Kamusal Tasarım Desteği
In November 2011 the Studio for Experimental Design of the HFBK Hamburg started its
public design consultations in St. Pauli. Every Wednesday afternoon it offers assistance
in researching and solving everyday problems
of the residents in the local community center.
Kasım 2011’de, HFBK Deneysel Tasarım Stüdyosu St.Pauli’de kamusal tasarım danışmanlığını
başlattı. Deneyse Tasarım Stüdyosu çarşamba
öğleden sonraları, yerel halk merkezinde
vatandaşın gündelik problemlerini çözüm getirecek araştırma ve destek sundu.
Students advise potential clients with any kind of
(design) problems. People who otherwise could not
afford to hire professional designers, are supported to develop problems and to investigate several
solution strategies in a collaborative design process. The Public Design Support is an approach to
intervene in local processes by encouraging residents to take the initiative, in order to raise social
and design issues and to work on them. The studio
provides practical assistance for self-reliant action
and it tries to promote discussion of the development of collective claims and alternative conceptions of urban life.
Öğrenciler, potansiyel müşterilerinin herhangi bir
tasarım problemini çözebilecek önerilerde bulundular. Profesyonel tasarımcıya ücret ödeyebilecek
bütçesi olmayanlar insanlara, katılımcı tasarım
süreci ile birçok çözüm stratejisini araştıran ve
geliştirerek destek verdiler. Kamusal Taasarım
Desteği, sosyal ve tasarım meselelerini ortaya çıkaran ve üzerinde çalışmak konusunda
vatandaşı insiyatif almaya cesaretlendirerek yerel
sürece müdahale ve katkıda bulunmaya çalışan bir
yaklaşımdır.

Lidl WG
Our first client Johanna reported about her cold
and poorly heated shared flat. The apartment used
to be commercial space and therefore has been
let illegally and over-priced. Although the best solution would have been a fast move out, the problem of the cold had to be solved for the short term.
Following the igloo principle, we went for the approach to use human body heat to overcome the
coldness by bringing the housemates together. In
order to manage this gathering we needed to create space in the hallway first. Afterwards the free
space could be reconquered in a collective D.I.Y.

İlk müşterimizi Johanna soğuk ve yetersiz ısıtması
olan dairesi hakkında bize bilgi verdi. Apartman aslında ticari bir mekan olarak kullanılmış;
bu nedenle gayriresmi ve pahalı bir şekilde kiraya veriliyor. Isıtması olmayan bu binadan hızlıca
taşınmak belki en iyi opsiyon fakat kısa süreli de
olsa ısıtma problemini çözülmesi lazımdı. Soğuk

Due to heaps of dumped packaging material by
Lidl supermarket next door, we decided to use
a simple technique of arrangement in layers to
transform cardboard leftovers into furniture. With
a consciously reduced stencil and the use of tension belts for fixation an easy built piece of furniture
developed. Depending on material input and effort
the object can vary from a small stool to a long
bench.
Lidl markette istiflenmil ve bir işe yaramayan paket
kutularını alıp basit teknikler ile yeni aranjmanlarla
mobilyalara dönüştürdük. Küçük bir sandalyeden
oturma sırasına kadar azaltılmış tensil ve farklı
kullanımdaki kemerler gibi farklı araçlar kullanarak
kolayca yeni mobilyalar yaptık.

Sailor‘s Inn

Denizci Hanı
The Sailor’s Inn, an old and smoky seamen’s bar,
had been temporary relocated last year due to
construction work. The new place was poorly attended. Not only the location and the accessibility
were disastrous. The former cosy, rustic and authentic charm of the Sailor’s Inn had been replaced
by the cold atmosphere which normally dominates
in an accounting office. While we and the bar operators tried, by little changes, to make the space
more comfy for the period till the move back, the
old building collapsed due to a consciously or unintentionally incorrectly managed construction site.

bir denizci barı. Bu bar, bir inşaat yüzünden geçen
sene geçici olarak başka yere alındı. Barın yeni
yerinde katılım çok azdı. Barın lokasyonu ve
ulaşılabilirliği vahimdi fakat dahası; barın sıcak,
samimi, otantik ve rustik ortamı tamamen muhasebe ofislerinde görebileceğiniz sıkıcı bir atmosfer
ile yer değiştirmişti. Bir yandan bar sahipleri ile
eski bir süreliğine rahat edebilmeleri için ufak tefek
değişiklikler yapmya çalıştıysak da; o sırada eski
bar binası, hatalı ve bilinçsiz yönetilen inşaat alanı
yüzünden tamamen yıkıldı.
We had to act quickly and took care of the biggest
problem: the suspended ceiling with 125 tiles. With
simple black and white copies on conventional paper we were able to to quickly, inexpensively and
reversibly change the lighting conditions and ambiance enormously. We used a rasterized version
of a photo of the old building during the demolition.
The image can easily be replaced with the same
effort and costs at any time.
Çok hızlı davranmak zorundaydık ve en büyük
sorunu kontrol altına aldık: 125 tuğladan oluşan
geçici olarak korunmuş tavan. Bildiğimiz basit
siyah ve beyaz kopya kağıdı ile eski binanın dış
görüntüsünü kopyaladık ve oldukça başarılı bir
sonuç elde ettik. Bu kopya kağıtlarını yapışkan
bant ile kolayca çıkartılabilecek tavan panellerine yapıştırdık. Görüntüler eski binanın yıkılma
sırasındaki fotoğrafini ızgara bir tasarım ile görüntüledik. Bu imge istenildiği zaman çok ucuza ve
pratik bir şekilde başka bir imge ile değiştirilebilinir.

