Berlin, İstanbul ve Lefkoşa’dan Hasan Aksaygın, Özgür Demirci, Didem Erk, Gabriele Garavaglia, Anna Heidenhein, Frederic Lezmi, Naomi Henning, Eleni Mouzourou, Erhan Öze, Pick Nick Projects (Panayiotis Michael, Maria Petrides, Alkis Hadjiandreou), Sümer Sayın, Şafak Çatalbaş ve Varsity of Maneuver (Birgit Auf der Lauer & Caspar Pauli) yer aldı. Bufferzone, bölünmüş şehirler ve ara bölgelere bakışı tarihsel şehir surları, egemen devletin otorite alanıdan, kişisel mülkiyetin mahremiyet alanına, günümüz metropollerindeki güvenlikli sitelerden demogafik kültürel ve sınıfsal bölünmeleri içeren, sınırların ardında kalan ‘öteki’yi nasıl tarif ettiğimizi incelemeyi amaçlayan bir projedir. www.buffer-zone.org ‘bufferzone, organized in 2013 in collaboration with Uqbar from Berlin and EMAA (European Mediterranean Art Association) from Nicosia, is an experimental workshop and a cultural collaboration project within cul- tural organizers and artists. Besides offering a mobile experience with the process, involving the dynam- ics of collective living and production, bufferzone aims to contemplate about the concepts of disunity and borders through their various layers. The participants from Berlin, Istanbul and Nicosia; Hasan Aksaygın, Özgür Demirci, Didem Erk, Gabriele Garavaglia, Anna Heidenhein, Frederic Lezmi, Naomi Henning, Eleni Mouzourou, Erhan Öze, Pick Nick Projects (Panayiotis Michael, Maria Petrides, Alkis Hadjiandreou), Sümer Sayın, Şafak Çatalbaş ve Varsity of Maneuver (Birgit Auf der Lauer & Caspar Pauli) from Berlin, İstanbul and Nicosia aims to approach the bufferzone via conflicted districts, mapping a geography, borders and control mechanisms, studying the concept with its different economic and sociological consequences. The project aims to approach the notion Buffer Zone in a broader aspect by including political, cultural transitional, divided and gentrification zones besides the conventional meaning understanding of zonal areas to separate controversial groups and nations. Accordingly the project intends to think about these issues together with the artists, researchers and sociologists. During the first workshop in Istanbul, the participants talked about their practices besides gathering to- gether/come together with historians, researchers and sociologists including Mesut Tufan, Nora Şeni and Orhan Esen, who work on issues as such polarization on urban geography, divided cities, the division on the comprehension/perception of urban public life. The second workshop was held in Nicosia and the participant artists experienced the both sides of the bufferzone with its geographical, cultural and economical impacts. The workshop participants together have developed diverse approaches to the concepts of polarization, gentrification and various manifestations of ‘border’ within the urban landscape. These approaches depict a wide panorama, from ‘the borders as a control mechanism’ to ‘the state of mind of mutual surveillance’; while drawing through the visible/in-visible walls between neighborhoods inflicted by urban transformations, revealing the micro economies and ecologies within the landscape. Bufferzone workshop, being the first of a series of workshops that focuses on divided cities and buffer zones, took place in Istanbul and Nicosia in March and April. The project aims at taking a closer look at divided cities, buffer zones, and ancient city walls, contrasting; fenced sovereign nation, gated communities / demographic cultural and social class segregations, and how we define those who reside beyond borders, “the other”. www.buffer-zone.org Geldiğim yere, Kıbrıs’a, ilişkin tanımlaması zor duygularım var. Savaş ve taksim sonrası bir jenerasyondan gelmek ve yıllarca dünya ile bağları kopartılmış bir zaman-mekanı deneyimlemek, insana burayı, yani adanın kuzeyini kastediyorum, ‘zorunlu mahrem’ bir alan olarak hissettiriyor. Active listening and conscious sleep, sleepless sleep: my motivation and method in the work “NidraZone” are based on these conceptions and experiences. The state of re-defining every kind of body and the indefinite limits of the notion of body by practising to experience the moment with the awareness of the unity of the inside and outside in temporary places, non-spaces is a quite active process. I triggered this process by doing Yoga Nidra (Sleep Yoga) in places of transience that are not regarded as “places” themselves – airport, supermarket, port i.e. buffer zones of the divided cities. My companions – persons that I guided – were sometimes volunteers, sometimes friends and sometimes passerbys, who were actually passing by the buffer zone. Yoga Nidra is a guided meditation. The person practicing this usually listens to the instructions of the guide eyes closed, in a quite and inactive condition and moves into a conscious sleep state. Instructions direct the person’s attention to the sensations in her\his body. Actually it is a state of being awake; being well aware of sensations, the ‘inside’ and the things happening in the environment, the ‘outside world’, therefore it is also described as the “sleepless sleep”. I was planning to continue the Yoga Nidra (Yogic Sleep) performances – that I started doing in ports in Istanbul - in temporary, non-spaces in Cyprus; such as airports, super markets and hotel rooms. However this kind of spatial search was not meaningful since we were temporary there; the whole of the city was an airport, an hotel room within our limited time. After the first three days, our daily crossing over the borders became as ordinary as going out for market shopping; but it was also like forgetting the orders and going back in a way that there were some days that we crossed the border between the north and south five times. Inevitably the Yoga Nidra séances became impromptu performances, during the daily rush between life-programdiscovery in the bufferzone. The day after a comparative rap-yoga séance with an immigrant from Zimbabwe, in front of the ‘No Border’ cabin; we sat in the uninhabited playground next to the UN watchtower and carried out an ‘introspection’. I started my project, called ‘ Dreamzone’, as soon as I arrived in Nicosia. My starting point was to find a common temporary space and realize a collective conscious dream with the awareness of our impermanence. Thus we easily would be able to move overfrom a deeply personalised state to a collective one. What I wonder was; what kind of difference it could create in our lives to wake into the politics of daily life from the guidance of the ‘volatile as a dream’, ‘vague as the subconscious’ and ‘absolute as the silence’? A conscious sleep could be a good start to prepare the conditions for an active non-action: Conscious sleep; to be totally awake as one can be… If the difference between the public and the private is only a construction that functions to support the dominant status quo, then does this mean that even our most personal acts are the embodiment of the dominant ideologies’ narration? Thus, there is a script that we ‘play’ or as a cliché way to put it ‘life is a play where everybody plays his or her role in it?’