Last Week’s Meeting…
Our thanks to Lawrence and Maureen for providing notes of last Tuesday’s meeting, and to Brenda for providing photos.
We had a reasonable turnout, considering that some of our members are enjoying southern climes at this time of year. And we
had almost as many visitors as members.
The 14 members who were present were Marc, Lawrence, Maureen, Andy, Murray, Aytaç, Şehnaz, JP, Knud, Brenda,
Emily, Cameron, President Stewart and Joe Z.
We were also pleased to welcome 13 visitors: Antoinette d’Alesio of the Sabrina & Camillo D’Alesio Foundation; JP’s
daughter, Adèle; Fahmi Al Amad, guest of the club; the following four visitors, all guests of Aytaç: Omer Sudekan, Berna
Sudekan, Kadri Almaç and Dilek Almaç; as well as 6 members of the Güzelbahçe Interact Club, pictured below:
Brenda gave Antoinette D’Alesio of the Sabrina & Camillo D’Alesio Foundation our cheque for $500.
The Ace of Spades continued to elude us. Murray won the right to search for it but found the Ten of Clubs instead.
Stewart traded banners with Dilek Almaç, Secretary of the Teos Sakin Rotary Club, located in Narlidere, Izmir, Turkey. She also
brought gifts and gave us a lovely pictorial presentation about her club, the ancient city of Teos, and the activities her club
engages in. Although less than three years old, her club is involved in many projects, in-cluding food aid, rehabilitation for women
victims of violence, clothing and stationery for school, traffic education and a children’s park and RYLA. New projects for this year
include a Peace Crane Project, based on the Japanese story of the Origami Crane, the international symbol of Peace, as pictured
here.
The Güzelbahçe Interact Club was founded by Şehnaz’s previous Rotary club. They also brought gifts, including a ceramic bowl to
be raffled at our meeting. It was won by our guest and prospective member, Fahmi Al Amad.
Ayşe Akbeniz, Vice President of the Interact club, also had a PowerPoint presentation for us, depicting their many
accomplishments during the 2014-2015 Rotary year. Twenty-one members of their club hosted a summer camp for inter-national
exchange students from nine countries. They also visited seniors as part of a project on Alzheimer’s disease, orga-nized a bicycle
tour to raise awareness about Rotary and Interact in Güzelbahçe, and they organized a Peer Mediation Conference, to which they
invited two university professors.
President Stewart introduced our speaker, James O'Farrel, a volunteer fundraiser for the West Island Women's Shelter who has
taken the initiative to undertake a variety of improve-ments at the Shelter, including renovating the playground in the Shelter’s
back yard.
James told us he had learned about the West Island Women’s Shelter from one of his daughters who is a volunteer there. He said
he was aware that the Shelter was already a beneficiary of our club’s financial support and that it was not his intention to
minimize the value of that commitment. He did ensure us that if we could also help with the financing of the back yard
improvements, he would be grateful.
Using a very descriptive PowerPoint presentation, he gave us a lot of information about the Shelter--its mission, the services The
Lakeshorian for Tuesday, February 2 nd, 2016 Page 2
t offers, and an overview of the support given to 176 women and 162 children in the past year.
Elaborating on the 86 children who lived at the Shelter for a period of time during the year, he told us that, on average, there are
between 8 and 12 children, including babies, at the Shelter at any given time. The maximum number of children at once was 15.
In terms of age, 65% were between 3 and 13, with 20% under 3 and 15% between the ages of 14 and 16.
His next slide focused on the back yard of the Shelter as it is now. He described it as a peaceful area where the children can play
and interact with other children, mothers and staff.
However, there are some negative factors to consider as well. The equipment for children’s activities is outdated and, in some
cases, unsafe; does not meet the needs of all age groups, baby to teen; and offers minimal rest area for mothers.
With photos that illustrated the entire back yard, including a patio, children’s slides and swing set, James concluded that an
upgrade was badly needed.
Upgrade the back yard / playground area for the children: o With newer equipment – suitable for all age groups;
o Ensuring compliance with security standards;
o Including a rest area for mothers
Elements requested in the layout: o Garden space
o Basketball space – for teens
o Shade (e.g. : Gazebo (approximately 10’ x 10’ )
o Equipment : Swing
Play house
Educational activity wall
Sand box
Some examples of the type of playground equipment that meet current health and safety standards for children are pictured
here:
James introduced a budget for the program of improvements showing a projected total cost of about $50,000, but said that he
believed it could be done for about $35,000.
He said they hope to start building in the spring.
Cameron thanked him and wished them well with the pro-ject, adding that “something like this could be a consideration for our
club during the next Rotary year. It would depend on our budget.”
