ACI In Action dergimizin bu yeni sayısı ile tekrar sizlerle beraberiz. Bu vesileyle siz sevgili
öğrencilerimizle, velilerimizle, mezunlarımızla, dostlarımızla ve okulumuzu daha yakından
tanımak isteyenlerle ikinci dönem gerçekleştirdiğimiz etkinlik ve elde ettiğimiz başarıları
paylaşmak istiyoruz.

Her sene olduğu gibi, bu sene de okulumuzla ilgili bilgi almak isteyen öğrenci ve veliler
için düzenlediğimiz Tanıtım Toplantımız büyük rağbet gördü. Son birkaç yıldır bu toplantıya
bir mezunumuzu davet ediyor, katılımcıların ACI’yı, mezunumuzun ağzından dinlemesini
sağlıyoruz. Gelen mezunların vurguladığı nokta aynı: Çağımızın rekabet ortamında ACI sizi
bulunduğunuz üniversitede, çalışma hayatında, sosyal çevrede bir adım öne çıkarıyor… Peki,
yüzyılı aşkın zamandır ACI bunu nasıl başarıyor?
ACI bunu kendisini farklı kılan özellikleri ile başarıyor. Bu özelliklerin başında geleneksel
yapısını koruyarak çağdaşlaşması geliyor. Öğrencilerin öncelikle kendi kültürlerinin ve
dillerinin bilincinde olmaları isteniyor, bu temel üzerine uluslararası yaklaşım ve dünya
vatandaşlığı irdeleniyor. Güçlü ve sağlam akademik alt yapı, özenle seçilmiş akademik ve
sosyal etkinliklerle desteklenince ortaya harikalar çıkıyor. Gençlerimiz bilim dünyasındaki
son yeniliklerin ışığında eğitilirken, sorgulayan ve araştıran bireyler olarak yetiştiriliyor.
Özgürlüğü ve özgüveni sarsılmadan okulun havasına uyum gösteren öğrenciler mutlu
bireyler olarak başarıya koşuyorlar ve mezun olduktan sonra okullarına hizmet etmek için
yarışıyorlar….
Okulumuzun bu özelliklerinin toplumda, hatta kız ve erkek yurtlarımızın katkısı ile tüm
Türkiyede takdir edilmesinden büyük memnuniyet duyuyoruz. Son yıllarda gördüğümüz
büyük rağbet nedeniyle kontenjanımız artırıldı. Üstelik giriş puanları da önemli ölçüde
yükseldi. Yükselen başarı grafiğine ek olarak bu yıl SBS Türkiye Şampiyonunun okulumuzu
tercih etmiş olması, tüm ACI ailesini gururlandırdı. Herkesin ilgi odağı olan bu başarılı gencin
“neden ACI ?” sorusunu yanıtlarken okulda yapılan akademik çalışmalarla sosyal etkinliklerin
dengeli dağılımını vurgulaması okulumuzu ne kadar iyi tanıdığını göstermiyor mu?…
Bu bağlamda okulumuzun geçen yıldan bu yana sayısız ulusal ve uluslararası bilimsel,
kültürel ve sosyal etkinliğe sahne olmaya devam ettiğini bildirmek isteriz. TÜBİTAK
projelerimiz ödül kazanmış olup, matematik alanında uluslararası yarışmalarda okulumuz
bölgede ilk sıraya yerleşmiştir. MUN öğrencileri, Avrupa’da kazandıkları özel ödülle gurur
kaynağımız olmuşlardır. Genç Başarı Kulübünün geniş bir platformda gösterdiği başarılar,
müzik öğrencilerimizin yurt dışında sergiledikleri üstün performans bizleri mutlu etmiştir.
Spor takımlarımız şampiyonluklar kazanmış, büyük bir öğrenci grubu sosyal sorumluluk
projelerinde etkin bir şekilde çalışmıştır. Tiyatro ve film festivallerinde yaratıcılık ön plana
çıkmış, edebiyat ve felsefe alanında etkinlikler düzenlenmiş, Fransızca ve Almancada
uluslararası diplomalar elde edilmiştir. IB diplomasını almaya hak kazanan öğrenciler
göğsümüzü kabartmışlardır. Bu arada yüz onsekiz Lise 4 öğrencimizi geleceğe uğurlarken
yurtdışındaki seçkin üniversitelerden gelen kabuller ve üniversiteye giriş sınavlarında elde
edilen başarı, yüzümüzü güldürmüştür.
Mezunlarımızın geniş bir yelpazede yaratıcılıklarını sergiledikleri başarılı çalışmalarla
toplumda sivrilmelerini kıvançla izlemekteyiz…
Gelecek sene 135. yaşını kutlayacak sevgili okulumuza nice uzun, başarı dolu yıllar diliyor,
ilke ve inkılaplarını rehber edindiğimiz Yüce Atatürk’ün direktifleri yönünde fikri hür, vicdanı
hür nesiller yetiştirmenin kıvancıyla siz değerli okurlarımıza saygılarımızı sunuyoruz.
Dear Readers,
Here we are again with our latest issue of our magazine, ACI In Action. Through our magazine we
are able to share with you, our students, parents, graduates, friends and those who would like to get
to know our school better, all the events and successes we have had during the second term.
There was a lot of interest in our Open House, which is held every year, from students and parents
wishing to obtain more information about our school. For the last few years we have invited one of
our graduates to this meeting so that the participants can hear first hand about ACI. Each graduate
who is invited always emphasises one particular thing: in this age and competitive environment ACI
puts you one step ahead of everyone else whether it be in the university you attend, your workplace
or social circle. How does the one hundred plus year-old school achieve this?
ACI accomplishes this through the features which make it different to others. The most important of
these characteristics is that while maintaining its traditions, ACI also keeps itself contemporary. First,
it is required that the students are fully aware of their own culture and language and it is on this solid
base that students appraise an international approach to being a world citizen. A strong and sound
academic foundation, supported by well-chosen academic and social activities brings amazing
outcomes. Our students are educated via the latest developments in the world of knowledge and
hence become individuals who question and research. The students who adapt to the climate in the
school race towards success as happy individuals who have not had their independence and selfconfidence shaken and then, having graduated, compete to serve their school.
We value the appreciation of these characteristics of our school by the community at large and
acknowledge the role our girls’ and boys’ dormitories play in this. Since there has been an increase
in demand for places in our dormitories over the last few years we have increased the quota. There
has also been a significant increase in the entrance points. In addition to this ever increasing success
rate the whole of the ACI family is very proud that this year’s SBS Turkish champion has chosen our
school. When this young person was asked, “Why ACI?” the reply was that the school emphasises
a balance between academic and social activities. Doesn’t this show how well this young person
knows our school?
In this context we would like to point out that since last year our school has hosted many national
and international scientific, cultural and social events. We are proud that our TÜBİTAK project won
an award, that our school was placed first in its region in an international Maths competition and
that our MUN students received a special award from a conference in Europe. We are also very
happy that the Junior Achievement Club achieved success on a number of fronts and with our music
students who gave an incredible performance while abroad. Our sports’ teams won a number of
championships, whilst a large group of students worked hard on a social service project. Creativity
came to the fore in theatre and film festivals while events were organised in the fields of literature
and philosophy and international diplomas were gained by students of French and German. We
were made to feel very proud by the number of students who received their IB diplomas. We were
very pleased with the success shown in the university entrance exam by and the acceptances from
overseas universities for the 118 grade 12 students who graduated this year.
We are aware of the wide range of creativity displayed by our graduates and their individual
successes as they continue to distinguish themselves in the community.
Next year our school will celebrate its 135th year and we wish it many more years of achievements.
Following the charges of Atatürk through his guiding principles and transformations we will be
proud to nurture many more generations of students who have clear-consciences and are freethinking.

gerçekleşen geleneksel Ekin-Yazın
Etkinlikleri’nin onuncusunda
ACI yine birçok kültür ve sanat
etkinliğine ev sahipliği yaptı.
The tenth Culture and Literature
Events festival was hosted by
our school on the 22nd and 23rd of
March 2012.
Lise 3 TM ve Sosyal sınıflarının Şinasi’nin
“Şair Evlendirmesi” adlı oyununu sahneye
uyarlamaları, Hazırlık Tiyatroları, Lise ikinci
sınıfların “Devletin kalkınmasında eğitim mi,
yoksa ekonomi mi?”konulu münazaraları,
şiir dinletileri ve konuk şairimiz Yılmaz
Odabaşı ile yapılan söyleşi etkinliğimizi
renklendirdi.
İki gün süren etkinliğimiz 27 Mart Dünya
Tiyatrolar Günü adına sahnelenen “Batı
Yakasının Hikayesi” oyunu ile son buldu.
Romeo ve Juliet’in bir nevi modern
uyarlaması olan “Batı Yakasının Hikayesi”
ünlü bir müzikal olmasına rağmen ACI
öğrencileri bu ünlü eseri tiyatro tadına
bizlere sundular.
Oynadıkları karakterlerle bütünleşen
oyuncuların yüksek enerjisi, müzik ve
dansla birleşince ortaya çok etkileyici bir
performans çıktı. Rengarenk kostümler
ve etkili ışık efektleriyle zenginleşen oyun
izleyicilerden büyük alkış aldı.
The Grade 11 Turkish/Maths and Social
classes presented an adaptation of Şinasi’s
play “ Şair Evlendirmesi” (The Marrying Off
of a Poet) whilst the Prep Theater Groups
and Grade 10 students held debates on
“Does the progress of the State depend
more on education or the economy?”
Poetry readings and an interview with our
guest poet, Yılmaz Odabaşı, enlivened the
festival.
The two-day event was brought to a close
on March 27th –World Theater Day – with the
production West Side Story. This famous
musical, a kind of modern adaptation of
Romeo and Juliet, was presented by our
students in drama form.
The actors’ energy when combined with
music and dance resulted in an impressive
performance. The performance was added
to by the colorful costumes and effective
lighting and received loud applause from
the audience.

İzmir Amerikan Koleji 9. sınıf öğrencisi
Esin Akgül, Türkiye Atletizm Federasyonu
tarafından İstanbul’da yapılan Çoklu
Branşlar Türkiye Şampiyonası’nda
Yıldızlar kategorisinde pentatlonda
Türkiye birincisi olarak Türkiye rekoruna
imza attı.
Esin Akgül, a grade 9 student at the
American Collegiate Institute, came
first in the ‘Stars’ category of the
pentathlon in the Multi-Disciplines Turkish
Championship organised by the Turkish
Athletics Federation and held in Istanbul
where she also broke a Turkish record.

ACI 9. sınıf öğrencisi Esin Akgül, kazandığı
Pentatlon birinciliğinin ardından, daha
sonra İzmir’de yapılan Kapalı Salon
Yıldızlar Türkiye Şampiyonası’nda da 60
mt. engellide Türkiye üçüncüsü oldu.
İzmir Amerikan Koleji’ne 500 tam puan
alarak girmiş olan Esin, böylece akademik
başarısının yanısıra uzun yıllardır emek
verdiği spor dalında da iki büyük başarıya
imza atmış oldu.
Esin Akgül başarısını şu sözlerle açıkladı:
Atletizm pek çok alt branş içermesinden
dolayı hem çok yönlü, hem de oldukça
zor bir spordur. Haftanın her günü iki saat
yaptığım antremanlar, aslında kısa bir
süre olarak gözükse de çok fazla enerji
harcadığım için zorlu geçiyor. Türkiye
birincisi olduğum “pentatlon” branşı ,
atletizmin belli başlı branşlarını içerir.
Bu branşın amacı bir günde beş branşı
tamamlayarak en fazla puanı toplamaktır.
Pentatlon kapalı salon yarışları 60 metre
engelli koşu, yüksek atlama,gülle atma, uzun
atlamave 800 mt. koşuyu içerir.
Pentatlonun zorluklarına gelince, en
başta beş branşı tamamlamanız gerekiyor
olmasıdır. Bir zor yanı da herkesin bir günde
iki yarışı tamamlamakta zorlandığı bir sporu,
beşini aynı tempoda tamamlıyor olmanız.
Bu beş branşı da en iyi şekilde bitirebilmek
için yapılan antremanlar oldukça zordur.
Yarışmaya hazırlanmak için haftanın 2-3
günü çift antreman yapmam gerekiyordu.
Ama bu yüzden okulla ilgili çalışmalarımı
hiç aksatmadım. O gün ağır bir antreman
yapacaksam, dersi çok daha dikkatli
dinleyerek eksiklerimi kapattım. Böylece
derslerde zorlanmadım ve okuluma girerken
gösterdiğim başarıyı devam ettirdim.
Bundan sonraki hedefim açık salonda
yapılan 100 mt. engel yarışlarında daha iyi
bir derece almak ve heptatlonda başarılı
olmak...
Following her pentathlon championship
ACI student Esin Akgül entered the Stars
Indoor Turkish Championship, held in Izmir,
where she came third in Turkey in the 60
meter hurdles race. Esin, who entered the
American Collegiate with a score of 500
points in the entrance exam, has shown
great success both academically and in
the field of sport in which she has been
involved for many years.
Esin explained her success to us: “Since
athletics comprises of a number of
disciplines and is therefore a varied and
difficult branch of sport. I train for two hours
every day and while this may not seem very
much because I expand a great of energy it
is quite difficult. The pentathlon, in which I
came first, involves a number of disciplines
and is set up so that you must collect as
many points as you can by completing
five different areas in one day. In indoor
competitions the pentathlon is made up of
a 60 meter hurdles race, the high jump, the
shot put, the long jump and an 800 meter
race.
As for the the most difficult thing about the
Pentathlon, it has to be completing all five
disciplines. The next would be having to
complete two races in one day as well as
being consistent in all five disciplines. To
do this the training is very hard. I have to
do double training sessions on two or three
days a week. However, I have never let these
sessions interfere with my school work. On
the day I have a hard training session then
that day I listen extra carefully in class to
make up any deficiencies. This way I have
had no problems with classes and have
been able to maintain the performance I
showed when entering the school.
My next goal is to get a better result in the
100 meter hurdle race held indoors and to
be successful in the heptathlon.

Özel İzmir Amerikan Koleji ISTA
öğrencileri, Nisan ayında Lüksemburg’da
yapılan ISTA Festivali’ne katıldılar.
Festival, dördü Türkiye’den olmak üzere
8 okulun katılımıyla gerçekleştirildi.
ACI ISTA öğrencilerinden Tuna Kunt,
Lüksemburg izlenimlerini ve ACI’de
sahneledikleri Alice in Wonderland
deneyimlerini, ACI in Action için kaleme
aldı.
Tuna Kunt, one of our ISTA Club students,
shared the two great experiences she had
with the ISTA Club.
Nisan ayında 12 arkadaşımla birlikte ISTA
festivaline katılmak için Lüksemburg’a gittik.
Gitmeden önce Lüksemburg’un sadece
Avrupa’nın en küçük ama en zengin ülkesi
olduğunu biliyordum. Şu an ise neredeyse
bütün ülkeyi yürüyerek gezmiş biri olarak
tarihi, kültürü, dili, mimari ve doğal yapıları
ve insanları hakkında epeyce bilgiliyim. Şu
ana kadar gezdiğim en huzurlu ve sakin
ülkeydi. Arabaların yaya geçitlerinde yol
verdiği ve her yerin çok temiz olduğu bir
kültür bana biraz yabancı gelse de yaşam
tarzları beni çok etkiledi. Her yerde eski evler,
kaleler ve pembe çiçekli kiraz ağaçları vardı. Festivalde ise dördü Türkiye’den toplam 8
okulun katılımıyla 4 gün boyunca tiyatroyla
ilgili öğrendiklerimizi ve ülkeyi gezerek
gözlemlediklerimizi sergiledik. Ayrıca birçok
ulus ve kültürden arkadaşlar edindim ve
çok iyi vakit geçirdim. Umarım seneye bizim
okulumuzda yapılacak ISTA festivali de
benim katıldığım kadar güzel olur.
ALICE, ACI’DAYDI!
Her sene olduğu gibi bu sene de ISTA
öğrencileri çok güzel bir oyun sergiledik.
Tiyatro öğretmenleri ve IB tiyatro
öğrencilerinin de yardımlarıyla Alice
Harikalar Diyarında’yı başarıyla sahneledik.
Bilindiği gibi bu oyunun en zor tarafı
benzersiz karakterlerini yansıtmaktı. Renkli,
çılgın kostümler ve sahne tavanından
sarkan masa sandalyelerle oyunun izleyiciye
büyük keyif verdiğini düşünüyorum. Her
yıl olduğu gibi bu yıl da oyunu hazırlaması
çok yorucu ama çok eğlenceliydi. Uzun
saatler okulda kalıp sahneleri tekrar tekrar
yapmamız gerekti. Sonunda ne kadar harika
bir eser çıkacağını bildiğimizden hiç birimiz
yakınmadan üstümüze düşeni yaptık ve çok
renkli, heyecanlı ve komik bir oyun çıkardık.
Bir ACI öğrencisi olarak sahneye çıkmatan
çok hoşlanıyorum ve bunu ISTA gibi güzel bir
grupla yapmaktan gurur duyuyorum. Ayrıca
oynadığım ilginç karakterin de bana bilgi ve
teknik kattığını düşünüyorum. Her gösteriyle
bu konuda biraz daha gelişiyorum ve seneye
de böyle bir grupla çalışmak isterim.
In April, along with 12 friends, I went to
Luxembourg to attend ISTA. Before I went there
all I knew about Luxembourg is that it is the
smallest but richest country in Europe. Now
as someone who has walked just about all the
length and breadth of the country, I am much
more informed about the country’s history,
culture, language, architecture, natural beauties
and its people. So far of all the countries I have
been to it is the most quiet and peaceful place.
Even though having cars stop for you and
everywhere being spotlessly clean might be
a foreign concept for us, I was very impressed
by their life-style. Everywhere there were
old houses, castles and the pink blossom of
cherry trees. At the ISTA Festival there were a
total of eight schools, four of which were from
Turkey and during the four days of the festival
we learned a lot about theatre and showed
what we had learned about the places we had
visited. I had a great time and made friends
from other countries and cultures. I hope the
ISTA Festival which our school is to host next
year is as good as the one I attended.
Alice was in school!
Just like every year, this year, too, we, the ISTA
students, put on a very good play. With the
help of our drama teacher and the IB Theatre
students we performed Alice in Wonderland.
The most difficult part of putting on this familiar
play was to create different characters. I think
what we did with the colourful, crazy costumes
and the table and chairs suspended from the
ceiling really entertained the audience. The
preparation for the play was tiring but great
fun. We had to stay behind at school until quite
late rehearsing and re-rehearsing the scenes.
Since we knew in the end the play would be
fantastic, none of us complained and we did
what we were supposed to do. As an ACI
student I love being on the stage and I am
proud to perform with a great group of people
like ISTA. I also think that through the character
I played I learned a lot and developed my
technique. Each time I perform I improve and
look forward to working with a group like this
next year.

Merkezi’nde sahneledi.

Müzikalde, tüm Lise 1. Sınıf öğrencileri rol aldı. Daha önce İzmir Devlet Opera ve Balesi’nde
sahnelenen bu müzikalin mutfağında, geçmişte bu opera topluluğunda gitarist kadrosuyla
yer alan olan ACI müzik öğretmeni Alkan Günlü vardı.
Hair, Cabaret, Fiddler On The Roof, Cats, Phantom Of The Opera, Jesus Christ Superstar,
Madam Butterfly gibi 14 müzikalden 22 farklı şarkı içeren müzikalde, öğrenciler hem şarkı
söylediler, hem dans ettiler hem de kareografinin hazırlanmasında pay sahibi oldular. Ayrıca
sahne amirliği, ışık, ses ve dekor tasarımında da görev alarak, müzikali tam anlamıyla bir
öğrenci prodüksiyonu olarak sahneye koydular.
Geçen yıl müzik derslerinin yapısının değişmesinin de etkisiyle gerçekleştirilen bu
müzikalle, ACI’nın müzikal sahneleme geleneği de sürdürülmüş oldu.
I Love Broadway, ilk kez Ankara Devlet Opera ve Balesi tarafından sahnelenmiş, en
beğenilen müzikallerin en beğenilen şarkılarını biraraya getirmiş ve farklı bir metin
yazılarak, müzikal kültürünü aşılamaya yönelik hazırlanmıştı.
Müzikal provalarında bir çok öğrenci kendini fark etme fırsatı buldu. Ben şarkı söyleyemem
ya da ben dans edemem diyen öğrenciler aslında bunu nasıl da başarabildiklerini fark
ettiler. Bu başarılarının ardından Alkan Günlü’nün deyimiyle öğrencileri sahneye çıkarmak
değil, sahneden indirmek zor olabilir.
For years at this school there was a tradition of staging a musical every year. After I started
teaching at this school ten years ago we staged a different musical each year for five
years. Due to a change in the music lessons, it became possible to revive our tradition.
The musical we chose this year is I LOVE BROADWAY staged the first time in Turkey by the
Ankara State Opera and Ballet Company and is a compilation of all the favorite songs from
the most popular musicals. It has a specially written script aimed to imbue an interest in
musicals. Later, it was staged by the Izmir State Opera and Ballet by a part of the company
to which I belonged as the guitarist. In the following years it was then put on stage by the
Istanbul State Opera and Ballet.
The musical comprises of 22 songs selected from 14 musicals such as; Hair, Cabaret,
Fiddler on the Roof, Cats, Phantom of the Opera and Jesus Christ Superstar. Since I LOVE
BROADWAY provided us with such a wide variety of material we were able to involve the
whole grade 9, a total of 156 students. The students, sang, danced and helped with the
choreography and since students were also involved in stage management, lighting and
sound and the set, the whole production was student led.
Through this we were able to give all the students the experience of being on stage.
During the rehearsals students became aware of talents they had and those who initially
had said they could not dance or sing found that they were able to succeed.
Consequently, by being introduced to the stage at such an early stage in their lives those
students whom I had difficulty getting onto the stage at the beginning are the ones who
have got a taste for the stage and wıll be difficult to keep away in the future.