… These questions can be followed by ‘is this my role?’ or ‘who did decide on my role?’ and ‘Who is the script writer?’; we may loose our track and finally have a rest realizing that the ‘who’ questions does not generate any answers. Even if we do not get any answers, asking the questions gives an experience – or creates a course of existence. Paradoxically asking the question tells us who we are; given one is willing to listen to it. Being ready to listen is a good start if not sufficient enough; as long as listening is a passive action we cannot acquire the knowledge of who we are – the way we listen determines everything. Everything seems fine till here. Now, for the first time and again; we come back to where we start – to active listening – by paying attention to the way we talk and the way we use the words. Active listening, conscious sleep, sleepless sleep… Aktif dinleme, bilinçli uyku, uykusuz uyku… Yoga Means Union, video, 15’39”, Sketching the Bufferzone sergisinden L’espace, 2013, yerleştirme, Kontrol Noktası sergisi, DEPO L’espace, 2013, installation, Check Point exhibition, DEPO En l’espace d’une minute, Video, 39”, 2013. Casual moments crossing significant moments of Cyprus’s history turn to performative actions as well as everyday routines staging the gaps of memory with leaks of time and space: filling the gaps with film scenes and dialogs both fiction and documentary - to find another zone to occupy in order to meet that notion of “one’s own time”. … İlk başta kuzey tarafında 10’a yakın kahve çekimi yaptım. Aynen.. Özgür Demirci ile Selda Asal söyleşisinden. At first in the northern region I filmed about 10 coffee shops close-up. Most of these were on villages on Nicosia borderlines. Following this borderline we went to Güzelyurt – Lefke meaning up to Lefke just at the end of the border. In total I shot 10 coffee shops in the north... The interesting part is that in both of the regions the acts in the coffee shops are the same... Taking the chairs outside, people sitting and watching, looking at each other, long and static hours of inactivity... I thought on this idea of static time and the basic starting point of the idea was this act of watching each other. Weren’t they talkind a lot while watchinf each other? Silence and immobility... Actually they are watching each other and the state of watching is like this: these are people who watch what is happening in the coffee shops, those who pass by the shop, what unfolds around them... However my starting point is the act of watching in between these two countries, the two sides of the island... After 1974 campaign (after time when the actual physical separation was realized) Greek military bases, observation posts were built just opposite Turkish military sites, bases, observations posts. This state of watching each other is a state that already exists politically for a long time. With the beginning of reciprocal access in the year of 2003, this act of watching increased even more between these two populations. The coffee shops in the south and the coffee shops in the north, meaning in the video that I made there is no interaction, without intervening their daily rituals, just standing across them, I shoot 5-10 minute footages. In fact you constructed something about exposing the spectator in the bufferzone while revaling this confussion... Exactly... Meaning that you are in the position of the spectator and the listener? In fact, I am a kind of a spectator or a “peeper” maybe. But do they observe you as well? They are peeping on me as well where the camera is the point that I want to create. Their interaction with the camera or me will be their interaction with my installation and each other. The space I have created in between in some kind of a buffer zone... Actually some kind of a mirror effect ... Kind of... When the people, or as a matter of fact spectators, come to see the installation they will be left in a buffer zone and watch both sides... And they will see the interaction in between... May be this is a purely coincidental interaction... I mean maybe there will be a definite interaction in the editing of the videos that I make but I do not want to drift away from the naturalness of the acts in this process. From Özgür Demirci in conversation with Selda Asal. image will be cahnged Sırkıran Gürgenç Korkmazel’in öykülerini topladığı, Yapı Kredi Yayınları’ndan çıktı. Didem Erk The stories and the narrations are some of the unique tools that can illustrate the essence of borders for someone beyond. It is a project that aims to face the city by a performative approach, which involves walking around and reading the book aloud in both the southern and the northern parts of Nicosia and. I’ve walked across the two parts of the city while reading the book aloud. It can be regarded as a travelling reader, a wandering narrator. Walking on the line, which functioned as a border in a specific part of the history and currently referred as the border as well as the routes that connect them, is one of the most accurate acts to get to know and discover a city. The chewing the pages of the book after I read is a way of tracking and leaving a trace; eating the memories and drawing a route. The route is drawn in three languages; I wish I had a trace in the archives (Sırkıran | Secret Decipherer | Mistiko Spastis) A story only exists in the time that it happens and it is observed, everything written and told afterwards is like a performative archiving, it has been bent and distorted, written and erased again, thus growing already different. Sırkıran’ is a compilation of short stories of Gürgenç Korkmazel, published by Yapı Kredi. It is a storybook, which is nourished with a poetic language. The book is composed of stories about social, cultural and politic history and the circumstances specific to Cyprus, which are written in a melancholic and ironic tone. In order to understand some of the sentences one may even have to look up in a Cypriot Turkish dictionary. My impression is that they are poetic stories regarding the island, with either autobiographic or traumatic fictions. My choice of this book was a coincidence. I came across this book in İşık Bookstore, which has an historical importance for Nicosia and which has been faced with a danger of arson due to its leftist tendency, in 