The events that were launched as a protest against the
project which is planned to be started in Gezi Park and
that prevailed over Turkey in following days harbor
different dynamics in terms of its internal and external
incentives.
Demonstrations started upon sensitive attitudes of
people to the city and environment in which they live
acquired a different ground in following days and
transformed into a national movement against the
government. At that step, some points such as continuous
and frequent explanations done by Western states
regarding the process, interest of national and
international media to the events and active use of social
media became influential.
In the focus of demonstrations lasting for three full

weeks there appeared some objections like that governors
hold a totalitarian understanding, lifestyles of people
have been intervened and that social demands have not
been taken into consideration. On the other hand, harsh
intervention of security forces to demonstrators in
especially first days of the protests caused a reaction
among those segments of society who did not share the
same views and thereby became influential in prevailing
of the demonstrations.
On the other hand, the claim that the protests are an
operation of the global system that gets annoyed of that
Turkey has been on increase recently in various fields
was also voiced as a dominant view.
We hope that this report that was prepared regarding
the events by our committee’s observations and tried to
deal with the process in different aspects makes a
contribution in understanding of the process of Gezi
Park.
We give our condolences to families of those who lost
their lives during the happenings in Gezi Park and wish
speedy recoveries to all the injured security officers and
demonstrators.

olaylarýn seyri
the development of the events

May 28: Protests gained acceleration and police
intervention began.
May 29: Tension was increased with the police
intervention to the tents of demonstrators and the
statement of the Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoðan
that he did in the opening ceremony of the construction
of Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge and directed to the
demonstrators of Gezi Park in the way that “Whatever
you do, we did make our decision!”1. In the following
days, protests of demonstrators transformed into
terrorizing acts, police intervention became violent and
bilateral conflicts.
May 31: Demonstrations spattered over different cities
of Turkey and demonstrations in these cities were
intervened by police.
Beside protests in the squares, people in some other
quarters of Istanbul held marches and protested the
government with pots and pans at their hands by
screaming slogans.
June 3: Erdoðan kept his uncompromising attitude in
the explanations that he made just before his visit abroad.

That the events took place in social media and
international media organs intensively exacerbated the
demonstrations. However, the protests shaped around
an environmental sensitiveness in the first days
transformed gradually into an attrition campaign against
the government and particularly the personality of Prime
Minister Erdoðan. An atmosphere appeared in which
marginal groups gave support, Turkish flag was burnt,2
posters of Abdullah Öcalan were hung,3 beers were
drunk inside the mosques nearby4, the people were
harassed and especially women wearing headscarf were
attacked5 and this atmosphere caused many people,
institutions and organizations withdraw their support.
June 5: In the meeting with Bulent Arýnç, the deputy
premier, demonstrators of Gezi Park made demands
such as that Gezi Park be left as a park, violent
intervention against demonstrators be stopped, regarding
demonstrators losing their lives during the events
governors of Istanbul, Ankara and Hatay and chiefs of
police be removed of duty, detained demonstrators be
released and a statement be made regarding that they
will not be inquired into. Along with these demands
some demands were made regarding cease of the projects
like Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge, airport, HESs, Kanal
Istanbul.
June 7: Prime Minister Erdoðan returning from his
visit abroad were met in the airport by tens of thousands
of people who supported himself against the protests,
which transformed into an attrition campaign to his
personality. In his statement Erdoðan made emphasis