Bu yıl açılan “ACI Çikolata Kulübü”nün
10 öğrencisi, öğretmenleri Banu Güran
liderliğinde el yapımı butik çikolataları
bizler için büyük bir zevk ve yaratıcılıkla
hazırlıyor. Her hafta yeni denemeler ve
farklı sunumlarla, bir tutku olan çikolatayı
sevdiriyorlar. Öyle ki herkes heyecanla
çikolataların satılacağı öğle tenefüsünü
bekliyor. ACI Çikolota Kulübü, çikolatayla
harikalar yaratmak isteyenleri Çarşamba
günleri kulüp saatinde Parsons Binası’nda
bekliyor.
A new extra-curricular activity, added to
the selection this year, is the ACI Chocolate
Club. Its ten student members and their
sponsor teacher, Banu Guran, are taking
great pleasure in using their creativity to
make handmade chocolates for us. The new
creations each week make us even greater
chocolate lovers. Consequently, every one
waits eagerly for the club’s lunch time sales.
If you would like to create wonders with
chocolate then join us in the Parsons
building at club time on Wednesdays.

Azteklerden günümüze gelen çikolata
bilinenin aksine çok faydalı. Vücut
ısısında eriyen tek yiyecek maddesi
olan çikolata damar tıkanıklığı yapıyor.
İçindeki antioksidanlar nedeniyle kanserle
mücadelede faydalı. Çikolata aynı zamanda
güçlü bir kalsiyum kaynağıdır kemiklerimize
iyi gelir. Harvard Tıp Akademisi uzmanları
kakaonun yüksek tansiyonu düşürdüğü
bilgisini savunuyorlar. Kaliforniya
Üniversitesi profesörleri ise her gün az
miktarda tüketilen çikolatanın kanda
pıhtılaşmayı önlediğini ve böylece kalp krizi
riskini azalttığını söylüyorlar. Aztek kralları
günde 50 bardak sıcak çikolata içerlermiş
ve en değerli misafirlerine ikram ederlermiş.
Sadece kokusuyla bile mutluluk hormonu
endorfini harekete geçiren çikolatayı siz de
yanınızdan eksik etmeyin.
Some little-known facts about
chocolate:
Contrary to popular belief, chocolate is
actually very beneficial to the body. It is the
only food which melts a body temperature
and therefore does not clog the arteries.
The anti-toxidants it contains help in the
fight against cancer. Chocolate is also an
excellent source of calcium so is good for
our bones. Experts at Harvard Medical
Faculty claim that cocoa helps reduce high
blood pressure. Professors at the University
of California believe if a small amount
of chocolate is comsumed every day it
prevents blood clots and therefore, reduces
the risk of heart disease.
The Aztec Kings supposedly drank 50 cups
of hot chocolate every day and served it
to their most important guests. Even the
smell of chocolate is enough to stimulate
the production of the ‘happiness’ hormone,
endorphin. So,do not go anywhere without
some chocolate!

Şili’li Üniversite profesörü, dil bilimci, pedagog, İspanyolca’da holistik eğitim uygulayıcısı
olan Dr. Hildegard Morales dünyanın her yerinde gençlerle konferanslara konuşmacı olarak
katılıyor.
Dr. Hidegard Morales gönüllü öğretmenlik yaparak dünyayı dolaşmasının dördüncü yılında
Türkiye’deydi. Şili’de yaşayan Morales, mezun olduğu Tarapaca Üniversitesi ile bağlantılarını
sürdürüyor ve Amerikalı üniversite öğrencilerine yönelik Yoğun İspanyolca programını
koordine ediyor. Ayrıca, gençliğinde Fulbright bursu alarak Yabancı Dil olarak İngilizce ve
İspanyolca Öğretmenliği alanında lisans üstü eğitimini aldığı Nothern Iowa Üniversitesi ile
bağlantıları da sürüyor.
Pek çok okulu ziyaret ederek öğrenciler ve öğretmenlerle konuşan Morales, onlara hayattaki
amaçlarımıza yönelik hayal kurmanın ve o doğrultuda azimle ilerlemenin, hayata olumlu
yaklaşmanın önemini anlatıyor. Kendisini “Bütüncül Eğitim” alanına yakın hisseden Morales,
İstanbul ve İzmir’e gelmesini, Türk kültürü ile tanışmasını sağlayan herkese de şükranlarını
sunduğunu söylüyor.
Bu gezinin en güzel yanının, gelirken sadece Üsküdar Amerikan Lisesi’nin İspanyolca
öğretmeni Michael Geneser’i tanıyorken şimdi Türk, Amerikalı, öğretmen, idareci, öğrenci pek
çok muhteşem arkadaşla ülkemizden ayrılması olduğunu söylüyor. Bu seyahatin kendisine
“küresel bir nimet” olduğunu da belirtmeden geçemiyor.
Türkiye’de edindiği deneyimi de Şili’dekilerle paylaşacağını, amacının önyargılardan uzak
karşılıklı anlayışa hizmet etmek olduğunu da ifade eden Morales, bunun bir Fulbright’lı olarak
Fulbright misyonunun bir parçası olduğunu da söylüyor.
Dr. Hildegard Morales is a professor at a university in Chile and a grammarian, pedagogue
and linguist as well as being a practitioner of holistic education. She travels all over the world
speaking at conferences and to groups of students.
Professor Hildegard Morales visited Turkey in her fourth year of voluntary teaching around the
world. She lives in Chile, her homeland, and she has close ties to her Alma Mater, Universidad
de Tarapaca, where she coordinates an intensive Spanish program for American college
students. She also has connections with the University of Northern Iowa where Fulbright
awarded her with a scholarship to pursue graduate studies in Teaching English and Spanish as
Foreign Languages. Her doctoral studies are centered in Education.
Professor Morales has visited many schools where she has talked with teachers and students
about the importance to ‘Dream to Persevere’ when it comes to objectives in life and to be
positive in a world that brings so much stress to all of us. Her approach to holistic education
has been received warmly. She thanks all those involved in bringing her to Istanbul and Izmir
and encourages them to become immersed in the Turkish culture as well.
What was best this trip for her? For her to come to Turkey knowing one person; her friend,
Michael Geneser, a Spanish teacher in Uskudar American Academy and now, today, to feel
she will leave Turkey with many wonderful friends; Turkish and American students, teachers
and administrators. She summarizes this trip as a “Global blessing”
As part of her Fullbright mission as a Fullbrighter, she is planning on sharing her experience in
Chile and promoting more mutual understanding beyond stereotypes that for certaın exist in
both realities.
Dr. Morales said, “One teacher told me yesterday that her students were already using some
of the values I emphasized in my talks. I think the student said something like: Now I BELIEVE!! How powerful!

ACI Prep students perform a wonderful finale to their Prep year
Opera ve Çok Sesli Koro Kulübü öğrencilerinin de katılımıyla zenginleşen 80 kişilik dev
müzik korosu, öğretmenleri Çağrı Düzalan’ın yönetiminde, geniş bir repertuvar sergiledi.
Okul marşları ve opera müziklerinden örnekler sunan koro, değişik kültürlerden şarkılara da
yer verdi. Yatılı piyano kursu öğrencilerinin kısa piyano resitali, bale figürleriyle renklendi.
Öğrencilerin müzik ziyafeti, zengin içeriğiyle izleyiciler tarafından büyük beğeni ile izlendi.
Hazırlık öğrencilerinin resim çalişmaları da fuayede yer aldı. Okul yönetimi, dört yıldır büyük
bir istek ve özveri ile gerçekleşen bu etkinliğin öğrencilerin sosyal ve kültürel gelişimlerini
arttırmasına yardımcı olduğunu ifade etti ve emeği geçenlere teşekkür etti. The 80 strong Opera and Polyphonic Choir Club performed a varied programme under the
leadership of their music teacher, Çağrı Düzalan. The choir performed the school marches,
selections from operas as well as songs from different cultures. The piano course students
from the boarding department gave a short piano recital which was enhanced by some
ballet. The captivated audience were impressed by the wide variety of musical pieces
performed.
The Prep students’ art work was displayed in the foyer of Blake Auditorium. The school
administration stated that this event, organised for each of the last four years, help
propagate the students’ social and cultural development and thanked all those involved for
their hard work and dedication in organising the evening.

Mutafoğlu, “DI VISION” isimli filmleriyle
Challenge C kategorisinin birincisi oldular.
“Turning Tables” isimli takımın, yarışmaya
katıldığı DI-VISION adlı filmi, bir dans
yarışmasını ve iki farklı kültürden iki genç
kızın arkadaşlığını konu ediyordu. Rus ve
Japon kültürlerinin etkileşimini içeren filmde
öğrencilerin amacı bir film fragmanını
canlandırmak ve buna orjinal soundtrack
bestelemekti. Uzun bir çalışma döneminden
sonra katıldıkları turnuvada yaratıcılık ve
hayal güçleri ile elde ettikleri başarı İzmir
Amerikan Koleji öğrencilerini çok mutlu etti.

uyumlarını arttırmalarını amaçlamaktadır.
Öğrencilerimiz ilk defa katıldığımız bu ilk
turnuvada yaratıcılıkları ve hayal güçleri
sayesinde böylesine güzel bir sonuç aldılar.
Onlarla gurur duyuyoruz. Takımımız bu
sonuçla, Robert Koleji’nde yapılan İstanbul,
DI Avrasya Turnuvasına katılmaya hak
kazandı” dediler.

teachers, Pınar Ünver and Gülşen Sokullu
Köseler, came first in the Challenge C
category in the section of histronic theater
with their film “DI- VISION”.
The group, who named themselves
“Turning Tables”, entered the tournament
with their film which centers round a dance
competition and the friendship between
two young girls from different cultures.
The film examines how the Russian and
Japanese cultures affect each other. The
students planned to act out a fragment
of the film and compose an original
soundtrack for it. After such a long period
of working on the project the students were
very happy with their success – a result of
creativity and imagination.
The two coaches, Pınar Ünver and Gülşen
Sokullu Köseler , were very pleased with
the students’ achievement . They said that
aim of the Destination Imagination Club,
newly formed this year, was to develop
the student members’ creativity, to learn
to solve spontaneous problems and learn
to work as a team. “We are very proud of
them and because of the result our team
has earned the right to take part in the
DI European Tournament to be hosted in
Istanbul by Robert College”.

seyrederken, muhteşem Türkçesi ile
akıcı konuşmasını dinlerken, her soruyu
dikkatlice dinleyip yanıtlarken görseniz

Biz gördük, dinledik… inanamadık…
20 Haziran 1914’te doğmuş, Bursa’da
büyümüş ünlü Sümerolog. Özel bir
okulda Fransızca ve keman dersleri almış.
Öğrencilerimizin kitaplarda okuduğu
Birinci Dünya Savaşı yıllarını, Kurtuluş
Savaşı’nı görmüş bir bilim insanı…1926
yılında, devrimlerin yaşandığı süreçte
sınavla Bursa Kız Muallim Mektebi’ne
girmiş ve 1931 yılında mezun olmuş.
Öğretmenlik mesleğini yapmış ve 1935’te
Ankara Üniversitesi Dil Tarih ve Coğrafya
Fakültesi Sümeroloji Bölümü’ne girmiş.
Ailesinin, uzakta okumasına nasıl izin
verdiğini sorduk, gülümsedi… Aydın bir
ailesi olduğunu, onların büyük desteğini
aldığını dile getirdi ve kız çocuklarının
mutlaka okuması gerektiğini, Türkiye
Cumhuriyeti’nin yükselmesinde bunun çok
önemli olduğunu aktardı.
As we looked into her twinkling eyes and
noticed how straight she held herself, as
we listened to her superb Turkish spoken
so fluently, and then how she listened
so carefully to each question and then
answered, we could not believe that she
was born in 1914. We looked . . . we listened
. . . we could not believe it. . . This famous
Assyriologist was born on June 20th, 1914
and grew up in Bursa. She took French
and violin lessons at a private school. She
lived through World War I and the War of
Independence which we have only read
about in books. In 1926 during the reforms,
she passed the entrance exam for the Bursa
Girls’ Teachers’ Training School, graduating
in 1931. She worked as a teacher until
1935 when she began studying in Ankara
University Faculty of Language, History and
Geography, Department of Assyriology. She
was asked how her parents had agreed to
her studying away from home - to which she
smiled. She explained she had a very openminded family who were totally supportive of

Üniversiteyi 1940 yılında bitiren Çığ,
İstanbul Arkeoloji Müdürlüğü’ne atanmış.
Burada 31 yıl boyunca meslektaşı Hatice
Kızılay ve Dr. F. R. Kraus ile müzenin
deposunda bulunan Sümer, Akad ve Hitit
dillerinde yazılmış 74 bin tableti okumuş ve
arşiv oluşturmuş. Üç bin tabletin kopyasını
yapıp katolog halinde yayımlatmış.
Öğrencilerimiz ona çivi yazısının nasıl
çözüldüğünü sordu ve uzun uzun Pers
kitabelerinden, Akad çivi yazılarının
çözümünden bahsetti. Karşılaştırmalı
yöntemlerle çözüldüğünü anlattı. “Biz
uğraşsak okuyabilir miyiz?” dedik, çok
çalışmamız gerektiğini, uzun bir süreçte
okuyabileceğimizi söyledi.
Söyleşimiz sırasında Muazzez Hanım’ın
Hitit dilini de çok iyi bildiğini öğrendik.
1965’te Roma’da sergilenen Hitit sergisini
Londra’ya götürdüğünü öğrendik. Hitit
ve Sümer kültürüyle ilgili 13 kitap yazmış
ve bunlardan bir tanesi de çocuklar için
yazılmış “Zaman Tüneliyle Sümerler’e
Yolculuk” kitabıydı. Tarihin çocuklara
sevdirilmesi ve doğru anlatılmasının, kültür
birikimi açısından çok önemli olduğunu
belirtti.
Muazzez İlmiye Çığ bizlere Sümer
kültüründen örnekler verdi ve okuduğu
tabletlerde çok ilginç bilgilere rastladığını
belirtti. Kadınlara Sümer kültüründe değer
verildiğini, birçok hakka sahip olduklarını
aktardı. Hatta kadınların meyhane açma
yetkisine dahi sahip olduğunu ve mülkleri
kızlarına devredebildiklerini anlattı. Bugün
kullanılan bazı sözcüklerin Sümerce’ de
var olduğunu, ona Anadolu’nun birçok

öğütledi. Kitaplarını imzaladı, elimizi tuttu,
gözümüzün içine derin derin baktı. Herkese
“birey” gözü ile baktı, önemsedi. Biz bir
bilim insanı nasıl olurmuş onu gördük ve
ondan öğreneceğimiz çok şey olduğunu
anladık. Bilgi sahibi olmadan bilinç sahibi
olamayacağımızı hatırlattı bize… Atatürkçü
Türk gençleri olarak tüm dünyada tanınan,
bilime büyük katkıları bulunan bir bilim
insanı ile tanışmanın gururunu yaşadık…
Biz ona dokunduk, o bizim aklımıza,
yüreğimize dokundu…
Biz onu çok sevdik…

She also believes that this is very important
for the development of the Turkish Republic.
After graduating from university in 1940,
Muazzez Hanım was appointed to the
Istanbul Directorate of Archaeology. She
spent 31 years here with her colleagues,
Hatice Kızılay and Dr. F.R. Kraus deciphering
the 74,000 Sumerian, Acadian and Hittite
tablets stored in the repository and then
archiving them. She copied 3,000 tablets
and published them in a catalogue. Our
students asked her how she deciphered
the cuneiform writing and she spoke at
length about the deciphering of the Persian
inscriptions and the Arcadian cuneiform
writing. She explained how they were used
to compare to the Sumerian cuneiform
writing so leading to it being deciphered.
We, of course, asked if it would be possible
for us to read them to which she answered,
“Only after a lot of study and in the course of
time”.
During this interview we learned that
Muazzez Hanım know the Hittite language
very well. She took the Hittite exhibition,
displayed in Rome in 1965, to London. She
has written 13 books about the Hittite and
Sumerian cultures and one of these books;
“Travelling back to the Sumerians through
the Time Tunnel” was written especially for
children. She pointed out that history needs
to be explained well to children so that they
develop a love for the subject and this is
very important in developing their cultural
awareness.
Muazzez İlmiye Çığ gave us examples of
the Sumerian culture and told us she came
across some very interesting information in
the tablets she read. The Sumerian culture
valued women and gave them many rights.
They were even allowed to open taverns and
to bequeath their property and possessions
to their daughters. Some words we use today
come from the Sumerian language.
She never grew tired of our questions. She
recommended us, as an intellectual of the
era of the Republic, to keep to the principles
of Atatürk and to protect human rights. She
signed books, shook hands and met us in the
eye. She treated everyone as an individual.
We learned what a true scholar should be
and understood how much we could learn
from her. She reminded us that we cannot
acquire knowledge without being inquisitive.
We are honoured to have met such a worldrenowned scholar who has had such an
impact on her field of study.
We shook her hand and she touched our
minds and hearts. We fell in love with her.

23 Nisan Ulusal Egemenlik ve Çocuk
Bayramı’nı kutlamak amacıyla ACI’da
düzenlenen etkinlikler, günün anlamını
çok güzel bir şekilde öğrencilere yansıttı.
Hazırlanan programda zor bir dönemde bin
bir güçlükle kurulan Türkiye Büyük Millet
Meclisi’nin tarihini, dönemin insanlarını
canlandıran öğrencileriden dinlemek
ulusal egemenlik kavramının önemini bize
bir kez daha hatırlattı. Törene başlarken
Tülay Aktaş İşitme Engelliler İlköğretim
Okulu öğrencilerinin İstiklal Marşı’nı işaret
diliyle söylemeleri ve programın sonunda
sergiledikleri halk oyunları gösterisi oldukça
ilgi çekici ve etkileyiciydi. Kısaca ifade etmek
gerekirse 23 Nisan’da çok çarpıcı ve çeşitli
değerlerin anımsatıldığı bir kutlama yapıldı.
ACI Beden Eğitimi Bölümü’nce hazırlanan
19 Mayıs Atatürk’ü Anma, Gençlik ve
Spor Bayramı programı da bir o kadar
coşkuluydu. ACI’nın Müdürlerinin ve
Beden Eğitimi Bölümü’nün en genç üyesi
Merve Hanım’ın yaptığı konuşma günün
önemini özetliyordu. Spor ödüllerinin
dağıtıldığı törende neredeyse tüm okul
sahnedeydi. Atatürk’ün spora verdiği önem
düşünüldüğünde, okulun Ulu Önder’in
izinden gittiği, öğrencilerin aldığı ödüllerle
kanıtlanmış oldu. Ödüller verilirken aralarda
çeşitli dansların sergilenmesi, bayram
coşkusunu artırdı.
The activities organised for the purpose
of celebrating the 23rd April National
Sovereignty and Children’s Holiday really
brought across the true meaning of this
day to us. The June programme mirrored
the many difficulties suffered by those
who founded the first Turkish National
Assembly. By listening to the students
who portrayed people of that time and
brought to life the historical period we were
reminded once again of the importance of
the concept of National Sovereignty.The
ceremony opened with the students from
the Tülay Aktaş Elementary School for the
Hearing –Impaired signing the National
Anthem and they performed folk dances
at the end of the ceremony. Our students
were captivated and impressed by these.
In short, this year’s 23rd April Ceremony was
striking and one which reminded us of a
number of values.
The same can be said for the 19th May
Remembrance of Atatürk and Youth and
Sports’ Holiday, which was organised by
the Department of Physical Education. The
importance of the day was summed up by
our principals and the youngest member
of the PE department, Merve Hanım. The
sports’ awards were distributed at this
ceremony which meant most of the school
was up on stage. If we consider how much
importance Atatürk gave to sport then the
awards won by our students support the
fact that our school is following in the steps
of Atatürk. Our exuberance at the ceremony
was increased by some dance displays
performed between the presentations of
the awards.

