sonra yeniden denizlerde, hayallerinin peflinde… Hedef bu kez:
Dünyan›n Ucu. Pek çok denizcinin düfllerini süsleyen ama yak›n›ndan bile geçmeye cesaret
edemedi¤i, ‘Yedi Denizlerin Everest’i’ ya da ‘Dünyan›n Ucu’ olarak da bilinen Horn Burnu; Osman Atasoy ve yol arkadafl› Sibel
Karasu’yu bekliyor. Bize de serüvenin seyrini izlemek ve bitece¤i
günü merakla beklemek düflüyor. Seyahatin öngörülen var›fl
zaman› 2010 y›l›n›n sonlar›. Serüvenin bitmesine henüz çok varken ve flu an ‘uzaklar’da bir macera yaflan›rken, buyurun konuk
olal›m ünlü çiftin hayallerine…
Horn Burnu’nun cazibesi
Horn Burnu: Amerika K›tas›’n›n
güneyi, Yedi Denizlerin Everest’i, Dünyan›n Ucu, pek çok
denizcinin düflü, az say›da yelkencinin dönmeyi baflarabildi¤i
t›ls›ml› yer… Ama en önemlisi
Osman Atasoy’un en büyük hayali. Peki, onun için ne ifade ediyor Horn Burnu? Osman Atasoy
anlat›yor: “Horn Burnu’nun enlemi 56 derece güneydir. Eski
denizciler flöyle derlermifl; ‘40
derece enleminin alt›nda kanun
yoktur; 50 derece enleminin alt›nda ise Tanr› yoktur.’ ‹nanan
için Tanr› tabii ki her yerdedir.
Denizciler de inançl› insanlard›r.
Bu sular›n ne zorlu yerler oldu¤unu vurgulamak için böyle
denmifl. Horn Burnu bana Güney Okyanuslar›’n›n ›ss›zl›¤›nda
ba¤dafl kurmufl oturan bir devi
hat›rlat›yor. Önünden geçmeye
teflebbüs edenlere ya gazab›n›

1992-1997 y›llar› aras›nda Uzaklar isimli meflhur yelkenlisiyle
yapt›¤› dünya seyahatinin ard›ndan geçen y›l ekim ay›nda yeniden denizlere aç›lan Osman Atasoy’un bu serüvendeki hedefi,
denizlerin gizemli dünyas›n› keflfetmek. Uzaklar II’nin serüvenini

the greatest dream of Osman
Atasoy. And what does Cape
Horn mean to him? Osman Atasoy tells: “Cape Horn lies on the
56 degrees south. Ancient sailors
said; ‘There are no laws below 40
degrees; no God below 50.’ This
is an expression to emphasize
the toughness of these seas. Cape Horn reminds me of an ogre,
squatting down in the solitude of
Southern Oceans. For those who
dare to pass by, he sends his
wrath, or whispers in his ear. Hopefully for us the second applies.” The idea of going over Cape
Horn falls in Osman Atasoy’s
mind on his first travel of the
world in 1992. By a plastic ball
with the world map on, which he
bought for his daughter Deniz,
who was born during the journey.

Hep merak konusudur teknede
zaman›n nas›l geçti¤i, hayat›n nas›l sürdü¤ü. Osman Atasoy ve
Sibel Karasu için yelkenlide zaman oldukça h›zl› geçiyor. Çünkü
on the long ocean crossing. That
was when he became enchanted
by Cape Horn. Swayed by a plastic ball, Atasoy’s adventurous soul was indeed the key that opened the logbook of the journey.
When asked how he decided to
embark on a second adventure
on boundless seas, he answers:
“I believe Cape Horn has a unique charm. When the idea of traveling there falls in mind, the decision is final. You run after the dream as if enchanted. Most long
distance sailors dream of going
over this wild and isolated cape at
the end of the world.”
It’s time for the seas’
mysteries
Hitting the seas last October once again after his world travel on
his sailboat ‘Afar’ in 1992-1997,
Atasoy aims to discover the
mysteries of the seas. He describes the journey: “The first jour-

