Bunlar birbirlerine diktir. Basic Electronics Electricity can be broken down into: • • • • Electric Charge Voltage Current Resistance Electrons • The smallest amount of electrical charge having the quality called negative polarity. • Electrons orbit the center of atoms. Protons • The proton is a basic particle with positive polarity. • Protons are located in the nucleus of atoms along with neutrons, particles which have neutral polarity. Electrically, all materials fall into 1 of 3 classifications: • Conductors • Insulators • Semi-Conductors Conductors • Have 1 valence electron • Materials in which electrons can move freely from atom to atom are called conductors. • In general all metals are good conductors. • The purpose of conductors is to allow electrical current to flow with minimum resistance. Insulators • Have 8 valence electrons • Materials in which electrons tend to stay put and do not flow easily from atom to atom are termed insulators. • Insulators are used to prevent the flow of electricity. • Insulating materials such as glass, rubber, or plastic are also called dielectrics, meaning they can store charges. • Dielectric materials are used in components like capacitors which must store electric charges. Semi-Conductors • Have 4 valence electrons • Materials which are neither conductors nor insulators • Common semi conductor materials are carbon, germanium and silicone (silisium). • Used in components like transistors Charge •Symbol: (q) •Unit: Coulomb (C) –The fundamental electric quantity is charge. –Atoms are composed of charge carrying particles: electrons and protons, and neutral particles, neutrons. –The smallest amount of charge that exists is carried by an electron and a proton. –Charge in an electron: qe = -1.602x10-19 C –Charge in a proton: qp = 1.602x10-19 C Current •Symbol: I •Unit: –Current moves through a circuit element “through variable.” Ampere – Essentially, flow of electrons in an electric circuit leads to the establishment of current. dq dt –Current is rate of flow of negatively-charged particles, called electrons, through a predetermined cross-sectional area in a conductor. o q : relatively charged electrons (C) –Like water flow. o Amp = C/sec I(t) = o Often measured in milliamps, mA Current-Water Analogy Direction of Electron Flow • The direction of electron flow in our circuit is from the negative side of the battery, through the load resistance, back to the positive side of the battery. • Inside the battery, electrons move to the negative terminal due to chemical action, maintaining the potential across the leads. Electron Flow in a Simple Circuit Electrons Current Voltage •Symbol: V •Unit: Volt – Potential difference across two terminals in a circuit “across variable.” – In order to move charge from point A to point B, work needs to be done. dw v dq – Let A be the lower potential/voltage terminal – Let B be the higher potential/voltage terminal w: energy in joules q: charge in coulombs o Then, voltage across A and B is the cost in energy required to move a unit positive charge from A to B. Voltage-Water Analogy Voltage/Current-Water Analogy Basic Electric Circuit Concepts Circuit Elements: We classify circuit elements as passive and active. Passive elements cannot generate energy. Common examples of passive elements are resistors, capacitors and inductors. We will see later than capacitors and inductors can store energy but cannot generate energy. Active elements can generate energy. Common examples of active elements are power supplies, batteries, operational amplifiers. 15 The types of sources independent and dependent. Basic Electric Circuit Concepts Circuit Elements: Ideal independent voltage source An ideal dependent voltage source is characterized as having a constant voltage across its terminals, regardless of the load connected to the terminals. The ideal voltage source can supply any amount of current. Furthermore, the ideal independent voltage source can supply any amount of power. The standard symbols of the ideal independent voltage source are shown below. + v(t) _ 16 Most often used E Sometimes used Basic Electric Circuit Concepts Circuit Elements: Ideal independent current sources An ideal independent current source is characterized as providing a constant value of current, regardless of the load. If the current source is truly ideal, it can provided any value of voltage and any amount of power. The standard symbol used for the ideal independent current source is shown below. + i(t) 1 amp V - 17 1 meg Basic Electric Circuit Concepts Circuit Elements: Dependent voltage source A dependent voltage source is characterized by depending on a voltage or current somewhere else in the circuit. The symbol For the current source is shown below. Note the diamond shape. Resistance • Opposition to the flow of current is termed resistance. • The fact that a wire can become hot from the flow of current is evidence of resistance. • Conductors have very little resistance. • Insulators have resistance. large amounts of Ohms • The practical unit of resistance is the ohm designated by the Greek letter omega: Ω • A resistor is an electronic component designed specifically to provide resistance. Wire-Water Analogy Resistor Resistor Symbols Resistor V-I Characteristic (Ohm's law) •In a typical resistor, a conducting element displays linear voltagecurrent relationship. (i.e., current through a resistor is directly proportional to the voltage across it). I V V = RI (or V = IR) (Ohm's law) Equivalently, using G as a constant of proportionality, we obtain: I = GV where R = 1/G. –R is termed as the resistance of conductor (ohm, ) –G is termed as the conductance of conductor (mho, ) Current is Directly Proportional to Voltage for a Constant Resistance OHM’s LAW Current is Inversely Proportional to Resistance for a Constant Voltage OHM’s LAW Kirchoff’s Voltage Law voltage + V2 - - •The algebraic sum of around a loop is zero. + •Assumption: + V1 I V3 –Voltage drop across each passive element is in the direction of current flow. 1 V1 V2 V3 V4 0 - V4 + Kirchoff’s Current Law I1 A I2 I3 Currents leaving a node are considered positive Trace the closed path clokcwise, assigning a positive algebraic sign to voltage drops. DC (direct current ) • Circuits that are powered by battery sources are termed direct current circuits. • This is because the battery maintains the same polarity of output voltage. The plus and minus sides remain constant. Waveform of DC Voltage Characteristics of DC • It is the flow of charges in just one direction. • The fixed polarity of the applied voltage which are characteristics of DC circuits AC • An alternating voltage source periodically alternates or reverses in polarity. • The resulting current, therefore, periodically reverses in direction. • The power outlet in your home is 60 cycle ac - meaning the voltage polarity and current direction go through 60 cycles of reversal per second. Waveform of AC Voltage Power • The unit of electrical power is the watt. • Power is how much work is done over time. • One watt of power is equal to the work done in one second by one volt moving one coulomb of charge. • Power in watts = volts x amperes Basic Quantities: Power Power is defined as the time rate of change of doing work. We express this as, dw p dt (3) We can write equation (3) as follows: dw dq p vi dq dt Power has units of watts. 9 (4) Power Formulas (Intantaneous Power) • P=VxI • P = I2 x R • P = V2 / R
