Dear Students;
Çağ University was founded in 1997 by the Baybogan Education Foundation. With 25 years
experience in education ranging from Kindergarten to the University level, the foundation’s aim is to
educate young people for the domestic and international business worlds. The students of Çağ
University hold dear the principles of Atatürk, have global values emphasizing independent thought
and creativity, and can speak English as well as a second foreign language.
Çağ University, with its dynamic structure, modern campus, and international academic staff is
recognized for its high quality education. It is the first foundation university in the Mediterranean area,
which is well known as a center of natural beauty, history and culture.
At Çağ University the ratio of instructors per student is in accordance with international norms. An
education at Çağ provides the student with:

a quality, small group educational environment

a forum where students can share the leaders’ ideas and thoughts of the business world,
politics, and science and technology

a real life educational model made available by coordination with national and international
organizations.
In accordance with the vision of Çağ University and its distinguished teaching staff, Çağ is on course
to be a “world university” coordinating with both American and European universities in terms of
academic, scientific, and technological fields. It also promotes research in social sciences.

TURKISH EDUCATION SYSTEM
The Basic Structure of the Turkish National Education System consists of four main stages as preschool education, primary education, secondary education and higher education.
Pre-school education consists of non-compulsory programmes whereas primary education is a
compulsory 8 year programme for all children beginning from the age of 6. The secondary education
system includes “General High Schools” and “Vocational and Technical High Schools”.
Higher Education is defined as all post-secondary programmes with duration of at least two years. The
system consists of universities (state and non-profit foundation) and other types of higher education
institutions (police and military academies and foundation vocational schools). Each university
consists of faculties and schools offering First Cycle (Bachelor’s level) programmes (240 ECTS), two
year vocational higher schools offering Short Cycle (Associate’s level) programmes (120 ECTS) of a
strictly vocational nature and also graduate schools administering graduate programmes.
The Higher Education Law No. 2547 is the main law, which governs the higher education in Turkey.
All universities (both state and non-profit foundation) are subject to the same law and
regulations/rules. All state and non-profit foundation universities are founded by Law. The Higher
Education System is regulated by the Council of Higher Education (Yüksek Öğretim Kurulu-YÖK)
established in 1981, the Council regulates the activities of higher education institutions with respect to
research, governing, planning and organization.
Admission to higher education is based on a nation-wide Student Selection Examination (ÖSS). The
examination is held once a year and is administered by the Student Selection and Placement Center
(ÖSYM). Candidates gain access to institutions of higher education based on their composite scores
consisting of the scores on the selection examination and their high school grade point averages.
Graduate level of study consists of the Second Cycle (Master’s Degree) and the Third Cycle
(PhD/Doctorate Degree) programmes. There are two types of Master’s programmes: with or without a
thesis. The Master’s programmes with a thesis have 120 ECTS and consist of a minimum of seven
courses, with a minimum of 21 national credits, one seminar course, and a thesis. The seminar course
and thesis are non-credit and graded on a pass/fail basis. The duration of the Master’s programmes
with a thesis is four semesters. Non-thesis Master’s programmes have 90 ECTS and consist of a
minimum of 10 courses with a minimum of 30 national credits and a non-credit semester project. The
semester project is graded on a pass/fail basis. Duration of the non-thesis Master’s programmes is
three semesters. PhD programmes have 240 ECTS and duration of eight semesters which consists of
completion of a minimum of seven courses, with a minimum of 21 national credits, passing a
qualifying examination, preparing and defending a doctoral dissertation. Specialization in Medicine
accepted as equivalent to third cycle programmes are carried out within the faculties of medicine,
university hospitals and the training hospitals owned by the Ministry of Health.
Since 2003, a change in the 1996 Regulations on Graduate Education allows Bachelor’s degree
holders to PhD programmes if their performance at the Bachelor’s degree level is exceptionally high
and their application is approved. For these students, the theoretical part of the PhD programmes
consists of a minimum of 14 courses, with a minimum of 42 national credits.

The national credit system is based on contact hours (i.e. theoretical or practical hours per week). 1.0 credit stands for each
hour of lecture a week and 0.5 credit stands for each hour of laboratory or practical a week.

Çağ University is located between two major cities, Adana and Mersin. There is an international
airport in Adana. The easiest way to come to Çağ University would be by plane. However, there are
buses from other cities of Turkey to both Adana and Mersin. Exchange students should inform the
international office before their arrival. Once the exchange students arrive to Adana or Mersin, our
international office will arrange their arrival to Çağ University.
Accomodation
Our international office help the exchange students to arrange their accommodation. Currently, the
University offers accommodation to its students. There is free transportation from Adana and Mersin
to Çağ university for the students, which is provided by the university. Also Çağ University provides
accomodation and lunch for free for all incoming Erasmus students.