vurgu yapmýþ, küresel sisteme ve faiz lobisine dikkat
çekmiþtir. Protestolarda yer alan özellikle genç kitleye
seslenen Erdoðan, gösterilerin bir an önce sonlandýrýlmasýný
on reasons underlying the demonstrations and drew
attention to global system and interest rate lobby.
Appealing especially to the youth who took part in the
protests, Erdoðan wanted demonstrations be stopped
immediately. Sharing with the people the details of the
project which will be realized in Taksim, Erdoðan
emphasized that regarding the emergence of the events
there was not any situation like “destruction of trees”
but it rested on ideological grounds.
June 12: Erdoðan had an audience with a committee
of 11 people including artists, scholars, activists and
students and exchanged ideas as regards protests, and
negotiated about solution offers. Similar audiences also
continued with different committees in 13th and 14th
of June. The choice appeared in the meetings to be
holding a plebiscite about the pedestrianisation project
and the construction of Topçu Kýþlasý that are planned
to be carried out in Taksim and asserted to be the cause
of the events. The government stipulated to abide by
the judicial decisions; it was said that a plebiscite will
be carried out even in the case that the judiciary give
permission to Topçu Kýþlasý, and it was demanded that
Gezi Park be evacuated immediately and thereby the
tension in the country be ended.
An explicit intention of the evacuation of Gezi Park
occurred, after the constructive talks took place between
the representatives of Taksim Platform and the Prime
Minister. However, the picture changed with coming
back to the area of the protest; and the persistence of
the demonstration announced again.
On the evening of June 15, the authorities clarified that
they received the necessary messages of the Gezi Protests,
and declared the need for the evacuation of the Gezi
Park in order to retrieve the in the country and to
return to normal life in Istanbul. The announcements
made in the same evening around 20:00 p.m. by the
security forces ??in the direction of the demonstrators’
evacuation of the area; and an important part of the
protesters were left the area consequently. However,
the groups resisting not to quit the Gezi Park chose to
clash with the security officials. After a period of ongoing
tension, the Gezi Park evacuated by the security forces.
“Respect for the National Will” rallies were organized
in Ankara and Istanbul, on the 15th & the 16th of June
respectively, and people protested against Gezi Park
process. Along the rallies to which hundreds of thousands
of people attended in Ankara and Istanbul, Turkish
Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan stressed on the
games played against Turkey in the pretext of the Gezi
Park. He also d the attitudes of the US and EU
Countries, the way the reflections of events in the
international media, as well as the interventions of
interest groups and the interest lobby.

For this reason, these events are a revolt of modern and

“I think these events are not ordinary reactions of people

the session, the simulation of events that have occurred

Then, Taksim gets an identity, just like Tahrir…”
Meeting revolved around the following sentences:
“Turkish youth are apolitical youth. When the young
people come down squares, who have never participated
in any protests so far, they would become politicized
necessarily. The streets should be kept alive. While the
issues like freedom, hope for democracy and civil
constitution pour the society into the streets; it would
be very difficult to convert the square to a people's
movement due to the inability of the political groups in
Turkey as well as of national leftist movements to provide
progressive targets. The unity of organizations must be
ensured. If not, people's movement in Turkey may turn
into a conflict in itself unlike the ‘Arab Spring’. The
lack of organized youth for freedom may result in the

Of course this news is only part of the relevant statements
of authorities in international politics.
b. Media
The Israel and the West press immediately
made ??the assessment of ‘Turkish Spring’ just after
the starting actions in Gezi Park turned into a conflict.
The interests of world media in Taksim showed suddenly
a significant increase, following the U.S. State
Department’s announcement of their “concerns”.
Ministry spokesman Jen Psaki used the following
phrases in this explanation: “We are concerned about
the number of injured protestors during the police’s
dispelling the protestors. Turkey's long-term stability,
security and the way to guarantee the well-being of the
country are going through the approval of such
fundamental freedoms as expression, assembly and
association.”
Reuters began to publish live events following the
announcement of the United States, in a way never
done before. The BBC also shared the conflicts in detail,
moment by moment. CNN also broadcasted the events
live, which made a clear disinformation Boston attack
at the beginning of April in the U.S. While the New
York Times announced the news in headlines, the most
interesting comment came in the British Guardian
newspaper.
This newspapers by referring to the Arab Spring,
claimed that “the actions spread the seeds of Turkish
Spring” in the comments section of the article on Gezi
Park protests.