2009. Firstly the name of the book caught my attention because it offered a non-existing word made out of the existing ones. On the other side, the deeds, such as keeping a secret, denial, acknowledgement, being watched and grieving in besieged areas that are beyond the visible, left an impact on me. Loss of memory and it is relationship with the language and geography are the matters that I usually deal in my works. This book had a connection to the memory of Cyprus through a subjective channel: individual history. Besides the official history and documents, individual history can delve into many interesting things. Nicosia, once a city surrounded by a circular city wall, is now composed of two semicircles. It is structure, rendered with the notions of enclosing or leaving out of the city walls or invisible walls, always indicates the borders. Realizing the performance in both North and South and performing in the zones, where photography and video recording is forbidden, enabled me to grasp both sides’ approaches to the border and socio-political clues about the living quarters parallel to the border line. It was only natural for the children playing football in the blind alleys, common behind the walls, to use the walls as their goal post. We had long conversations with Erhan and his mother, who have long lived in the place and directly effected by the narratives, about how the projects would evolve and the inner dynamics of Cyprus. Erhan lead me to make the necessary connections and the right journey because traumatic experiences, testimonials and the transferring of these throughout the generations as well as the disinformation in this process were important for me. What I needed mostly in course of the project were people who knew the island beforehand and who had cumulated memories about it. In the meantime our correspondence with Özgür was very influential in means of a regarding Cyprus in a correct way and adapting the projects to the specific conditions. We had the opportunity to make the right encounters and comparisons. During our first journeys to the north and south parts of the island, and even when I was working for his project he helped me to shape my project and to focus. One’s action might have a mental correspondence in the other and we needed to be quick since our time was short. The state of polarity or being in between always stand out in the works that I produced and in their installation. Places stuck in a period of time, state of confinement, looting and the fondness of parakeets lead me to different kind of readings since I came back from Cyprus. Two steel wired windows of a house, one is open and the other one is closed, across these is the iron fenced window of the exhibition space…Perhaps this would not say anything before seeing Cyprus. Didem Erk The Book of Silent Questions About the Bufferzone Gabriele Garavaglia & Sümer Sayın 2013 Sümer Sayın: Apartman projesiyle yaptığım Bufferzone workshop’unda İstanbul’da bir workshop vardı. ‘Birleşmiş Milletler askerleri bufferzone’a ev mi diyorlar?’ Sümer Sayın: In the Bufferzone project that I participated, firstly there was a workshop in Istanbul. We started to think about the city and borders there. During the part in Cyprus, some questions came to our mind while we were walking across the borders with Gabriele. In the beginning we took some notes of these questions. Then we thought if we could make a book out of them. We could also include some drawings, which illustrated these questions. After we made the drawings we decided that the drawings themselves can directly signify the questions and we do not have to include the questions written in the book. Then we produced the book titled ‘The Book of Silent Questions’ which actually contains the drawings belonging to the questions. Gökçe Süvari: Can you elaborate the questions a bit? Sümer Sayın: Yes. If I go through our notes here. Our questions were the simple ones. But they were the basic questions that anyone can think of. For example; ‘Why does the Bufferzone still exist?’, ‘Why does the United Nations divide the nations?’, ‘Who plays football in the bufferzone?’-regarding the football playground we saw in the bufferzone-, ‘Can people attack each other from the checkpoints?’, ‘Why do the soldiers look as if they are prisoners?’, ‘Do the UN soldiers call the bufferzone home?’, ‘Why did Peter Young chose the colour green?’, ‘Do the people in bufferzone live in peace?’, ‘If a UN soldier has a child would he/she also became a UN soldier ?’, ‘If there are fights in bufferzone should be there another bufferzone?’ So they were a bit funny questions actually. ‘Are there any chances of bufferzone to become permanent?’, Sümer Sayın: Finally it was not just about illustrating the questions but we also made drawings. Because somehow, it surpassed the questions. Gabriele Garavaglia: Yes. I mean we started with the questions but in the end the questions were just a starting point. Sümer Sayın: But afterwards the drawings became the actual point. So we started to do just do the drawings. Gabriele Garavaglia: And for the book we also had to make a selection of the drawings we did. Sümer Sayın: Yes we didn’t put everything we did. We eliminated some of them and we also had to decide how to organize them. Selda Asal: But before coming to Cyprus, did you have an idea already to what to do or did you just leave it to the circumstances? How was it developed by your side? Gabriele Garavaglia: I had some ideas that changed. I mean when I was in Cyrus I choosed to follow something that of experience that I wasn’t coming from. Actually it also came to me when I was doing the work with the photographer, the one we projected in the exhibition, about the wall. Selda Asal: Sorry I didn’t get it. Gabriele Garavaglia: It was about physical limits that how can this be turned into something that is not a limit or exactly opposite. And about the book that it was inspired by what we had in Cyprus elda Asal: I would like to ask more about your video work in the exhibition. How was it developed? Gabriele Garavaglia: I mean when I was thinking about the limit of the bufferzone - I mean it is a wall that is kind of fragile system on the culture and city - I was thinking of using it this kind of iconic limit in another way. When I got back I decided to develop this video and I decided to involve a photography artist and I wanted to share my experience in Cyprus and how anyone can react to this. So the idea was to share it with another artist to develop the installation here. Of course the idea was to use a Parkour artist to show his idea of the wall not as a limit but as a tool. And actually by chance I found this piece of Berlin Wall with