İzmir Amerikan Koleji, Model Birleşmiş
Milletler kulübüyle bir konferansa katılmanın
birçok güzel yanı var. Asıl amacı, üyelerine
genel kültür, geniş ve küresel bir vizyon
kazandırmak olan kulüp, bunu sadece
katılınan konferanslar aracılığıyla yapmıyor.
Konferans dışında, bizlere, yani öğrencilere,
kulüp öğretmenlerimizin kattığı Avrupa ve
dünya tarihi hakkında kültür ve bilgilerle,
bu gezinin eğitici anlamı farklı yönleriyle
vurgulanıyor.
Genellikle Ocak ayının son haftasında
gerçekleşen yüksek tempolu fakat bir o
kadar da eğlenceli THIMUN konferansından
sonra, ACI MUN kulübü olarak geleneğimiz,
konferansın sonunda gezimize bir gün
daha ekleyerek, Lahey’den Amsterdam’a
geçmek. THIMUN 2012 konferansının
sonunda da, bu geleneği bozmayıp hepimiz,
Didem Erpulat’ın liderliğinde Lahey tren
istasyonundan, Amsterdam Centraal tren
istasyonuna doğru yola koyulduk. İstasyonun
çıkışına yürüyünce şehrin gözüme ilk çarpan
özelliği kanalları oldu. Didem Hanım bize
Amsterdam’a Kuzey Avrupa’nın ikinci
Venedik’i adının yakıştırıldığını söyledi.

Amsterdam’ı gezmeye başladık. ACI MUN

There are a number of good reasons for
ACI’s Model United Nations Club to attend
a conference. The primary objective of the
club is for its members to gain a broad and
global vision while increasing their general
knowledge. This is not achieved by attending
just one conference. Our sponsor teachers, as
well as teaching us about European and World
history also give us information about the
cultures of those places, therefore underlining
the different educational aspects of this trip.
The THMUN Conference is generally held
in the last week of January. The pace of
the conference is fast but fun. Traditionally
the group stays one extra day at the end of
the conference, moving from Lahey, where
the conference is held, to Amsterdam. We
continued this tradition and with Didem Hanım
travelled to Amsterdam Centraal train station
from Lahey. On leaving the train station the first
things to catch my eye were the canals. Didem
Hanım told us that Amsterdam deserved the
name of ‘The Second Venice’ of Northern
Europe. So, we began touring Amsterdam
with its canals and tall, narrow buildings. One
of the rules of any MUN club trip is that the
participants should visit at least one museum in
any city they are in. We decided, therefore, to
visit the Anne Frank Museum. After wandering

saptıktan sonra Prinsengracht nehrine bakan
Anne Frank’in evine ulaştık.
Anne Frank müzesi önünde metrelerce
uzanan kuyruğuyla meşhurdu fakat biz
erkenci davranıp, açılış saatinde müzeye
geldiğimiz için bunun gibi bir problemle
karşılaşmadık ve hızlıca biletimizi alıp içeri
girdik. Hazırlık yıllı İngilizce dersimizde
hepimiz Anne Frank’in Günlüğünü
okuduğumuz için müzenin tarihi ile aşınaydık.
Otto Frank 1940 yılında baharat yapımı
işini Amsterdam’ın Singel kanalına yakın
kısmından buraya taşımıştı. Daha sonra, İkinci
Dünya Savaşı ve Hollanda’nın Nazi işgalleri
tüm hızıyla sürerken sadık çalışanları Miep
ve Victor Kugler’in yardımlarıyla burası hem
iş yeri hem de Frank ailesi ve aile arkadaşları
için bir saklanma mekânı olmuştu. Bu yapı
bir bina ve binanın içinde saklı olan, dar,
diğer bir binadan oluşuyordu. “ The Secret
Annex” olarak adlandırılan bu diğer binanın
girişi küçük bir kitaplıkla saklanıyordu.
Kitaplığın oluşturduğu dar girişten geçip, dik
bir merdivenle karşılaşınca, açıkçası, yaşam
koşulları daha ne kadar kötü olabilir diye
düşünüyordum fakat bu daha başlangıçtı.

Normally there are very long queues outside
the museum but we avoided this by being
there early ready for the opening time. We
had all read The Diary of Anne Frank in our
Prep year so we were familiar with the history.
In 1940, Otto Frank had moved to this house
from the Singel Canal in Amsterdam in order
to continue his business in the production
of spices. Later after the beginning of World
War II and during the full throes of the Nazi
invasion this house became where they
continued their business and the hiding
place of the Frank family and friends with
the help of their loyal workers, Miep and
Viktor Kugler. The place where they hid,
known as ‘The Secret Annexe’, was located
in the next building and accessed through
a door cleverly disguised as a bookcase.
When I squashed myself through that narrow
entrance and came to the steep staircase,
I thought how difficult life must have been
for them. But this was only the beginning.

mobilya yoktu çünkü Otto Frank mobilya

gösteren bir başka video odası. Anne Frank,
Nazi Soykırımında ölen yaklaşık 6 milyon
insandan sadece biriydi fakat bu bir hikâye
geri kalan milyonların acısını yansıtıyor ve
Amsterdam’ın Prinsengracht sokağında
olanların unutulmaması için ziyaretçilerini
bekliyordu.
Çok üzücü fakat bir o kadar da öğretici bir
geziydi. Dışarı çıkan tüm insanların kaşlarının
hafiften çatık olduğunu gözlemledim. Bu
küçük ev, taşıdığı sembolik anlam ile tüm
ziyaretçilerini etkilemiş ve geleceğe yönelik
bir mesaj vermişti, “ Unutmayacağız.”
of the building. There were no windows so they
lived in the dark afraid to turn on any lights. I
had goose bumps as I remembered reading
her diary and learning that despite the living
conditions, Anne Frank remained full of hope
and had plans for the future. The darkness she
lived in could not extinguish the light inside her.
The walls of Anne’s room were covered with film
posters and pages from magazines. The reason
she did this was to make living there more
bearable. There was no furniture in the museum
as Otto Frank had not wanted there to be, but
on the walls were excerpts from Anne’s diary,
some photographs and small screens showing
videos. The video which affected me most was
of Otto Frank speaking about his daughter.
The eight people hiding here were betrayed
and denounced to the authorities. All eight
were taken to different concentration camps
and only Otto survived and he helped in
the opening of this museum in 1960. It was
heartrending to hear a grieving father talk
about the loss of his family. Towards the exit,
next to the cafeteria, is a room which displays
the family tree of Edith Frank and has a video
room which shows all the racist acts committed
from the past until today. Anne Frank was only
one of the six million people who died as a
result of the genocide carried out by the Nazis.
However, her story reflects the suffering of the
others and Prinsengracht Street in Amsterdam
is waiting for visitors who will make sure this
horror is never forgotten.
While being a very sobering trip it was also a
very educational one. I saw that all the people
who left the museum were frowning. This small
house had had an effect on all its visitors and
was giving a message for the future: “We shall
not forget”.

AN EXHIBITION FROM OUR IB
STUDENTS
Özel İzmir Amerikan Koleji Uluslararası Bakalorya
(IB) Programı öğrencileri Cansu Uslu, Simla Usmen,
Yağmur Yörük ve İdil Özer, IB diploması alabilmek
için Görsel Sanatlar Dersinde yaptıkları çalışmaları
içeren bir sergi açtılar.
In order for the International Baccalaureate (IB)
Visual Arts students to gain their diplomas they
have to put on an exhibition of their work. The
students were; Cansu Uslu, Simla Usmen, Yağmur
Yörük and Idil Özer.
Uluslararası Bakalorya (IB) Programı gereği,
seçmeli olarak aldıkları Görsel Sanatlar
dersinde işledikleri konularla ilgili iki senelik
emeklerini içeren bir sergi açan öğrenciler,
öncelikle çalışmalarını yapılan toplantılarda
tüm diğer öğrencilere detaylarıyla anlattılar.
Arkadaşlarını bu konuları neden seçtikleri
ve sergiye nasıl hazırlandıkları ile ilgili
bilgilendiren öğrenciler, daha sonraki
aşamada Uluslararası IB Organizasyonu
tarafından görevlendirilen bir yetkiliye sunum
yaptılar.
İzmir Amerikan Koleji Görsel Sanatlar
Öğretmeni Deniz Ayhan Egeli, öğrencilerin
yoğun bir çalışma döneminden geçtiklerini
söyledi ve onları emeklerinden dolayı kutladı.
Egeli, öğrencilerin IB diploması almak için
gerekli olan bu sergiden başarılı notlar alarak
geçeceklerini düşündüğünü ifade etti.
The exhibition includes the work they have
produced over the two-year elective course
and is preceded by a meeting where each
student must explain in detail to the rest
of the students what their work is about. In
this presentation each student explains why
she chose that particular subject to explore
in her work and how she has prepared
for the exhibition. Following this each
student gives a presentation to a moderator
appointed by the IB Organisation.
The ACI Visual Arts teacher, Deniz
Ayhan Egeli, explained what a difficult
and intensive time the students had
experienced and congratulated them
on the results. Ms. Egeli is sure that the
students will get the grades they deserve
from this exhibition, a requirement of the IB
programme.

Discovering American Universities
for Ourselves
Özel İzmir Amerikan Koleji öğrencilerinden dokuz kişilik bir grup, 7 - 14 Nisan tarihleri arasında bir ilke
imza attı ve Amerika Üniversiteleri Gezisi yaptı. ACI’lılar yedi günlük gezi süresince üç eyaletteki 15
üniversiteyi ziyaret etti ve önemli bir deneyim kazandı. Bu geziyi ACI in Action için Elif Fotocan kaleme aldı.
A group of nine ACI students visited American universities from 7th-14th April. During their seven-day stay,
the students visited 15 universities in three states. Elif Fotocan wrote about the trip for ACI in Action.

One of the main benefits of
such a trip is that it gives us
memories that we can look back
and relive. The ‘in’ jokes that we
shared are all part of this.

Gelenekselleşmesini umduğum ve ilki
7 – 14 Nisan tarihlerinde yapılan Amerika
Üniversiteleri Gezisi’ni gerçekleştiren dokuz
öğrenci arasında arasında ben de vardım.
Bir önceki hayatında New Yorklu olduğunu
iddia eden Didem Hanım ve “Türklerin
yavaş hareket ettiğini söyleyen” bir grupla
uğraşmak zorunda kalan dakik Yurt Dışı
Üniversiteler Danışmanı Ms. Victoria’nın
işbirliği ve çabaları sayesinde gerçekleşen bu
gezi bence - eminim ki diğer sekiz öğrenci
de bana katılacaktır - büyük bir başarıyla
sonuçlandı. Yedi günde pek çok kişinin
başaramayacağını başarıp 3 eyaletteki
I was one of the nine students who
participated in the trip to visit some
American universities from 7th – 14th April.
My personal wish is that this trip takes
place every year. It was made possible by
the efforts and collaboration of the school
College Counselor, Ms. Victoria, who had
to deal with Didem Hanım who claims to
have been a New Yorker in a former life
and us - a group of laid back and slowmoving Turkish students. Despite all this, I
can say that the trip, and I am sure the other
members of the group would agree, was a
resounding success. In those seven days we

Columbia gibi önemli ve adını daha sık
duyduğumuz üniversitelerin yanı sıra Bentley,
Tufts, Northeastern gibi önemli pek çok
üniversite de turumuza dahildi.
Adnan Menderes Havaalanı’nı boydan boya
koşarak başlayan yolculuğumuzun, aynı
havaalanında yorucu bir haftanın sonunda
herkesin bavullarını almayı beklerken bir
köşede oturmasıyla son bulması kimseyi
şaşırtmamış olsa gerek. Ayrıca Amerikalıların
kutladıkları özel günlerinden birinde
orada bulunmak da bizim şansımıza oldu.
Onların “Easter”, bizim “Paskalya” dediğimiz
bayramlarında tüm okullar tatil olduğundan,
biz de Paskalya Bayramı’nı New York City’yi
talan ederek geçirdik. Üzerinde paskalya
yumurtası, meyve sepeti, havuçlar veya
değişik hayvanlar bulunan şapkalar giyerek
sokaklara dökülmüş New York halkının
arasında yol alıp Manhattan adasının her
yerini gezmeye çalıştık ve bence gayet
başarılıydık.
Ertesi gün yani pazartesi günü Amerika’ya asıl
gelme nedenimiz olan üniversite gezilerine
başladık. İlk gittiğimiz okul New York’taki
Columbia Üniversitesi’ydi. Hepimizin
üzerinde, Columbia’nın ziyaret ettiğimiz
ilk üniversite olmasından kaynaklanan bir
heyecan vardı. Önümüzde daha gezeceğimiz
14 üniversite ve geçireceğimiz bir koca
hafta vardı. Şimdi düşününce zamanın ne
kadar hızlı geçtiğine inanamıyorum ama
aslında şaşırmamam lazım: Eğlendiğimiz
zamanlar daha çabuk geçer, sıkıldıklarımızsa
bitmek bilmez. Columbia hakkında bilgi
almak için, sunumla başlayıp soru-cevap
accomplished the impossible and toured
15 universities in three states. We visited
the renowned universities of Harvard, Yale
and Columbia as well as universities such as
Bentley, Tufts and Northeastern.
Our trip began with a race the length and
breadth of Adnan Menderes airport, as the
group were gathered together and not
unsurprisingly, ended in the same airport
with us sitting in a corner waiting for our
luggage, absolutely exhausted.
While we were in New York we were lucky
enough to celebrate a special time there.
Since the schools were all on holiday for
Easter we stayed in New York and took the
city apart! We made our way to Manhattan
through crowds of people who had taken
to the streets wearing hats decorated
with Easter eggs, baskets of fruit, carrots
and different animals. We tried to see
everywhere in Manhattan Island and I
believe we were successful! The next day,
Monday, we began on our primary mission
of visiting the universities we had arranged
to see. The first was Columbia. We were all
very excited about this, our first visit, as we
had only a week and 14 other universities
on our list. Looking back I would never have
believed a week could pass so quickly but
as they say ‘Time flies when you are having
fun’.
We began our visit to Columbia with a
meeting where we could ask any questions,
and this was followed by a tour of the
campus lead by one of the students. This
was very valuable as we were able to take
a look at the university from a student’s

şeklinde devam eden bir bilgilendirme
toplantısına katıldık. Toplantının ardından
o okulda okuyan öğrencilerden biri bize
okulu gezdirdi ve bir öğrencinin bakış
açısıyla okulu tanımaya çalıştık. Bu sadece
Columbia Üniversitesi’nde gerçekleşen bir
şey değildi. Onun dışında gittiğimiz diğer
tüm okullarda da aynı sırayla olmasa da aşağı
yukarı aynı şeyleri yaptık. İlk gittiğimiz okulun
Columbia olması, ben de dahil olmak üzere
bazılarımızın moralini bozmadı değil. Sonuç
olarak hayallerimizi süsleyen bu mükemmel
okula girmenin bu kadar zor olacağını
beklemiyorduk. Bekleyenler varsa bile onlar
da bu gerçekle yüzleşmeye henüz hazırlıklı
değildi. Columbia’dan sonra Eugene Lang
College ve hemen arkasından da NYU’ya
giderek New York’taki üniversite turumuzu
tamamlamış olduk. O günün akşamında
Didem Hanım’ın gezinin başından beri
heyecanla beklediği ve bu nedenle yerinde
duramadığı bir etkinlik vardı: Amerikan
Koleji mezunlarının toplandığı ve Didem
Hanım için eski öğrencilerini göreceği yer
anlamına gelen Pera Soho’da buluşma. New
York’ta yaşayan ACI mezunlarını tanıma
fırsatım olduğu için çok mutu olduğumu
söylemek isterim. Gezdiğimiz, gezeceğimiz
ya da gezmeye vaktimizin olmadığı pek çok
üniversiteden mezun olan veya hâlâ okuyan
bir grup ACI mezununu tanımak, onların
bizim okulda okudukları zamanki anılarını
dinlemek beni biraz olsun umutlandırdı.
Hayalini kurmaya bile cesaret edemediğim
bazı şeylerin aslında yapılabilir olduğunu
onlar bana kanıtladılar. Ayrıca on sene
önce ACI’nin nasıl bir yer olduğunu, Tarih
dersinin anlamını değiştiren Didem Hanım’ın
Müdür Yardımcısı olmadan önceki halini
görenlerden dinlemek ilginç bir deneyimdi.

perspective. This basic format, or one very
similar, was repeated in each university we
visited. The choice of Columbia as our first
point of call, in some ways demoralized
us. We had not realized how difficult it was
going to be to gain a place at this university
– the dream of a number of our group. Even
if some of us were aware of this we were
not prepared for this reality to be spelled
out so clearly. We completed our tour
of universities in New York with a visit to
Eugene Lang College and NYU. That night
we met up with ACI graduates, an event
which Didem Hanım had been looking
forward to since the beginning of the trip.
Since the ACI graduates we met were also
graduates of either the universities we
were visiting or those we did not have time
to visit we were able to get some really
useful information. After our experience
at Columbia they gave us the courage to
believe that we could achieve what we only
had dreamed about. It was also fascinating
to listen to their anecdotes about ACI and
of course, Didem Hanım.
The next day we headed for Boston and
while in Connecticut we toured Yale and
Quinnipiac universities. We reached Boston
late afternoon and the last three days of
our trip were spent visiting universities in
Boston. After visiting the universities in the
morning we made sure we used the rest of
the time to tour the city and see as much as
we could.
One of the main benefits of such a trip
is that it gives us memories that we can
look back and relive. The ‘in’ jokes that we
shared are all part of this. Each of us had
a different objective for joining this trip.
For me, it was deciding where I could live
and study happily, while for others it was
to help them decide what line of study

Ertesi sabah Boston’a doğru yol almaya
başladık. Önce Connecticut’taki Yale ve
Quinnipiac üniversitelerini gezdik ve
akşamüzeri de Boston’a ulaştık. Geriye kalan
üç günde Boston’daki on üniversiteyi gezdik.
Sabahları erkenden üniversiteleri ziyaret
ettik, akşamların da şehri gezmemiz için bize
kalmasına özen gösterdik ve yapabileceğimiz
kadar çok şey yapmaya, görebileceğimiz kadar
çok yer görmeye çalıştık.
Bu tarz okul gezilerinin en önemli özelliğinin
ileriki yıllarda geriye baktığımızda
konuşabileceğimiz bir olayın, hâlâ
gülebileceğimiz ve bizim dışımızda kimsenin
anlamayacağı ortak şakaların, esprilerin
olduğuna inanıyorum. Oraya gidiş sebebimiz
her birimiz için ayrıydı. Ben nasıl bir yerde
yaşamak istediğime, ileride nerede mutlu
olacağıma karar vermeye çalışırken kimileri
ne okumak istediklerine karar vermeye
çalışıyordu. Bu geziden hepimizin kazancı
farklıydı. Kimileri Amerika’da okumaya
karar verirken, ben, önümdeki on senenin
planını kafamda oluşturdum. Belki tek ortak
noktamız geziyi birlikte yapıyor olmamızdı
ama ben gittiğim grubu kimseyle değişmek
istemeyeceğimden eminim. İlk Amerika
Üniversiteleri Gezisi’nin büyük bir başarıyla
sonuçlandığını haber vermek isterim.

2012 BAHAR DÖNEMİNDEKİ
DİĞER BAŞARILARI:
Günlerden 16 Şubat 2012, saat 03.14 A.M,
yer İzmir Adnan Menderes Havaalanı’ydı.
Birden telefonum titredi. Usulca cebimden
telefonumu çıkardığımda karşımdaki isim,
ACI’nın değerli matematik öğretmeni ve
Genç Başarı kulübü sponsor öğretmeni Gül
Yılmazkoç idi. 2012 Belçika Ürün Fuarı gezisi
bu telefonla başlamış oldu.
Gül Hanım, havaalanına giriş yaptığını
söyledi, biz de Orcan Çetinkaya’yla birlikte
saat 2’den beri heyecanla havaalanında
onları beklediğimizi. Ama belirtmeliyim
ki, Belçika’da İzmir Amerikan Koleji Genç
Başarı Kulübü olarak elde ettiğimiz birincilik
ödülünün heyecanı yanında o gece sadece
bir başlangıçmış.
Aslında, fuar İzmir Amerikan Koleji için
aylar öncesinden başlamış, heyecanı
ise biz kulüp üyeleri için her geçen gün
artarak devam etmişti. Ülkemiz Türkiye’yi
ve okulumuzu Belçika’da en iyi şekilde
temsil etme doğrultusunda 2011 yılından
itibaren başlayan toplantı ve görüşmelerle
fuara hangi şirketlerle katılacağımızı, hangi
ürünlerle fuar piyasasına çıkacağımızı,
hangi kampanya ve satış taktiklerini
uygulayacağımızı, hangi tanıtımlarla daha çok
insana ulaşabileceğimizi, şirket tüzüklerimizi
ve misyonumuzu belirledik. Burada bir
cümleyle ifade edilebilen bu süreç gerçekte
tüm İzmir Amerikan Genç Başarı Kulübü
olarak aylar süren çalışma temposunun
sonunda gerçekleşti. Satış pazarlama, stand
düzeni, malların üretimi, teslimatı, kârzarar hesapları, ödemeler ve planlamalar
zorlu süreçler sonucu bitti ve hepimiz daha

Suddenly my telephone started vibrating.
I carefully took it out of my pocket. The
caller ID showed it was no other than Gül
Yılmazkoç, our Math teacher and sponsor
teacher of the Junior Achievement Club.
She was calling to say she had arrived at the
airport and so our trip to the 2012 Belgian
Goods Trades Fair had begun. I and Orcan
Çetinkaya had been excitedly waiting for her
arrival since 2 a.m. This excitement, however,
was nothing compared to the excitement we
felt on winning first prize in Belgium.
Actually the “Fair” had started months ago
at ACI for the members of the JA Club and
excitement mounted with every day which
passed. At the meetings which had begun
in 2011 we had to decide which Turkish
company we were going to represent at
the fair, which product we were going to
show, which sales and marketing technique
we were going to employ, which kind of
advertising would reach more people, our
company statutes, and how we would best
represent Turkey. After months of hard
work, everything summed up in just the
one previous sentence had been settled
on. In addition to these we also worked on
sales, the stand layout, and the production
of the product, delivery, our profit and
loss statement and payments which left us
exhausted before we got to the actual fair.
It had been decided to enter two products;

• 5 Mayıs 2012’de Robert Koleji’nde
düzenlenen “ Remixopolis
İnovasyon Kampı”na Türkiyenin
farklı illerinden gelen 64 öğrenci
ve 16 takım farklı fikirlerle
yarıştı. L2E öğrencilerimizden
Ardan Yaman’ın bulunduğu
grup, inovasyon kampının
iştirakçilerinden FED-EX şirketinin
“FED-EX dünya pazarında bir
numarada , fakat Türkiye’de henüz
alt sıralarda. Sizler şirketin başında
olsanız hangi 3 temel stratejiyle
şirketi Türkiye’de de bir numara
yaparsınız?” sorusuna verdikleri
cevapla birinci seçildi. Bu sonuçla
FED-EX Türkiye CEO’su Kerem
Bilgiç’le, Genel Müdürlük’te
bir gün geçirip projelerini
paylaşmaya ve uygulamada rol
almaya davet edildiler.

