Başaran Ulusoy Once again, Nobel Prize-winning author Orhan Pamuk is candidate for yet another prize; this time in the field of museology. Yes, the museum Orhan Pamuk opened in İstanbul, naming it after his acclaimed novel “Museum of Innocence”, is among the candidates for the London Design Museum’s “Best Designs of the Year Prize”. This is one of the world’s most prestigious events of its kind, where selected architecture, furniture, fashion and graphic designs as well as outstanding museum projects of the year are competing. The fact that the Museum of Innocence was created by a Nobel Laureate certainly added to its attraction. Turkey came forward in recent years with its achievements in the area of arts and museums. In particular, the restitution to Turkey of a series of artefacts belonging to its historical heritage which had been taken out of the country constitutes a success that should be recognized. Another remarkable aspect of these developments is the recent rise of private museums in Turkey, established either by individual initiatives or some institutions. In this regard, Pamuk’s “Museum of Innocence”, as well as the two museums established by the “Darüşşafaka Society” (a charity organization founded in 1863 with the mission of providing education to orphan and needy children) are striking examples deserving admiration. The Darüşşafaka Society completed a four-year restoration of the “Sait Faik Abasıyanık Museum” at Burgaz Island, re-opening its door on May 11, the anniversary of the passing away of the author. The Darüşşafaka Society’s second museum, located on its Maslak campus, offers a unique exhibition consisting of teaching materials, student uniforms, lecture notes and lithographic books reflecting the 150-year history of the Darüşşafaka School and paintings donated to the Society by benefactors. On our part, we strive to support these and similar efforts through the magazine in your hands. Because we never forget that museums are the core of a country’s memory and actually constitute its greatest wealth. DÖSİMM’in temel faaliyetleri bunlar. DÖSİMM’in başarıyla büyümesini neye bağlıyorsunuz? DÖSİMM’in 2008 yılı gelir bütçesi 155 milyon TL seviyelerindeydi. 2013 yılında ise öngörülen geliri 380 milyon TL’dir. DÖSİMM’in son 5 yılda bütçe büyüklüğü 2,5 kat arttı. DÖSİMM (REVOLVING FUND ADMINISTRATION) IN CARE OF OUR CULTURAL HERITAGE Since its inception, DÖSİMM played a great role in the promotion of our country’s cultural, touristic and artistic heritage as an organization that operates using only its own resources. Its main task is to provide financing for the protection and transmission to future generations of our national cultural heritage, its worldwide promotion and the development of infrastructure in this field. The Revolving Fund Central Directorate of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism (DÖSİMM), is an organization investing in touristic and cultural infrastructure, by using only its own resources without receiving a share from the overall State budget. Since 1979, this organization is dedicated to the worldwide promotion of our country’s cultural heritage. We talked to Çetin Arslan, the Central Director of DÖSİMM, to learn more about the achievements of his organization and its future projects. Museums Journal: DÖSİMM plays an important role in the promotion of Turkey’s cultural, artistic and touristic assets. Would you please introduce us your organization? Çetin Arslan: The Revolving Fund Central Directorate is a public legal entity set up in accordance with Law No. 2252 of 19 June 1979, establishing the Ministry of Culture’s Revolving Fund. As you said, since its inception, it played a great role in the promotion of our country’s cultural, touristic and artistic heritage as an organization that operates using only its own resources. We are providing each year increasing amounts of funds to projects aimed at the protection and transmission to future generations of our national cultural heritage, its worldwide promotion and the development of infrastructure in this field. Those are DÖSİMM’s main domains of activity. Currently we are in the process of developing a new logo and corporate identity which will be soon presented to the public. DÖSİMM Central Director Çetin Arslan at the dinner held in the framework of the “Come along Youth to Museums” project (right) and the “Visualization and Monitoring Centre” in Ankara (above) DÖSİMM is an organization which continues to grow constantly, as shown by the improvements in the museums and historical sites. What is the secret of DÖSİMM’s success? DÖSİMM had a revenue budget of 155 million Turkish Liras (TL) in 2008. Its projected income for 2013 is 380 million TL. DÖSİMM’s budget registered a 2,5-fold increase in the last five years. While we closed the year 2007 with an operating loss of approximately 15 5 “2007 yılını yaklaşık 15 milyon TL faaliyet zararı ile kapatan DÖSİMM’in, 2013’ü yaklaşık 34 milyon TL faaliyet karı ile kapatacağını düşünüyoruz...” “DÖSİMM closed the year 2007 with an operating loss of approximately 15 million; it expects an operating profit of 34 million TL at the end of 2013.” million, we expect an operating profit of 34 million TL at the end of 2013. The entrance fees from museums and historical sites brought an income of TL 26 million in 2002. At the end of 2013 that number is projected to reach revenue of $ 265 million. This enormous increase of 978 per cent in 10 years, is the result of the investment in access control systems and the rigorous application of public income raising rules. On May 4, we reached an all-time high with 113 thousand 233 people total daily number of visitors. This success is the fruit of our active efforts in the field of marketing and promotion since the beginning of 2013. ■ Faaliyet alanı bununla bitmiyor tabii. DÖSİMM’in diğer faaliyet alanlarından da söz eder misiniz? CTM Conference In 2015, we plan to organize for the first time in İstanbul a “Communicating the Museum (CTM)” conference, to be held exclusively for museum professionals. The Conference is destined to become a global brand as one of the most prestigious conferences in the field of museums’ communication. We aim to convert the opportunity into an international public relations campaign for the worldwide promotion of Turkish museums. The purpose of the conference which will adopt an innovative participatory format will be to create an international platform in İstanbul where experts and professionals can share their views and experiences through debates, workshops and discussion groups. We believe that the momentum created through a prestigious conference such as CTM will contribute to İstanbul’s worldwide positioning as a prime destination in terms of culture, art and tourism. 6 Museums Journal: The scope of your endeavours is wider than that as we know. Would you please tell us about DÖSİMM’s other areas of activity? Our main task has to do with providing the museums and historical places with state-of-the-art technology and offering visitors the benefit of high-efficiency equipment and service. We are implementing since 2009, the “Museums and Historical Sites’ Sales Areas and Commercial Activities Management, Implementation, Development, Product and Service Procurement Project” in cooperation with an organization called “Bilkent Cultural Initiative”. This is a joint venture involved in establishing and operating museum stores and cafeterias in all museums and historical sites, similar to those existing in most major museums of the world, with a view to increasing the share of commercial operations within the total amount of income from museums and historical sites. While there were only 11 sales units in our museums before this project, we now run, as of January 2013, a total of 100 sales units including 57 stores and 43 cafés at 50 museums and historical sites, called into operation without the use of any public funds. The “Traditional Handicrafts and Stores Operations Directorate” (GES), which is under DÖSİMM’s administration, is conducting efforts for the promotion, marketing and development of traditional handicrafts including research, production support through purchase and distribution of the publications of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. We have 9 GES stores and the “Traditional Handicrafts Virtual Store” at the (www.ges.gov.tr) web site for online sales. We also aim at transforming GES into an institute that provides training and accreditation through collaboration with artists and universities. How would you describe your contributions to the activities of the Ministry? DÖSİMM provides support to the activities of the Ministry, in terms of the cleaning and security services of excavation and surface re- DÖSİMM Merkez Müdürü Çetin Arslan “Haydi Gençler Müzeye” projesi kapsamında çeşitli illerden İstanbul’a getirtilen öğrencilere hediyelerini veriyor. DÖSİMM Central Director Çetin Arslan presents gifts to the students from different provinces visiting İstanbul within the “Come along Youth to Museums” project. “On May 4, we reached an all-time high with 113 thousand 233 people total daily number of visitors...” Innovative promotion projects In terms of tourism promotion projects, we began to elaborate innovative methods to improve competitiveness. In 2013, we would like to bring to the fore the capital city’s cultural and historical assets through a project adopted by the Ankara Development Agency. We will create three-dimensional images of 30 of Ankara’s historical and cultural symbols through mobile applications. Also, we will provide virtual visit possibility for 10 of Ankara’s cultural and historical assets and arrange route optimization for selected sites in Ankara. search