this big piece of a Cyprus wall; perfect scenario for doing this performance. In video there was Berlin wall and the Cyprus wall and everything was fitted together. And there was this action in wall and the instruction of how to jump in the wall. And with this guy, who is a parkour guy and with him we developed a faster and pragmatic way to jump through the wall. Then we decided to do it like just on the website and decided to show it just as a GIF, which is shared on the blogs and web. That’s it more or less. Gökçe Süvari: Did you use this image afterwards? Gabriele Garavaglia: Yes. We thought that it is a contemporary way to show a video. It is functional because it takes just to send a link and it was like fitting the situation. Gökçe Süvari: What I meant was did you spread the GIF image? Via social sharing sites? Gabriele Garavaglia: Yes. I mean we did not but at some point we checked it out and we saw that someone was posting the image. I didn’t check afterwards so lost the track a bit but at some point it became viral. Gökçe Süvari: So it became anonymous. Gabriele Garavaglia: Yes, exactly. And this was the idea for using a GIF. ‘The Insider’s Out’ Köpük üzerine macun ve akrilik / Putty and acrylic on foam 2013 Sümer Sayın http://www.2wallsjumptutorial.eu/nicosia/berlin/ Gabriele Garavaglia & Federico Carpani Bufferzone Panoramics, in collaboration with Erhan Öze, ile birlikte For the Bufferzone project Anna Heidenhain and Frederic Lezmi worked in collaboration and produced a book called “In the beginning”. Lezmi’s photographs document the actual situation on the ground on both sides of the city while Heidenhain has created collages from found material from both, Greek and Turkish publications. What came out is a collaborative work in the form of a two sided artist book. Two books bound into each other with Frederic Lezmi’s photographs on the left and Anna Heidenhain’s collages on the right. With this folding technique the reader explores the contradictions and overlapping complexity of the conflict in new combinations from different angles. The process reflects the multiple sides of the buffer zone and the torn history of the Island of Cyprus. “In the beginning“ has been produced in a small edition of 25 handmade copies. Anna Heidenhain: The very beginning was that I thought of Cyprus still as a divided country. And of course Berlin comes to my mind, how east and west were divided in Germany. And actually I was in Cyprus ten years ago and I thought that it was amazing that this kind of departed state was still keeping up. You see the border and the bufferzone - it is getting rusty and it is getting old. In Berlin the Wall was a solid architecture- it boldly stood there. It could’ve stayed there much longer but it was put down - which for us Germans is still amazing. You know, during the division of Germany there was a certain disinformation on both sides. Especially in printed matters. So I thought that it would be interesting to have materials from the North and from the South of Cyprus - describing each other and to put this material together. I am working with collages, where you can put in context different materials - that was my starting point for the bufferzone project. (...) Frederic Lezmi: Well, when Anna first told me about the project I was very excited. I am a photographer and in my previous projects I have photographed in Beirut, Prishtina and Sarajevo. My focus lies on the post conflict situation of these cities. What are the long term effects of civil wars on the fabric of the city. So when Anna invited me to join I directly said yes. (...) Anna H: The fields. That was actually to make equal equal. In the beginning we thought of making one picture of this. But it was difficult because there’s much more printed material from the south side, and much more visible and much more attractive. Like the island of Afrodite, there were beautiful photos but in the north side there were really crappy newspaper clippings and prints. Selda A: It was hard; it was a big challenge to work in the north because of this lack of documentation and print. Anna H: It was just… Like this House for Cooperation we’ve seen, it was also very unbalanced. Like how many books came from north and how many books came from south, Greek publishers from English publishers. So I tried to balance it out in the collage, I tried to take, as much material from the north as from the south, but is not really representative. That’s why I think in the end the book became multi-layered thing but not very structure. Because it’s not really a research or something. Because we cannot really compare. Because the material is unbalanced. Selda A: This was the challenge for you. What’s the next thing that made your work harder? If something could be changed what would you like to change I mean in your work or research? For example we worked in the field that was very big and there was not a public transportation, everybody need someone to drive you there. So anybody was that much independent in his or her field because there were not assistance. So what was it for you? Selda Asal: What was a challenge for you? I mean how did the process change your work and research? Anna Heidenhain: The short time in Cyprus was a real challenge, So Fred and I decided to collect as much material as possible while we where on ground and then process everything when we are back in Istanbul. Frederic Lezmi: Back in Istanbul we spend a lot of time viewing all our material. Anna made her collages and I edited all my pictures. Selda Asal: How did you then bring your work together? Frederic Lezmi: That was the most interesting part. At first we tried to bring our images together in one book. We tried a lot of things, but we where not satisfied. One morning Anna came to our daily working sessions and I told her: I have an Idea. Why don‘t we make two books and somehow glue them together. We tested around a little bit and it worked. Anna Heidenhain: The editing then was very complex, because if we would change something in my book it would effect everything else. But after a few days of combining it worked out well. At least we had the feeling it works for us. From Selda Asal in conversation with Anna Heidenhain and Frederic Lezmi. ‘A Bees Incident’ is based on a visit conducted in May 2013 into the UN controlled buffer zone that separates Cyprus in a northern and southern part. The buffer zone cuts through the island, being in some places only a few meters wide while spanning over a few kilometres in other areas. As recorded by the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus, ‘its northern and southern limits are the lines where the belligerents stood following the ceasefire