Graduation 2014
THE first graduates of The English School of Kyrenia were celebrated at a
ceremony on May 24th 2014. The graduation ceremony held in ESK’s
Great Hall was attended by school officials and academic staff, students’
families, Kyrenia District Officer Mehmet Envergil, former town mayor
Sümer Aygın and guest speaker Professor Dorothy Griffiths of Imperial
College, University of London.
In her address to the students, ESK’s Chair of the Board, Bilge Nevzat, said
the graduation had taken her back 20 years to her first vision for the
school, and to the day six years ago when ESK first opened its doors. She
said her dream of opening a school to offer education at international
standards in North Cyprus had come true, and now ESK was producing
students of international calibre.
Addressing the new graduates, she said: “Your graduation ceremony is a
special day to celebrate your accomplishments and to search for
inspiration for your lives beyond today. You have worked hard to reach this
day and should be proud of yourselves.”
Quoting Nelson Mandela’s words that “Education is the most powerful
weapon that you can use to change the world,” Mrs Nevzat said education
was not merely about academic prowess, but about getting to understand
oneself and the world. She advised: “No matter what you do and where
you go you will find challenges, some large, some small… meet those
challenges with your head held high and your heart and eyes wide open.
Be positive and aim high! Try to excel in everything you do, and do it with
passion. Strive for excellence in each task, but be happy along the way!”
ESK’s Principal Hector Macdonald told the
students:
“You have gone through difficult times during
your school days. Our duty was to show you
the way. Your reward was to win a place at
the best colleges and universities of the
world.”
Professor Dorothy Griffiths, of Imperial
College, University of London, said the
students were lucky to have such a highstandard education in the TRNC. “This
success is not just the success of ESK but
the success of North Cyprus,” she said.

Principal’s Letter
Hello to all of the students, parents, and staff of
The English School of Kyrenia,
This edition of ESK News coincides with the end of an exhilarating year
for one and all. You will read of the graduation ceremony for our very first
cohort to complete the IBDP, and so much more.
At this time when the school appears to close there are so many things
going on in readiness for the new academic year in September – so
many colleagues are still busy, planning, finishing lists and reflecting on
how to serve each child more fully next academic year.
As you read through the pages of our news you cannot help to notice
that each and every year group is involved in imaginative and original
learning experiences, and this comes from the culture of inquiry that has been established. Our teachers design unique experiences, and go that extra-mile to be imaginative, creative, and expressive,
I.C.E. We are going to use this acronym to help us to spread this style of educational approach to every single subject, rather than isolate the concept to art, drama, and music. Great scientists, business
people, doctors, leaders, all share I.C.E. in order to be successful.
We are most grateful to each and every staff member who made a positive impression on the children
over what has been a highly successful year, and wish all well who are moving on to a new post or retirement. In August more details will be circulated about staff new to the school who combine excellent former training with a shared sense of humanity. It will be exciting for us all as we develop programmes, and stay restless in our drive to become exceptional.
In the new academic year I will need to wear two caps, my original as over-arching Principal, and a
new cap as Head of the Secondary Years. As this occurs I ask you to remember a phrase that I’ve
used successfully throughout a wonderful career to date “remember the good heart”. My thought is
that you are all good hearted, and so am I, so that when we have to deal with difficult things we can
reflect on this to strengthen us all.
Let me wish my hard-working colleagues a lovely period of rest and relaxation, and to you all a super
break, filled with family-time, and the joy of being together.