3-6th March 2012.
• Under the sponsorship of Intel and
HP the Reason and Idea Camp was
hosted by Işıkkent High School in
Izmir March 23-25th, 2012. Out of
50 students, L3D student Batuhan
Turan and L3C student Gülce
Tulcalı took second and third place
respectively with their projects on
fighting obesity. They also won the
right to attend the training course
on entrepreneurship at Özyeğin
University.
• The Remixoplois Innovation Camp
was held at Robert College on May
5th, 2012 where 64 students and
16 teams from different provinces
from all over Turkey competed. The
group which included L2E student,
Ardan Yaman, took first place for
their response to the question:
“FED-EX is number one in the world
market, but in Turkey it is placed
quite a way down the table. If you
were the head of the company,
which three basic strategies would
you employ to make this company
number one?” Following this
result, the CEO of FED-EX, Kerem
Bilgiç, invited the winning group
to spend one day at the General
Headquarters to share their project
and help put it into practice.

önce okulumuzda kurulan Satisfactory Co.
“Ozpack” ürünü ile, ve 2012 yılında kurulan
genç Woodart Co. Wood Block Printings
ürünleriyle fuardaki yerimizi alacaktık.
Son toplantımızın ardından Çarşamba gecesi
saat 3.30’da Adnan Menderes’te buluştuk
ve İstanbul üzerinden, Brussels Airport’a
saat 12’de ulaştık. Telefonlarımızı açıp,
ailelerimize gerçekleşen rötarla ilgili haber
verdik ve gurbet ele vardığımızı ama her
şeyin yolunda ilerlediğini ve keyiflerin müthiş
olduğunu ilettik. Perşembe gününü küçük
Brüksel’de, patates kızartmaları, wafflelar ve
gezilmesi gereken tüm yerlerle geçirdikten
sonra otelimize yerleştik ve hepimiz yorucu
geçecek Cuma ve cumartesi için dinlenmeye
başladık. Sabah kahvaltıda mentorumuz
Gül Hanım’ın son taktikleriyle, dinlenme
şehrimiz Brüksel’den ayrılarak trenle
Antwerp’e geçiş yaptık. Antwerp Cumartesi
günü fuarın gerçekleşeceği, Brüksel’e
nazaran daha küçük fakat sıcak, canlı ve
ticaret kokan (limanları gerçekten hatrı sayılır
zenginlikteydi) şehirdi. Antwerp Gar’ında
indik, otelimiz garın tam karşısındaydı. Belçika
Genç Başarı Organizasyonu tüm üyeleriyle
bizleri karşıladılar. Bizler daha resepsiyonda
kayıt yaptırırken iş konuşmaya başlamıştık,
yanımızda kayıt için sıra bekleyen Hollandalı
grupla birlikte e-postalarımızı paylaştık,
hatta önümüzdeki yıl için küçük planlar
yapmaya bile başlamıştık. Odalarımıza giriş
yaptık , eşyalarımızı düzenledik ve jet hızıyla
tekrar lobiye indik; çünkü organizasyonun
düzenlediği Antwerp turunu kaçıramazdık.
Aramızda Efe Madranefe, Ceren Acar gibi
Genç Başarı’yla Antwerp’ü birden fazla
gezmiş arkadaşlarımız olmasına rağmen

We left for the fair from Adnan Menderes
Airport on the Wednesday at 3:30 a.m. and
arrived at Brussels’s Airport at midnight. Of
course, I first assignment was to phone home
and allay any fears our families might have.
Thursday we did our sightseeing of Brussels,
ate chips and waffles before settling in to
our hotel and getting some rest before the
hectic Friday and Saturday. After a final talk
on tactics by Gül Hanım at breakfast, we left
Brussels and travelled by train to Antwerp.
This is the city where the fair was held. It
is smaller than Brussels but nevertheless
important because of its port. It is a friendly
and lively commercial city. The hotel where
we were to stay was conveniently right
opposite Antwerp railway station and on our
arrival we were met by the members of the
Belgian Junior Achievement Organisation.
Even while checking in to the hotel we
started talking about work, exchanged E-mail
addresses with the group from Holland
also waiting to check in and even started
making some plans for the following year.
After speedily unpacking we returned to the
lobby as we did not want to miss the trip
round Antwerp which had been organised.
Even though some of our members like Efe
Madranefe and Ceren Acar, had been to
Antwerp many times before with JA, we were
excited about this, our first visit.
That evening we ate dinner a little outside
Antwerp at the Bowling Restaurant. Our
spaghetti dishes which we had ordered from
Turkey were all ready and we were amazed
at the system. After dinner, of course, we

Akşam yemeği için Antwerp’ün biraz
dışına çıkarak Bowling Restaurant’a gittik.
Burada siparişlerini önceden Türkiye’den
gönderdiğimiz makarnalarımızı hazır ve
bizleri beklerken bulunca , sisteme hayran
kaldık. Makarnalardan sonra sıra bowlinge
geldi. Birer profesyonel olmamamıza
rağmen iddialı atışlarımız göz doldurdu.
Her ülke öğrencisinin karışık takımlarda
oynadığı bowling aldığımız sayılardan çok
oluşturduğumuz yapıcı bağlar açısından
mutlu ediciydi.
Otele saat 23.00’te vardık, harap ve bitap
düşmüş bir haldeyken bir anda ertesi
günün yarışma günü olduğunu hatırlayınca
kendimize geldik, silkelendik ve güzel
düşüncelerle uyuduk. Kalktığımızda
aylarca hazırlığını yaptığımız gün gelmişti.
Kahvaltıdan sonra stant dekorlarımız,
ürünlerimiz ve çalışma raporlarlarıyla
yola çıktık. Antwerp’ün girişinde bulunan
Wijnegem Alışveriş Merkezi’ne ulaştık.
Standlarımızı kurduk, şirket kıyafetlerimizi
giydik ve takım ruhumuzla hazırdık. Alışveriş
merkezinin kapıları açıldı ve yarışmamız
başlamıştı. Gün içinde alışveriş merkezinde
gelen müşterilere ürün satmaya başladık.
Yaklaşık 9 saat ürünlerimizi pazarladık,
anlattık. Ben mensubu olduğum WoodArt
Co.’da daha önceden İzmir’de, mezunumuz
Selin Kabacaoğlu’nun sahip olduğu Chitra
firmasının destekleriyle hazırladığımız
tamamen organik tahta baskı çanta, elbise,
atlet, fular, eşarp, kese vb. dekoratif ve yaratıcı
ürünleri pazarladım. İkinci şirketimiz, diğer
bir mezunumuz Osman Can Özcanlı’nın
fikir sahibi olduğu Ozpack, çok amaçlı kitap
taşıma aparatı, ürününü sattı. Gün boyunca
şirket üyeleri sürekli değişerek stantta kaldık,
binlerce kez aynı şeyleri anlattık, yüzlerce
soru cevapladık , onlarca yüz güldürdük ve
hepimiz milyon kere yorulduk ve gerçek
hayattaki işletmeciliği bu genç yaşımızda
tatmış olduk.
Ama sanırım işimizi öğrendiklerimiz ve
yeteneklerimizle birleştirip iyi bir iş yapmış
olacağız ki , anlatması en keyifli bölüme
geldik. Gün içinde bizlerin fark etmediği
sivil giyimli ve müşteri rolünü oynayan
ve stantlarımızı gezen jüri bizleri 3 kriter
doğrultusunda ve en sonda bu üç kriterin
ortak değerlendirildiği alanlarda sınadı ve
kararını verdi. Sekiz ülkeden, iki kıtadan, 100’ü
aşkın okul arasında Özel İzmir Amerikan
Koleji Genel Şirketler alanında birinci oldu.
Ayrıca “en iyi pazarlama” ve “en iyi stant”
alanında da yine Özel İzmir Amerikan Koleji,
yani temsilen bizler birinci olduk. Belçika’da
alabileceğimiz 4 ödül vardı, 3’ünü aldık,
kalan bir ödülü de paylaşmaları için diğer
100 okula bıraktık. Otelimize dönüp hep
beraber başarımızı kutladık. İnanılmaz keyifli,
inanılmaz eğlenceli ve inanılmaz öğretici olan
gezimizi Pazar günü başladığımız yerde tekrar
Adnan Menderes Havaalanı’nda bitirdik. Eve
geldiğimizde sanırım çoğumuzun sorusu,
“anne yatağım hazır mı ?” idi.
Bizlere bu imkanları sunan Genç Başarı
Kulübüne, Gül Yılmazkoç’a, Mualla Yüksel’e,
okul yönetimimize , anne babalarımıza ve
tüm ekip arkadaşlarıma her şey için teşekkür
ediyor, Türkiye ve İzmir Amerikan Koleji adına
nice başarılara imza atma dileğiyle sözlerimi
bitiriyorum.

went bowling. The teams were made up of
students from each country and although we
might not have broken any bowling records
we did, more importantly, start making
friends.
We got back to the hotel at 23:00, exhausted
but soon came round when we remembered
that the next day was the day of the
competition. We woke up to the day we had
been working towards for months. Straight
after breakfast we set off with the decorations
for our stand, our products and the work
reports. The competition was to be held at
the Wijnegem Shopping Mall just on the
outskirts of Antwerp. We set up our stand, put
on our company uniforms and got into the
team spirit. The doors to the mall opened and
the competition began. We sold our products
for over nine hours. I was representing
WoodArt Co. and was responsible for selling
woodprint bags, dresses, vests, scarves,
bath gloves, etc. all done with organic wood
printing blocks produced with the help of our
graduate, Selin Kabacaoğlu who owns Chitra.
Osman Can Özcanlı who was the person
behind Ozpack, sold his versatile book
carrier. We took turns on the stand, explained
the same things a thousand times, answered
hundreds of questions, made tens of people
laugh and learned at this young age what it is
really like to be in business.
Obviously we must have done a good job.
Throughout the day the jury members,
disguised as customers, visited the stands
judging us on three criteria. When the results
were collated our school, ACI, had come
first in the ‘General Company’ category out
of almost 100 schools from eight different
countries and two continents. In addition
we also received ‘The Best Sales’ and ‘The
Best Stand’ awards. Since we had taken
three out of the four awards we could
get we were overall first. We returned
to our hotel to celebrate. This trip was
unbelievably enjoyable, incredibly fun and
very instructional and ended on the Sunday
back at Adnan Menderes Airport. When we
got home, I am sure most of us said we were
going straight to bed!
I thank the Junior Achievement Club,
Gül Yılmazkoç, Mualla Yüksel, the school
administration, our parents and all the team
members for this opportunity. I wish Turkey
and ACI more successes.

dalındaki “Radyo Dalgalarının Metaller
Üzerinde Oluşturduğu Fotoelektrik Olayı
Saptama” başlıklı projesiyle, Sema Gür’ün
danışmanlığındaki ACI öğrencisi Can Berk
Kanat’ın tarih dalındaki “Pomaklar” (Pomak
gelenekleri ve kültürü ile ilgili bir sosyal
tarih projesi) projesi.
Özel Ege Lisesi’nce düzenlenen 10. Fen
Araştırma Projeleri Yarışması’na ise İzmir,
İstanbul, Adapazarı, Amasya, Aydın, Bursa,
Eskişehir, Manisa, Muğla, Nevşehir, Niğde,
Ordu,Trabzon, Uşak, Zonguldak illerinden
resmi ve özel fen liseleri, özel liseler,
anadolu liseleri, bilim vakıfları katıldı. 187
projenin katıldığı ilk aşamanın ardından 16
biyoloji, 17 fizik, 14 kimya, 34 ilköğretim
fen projesi olmak üzere sergilenen toplam
81 proje arasından, farklı üniversitelerden
gelen üçer kişilik jüriye yapılan sunum
sonunda dereceye girenler tespit edildi.

The projects of three of our students in the
fields of Physics and History were accepted
to the Aegean Area Finals of the Tübitak
High School Students’ Projects Competition.
The 10th Science Research Projects
Competition was organised by Özel
Ege High School. A total of 187 projects
were entered in the competition from
government and private science high
schools, private high schools, Anatolian
high schools and science foundations from
the provinces of Izmir, Istanbul, Adapazarı,
Amasya, Aydın, Bursa, Eskişehir, Manisa,
Muğla, Nevşehir, Niğde, Ordu, Trabzon,
Uşak, and Zonguldak – in short from all over
Turkey.
In the field of Physics Mert Karakaya’s
project titled, To Determine the Effect
of Radio Waves on the Speed Liquids
Evaporate and Ada Doğrucu and Kaan
Karaca’s joint project, “Sıcak Fotograf”,
were seen worthy of display at the event to
be held on April 27th. Oktay Ünal acted as
advisor on both projects.
In the field of Biology Mehmet Kaan
Madranefe and Cem Özer’s joint project,
‘ Water Purification Using Scenedemus
Microalgae’ and Begüm Önçağ’s project,
‘The Research of the Antibacterial Effects
of Volatile Oils Extracted from a Variety of
Plants on Streptococcus Mutans and the
Role it plays in Tooth Decay’ were also seen
worthy of display at the event to be held on
L3 öğrencisi Begüm Önçağ’ın “Farklı
Bitkilerden Elde Edilen Uçucu Yağların
Diş Çürüğünde Rol Alan Streptococcus
Mutans Üzerindeki Antibakteryel Etkilerinin
Araştırılması” adlı projesi de biyoloji dalında
üçüncülük aldı. Katılımcı projelerden 81’i
de sergilenmeye değer görüldü. ACI
öğrencisi Mert Karakaya’nın fizik dalında
“Radyo Dalgalarının Sıvıların Buharlaşma
Hızı Üzerindeki Etkisini Belirlemek” adlı
projesiyle, biyoloji dalında Mehmet Kaan
Madranefe ile Cem Özer’in “Scenedesmus
Mikro Alg Türü ile Su Arıtma” projesi
etkinlikte sergilenmeye değer bulundu. Ayrıca, İzmir’de düzenlenen DOESEEF
Proje Fuarı’nda Deren Acay ve Beysun
Önder’in “Radyo Dalgalarının Metaller
Üzerinde Oluşturduğu Fotoelektrik Olayı
Saptama” konulu projesi elemeleri geçerek
Ekim ayında Brezilya’da düzenlenecek
MOSTRATEC Uluslararası Bilim ve Teknoloji
Fuarı’nda ülkemizi temsil etmeye hak
kazandı.
April 27th. Füsün Özyaman acted as advisor
on both projects.
After the presentations, a committee of
three judges from different universities
chose the projects deserving of awards
out of a total of 81 projects,comprising of
16 biology projects, 17 physics projects,
14 chemistry projects and 34 elementary
school projects.
The result of this was Grade 10 students
Ada Doğrucu and Kaan Karaca’s joint
project received first place in the field of
physics and Begüm Önçağ was awarded
thrid place in the field of Biology.
In addition to these awards, in the DOESEEF
Projects Fair held in Izmir, Deren Acay and
Beysun Önder’s joint project: The Discovery
of How Radio Waves Form a Photoelectric
Effect on Metals, got through the elimination
rounds and they are to represent Turkey
with this project at the MOSTRATEC
International Science and Technology Fair to
be held in Brasil in October.

The Hiking Club’s Trip to Kazdağı (Ida)
on May 5-6th, 2012
ACI Dağcılık Kulübü, 5-6 Mayıs tarihlerinde Kazdağı’na (İda) bir gezi düzenledi. Gezi izlenimlerini Dağcılık
Kulübü Sponsor öğretmeni Fahriye Kılınç ACI in Action için kaleme aldı.
ACI Hiking Club organized a trip to Kazdağı ( Ida ). Hiking Club supervisor Ms. Fahriye Kılınç wrote her
impressions of the trip for ACI in Action.

Kazdağı Ulusal Parkı
Kazdağı National Park
İda (Kazdağı), tanrıların oturduğu Olympos
dağı kadar zengin ve şiir dolu efsanelerin
beşiğidir. Ana Tanrıça Rhea, çocuklarını
doğar doğmaz yiyen kocası Kronos’tan
kaçırdığı Zeus’u bir efsaneye göre, buraya
bırakmıştır. Zeus, İda tepelerinde dağ
perileri, Nymphalar tarafından büyütülmüş,
sonra babası Kronos’u tahtından atıp,
tanrılar ve insanlar üstünde egemenliği
eline alınca da İda’ya sık sık uğramaktan
vazgeçmemiş. Tanrılar İda’da dernek kurar,
hele Troya savaşında olup bitenleri hep İda
Dağı’nın tepesinden gözlerler.
Mt. Ida (Kazdağı) is as rich in poetic legends
as Mt. Olympus which was the seat of the
gods. The mother goddess, Rea, had to
hide her children for her husband, Kronos,
who ate them as soon as they were born.
According to myth she left her son Zeus,
here. He was brought up by the spirits and
nymphs who lived here. Later he deposed
his father and after gaining sovereignty
over all the gods and humans continued to
visit Mt. Ida regularly. The gods formed a
fraternity on the top of Mt. Ida and during
the Trojan War observed all that happened
from here.

Kazdağı Milli Parkı
Batıda Dededağı, ortada esas Kazdağı,
doğuda Eybek dağı, kuzeydoğuda Gürgen,
Kocakatran ve Susuz (Sakar) dağlarından
oluşan ve Biga Yarımadası’nın en yüksek
kütlesi olan Kazdağı’nın güney yüzü,
Zeytinli Çayı’ndan Altınoluk yerleşiminin
batısına kadar olan bölümü ile bu bölümün
zirveye kadar devam eden yüksekliklerinin
kapsadığı 21450 hektarlık alan 1993 yılında
Bakanlar Kurulu kararı ile Milli Park ilan
edilmiştir.
Kazdağı National Park
Kazdağ is the highest point of the Biga
peninsula (Karataş T. 1774m.) and is made
up Dededağı to the west, the actual
Kazdağı in the center, Eybek mountain to
the east and the Gürgen, Kocakatran and
Susuz (Sakar) mountains to the southeast.
Its southern face, from Zeytinli Çay (stream)
to the settlement at Altınoluk and the area
to the west (Damla T.) and the area to the
peak at a height of 21450 hectars was
declared a National Park in 1993 by the
Cabinet.

İzmir Çanakkale karayolunun Altınoluk
Edremit bölümünün 20. kilometresinde,
Zeytinli köyü levhası takip edilerek ulaşılıyor
şelaleye. Beyoba köyünden iki kilometrelik
toprak yolla gelinen şelalenin çevresi,
piknik ve mesire yeri olarak düzenlenmiş.
Yükseklerdeki Sarıkız Yaylası’ndan doğan
Kızılkeçili Çayı üzerindeki Sutüven Şelalesi’nin
adı, “tüven” yani “sıçrayan” su anlamına
geliyor. Dağların denize bakan yamacındaki
şelale, isminin hakkını verircesine kayaların
üzerinden sıçrayarak düşüyor küçük göletinin
yüzeyine. Köpürerek, 17 metre yüksekten
dökülen sular, çam ormanlarıyla kaplı vadiyi
serinletiyor.
Sutüven Waterfall
The waterfall is accessed by following the
signpost for the village of Zeytinli after
about 20 km at the Altınoluk-Edrenmit
section of the Izmir to Çanakkale highway.
After following the dirt road from the village
of Beyoba for 2 km. you reach the waterfall
area which has been made into a picnic
and park area. The waterfall is fed by the
Kızılkeçili Çayı (stream) which springs from
high up in the Sarıkız Yaylası (plateau). It
gets its name from “tüven” which means
“leaping”water. On the sea side slope of the
mountain the waterfall earns its name as the
water seems to leap from rock to rock in its
fall to the pool below. The foaming water
falls from a height of 17 meters, cooling the
valley covered in pine trees.