of 16 August 1974’. Within the confines of this ‘no man’s land’, official strict regulations and policies coexist along with the specific individuals assigned to administrate its control and the local civic actors claiming and occasionally renegotiating its ‘terms of use’. Our interest lies in investigating the wider frame of social, political and economical relationships between the different groups’ activities intersecting in the buffer zone while at the same time evaluating the potential contained in singular incidents as meaningful forms of exceptions or anomalies, disrupting the dead zones’ ostensible neutrality. Our video work traces a minimal incident, one of the many conflictual events resulting from the civil agricultural activities interacting with the presence of foreign troops on the divided island. Such minor conflicts and complaints normally surpass public awareness, as physical access to the buffer zone is highly restricted, and so is the flow of information regarding any activities within. However, in this case–hereby named ‘The Bees Incident‘–accounts on an accident involving a bees swarm attacking a national guard soldier on sentry duty at one of the buffer zone ‘gateways’ leaked into the media sphere of the island, covering a partial aspect of the occurrence. Upon further investigation, different fragments and conflicting perspectives on the incident emerged. The work seeks to trace and confront the multiple viewpoints and accounts of the different actors involved in the incident, incorporating the hypotheses, the doubts and uncertainties as an integral part of the narrative in construction. It questions the ontological status of the event as such, showing it as an ambiguous amalgam: a construct of consciousness and unconsciousness, narration and diffusion, of politics and ideology, of reality and fiction, contingency and causality. By reducing the scale of observation and focusing on this singular incident in the buffer zone, we want to consider its value as a triggering event for addressing and questioning side-aspects of the ethno-national conflict and the management of the status quo in Cyprus. The layered and obscured account that unfolds through the multiple recounting of a story leads to a broader reflection on micro-history and the validity of the historical narrative. It inquires as to the possible relations between the individual and the collective ontological mode, seeking to surpass the morbid political fractions petrified in the latter. Can the isolated and fragmented story open imaginative passageways towards an alternative projection, towards subversive forms of communality as opposed to the commonplace function of the buffer zone as one of reducing shock by avoiding contact? And can the natural space of the buffer zone and its non-human agents be respected as stakeholders within this future process of becoming? Naomi Hennig - Eleni Mouzourou The incident (if not the event, the socio-drama) exists in repetition, regularity, multitude, and there is no way of saying absolutely whether its level is quite without fertility or scientific value. It must be given closer examination.1 obviously, Historical knowledge involves the construction of documentary series. Less obvious is the attitude that the historian must assume in regard to the anomalies that crop up in the documentation. Furet proposed ignoring them, observing that the hapax legomenon (that which is documentarily unique) is not usable in the perspective of serial history. But the hapax legomenon, strictly speaking, does not exist. Any document, even the most anomalous, can be inserted into a series. In addition, it can, if properly analyzed, shed light on still-broader documentary series.2 There are people who imagine in good faith that a document can be the expression of reality... As if a document could express something different from it-self:... A document is a fact. The battle is another fact (an infinity of other facts). The two cannot make one... The man who acts is a fact. And the man who narrates is another fact... Every piece of evidence provides testimony only of itself; of its proper moment, of its proper origin, of its proper end, and of nothing else...3 The direction of an action to one and the same end is that which is called consent. [...] The experience we have of certain living creatures that continually live in such good order and government, for their common benefit, is in that little creature the bee, which is therefore reckoned amongst animalia politica.4 VIDEO CREDITS Voices: Christophoros Liverdos, Elena Pavlidou, Ellada Evangelou, Nikolas Kouroumtzis 2 4 Audio text sources: Manolis Kalatzis / POLITIS Defensive Behaviour of Honey Bees: Organization, Genetics and Comparisons with other Bees. by Michael D. Muğlak bir alaşım olarak göstererek olayın ontolojik statüsünü sorgular: bilinç ve bilinçsizliğin, politika ve ideolojinin, gerçeklik ve kurgunun, beklenmedik olan ve zaiyatın anlatı ve yayılması üzerine bir yapı. 4 Referanslar 1: Fernand Braudel, History and Sociology 2: C. During my residency in Nicosia, I performed the exercise of walking in the city, considering it as an act of negotiation: namely, between the representational – seemingly continuous – surface of a map and the physical space of the city: a multilayered landscape of spatial and temporal ruptures, cuts and cracks. Can the practice of walking become a tool for stitching together the fragmented space as experienced in Nicosia? THE MAP (AND THE BODY) A number of ambiguous discontinuities can be found in the current official road and tourist maps of Nicosia addressing the ‘visitor.’ These maps exist in a double version, each distinctly produced and widely distributed by the respective local authorities of both sides of the divided island. Both variations selectively emphasize and/or omit certain topographical features. On the Greek Cypriot map of the city, streets are featured in their complete length and form. However, once the lines indicating them extend across the dividing line, which is wide and gray, their names disappear, being replaced by blank lines and appearing as their ghostly prolongations. These ‘prolongations’ are the ones given names on the Turkish Cypriot map, only in turn to become – this time abruptly – interrupted before they again cross the dividing line, which is thin, red and dotted. The attempt to combine the two maps by cutting them and sticking them together reveals slight but significant differences in representation of scale, framing and perspective. These features render them seemingly incompatible and problematize their function as tools indicating possibilities of mobility within the space they represent. THE BODY (AND THE