Okul Müdürü’nden Mektup
The English School of Kyrenia’nın
tüm öğrencilerine, velilerine, ve personeline merhaba,
ESK News dergisinin bu sayısı hepimiz için keyif verici olan bir yılın sonuna rastlamaktadır. İçerisinde Okulumuzun IB Diploma Programı’nı
tamamlayan ilk öğrencilerinin mezuniyet töreni ile ilgili, ve daha pek çok
haber bulacaksınız.
Okulun kapanmasına yakın bu süreçte, Eylül ayında başlayacak yeni
öğrenim yılına yönelik pek çok hazırlık yapılmaktadır – iş arkadaşlarımızdan pek çoğu hala yoğun olarak çalışıyorlar; planlar yapılıyor, listeler
sonuçlanıyor ve gelecek akademik yılda her bir çocuğa daha iyi hizmet
verebilmek adında düşünceler paylaşılıyor.
Derginin sayfalarını karıştırdıkça fark edeceksiniz ki, her yaş grubu yaratıcı ve özgün bir öğrenme deneyiminden geçiyor; bu yerleşmiş olan araştırma kültüründen ileri geliyor. Öğretmenlerimiz eşsiz deneyimler planlıyorlar ve hayal gücünü kuvvetlendirici (imaginative), yaratıcı (creative) ve ifadeyi
güçlendirici (expressive) olmak için daha da öteye gidiyorlar, I.C.E. Bunları sadece resim, drama ve
müzik için ayırmak yerine, bu eğitimsel yaklaşım tarzını yaymakta bize yardımcı olması için bu kısaltmayı (I.C.E.) tüm konular için kullanacağız. Başarılı olabilmek için bütün büyük bilim insanları, iş insanları, doktorlar, liderler, I.C.E fikrini paylaşıyor.
Yüksek derecede başarılı bir yıl çıkaran çocuklar üzerinde pozitif etkisi olan her bir çalışanımıza teker
teker minnettarlık duymaktayız ve yeni bir göreve başlamak üzere ayrılan veya emekli olan herkese en
iyi dileklerimizi sunuyoruz. Ağustos ayında sizlere, okulda yeni görevlerine başlayacak olan, ve bir
önceki seçkin eğitimlerini ortak insan sevgisiyle harmanlamış çalışanlarla ilgili daha ayrıntılı bilgi verilecektir. Programları geliştirmek hepimiz için heyecanlı olacak ve istisnai bir okul olabilme güdüsüyle
yerimizde duramamaya devam edeceğiz.
Yeni akademik yılda, Okul Müdürü olarak asıl kapsayıcı şapkama ek olarak, Ortaokul-Lise Müdürü
olarak yeni bir şapka, yani iki şapka birden takmam gerekecektir. Bu olurken, bugüne kadarki kariyerimde başarıyla kullandığım, “iyi kalbi unutma” tabirini hatırlamanızı isteyeceğim. Düşüncem odur ki,
hepiniz iyi kalplisiniz, ben de öyleyim, o nedenle zor şeylerle uğraştığımızda bunu birbirimize yansıtıp
güçlü olalım.
Çalışkan iş arkadaşlarıma dinlenip rahatlayarak geçirecekleri güzel bir dönem temenni ederken,
hepinize, ailelerinizle birlikte mutluluk içerisinde geçireceğiniz harika bir tatil dilerim.

Well Done Year 6! – June 2014

Huge congratulations to the Year 6
students for their fantastic Cambridge Checkpoint Examination results! In April this year all of the
Year 6 pupils took their Cambridge
examinations in the Great Hall.
They had been working incredibly
hard revising and preparing for the
tests. Every student gave 100% and behaved in an incredibly mature, responsible and focussed manner throughout the week. When the results arrived the teachers were very proud to see how many
great scores there were, with some students achieving the top possible mark in all three papers! We
would like to say a huge well done to Year 6, your hard-work, effort and dedication really shows what a
great year group you are. We wish you all the very best in the future.
Aferin 6. Sınıflar! – Haziran 2014
Yazanlar 6. Sınıf Takımı
Cambridge İlkokulu Bitirme Sınavları’nda aldıkları muhteşem sonuçlar için 6. Sınıf öğrencilerimizi yürekten tebrik etmek istiyoruz! Geçtiğimiz Nisan ayı içerisinde tüm 6. Sınıf öğrencilerimiz Büyük Salon’da gerçekleşen Cambridge sınavlarına girdiler. Bu sınavlara hazırlanmak için hepsi de çok yoğun
bir çalışma ve tekrar süreci geçirdiler. Sınav haftası boyunca her bir öğrenci %100 bir gayret
göstererek, müthiş bir olgunluk, sorumluluk ve konsantrasyon sergilediler. Sınav sonuçlarını alınca
öğretmenleriniz olarak çok gururlandık;
her üç sınavda da mümkün olan en
yüksek puanı alan öğrencilerimiz oldu!
6. Sınıf öğrencilerimizin tümüne de
kocaman bir aferin derken, ortaya koymuş olduğunuz yoğun çalışma, efor ve
kararlılık, gerçekten ne kadar harika bir
grup olduğunuzun kanıtı. Hepinize