areas, electricity, water, heating, maintenance and small-scale repair needs of museums, cultural centres and historical sites, as well as concerning comprehensive restoration of museums and historical sites. We also provide support to the Ministry in their promotional activities abroad. Could you please dwell upon the innovative technological applications aimed at making life easier for museum visitors? Yes, we have the “Q Code” application at our museums; by dialling the code of a particular artefact on display at the museum, you can receive detailed information on that item on your mobile phone. We have interactive applications at our museums in Ankara. We also offer electronic voice-guide-devices in several languages to our visitors. Moreover, our virtual museum visit applications are worth taking a look at. Currently we are working on transferring into the digital environment the prestigious publications that are in the possession of the Ministry and the written and visual material from the Ministry’s General Directorate of Libraries and Publications, with a view to making them accessible to the public. Also in the coming period, we intend to convert the Museums Pass “Müzekart” into a “city card” offering its users several new advantages in terms of access to culture and art events, transport facilities besides its existing features. We created to the benefit of our foreign visitors the “Museumpass Cappadocia” in addition to the already existing “Museumpass İstanbul”. Finally, would you please tell us about the project called “Come along Youth to Museums”? Within this project, many children from all over Turkey came to İstanbul and entered a museum maybe for the first time in their lives. Thanks to this project a group of 87 people composed of students and teachers - 38 from Diyarbakır, 17 from Mardin, 16 from Şanlıurfa and 16 from Van - came to İstanbul during Museums Week. They visited Topkapı Palace Museum, İstanbul Archaeological Museums and Hagia Sophia Museum. We also hosted 20 children and 4 guidance counsellors from the Eyüp Chapter of the Child Protection Agency at the İstanbul Archaeological Museums, accompanied by professional guides. Such activities give us reason for pride. All our work aims at creating a better future for our children and enhancing their participation in cultural and artistic activities. We intend to increase the number of such events in the future. 7 Ankara Anadolu Medeniyetleri Müzesi I Ankara Museum of Anatolian Civilizations I Anadolu’nun Klasik Çağları ankara anadolu medeniyetleri müzesi’nin alt katında yeni bir düzenlemeye gidilerek eserler çağdaş bir sergilemeye kavuştu. Museum’s Entrance Gate and views from inside the lower floor. Alt katın “Anadolu’nun Klasik Çağları” adlı bölümünde sıralanmış vitrinler şu başlıkları taşıyor: Adak Stelleri, Bronz Figürler, Metal Eserler, Aydınlatma Araç Gereçleri, Antik Dünyada Cam, Antik Çağ Anadolu Takıları, Antik Gemler ve Yüzükler, Antik Çağ Sikkeleri, Bizans Sikkeleri, Roma Sikkeleri, Eski Yunan Sikkeleri, İslami Sikkeler, Yunan ve Roma Heykeltıraşlık Eserleri, Seramik Kaplar, Pişmiş Toprak Figürler. “Aydınlatma Araç Gereçleri” adlı vitrin üstte. The public continues to visit the museum in great numbers notwithstanding the fact that many of the most valuable pieces are displayed in a provisional manner at the upper floor and that various other significant artefacts are missing from the showcases. While the construction work is still pursued at the main sections, the museum’s bottom floor was totally refurbished in a contemporary style. The different but harmonious colours of the showcases re-arranged according to a thematic exhibition concept, the stylish bilingual information panels and the artefacts’ descriptive tags mirror the shine of the objects with jewels like meticulousness. Due to space scarcity, we are not able to reflect in this issue the artefacts of the bottom floor, displayed in two different categories, namely “Ankara through the Ages” and “Classical Ages of Anatolia” in their entirety. Therefore, we are offering you only the ‘Classical Ages of Anatolia’ section this time over, while reserving the ‘Ankara through the Ages’ section for our next issue. The headings of the showcases located in the “Classical Ages of Anatolia” section are as follows: Votive Steles, Bronze Figurines, Metal Artefacts, Illumination Instruments, Glass in the Ancient World, Ancient Anatolian Jewellery, Ancient Gems and Finger Rings, Ancient Coins, Byzantine Coins, Roman Coins, Ancient Greek Coins, Islamic Coins, Greek and Roman Sculptures, Pottery, Terra Cotta Figures. Rijksmuseum, the national museum of the Netherlands, which closed its doors to visitors in December 2003 for the most serious restoration of its 125-year-old history, was re-opened on April 13, 2013 after a decade-long restoration period. The day of the re-opening of the museum, eagerly awaited by museum and art circles of the world, was the scene of great celebrations. The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam houses a large number of canvases from the Golden Age of Dutch painting, including world-famous masterpieces of Johannes Vermeer, Frans Hals and Rembrandt, alongside a large collection of Asian art. After a decade-long renovation, the opening ceremony held on 13 April 2013 took start with the performances of a large orchestra consisting of 750 musicians from the 12 provinces of the country and from various overseas territories linked to the Netherlands. Queen Beatrix’s official opening address was followed by fireworks and therefrom until midnight, the museum was filled with the guests participating in the special tour organized for the opening. On that particular night, 20 thousand people eager to see the new face of the museum had an opportunity to roam free through the most special parts of the museum. On Sunday, April 14 at 9:00 am, all parts of the museum were opened to visitors. During the few weeks period from March 20 to April 13 preceding the opening, 75 thousand tickets were sold over the internet. The museum was reborn The decade-long labour spent at the Rijksmuseum cannot be considered a mere restoration or renovation work, it would be more correct to qualify it as a process resulting into the re-birth of a 125-year-old museum. Rijksmuseum is testimony to the fact that art and history do not only belong to the past. In addition to being a temple for lovers of art and history, the museum proves, through the training programs and events it organizes, the important social functions that museums fulfill in the 21st Century. Rijksmuseum’s initial foundations were laid when the National Art Gallery established in The Hague in 1800, moved to Amsterdam in 1808. In 1876, a “museum building design competition” was opened for the establishment of the museum and the contest was won by Dutch architect Pierre Cuypers. The spectacular building designed by the architect Cuypers became operational in 1885 and the museum describing the 800-year-old history of the Netherlands from the Middle Ages up to the present-day, managed to gather in time a collection of nearly one million objects including the most exclusive masterworks of Dutch art. After the decision was taken in 2000 to restore the building and to renovate the museum’s galleries, Spanish architects Antonio Cruz and Antonio Ortiz were appointed as chief architects for the task. The 18 rına sadık kalındı. The Museum Library, which is the largest art history library of the Netherlands, was opened to visitors for the first time in its long history after the completion of the renovation work. The contents and concept of the museum were also revamped. The idea was to present the art of the Netherlands from the late Middle Ages up to the present-day through an innovative concept. The motto here ought to be “sense of time and beauty”. The cultures of distant countries where the Dutch went to live and also cultures of those people who settled later in the Netherlands were also included in this concept. Under this new arrangement, the Rijksmuseum brought to the fore all its special collections. Porcelain, silver, jewellery, glass objects, ceramics, weapons, and model ships... A total of 8000 objects are currently on display in the museum’s 80 galleries. A 1,5 km walk is required to visit all the galleries. The museum has a total area of 30 thousand square meters, with 12 thousand square meters of exhibition space. The historic Teekenschool (Drawing School), now totally refurbished and restored to full glory, is operating as a multidisciplinary education centre where youngsters can develop their creative talents in a variety of media, inspired by the Rijksmuseum collection. On yıl süren restorasyon ve renovasyon süresince, müzenin koleksiyonundan seçilmiş yaklaşık 400 eser, “Şaheserler” isimli sergi kapsamında, “Philips Kanadı” adı verilen ve 1906’da yıkılmış binaların parçalarından inşa edilmiş olan bölümde sergilenmiş ve Amsterdam ziyaretçilerinin müze hakkında “tadımlık” da olsa bir fikir sahibi olmaları sağlanmıştı. restores the school building to its original function, but readapted to the needs of the present-day. The interior design of the museum was tailored by Jean-Michel Wilmotte, a name which became familiar to the public through his work at the Museum of the Louvre in Paris. Lighting and showcases were designed by Wilmotte. The colours of the walls in the interior were chosen by chief architects Cruz and Ortiz, adhering to the original colour spectrum of 125 years ago. The number of two million visitors a year is targeted The museum’s collection includes almost one million registered objects. The building is also equipped with a 300 square meters large store, a restaurant and two coffee shops. The Rijksmuseum in her new outfit aims to