Mersin possesses the fish and other products of the sea that Mediterranean provides. On the other
hand, it has a wide variety of agricultural products grown in different environmental and climatic
conditions offered by the plains, plateaus and mountains. This rich variety of flora and fauna naturally
has led to a remarkable kitchen tradition. In Mersin and surrounding tourism centers the specialties of
the local kitchen can be found. The basis of the local kitchen consists of a great variety of kebabs.
Some of these are even eaten during breakfast or just as snacks between meals. The most widespread
one is the tantuni that could be bought from street vendors. It is made of small pieces of steak.
12
Medical Facilities
There are variety of hospitals and private clinics in both city; Adana/Mersin. To benefit from these
health services, all foreign exchange students and visitors are strongly advised to have a valid
international health insurance before coming to Turkey. They can also obtain health insurance for a
certain period of time from many insurance agencies in Turkey, after entering the country. A
comprehensive insurance costs about 60€ a month.
Insurance
Çag University pays attention to the safety and health of its students and staff alike. The insurance
system related to health issues work in different ways: the students whose parents are protected by any
insurance policy through their occupation are covered by this insurance. Such students can benefit
from any kind of treatment free of charge. They are also protected against any accidents, both studyrelated and not related. The students who do not have any insurance policies inherited from their
parents are covered by the Directorate of Health. The exchange students and other foreign students
studying at Çağ University are requıired to have their own insurance policies.
Library
In order for students to effectively benefit from the research and self-development activities that are a
necessity in modern education, our library has many texts and resource books and provides a
comfortable and modern atmosphere for students and academic staff. As well as domestic and foreign
daily newspapers and magazines, all types of periodicals, bulletins and other publications required by
the academic departments are available. Çağ University Library is working to offer the highest
possible quality service by providing all the resources students need to successfully complete their
studies at the University. Throughout the library, staff works closely with teaching staff to make sure
that the facilities and services are in place to meet the needs of all teaching programs.
13
Recognition of Learning
Outgoing students of Çağ University are required to have their studies pre-approved by their
departmental and faculty study programme authorities after counselling of the member of the
academic staff. After successful completion of the study abroad with presenting his/her transcript, the
earned credits will be fully recognized as agreed between the student and departments authorities prior
to commerce of the exchange programme. The courses passed abroad are shown in their original name
and ECTS credits in the transcripts of exchange students.
With a valid bilateral agreement and learning agreement prepared prior to the mobility between
partner universities and Çağ University, the incoming students upon completion of their studies at Çağ
University automatically get a Transcript of Records. It is the partner institution’s responsibility to
give the students full academic recognition of credits taken at Çağ University.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
The placement into the first cycle degree programmes is made solely based on the scores obtained
from The Student Selection Examination (ÖSS). Students taking the exam make their choices of
degree programmes, and send their list to The Student Selection and Placement Center (ÖSYM),
which is affiliated to The Higher Education Council (YÖK). The ÖSYM receives all the applications,
group the applications with respect to the score type and places the students with sufficient scores to
one of the selections they have made. Students having the right to enrol will do their registrations on
certain dates, usually the first week of September. Students who have started studies and achieved
credits in other universities within or outside of the country may apply for their recognition. The
recognition record is unique for each student and therefore the procedure is carried out accordingly
before the start of each academic year.
 For Foreign Students
The selection of foreign students for any undergraduate (first cycle) programmes into the higher
education institutions in Turkey was also centrally managed via an examination called The
Examination for Foreign Students (YÖS) organized by ÖSYM every year by 2010. However, after
year 2010, the placement is made by each university freely rather than central exam made by OSYM.
On the other hand, students wishing to transfer to one of our undergraduate programmes must apply
directly to our university.
 For Exchange Students
Under an established exchange programme or the one approved by the University (such as the LLP
Erasmus Programme), the exchange students from abroad may be accepted for studies in the relevant
departmant. The International (Erasmus) Office representatives will direct the students from their first
arrival till the last day of their stay. The documents needed for this process include a) application
form, b) the letter of acceptance, c) the learning agreement, and d) an official letter to be received from
the International Office addressed to the registrar. After enrollment is made the students are given a
temporary student ID card to enable them to use the library and other university facilities stratight
away, as well as an official letter to be used for the residence permit. Erasmus Office prepares all
necessary documents with student and obtain residence permit in the first two weeks of student arrival.
 Registration procedures

