About Us
We are a 501c3 Non-Profit All Volunteer team that
provides support to our local community. We
provide K9 Search and Rescue services and
demonstrations to groups in the local area. We are members of the Charles County Sheriff’s
Auxiliary.
Both Jim and Jan are National Association of
Search and Rescue (NASAR) certified SARTECH
II and MLPI (Managing the Lost Person Incident)
certified. Adam is SARTECH III certified. Jan is
certified to Teach the Urban Search course and
the Managing the Lost Person Incident Course.
Bay K9 Search and Recovery provides our services free of
charge. Donations are welcome to cover the expense of the
dogs, training and materials for program presentation.

Community Involvement
We have both been deeply involved in the
community doing various volunteer work for
many years. Jan has been the Head Coach of the
St Mary's Ryken Varsity Ice Hockey team and Vice
Commissioner of the Maryland Scholastic Hockey
League. She is a member of the Waldorf
Volunteer Fire Department, EMS-3 division.
Some of the organizations that we have done programs for include:

Childhood Development Day, Touch-A-Truck, Boy Scout Troop

About the Bloodhound
Where it came from
Bay K9 Search and Recovery is an all
volunteer, non-profit 501 c 3 organization.
Our mission is to provide professional trailing
dog teams and search management support
to the citizens of Charles County and
Southern Maryland. We provide community education programs
such as Lost!...But Found, Safe and Sound
and Hug-A-Tree.
In support of our mission, Bay K9 Search and
Recovery
- Will respond to support local law
enforcement and other requesting agencies
and search teams only
- We do NOT search for lost pets
- We provide demonstrations and educational
programs to area groups
The Bloodhound, also called the St. Hubert
Hound, was found in Belgium in the Middle Ages.
Thanks to the breeding done by monks at St.
Hubert's monastery, the breed grew and
flourished. This dog's exceptional nose made it
one of the most known breeds for scent tracking.
The Nose Knows
The Bloodhound, whose sense of smell is the stuff
of legend, can fairly be described as "a nose with
feet." These dogs have been bred for centuries to
track game and humans. Bloodhounds are so
good at what they do that their evidence is
admissible in court in most jurisdictions. If a
bloodhound tracks an escaped criminal to a
specific spot, it's proof that he was there.
Training a bloodhound is a fascinating
experience. To take a young puppy and introduce
it to the discipline is amazing. You can see them
learn each time they put the pieces together and
solve the problem. As they learn and become
confident and consistent the problems are made
longer, older and more complex. This is when the
handlers learn to read their dog to understand the
information he’s sending.
We train in all kinds of weather and at many
different locations. All training is documented
and assembled into training logs and records.
Many other breeds, especially the Basset and the
Beagle, share this ability to detect minute levels of
scent and follow a trail. All of them also share
certain anatomical characteristics. The
immensely long nose provides for colossal
numbers of olfactory cells to be spread out along
it; the wide nostrils allow air to be taken in and
passed over those areas effectively; and the high,
domed head makes room for the extremely welldeveloped olfactory region of the brain. These
features not only make Bloodhounds efficient,
they make them comical in appearance.
The need to sniff everything is characteristic of
dogs in general—dogs live in a world of scents we
humans can't begin to appreciate, with our puny
and ineffective noses—but the hounds carry it to
extremes. A Bloodhound will cross a room by
snuffling along the floor, detecting the scent trail
only he can detect. His nose tells him the entire
history of the floor; who passed by and when, and
what brands of wax have been used.