Year 3B Oscars – 26 June 2014

3B decided to finish the year in style with a “Class Oscars” ceremony. All the children dressed in their
finest clothes for the event on the final Thursday. Awards ranged from the silly (“Bull in a China Shop
Award”) to fun (“Joker of the Pack Award”) to meaningful (“Star Citizen Award”). Everyone in the class
received an award for something, and great fun was had by all. After the ceremony, the children
changed into something a little more comfortable for an “After Party” in the classroom. It was a
memorable occasion!
3B Sınıfı Oskarları – 26 Haziran 2014
yazan Mike Bunting, 3. Sınıf Öğretmeni ve İlkokul Matematik Koordinatörü
3B Sınıfı olarak “Sınıf Oskarları” töreni düzenleyerek yıla şık bir son vermek istedik. Çocukların tümü
yılın son Perşembesi gerçekleşen etkinlik için en şık kıyafetlerini giydiler. Ödüller, komikten (“Bull in a
China Shop” Ödülü – en sakar), eğlenceliye (“Joker of the Pack” Ödülü – en komik), eğlenceliden anlamlıya (“Star Citizen” Ödülü – en yurttaş) çeşitlilik gösterdi. Sınıftaki herkes bir şey için ödül kazanmış
oldu, ve hepimiz çok eğlendik. Tören sonrasında çocuklar “Tören Sonrası Parti” için daha rahat hareket edecekleri parti kıyafetlerini giydiler. Bu hepimizin hatırlayacağı güzel bir etkinlik oldu!

“International Day” at ESK – 30 Nisan 2014

The recent International Day held at ESK was a huge success.
Parents and families joined their children to experience the
carnival atmosphere. The students in the Secondary school took
on the international theme by setting up stands representing
countries from around the world while others put what they
have been learning in their business studies lessons to the test
by setting up a small retail business for the day … hopefully
profit making!
The Primary children entertained the crowds by performing
again, the highlights from their Children’s Day performances
while Year 2 sang a medley of songs that they have been
learning throughout the year. Secondary musicians showed
their musical skills performing a wide range of pieces ranging
from Rock to traditional songs. Alongside the children, outside
providers added to the atmosphere by coming and selling
traditional Cypriot food and products such as handmade olive
bread, basket weaving and chair making another amazing
cultural event at ESK!

ESK’da “International Day” – 30 Nisan 2014
Yazan Güler Şahin, İlkokul Türkçe Bölüm Koordinatörü
30 Nisan 2014, Çarşamba günü ESK’da düzenlenen
“International Day” öğrenci, öğretmen ve velilerin katılımıyla bir
şenlik havasında yaşandı.
Ortaokul-Lise öğrencileri, farklı kültürlere ait hazırladıkları
panolar ve bu kültürlerin giyim-kuşam, obje ve yiyecekleriyle
tamamlanması gezenlerin görerek ve yaşayarak bu
kültürleri tanımalarına olanak sağladı.
ESK öğrencilerinin satışa sundukları ürünlerden elde edilen gelir, etkinlik sonunda öğrenciler tarafından SOS yetkililerine
teslim edilmiştir. Öğrencilerin bu sosyal sorumluluk duygusu ile
hareket etmeleri, büyük küçük herkese örnek olabilecek bir
davranış olarak takdire değer bulundu.
Bu etkinlik içerisinde; ESK müzik grubu dinletisi ve ilkokul
öğrencilerinin dans gösterileri izleyenlerin de coşkulu katılımıyla
olağanüstü bir atmosfer yaratmıştır.