Haberde

Yine geçtiðimiz günlerde camilere saldýrýlarýyla gündeme
gelen Ýngiliz Savunma Birliði adlý ýrkçý yapýlanma liderlerinden
Robinson, Taksim Gezi Parký eylemcilerine 'Ýslamcýlýða
direniyorlar' diye destek verdi. Tommy Robinson, Twitter
hesabýnda, Taksim Gezi Parký dolayýsýyla yapýlan eylemleri
savunarak 'Türk halký Ýslamcýlýða direniyor' yazdý.
Ýstanbul Taksim'deki olaylarý en ayrýntýlý duyuran kanallardan
biri Ýngiliz BBC oldu. Olaylarý manþetten veren, polis
müdahalesini son dakika olarak an be an paylaþan BBC Türkçe,
eylemcilerin Twitter'daki paylaþýmlarýna da yer verdi. BBC

Park and the rest of the events that occurred were
covered in German media extensively. Frankfurter
Allgemeine Zeitung likened the events in Istanbul to
the German environmentalists’ demonstrations against
cutting the trees and the destruction of the main train
station in Stuttgart. The tabloid newspaper Bild used
the title of “The Anger Night of the Turks” for the
news headlines on the Internet. The newspaper, “Some
of the protesters have already been comparing the
Taksim Square to Egypt's Tahrir square, where the
toppling of Mubarak took place”, said.
While the Gezi Park events were seen as the secondary
news in the Western and Arab media, Israeli media
have chosen to announce them in headlines. The Israeli
newspaper Haaretz gave wide coverage to Gezi Park
actions. The newspaper wrote as such; dozens of people
were injured in the police using tear gas and water
cannons to interfere with the demonstrations. The
protests were organized in other cities as a response to
that issue. It was expressed in the report that such largescale demonstrations had been organized in Turkey for
the first time after many years. In the same way, the
newspapers such as the Jerusalem Post and Yedioth
Ahranot announced the events in Taksim in the headlines
of their websites with photographs.
Al Jazeera, which made live broadcast about the Taksim
actions day long and gave the views of the experts, said
that the responses began with Gezi Park critiques turned
into anti-government protests. Al Jazeera described the
situation as “Here's the question many complaints are
the police’ use of tear gas without a discrimination” and
used the statement of “'People are very angry”. Besides,
it was also stated that “And for many, they are the

and coughing helplessly due to gas.”
La Repubblica: “Attack to Gezi Park. The activists

There are dozens of wounded and detention.”31
CNN International has achieved one more
of the biased and misleading news reports throughout
the process. In a picture gallery of official website named
as “Anti-government demonstrations in Turkey” showed
a frame from "Respect for the national will" rally, which
took place in Istanbul Kazlýceçme and more than one
million people attended. Although 19 pictures of the
total 20-picture gallery reflected the Gezi Park related
events, one picture of the gallery was from Erdogan’s
Kazlýcesme rally and caused reactions in public and in
social media. While the top of the gallery title was ‘Antigovernment demonstrations in Turkey’, the statement
of “Tens of thousands of people gathered in Istanbul
Kazlýceçme rally on the June 16th to listen to the speech
of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan” was under
the frame of the photo of the AK Party rally.32
The news compiled from national and international
media bodies reveals how the process of Gezi Park
events is handled by the U.S. and European media,
especially.

The individuals, who did not head towards violence,
and struggle for advocacy by voicing their democratic
demands had been effective especially in the first three
days of demonstrations,. However, the course of events
has changed after this stage with the fact that external
factors involved in the process. The intervention of the
police to the protesters especially in the early days, and
the excessive use of pepper spray were condemned by
every segment of society. This issue was also expressed
to the public by UHIM with the title of “The Lessons
from the Gezi Park Events” in the press release.
However, with the alteration of the course of events in
the coming days, the involvement of the marginalized
groups in the process, the protesters’ resort to violence,
destruction of public property and the environment led
a similar response to turn to the protesters this time.
During the demonstrations, the attacks to Prime
Ministry Building in Ankara and Prime Minister's
Office in Istanbul Dolmabahce are thought-provoking.
On the other hand, the demonstrations had gradually
directed to the personality of the Prime Minister in the
process, and the insults and the threats targeted at the
personality and the family of the Turkish Republic’s
Prime Minister, thus the deviation from the political
style has occurred in an unprecedented manner never
seen before.
Besides, an elected prime minister brought to power by
50 % of the public support tried to be portrayed as a
dictator and attempted to establish a perception of
dictator in the eyes of the community. This discourse
had been re-processed constantly both in international