MAP) When envisioning a city as a living organism, its streets, footpaths and alleyways facilitate the movement and public interaction of its inhabitants, while also constituting an equivalent to its vital circulatory system. Wandering in the narrow streets of the old city of Nicosia, I become particularly conscious of my body and am reminded of its possibilities of movement as well as its limitations when I repeatedly encounter forbidding spatial features. The more I approach the heart of the city, the more my direction becomes controlled as I come across abrupt spatial cuts: dead-end streets interrupted through the dividing zone. The streets cede their agency as connectors of places and people; the buffer zone creates mental as well as physical gaps in the potentiality of sharing the city. DETOUR// A deviation from a direct course or the usual procedure; a route around a planned area of prohibited or reduced access; Searching for alternative perspectives and approaches to those in conflict in Nicosia and its maps lead me to explore the notion of a ‘detour’ as a possible process for renegotiating and reflecting circulation in the city. On my collage of the two Nicosia maps, I draw a number of alternative routes, hypothetical shortcuts that would allow me to ‘bridge’ – by circumventing – the interrupted streets of the city‘s centre. I attempt to use one of them as a possible ‘score’ for walking. Starting from Athena Street – situated at the easternmost extremity of the old walled city on the south of the buffer zone – I walk the traced path leading to (what I estimate is) its respective extension in the northern part of the city. The absurdity of the loop involved in this attempt becomes tangible through its disproportionate duration vis-à-vis the physical distance between the places it seeks to connect. At the same time, this distance is counterbalanced by the actual act of walking that in-between space, namely the living city. The walk gives way to unexpected encounters as the regular rhythm of my steps crosses that of other passersby. On the way, disparate elements indicating the constantly changing cityscape – for example, temporary objects and gestures, inscriptions on the walls commenting actuality and the silent presence of vegetation – invite me to mentally deviate from a predetermined path. Birgit Auf Der Lauer Peering (at) Holes The search for the manifestations of the mostly invisible European outer borders brought us to the Bufferzone workshops. Europe’s borders not only begin on the northern coasts of the Mediterranean, or with the lines on maps demarcating the Shengen territory. Through bilateral agreements between Europe and its neighboring countries the borders started to proliferate, became non linear and their effects and manifestations multifaceted. Different border statuses collapse onto the military territory between north and south Cyprus. It is a political and cultural rupture as much as a moment of war frozen in ceasefire. As Turkey claims the northern part of Cyprus, the border also belongs to the European outer border. It protects one community from the other but also as a consequence of the unresolved conflict, also protects Europe from illegal migration. Istanbul is a well-known transit point for people from the Middle East and African countries. They arrive in the city with the hope to save money for their further journey to Europe. The district Tarlabasi is in transit as much as the migrants. Behind the metal fences of house ruins created by a reckless urban planning policy, they find shabby shelters, among drug dealers, mafia and prostitution. During regular police round ups in the ruins everyone without official papers is picked up. From there illegalized people might be brought to refugee detention centres – the first step in the procedure of deportation financed by the EU. The drawing installation shows the outcomes of two aesthetic inquiries: 1. Peering at holes made or used by illegalized pedestrians in fenced up urban area. 2. Peering holes into military structures while drawing for hours where taking photographs or making video is forbidden. Birgit Auf Der Lauer Kıbrıs’ta ‘Barış’ı’ İnşa Etmek Building ‘The Peace’ in Cyprus Bu proje Kıbrıs’taki ara bölgede yer alan yedi adet geçiş kapısının mekansal ilişkilerni haritalamayı amaçlar. This research project is concerned with mapping particular spatial relations of different authorities at seven different checkpoints across the buffer zones in Cyprus. This work particularly focuses on the spatial political relations of buffer zone crossings that are represented on Google maps because obtaining precise maps along buffer zones and marking each ‘buffer zone’ boundary in detailed scales of 1/50000, 1/ 25000 or greater ones, is not possible since they are kept as a military ‘secret’ by the UN Military Force, Turkish Military Forces, and, the National Guard of Cyprus. The spatial relations are indicated in simple scattered texts in the context of sovereign power relations which contest, Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot Authorities, the United Nations in Cyprus, as well as the Military Forces’ prescribed methods of building ‘The Peace’ in Cyprus. These methods usually involve a diminishing rather than a promotion of the method of peace in which the methods themselves become the playground for antagonistic forces and their demands. This work is part of a larger research project by Erhan Öze 45 Benim burada yapmak istediğim projenin başvurusunda da belirttiğim gibi sınır geciş kapılarındaki kanunlari görselleştirmeye dayalı. Erhan Öze What I want to do here is to visualize the laws that the border crossing gates are based. How are the written laws applied? What is the line where it ends and it starts ? Whose laws are they? It is the matter of whose laws they are anyway. The whole purpose is to visualize and show how the laws of the KKTC, Cypriot Forces, United Nations and the Cyprus Republic differ from each other and how is the transition in the buffer zone is constructed. Besause the buffer zone is not only composed of a line, a building, a wall or a road as it seems. In some parts, a buildings only one wall can be a part of the buffer zone whilst the other parts of the building might be another country’s territory. At the same time this area can belong to the military forces or United Nations. Therefore my main focus on the project is to illustrate who controls there and how. To do this I choose the case of very complex crossing points. Because UN abdicates some of its rights in order to allocate them to Cyprus Republic’s and Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus’s authorities. Thus two zones start to touch each