Reception Egyptian Party-16 May 2014

Our topic this term is Egypt patterns and expeditions. Children enjoyed
making shape patterns onto shirts and hats. We made name cartouches
from Egyptian letters to create our costumes for the party. We learnt an
Egyptian dance and how Egyptians used to dress. For our big write the
Reception children wrote an invitation inviting Year 4 to our Egyptian
Party. We had lots of fun at the party. Year 4 children kindly performed a
few Egyptian dances and sang their songs; they then supported the
reception children to do the same. It was great fun and we all danced
together!

kapsamında Reception çocukları 4. Sınıf öğrencilerini Mısırlılar Partisi’ne davet etmek için bir davetiye
hazırladılar. Partide hepimiz çok eğlendik. 4. Sınıf öğrencileri partimize gelerek için birkaç Mısırlı dansı
yapıp, şarkılar söylediler; Reception sınıfı çocuklarına danslarını paylaşmaları için destek oldular. Bu,
hep birlikte dans ederek çok eğlendiğimiz harika bir parti oldu!

‘Canını En Çok Ne Yakar’ oyunu ESK’daydı – 2 Mayıs 2014

LSS’nin ‘Bir Dünya Daha var’ projesi kapsamında çocuk tiyatrosu etkinlikleri devam ediyor.
Limasol Türk Kooperatif Bankası’nın yan kuruluşu olan Limasol Sosyal Sorumluluk Kurumu kapsamında
geçtiğimiz yıl Lefkoşa Belediye Tiyatrosu ile girilen işbirliğinde 9 bin çocuk, çocuk tiyatrosu ile tanışmıştı.
Bu yıl çocuklar için “Canını en çok ne yakar” adlı oyunu destekleyen LSS, Nisan ayında 23 Nisan ve Atatürk
İlkokullarından sonra ESK’daydı.
ESK Öğrencileri Tiyatroya Büyük İlgi Gösterdi.
ESK Türkçe Bölümü öğretmenlerinin davetiyle okula gelen LSS, ESK’da 1., 2. ve 3. Sınıf öğrencilerinin oyunu
izlemesini sağladı. Oyun büyük bir beğeni topladı. Bu etkinliğin kendileri için önemli olduğuna ve öğrencilere
büyük fayda sağladığına dikkat çeken okulun İlkokul Türkçe Bölüm Koordinatörü Güler Şahin LSS ile
gerçekleştirdikleri bu ikinci etkinliği hep devam ettirmek istediklerini belirttiler.
Oyunun sonunda Güler hanım LSS danışmanı ve DAÜ, İletişim Fakültesi öğretim üyesi İpek Halim ve Limasol
Türk Kooperatif Bankası Halkla İlişkiler ve Reklam Müdürü ve LSS yönetim kurulu üyesi Özlem Kavaz’a
teşekkür edip günün anısına bir Teşekkür belgesi taktim etti.
“Canını en çok ne yakar?”
Limasol Sosyal Sorumluluk Kurumu’nun destekleri ile hazırlanan “Canını en çok ne yakar” adlı oyunda Aytunç
Şabanlı, Zeliş Şenol, Asu Demircioğlu, Erdoğan Kavas, Melek Erdil, Cem Aykut, Melihat Melis Beşe ve Osman
Ateş sahne alırken, yönetmenliğini de Hatice Tezcan üstleniyor. Oyunda Afrika’da bir grup çocuğun anlattığı
öykü aynı zamanda sahnede canlandırılıyor. Bir yandan çocuklara Afrika’yı tanıtmayı hedefleyen oyun bir
yandan da canını en çok diş ağrısı mı? Bir arının sokması mı? Yoksa yalan mı yakar sorusunu sorguluyor. Yalan
ve iftiranın nasıl can yakabileceğine vurgu yapıyor. Oyun çocukları eğlendirirken eğitmeyi hedefleyen yapısıyla
bol dans ve müzik de içeriyor.
Kemaler: “Çocukları tiyatro ile tanıştırmak ve tiyatroyu sevdirmek önemli...”
Limasol Türk Kooperatif Bankası Yönetim Kurulu Başkanı Hüseyin Kemaler, 75. Yaşını kutlayan Limasol Türk
Kooperatif Bankası’nın yan kuruluşu olan LSS’nin çalışmalarının sosyal sorumluluk kapsamında çalışmalarını
sürdürdüğünü belirterek, çocukların tiyatro ile tanışmasının önemini vurguladı. Kemaler, çocukları tiyatro ile
tanıştırmak ve tiyatroyu çocuklara sevdirmek için yola çıkılan bu projenin süreceğini de belirtti.