Gezi Parký eylemleri sürerken Papa Francis’in kendisini

CNN’in 13 savaþ muhabirini Türkiye’ye göndermesi, gösterileri

public and by opposition elements of Turkey. In fact,
along the process of the Gezi Park Events, the discourse
of Prime Minister’s being a dictator had been in the
focal point of protests and a public opinion had been
attempted to establish out of that discourse.
Expressed concerns of the U.S. and European politicians
about the incidents, warning its citizens who intend to
go to Turkey, the successive statements of dictatorship
in Turkey in an organized fashion, which confirmed
each other, explain the way how the global actors that
shape world politics approach to the Gezi Park Events.
At this point, a report published by Yigit Bulut, from
the Channel 24 and the Chief Editor and author of the
Star newspaper reveals how the global actors develop
strategies about the processes similar to those in Gezi
Park Events of Turkey. It was claimed in a report,
which was claimed to be prepared by intelligence agencies
of the two largest countries in Europe in 2009 and a
Turkish university rector alleged to participate, that
Turkey’s momentum attained in recent years must be
stopped, for his ultimate goal is Islam, allegedly written.
Francis Pope’ statement, spiritual leader of the Catholic
world, in a meeting with Armenian Patriarch Nerses
Bedros “Armenian Genocide was the first one in the
20th century” shows the process in Turkey led by global
actors and attempted to be instrumentalized.
Similarly, International media organizations have dealt
with the Gezi Park events in a similar vein, failed to
inform the world public with biased and provocative
news, and thus manipulated the events. The issues such
as media organization’s live broadcasts lasting several
hours like in CNN, BBC, Reuters, Associated Press
& Al Jazeera, CNN’s sending 13 war correspondents
to Turkey, presenting the demonstrations with an
attitude similar to the one in Arab Spring, and giving
the impression of a civil war happening in Turkey

baþlýðýnýn kullanýldýðý 8 Haziran tarihli sayýsýyla The Economist
de göstermiþtir. Wall Street Journal, New York Times,
New
York Times ise 3 Haziran tarihinde “What’s Happening in
Turkey?”
Uluslararasý sahada gerek siyasi mercilerin, gerek medya

provide important clues about the approaches of the
international media outlets to the process in Turkey. A
similar attitude was displayed by the Economist
magazine’s issue of the June 8th as Prime Minister
Erdogan’s depiction as a sultan in the cover page and
used the headlines of “Democrat or Sultan? Erdogan
and the Turkish Riot”. The Wall Street Journal, New
York Times, the Washington Post and the Los Angeles
Times involved in that process with their biased reviews
and news.
On June 3rd, full-page ad entitled as “What's
Happening in Turkey?” was given in the New York
Times, and a fundraising campaign was launched
moving this announcement. That case took place yet in
the early days of the demonstrations strengthens the
claims of how the actions are organized.
The approach of international media outlets to the social
happenings outside their own countries is thoughtprovoking. While the international media organizations
broadcast in similar situations in their home countries
only for informational purposes, on the other hand, they
act with a provocative, manipulative and misleading
attitude towards the events in other parts of the world.
A comparison between the publications of UK originated
BBC and Reuter news agencies in Gezi Park
demonstration in Turkey and protest in England against
the G8 summit, which took place in Northern Ireland
on the same days, will be sufficient to demonstrate that
point. Anadolu Agency General Manager Kemal Öztürk
stated that during the events in the UK, they were not
allowed to make publications and their 3G connections
were cut off.
It was witnessed that media outlets, also known as the
mainstream media in our country, approached to the
events with the same attitude. Such media outlets
contributed to the creation of chaos by making
manipulative and provocative publications, instead of
informing the community in this process accurately. At
this stage of the process, UHÝM issued the second
press release entitled as “Turkey prepares for showdown
with Global System!”
The Islamophobic attitude of the West has long been
seen, when the approaches of political authorities in the
international arena and of media outlets to Gezi Park
events are analyzed. In fact, the issues dealt with respect
to Turkey in international arena such as recent
regulations of alcohol and encouragement of population
growth have always been associated with Islam, and the
perception of establishing an Islamist dictatorship in
Turkey has been attempted.
The social media play undoubtedly an important role
in the events’ coming to this point. UHÝM have focused
persistently on the fact that social media has been used
as a means of speculation in directing communities.
The social media had been used intensively in order to
manipulate the societies, especially during the process
of ‘Arab Spring’. Thus, the formation of feelings of
terror in the society was implemented by means of
rapidly spreading biased, false and provocative news.
Indeed, in the course of the Gezi Park events, the
images of different times and places were shown as if
taken during the Gezi Park events and the society was
deceived. A large number of provocative posts were
shared such as lots of people were killed or the police’s
oppression of people with huge water cannons- TOMAs.
Those types of news, photos and videos, which were
realized soon as not accurate, fulfilled the function of
agitating the society. At this point the question comes
to mind: Is the case same in Western countries as here?
We wonder if these countries allow to make manipulative
news on social media, thus to canalize the society into
a certain direction by this way?
On the other hand, some interventions of the advertising
sector targeting to drag the process into chaos were
observed. Media organs, which did not make
broadcastings supporting the process of Gezi Park
events were penalized in a sense, and had been subjected
to economic loss. Media buying agencies, which operate
on a global scale and lead a total of about $ 5 billion in
advertising industry, went to the cancellation of
advertising quickly. It was claimed that most of the
cancelled ads were belonging to the U.S. and UK based
firms having a large market share in Turkey and
Turkey's largest holding companies and banks.
Although the Gezi Park events began as reactions of
individuals, who were sensitive to their environment,