ABOUT MERSIN AND ADANA CITIES
City of Mersin
The locality of Mersin is one of the most ancient regions of Anatolia, but Mersin is one of the newest
cities of Turkey with a population of 1.500.000. The area where the city is founded was settled in
ancient times. It is still possible to see sites such as Soli-Pompeipolis in the western suburb of Mezitli
and the Yumuktepe tumulus, which is one of the earliest settlements in world history, dating back to
6000 BC. Historical ruins, dating from ancient times, together with those from the more recent past
under Turkish rule, make for a region rich in cultural variety, and provide opportunities to view, and
experience remnants of many different cultures.
Although Mersin's history reaches far into the past, Mersin today is a relatively young city. No larger
than a small town at the end of the 19th century, the city of Mersin became a medium-sized city in the
1960s. Mainly due to internal migration in the 1980s, Mersin has become one of the most rapidly
growing cities in Turkey. A number of factories providing employment opportunities have contributed
to this rapid development.
The Mediterranean climate, coupled with rich agricultural lands and the use of the latest techniques in
greenhouse production, provides for several harvests of farm products each year. Industrial
developments in the formation of fertilizer and food processing plants, as well as an important oil
refinery complex have increased employment opportunities. Mersin is Turkey's third largest sea port
and a free trade zone, and is at the center of a busy transportation network. It is possible to take a ferry
from Mersin to Magusa in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and from Taşucu to Kyrenia. One
can fly to every major city in the country and abroad from Adana Airport, 60 km to the Northeast. The
soon-to-be-finished motorways will also connect Mersin to central Anatolia (Ankara 480km.), and to
southeast Anatolia (Adana and Gaziantep) as well as Syria and Iraq in the east.
One can reach Antalya (460 km) to the west by means of an unusually beautiful road that offers
magnificent scenery. Moreover, it is possible to take a train from Mersin to the whole of Anatolia and
abroad. The Taurus Mountains to the north of the city have provided for the development of additional
tourism mainly in the form of mountain hikes and many summer resorts that have become centers for
relaxation and recreation.
18
In recent years along the western coast, many new tourist complexes and summer villages have
emerged. The coastal area is also very rich in archaeological sites, including Uzuncaburç, Kanlıdivane,
Kızkalesi, Viranşehir (Pompeipolis), Eshab-ı Kehf, Anemorium, Mamure Kalesi and Yumuktepe.
These are major attractions not only for their historical significance but also for their beautiful scenery.

Because the city received many immigrants from nearby regions, the local culture is a medley
of civilizations.

The city hosts the State Opera and Ballet Institution, the fourth after Istanbul, Izmir and
Ankara.

Mersin International Music Festival was established in 2001, and it is one of the major cultural
events of the province. The festival takes place in May every year.

The XVIIth Mediterranean Games, commonly known as the 2013 Mediterranean Games
was the 17th Mediterranean Games. The Games were held in Mersin, Turkey over 10 days
from June 24 to July 3, 2013. http://www.mersin2013.org.tr/en/

You can eat Mersin's delicious sea food, "tantuni" - a kind of hot sandwich, deserts such as
"kerebiç" and "cezerye" and also all kinds of "kebap".
See following link for more information on Mersin: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mersin
19
City of Adana
Adana is now inhabitating about 1.400.000 (including the immediate suburbs receiving
municipal services), whereas the Provincial Population is about 1.950.000. Reputed most with its
extraordinarily fertile lands and certainly broad range of agricultural products, Adana is the center of a
region called “Cukurova”, the agricultural coastal lowlands.
It is said that the history of the city dates back 8000 years, hosting more than 40 civilizations. In fact,
throughout the history, the city itself and its surroundings have been highly attractive places for
several reasons beyond the rich flora, such as, the mild weather, rich underground and running water
resources, its position to take place at the only passway to Mezopotamia on South Anatolia and broad
possibilities of mining including rich silver mines.
Climate
Mediterranean Climate dominates from the sea shore up to 400-600 mt highs. Adana receives
no snow except appearance of some flying flakes for a few minutes throughout the year. The Taurus
Mountains, however, receive plenty of snow, which is regarded to be the main source of the thousands
of springs forming a web of streams and rivers. It is worthy to note that it takes about 40-50 minutes
drive to both of the warm beaches in the south and to the snow-ball play grounds at the Taurus
Mountains, in the north.
See following link for more information on Adana: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adana