Hasanboğuldu Gölü'nü kendimiz gidip görmek istedik.
We wanted to go and see Hasanboğuldu lake for ourselves

Hasanboğuldu efsanesi:
Efsaneye göre, yöre aşiretinden bir kız ile ovalı bir delikanlı evlenmek ister. Fakat töreler
uymaz ve töre sınavları yapılmasına kara verilir. Kız, ovalı delikanlıya “Benimle evlenmek
istiyorsan aşiret büyüklerinin kararı olarak, 40 okkalık tuz çuvalını bizim dağa sırtından hiç
indirmeden getirmelisin” der.
Çünkü dağlı kız, tuz çuvalını hiç nefes almadan ovadan dağa götürebilmektedir. Delikanlı
Hasan, Emine ile evlenebilmek için tuz çuvalını sırtlanır ve dağa çıkmaya başlar. Ne var ki
sıcakta terlemiş ve tuz çuvalı sırtında derin yaralar açmıştır. Yarı yolda çıkamayacağını anlar
ve gölete kendisini atar. Uzun süre delikanlıdan haber alamayan Emine, daha sonra gölette
Hasan’ın yemenisini bulur. Terk edilmeye dayanamaz ve dere kenarında Hasan’a verdiği
yemeniyle kendini bir ağaca asarak hayatına son verir.
Hasanboğuldu Lake
The Legend of Hasanboğuldu
According to the legend, a girl from one of
the nomadic tribes in the area wanted to
marry a boy from the valley. This was not
acceptable to the customs and traditions of
that time so it was decided to give the boy
a test. The girl told the boy that according
to the elders of the tribe the boy must
carry a sack of salt weighing 40 okka (an
Ottoman standard of measurement where
1 okka = 1.28 kgs) to the mountain on his
back without putting it down once.
This test was given since the girl was
capable of carrying a sack of salt to the
valley without taking a rest. Since the young
man, Hasan, wanted to marry the girl,
Emine, he picked up the sack and set off for
the mountain. In the heat he sweat and the
salt made terrible wounds on his back. Half
way there he realised that he was not going
to make it and threw himself into the lake.
After not hearing anything from the young
man for quite a while, Emine found Hasan’s
scarf by the lake. Not being able to bear his
loss she used the scarf, which she had given
Hasan, to hang herself from a nearby tree.

- Tahtakuşlar Köyü
Yolumuz üzerindeki Tahtakuşlar Etnografya
Galerisi’ni ziyaret ettik ve yörenin kültürü
hakkında çok değerli bilgiler edindik.
UNESCO ödüllü ve uluslararası üne sahip
Etnografya Galerisi Türkmenleri yakından
tanımak, onların sosyal, kültürel yaşamını
öğrenmek için iyi bir seçenek. Türk
Boylarının ilginç ve özgün kültür varlıkları,
giysileri, ev eşyaları, aletleri, halıları ve
çadırları, sanat galerisinde her tür sanat
yapıtları yıl boyunca sergileniyor. Galerinin
kurucusu ve sahibi Alibey Kudar’ın bir
özelliği de son Köy Enstitüsü mezunlarından
olması.
Batı Anadolu'ya has bir çadır. Yuvarlak olduğu için "topak" deniyor ve taşınabilir olduğu için de "Turluk". Keçeden
olduğu için keçe çadır olarak da biliniyor.
A western Anatolian Turkmen tent. It is the only original to be found in Turkey. Because it is round it is called “topak”
and since it is portable, “Turluk”. Since it is also covered with felt it is also known as a ”Felt Tent”.
Tahtakuşlar Ethnographıc Gallery
- Tahtakuşlar Köyü (Vıllage)
We visited the Tahtakuşlar Ethnographic
Gallery and learned some interesting things
about the culture of the area.
This gallery has been given a UNESCO
award and is known internationally. It was
a good place to get to know the Turkmen
people and to learn about their cultural
and social life. On display all year round are
examples of this Turkic tribe’s interesting
culture peculiar to them, such as clothes,
household goods, tools, carpets and tents.
The owner/founder of the gallery is Alibey
Kudar who is one of the last graduates of the
Village Institutes.
Kulüp üyesi Gülşah Çelik müzenin ziyaretçi defterine
hepimizin adına yazdı.
Gülşah Çelik, a member of the Hiking Club, wrote in the
museum’s guest book on behalf of the club members.

We stayed in Adatepe Pansion.
Akşam yemeklerimizi Dutdibi Kır Kahvesi'nde yedik.
We ate our evening meal at Dutdibi Kır Kahvesi
Adatepe Köyü:
Oksijen oranının yüksekliğiyle bilinen
ve kendine özgü zengin bitki ve hayvan
türlerini barındıran Kazdağlarının en
batı ucunda ve denizden 3 km uzaklıkta
konumlanan Adatepe köyü dört bir
tarafından zeytinliklerle ve çam ormanlarıyla
çevrili. Adatepe köyü doğal ve tarihi sit
alanı olarak koruma altında. Adatepe için
“müze köy” diyebiliriz. Köyün meydanı “eski
kilise” alanı. Yukarı mahalle “Türk evleri/
konakları”nın, aşağı mahalle de “Rum evleri/
konakları”nın en güzel örneklerini sunuyor.
Adatepe Köyü:
Kazdağı is known for its high percentage of
oxygen in the air and for its rich flora and
fauna. At its most westerly point and only
3km. from the sea, the village of Adatepe is
surrounded on all sides by olive and pine
trees. Adatepe is protected as it is both
a natural and historical area. We could
describe Adatepe as a “museum village”.
The village square is the site of the old
church. The upper portion of the village is
where the houses belonging to the Turks
were situated while the lower portion
housed the Greeks. This area has some of
the best examples of old Greek houses.

Denizden 250 metre yüksek Batı tepesinde
“Zeus Altarı” yer alır ve kartal gözüyle
körfezi denetler. Kayaların oyulma
biçeminden, sunağın 4 bin yıl geriye giden
bir geçmişi olduğu anlaşılır. Tapınağa
çıkan merdivenler insanları “Göktanrı”ya
yaklaştırırken, boşluğa oyulan basamaklar
“yeraltı”nı, yani “Hades”i işaret eder.

arasındaki doğal sınırı oluşturur. AltınolukKüçükkuyu güzergâhında Altınoluk’tan 5
kilometre ileride yer alan çayın üzerine
konumlanan tarihi Mıhlı (Başdeğirmen)
Köprüsü, tek gözlü kocaman kemeriyle
dikkat çekiyor.

Zeus Altar
“Father Zeus, great god who rules Mt. Ida”

The altar of Zeus is situated at a height of
250 meters above sea level on the summit
of Batı tepesi. It has an eagle’s- eye view of
the bay. Because of the way the rocks have
been carved it is possible to date the altar
back 4 thousand years. The steps leading to
the altar take people to the “Skygod” while
those leading down symbolise the road to
the underworld or Hades.
Walk to Adatepe/Mıhlı
(Başdeğirmen) Bridge
The Mıhlı Çayı at the foot of Kazdağları
forms the natural boundary between the
provinces of Balıkesir and Çanakkale. Mıhlı
(Başdeğirmen) Bridge lies on the AltınolukKüçükkuyu road, 5 km.from Altınoluk and
has one large span.

Köprünün yapım tarihiyle ilgili kesin bir bilgi yok. Kaz Dağları’nın zengin ekosisteminin
yarattığı coğrafyada çam, zeytin, çınar, defne, tespih ağaçları ve envai çeşit meyve
bahçelerinin bulunduğu doğal alanda yer alan bu anıt eser, büyük olasılıkla Roma
dönemine tarihleniyor. Köprü, zamanında Truva antik kentinin Ege’ye açılan önemli
kapılarından biriydi. Bazı tarihçilere göre Kral Yolu, bazılarına göre ise bölgede
gerçekleştirilen zeytin ve zeytinyağı üretiminden dolayı eski Yağcı Yolu üzerinde yer alan
Mıhlı Köprüsü, Ceneviz Köprüsü olarak da anılıyor.
Geniş bir kemer açıklığı üzerindeki yaya geçiş kısmı oldukça dar olan Mıhlı Köprüsü’nün
yakınında eski bir değirmen bulunuyor. Yakın bir zamanda onarılan değirmenin biraz
ilerisinde dar bir kanyonun ağzından akan Mıhlı Şelalesi görülebilir. Şelaleye köprüden
başlayan eski su yolu takip edilerek ulaşılıyor. Yüzyıllardır insanlığa hizmet eden Mıhlı
Köprüsü bahçelerindeki ürünleri toplamaya giden köylülere ya da hafta sonunu bu
muhteşem coğrafyayı keşfetmeye ayıran trekking tutkunlarına geçit veriyor artık.

There is no information about when it
was built. The bridge is situated in a rich
ecosystem comprising of pine trees, olive
trees, plane and laurel trees as well as a
variety of fruit orchards. It was probably
built during the Roman period. It was an
important gateway between Troy and the
Aegean. According to some historians
the bridge was part of the King’s Way
while others believe that because of the
production of olives and olive oil in the
area it was on Oil Producer’s Road. It is also
known as the Genoan Bridge.
The Mıhlı Bridge, with one wide span, has a
pedestrian way which is extremely narrow.
Near it is located a mill which has recently
been renovated. A little past this mill you can
see where the Mıhlı Waterfall flows into the
opening of a narrow canyon. You can get to
the waterfall by following the water course
from the bridge. For hundreds of years
Mıhlı Bridge has served the villagers going
to collect their produce from their fields
but now it serves the trekkers who come to
explore this fantastic geographical area.

OUR SUCCESS IN THE MATH EXAMS
Özel İzmir Amerikan Koleji öğrencileri,
Kanada’nın düzenlediği ve dünya çapında
1400 okuldan 62 bin öğrenci katıldığı
matematik yarışmalarında olağanüstü bir
başarı sergiledi. Pascal (9. sınıf), Cayley
(10. sınıf) ve Fermat (11. sınıf) matematik
sınavlarında Pascal’de 25 öğrenci,
Cayley’de 15 öğrenci, Fermat’ta 13 öğrenci
üstün başarı belgesi aldı. Her okulun
birincisi ayrıca madalya ile ödüllendirildi.
Öğrencilerimiz ayrıca Fermat’ta bölge
şampiyonu oldular. Yapılan hesaplama
sonucu İzmir Amerikan Koleji 35 uluslar
arası okul içinde birinci oldu.

The 2012 Pascal(Grade 9), Cayley(Grade
10), and Fermat (Grade 11) Canadian
Contests were written by a total of 62,000
students from over 1400 schools from all
over the world.
Certificates of Distinction were awarded
to students ranking in the top 25% of all
contestants. In Pascal, our students received
25 distinctions, in Cayley, 15 distinctions,
and in Fermat, 13 distinctions.
Top students in each school received
Medals.
Also ,our students were the ZONE
CHAMPION in Fermat. An average was
taken from the top five scores, plus students
with the same points, which resulted in
a score high enough to take first place
among 35 International schools. This is
an outstanding achievement of which our
school feels proud of students.

IN CHESS
Özel İzmir Amerikan Koleji 15. İzmir Liseler Arası Dostluk Satranç
Takım Turnuvasına 23 okul, 230 öğrenci katıldı.
A total of 23 schools and 230 students took part in the American
Collegiate Institute’s 15th Friendly Chess Tournament between Izmir
High Schools.
Özel İzmir Amerikan Koleji Okul-Aile Birliği’nin katkılarıyla bu sene 15’incisi düzenlenen
turnuva çekişmeli karşılaşmalara sahne oldu. Turnuvaya katılan öğrenciler, profesyonel
hakemler gözetiminde Gençler (Hazırlık, 9-12.sınıflar), Yıldızlar (6-8.sınıflar), Minikler (3-5.
sınıflar) ve Süper Minikler (1. ve 2.sınıflar) olmak üzere dört ayrı kategoride mücadele ettiler.
İki gün süren zorlu çekişmelerin ardından yapılan Ödül Töreni’nde kazanan okulların
takımları kupalarını aldılar. Masasında ilk üçe giren öğrenciler madalya, turnuvaya katılan
tüm öğrenciler de sertifika ile ödüllendirildiler.
Yaşar Üniversitesi, Pizza Venedik, Pınar, Veysi’s ve Can Dijital’ın sponsorluğunda gerçekleşen
bu seneki turnuvanın, tam 15 yıldır organizasyonunu üstlenen İzmir Amerikan Koleji
Coğrafya Öğretmeni Emel Aksu, “15 yıldır emek verdiğimiz ve çok önemsediğimiz
turnuvamız şu anda İzmir’in en saygın yarışmaları arasında değerlendiriliyor. Yıllar
geçtikçe katılan okul ve öğrenci sayısı arttı ve bugün 23 okulla bir arada olduk. Amacımız
öğrencilerin analitik düşünme, planlama gibi becerilerini arttıran satranç sayesinde onlara
dostça bir ortamda rekabeti tattırmaktır.Katılan tüm okullara teşekkür ederiz,”dedi.
The 15th tournament organised this year with the contributions of the American Collegiate
Institute’s Parent-Teacher Association saw some close matches. The participants competed
in four separate categories under the eyes of professional judges. The categories were:
Youths (Prep. and grades 9-12), Novices (grades 6-8), Elementary (grades 3-5) and Super
Elementary (grades 1 & 2).
After two days of close matches, the winning schools were presented with their cups at the
Awards Ceremony. The first three competitors on each table were presented with medals,
while every participant in the tournament was given a certificate.
The tournament was sponsored by Yaşar University, Pizza Venedik, Pınar, Veysi’s and Can
Digital and has been organised for the last 15 years by Emel Aksu, a geography teacher at
ACI. When interviewed she said, “ The tournament which we have organised for the last 15
years and give great importance to, has become one of the most respected competitions
in Izmir. As the years have gone by we have had more and more schools and students
taking part to the point where we have a total of 23 schools participating. Our main aim is
to have the participants compete in a friendly atmosphere while, through playing chess,
to develop the skills of thinking analytically and being able to plan ahead. We thank all the
schools who took part.”

involved in education in Turkey for thirty

hedefleri doğrultusunda gerçekleşmesi,
Milli Eğitim Bakanlığı tarafından getirilen
yeni uygulamaların müfredata adaptasyonu,
eğitime küresel ve yerel bakış gibi pek çok
konuda çalışıyor.
Öğretmen olmaya babanızdan
etkilenerek mi karar verdiniz?
Hem annemden hem babamdan etkilenmiş
olabilirim. İkisi de öğretmendi. Üstelik her
zaman okul atmosferi içinde olduk, evimiz
ya kampüste ya da kampüsün hemen
yanındaydı.
Ailenizden söz edebilir misiniz, kaç
kardeşsiniz?
Dört kardeşiz. 2 kız, 2 erkek. Ben
sonuncuyum. En büyüğümüz Susan,
Amerika’da onkoloji hastanesinde hemşire.
Margaret Miami’de resim öğretmeni.
Ağabeyim Lorrin Shepard ise Florida’da
büyük bir gösteri merkezinin müdürü. Aile
bireylerimiz arasında güçlü bağlar var.
Uzakta olsak da bu bağ hiç bozulmadı. Bu
arada, Margaret bir süre İzmir Amerikan’da
çalıştı. Babam ve annem Talas Amerikan
Ortaokulu’nda, İzmir Amerikan Koleji’nde ve
Üsküdar Amerikan Lisesi’nde çalışmışlardı.
Tarsus’ta başlayan öğretmenlik
kariyeriniz nasıl gelişti?
Ben Türkiye’deki öğretmenlik kariyerime
1981 yılında Tarsus Amerikan Koleji’nde
matematik öğretmeni olarak başladım. İki
sene orada çalıştıktan sonra Robert Kolej’e
geldim ve 18 yıl matematik öğretmeni ve
Atletizm Direktörü olarak çalıştım. Sonra
matematik bölüm başkanı oldum. Okul
yönetimi master yapmam için bir yıl izin
verdi. Harvard’da uluslar arası eğitim
alanında yüksek lisans yaptım. Robert
Kolej’de lise direktörü olarak 2001 yılına
kadar çalıştıktan sonra Üsküdar Amerikan
Lisesi’ne müdür olarak geldim.
years. He inherited his passion for education
and his love for Turkey from his family. In the
1800s his great grandfather Fred Shepard
and his great grandmother Fanny Shepard
came to the American Hospital in Gaziantep.
And the family has lived in Turkey ever
since. His grandfather, his mother and his
father, his sister and Whitman Shepard
himself have all carried on the tradition. As
high school education coordinator of The
Health and Education Foundation, Whitman
Shepard works on a variety of projects:
achieving goals the foundation sets for Izmir
American College, Tarsus American College
and Üsküdar American Academy, adapting
new curriculum requirements set by the
Ministry of Education and implementing
both an international and domestic
perspectives in the schools.
Did your father inspire you to become a
teacher?
I suppose both my mother and my father
inspired me to become a teacher. They were
both teachers. And of course we always
lived in a school environment, either on
campus or not very far from it.
Tell us a little about your family?
There are four of us altogether, two boys
and two girls. I’m the youngest. Susan is the
oldest. She’s an oncology nurse in a hospital
in America. Margaret’s an art teacher in
Miami. My older bother, Lorrin Shepard,
manages a large performing arts center.
We are a very close family. And though
we live far apart from each other we have
always stayed close. In fact, Margaret once
worked at Izmir American College, and my
mother and father worked at Talas American
Middle School, Izmir American College and
Üsküdar American Academy.
Your first started teaching in Tarsus. How
did your career develop from there?
I began teaching in Turkey in 1981. I was a
math teacher at Tarsus American College.
Two years later I moved to Robert College
where I worked as a math teacher and
athletic director for 18 years. Then I became
head of the math department. I took a
sabbatical year to do a Masters degree
in international education at Harvard
University. Returning to Turkey I worked as
the high school director of Robert College
until 2001 and then I moved to Üsküdar
American Academy to become headmaster.

You need passion to be a
good teacher. You need to
be passionate if you want to
help students achieve their
future goals for the future,
and to help them along the
way. Furthermore, you should
be excited about your area of
expertise, and you should be able
to convey this enthusiasm in a
way that will inspire students.
Üsküdar Amerikan Lisesi’ne dönerken
neler hissettiniz?
Alıştığım bir ortamdan kopmak önce zor
gelse de ailemin bu kurumlardaki emeğini
düşünerek bu pozisyonu büyük bir onurla
kabul ettim.
Amerika’daki özel ve devlet okulları ile
Türkiye’dekiler arasında nasıl bir fark
var?
Amerika’da merkezi bir eğitim sistemi
yok. Özel okullar istedikleri gibi eğitim
verebilirler ve kimse de onlara karışamaz.
Ancak akreditasyon almış olmaları ve eğitim
dünyasındaki itibarları hayati derecede
önemlidir. Bunları kazanmak hiç de kolay
olmaz. Kamuya ait okullar ise her eyalette
bulunan State Board of Education tarafından
idare edilir. Türkiye’ye baktığımızda bütün
okulların Milli Eğitim Bakanlığı’na bağlı
olduğu merkezi bir yapı görürsünüz.
Sizce merkezi yapının gerekçeleri neler?
Eğitim korumaya yönelik bir sistemdir.
Eğer eğitim gibi ülkenin geleceğini
belirleyecek bir konuyu bütünüyle serbest
bırakırsanız o zaman dışarıdan gelebilecek
bir takım güç odakları gençliği farklı
yerlere sürükleyebilir. Çünkü bazıları için
eğitim amaç değil araçtır; politika, din,
terör ya da başka amaçlar doğrultusunda
gençleri eğitebilirler. Bu yüzden devlet için
eğitim, çocukları iyi birer vatandaş olarak
yetiştirmek, bu tehlikelerden onları ve
toplumu koruma anlamı taşır. Türkiye’de
devletin eğitim alanında işini zorlaştıran
çok sayıda değişik müfredata ve programa
sahip lisenin olmasıdır. Endüstri Meslek,
İmam Hatip, Fen, Anadolu gibi farklı liseler
var. Bir de sistemde o kadar değişiklikler
yapıldı ki, her birinin kontrolü, takibi,
yönlendirilmesi ciddi bir iş yükü demek.
Bu açıdan Milli Eğitim Bakanlığı’nın
ve Talim Terbiye Kurulu’nun ajandası
çok yoğun. Aslında memleketin eğitim
sorunlarına baktığınız zaman bizim özel
okullar olarak yaşadıklarımız basit kaçabilir.
Eğitim sistemini eleştirenlere bazen şu
soruyu soruyorum: “Siz olsaydınız nasıl
yapardınız? Alın size kaynak, hadi çözün
bakalım sorunları.” Sorunlar o kadar kolay
çözülemiyor ancak inandığım bir şey var
ki tek tip eğitim kesinlikle doğru değil.
Belki görevinizi yapabilmek için en kolay
çözümdür ama memleketin ihtiyaçları bu
uygulamayla karşılanabilir mi? Bence hayır!

