INTRODUCTION (TANITIM)
This event is being organized by the Center for Gifted and Talented at Inonu University and
the United States Department of State. The event will be a week-long camp for about 50
gifted and talented students, 6 teachers and numerous volunteers both Turkish and
American. It will include a professional development component for the teachers and
interactive/experiential English learning opportunities for the students, as well as
opportunities to participate in various games, arts and crafts, drama, music and American
baseball activities. The objective of the camp is to improve student language skills, provide
teachers with interactive approaches to language learning using sports and drama, expose
students to aspects of US society and culture, help students learn about Turkish history with
a visit to Aslantepe, provide students with an opportunity to learn about sharing while
preparing a performance of a musical play and, most importantly, have FUN.
Hikmet Geckil, Director of the Center for Gifted and Talented and Carol Weidner, English
Language Fellow, will co-direct the program with the help of Cedric Thompson, guest music
and drama teacher and teacher trainer from Baskent University School in Adana. In addition,
five American English teachers and two Turkish university teachers will work with the
children in small groups. University English students and other area English teachers will also
be helping direct the daily activities, as well as the final musical drama which will be
presented to the parents at a closing banquet ceremony.
This will be an educational and fun program for both the students and teachers and
hopefully be the first of many future such events.

TPR (demonstrate with two students and when they are ready let them see if they can do it without
you, then mix it up and have fun! When someone is ready to speak encourage that: Who can tell a
friend …, keep comprehension checking)
Props Bag: tennis balls, picture set, baseball cap, glove, little slate or white boards, markers (or paper
on a clip board and colored markers), team hats, baseball team names for voting, (democracy demo –
majority wins, sidewalk chalk for hop scotch