host between 1,5 to 2 million visitors per year. The renovation of the museum was carried out with a budget of 375 million Euros. This budget was gathered through the contributions of the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science, and of Philips, BankGiro Lottery, ING Bank and Dutch Landline and Mobile Telecommunications Company KPN as sponsors. Another important point is the fact the museum continued to attract art and history lovers from all over the world during the time it was closed for years. During the decade of restoration and renovation, about 400 works of art selected from the museum’s collection, continued to be presented to the public within the scope of the “Masterpieces” exhibition, which took place in the section called the “‘Philips Wing”, built from the remains of buildings demolished in 1906; thus offering Amsterdam visitors the chance to have an idea of the museum albeit with only a “little zest” of the huge collection. Some of the figures... • Over 8 thousand pieces exhibited in 80 galleries of the renewed museum describe the 800-year-old Dutch history. • A stroll of 1,5 km is required to visit a total of 80 galleries. While the number of galleries is 80, the total number of the pieces of the collection is 1.000.000. • The museum has now the capacity to accommodate 1,5 to 2 million visitors per year. • It has 30.000 square meters total area, 12.000 m2 exhibition spaces, an Atrium of 2.250 m2 and 14.418 m2 of garden. He is wearing a mantlelike outfit probably to protect himself following a heavy exercise. His small and round head with the distinct eyelashes, lips, big eyes and slightly opened lips is remarkable. It is a unique piece among ancient artefacts found to date; probably a statue which was decorating a gymnasium. It is also an interesting example showing that in the Antiquity, not only gods, goddesses and emperors were depicted in sculptures but also ordinary people. İşte o “meşhur”u görmek için Kestane Dağları’nın güneyindeki platodayız. Tralleis Antik Kenti’ndeyiz. That province known for its figs and tobacco possesses yet another famous beauty. We are talking about the Tralleis ancient city located on the plateau south of the Chestnut Mountains. According to Greek historian Strabo, Tralleis was founded by the Argives and Trallians, a Thracian tribe, following the Dorian migrations in the 13th Century BC, on the fertile lands of the Menderes River (Meander) Basin. It has been for many years the region’s most important commercial and cultural city. Another version has it that Tralleis was founded by Tralla who was an Amazon fighter and that the city was named after her. Its geographical location within the fertile Menderes basin and on the trade routes of Western Anatolia contributed to the enrichment of the city. Partial accounts about the early periods of the city can be found in Xenophon’s written works Hellenika and Anabasis. However, since a great part of these works were destroyed, the data are incomplete. Nevertheless we are able to affirm that, such as the other ancient cities of the Aegean region, Tralleis was enriched thanks to the generosity of the surrounding nature. Although not as famous as its neighbour Ephesus, Tralleis was an important city of the time. Moreover, in terms of surface area it was broader than Ephesus. The only building left standing in Tralleis today, the 2nd Century Gymnasium called “Three Eyes” by the populace, was an important institution of the Antique Age in terms of sports and culture. The ruins of the baths, agora, theatre and stadium from the Roman Period which can also be seen there are not so well-preserved. The scholars and students of the Archaeology Department of the Aydın University continue diligently the excavations and hope to unearth the missing parts of the various monuments. Raids and earthquakes destroyed the city Tralleis went through various episodes in its history. It was handed back and forth frequently between the 29 ünlenmiş. 30 Hellenistic kingdoms following the conquest by Alexander the Great in 334 BC. The city reached its zenith in sculpture and the arts under the rule of the Kingdom of Pergamon. Two great sculptors Apollonios and Tauriskos, who were charged with the construction of the famous Zeus Altar in Pergamon, were trained in Tralleis. Greek historian Strabo mentioned the richness of the people in the city. Tralleis was famous for its leather products and red pottery, ‘terra sigillata’. Statues of the Farnese Bull and the Young Athlete (Ephebos) carved by two world famous sculptors, Apollonios and Tauriskos, were among the wonders unearthed in Tralleis. Anthemios, a famous architect who worked at the construction of the Hagia Sophia, was also trained in the city. Tralleis never experienced shortage of food in any time thanks to the fertile lands of Menderes River. Therefore, art and architecture developed here and the city raised outstanding Kentten görüntüler, Aydın Arkeoloji Müzesi’nde sergilenen eserlerden Roma Dönemi Çocuk Heykeli (sol sayfa), kentin su borularından bir kesit (solda) ve müze girişindeki Seikilos panosu (üstte). Tralleis’in şarkısı evine döneceği günü bekliyor thinkers and architects. Living in peace and producing art for many years, the city’s decline began under the pressure of Roman attacks. In 133 BC it became a Roman dependency for a time. After that, it started to lose its cultural productivity. During the Byzantine Empire period, Tralleis was placed under the administration of the Anatolian Patriarchate. However, Andronikos Palaiologos, the Byzantine Emperor who ruled between 1259 and 1282, has re-established the city and restored its independence. During the period of the Aydınoğulları (Aydinids) Principality (14th Century), the city’s name began to be known as Güzelhisar (literally “the beautiful castle”). In the 15th Century it came under the rule of the Ottoman Empire. The city was largely destroyed at the nine-magnitude quake which hit the entire Western Anatolian region on 20th September 1899. One of the most striking features of the city is its developed infrastructure including its underground sewage system. When the pipeline built of fired bricks became obstructed by waste, a new pipeline was added on top of it. The rain water was conserved in wells. The people of Tralleis resisted the raids and earthquakes, they rebuilt their city from scratch each time. For the time being only a limited part of their legacy was uncovered, but the excavations in the ancient city reveal something new every day. Very soon, our eyes will see one of the world’s most fascinating ancient cities. Seikilos Yazıtı Melodisi (www.wikipeida.com) The Seikilos Epitaph Melody (www.wikipedia.com) Tralleis is longing for its song to return home Tralleis has also a short song which is the first example of the type of popular music known for nearly two thousand years as “Seikilion”, embodying the expression of a sorrowful inner world. The song’s lyrics in Greek language and its musical notes, written by Seikilos, an artist having lived in Tralleis, were inscribed on the tombstone he had erected for his wife. However, at the end of the 1800’s that tombstone was abducted from the ancient city. Following a long series of adventures it was put on display at the Danish capital Copenhagen. The inhabitants of Aydın launched a signature campaign to bring the marble stone back to Tralleis where it originally belonged to. They had printed and distributed thousands of brochures bearing the lyrics of the song. The lyrics are also quite significant: As long as you live, be light-hearted. Let nothing trouble you. Life is only too short, And time takes its toll. Now you may stop complaining about the ramp to the “İstanbul Archaeological Museums” being to steep for you... Two electrical golf carts provide presently a shuttle service between Gülhane Park Gate-Osman Hamdi Bey Ascent - Archaeological Museums and Topkapı Palace Museum. The service is mobile and technological, as well as free... The “İstanbul Archaeological Museum”, next door neighbour to Gülhane Park and Topkapı Palace, was initially founded by Osman Hamdi Bey during the Ottoman era as Turkey’s very first museum. The current museum complex occupies an outstanding place among Turkey’s cultural assets with its stunning collections as well as its magnificent architecture and its gardens which harbour a rich natural heritage. However, not so many people know about this superb museum. Very few visitors of the adjacent Hagia Sophia Museum for instance are aware of the existence next door of such a splendid treasure. Hence, its enthusiastic supporters graciously refer to it as a “hidden treasure”, an “oasis” or “escape space” or a “discovery”. First time visitors are truly amazed by what they see, the museum collections’ dazzling and priceless artefacts. The museum is reached from the Sultanahmet Gate of the Gülhane Park via the Osman Hamdi Bey Street named after the museum’s founder. If you continue to move forward on this street after passing in front of the entrance to the museum, you arrive at the First Courtyard of the Topkapı Palace. Mobile and technological as well as free of charge Precisely on this itinerary, TÜRSAB logo vested electrically operated golf trolleys displaying visuals of the items from the museums’ collections roam around the museum and provide free transportation to the visitors. On the one hand this service was thought of as a means of reminding the Archaeological Museums to the public, and on the other hand as a way of making things easier for tired travellers desiring to accede to the museum. One of the buggies services the route starting from the Gülhane Park Entrance Gate and proceeding via the Osman Hamdi Bey Slope towards the Archaeological Museums. After