a major player both as a transit country and as an origin and
destination of freight.
Turkey’s expectations with regard to EU accession and the growing
role of Turkey in trade with Central Asia and the South Caucasus make
the focus on transport even more important.

152nd anniversary of railways in Turkey
1856 : First Railway Construction (IZMIR-AYDIN)
1924 : Railways Nationalized.
Directorate General of Anatolia-Baghdad (4.000km.)
1927 : Ports affiliated to Railways.
Directorate General of Ports and Railways (5.500 km.)
1984 : Transformed into State Economic Organization.

The Ministry

Construct, repair, enhance, renew and operate the infrastructure of
both railways and ports granted to itself by the Government
Carry out all kinds of complementary activities regarding rail transport
maritime and land transport including ferry operations;
Manufacture rolling stocks and similar vehicles
Operate Passenger and Freight Trains on its Infrastructure

RAIL NETWORK
The Ministry
of Transport
TCDD
operates rail services on 10.984 km rail network which is:
predominantly single-track (95 %)
characterised by mountainous terrain, tight curves and steep
gradients.
69 % is with concrete sleepers
21 % is electrified at 25kv, 50Hz.
28 % is signalled.