‘What hurts you the most?’ was at ESK – 2 May 2014

continues. Limassol Turkish Cooperative
Bank in association with Limassol Social
Responsibility Agency (LSS) in the last year
has introduced children’s theatre to 9
thousand children. In April this year with the
support of LSS the play ‘What hurts you the
most’ was first performed at 23 Nisan and
Atatürk Primary Schools, then at ESK.
ESK Students showed great appreciation of the play
ESK’s Turkish department teachers invited LSS to ESK to perform for years 1, 2 and 3. The play was enjoyed
and liked by all. The Head of the Turkish Department, Güler Şahin, stated that this is the 2nd of this type of
activity with LSS and would most definitely like it to continue because she believes it has great benefits for the
children. At the end of the play Mrs Şahin thanked and presented both LSS Consultant and member of the EMU
Communication Faculty, İpek Halim, and Limassol Cooperative Bank Head of Public Relations and Advertising
and member of LSS management Board, Özlem Kavaz, with a ‘Thank you’ certificate.
“What Hurts You The Most?”
With the support of The Limassol Social Responsibility Agency the play ‘What hurts you the most?’ was brought
to life on stage under the direction of Hatice Tezcan, by actors Aytunç Şabanlı, Zeliş Şenol, Asu Demircioğlu,
Erdoğan Kavas, Melek Erdil, Cem Aykut, Melihat Melis Beşe and Osman Ateş.
As a group of African children tell the story, the actors bring it to life. On one hand the play introduces Africa to
children and on the other the question of what hurts you the most is asked. Is it toothache? Is it a bee sting? Or
is it a lie that hurts the most? The play makes the point that lies and accusations hurt the most. The lesson and
moral of the play is taught through wonderful music and dance.
Kemaler: The importance of introducing children to theatre and helping them fall in love with it.
Head of the Board of Management of Limassol Turkish Cooperative Bank, which has recently celebrated 75
years, Hüseyin Kemaler stated that its subsidiary LSS will continue its social responsibility work,
because introducing children to theatre and helping them fall in love with the magic of theatre is an
important cultural obligation.

Y2 Pirate Attack – 15 May 2014

Miss Simmons Read write Inc. group, surprised the teachers in the staff room when they dressed up
as Pirates as part of their English Book ‘The Dressing-up Box!’ They talked about what their favourite
dressing-up clothes were and imagined that they had some wild and wonderful costumes which they
would wear every day.
2. Sınıf Korsan Saldırısı – 15 Mayıs 2014
yazan Miss Rebecca Simmons, 2. Sınıf Öğretmeni ve Aşağı İlkokul Koordinatörü
Miss Simmons’ın Read write Inc. grubu, ‘The Dressing-up Box’ adlı İngilizce kitaplarının bir parçası
olarak korsanlar gibi giyindiklerinde, öğretmen odasında bulunan öğretmenleri çok şaşırttılar.
En sevdikleri kostümler üzerine konuşma olanağı yakalayan öğrenciler, her gün giyebilecekleri bazı
harika ve vahşi kostümleri hayal ettiler.