zikredilebilir.

they have gained an international dimension in the
coming days. When the process was evaluated with a
holistic approach, it would be seen that the global actors
have mobilized in the face of some discomforting
developments in Turkey. Turkey’s increased credibility
in international community in recent years in accordance
with the historical mission, showing a steady
improvement in the economic sphere, despite the crisis
in the world, important steps taken against the status
quo and to the tutelage understanding in the country,
and a serious coverage of distance in the solution of the
problem of terrorism, measures taken to prevent the
lobbies’ gaining an unfair advantage over Turkey,
especially the interest lobby are the other motives of
discomfort against out county. However, on the contrary
to these positive developments creating tension outside,
and in response to the assertion available in the country
as “Everything is going well”; a lot of criticisms from
different parties directed to Turkey on such as the
discourse of the government administrators, especially
the Prime Minister, and their ways of communicating
with the society, negative developments in the field of
urban planning, interference with lifestyle and personal
preferences, the government's relationship with the
global capital, and policy issues such as Syria. However,
these criticisms can be solved in the country’s political
mechanisms.
In fact, Turkey has been addressed to similar policies
in the past, supported by global actors, or directed and
applied by them personally. The approaches of U.S.
and European politicians, international media outlets,
Global capital groups and the status quo in Turkey to
the process of Gezi Park events are parallel to the
approaches which led the process to military coups in
the past.
Gezi Park events offer us important data in terms of
reflecting the way how the government administrators
or the state to relate to society. Especially in the first
days of the protests, some errors were observed in Prime
Minister Erdogan's approach in the form of protests,
in his discourse and expressions to the society. In this
process, the voices of people, who are sensitive to
developments in their country and use their democratic
rights, were not listened carefully. In short, the reflection
of the understanding of security guard precedes the
state, rather than the citizens of the state, which are
built in our country for many years. The citizens in
democratic governments should not only have a say
when voting in the ballot box, but also in the decisionmaking and implementation processes of government

administrators. A party’s having the country’s leadership
with the support of a lot of people does not mean that
it gives an unlimited entitlement to the party. Therefore,
governments should involve citizens in decision-making
and implementation processes and continue to work on
the basis of negotiation with society and information
giving to them. Indeed, during the process of the events,
the negotiation speeches of Prime Minister Recep
Tayyip Erdogan, particularly, Deputy Prime Minister
Bulent Arinc, and Istanbul Governor Huseyin Avni
Mutlu with those delegations; their explanations
addressing to all sectors of the field and carrying out
consultations with delegations may be cited as the gains
of the process.
The majority of the demonstrators in the Gezi Park
were of younger generations and this has not been
overlooked. This case has brought discussion and
reviews especially for younger audience between the
ages of 18-25. It is very clear to say that the age group
of the so-called crowd brought up in the period of the
administration of AK Party, which has been in power
over ten years.
In this regard, the applications of AK Party government
will be have undoubtedly an important role in the4
positive and negative evaluations to be made about the
younger generation of today. It was observed that the
young population base of the AK Party, which makes
up a significant portion of the country's youth, have
been engaged in the policies of the party and showing
insufficient sensitivity to social issues. On the other
hand, we have seen the formation of overly politicized
and marginalized young audience. As for the third
group, not engaged in any views in the political sense,
they seem to be insufficient in making sense of the
developments in the international arena.