downloading passengers at the museums’ entrance as a first stop, it continues all the way to the Topkapı Palace ticket offices. On its return track it drops at the Archaeological Museums the passengers it gathered from Topkapı Palace and completes its roundtrip at the Gülhane Park entrance. The other vehicle picks up tourists near the Hagia Sophia, brings them to the Topkapı Palace Main Gate (Bâb-ı Hümayun) and leads them towards the Archaeological Museums through the Osman Hamdi Bey Street. These two shuttle services which offer great convenience, especially for the elderly and disabled visitors, are actually highly appreciated by all visitors. How was it made possible? This project supported by the İstanbul Development Agency (İSTKA) and developed by TÜRSAB has become an important service particularly benefitting the elderly and disabled, and at the same time, introducing and promoting the Archaeological Museums with the public at large. TÜRSAB is committed since 2009 to the development of the museum according to the agreement it concluded then with the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the Republic of Turkey and still continues to renovate and modernize the Archaeological Museums. The reinforcement against earthquakes and the restoration of the historic buildings, which are as valuable assets as the collections of the museums, are carried out by TÜRSAB. It was important to opt for an environment-friendly solution concerning those vehicles which also help turn museum visits into fun. To this end, electrically operated quiet vehicles were chosen on purpose. In the near future these vehicles will also serve The Imperial Mint (Darphane-i Amire) building being integrated into the Archaeological Museums compound. About İstanbul Archaeological Museums Why is this museums’ complex under the administration of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the Republic of Turkey called “İstanbul Archaeological Museums”? Why “Museums” rather than “Museum”? The complex actually includes three museums; the first being the Archaeological Museum as such; the second being the Museum of the Ancient Orient and the third being the Tiled Pavilion Museum. The building of the İstanbul Archaeological Museum which houses a vast array of artefacts from civilizations having left behind their traces at different periods of history is among world’s ten top museum structures having been originally designed and constructed as museum buildings. It was also awarded the “Council of Europe Museum Prize” in 1993, by being selected “European Museum of the Year”. Sait Faik her köşesiyle, her insanıyla İstanbul’u anlattı. Images of The Sait Faik Museum. Demir The leather workers at Samatya... The waiters of early bird coffee-and-tea houses at the Galata district, with their tired faces... Market gardeners... Porters... Women, children and the unemployed of the streets of Beyoğlu... And in any event, the boatmen and fishermen. Sait Faik narrated the story of every corner of İstanbul with all its humanity. He described the big worlds and dreams of the city’s little people. When he passed away even before reaching the age of 50, he had left behind him fifteen short story books, three novels and his poems. Burgazada is the place where he spent his last years. He wrote many of his stories at his beloved island in the house where he lived together with his mother. That home of his was later converted into a museum bearing his name. And this occurred through a story which is truly worthy of him. Sait Faik and Darüşşafaka A year before his death, Sait Faik participated in a literary matinee which took place at the Darüşşafaka High School located in Fatih in those years. As customary, he chatted with the students following the meeting. But this was not just an ordinary conversation for Sait Faik. The “fatherless children” studying at Darüşşafaka reminded him inevitably of his never forgotten pain, the untimely passing away of his own father! Sait Faik described his gibi kolları vardı. Acıyla mizahı buluşturan, zekayla sanatçı duyarlılığını harman eden Mark Twain Cemiyeti’nde Onursal Üyelik Sait Faik’in ilk yazısı “Uçurtmalar” 9 Aralık 1929’da Milliyet gazetesinde yayımlandı. Honorary Membership of the International Mark Twain Society Sait Faik’s first short story “The Kites” was published on 9 December 1929 in the newspaper Milliyet. He was just 23 years old then. And his life was already shaped at that early age, a life which was going to be devoted to writing. His first story book Tea Urn was published in 1936. It was followed by Cistern in 1939; Battering Ram in 1940; The Superfluous Man in 1948; Neighbourhood Café in1950; Company in 1951; The Poolside and The Last Birds in 1952; Searching for the Missing and Now it’s Time for Loving in 1953; There is a Snake in Alemdağ in 1954. Sait Faik is a novelist whose timeless stories and language never get old. Moreover, he was one of the first authors that the world had discovered from this land. In 1953, a year before he died, he had the chance to acknowledge this distinction. The USA “International Mark Twain Society” of St. Louis, Missouri awarded him the title of “honorary member for his contribution to contemporary literature”. father in one of his stories: “Do you know what my father was for a man? He was a mountain of a man. A handsome guy. Had blue eyes and arms strong like iron. He walked with his head bolt upright.” That handsome man Sait Faik remembered that day. Upon returning home he shared with his mother Makbule Hanım (Lady Makbule) a thought which sounded like a last will. They had no one else than each other on earth, Sait Faik and his mother. What would it be like if they bequeathed all their property and assets to Darüşşafaka and its fatherless children? Not so much later, a year after, this last will and testament of his was executed. Upon his death, Sait Faik’s mother Makbule Hanım 37 bir yazar Sait Faik. Darüşşafaka: 150 years of changing peoples’ lives The literal meaning of the word ‘Darüşşafaka’ is “Nest of Compassion”. It is a charitable institution founded in 1863. Its mission is to provide high-level contemporary educational opportunities to talented children who lost their parents and/or those with scarce resources. Its calling is to offer those children the chance to enter life as enlightened individuals able to think and question, responsible towards their community and their nation. Today, around 1,000 children selected through examination from all over Turkey, study as boarders with full scholarship under the protective wings of the Darüşşafaka Society; receiving a thourough education in English language. 38 Darüşşafaka Cemiyeti Yönetim Kurulu Başkanı M. Talha Çamaş. Chairman of the Board of the Darüşşafaka Society, M. Talha Çamaş. donated their family assets and the copyrights of Sait Faik’s books to the Darüşşafaka Society. Among these assets took place the mansion at Burgazada with the provision that “it should be converted into a museum”. As a matter of fact, a museum bearing the author’s name was created in that mansion. The “Sait Faik Abasıyanık Museum” was opened to the public on 22nd August 1959. And from 1964 onwards, responsibilities regarding the museum house’s maintenance and repair devolved to the Darüşşafaka Society. For new stories... On the other hand, Makbule Abasıyanık stipulated in her will that an annual fiction writing prize should be instituted in the name of his son. In fact, as of 1964, the Darüşşafaka Society established a “Sait Faik Short Story Prize” awarded each year to a selected story writer; hence contributing to Turkish literature by encouraging young authors to deliver fresh literary productions. Therewith, years after his death, Sait Faik posthumously continues to extend his “family” with the addition of new writers each year. That family includes on the other hand, all the orphan children whose education is sponsored by the Darüşşafaka Society. Actually, Sait Faik himself never experienced fatherhood. His uncle not having permitted his marriage to Alexandra, the love of his life, he dropped the idea of getting married altogether and turned his back on love as well. A man alone in his own words. In one article, he expressed his feelings as follows: “I am all alone. Alone among millions. The pain hurts me worse and more “. Sait Faik is a writer combining humour with sorrow and blending intelligence with an artist’s sensitivity. His museum was recently restored and re-opened its doors on May 11, 2013, on the date anniversary of the author’s death. There now, it awaits its guests. In accordance with Sait Faik’s will, entrance to the museum is free of charge. By all means, how could it be otherwise when this is Sait Faik. During his lifetime already, his relationship with money was rather minimal. When he had some, he used to spend it. When not, he was nourishing himself with poetry. Şimdi, Sakıp Sabancı Müzesi yeni sergisiyle Oryantalizm’i mercek altına alıyor. “Oryantalizm’in 1001 Yüzü” adlı sergi 19. yüzyıl Oryantalizmi’ne odaklanırken, “Oryantalizm” teriminin kaynağına inerek bilim dünyasından arkeolojiye, mimariden dünya sergilerine, fotoğraftan modaya uzanan pek çok konudaki etkisine ışık tutuyor. Sergide, 19. yüzyıl başında yapılmış arkeolojik kazılar, dünya sergileri görüntüleri, değerli kitaplar, Avrupa’daki Oryantalist mimarinin Osmanlı İmparatorluğu’ndaki uygulamaları, Oryantalist tarzda iç mekan tasarımları, sahne dekoru ve moda, stüdyo fotoğrafları ve 19. yüzyıl ile başlayan Doğu’ya seyahatin değişik aşamaları, obje ve örneklerle sunuluyor. Exhibition The east seen through the eyes of the west: Magic, mystery and mystique Sakıp Sabancı Museum is hosting the “1001 Faces of Orientalism” Exhibition until August 11. This is a great