Y6 Talk On Africa – 6 May 2014

Year 6 were very lucky to have Charles Obi come in and talk to them about his homeland in Africa. He
shared his childhood experiences with them, showing them pictures and talking about his favourite
foods, the traditional clothes people wear, the dances children learn and the varied animals that are
found across the grasslands. It really inspired them to want to find out more about a very diverse
continent.
6. Sınıflar Afrika’yı konuştular – 6 Mayıs 2014

6. Sınıf öğrencileri, onlara anavatanı Afrika’yı anlatmak için okula gelen Charles Obi ile tanıştıkları için
çok şanslıydılar. Öğrencilere çocukluk anılarından bahseden Charles, onlarla fotoğraflar paylaşıp, en
sevdiği yemekler, geleneksel kıyafetler, çocukken öğrenilen danslar ve otlaklarda bulunan çeşitli
hayvanlar üzerine konuştular. Bu, çocuklara bu çok çeşitli kıta ile ilgili daha fazla şey öğrenmek için
gerçek bir esin oldu.

HASDER Masal Anlatma Yarışması – 4 Mayıs 2014

Halk Sanatları Vakfı (HASDER) Çocuk Kulübü, 1977 yılında Kıbrıs
kültürünü tanıtmak ve yaşatmak amacıyla kurulmuştur. Kuruluşunun 10. yılında ilkokul öğrencileri arasında masal anlatma
yarışması düzenlemeye başlayan bu kulüp, bu yıl da ‘’Hayallerimin
masalını geleceğe yazdım’’ sloganı ile 22. yarışmasını düzenlemiştir.
Okulumuzun 3. Sınıf öğrencilerinden olan Ödül Soytürk ise ada
genelinde yapılan bu yarışmada ikinci gelerek okulumuzu gururlandırmıştır.
HASDER Storytelling Competition – 4 May 2014

In 1977 The Foundation of Folk Arts (HASDER) Children’s Club was established with the purpose of
introducing and bringing to life the culture of Cyprus. In their 10th year the club began the storytelling
competition amongst primary school students. This year, under the theme of ‘I’ve written the story of
my dreams for the future’, they organised the 22nd national competition.
ESK Year 3 student Ödül Soytürk made our school proud when she achieved second place.

We had our Animal Welfare Charity Day on
10th June Tuesday and it went really well.
We would like to let you know that we have
raised 250 TL for the Kyrenia Animal
Rescue Center by selling the bits and pieces
that the club children have made. We would
like to thank everyone who has contributed.

team attended our event on the day with
the 3 legged dog little Annie and the
children were very happy to be with her. The
children were ecstatic to hand in the money
they raised to the KAR members which will be used for animals in need.

10 Haziran, Salı günü, çok güzel geçen Hayvan Refahı Hayırseverlik Günü’müzü gerçekleştirmiş
bulunmaktayız. Günde, kulüp çocuklarının yapmış oldukları elişlerini satışa sunarak, Girne Hayvanları
Kurtarma Merkezi (KAR) yararına 250TL bağış topladığımızı sizlere bildirmekten mutluyuz. Katkı koyan
herkese teşekkür ederiz. KAR eğitim ekibinden etkinliğimize katılan iki bayanın, yanlarında 3 bacaklı
kopek küçük Annie’yi de getirdiklerini görünce çocuklarımız çok sevindiler. Çocuklar, topladıkları ve
ihtiyaç duyan hayvanlar yararına kullanılacak olan bağışları KAR üyelerine teslim etmekten büyük
mutluluk duydular.

A Musical Moment – 3 June 2014

The entrance to the school was filled with family and friends as they waited patiently to enter the
Great Hall for the first ever Primary Music Concert, entitled ‘A Musical Moment’. With the stage,
lighting and sound system set, the audience were in for a real treat.
The evening showcased the many talented musicians from Years 2 to 6. The variety of performances
included pianists, violinists, drummers, guitarists and vocalists, including the Primary School Choir. It
was the first time that many of the children had ever performed in front of an audience but needless
to say they did us all proud!