How did it feel to come back to Üsküdar
American Academy?
Although it was difficult to leave a place I
came to know so well, I thought about all
the hard work my family had given to these
institutions and I decided that it would be
an honor for me to accept the position.
What are the differences between
private and public schools in America
and the ones in Turkey?
There is no central education system in
America. Private schools can decide on the
kind of education they will give; no one
can interfere in the process. However it’s
extremely important for a school to have the
right kind of accreditation and eminence in
the world of education. These don’t come
easily. Public schools in the Unites states are
managed by the State Board of Education.
In Turkey you have a central organization
tied to the Ministry of Education.
What do you think is the rationale
behind a central system?
Education can be perceived as a nurturing
yet protective system. If you give something
as important as education, which defines
the future of a nation, free reign, all kinds
of negative influences can lead students in
the wrong direction. For some, education
is a means and not an end; some will try to
educate children with particular political
or religious ideologies in mind. The aim
of a centralized education is to encourage
children to become model citizens and to
protect children and society from these
dangers. The Turkish education system is
also strained by the variety of high schools,
each offering its own curriculum and
programs. There are industrial high schools,
Imam Hatip religious schools, Science high
schools and Anatolian high school schools.
And then, of course, many changes are
made to the system every year resulting in
schools being overly burdened by checks,
follow-up and orientation. This is why the
Ministry of Education and the Education and
Training Board have very busy schedules.
In fact when you look at the education
problems this country is facing, it might
seem that the problems we face as a private
school are slight. I sometimes ask the
people who like to criticize the education
system: “What would you do to change the
system? Here are all the resources, how
would you go about tackling some of the
problems.” These are not easy problems,
but if there’s one thing I believe it’s that
just one style of education isn’t the right
solution. Maybe the easiest thing to do is
to ignore outside forces and focus only on
your own work, but will this attitude help
Turkey overcome these major challenges? I
don’t think so.
What is the biggest problem facing
Education in Turkey?
Think of education in Turkey as a pyramid.
At the base you have primary schools, in
the middle you have fewer high schools,
and at the top even fewer universities. The
competition gets fiercer the higher you
climb up the pyramid. Every year nearly
a million students attend high school.
This year around 1.8 million students
took the college entrance exam, but only
430,000 will eventually end up at university.
Having more and more high schools and
universities to accommodate all these
students is a very expensive approach. In
fact it would be a good idea to have more
private schools taking fee paying students
or students on scholarships. I should also
point out that the state schools would be
much better off if the Ministry maintained
all its schools at the same designated
standard. This way Turkish students wouldn’t
be compelled to attend schools far from
their residential neighborhoods. They would
make better use of time and energy and
reduce overall expenses.

destek olmalı ama sağlıklı bir
yaşamın önemini unutmamalı;
sosyalleşmenin, yaratıcı
aktivitenin önünü açmalı.
Parents should inspire
their children to work hard.
They should support them in
their studies. And they mustn’t
forget the importance of
maintaining a healthy life.
Eğitimdeki en büyük sorunumuz ne?
Türkiye’de eğitimde bir piramit düşünün,
en altta ilköğretim, ortada daha az sayıda
lise, en üstte de çok daha az sayıda
üniversite var. Yukarıya doğru tırmandıkça
yarış kızışıyor. Her yıl yaklaşık bir milyon
öğrenci liseye giriyor. Bu yıl üniversite
sınavına 1,8 milyon civarında öğrenci gitti.
Bunların ancak 430 bin kadarı üniversiteye
yerleşecek. Üniversite ve liseleri çoğaltıp
herkese yer açmak çok pahalı bir yöntem.
Aslında daha çok özel okul olabilir, imkanı
olan ya da burs alanlar bu okullara gidebilir.
Bu arada devlet de kendi sistemi içindeki
okulların eğitim kalitesini belli bir seviyeye
çıkartabilir. Böylece çocuklarımız sırf
eğitimi daha iyi olduğu için yaşadıkları
semtin dışındaki okullara gitmek zorunda
kalmaz, enerjilerini zamanlarını daha iyi
değerlendirmiş, masraflarını azaltmış olurlar.
Eğitim sistemimiz neden bu kadar sık
değişiyor?
Bir sıkıntı varsa değişim kötü bir şey
değildir ama planlı değişim önemlidir ve
uzun vadede düşünülmelidir. Türkiye’de
uzun vadeli planlama yapmak çok zor. Son
yıllarda lise ve üniversite giriş sisteminde,
mecburi eğitim süreleri ve programları
ile ilgili çok şey değişti. Bu kadar hızlı
değişiklikler öğrenciler üzerine ayrıca bir
yük bindirebiliyor.
Bir eğitimcinin en önemli özelliği ne
olmalıdır sizce ?
Tutku... Bu meslek için tutku gerekiyor.
Çocukların geleceği için hedef oluşturmak,
onların iyiliğine çalışmak için tutkulu biri
olmalısınız. Ayrıca öğrettiğiniz dalda
veya konuda da heyecanlı olmalı, bunu
öğrencinize yansıtmalısınız ki öğrencinin
ilgisini çekebilesiniz. Aksi halde çocuk o
heyecanı sizde hissetmez ve dersten sıkılır.
Eğitimci olarak çocuğun hem fiziksel hem
psikolojik sağlığını gözetmek de önemlidir.
Çünkü velilerimiz bize güvenerek çocuklarını
teslim ediyorlar ve çocuklar, ailelerinden
çok bizimle zaman geçiriyorlar. Bilgi ve
birikiminiz kadar dozunda olmak üzere
şakalaşmak, arkadaşça konuşmak da gerekli
öğrencilerle. Bir eğitmen ince bir çizgide
tüm bunları başarmalıdır. Bir de çocukların
araştırmacı yanlarını güçlendirmek çok
önemli.
Araştırmacı olmak ve değişime ayak
uydurmak bu çağda daha da önem
kazandı. Bir eğitimci olarak bu konuda
ne düşünüyorsunuz ?
Bu çok önemli bir nokta. Her şey çok hızlı
ilerliyor. Bir çok bilgi kısa sürede demode
olabiliyor. Çocukların bu hızlı değişim
sürecine nasıl uyum sağlayacaklarını, nasıl
ilerleyeceklerini öğretmek zorundayız
onlara. Konu önemli değil, araştırma önemli.
Bir takım içinde nasıl çalışacakları önemli.
Does the education system really change
that frequently?
Change is not a problem, but changes need
to be carefully planned, thinking of longterm goals. But it’s very difficult to make
long term plans in Turkey. In the last few
years, high school and university entrance
exams, the length of mandatory education
and courses have changed significantly.
These kinds of rapid changes have placed
an additional burden on students.
What are the most important qualities in
a teacher?
Passion. You need passion to be a good
teacher. You need to be passionate if you
want to help students achieve their future
goals for the future, and to help them along
the way. Furthermore, you should be excited
about your area of expertise, and you
should be able to convey this enthusiasm in
a way that will inspire students. Otherwise
you’ll lose your students and they will never
be inspired to learn. It’s also important for
a teacher to be aware of students’ physical
and psychological health. Parents entrust
their children with us. They spend more time
with us than with their families. Teachers
also need to have fun with students; they
should be both a friend and an instructor.
It’s a fine line, but it’s very important to
get that balance right. And of course it’s
very important to strengthen a student’s
inquisitive side.
Being inquisitive and able to adjust to
a changing world – what could be more
important? As a teacher what are your
thoughts on this topic?
It’s a very important point. Everything is
changing so quickly. A body of knowledge
becomes outdated in the twinkling of
an eye. We have to teach students how
to adjust to these rapid changes and
move forward. More than knowledge of a
particular subject, it’s important to develop
the right research skills. It’s important to
know how to work with a team. Students
need to develop leadership skills. This
is perhaps the one thing that stays with
students the most after they leave high
school. Students forget most of what they
learn. More importantly they need to
acquire a way of thinking that will lead to
success later in life.
In this age it’s more important to master a
certain set of skills. The global economy
today is in bad shape. We were more
dynamic when we were young; we were
excited about art and politics. But students
these days aren’t interested anymore.
They need to have ideals. They need to
be chasing after dreams, and researching
topics they are passionate about. Successful
academic students are also successful
musicians, athletes, writers and painters.
They have passions in addition to academic
subjects. They’re actively involved in extracurricular activities. And they know how to
make good use of their time. Students who
aren’t involved in these kinds of activities
think they have all the time in the world, but
the reality is that they don’t know how to put
time to good use.
Lider olmak için ne yapmak gerekiyor...
Lise eğitiminden geriye en çok bu kalır
öğrencilerin aklında. Genel olarak bilgilerin
çoğu unutulur. Başarıyı getirecek bir
düşünce biçimini kazandırmak gerekiyor
öğrencilere.
Bazı şeylere hakim olmak bu çağda çok
daha önemli. Ekonomi dünya çapında
düşünüldüğünde, genel olarak kötü
durumda. Biz gençlik zamanınızda daha
aktiftik, sanatla ve siyasetle ilgilenirdik.
Artık çocuklar bu tür konularla fazla
ilgilenmiyorlar. Bir şeyin peşinden koşmak
lazım, araştırmak, idealleriniz olması
lazım. Başarılı öğrencilere baktığınızda
aralarından müzisyen, sporcu, ressam,
yazar da çıkıyor. Çünkü ders yapmalarının
yanı sıra bu çocuklarının başka bir tutkuları
var ve bunun peşinden koşuyorlar. Bunun
peşinden koşunca biliyorlar ki zamanı da en
iyi şekilde kullanmak gerekiyor. Bu konularla
uğraşmayan çocuklar ise çok zamanları
olduğunu düşünüyorlar ama bu zamanı
nasıl kullanacaklarını pek bilmiyorlar.
Zamanı kullanma konusunda okulun
etkisi çok önemli değil mi ?
Teknoloji yüzünden işimiz hem kolaylaştı
hem de zorlaştı. Cep telefonları,
bilgisayarlar... Biz sosyalleşmek için sokakta
oynardık, akşam olunca eve gider, ailecek
yemek yerdik. Akşamları yüksek sesle

kitap okurduk. Çocuklar okula yorgun
ve uykularını almadan geliyorlar. Bu da
eğitimlerini olumsuz etkiliyor. İnternetle çok
zaman geçiriyorlar ve böyle sosyalleşiyorlar.
Bir sınır olması lazım. Elbette teknolojiyi
öğretmek zorundayız ama aynı zamanda
doğru kullanmayı da öğrenmek gerekiyor.
Eğitimciler olarak artık görevlerimizden
biri de İnternetteki bilgileri doğru
değerlendirmeyi, doğru ve yanlış bilgiyi
ayırdetmeyi öğretmek.
Bu sistem içinde velilerden ne
bekliyorsunuz ?
Veliler çocuğu çalışmaya teşvik etmeli,
destek olmalı ama sağlıklı bir yaşamın
önemini unutmamalı; sosyalleşmenin,
yaratıcı aktivitenin önünü açmalı. Çocuğun
evde sorumluluk kazanması çok önemli.
Her istediği verilen bir çocuk sorumluluk
kazanamaz. Çocuğa zamanı kullanmayı,
sözüne sadık olmayı, gününü planlamayı
öğretmek gerekiyor. Tüm bunlar bu
teknolojik çağda çok zorlaştı. Bu çağda
insanların birbirine ayıracak zamanı çok
azaldı. Yaşam tarzı değişti maalesef. Veliler,
çocuklarla daha fazla zaman geçirmeliler ve
bu zamanı yaratıcı işlerle geçirsinler. Birlikte
kitap okusunlar, yürüyüşe çıksınlar. Çocuğun
fiziksel olarak da aktif olmalarını sağlasınlar.
Aile ortamı çok önemli. Önce fiziksel ve
ruhsal sağlık geliyor bunu unutmasınlar.
Isn’t it true that school helps students
become better time managers?
Advances in technology have made our
work both easier and more difficult. Cell
phones, computers… When we were
children we used to socialize on the streets
and when night fell we went home and had
dinner with our families. We read books out
loud together. Now students came to school
tired and sleepless. This has a negative
effect on their learning. Students spend an
inordinate amount of time on the Internet;
it’s the way they socialize. But there has to
be a limit. Of course we should teach these
kids how to effectively use technology but
we also need to teach them to be good time
managers. As teachers we are also tasked
with teaching students how to effectively
evaluate information on the Internet.
What do you expect from parents?
Parents should inspire their children to
work hard. They should support them in
their studies. And they mustn’t forget the
importance of maintaining a healthy life.
They should also see socializing as a chance
to open up creative activities. It’s also very
important for a child to be a responsible
member of the household. A child who
gets everything he wants never learns the
meaning of responsibility. Children need
to be taught how to use time effectively,
to manage a day full of many different
activities. They also need to understand
the importance of keeping their word. This

Siz yeteneğin değerlendirilmesi ve
yaratıcılığa da çok önem veriyorsunuz
değil mi ?
Başarı önemli ama, yeteneğinizi
değerlendirmeniz de çok önemli. Biz iki
üç dilde çocukları yetiştirmeye çalışıyoruz.
Matematik, fen ve diğer dersler... Ama
inanılmaz derecede başarılı sanatçı
mezunlarımız da oluyor. Yavaş yavaş
velilerimiz de yeteneğin önemini anlıyorlar.
Bir toplumda ressamlar olmasa örnek
olarak, o nasıl bir toplum olurdu sizce ?
Müziksiz bir hayat düşünebilir misiniz ?
Bugün teknoloji çağındayız ve yaratıcılığı
yavaş yavaş öldürüyoruz. İnsanlar eskiden
kitap okuyunca hayal ederlerdi. Şimdi
bilgisayarda yada televizyondan izliyorsunuz
ve hayal etmeye gerek görmüyorsunuz.
Yaratıcı insanlara eğitim vermek zordur,
çok hareketli olurlar çabuk sıkılırlar. Bu
çocukların desteklenmesi gerekli. Toplum
olarak yaratıcılığı desteklemeliyiz.
Türkiye’yle ilişkinizi nasıl tanımlarsınız?
En doğru tanımla Türkiye’de evimdeyim.
Amerika’da yabancı hissediyorum.
İstanbul’da havaalanına iner inmez evime
gelmiş oluyorum. Benim duygularım, evim
burada. Amerika’da neyle karşılaşacağınızı
bilirsiniz, biraz sıkıcıdır bazı konularda. Ama
İstanbul’da heyecan vardır, tarih vardır.
Misafirperverlik Türkiye’de çok güçlü bir
kültür olarak. Her yönüyle Türkiye’yi çok
seviyorum.
Üsküdar Amerikan Lisesi İstanbul’un ve
Türkiye’nin en gözde okullarından biri
şüphesiz.
Üsküdar Amerikan Lisesi, eğitimiyle birlikte
diğer okullarımız gibi kendi içinde bir

and less time for one another. Unfortunately
lifestyles have changed. Parents need to
spend more time with their children and
it should be creative time. They should
read books together, go for walks. They
should be sure their children are leading
active lives. The right family atmosphere
is important. They shouldn’t forget that
physical and spiritual health comes first.
Children need to get the right amount of
sleep, have breakfast in the morning and
develop good eating habits, too.
It seems you give a lot of importance to
talent and creativity.
Success is important but it’s important
to know your talents. We are educating
our students in two, three different
languages. Mathematics, science and all
the others… And we have graduates who
are unbelievably talented artists. Parents are
slowly beginning to learn the importance
of talent. Imagine a world without painters.
Just what kind of society would that be? Can
you imagine life without music? We live in
technological age in which we are slowly
killing off creativity. In the past people used
to read books and imagine entire worlds
in their minds. Now they watch the world
on their computers and television and
there’s no need to imagine at all. It’s difficult
educating talented people; they are lively
and lose interest quickly. But we should be
giving just these kinds of kids extra support.
As a society we need to support creativity.
How would you define your relationship
with Turkey?
Turkey is home for me. I feel like a foreigner
in the United States. The moment my plane
lands in the Istanbul airport I feel like I’m
back home. My heart and my home are
here. In America I usually know what to
expect and I find life there a little boring. But
Istanbul is exciting. It’s a city full of history.
And the people are warm and extremely
hospitable. But there are so many other
things I love about Turkey.
There is no doubt that Üsküdar American
Academy is one of the most prestigious
schools in Istanbul and Turkey.

quality education and like all our other
schools is has a strong spirit and sense of

program to ÜAA soon. In the IB program,
exams will allow students to exempt from
certain courses after they graduate. We are
now collaborating with the British Council in
offering the IELTS exam at our schools. One
of the main aims of our school is to provide
students with a strong education in English.
So we are taking an important step forward
in this area and making life for our students
much easier.

Bölümü öğretmen ve öğrencileri,
katıldıkları bir seminerin
ardından İzmir’in önümüzdeki
yıllarda önlem alınmazsa
çölleşmesi beklenen illerin
başında geldiğini öğrendi ve
geleceğin İzmir’i için
harekete geçti.
After listening to a seminar the
Science Department learned
that if action is not taken in the
next few years then Izmir will
be one of the first provinces to
become a desert.

İzmir’I bekleyen çölleşme tehlikesine karşı
neler yapılabileceği üzerinde çalışan Fen
Bölümü Ege Orman Vakfı ile birlikte ACI
adına bir orman oluşturabileceğine karar
verdi. İzmir Amerikan Koleji Ormanı’nın
oluşturulması için en az 1000 ağaç
gerektiğini öğrenen öğrenciler, hızla tanesi
3 TL’lik ağaçların alınması için kampanya
başlattı.
We thought about what we could do and
decided to work with The Aegean Forestry
Foundation and create a forest in the name
of ACI.
One tree costs 3TL and in order to have a
forest named after the school we learned
we needed to plant 1,000 trees.. So our first
goal was to get 1,000 trees.

Hedefin 4 Katı Ağaç
2011 yılında öğrencilerin, öğretmen
arkadaşlarının, okul aile birliğinin, öğrenci
birliğinin, çalışanların, velilerin ve mezunların
katkıları ile Seferihisar Doğanbey’de 2250
ağaçtan oluşan ilk Amerikan Koleji Ormanı
oluşturuldu. Fen Bölümü, hızlı ve verimli
başarılarının sonucunda, orman oluşturma
projesini gelenekselleştirerek her yıl
tekrarlamaya karar verdi.
2012 yılı çalışmalarına Eylül ayına başlayan
grup, çeşitli el emeği ürünler hazırlayıp
satarak ya da farklı uygulamalarla (örneğin
Fizik öğretmeni Fatma Cabu’nun düğün
çiçeği yerine ACI Ormanı’na katkı yapılmasını
istedi) para topladı. İkinci Amerikan Koleji
Ormanı, 17 Nisanda Çeşme Ildırı’da 2208
ağaçla oluşturuldu.
Orman oluşturulurken, Lise 2 A ve 2 B
sınıflarıyla Çeşme Ildırı’ya gidildi ve küçük
fidanlar dikilerek can suları verildi. Ege
Orman Vakfı yöneticilerine teşekkür eden
ekipler, okula dönerken mutluydu.
“Bizler çok güzel bir kampüste yaşıyoruz,
çalışıyoruz ve eğitim alıyoruz. Doğanın
ve yeşilin kıymetini çok iyi anlıyor ve
önemsiyoruz. Güzel şehrimize her sene
oluşturacağımız yeni ormanlarımızla
güzellikler katacağımıza inanıyoruz,” diyen
ACI öğrencileri gelecek yıllarda daha fazla
ACI ormanı oluşturulması için kolları sıvadı
bile.
In 2011 with the contributions of the
students, the teachers, the Parent-Teachers
Association, the Student Council, our staff,
our parents and our graduates we were
able to plant our first American Collegiate
Institute Forest of 2,250 trees. We also
decided to repeat this each year and hence
make it a tradition.
This year we began work in September.
As the Science Department we made
things and sold them and by using other
methods such as instead of Fatma Hanım
having wedding flowers she asked for
donations to the ACI Forest and so we were
able to increase the amount of money we
collected.
On April 17th the second ACI Forest was
planted in Ildır, Çeşme with a total of 2,208
trees.
The L2A and L2B classes went to Ildır to
plant the trees. We had to be very careful
planting the saplings as they were very
small. We watered them in. After thanking
the administration and workers of the
Aegean Forestry Foundation we returned
to school.
What kept us going through all the
preparation was the support of the students
and teaching staff. We hope to repeat this
activity in the coming academic year.
The school is situated in a very beautiful
campus where teaching and learning
go on. We understand the value of the
environment and nature. We believe that
each year we plant a new forest we are
adding to the beauty of our city.
We are very grateful indeed to all who
supported us in this effort.