opportunity to see the unique reflections in art of the way the “East” is viewed through the eyes of the “West”. Although the concept was essentially generated in the 19th Century as the name of a field of research, it acquired a negative connotation following the publication in 1978 of Palestinian-American thinker Edward Said’s book entitled “Orientalism”. Orientalism was no longer accepted as the mere heading of a research area, but became a word characterizing the biased attitude of the West vis-à-vis the East, frilled with a zest of ignorance. In the eyes of the West, the East is as poor as it is mystical, and as much lazy and fatalistic as it is mysterious. For the West, the East is a mere object of knowledge. The active subject, thinking individual role is on the part of the West. Against the background of such an evolution, the manifestations of Orientalism reflected in the area of art paved the way to an all the more abundant production. Artists have always been quite attracted by the theme of Orientalism. Sometimes an artist became an Orientalist unknowingly and was made aware of that fact only when art critics qualified his/her production as such. And on the contrary, some artists who adopted Orientalism as their art direction and nourished themselves from that concept, authored productions which undermined Orientalism altogether. Now, a new exhibition devoted to the theme at the Sakıp Sabancı Museum, places Orientalism once again under the spotlight. While the exhibition entitled “1001 Faces of Orientalism” focuses mainly on 19th Century Orientalism, it sheds light at the same time on the impact of the theme on many areas ranging from science, archaeology, architecture, fashion, photography to World Fairs, by going down to the root source of the term “Orientalism”. The archaeological excavations performed in Near Eastern countries at the beginning of the 19th Century, images from World Fairs, examples of Ottoman buildings erected in the Orientalist style of architecture initially developed in Europe, Orientalist style interior designs, stage designs and fashion, studio photos, and various stages of the “travel to the East” wave beginning with the 19th Century, are presented through various objects, samples and documents. The exhibition was prepared with the support of a scientific advisory committee composed of a group of academics with leading experts in their respective fields. In this sense, the exhibition is equivalent to a scholarly course for students of art history or sociology. The exhibition provides insight on the impact of Orientalism on the world of science, the influence of the Eastern style opulent fabrics on Western fashion design, the Eastern influence in Western architecture as well as the reflections of the concept in the area of archaeology. The exhibition offers archaeological artefacts, stage costumes; books and photographs on the theme of Orientalism. Events such as lecture series examining various aspects of Orientalism, film screenings and workshops for children are also being offered. Do not omit to check out the exhibition programme for precise conference dates. It is important to see that exhibition in order to comprehend in which way the West has been considering the East as an intriguing object of knowledge and art. “Halayık” (Auntie) by Pierre Désiré Guillemet (1827-1878), 1873, oil on canvas, Sakıp Sabancı Museum Collection. “Halayık” of Guillemet is part of the exhibition The painting “Halayık” (Auntie) by one of the most famous Orientalist painters, Pierre Désiré Guillemet can also be viewed at the Sakıp Sabancı Museum within the scope of the thematic exhibition on Orientalism. Guillemet came to İstanbul in 1865 to paint a portrait of Sultan Abdülaziz. Winning the admiration of the Sultan he was appointed as court painter. The “Courtier Woman” canvas of Guillemet is among the leading samples of Orientalist painting. “Halayık” is the picture of a black woman working in the Harem. The canvas painted by the artist in 1873, depicts the golden earrings, the shiny fabric garment and the floral decorations in the hair of the African maid carrying in her hands a tray with two small cups of coffee. The maid looks pensive and sad. All the details of the painting bear the characteristic elements of Orientalist art. 43 Erken Bronz Çağı’ndan Osmanlı’ya... Kırşehir which embraces the rich heritage of the Hittite, Persian, and Roman, Byzantine, Seljuk and Ottoman civilizations with its 5 thousand-year old past proves to be one of the historically significant provinces of Anatolia. With its rock formations and underground cities, it displays the characteristics of the Cappadocia region. This land located on the 13th Century nomadic Turkish- Anatolian tribes’ migration routes, shelters especially important artefacts dating from that period. Kırşehir Museum Kırşehir is home to two important museums with remarkable collections: the Kaman Kalehöyük Archaeological Museum and the Museum of Kırşehir. Located in the city centre, the Kırşehir Museum which houses close to eight thousand artefacts consists of two sections: the archaeological and ethnographic sections. Finds originating from the Early Bronze Age up to the Ottoman era are displayed at the Archaeological Section. These include artefacts made of marble from the Roman period as well as Hittite artefacts and coins and children coffins and tombstones from the Seljuk period. The most noticeable pieces of the ethnographic section include various documents related to Akhism. Kırşehir carpets adorn its walls and showcases; Seljuk and Ottoman era everyday items are also on display in this section. Roma Dönemi’nde Makissos olarak anılan kent, 6. yüzyılda, I. Justinianus zamanında “Justinianapolis” adını alıyor. Roma’nın ardından Bizans tarafından yönetilen bölge, Türk akımlarının etkisi altında büyük bir değişime uğruyor. 13. yüzyılda güçlenen Türk devletleri Kırşehir’i de etkiliyor. 13. yüzyıl ortalarında Moğol hakimiyetine giren Kırşehir, Moğollar’ın ardından çeşitli Türk beylikleri arasında yeniden el değiştiriyor. II. Murat döneminde Osmanlı İmparatorluğu topraklarına katılıyor ve Kurtuluş Savaşı’nın ardından, Türkiye Cumhuriyeti’nin bir ili oluyor. The history of Kırşehir Referred to in ancient times with names such as “Parnassos, Makissos, Ahi Family Country and Cappadocia”, Kırşehir was called Gülşehir (City of the Roses) under the Seljuks. The region whose early historic traces date back to 3000 BC, witnessed a thousand years later the era of the Assyrian Trade Colonies, and subsequently the Hittite Empire and the Phrygian civilization. The area was completely dominated by the Persians in 550 BC, spreading their power all over Anatolia. After Alexander the Great defeated the Persians in 334 BC, began the era of the Cappadocian kingdoms up until 18 AD when the region was made a province of the Roman Empire. As it was the case in the entire Cappadocian region, Christians fleeing Roman persecution built underground cities also within Kırşehir’s territory. The city known as “Makissos” during the Roman period before the 6th Century AD, acquired the name of “Justinianapolis” during the reign of Emperor Justinian. The region was ruled by Byzantium after the end of the Roman Empire. Then, it underwent great changes under the impact of Turkish migration waves. In the 13th Century, the rise of the power of Turkish principalities in Anatolia affected also Kırşehir. However, in the middle of the 13th Century, Kırşehir came under Mongolian sovereignty for a period of time as a result of Mongolian raids in Anatolia. Following that era Kırşehir continued to change hands between various Turkish Anatolian Beyliks (principalities). Thereafter it was eventually included in the territory of the Ottoman Empire during the reign of Sultan Murat II and became finally a province of the Republic of Turkey in the aftermath of the Turkish War of Independence. 48 Etnografya bölümünde sergilenen Kırşehir halıları (üstte), Osmanlı Dönemi günlük yaşamını aktaran sergileme (altta) ve kent içinde yer alan Aşık Paşa Türbesi (solda). Çağdaş Can Öztürk ve Deniz Can Öztürk kardeşlerin titiz çalışmasıyla geçen yıl açılan Otantika Etnografya Müzesi Ege Bölgesi’nin günlük yaşamına ışık tutuyor. To collect “Tatters and Burlaps”... The Otantika (Authentica) Ethnographic Museum, opened last year following a meticulous labour by the two brothers, Çağdaş Can and Deniz Can Öztürk, sheds light on the daily life of the of the Aegean Region. The Öztürk brothers sum up the birth of the museum project as follows: “Our mother and father, who are both architects, preferred collecting paraphernalia in chests instead of money in piggy banks for us two brothers. They collected “tatters and burlaps” as the neighbours put it, rather than saving money on our behalf. When we realized that this pile of “shoddy burlaps” was in fact a very valuable ethnographic collection, we felt the need to share that cultural heritage with the public and created the “Otantika” project with a view to transmitting our culture to future generations.” Traditional attire of local people, home furnishings, fabrics, accessories are part of the collection. Old stoves, coffee tables, 18th Century garments capture your attention. Everything you see in the museum is handmade and original. Otantika which is the product of a meticulous work fulfils an important function in terms of presenting Turkey’s beautiful handicrafts. Another noteworthy feature of the museum is the period furniture on display. You can also view staged scenes of carpet weaving and henna-night ceremonies in the museum. Meatballs and buttermilk of Tire are worth tasting The museum shop offers replicas or look-alikes of the objects seen in the museum. Handcrafted embroideries