için
kişisel, sosyal ve mesleki hayatlarınızda
‘Duvarları Yıkmaya ve Yerine Köprüler
Kurmaya’ çalışınız” öğüdünü verdikten
sonra: “Yetiştirdiğimiz pırıl pırıl gençler
için yeni bir hayat başlıyor. Mezun
olan öğrencilerimiz liderlik edebilmek
için bundan böyle daha çok çalışmak
zorunda. Liderlik başkalarından daha
çok ve uzun çalışmak, risk almak
demektir. Yolunuz açık olsun!” dedi.
Tarsus governor, Orhan Şefik Güldibi, was
the first to make remarks. He emphasized
the point that education is the best kind
of investment because it is an investment
in people. “Education is the key for a
country’s development. Our children
give us hope for the future and we must
make the effort to prepare them in the
best possible way.” Then turning to the
graduates he said, “we believe in you. You
give us hope for the future. I wish you all
the very best in your future endeavors.”
Parliamentarian Vahap Seçer also spoke
at the ceremony. To the graduates he
advised them “to live your lives the way
you want to live them. Don’t worry too
much and believe in what you do. Life
can be chaotic at times, and a struggle.
But don’t let this get you down. We live
in a world filled with people of different
backgrounds and beliefs, not just in Turkey,
but in the world, but remember that we
are all from the same family. You are our
hope for the future and we know that
you will succeed in whatever you do.”
TAC school administrators also made
remarks. Tekin Baransel, high school
principal, expressed the thought that
soon enough these TAC graduates will
find themselves in real life situations,
seizing opportunities and coming up with
their own creative solutions. Charles
Hanna, headmaster reminded graduates
that “as responsible members of the
global community, it is very important
for you to put to use everything you have
learned at TAC.” In their personal, social,
and professional lives he challenged
them to “tear down walls and build
bridges,” emphasizing collaboration and
communication in a world that day by
day is becoming more interconnected.
In making his remarks Dr. Ali Cerrahoğlu,
president of the TAC alumni association,
pointed out the need to create an ongoing
scholarship fund that will help to provide
all successful students the chance to
continue their studies in the areas in
which they have worked hardest.

kaynağı yaratmak olduğunu belirtti.

Amerikan Koleji 1975 mezunu Salim
Erdem’di. Erdem de TAC 2012 mezunlarına,
Tarsus Amerikan Koleji’nin kendisi ve
ailesi için büyük önem taşıdığını, bugün
bu noktaya gelmesinde okulunun yerinin
yadsınamaz olduğunu anlattıktan sonra,
mezun olan öğrencilere kendi gemilerinin
kaptanları olmalarını ve hayatta başarılı
olabilmek için temelde gerekli özelliklerin
bu okulda kendilerine kazandırıldığına
inandığını, bundan sonra yapılması
gerekenin de bu temeli hızla geliştirmek
ve yükseltmek olduğunu söyledi.

Orhon (TAC ’72) da mezunlara “Tarsus
Amerikan Koleji öğrencileri, yöneticileri,
öğretmenleri ve mezunlarıyla parçalanmaz

serpilerek, gelişerek, büyüyerek ayakta
kaldığı gibi, Türkiye’nin ve belki de dünyanın
bütün okulları arasında birbirlerine en
bağlı, en heyecan dolu mezun topluluğuna
sahiptir. Tarsus Amerikan Koleji'nin en
yeni mezunları olarak çıkmakta olduğunuz
yeni yolda ve ihtiyacınız olduğunda da
öz ailenizin yanı sıra büyük TAC ailesi
yanınızda olmaya devam edecektir. Yola
cesaretle çıkın ve ilerleyin.” dedi.

Yeni mezunların yuvadan ayrılışına; yeni
hayatlarına adım atışlarına tanıklık ettmek
üzere törende bir araya gelenler arasında
veliler, Sağlık ve Eğitim Vakfı’nı temsilen
yöneticiler, mütevelliler, tüm okul öğretmen
ve yöneticileri vardı. Konuşmaların ardından
okul birincisi Özge Şahan’ı tebrik ederek,
plaketi ile diplomasını verdi. CHP Mersin
Milletvekili Vahap Seçer, okul ikincisi
Velat Kılıç’ın plaketini ve diplomasını,
Tarsus Belediye Başkan Yardımcısı
Dünyamin Sönmez ise okul üçüncüsü Dila
Özbozdoğanlı’ya diploma ve plaketini verdi.