The Esso Buildings

Esso Binaları
The Esso buildings in St.Pauli, an unique and diverse mixture of social housing, a line of shops and
an Esso gas station, shall be demolished to make
way for a new building. A residents’ initiative, planning an event for the tenants, asked us for design
assistance. They were organising so-called Pavilion Days to enable the tenants to create an alternative concept for the preservation of the buildings.
Benzersiz ve farklı sosyal konutlardan oluşan bir
karışım olan “Esso” binaları St.Pauli semtinde bulunmakta. Yeni bir bina yapımı için, dükkanların
bulunduğu hat ve gaz istasyonu yıkılmak isteniyordu. Bir konut inisiyatifi kiracıları için bir etkinlik
planlıyordu ve bize tasarım desteği için başvurdu.
Kiracılarının binaları için alternatif koruma konseptleri geliştirebilmeleri için “pavyon günleri” adlı bir
etkinlik organize ediyorlardı.
We designed an invitation in form of a paper template for a model of the buildings. The resulting paper models should support the residents to express
their ideas in advance of the event. The collection
of these ideas should initiate the Pavilion Days. We
also built a big model with autoclaved aerated concrete blocks for the actual event to provide a basis
for reproducing the collected ideas. The remaining
concrete block model was afterwards transformed
into a bench and a big communal barbecue.
“Esso” binalarının modeli üzerinden bir davetiye şablonu tasarladık. Bu tasarlanan matbunun
amacı kiracıların bu etkinlik üzerine fikirlerini öncelikli bir şekilde ortaya koymalarını desteklemekti. Bu fikirlerin toplamı da “pavyon günleri”
başlatmalıydı. Ayrıca, bu etkinlikte kulllanılabilecek
büyük bir AAC model (birbirine yapışıp ayrılabilen
gaz betondan bloklar) tasarladık. Bu AAC model
daha sonra oturma yeri ve mangal yapmak için bir
fonksiyona dönüştü.

At the end of November Sargam came to our Public
Design Support and depicted us following housing
situation: his narrow kitchen was under construction. His hallway was packed with boxes and all
kinds of objects. His bedroom was stuffed with kitchen furniture and about 100 lamps from Sargam‘s
former shop. His collector‘s passion intensified the
lack of space. Additionally his bed was broken.

Desteğine gelerek konutunun durumu hakkında
bilgi Verdi: dar mutfağı inşaat halindeydi. Evi,
eşyalarının olduğu kutularla ve yatak odası mutfak malzemeleri ile ve eski dükkanından kalan 100
lamba ile ağzına kadar doluydu. Boş alanlarda, kolleksiyoner arzusu yüzünden zaten yoğun eşya ile
kaplanmıştı. Üzerine de yatağı kırıktı.
We suggested him to categorize his belongings:
things he wants to keep, sell, give away and dump.
We gave him advice how to sell his lamps. Furthermore we offered him to fix his bed and a broken wardrobe door. Temporarily we didn‘t hear
anything from Sargam. Construction noise got to
him and he suffered from general frustration. In an
unexpected message he let us know his renovation was a success and he asked for further assistance. We visited him again, repaired the wardrobe
door und made plans to fix the bed. Later we lost
contact again.

The Niebuhr-High Rise

“Niebuhr” – yüksek
The Niebuhr-high rise project deals with the subject
of building ‘’vertical communities’’. Two residents of
the multi-storey building asked us for assistance to
find space for a communal room.

We considered several spaces and examined
feasibility and quality. To rent a communal apartment or to use the hallway appeared to be the best
solution. We didn’t want to act with precipitation
and therefore we decided to focus less on a specific place and more on the true process of community building. We initiated a Punsch Evening
to bring the house resident together. Temporarily
tension mounted bar furniture saved walls and ceiling and transformed the dead hallway space into a
communal bar. The residents organised a following
collective event on their own.
Hhem fizibilite hem de kalite anlamında binada birçok yeri gözden geçirdik. Ortak bir alanı kiralamak
veya giriş holünü kullanmak bize en uygunu gözüktü. Telaşla hareket etmek istemiyorduk bu nedenle
mekana fazla odaklanmadık, onun yerine yeniden
bir topluluk/cemaat inşa etme, oluşturmanın süreci
üzerine odaklandık. Binada yaşayan tüm sakinleri
bir araya getiren bir etkinlik düzenledik. Etkinlik, ölü
giriş holünün umumi bir toplanma yerine, bir bara
dönüşmesine sağladı. Daha sonar bina sakinleri
bu holde kendi etkinliklerini yapmaya başladılar.