Kulübe katılma kararı aldığımda ne
yapacağımız konusunda fikrim yoktu.
Öğretmenlerimizle birlikte on bir kişilik
küçük bir gruptuk. Kulübümüzün sorumlu
öğretmenleri kimya öğretmenimiz Onur
Turunç, Türkçe öğretmenimiz Sevil Üsterci
ve Almanca öğretmenimiz Başak Çaylan’dı.
Daha sonra Onur Hanım’la Sevil Hanım,
okulumuz mezunlarından arkadaşları Aytaç
Aşık Aksade’yi de davet ettiler. Aytaç Aşık
Aksade okulumuzun ’68 mezunlarından.
Hem başarılı bir anne hem de Hacettepe
Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi Fizik Tedavi ve
Rehabilitasyon Bölümü’nden mezun bir
fizyoterapist. Ancak Aytaç Hanım dediğinizde
One of the innovations brought about in the
academic year 2011-2012 is the setting up
of “The Toy Club”. I decided to join the club
without really understanding what it is all
about. We are a small group of eleven and
that’s including our teachers. Our sponsor
teachers are our chemistry teacher, Onur
Turunç, our Turkish teacher Sevil Üsterci, and
our teacher of German,Başak Çaylan. Then
Onur Hanım and Sevil Hanım invited one
of their friends, an ACI graduate, Aytaç Aşık
Aksade, to join us. We have had a great year.
What have we learned? A lot! First, to get our
hands loosened up, we started by learning
how to knit. We turned the pieces we had

Bir yıl boyunca bu kulüpte pek çok şey öğrendiğimizi söyleyebilirim. Öncelikle ellerimizin
işlevsel hale gelebilmesi için işe örgü örmeyi öğrendik, ördüğümüz parçaları bebekler,
hayvanlar gibi oyuncaklara dönüştürdük. Evlerimizden getirdiğimiz atık kumaş parçaları,
düğme, boncuk ve benzeri malzemeleri süsleme ve kullanıma dönük işlevsel malzeme
yapımında kullandık. Çocuk odalarında kullanılabilecek değişik aksesuarlar ürettik. İpliği
iğneye nasıl geçireceğimizi, dikmek için ipliği düğümlememiz gerektiğini, renklerin bir arada
nasıl kullanılacağını, çocuklara kendi oyuncaklarını yapabileceklerini öğretmeyi ve en önemlisi
düşünme , tasarlama ve yaratmayı öğrendik. Öğretmenlerimiz ilk toplantımızda en önemli
amacımızın neşeli nesneler üreterek yaratıcılığımızı geliştirmek ve ürettiklerimizle toplum
hizmeti yapmak olduğunu söylemişlerdi. Bu amacımıza ulaştığımızı düşünüyorum. Mayıs ayının
ilk haftası da ürünlerimizi sergileyerek etkinliğimize son noktayı koyduk. Elde ettiğimiz geliri
sosyal servislere destek amacıyla “Öğrenci Birliği”ne teslim ettik. Önümüzdeki yıl bu kulübün
devam etmesini gönülden diliyorum.

Sevgili öğretmenlerim, niçin böyle bir kulüp açtınız?
Onur Turunç: Fen eğitimi, problem yaratmak, bu problemi çözmek için gözlem ile deney
yapmak ve sonuca ulaşmak için verileri bir araya getirebilme becerisini kazandırır. Disiplin
ve çok çalışma gerektirir. Bu basamakların başarısı sadece düşünme becerisine değil, el
becerisine de dayanır. Oyuncaklar, sadece çocuğu görsel olarak etkilemez; zekâ gelişimine
de katkıda bulunur. Oyuncaklar bu nedenle iyi bir tasarım ürünü olmalıdır. Tasarım yapma,
yaratcılık ellerin işlevsel olması ile ortaya dökülür ve bilimsel düşünmeye ve işlevsel üretime
katkı sağlar.

the scraps of material, buttons, beads,
etc. which we had brought from home to
decorate the objects and make them more
functional. We made things to decorate
nurseries. We learned how to thread needles,
how to sew without knotting the end of the
thread, how to mix colours and moreover
how to teach children to make their own
toys. Most importantly we learned how to
think creatively and to design.
In our first meeting the teachers explained
that the goal of the club was to help us
develop our creativity by making fun objects
which we could use for community service.
I believe we attained this goal as in the first
week of May we put our goods on sale,
giving the proceeds to the Student Council
to use for social service clubs. My wish and
hope is that this club continues next year.
I take great pleasure in sharing the interview
done with each of the sponsor teachers
and our guest, Aytaç Hanım, so that you can
better understand the club’s purpose.
Why did you decide to start this club?
Onur Turunç: An education in the field of
science helps the student acquire the ability
to piece together the data resulting from
creating a problem and solving this problem
using observation and experimentation.
Successful completion of these stages is not
down to thinking but to dexterity. Toys do
not only appeal visually to a child but help
with the development of intelligence. For this
reason, toys should be a product of design.
Only if you are dexterous can you bring life
to a design and a scientific approach brings
functionality to it.
Sevil Üsterci: I would first like to thank Onur
Hanım for coming up with the idea for this
club. The moment she told me about it I
decided I wanted to be part of it. Now to
answer the question.

Eğitim ve öğretimin asıl amacı mutlu bireyler
yetiştirmektir. Başarı ise mutluluğun temel
nedenlerinden biridir, değil mi? Başarıya
ulaşmak için bilgiyi toplamak ve biriktirmek
yetmez. Bilgiyi kullanmak ve aktarmak gerekir
ama bu da yetmez; çünkü yaratıcı zekânın
oluşumu için bilginin katlanarak aktarılması
gereklidir. “Uygarlık ellerle yaratılmıştır.”
görüşünden yola çıkarak yaratıcı zekânın
oluşumunda el becerisinin önemine
inanıyoruz. Bizim de kulübü açarken hareket
noktamız bu oldu. Bunun yanı sıra, kulüp
etkinlikleri sosyal becerilerinizi de geliştiriyor,
takım çalışmasını ve paylaşmayı da öğretiyor;
dolayısıyla bu tür kulüp çalışmaları sizin
çok yönlü gelişiminiz için gereklidir çünkü
“yaratmak, üretmek ve paylaşmak” bizim
eğitim anlayışımızın temelidir.
Başak Çaylan: ACI’da çalıştığım süre
boyunca birçok kulüp ve komitede görev
aldım fakat bu yıl, dönem başında açıklanan
kulüp listesinde Oyuncak Kulübü dikkatimi
çekti. Oyuncak ve oyun, küçük çocuğum
olduğu için zaten hayatımın içinde yer
alan temel kavramlar arasında. Bunun
üzerine hemen Onur Hanım ve Sevil Hanım’
a kendileriyle birlikte kulüpte çalışmak
istediğimi söyledim. Çalışmalarımız
esnasında oyuncak başlığı altında birçok
el becerisi de edindik. Yaratmak ve el işi
yapmak zaman içinde bana hem çok büyük
bir keyif hem de çok büyük bir heyecan
verdi. Renkli renkli yünlerin, ipliklerin
sabırla elimde şekillendiğini görmekse
işin en güzel kısmıydı. Her şeyin çok çabuk
tüketildiği günümüzde bir şeyleri kendi
emeğimizle ortaya çıkarmak çok önemli diye
düşünüyorum. Yaratma süreci, önümüze
hazır gelen ve kısacık zaman dilimlerinde
kullanıp kenara attığımız her şey için bir kez
daha düşünme fırsatı sağlıyor. Yaratmak için,
“Bunu ben yaptım!” diyebilmek için herkesi
önümüzdeki eğitim ve öğretim yılında
kulübümüze bekliyoruz.

The aim of education and instruction is to nurture a happy individual. Isn’t success the basis
of happiness? Success does not come from acquiring knowledge. One needs to use the
knowledge and transfer it. But this is still not enough because in order for the individual to be
creative one needs to add to the knowledge one passes on. We believe in the concept that
“Civilisations were crafted” and therefore to be able to handcraft plays a role in developing
one’s creativity. This was our starting point for the club. In addition to this, through being
a member of this club one’s social interaction is developed, members learn to work as a
team, and to share. This type of club helps the whole person develop and is the basis of our
education system: “create, produce and share”.
Başak Çaylan: While I have been working at ACI I have participated in many clubs and been
on many committees but this year, when looking at the list of extra-curricular activities, this club
caught my eye. Since I am the mother of a young child I know all about toys and play. Without
wasting time I spoke to Onur Hanım and Sevil Hanım about joining them in setting up this club.
Under the broad umbrella of “toys” we have learned many skills. In the past, creating things
and doing handcrafts always gave my great pleasure and excited me. The best thing for me is
seeing those multi-coloured wools and threads take shape in my patient hands. I think it is very
important to create your own things in this world of consumerism. It makes you think about
all those commercially produced things which you use for just a short period of time before
discarding them. We look forward to having students join our club in the coming academic
year and hearing, “I made this”!
Aytaç Hanım, what attracted you to this club?
When I was a student at ACI there was a Knitting Club. I really got a lot out of being a member
of this club. The minute my friends invited me to join this club, I came running back to my
school.

When did you first start knitting?
I started when I was six years old but of course, I wasn’t very good. I got on really well with my
maternal grandmother. Whenever I went to visit her, she would give me two knitting needles
and a ball of wool and then make coffee. While drinking our coffee, I would knit. Both my
maternal grandmother and my mother could knit and sew very well. I think this is what got me
started.

çok iyiydi. Ne zaman ziyarete gitsem elime

When you were studying here, did you have the same opportunities to develop your
handicraft skills in clubs and classes?
We didn’t have a club but when I was in the second year of middle school we had sewing
classes twice a week. In Grade 10, our teacher, Mrs. Jorgansan, started a knitting club. So along
with the folklore club and tourism club, I joined the knitting club.

How did you benefit from being in Mrs.
Jorgansan’s Knitting Club?
I learned to knit from books written in English,
so it was like solving a problem. I always tried to
knit the most difficult patterns and styles. Even
now, whenever I go abroad, I always buy a book
of knitting patterns.
Kahvelerimizi içerken ben örgü örerdim. Örgü, dikişe böyle başlamış oldum. Benim anneannem
de annem de çok güzel örgü örer, dikiş dikerdi. Beni etkileyen biraz da buydu sanırım.
Siz burada eğitim görürken el becerilerinizi geliştirmek için şimdiki kulüp ve dersler gibi
olanaklara sahip miydiniz?
Ortaokul ikinci sınıfta haftada iki saat resmi dikiş dersimiz vardı ancak bir kulübümüz yoktu.
Lise birinci sınıfta öğretmenimiz Mrs. Jorgansan örgü kulübü açtı. Ben de folklor, turizm gibi
kulüplerin yanı sıra örgü kulübüne de girdim.
Mrs. Jorgansan’ın açtığı örgü kulübü size neler kazandırdı?
Bu kulüp sayesinde, İngilizce kitaplardan okuyarak problem çözer gibi örmeyi öğrendim. Hep
en zor modelleri seçip üretmeye çalıştım. Hâlâ ne zaman yurt dışına çıksam mutlaka bir örgü
kitabıyla dönerim.
Örgü yaşamınızda nasıl yer etti?
Örgü örmek lise ve üniversite boyunca beni dinlendiren bir şeydi. Eskiden internet ya da
televizyon yoktu. Yazları bütün günü sokakta veya Çeşme’de geçirme imkânı olmazdı. Ayrıca
en az on roman okuma ödevimiz olurdu. Biz de ya kitap okurduk ya da annelerimiz elimize bir
iş verirdi. Ayrıca hazır hiçbir şey satılmazdı, hep biz dikerdik. Çocuklarıma da hep ben ördüm.
Hem çalıştım hem ördüm, hiç hazır almadım.
Örgü örmekle ilgili bir anınızı bizimle paylaşır mısınız?
Aslında örgüyle genelde benim değil, çevremin hep bir anısı vardır çünkü herkeste benden
bir şeyler vardır. Örneğin oğlumun Amerika’daki arkadaşlarının bebekleri olacağı zaman birer
battaniye örüp vermiştim. Sonra o battaniyeleri hep üstlerinde görmek beni çok mutlu etmişti.
Bugünlerde el işiyle ilgili etkinliklere katılıyor musunuz?
Son on beş, yirmi şenedir değişik sınıflardan arkadaşlarla haftada bir toplanıp el işi yapıyoruz.
Ayrıca geçenlerde el işiyle ilgili bir yazı okudum, ondan bahsedeyim: Mart ayında Cumhuriyet
gazetesinin teknoloji ekindeydi bu yazı. Bilim adamları IQ’nun nasıl yükseltilebileceğini
araştırmışlar. Sonuçların arasında bazı yazarların kitaplarını okumak, spor yapmak, dengeli
beslenmek, gereksiz ilaç kullanmamak olduğu gibi el işleriyle ilgilenmek de var. Bunun sebebi
el becerisinin zihni açan, konsantrasyon gerektiren bir iş olması.
Son olarak bize hayat felsefenizi söyleyebilir misiniz?
Şimdiye kadar hiçbir şeyden bıkmadım, vazgeçmedim. Bu, benim hayat felsefem oldu.

düşünüyorum.
How has knitting become a part of your life?
Knitting was a means of relaxing during both
my high school and university years as there
was no internet or television, then. During
summer it wasn’t possible to spend all day
outside or in Çeşme. We also had to read ten
novels as part of our summer homework so we
either would read or our mothers would give
us work to do. There weren’t any ready-made
clothes so we would make them ourselves. I knit
everything for my children. I worked and knit as
I never ever bought ready-made knitwear for
them.
Could you share an anecdote about knitting
with us?
Actually, generally what I knit is not mine and
it is those around me who have the anecdotes
as they possess something I knit for them. For
example, my son lives in America and when
any of his friends were expecting babies I knit
a baby blanket for each of them. I got pleasure
form seeing the babies in the blankets I had knit.
Nowadays, do you join in any activities to
do with handcrafts?
For the last 15 to 20 years I and my friends
(graduates from different classes) have
got together to do handcrafts. Let me tell
you about something I read recently to do
with handcrafts. This piece appeared in the
technology supplement of the Cumhuriyet in
March. Scientists had been researching how
IQ could be increased. The results including
reading certain author’s books, doing sport,
eating a balanced diet, not using unnecessary
medicines and getting involved in handcrafts.
The reason for this is that doing handcrafts
makes you think and concentrate.
To close, could you tell us your philosophy
of life?
My philosophy of life is to never get bored with
anything, nor to give up on anything!

in the future when I will miss these days and
remember them with affection.

Okul doktorlarının bir araya gelme nedenleri birbirleriyle deneyimlerini paylaşmanın yanı sıra
okullarınn sağlık programları ve projeler üzerinde çalışmaktı. İki gün süren toplantılarında
okullardaki vakaların dokümantasyonundan, revire, acil vakalardan kriz planlarına, beslenme,
madde bağımlılığı, sigara, sağlıklı yaşam, cinsel gelişim gibi farklı sınıf seviyesinde verdikleri
eğitimlere konuştukları pek çok konu vardı.
Ülkemizde henüz tam olarak yerleşmemiş bir kavram olan okul doktorluğunun zor yanları
olduğu kadar, zevkli yanları da var. Yaptıkları işin ne denli önemli olduğunu vurguluyorlar
konuşurken. Tümünün isteği, ileride okul doktorluğu alanında kalıcı bir gelişimde öncü bir rol
oynama yolunda.
Okul doktorları, öğrencilerin sağlığını korumada ileriye yönelik önemli adımlar da atıyorlar.
Örneğin, obezite ve metobolik hastalıkları önlemek için genç yaşlarda önlem alınabileceğini
söyleyen doktorlar, çocuklara sağlıklı yaşam tarzını benimsetmek için çalışıyorlar. Okul
doktorları, yaptıkları işin salt bugün için değil, ilerisi için ne denli önemli olduğunun
farkındalar. Kimi zaman velilerle iletişime geçip önerilerde bulunuyorlar, kimi zaman da birlikte
üzerine incelikle çalışarak hazırladıkları sunumlarla öğrencilerin karşısına çıkıyorlar. Tüm
bunlarla birlite, okuldaki öğrencilerin sağlığından sorumlu çalışmaya devam ediyorlar .
Okullarının “iyiliği, esenliği” için pek konunun içinde bulunduklarını, çıkan yemekten, kullanılan
temizlik malzemelerine okul işleyişinde pek çok işleyişin parçası olduklarını belirten okul
doktorları zaman zaman eğitimin parçası olarak derslerde işlenen öz bakım, beslenme,
cinsellik, hastalıklar, madde bağımlılığı gibi farklı konuları anlatmak için sınıflara da girdiklerini
söylüyorlar.
School doctors met to share experiences but also to develop school health programs and
projects. In meetings over two days there was a lot to discuss: documentation of cases, sick
lists, emergency cases, nutrition, substance abuse, smoking, healthy living and sex education
courses for different grades.
There are both positive and negative sides to being a school doctor in a country where the
concept is not yet fully accepted. Over the course of the meetings the doctors were able to
emphasize the importance of their work. It was everyone’s wish for school doctors to have
more of a leadership role as the position grows and becomes a lasting position in other
schools.
School doctors are taking important steps in protecting student health. They are aware of the
preventive measures students can take for obesity and metabolism related complications and
encourage them to adopt a healthy lifestyle. They know that the work they are doing today
will pay off in the future. At times they are in close contact with parents, offering them advice,
and at times they carefully prepare presentations on a variety of health issues for students.
And they are always carefully watching over students, making sure that they are healthy and
leading healthy lives.
School doctors know that for good health and spirit at school many different things play
a role, from eating properly at meals to good hygiene. This is why they take the time to
occasionally come to classes to discuss important health issues such as substance addiction,
illness, sex, nutrition and personal hygiene.

İzmir Amerikan Koleji son sınıf öğrencisi Zeynep Tanyalçın, müzikle ilgili öyküsünü ve
“En İyi Beste” dalında birincilik kazandıkları Vodafone Liselerarası Müzik Yarışması deneyimini
ACI in Action için kaleme aldı.
Our Grade 12 student, Zeynep Tanyalçın, shares her experience of winning first prize at the Vodafone High
School Music Competition for “Best Composition” and her life and music.
ACI’ın beni müzikle tanıştırması zannederim
karşılığını hiçbir zaman okuluma
ödeyemeyeceğim bir hediye. Aslında
müziğe çok küçük yaşlardan itibaren ilgi
duymama rağmen 9 yaşındayken Devlet
Opera ve Bale korosundan sesimin
genele göre kalın olması nedeniyle
atılmamdan sonra, kendimi kimseye şu
çok sevdiğim müzik konusunda kabul
ettirememenin verdiği bir küskünlükle mi
desem, müziğe bir adım geride durdum.
Uzun bir aradan sonra müzikle tekrar ilk
yakınlaşmam lise 2’de katıldığım seçmeli
orkestra dersiyle oldu. Her hafta çarşamba
günlerini öle dirile, anlatamayacağım bir

I will never ever be able to repay ACI for
introducing me to music. Actually, I was
interested in music when I was a child but
unfortunately when I was nine years old
I was kicked out of the choir of the State
Opera and Ballet Company because I
was told my voice was too deep when
compared to the others. After a long time
away from music, I got interested again
when I joined the orchestra elective. Every
Wednesday, I was so apprehensive I cannot
explain it to you. I would ask myself if this
nervousness was because I was new to this
or if it would pass with time. If I am to be
honest, I can truly say it has never gone

heyecanla beklerdim. Bu sebeple başlarda
hep merak ettim: “Bu işlere daha yeni
girmemin getirdiği, zamanla azalacak
bir heyecan mı şu?” diye. Cevabını şimdi
tüm dürüstlüğümle söyleyebilirim ki hiç
azalmadı. Giderek arttı. Okulun son gününe
kadar her teneffüste ve hatta derslerde ilk
önüme çıkan fırsatta okuldaki stüdyomuza
kaçtım ve hatta şu an bu yazıyı bile
stüdyodaki bilgisayarda yazıyorum. Şimdi
Alkan Bey içeri girip “Zeynep konser var!”
dese, yine koşarak provalara gider, ellerim
titreyerek mikrofonu tutarım.
İşler lise hayatımın ilerleyen üç senesi
boyunca o kadar hızlı ve ardı arkası
kesilmeyen bir şekilde ilerledi ki…
İzmir’de elemeler, Ankaralarda yarışmalar,
İstanbullarda festivaller derken ACI
orkestrası San Remo, İtalya’ya kadar açıldı.
Ben tüm bu etkinliklerin içindeyken IB FenMatematik öğrencisiydim çünkü anne-baba
mesleğim doktorluktu ve ben çok küçük
yaştan beri doktor olmak için yaratıldığıma
sorgulamasız bir şekilde inandırmıştım
kendimi. Müzikte bu kadar ilerlemem
ve en önemlisi de gelişmekten bu kadar
zevk almam beni girdiğim bu “doktorluk”
yolunu ilk kez sorgulamaya itti. Kendimi
denemek ve ölçmek için Berklee College of
Music’in sınavlarına hazırlandım bu sene ve
okuldan “Dekan Ödülü” ile kabulüm geldi.
Evdeki hesap çarşıya uymaz diyorlar ya,
ileride yapmayı hayal bile edemeyeceğim
kadar beni mutlu eden bir işi yapmak için,
hayal bile edemeyeceğim kadar güzel bir
okuldan resmen Boston bileti geçmişti
elime. Çok düşündüm, kararsızlık aşamam
bir hayli uzun sürdü. Sonunda Berklee’yi
seçtim. Seneye Jazz Vocal Performance
ve Songwriting okumak için Boston
yolcusuyum. Bu aşamalarda her zaman
yanımda olan başta aileme olmak üzere
tüm öğretmenlerime, grup arkadaşlarıma
ve her zaman hiç çekinmeden gidip
danışabildiğim, kapısını her daim bana açık
tutan ve benim için bir öğretmenden çok
fazlası olan Alkan Bey’e (Günlü) ne kadar
teşekkür etsem azdır.
away. In fact, it has increased. Right up until
the last day of school and even between
lessons when I had chance I would run to
the music studio. Even now I am writing
this on the computer in the music studio.
However, if Alkan Bey were to walk in this
minute and tell me that there is a concert,
I would rush to rehearsal and hold the
microphone but in shaking hands.
Things took off at such a speed during my
three high school years; qualifying rounds
in Izmir, competitions in Ankara, festivals in
Istanbul and then as far as San Remo, Italy
with the ACI orchestra.
While all this is happening, I am an IB
Science-Math student. Since my parents
are doctors and I had convinced myself
from an early age that I am cut out to be a
doctor. After progressing so far in music
and developing my music so much for the
first time I began to question this quest to
be a doctor. In order to see where I stood in
my music career I prepared for the Berklee
College of Music exam and was accepted
with a Dean’s Award. Things don’t always
work out like you plan and here I was with
a plane ticket for Boston and the possibility
of studying at such a school and achieving
things I had only dreamed about. I gave it
a lot of thought and the decision making
was a long process. In the end I chose
Berklee. Next academic year I will leave for
Boston where I will be studying Jazz Vocal
Performance and Songwriting. There are
people I cannot thank enough. First of all
my family who have always supported me,
all my teachers, my friends and someone
whom I could go to for advice anytime,
whose door was always open to me and
who has been more than a teacher to me –
Alkan Bey.