manufactured by 120 women are sold here. Visitors have the possibility to order custom-made replicas of all the ethnographic artefacts. Pieces similar to those in the museum can be found for you upon request. In addition, various authentic items and products from figs, olive oils, all sorts of herbal soaps to a great variety of organic dry products are sold here. One of the most important features of the museum is the regional cuisine flavours they are offering! You may take your coffee here to recover from your tiring sightseeing tour. Moreover, your coffee or if you prefer your “Mırra”, prepared from freshly roasted coffee beans, is stewed on the hot sand. You can have your coffee served by waiters and waitresses Küçük müzelerin popülaritesi artıyor Çağdaş Can Öztürk ve Deniz Can Öztürk kardeşlerin Aydın’a kazandırdığı Otantika Etnografya Müzesi her zaman aktif bir müze olmak için yola çıkmış. Small museums are growing in popularity Çağdaş Can Öztürk and Deniz Can Öztürk brothers’ Otantika Ethnography Museum in Aydın is set out to be an active museum at all times. In this context, events such as book readings and concerts are organized in the museum. It is advisable to visit the Otantika Museum of Ethnography, to learn more by direct contact about the the history and culture of localities such as Umurlu, Çine, Ödemiş, Tire, Bergama, Afyon and surroundings. While the “small museum” concept quite popular in the world started gaining importance in our country as well, Otantika seems to grow into one of the most beautiful of the smaller museums in Turkey. Meral Akkent, Curator of the Museum. Turkey is actually a paradise of virtual museums. First and foremost, all the major museums in our country can be visited virtually through the www.kultur.gov.tr and www.muze.gov.tr websites of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. The Ministry also established in this framework a “Virtual Music Museum”. On the other hand, the number of our private museums existing in the virtual environment is not negligible. The first of these was Eczacıbaşı Virtual Museum: www.sanalmuze.org founded in 1999. We would like to draw your attention to another “first” in this issue of our Museums Journal: Istanbul Women’s Museum. In order to get first-hand information, we talked to the museum’s curator Meral Akkent... Museums Journal: Why the “Istanbul Museum of Women” and why “virtual”? Meral Akkent: Istanbul Museum of Women, “İKM”(İstanbul Kadın Müzesi) lends visibility to the history of Istanbul’s women. It explores, promotes and keeps alive the memory of all the path-breaking women who contributed to the shaping of the city’s identity. It introduces to Turkey the concept of “Women’s Museum”. It supports the expansion of museums in Turkey by creating yet another private museum and inspires other cities to emulate. On the other hand, it also contributes to the world history of women. İKM was inaugurated on 25th September 2012. We established our museum first in the virtual environment since we thought that it would be the best way to communicate in a comprehensive manner its contents and potential. At the same time, we launched a search for a physical venue. Our project’s contact address for all purposes is: www.istanbulkadinmuzesi.org. 56 Can you please tell us about the world’s first virtual museum of women, and those which followed suit. Women’s museums enriched the contents of traditional museums, challenged traditional conceptions and incited to look at history and art from a different angle. There is indeed a group of mobile and virtual women’s museums operating without a permanent venue. Currently seven such museums exist in the world. The “National Women’s History Museum”, www.nwhm.org is the first of them which was founded in 1996. It chose to operate in the virtual environment pending the acquisition of a physical venue. This museum intended to be established in Washington, D.C., found its building in 2009. The group is now lobbying at the U.S. Senate to get the necessary budget. Canada’s “Online Women’s Museum” opened in 1998 at the internet address: famouscanadianwomen.com. Historian and librarian Dawn Monroe is the author of this project utilizing the virtual media for practical reasons. Monroe, who collaborates with girl scouts working for her on a voluntary basis, established this site in order to inform the group on the history of Canadian women. The Women’s Bureau of the City of Vienna created in 2003, a virtual women’s museum under the name: “muSIEum-displaying: gender” at the internet address: www.musieum.at. The museum’s virtual collection consists of a group of objects, selected from the History, Technical, Jewish and Ethnology museums of Vienna, which were reinterpreted through a new perspective; therewith directing concrete criticism towards the museums’ existing vantage point on women and proposing alternative solutions. The San Francisco-based “International Museum of Women,” launched in 2006 at: www.imow.org is a special project of virtual exhibitions open to the contributions of all those who are interested. The “Girl Museum” established 2009 in the United States, at: www.girlmuseum.org which is particularly focused on the representation of girls in the world’s history of art, offers temporary virtual exhibitions. Two more addresses, having only archive character for the time being, have yet to be added to the list of these museums; namely the “Virtual Muzey” at: www.gender-az.org, created 2003 in Azerbaijan presenting gender-related documents on the history of women, and the “Gender Museum” at: gender.at.ua, founded 2009 in Ukraine offering women and art related articles. “İKM, Türkiye müzeciliğini yeni bir özel müzenin katılımıyla zenginleştiriyor ve dünya kadın tarihine katkıda bulunuyor.” “İKM supports the expansion of museums in Turkey by creating yet another private museum and contributes to the global history of women.” How did you set out and with whom? How do you keep the site alive? İKM began as a dream in January 2011. In June 2011, we founded with a small group of volunteers the “Istanbul Women’s Cultural Foundation”. Founding President Gülümser Yıldırım is a businesswoman who intends to “save women from oblivion and leave good memories to her grandchildren”. I am a sociologist, volunteer curator of this museum. At the same time, I am the founder of the first women’s museum established in 2003 in the State of Bavaria in Germany. Hundreds of volunteers and friends supported our İKM website by providing information, documents and visuals to it and by helping us with the translation of the site into other languages. Even the İKM logo is the contribution of a volunteer. Our Ukrainian graphic designer friend Alex Miskin declared: “Your project is worthy of a logo composed of letters invented by a female graphic artist who dedicated them to a forgotten female typographer”. This meant that, to create our logo, Ms. Miskin used the characters conceived by the female typeface designer Zuzana Licko who named her fonts “Mrs. Eaves”, after Sarah Eaves, the wife and assistant of 18th Century English printer and type designer John Baskerville. Sürekli sergide “ilk” olarak yer alan her biyografi, kadın tarihindeki yeni akademik çalışmaların verileri ışığında, yerini unutulan/unutturulan, fakat yeniden keşfedilen başka bir “ilk”e bırakır... performed the translation of our site into English, Italian and German. Native speakers of these languages carefully supervised and edited the translations. Project partners made their documental and visual archives available to us and showed us guidance. Thus, the İKM website opened for use at this time is the product of an international collective endeavour. The Site’s commercial sponsor is Benetton Turkey; sponsor of the annual expenses of the site is the founder of the “Istanbul Women’s Cultural Foundation”, the Honourable Gülümser Yıldırım. Site management and the “Mini Museum Pedagogy Program” implemented on a daily basis on the social media pages of the museum in Turkish, German, English, Spanish and Catalan languages, are run by volunteers from the Istanbul Museum of Women. Currently, interns and volunteers are loading information on our site’s “Women’s Studies of Turkey Archives” on the one hand; and on the other hand, we are preparing for the “Semiha Es-International Women Photographers Symposium” to take place in November 2013. At the same time, we pursue the search for a physical venue for our museum. Why just a big city like İstanbul? Is this a reflection of the relationship between “Women’s Museum” and “City Museum”? Cities are forged by their history, and urban history is shaping the museums of a city. This relationship led to the concept of İKM. Museums are like family albums answering the question of “Who We Are”, but also producing the concepts of power and identity. The combination of the contents of “Women’s Museum” and “City Museum” is a political issue nourishing the shared memory area. The fact that İKM is a museum focused on İstanbul’s history of women, enables communication between generations, genders, and cultures. This aspect confers İKM the character of a social peace project. Our aim is to constitute a comprehensive women’s history of our country encompassing the female voices of each period and every cultural group, honouring without discrimination every contribution to women’s history, carefully reminding of all female achievements in history and their impact on our present-day lives. The effective materialization of this objective is subject to the establishment of a local women’s museum in every city. In this perspective, the İstanbul Women’s Museum - İKM is a model project which should inspire other cities to follow suit. Currently, there are only two women’s museums