other. There exists an invisible map. And the whole purpose is to show which piece belongs to which construction and which authority has the rights to enter which part of the building on a three dimensional level. Because there are no specific international law. The reason that this doesn’t exist in the buffer zone is because the war situation still continues. A ceasefire agreement hasn’t been signed and the buffer zone has a continuously changing structure. From 1974 to 2013, different agreements have been signed at different times. Some of them are signed as friendship agreements. Some current ones are signed under the name of memorandum. In this way, we became interested in looking for straddle lines of tension between what “is” and what is “hoped for”. A widening way of approaching the issue of buffer zone is through other mechanisms, like gentrification, which work from above to divide and displace poorer and other local populations. Looking a little closer at the particular type of gentrification processes, which take place in Istanbul, became a focal point of interest for us. The workshops provided a space in which to both observe and consider the forms of zoning regulations in the city. In this vein, we invited photographer, Hüseyin Yılmaz, to participate in the project with his recent documentary photography and videos, which zoom into personal sites and stories of people with different backgrounds – in terms of ethnicity, economic and social class, gender and sexual orientation – intensely effected by the imposed conditions of being temporarily suspended during long procedures of displacement. While in Istanbul, we witnessed the emergence of a new socio-economic border in Cyprus. In the words of EU Commissioner for Economic Affairs, Olli Rehn, “the depth of the financial crisis in Cyprus means that the near future will be difficult for the country and its people”. After the unfolding events which followed the implementation of the Troika “rescue” plans in Greece, Portugal, Spain and Ireland, we instantly witnessed vividly horrifying images of the near future: the decline of social welfare, the rampant rise of unemployment, thus poverty, the reinvention of extreme nationalisms, etc. Our immediate reaction was to imagine what this might mean for the immediate future increase of multiple buffer zones in Cyprus. Not long after our arrival to Cyprus, the workshops once again brought us into the zones of new and old conflicts imposed by official powers, both local and international. However, a firsthand proliferating distrust of the public toward its own government opened up a very different public and political space from which to raise questions. For us, this surfaced the right time to extend our efforts away from established approaches toward the ongoing unresolved national conflict, now layered with new austerity measures whose feverish consequences remain to be seen, and to refocus on possible shifts of perspectives rising from the Cyprus public. pick nick projects is a newly founded collective, based in Cyprus, and initiated by Alkis Hadjiandreou (visual artist and architect), Panayiotis Michael (visual artist), Maria Petrides (independent writer and curator) who are working together on making public interventions and events in the city space(s). pick nick events pick on “public opinion” formation(s) and build up open and opening platforms of interaction and exchange. As an NGO and a not-for- profit art/activist organization, pick nick projects addresses current socio-political issues, such as those of race, gender, sexuality, immigration, tourism, and, gentrification. It puts current themes, from the neighbourhood to the city, and the state, on the public and political agenda, and offers frameworks in which experience and information knowledge can be shared with other localities. ‘Minik Bar ve ya Tarlabaşı’ndaki son müzikhol’ ‘Minik Bar or The Last Music Hall of Tarlabaşı’ video 15.26 min Hüseyin Yilmaz (pick nick projects ortaklığıyla / in collaboration with pick nick projects ) 2011 Fotograf serisi Series of photographs Hüseyin Yilmaz (pick nick projects ortaklığıyla / in collaboration with pick nick projects ) 2011 Bu film geçtiğimiz 20 sene içerisinde oluşturuldu, yani uzun süreli bir proje. From Sabine Küpher Büsch ve Selda Asal’ın röportajından alıntıdır. This film was created during the past 20 years, so it was a long-term project. Its main aim is actually to try to show the crossing of the border from different angles. The definition of the national ideology and the political structures shifted with the building of the border in the 1970th. The housing and the separation of urban clusters, that were unities before, built new urban spaces. All this aspects influenced also the building of identity of the individual citizen. The urban and political structures and the self-definition of individuals were undergoing changes during the specific political Areas on Cyprus. The definition of the national state or of the two nationalities in Cyprus had a central role in the management of the collective and individual identity. When I went there in 2000 for the first time the project – in this sense - was not in my head, because I could not foresee, that only three years later the borders would get opened. The urban and political structures and the self-definition of individuals were undergoing changes during the specific political Areas on Cyprus. The urban and political structures and the selfdefinition of individuals were undergoing changes during the specific political Areas on Cyprus. The definition of the national state or of the two nationalities in Cyprus had a central role in the management of the collective and individual identity. When I went there in 2000 for the first time the project – in this sense - was not in my head, because I could not foresee, that only three years later the borders would get opened. But crossing the border as a topic and the effects of the division of the country on the identity building of people had been already my first vision for this film. During my first visit in 2000 I was mainly working with youngsters. They had been already engaged in the peace movement for two years. In the age of thirteen, they had already reflected, how they were manipulated during their school time in the history classes for example. So the Greek Cypriots had a very one-sided imagination of the cruel sides of the invasion by the Turkish Army without any knowledge about the reasons for the intervention. And the Turkish youngsters vice versa, also had the image of every single Greek as a potential inhuman killer of small children and women during the period of the war in their head. I witnessed how fruitful it had