keynote speaker for the ceremony.
Speaking to the 2012 TAC graduates Erdem
emphasized the important role TAC and
the TAC family had played in his life. TAC
brought him to where he is in life today, he
said, and he will never forget that. He told
graduates that everything he learned at
TAC became the foundation of his future
success, a foundation that allowed him and
others to become leaders. He concluded
his remarks by encouraging students to
continue to build on the foundation they
received during their years in TAC.
President of the Tarsus Campus Board,
İbrahim Orhon (TAC ’72) also made made
remarks, reminding the audience that “TAC
students, administrators, teachers and
graduates together form a family, which
is why for 124 years TAC is one of the best
schools in Turkey – and perhaps the world
– with a community of graduates that is
resilient, well-connected and enthusiastic,
always growing and developing and
extending its reach. As these graduates
leave TAC and embark on their new lives,
they will need the support of family, but
they will also continue to have support
from TAC. Go boldly on your way forward.”
Following the speeches, Tarsus Governor
Orhan Şefik Güldibi, congratulated
valedictorian Özge Şahan and presented
her a plaque with her diploma. CHP
parliamentarian Vahap Seçer presented
a plaque and diploma to the second
place student, Velat Kılıç and Tarsus
assistant mayor Dünyamin Sönmez
presented a plaque and diploma to the
third place student Dila Özbozdoğanlı.
Then the final moment came to present
the certificates to the members of
the Class of 2012. This part of the
ceremony was especially enjoyed by the
parents, the faculty and administration,
representatives from the SEV Health and
Education Foundation, and relatives of
the students. The ceremony was followed
by a reception with music, ending the
special day on a most positive note.

TARSUS STREETBALL TURNUVASI
Tarsus Kaymakamlığı ile İlçe Spor Müdürlüğü tarafından
ilk kez düzenlenen Streetball Turnuvası (Sokak
basketbolu) sona erdi.
Tarsus Kaymakamı Orhan Şefik Güldibi, Tarsu Alışveriş
Merkezi bahçesinde düzenlenen turnuvanın ödül
töreninde yaptığı konuşmada; turnuvanın sponsorları
Özel Tarsus Amerikan Koleji, Medicalpark Hastanesi
ve Tarsus AVM’ye katkılarından dolayı teşekkür
ederek, gençlerin sportif çalışmalarına destek olmak,
kentte sportif etkinliklerle hareketlilik kazandırmak
ve vatandaşların ilgisini spora daha çok çekmek amacı
ile düzenlenen Streetball Turnuvası'na katılımın yoğun
olmasından dolayı mutluluk duyduğunu söyledi.
7-9 Haziran tarihleri arasında yapılan Streetball
Turnuvası’na 58 takım ve 232 sporcu katıldı.

The successful completion of the Streetball (street
basketball) Tournament, a first-time event for Tarsus
organized by the Tarsus Governorship and Tarsus Sports
Office, was celebrated at an award ceremony.
Tarsus Governor Orhan Şefik Güldibi, in his remarks
at the ceremony held in Tarsu mall’s garden, thanked
the sponsors, Tarsus American College, Medicalpark
Hospital, and Tarsu Mall for their support of the efforts
of the organizers towards making Tarsus more vibrant in
terms of sports, especially among the young population
and involving more Tarsusians in sports. He also expressed
his happiness at the large turnout for the event. Tarsus
Streetball Tournament, held between June 7-9, saw the
participation of 58 teams and 232 athletes.
Toplum Hizmetleri yıl sonu aktivitesi olarak gerçekleştirilen
etkinliğe, Tarsus Amerikan Koleji öğrencileri, öğretmenleri
ve çalışanları katıldı.
Köy okulunu boyama projesi, Mezunlar Derneğimizin
desteği ile gerçekleşti. 7 Haziran 2012 Perşembe günü
boyalar, fırçalar, merdivenlerle sabahtan yola çıkıldı.
Ustalarımız ilk önce öğrencilerimize ve öğretmenlerimize
fırça ve rulo tutma, kovadan boya alma ve duvara sürme
üzerine bazı bilgiler verdi. Daha sonra işe başlayan TAC
boya ekibi, okulun, öğretmenler odasının ve bahçede
yer alan tuvalet binasının dış duvarlarını bir gün içinde
tamamen boyadı. Son derece keyifli geçen günün ardından,
yorgun bir şekilde geri dönüldü. Bir sonraki gün, yine aynı
kafile, tekrar okula giderek, öğrencilerin karne dağıtım
törenine katıldı.
Students and Teachers Paint
Kaleburcu Village School
The year and community service activity at Kaleburcu village
was well attended by Tarsus American College students,
teachers, and staff.
The project received financial support from the TAC Alumni
Association. On Thursday morning, June 7, the group set out
with their paints, brushes, and ladders. They first received a
short tutorial from master painters on how to hold the paint
rollers and brushes, how to paint from a bucket, and how to
best apply paint to the building surface. Soon the TAC team
of painters were on task, completing by the end of the day the
teachers’ room and the exterior walls of the bathroom which
was located in the garden. At the end of this rewarding day, the
TAC students went home tired but returned to the elementary
school the next day to attend the report card distribution
ceremony.