in the world focusing on the history of women; those museums were established in 1991 in Bremen and 1994 in Stuttgart by female historians with a view to forging alternative solutions to the existing city museums. They redefined the concept of city museum and what its contents should be like. This is to say that they prefer to carry out their work by using all the public spaces of the city rather than confining themselves to a specific physical venue. And thus the category of “women’s museum without a venue” was created; a museum which possesses neither a collection nor a permanent exhibition. What is the distinction between the permanent and virtual exhibitions in your museum? Our permanent exhibition in itself is focused on the “art and culture” theme corresponding to a specific chapter of the city’s global history of women, otherwise covering a wide range of subjects. Our temporary exhibitions embrace all those other topics of İstanbul’s urban history related to women. The İKM permanent exhibition presents, throughout 2,673 years of İstanbul’s history, the life stories of a distinctive group of women who were passionate, courageous and perseverant individuals having chosen in the area of culture and art a life model diverging from their era’s stereotypes and inclinations. The exhibition offers the chance to establish a virtual dialogue with those women who were born or spent an important part of their lifetime in İstanbul and who enriched the urban memory through their exemplary lives. For İKM, “first” is not a static concept. Each biography included as a “first” in the permanent exhibition may give way to new “firsts” which had been forgotten, but were re-discovered in the light of the new academic studies concerning the history of women. They say that honey is a panacea curing all except death. Indeed, honey which contains many healthful nutritional ingredients such as calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, iron, vitamin C, is a healing, very healthy food. Honey is a miracle. It is a fine jewel produced by the bees concocting the extracts they collect from a thousand flowers; in short, it is nature’s gift to man. Consuming a teaspoon of honey every morning invigorates and protects against diseases. Having praised honey that much, let us now turn to the bees working diligently to fabricate it. They are the ones who actually deserve the main praise... You know, of course, that life cannot continue in an area deserted by bees. A region abandoned by bees is faced with drought and hunger. Life ends there because the bees do not only make honey but provide for the reproduction of plants and the maintenance of nature’s balance. Bees are living beings equipped with highly developed sensory organs. The aim of the museum is to promote apiculture We are in a museum established by people who appreciate the value of honey and bees: the Çine Apiculture Museum! The museum affiliated with the Adnan Menderes University of Aydın is Turkey’s first apiculture museum established with the aim of presenting together the history and culture of beekeeping. The founders define their goal as transmitting to future generations their knowledge and passion for the sector, ensuring accurate and practical know-how transfer, while promoting the use of bee products and contributing to consumer awareness. Of course, also most importantly, to keep moving forward as an always innovative museum. The Çine Apiculture Museum was established in partnership by the Presidency of the Adnan Menderes University on behalf of Çine Vocational School together with the Çine Municipality and the Çine Development Foundation. It was inaugurated on 4 October 2010, as Turkey’s first and world’s 71st beekeeping museum. The Manager of the Project was Instructor Mustafa Kösoğlu and the architectural project was conceived by Architect-Engineer Cengiz Bektaş. We owe them this museum The contributions of Çine Mayor Osman Aydın, Adnan Menderes University President Şükrü Boylu and of Architect-Engineer Cengiz Bektaş were essential in the establishment of the museum. But without a doubt the greatest debt of gratitude in the realization of this project goes to Instructor Mustafa Kösoğlu. He is the one who developed the idea of the museum and spent determined efforts for its continuation. Kösoğlu and all the others who created this museum out of the Yağcılar Elementary School building allocated to the university authored an achievement giving reason for pride to their country. Kösoğlu even organized in 2008 a photo exhibition arousing great interest, entitled “From Nature to the Beehive”, as a fundraising activity to contribute to the financing of the museum project. Yolunuzu Aydın’a düşürün, bu müzeyi görün. Lycian beehives attract great interest While visiting the museum, we learn that apiculture was practiced since the Hittites’ era in Anatolia. History’s oldest beehives, honey pots, blowers, filtration vessels, as well as some of today’s tools and equipment are exhibited in the museum. The 400 years old Lycian beehives and the bags of honey brought from Kenya take the lead among the items attracting greatest interest. Turkey is a developed country in terms of apiculture. There is a rich variety of honeys across the country, with different flavours, colours and aromas. Alone in Aydın the number of people employed in the sector is around 200 thousand. There are nearly 1.5 million hives in the region. It is important for the museum to be Turkey’s first bee culture museum. But even more significant is the apicultural training - supported by TÜBİTAK (The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey) - which is provided under the roof of the museum. It is indispensable for the future of the world that agriculture, animal husbandry and apiculture regain their rightful place in the global economy. In this respect, the Çine Museum of Apiculture is a source of pride for Turkey. We advise you to make a point of going to Aydın to see that museum. Be sure to pick up a jar of Aydın honey while you’re there. www.aricilikmuzesi.net 61 u y n o c n a e l k ü gökyüzünde süz Sokak oyunlarının vazgeçilmezi... Çocukluğumuzun simgesi... There is now such a place for children and those who continue to keep alive the child in them; we are talking about Turkey’s first and only museum of kites... Everyone has a passion. Mehmet Naci AKÖZ has a particular passion for kites... For years he has been striving to keep that wonderful toy alive so that its place in the street culture does not vanish. He devoted his efforts to that tradition since 1981. He started out his journey in the world of kites first by participating in various kite competitions. During the time when he lived abroad he collected a number of different types of kites from the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany. After returning to Turkey he undertook to organize kite competitions. He also established the League of Kite Enthusiasts, the Association of Kite Enthusiasts, and the Club of Kite Volunteers. Since he gathered over time hundreds of kites, he felt the need to share them with the public in a museum. Finally in 2005, he established Turkey’s first and only museum of kites under the name of “Mehmet Naci Aköz Kite Museum”. Initially this private museum was located in a small space. However, thanks to the contribution of the Municipality of Üsküdar, it is now in a new and larger space. With the new space, it also acquired a fresh name: “Üsküdar Municipality Mehmet Naci Aköz Kite Museum”. The museum has now two separate halls, three workshops, a reading room and a film club. The 500 square meters large museum is open to kite lovers of all ages from the age three upwards. It offers to the eyes of the public nearly two thousand pieces from 22 different countries of the world. Uçurtmanın öyküsü History of the kite MÖ 300’lü yıllarda Çin’de doğan uçurtma Uzakdoğu kültüründe önemli bir yere sahip. Originating from China around 300 BC, the kite enjoys an important place in the culture of the Far East. In religious rituals, it was used as appeal to gods, or to ward off evil spirits and, as a means of communication in wars. In addition, it was a traditional element of popular entertainment especially in China, Japan, Taiwan and Indonesia. In 1295, the famous explorer Marco Polo took to the Netherlands the kite he bought from the Malay Islands. Therewith, kite was introduced to European countries. Kites underwent a significant modification in Europe. They were transformed into double roped, four roped show kites drawing shapes in the sky while they were flown through the air. Like in the Far East, kites have been used in Europe and America as well in a variety of activities beyond mere entertainment. For example, in 1572 Benjamin Franklin found the electrical structure of lightning thanks to the kite. In 1884, Guglielmo Marconi used kites as aerial lift to raise skyward the antennas used for the radio broadcasting he realized between the two coasts of the Atlantic Ocean. Again, kites were used in order to photograph the disaster caused by the San Francisco earthquake of 1906. Moreover, a kite was used to carry across from one side to the other the ropes of the first bridge over the famous Niagara Falls. Kites reached our land in the 15th Century. From thereon they occupied a privileged place within Palace festivities as well as in the course of the popular entertainments of the Istanbulite population. And maintained that place tirelessly for centuries up until our present-day! 65 Sanatçının Büyük Hücum adlı eseri. The work of the artist titled “The Great Attack”. It is lunch time in Rome, one of world’s most powerful cities in the First Century A.D. A most common menu on the table: wheat bread, herring, leeks and