been, that during the activities of the peace movement both youngster groups had learned to alternate their kind of national identity and also their individual approaches to themselves and the others. Youngsters, at that time, seemed to be for me more independent and flexible in their attitudes then the adults. Most of them were planning to spend some time abroad to get new inputs. They were sure to come back one day, but saw the necessity to gather some life-experiences outside of the isolated island. The film was shot in different time periods. The first time I went there, in the year 2000, the border was closed for Greek and Turkish Cypriots. The Turkish people were not able to go to the Greek side and the Greek people were not able to go to the other side. They could only meet in the buffer zone. And even for me it was very difficult to cross at that time. For example the first time I went for filming – I was not actually used to use a camera myself. I had a Greek cameraman, but he was not allowed to come to the Turkish side. Greek Cypriots were supposed to sign a paper, claiming that they accept the existence of the Turkish Northern Republic of Cyprus, which they would never do. So I started doing the Camera work myself in the Northern Part. In 2000 the whole production was indexed by the closed border-situation in Cyprus. In 2003, when I was going for the second time, the Turkish side had opened the borders and allowed people to cross without obligations. SA: Did they open the border one-sided only? One sided. That’s why… I was there for coincidently. It wasn’t planned. And then I found my old friends from the production of the 2000 to cross the border with them. And that’s why the filming project continued. Everybody was so enthusiastic in 2003, that they suddenly underlined their common Cypriot identity. I experienced, that crossing the border was suddenly getting a very metaphorical act. The whole process formed a new idea of how the visions on nationalities and nationalism are patterned by political circumstances. In 2003 I was joining very different people to their former houses on the other side. I went with Greek Cypriots to their old villages in the North and joined Turkish Cypriots to their old houses in Paphos in the South. It was very touching to see what happened to people during this process. Although all of them were part of the peace movement, ı saw people shaking suddenly after centuries being confronted with their old homes. Most of the houses did not exist anymore; they were in a way confronted with something they had imagined for twenty years rather unchanged. One Turkish Lady was crying at the spot, where she had remembered their house. One old Greek villager was totally disoriented and desperate, when he couldn’t recognize his village close to Lefkoşa any more. Of course this is the experience of displacement of a certain generation. So the struggles of the younger generation in the peace-movement and the confrontation of their parents- and grandparents with the sudden opening of the borders is one main part of the movie. It was shot in 2000 and 2003. We went there again in 2012, three times in general. Today the situation has changed again. The buffer zone still exists, but it’s not a life-limiting border anymore. I mean you can cross it any time. (…) You have much more mobility between the two societies. Today there is a kind of situation, where some people even miss the old political awareness. The young generation is much less politicized, than the people I met ten years ago, while the political conflict is still proceeding. Our film project is very much concentrating on the estimation of individual political identities in shifting political situations and the different methods people develop to cope with rapid changes. In 2000 the border was hermetically closed; in 2003 it was getting open, but people were politically very engaged; nowadays you actually have a status quo regarding the political reunification process, but you don’t have so much pressure on the individual anymore. For all this three periods we faced different management-styles of individuals and their political identity. That is the main Focus of the movie. Sürecin kendi kendini yapılandırması ve sanatçıların ortak deneyiminin bunu oluşturması bu deneyselliğin en önemli odaklarından birini oluşturur. bufferzone bu atölye calışmaları serisinin son projesi olarak sanatçıların yeni bir deneyim platformunda geliştireceği ortak stratejiler için alan açmayı hedefler. www.apartmentproject.org Apartment Project Apartment Project, which is established in 1999, is one of the first artist run spaces based in Istanbul and Turkey. Apartment project; which was started for interdisciplinary sharing, communion production and exhibiting opportunities; had been an open platform for solo exhibitions of artists from Turkey and abroad, interdisciplinary partnerships, presentations, and panel discussions. In this context AP, organized mobile studio practices also with the participation of initiatives in Southern Caucus and Balkan countries. Since September 1st 2012, Apartment Project have been working on their projects in Berlin by suggesting several communal living and collective production models that focus more on process. Besides inviting artists and exhibition projects, it is aimed to generate collective and mutual communication, collaborations and different varieties of creation/production possibilities in Neukölln, where the project is based. Since the workshop Reciprocal Visit in 2009, Apartment Project organizes experimental workshops that bring artists, initiatives and art operators from various geographies together. In these workshops it fosters an experimental process that focuses on transition and borders, cultural similarities, conflicts as well as encouraging collaborations amongst the artists. Common experiences in different zones and geographies, collaboration of artists by associating their practices and creating possibilities for the production of new ideas have been the main function of the workshops Reciprocal Visit, Re-Locate and Underconstruction-Berlin that have been organized by Apartment Project so far. In this sense Apartment Project suggests a collective reflection on working together strategies. Workshops harbor a mobile experience and an exploration of the dynamics of collective living and working. The foremost essence of the experimental structure is based on the process constructing itself and the common experience of the artists. Bufferzone, being the most recent project of the workshop series, intends to provide a possibility of a common experience platform for artists to develop new strategies. www.apartmentproject.org