koymak, seyir defterini tutmak,
ufak tefek tamiratla u¤raflmak,
yemek haz›rlamak, bal›k tutmaya
çal›flmak, foto¤raf ve video çekmek, gidilecek yerlere ait k›lavuz
kitaplar› çal›flmak ve daha bir sürü fley… Peki, ifl bölümü nas›l?
Atasoy’dan teknedeki ifl bölümüyle ilgili birkaç ipucu almay›
da unutmad›k: “Uzun yol teknelerinde geleneksel ev iliflkileri geçerli de¤ildir. Görevler karada oldu¤u gibi cinsiyete göre s›n›flanm›yor. Yani kad›n yemek yapar,
bulafl›k y›kar, erkek d›flar›da çal›fl›r gibi fleyler söz konusu olmuyor. S›ras› geldi¤inde herkesin
her ifli yapmas› bekleniyor.”

much to do: coordinating the sails, shifts of two or three hours,
depending on weather conditions, navigating on the map, writing the logbook, taking care of
small errands, cooking, fishing,
photo and video shooting, studying guide books about the places to go and much more…
What about the division of labour? Atasoy gives hints: “Traditional domestic rules do not apply
on long distance boats. Labour is
not divided gender-wise, as on
land. Everyone does whatever it
takes.”
Life on board is fast. And
the duties are not gender
classified as on land.

uca dolaflmak. Osman Atasoy
iflte o az say›daki flansl› insanlardan. Tek s›k›nt›s› Türkiye’deki k›z›n› çok özlüyor olmas›:
“Akl›m ve kalbim onunla,” diyor. Peki, bu serüven baflka ne
de¤ifltirdi/de¤ifltirecek onlar›n
yaflam›nda: “Dünyan›n hemen
her yerinde, insanlar kendilerine göre günlük al›flkanl›klar
edinmifller. Bu al›flkanl›klar
anahtar› olmayan bir kelepçe
gibi onlar› tutsak etmifl! Ama
ço¤u bunun fark›nda bile de¤il,
yaflad›klar›n› sanarak ömürlerini tüketiyorlar. Ancak bunu görebilmek, onlar gibi olmamak

geçip dönüfle bafllamay› planl›yor. Küçük bir not: ‘Uzaklar
II’nin seyrini ve yolculukta ne-
ney was a journey of hwyling.
Now, it is a journey to the mysterious world of the seas. A different journey it is. Hard to tell. We
are traveling to a world apart, remained unchanged since thousands of years, holding out on the
dominion of mankind.” Sibel Karasu accompanies him on this
jouney to the seas’ mysteries.
They are going to travel approximately 19 thousand seamiles in
their adventure on ‘Afar II’, as
noone can imagine what surprises the sea has in store.

Notes from the journey
Not everybody has the chance of
traveling the world on a sailboat.
Osman Atasoy is one of the lucky
few. His only distress is missing
his daughter in Turkey very much:
“I’ve got my mind and heart set
on her,” he says. And what has
this journey changed/will change
in their lives? “All around the
world, people have a daily routine.
And they became the slaves of it!
Yet most are not aware of it,
spending their lives thinking they
are living. But noticing this does
not mean being different. Unfortunately neither I am. But our journey still goes on. Who knows,
perhaps we can find the keys to
these handcuffs as we move
on!” We found the couple on Cape Verde Islands on East Atlantic.
They plan to start turning Cape
Horn in January-February. One
tiny note: you may follow the cruise and her adventure on the official website www.osmanatasoy.org and Atasoy’s articles in
Motor Boat & Yachting magazine.
Besides, Osman Atasoy plans to
collect his travel notes in a book,
when the journey ends. But before the book, a documentary movie will meet the audience. As we
have been informed, the first episode of the documentary of Atasoy and Karasu is ready and will
probably be broadcasted this fall.