diluted wine or honey water... Since lunch is not considered the main meal, the number of food varieties on the table is limited and rather confined to light dishes. It is also usual to go bathing after lunch and get even lighter through a massage session. Meanwhile, lively conversations about developments in the city and exchange of ideas will take place. Maybe also, souls will be enchanted by listening to the last poem of a young poet. Afterwards, it will be time for dinner. But before that, one could go to bet at the horse races or watch the last show at the theatre... Up to this point, archaeology, culture and art history describe in the finest detail everyday life in the Roman Empire. The petrified findings of Pompeii carried to the present day in almost “intact” form scenes from the daily life of that era. However, “Theatre in Rome” is left at the “storage room “of history, to the care of specialists and experts; definitely away from popular history. Theatre is one of the world’s oldest art forms, practiced in various forms since times immemorial and in the farthest corners of the world from each other. Nevertheless, talking about theatre in antique age, Greek theatre is what comes to mind first. Roman theatre was influenced by Greek theatre undoubtedly, but diverged from it in many ways. The number of ancient theatres in Anatolia, from Ephesus to Aspendos shows that it was a widespread form of entertainment during the Roman era. The first “reality shows” in history Roman theatre shows significant differences from Greek theatre. People from different social classes were seated at separate sections in Roman theatres. Moreover, Greek tragedy has usually a religious context and is based on dialogues of a higher literary quality. Roman theatre is rather characterized by war and fight. Because Romans like to gush, they like excitement... Moreover, they are aficionados of “blood” as they are accustomed to it from the arenas. The mystery on the shelves of dusty storage rooms is precisely related to that phenomenon. There was a certain Roman theatre that we could roughly compare to today’s “reality shows”; but only to a certain extent, since Roman stage performances surpassed by far any imaginable reality show of our time, because they contained “real” scenes of brutal atrocity! To better grasp what is meant here, let us turn to Hillary J. Deighton who is the author of a striking study on this issue, “A Day in the Life of Ancient Rome”. While defining nudity and torture as the inevitable components of today’s scary horror movies, Deighton emphasizes that the Roman versions of such scenes were performed live without special effects. Yes, there was no need for special effects because these scenes were performed live with real human beings. Hillary J. Deighton, adapting this to the present, suggests that today’s equivalents of those Roman cruelty scenes are not the videos containing staged scenes of pornography or extreme violence, but the illegal films containing “real images of actual violence, rape and death”. Of course, on Roman theatre stages, those subjected to “violence and murder” were not actors but slaves. The audience enjoyed the show by cheering to the screams of death while sipping their drink. Of course, it is not easy to imagine how they reacted to a young female slave’s brutal rape scene. Right after a rape or murder scene, the lead actor concluded the story line in sign language, and the choir was taking over with their song. At the end, the so-called play could turn into a comedy, dragging the audience to burst into laughter while the murdered victim was being taken behind the scenes. Of course, cultural history is not unfamiliar with the bloody fights of gladiators on the arenas or the feeding of animals with human flesh of slaves and/or of the early Christians. However, in the case of theatres, all these atrocities were meant to be displayed on behalf of “art”. Screenplays were written and music was composed just for that purpose; in other words to display atrocity. It is clear that this “form of art” is not easy to comprehend today. This terrible practice which certainly cost the lives of many victims has fortunately fallen into disuse in a relatively short period of time in history. Hence, it was forgotten and abandoned to history’s dark pages. YUNAN’IN TRAGEDYASI ROMA’NIN KOMEDYASI • İlk alkışın, Roma Tiyatrosu’nda yaşanan coşkulu eğlence ile ortaya çıktığı sanılıyor. GREEK TRAGEDY ROMAN COMEDY • It is believed that the tradition of “applause” emerged for the first time in Rome as a manifestation of the cheerful excitement of the enthusiastic Roman theatre audiences. • The main difference between Greek and Roman theatre lies in the fact that Greek theatre meant “tragedy” while “comedy” was the preponderant version of theatre in Rome. • This difference is also testimony to the fact that Greek Theatre was a solemn ritual. Roman Theatre was a tumultuous and vociferous charivari, a farce. According to some records, when a performance was not rated “exciting enough” by the public, the funds allocated to the show were immediately cut (in today’s terms, if the show did not get sufficient “rating”). • In many cultures, masks representing the characters are among the basic elements of theatre. However, Romans liked to see the facial expressions and mimics; to see and share the fear, the excitement, and the laughter on the face of the actor. Hence, masks were not used in Roman theatre. The architecture of Greek theatres is sober. On the contrary, Roman theatres’ architecture is pompous and ornate. So much so that many innovations from fountains spouting fragrant waters to awnings for protecting the audience from the sun were invented at Roman theatres. Sonraki yıllarda grup dışı çalışmalar yapan ve bir ara ABBA’nın etkin müzik yaşamına son veren grup, 1992’den itibaren yeniden başarılı albümler çıkarmaya başlamıştı. www.abbathemuseum.com 70 AN OPENING WHICH LASTED THREE WEEKS! The legendary music group ABBA has now its own museum. The official inauguration of the ABBA Museum in Stockholm devoted to the 1970s’ famous Swedish pop music group ABBA was scheduled to take place on May 7th 2013. However, the Swedes as well as people from all over the world showed so much interest in this event that the period for the sale of opening tickets was extended for three weeks. The tickets in question were sold for 195 Swedish Krona or 23 Euros. Museum’s Managing Director Mattias Hansson said in a statement: “We wanted to be accessible to everyone from the first day on. Since the majority of ABBA fans and music lovers live outside Sweden we decided to give them also a chance to experience a memorable first, by extending the sale period of opening tickets.” ABBA Museum in Stockholm is located on the island of Djurgården where Sweden’s most beautiful museums are. It was established as a part of the “Swedish Music Hall of Fame” permanent exhibition hall. 2.000 m2 out of 5.000 m2 of total exhibition space were reserved to the ABBA Museum. It is open to visitors May through August from 10.00 in the morning until 20.00 hours in the evening; and September through April from noon time until 20.00 hours. An interactive museum ABBA Museum is more than an ordinary museum. Naturally, the costumes, gold records, original objects of the group are showcased in the museum. However, in this museum the visitor plays an essential role. This is how it’s explained by the museum staff: “You are the most important component of our museum. We want everyone who enters this place to feel like the fifth member of the group. You want to see for example how you would look in their legendary costumes. Be it, get dressed, and try them on. Sing their songs in the Polar Studio as they would do; experience the exciting holographic illusions, get on the stage along with the band! Every action you undertake here will be recorded through the personal identification number on your ticket”. Let’s take a brief look at the other sections. The piano at the section called “Benny’s Piano” is coupled with Benny’s genuine piano located at Benny’s own studio on the outside of the museum and whatever he is playing over there on his piano is reproduced here parallel by the piano placed in this section. When you pick up the phone at the “Ring Ring” section you can talk with one of the members of the group. In the “Waterloo” and “Mamma Mia” sections you may embark upon a time travel taking you back to the years when these songs were made. Other sections host ABBA memorabilia, newspaper and magazine clippings, and life stories of the group members. The museum’s “interactive” feature is also reflected on its web site. For instance, the web site offers you the opportunity to learn ABBA songs that you can sing by yourself in a way similar to a digital karaoke system. The ABBA Story ABBA founded by Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson in 1966 reached its ultimate configuration when the ladies Agnetha Fältskog and AnniFrid Lyngstad joined the group in 1969. The name of the group, ABBA was made up as a combination of the initials of the names of the group members. When the group won the Eurovision Song Contest in 1974 with their song “Waterloo”, its fame spread all over the world. In their homeland Sweden, ABBA is being considered “the most successful musical group of all times”. A proof of this is the number of albums they sold worldwide to date: 378 million. After a while, the group members devoted themselves to outside of the group activities and interrupted for a period of time ABBA’s active musical life through a break of a few years. Eventually, from 1992 on they picked up the group’s career from where they left with a new beginning and continued to produce successful albums.