adopted a discourse that will promote the pouring

news in Social media, which encountered regularly
and felt pervasively in Gezi Park events, should be
raised; as well as the necessary arrangements about
the legal space of the issue should be implemented.
• Süreç esnasýnda yaþananlar yaþam tarzý farklýlýklarýnýn bazý • What happened during the process showed that the
kesimlerce þiddete dönüþebileceðini göstermiþtir. Nitekim
eylemler esnasýnda özellikle baþörtülü bayanlara karþý
gerçekleþtirilen hakaret ve saldýrýlar, toplumun bir arada
yaþama ve farklýlýklara tahammül gösterme gibi erdemlerine
gölge düþürmüþtür.
• Gezi Parký olaylarýnýn ilk günlerinde güvenlik güçlerinin
kullanmýþ olduðu þiddet kabul edilemez. Toplumsal talepler
þiddet kullanýlarak bastýrýlmamalý, þiddet içermeyen
toplumsal hareketlilikler güvenlik zaafiyeti olarak
algýlanmamalýdýr. Güvenlik güçleri bu gibi durumlarda
topluma müdahale etmek için deðil, güvenliklerini saðlamak
için görev almalýdýr.
• Gezi Parký olaylarýnýn özellikle ilerleyen aþamalarýnda
protestocularýn uyguladýðý þiddet hiçbir þekilde kabul
edilemez. Hiçbir hak talebi, kamuya ait alanlar iþgal
edilerek, insanlara, çevreye ve kamu mallarýna zarar verilerek
elde edilemez.
benimsenmesi elzemdir.
• Gezi Parký olaylarý sonrasýnda toplum tarafýndan Baþbakan
Recep Tayyip Erdoðan’a gösterilen destek, desteðin
differences in lifestyle can be turned into violence
by some sections of society. In fact, during the
demonstrations the insults and attacks on women
wearing headscarves in particular overshadowed
the virtues of tolerance for differences and coexistence of the society.
• The violence implemented by the security forces in
the early days of the Gezi Park incidents is
unacceptable. Social demands should not be
suppressed by using violence, and the non-violent
social fluctuations not be regarded as security
weaknesses. In such cases, the task of the security
forces should be to ensure the safety of the society,
rather than interfering with the community.
• The violence of the protesters, especially in the later
stages of the Gezi Park incidents is totally
unacceptable. Any claim cannot be achieved by the
occupation of public areas and damage to people,
to the environment and to the public properties.
• Political elites who ruled the country are obliged to
understand the young generations, make sense of
them, and thus required to prepare the ground so
that the growth of healthy generations can be
possible.
• Those who have the country’s governance should
not be acting just relying on their voting, they should
seek the negotiation with the society in the
interventions. It should be noted that there are many
ways of establishing dialogues with the community
in our increasing communication opportunities.
• However, during the process of the events, the
negotiation speeches of Prime Minister Recep
Tayyip Erdogan, particularly, Deputy Prime
Minister Bulent Arinc, and Istanbul Governor
Huseyin Avni Mutlu with those delegations; their
explanations addressing to all sectors of the field
and carrying out consultations with delegations may
be cited as the gains of the process. This attitude
must become permanent and the adoption of such
an understanding of politics is essential.
• The support shown to Prime Minister Recep Tayyip
Erdogan by the community after the Gezi Park
incidents should be analyzed well by the counterparts
of the support. This given support should be
perceived as a stance against practices of global
system, rather than a support given to the
government's policies.
• The global system will continue to intervene to
Turkey on several occasions, too, after the Gezi
Park incidents. They will make it to their advantage,
not for the sake of our people. Therefore, it is clear
that Turkey will suffer from these processes. For
this reason, all sectors of society should act in a wise
manner and be awake to the operations of the global
system against our country.

they want more harmonious, more tractable Turkey. They
are also quite uncomfortable of Turkey’s acting according

another cause of this discomfort of Turkey,