katıldığım tüm etkinlikler arasında biri
var ki yeri bende çok ayrı. Bu sene
gerçekleştirilen 15. Vodafone Liseler Arası
Müzik Yarışması’na yani eski KASDAV’a,
“Pictures of Your Land” adlı uzun bir süredir
üzerinde çalıştığım bestemle katıldık. Başka
bir ülke ve kültürden gelen bir kişiye karşı
duyulan sevgi ve yakınlık hislerini ele alan,
söz ve müziği bana ait olan bu ilk bestemin;
aralarında Olcayto Ahmet Tuğsuz, İskender
Paydaş ve efsanevi Deep Purple grubunun
bateristi olan Ian Paice’in olduğu jüriler
tarafında finalde En İyi Beste ödülüne layık
görülmesi ve bunun yanında benim En İyi
Kız Vokal dalında ikincilik ödülünü almam,
bu yolda ilerlemem adına beni daha da
yüreklendiren ve heyecanlandıran bir işaret
oldu. Final aşamasına kadar beste üzerinde
ben, Alkan Bey ve grup arkadaşlarım büyük
bir özveriyle çalıştık. Beste ilk haline göre
büyük bir aşama kaydetti. Söz ve müzik
yazarı Olcayto Ahmet Tuğsuz beni ve
grup arkadaşlarım Kerem Bayramer, Kaan
Kızıltoprak, Onur Bilgen ve Bora Bardük’ü
As a member of the ACI orchestra for the
last three years there is one event that will
always be special to me and that is this
year’s 15th Vodafone High School Music
competition (formerly KASDAV) which I
entered with my own composition titled:
Pictures of Your Land
which I have been working on for a
considerable time. The piece examines
someone coming from a different country
and culture and the love and friendship
shown this person. The jury comprised
of Olcayto Ahmet Tuğsuz, Iskender
Paydaş and the drummer, Ian Paice, of the
legendary group, Deep Purple. In the finals
I was presented with the award for ‘Best
Composition’ and received second place
for ‘Best Female Vocal’. These awards gave
me more courage to reach my goal. Alkan
Bey, a group of my friends and I worked
on the composition dedicatedly to the
last minute and the piece had definitely
developed positively from its first form.
Myself and some of my friends; Kerem
Bayramer, Kaan Kızıltoprak, Onur Bilgen
and Bora Bardük were called to the stage

sahneye çağırırken “Ben de ilk bestemi
Üsküdar Amerikan’da bir yarışma vesilesiyle
lise 2’de yazmıştım. Oradaki başarım benim
bu işe devam etmemi sağladı. Umarım
kardeş okulumuz olan İzmir Amerikan
Lisesi’ndeki arkadaşlarımız için de böyle
olur” demişti. O anki sevincimi yaşadığım
hiçbir şeye değişmem. Sanırım Olcayto
Bey’in güzel dilekleri gerçek olacak ki şu an
yanımda, biraz dağınık bir defter içerisinde
üstü çizili, karalanmış, üzerinde uğraştığım
birkaç yeni beste tamamlanmak için beni
bekliyor. Vodafone Müzik Yarışması bana
servet değerinde iki plaket, güven ve bir
başlangıcı kazandırmakla kalmadı; en
önemlisi bana kendime verdiğim bir sözü
kazandırdı: Hiçbir şekilde yapacağım
mesleğim konusunda bundan sonra
tereddüt etmeyecektim. Artık kararsızlığım
kesinlikle kaybolmuştu ve benim mesleğim
müzikti. Bu benim kendi seçimimdi ve en
doğru olanıydı.
Bundan sonraki müzik hayatım nerede
devam ederse etsin, girdiğim hiçbir
gruptaki arkadaşlarım ACI’dakiler kadar
keyifli ve tolerans sahibi, hiçbir hocam Alkan
Bey kadar sabırlı ve güvenilir olmayacak.
Hiçbir sahnede de, ACI sahnesinde attığım
o ilk adımın tadını bulamayacağım, bunu
biliyorum.
Kucak dolusu sevgi ve teşekkürlerimle,

Ahmet Tuğsuz. He said, “I composed my
first piece when I was in grade 10 for a
competition at Üsküdar Academy and
my success there was the catalyst for me
continuing with music. I hope that the same
will be true for these friends from our sister
school”. I wouldn’t change anything for the
joy I felt at that moment. I think his good
wishes are to come true as next to me as I
write this is a slightly messy notebook with
some new compositions I am working on,
which is evident from the crossings out
and scribbling, just waiting to be finished.
The Vodafone Music Competition gave me
two very valuable plaques, confidence and
a start in my career but more than this it
fulfilled a promise I had made to myself. I
will have no longer have any doubts about
the career I have chosen. My indecision has
gone because my career is music. This is my
own choice and the right one.
No matter where music takes me, no friends
will be as fun and tolerant as the ones at
ACI, nor will any teacher be as patient and
dependable as Alkan Bey. No stage will
ever give me the same feeling as the first
time I stepped on the stage in the ACI
auditorium did.

aşan bir gelenek devam etti ve Cumartesi
günü gençler eğlence dolu bir “Bazaar Day”
yaşadılar.
Her yıl bir bahar şenliği havasında geçen
Bazaar Day’e bu yıl da ilgi büyüktü. “HIPPIE
BAZAAR” temasının hakim olduğu Bazaar
Day’e katılanlar, gün boyu çeşitli spor ve
eğlence etkinliklerinden yararlandılar. Özel
İzmir Amerikan Koleji’nin dans grupları,
yaptıkları dans gösterileri ile izleyenlerden
büyük alkış aldı. Rönesans Ajans işbirliği
ile düzenlenen ve Özel İzmir Amerikan
Koleji öğrencilerinden Anita Şavul, Kerem
Doğurga, Nazlı Yazaydın, Ceren Yıldırım,
Irmak Güzel’in yanısıra Ece Yöndem ve
Balım Öztokçu’dan oluşan toplam yedi
İzmirli genç modacının tasarımlarının
sergilendiği “Fashion Show”un bir bölümü
yağmura rağmen tamamlandı.
This tradition of Bazaar Day at ACI which
has been going for more than 50 years was
continued this year and the young people
had an amazing entertaining day.
There was a lot of interest in Bazaar Day
this year which took on the air of a spring
festival. This year the theme was ‘Hippy
Bazaar’ and those who came were able
to take advantage of the various sports
and entertaining activities. There was loud
applause for the show put on by ACI’s
Dance Group and despite the rain, ACI
students, Anita Şavul, Kerem Doğurga, Nazlı
Yazaydın, Ceren Yıldırım, Irmak Güzel with
Ece Yöndem and Balım Öztokçu wer able to
complete the fashion show featuring seven
young fashion designers. The Fashion Show
was staged with the help of Rönensans
Ajans.

Blake Oditoryum’da devam eden gün “Öyle
Bir Geçer Zaman ki” dizisinde Mete karakteri
ile tanınan Aras Bulut İynemli’nin konuk
konuşmacı olduğu söyleşi ile devam etti.
Gençler, kendileri gibi genç olan sanatçıya
dizi ve kendi hayatı ile ilgili merak ettikleri
soruları sorma fırsatı yakaladılar.
Bazaar Day, amfinin büyülü ortamında
gerçekleşen ATHENA konseriyle son
buldu. Gençlerin en sevdiği parçaları
okuyan ATHENA, ikinci kez geldiği İzmir
Amerikan Koleji’nde hafızalardan uzun süre
silinmeyecek bir konser verdi.

Kolejinde Yetişenler Derneği’nin katkılarıyla
toplum hizmeti projelerine destek amacına
yönelik olarak düzenlediği bu büyük
organizasyona bu sene Okan Üniversitesi,
Kafe Pi Group, Ekol KBB, PINAR, VOB, TEZOL,
Nescafe, T-box, Tellioğlu, YENKUR, Çamkıran
Honda, Sofra, Kocaer, Starbucks, Jimmy Key,
Folkart, Ekin Ses, Çağdaş Taşımacılık, Adepo,
Tiryaki Ailesi, SBA Advertising, AkzoNobel,
Ege Palas, JUMP Turizm ve Veysi’s gibi
şirketlerin yanısıra birçok mezun ve veli
sponsor olarak destek verdi.
In Blake Auditorium the guest speaker,
young actor Aras Bulut İynemli, who is
better known as ‘Mete’ in the series “Öyle
Bir Geçer Zaman ki” (How Time Passes)
was able to answer the students’ questions
about both the series and his own life.
Bazaar Day closed with Athena’s concert
in the magical atmosphere of the
amphitheatre. They performed their most
popular songs and gave a performance
to be remembered for many years on this
their second visit to ACI.
The purpose of Bazaar Day, organised by
the ACI Student Council with the help of
the Alumni Association, is to raise money
for the social service clubs. The whole
event was sponsored by Okan University,
Kafe Pi Group, Ekol ENT, PINAR, VOB,
TEZOL, Nescafe, T-box, Tellioğlu, YENKUR,
Çamkıran Honda, Sofra, Kocaer, Starbucks,
Jimmey Key, Folkart, Ekin Ses, Çağdaş
Transport, Adepo, the Tiryaki family, SBA
Advertising, AkzoNobel, Ege Palas, JUMP
Tourism and Veysi’s as well as a large
number of graduates and parents.

Amerikan Koleji’ne veda etti.
118 seniors bade farewell to ACI
at a majestic ceremony

134 yıllık geçmişiyle Türkiye’nin en köklü
okullarından olan okulumuz, 2011-2012
mezunlarını her yıl olduğu gibi bu yıl da
amfitiyatrodan başarıya uğurladı. Gecede
mezunlar, aileleri ve öğretmenleriyle
beraber liseye veda ederken sevinç ve
hüzünle karışık saatleri paylaştı.
The American Collegiate Institute, one of
the most prestigious schools in Turkey, with
a history of 134 years held its graduation
ceremony in the amphitheatre, as it
does every year, where the 2011-2012
graduates took leave of their school.

“Eğitim Kafayı Geliştirmek Demektir...”
“EducatIon Is to develop the braIn”
Değerli öğretmenlerim, sayın veliler ve sevgili arkadaşlarım,
Bugünün aslında bir son değil, bizim için yepyeni bir başlangıç
olduğunun farkında olarak konuşmama Ulu Önderimiz Atatürk’ün
bize ışık tutacağına inandığım bir sözüyle başlamak istiyorum.
“Hiçbir zafer, amaç değildir. Zafer, ancak kendisinden daha büyük
bir amacı elde etmek için belli başlı bir araçtır”. Bugün, mezun
olarak elde ettiğimiz zafer, ancak ve ancak önümüzdeki yaşam
yolculuğuna bizi uğurlayan bir araç olmuştur. Daha nice zaferler
elde edeceğimize inancım sonsuz.

Her birimizin her noktasına pek çok anısını sığdırdığı bu yerleşkeyi
arkada bırakırken hissettiğim karmakarışık pek çok şey var; ama
coşkusuyla içime sığmayan sevinçle birlikte, en az onun kadar
yoğun hissettiğim yorgun, kırılgan ve su yüzüne çıkmayı reddeden
hüzün çok ağır basıyor.
...
Bu konuşmayı yazmadan önce, okulumun bana kattığı her şeyin
farkında olduğumu hissediyordum; ama yazmaya başlayınca
bilincine vardım. Mark Twain’in çok sevdiğim bir sözü var: “Eğitim
kafayı geliştirmek demektir, belleği doldurmak değil”. Bu sözle
ilk ne zaman karşılaştım hatırlamıyorum; ama bu konuda benimle
hemfikir olan birini bulmanın mutluluğunu yaşadığımı hatırlıyorum;
çünkü ben de ezberletilen bilgilerin gereksizliğine inanmıştım hep;
çünkü bence eğitim, insanın okulda öğrendiği her şeyi unuttuğunda
arta kalan şeylerdi.

Şu an yeni yeni bilincinde olmaya başladığım ve ileride eminim
ki daha da çok farkına varacağım şey ise: sızlanarak yaptığımız
tüm çalışmaların bize aynı anda birkaç işi, işbirliği ile zamanında
bitirmeyi öğrettiğidir. Zaman yönetimi uzmanı, Uluslararası Yönetim
Enstitüsü’nün başkanı Peter Turla da aynı şeyi söylüyor: “Birden
fazla proje yönetebilmek, beslemek zorunda olduğunuz büyük
bir ailenin ebeveyni olmak gibi. İşinizin her yönü beslenmesi
gereken birbirinden farklı çocuklarınız gibi olabilir. ‘Çocuk’ lardan
herhangi birinin ihmali ile sağlıklı bir aile olunması beklenilemez.
“. Okulumuzda edindiğimiz eğitimin en güzel yani işte bu. Çünkü
bizler yaşamda sadece projelerde değil, daha pek çok alanda
karşımıza çıkacak olan “son teslim tarihleri”nin hepsine elimizden
geldiğince yetişebilmeyi ve akademik alanda sorumluluklarımızı
üstlenirken, sosyal alanda da etkinleşebilmeyi burada öğrendik.

Sevgili arkadaşlarım; önümüzdeki yol uzun ve ben her birimize
önce sağlık, sonra içimizden gelen ve başarmayı hedeflediğimiz
her şeyi yapmamıza izin verecek iç huzuru, yolda engel olarak
nitelendirebileceğimiz her şeyi bir fırsata çevirebilecek hayal gücü
ve kararlılığı, en zor günlerimizde bile olumlu olabilme gücünü ve
tabii ki tüm bunların erişmemizi kolaylaştıracağı başarı ve mutluluğu
diliyorum.
Hepinizi çok seviyorum ve bu inanılmaz okulda geçirmiş olduğum,
bu unutulmaz dört güzel yılım için hepinize çok teşekkür ediyorum.

Dear teachers, parents and friends,
As we realise that today is not the end of something but rather a
new beginning, I would like to begin with some words from our
great leader, Atatürk, who said, “No victory is an ends unto itself.
Victory is merely a vehicle to reach a much greater goal.”. As we
take our victory in graduating today, it is a means to send us off
on our journey through life. I believe that we will have many more
victories to come.
…
Each one of us has many memories squeezed into every part of this
campus and as we leave it behind there are many mixed feelings.
Along with the joy bursting out of me, equally I feel a tiredness, a
fragility and a melancholy which threaten to weigh me down.
…
Before I wrote this speech I believed that I know exactly what
this school had given me but I only truly understood when I
began writing this speech. Mark Twain once said something like
“Education is to develop the brain, not to fill the memory”. I don’t
remember when I first heard this but I was so happy to have
discovered someone with whom I totally agree. I have always
thought that rote learning is pointless because I believe education
is what is left after you have forgotten all the things you learned at
school.
…
I have only just really begun to formulate the answer to that
question and I am sure that in the future I will come to understand
it better. We complained about all the work but it has taught us
to multi-task, to work together and to meet deadlines. Peter Turla,
a time and motion expert and head of The International Institute
of Management agrees. “Managing a number of projects at the
same time is like being the parent of a large family. Your work is like
having to feed children each with a different need. If you neglect
one then you cannot expect to have a healthy family”. This is the
best thing about the education received here at ACI. By keeping
to deadlines for projects we have learned to meet all the deadlines
that life will throw at us while at the same time undertaking all
academic demands put on us and being active socially.

Dear friends; the road before us is long and first I wish each and
every one of us health and then the serenity to achieve our goals.
I also wish for you the imagination and decisiveness to be able to
overcome any thing which poses an obstacle to our lives. I hope
you have the power to stay positive during difficult times and of
course, I wish you success and happiness to make it easier for you
to achieve your goals.
I love all of you and thank you for the four unbelievable years spent
at this school.

Prof.Dr. Derin URAL
Okul Müdürümüz Anet Gomel, Özel İzmir
Amerikan Koleji’nin büyük bir camia ve
geleneklere bağlı bir kurum olduğunu
belirtirken öğrencilerin kendilerini
yaşam boyu eğitmeleri için her türlü
düşünme, öğrenme ve sentez yöntemlerini
aşıladıklarını söyledi. Ardından Genel
Müdür Todd Cuddington genç mezunlara
yaşam boyu başarılar diledi.
Sağlık ve Eğitim Vakfı adına konuşma yapan
Lise Eğitim Koordinatörü Whitman Shepard
mezunları kutlayarak: “Büyük bir mezun
camiasına hoşgeldiniz” dedi.
Arkadaşları tarafından seçilen öğrencilerin
yaptıkları Türkçe ve İngilizce konuşmalardan
sonra üstün başarı gösteren öğrenciler
ödüllendirildi. Okul birincisi ve Atatürk
Ödülü’nün sahibi Ceren Akdeniz olurken,
ikinci Sezin Çömez, üçüncü Zeynep Aslı
Özkan, dördüncü İlayda Bilge Önder
ve beşinci Günce Öztürk oldu. Başarılı
öğrencilere ödüllerini, İl Milli Eğitim
Müdürü Kemalettin Ekici ve Sağlık ve Eğitim
Vakfı’nın yönetim kurulu ve mütevelli üyeleri
verdi.
Mezuniyet törenine İstanbul Teknik
Üniversitesi Rektör Yardımcısı Prof.Dr.Derin
Ural konuk konuşmacı olarak katıldı.
Amerikan Koleji’nden 1985 yılında mezun
olan ve “Fark Yaratan 12 Türk”ten biri
seçilerek 2012 Londra Olimpiyatları’nda
meşaleyi taşıyan Ural, öğrencilere başarılar
dileyerek, “ACI logosundaki meşale ile
olimpiyat arasında çok güzel bir köprü
kurdum. Umarım sizler de sahip olduğunuz
ACI ruhu ile hayatınızda birçok köprüler
kurarsınız” dedi.
Öğrencilikteki en güzel yıllarını yaşayan
mezunlar, okulda edindikleri değerleri ve
gelenekleri üniversitede de yaşatma sözü
verdi.

Present at the ceremony, which was a
mixture of happiness and sorrow, where the
graduates, their families and teachers.
The Turkish First Vice-Principle, Anet Gomel,
spoke of how ACI is one big family and an
institution bound to its traditions where the
students are imbued with the techniques
to think, learn and synthesize beyond their
school years. Following Anet Hanım, the
Director, Todd Cuddington, wished the
graduates a successful future. The High
School Education Coordinator, Whitman
Shepard, representing the Health and
Education Foundation (SEV) congratulated
the students on graduating, saying,
“Welcome to the family of graduates”.
After the speeches given in both Turkish
and English by students selected by
their peers, the students with academic
excellence were presented with awards.
The valedictorian was Ceren Akdeniz who
was presented with the Atatürk Award.
Sezin Çomez came second, Zeynep Aslı
Özkan came third, Ilayda Bilge Önder was
fourth and the fifth was Günce Öztürk.
The awards were presented by Kemalettin
Ekici, the Provincial Director of National
Education, members of the Health and
Education Foundation’s Board of Directors
and members of the Board of Trustees.
The guest speaker was Prof. Dr. Derin Ural
who is the Assistant Rector of Istanbul
Technical University. Prof. Ural graduated
from ACI in 1985 and was chosen as one
of the “Twelve Turks to make a Difference”
and also carried the torch in the run up to
the 2012 London Olympics. She wished the
graduates success. She said,” I formed an
excellent connection between the ACI logo
and the Olympic torch. I hope with the ACI
spirit that you all carry, you will be able to
make many more connections in your lives.”
The new graduates swore to keep alive the
values and traditions they have learned in
school once they are at university.