Müzikal bir An – 3 Haziran 2014

Okulun girişi, ‘Müzikal bir An’ adını verdiğimiz ilk İlkokul Müzik Konserini izlemek üzere Büyük Salon’a
girmek için sabırla bekleyen aile üyeleri ve arkadaşlarla dolup taştı. Sahne dekoru, ışıklandırma ve
ses düzeni ile birleşince, seyirciyi gerçek bir görsel ve
işitsel ziyafet bekliyordu.
Akşamda 2.Sınıflardan 6. Sınıflara kadar pek çok
yetenekli müzisyen görev aldı. Performanslar
kapsamında, İlkokul Korosu dahil, piyanistler, kemanistler, bateristler, gitaristler ve vokalistler bulunmaktaydı.
Bu pek çok çocuğun seyirci önündeki ilk performansı olmakla birlikte, tüm öğrencilerimizle gurur duyduğumuzu söylemek isteriz!

Storytelling Event – 26 May 2014

Alec Williams, what an entertaining and enchanting story teller! From start to finish the children were
watching and listening intently. Mr Williams shared his story telling skills with the children and asked
them to join in with many of the actions that helped bring the stories to life! His facial expressions,
hand gestures and body language added another dimension to storytelling that many of the children
were enthralled to see. He also teased the audience with some riddles, which really got them thinking
and that included the teachers too!
I am sure all that attended will now be sharing stories with even greater enthusiasm and expression.
Masal Anlatma Etkinliği – 26 Mayıs 2014

Alec Williams, eğlenceli ve büyüleyici bir masal anlatıcısı! Çocuklar anlattığı masalları başından sonuna kadar dikkatle izlediler ve dinlediler. Mr Williams, çocuklarla iyi bir masal anlatıcısı olmanın sırlarını
paylaşırken, anlattığı masallara hayat vermek için pek çok yerde çocuklardan hareketlerle eşlik etmelerini istedi. Yüz ifadelerinin, el hareketlerinin ve beden dilinin masal anlatımına bambaşka bir boyut
kattığını çocuklar hayranlıkla izlediler. Mr Williams sorduğu bilmecelerle öğretmenler dahil, herkesi
derin düşünceye iterek, izleyicilerine takıldı!
Etkinliğe katılan herkesin bundan sonra masallarını daha büyük bir coşku ve ifadeyle paylaşacaklarına
eminim.

We read the famous Elmer story which reminded us that we are all different and this is what makes us
special. Elmer is colourful and so to celebrate Elmer day we dressed up in colourful clothes and then
we had a picnic. Children also coloured in pictures of Elmer. They enjoyed the day! We are all special
and we celebrated our differences. Reception had a lovely day!

Elmer gününü kutlamak için renkli kıyafetlerimizi giyip piknik yaptık. Çocuklar ayrıca Elmer’in resimlerinden boyamalar yaptılar. Tüm çocuklarımız çok eğlendiler! Her birimiz özeliz ve bu etkinlikle
farklılıklarımızı kutlamış olduk. Hazırlık sınıfları olarak harika bir gün geçirdik!

ESK student selected for the 2014 Benjamin Franklin Transatlantic Fellows
Summer Institute – 14 May 2014
The English School of Kyrenia has received excellent news about Year 11 student Sine Özkaraşahin.
This year the U.S. Embassy interviewed over 130 applicants both north and south of the Island for the
2014 Benjamin Franklin Transatlantic Fellows Summer Institute. They note that there were so many
talented students that their choice for a chosen fellow was a difficult task. Sine has been selected as
one of the few chosen students to participate in the ten-day summer institute in Washington, D.C. This
program is designed specifically for Cypriot students and will cover global issues, leadership and
media training, collaborative project development, and is scheduled for July 20-29, 2014. All travel
and institute participation costs will be covered by the U.S. Embassy and Fulbright Commission in
Cyprus. ESK Principal Hector MacDonald commented: ‘As a school community, we all share a sense of
pride that Sine has been granted this honour’

Enstitüsü’ne seçildi – 14 Mayıs 2014
The English School of Kyrenia 11. Sınıf öğrencilerimizden Sine Özkaraşahin ile ilgili harika bir haber
aldık. Amerikan Elçiliği bu yıl, 2014 Benjamin Franklin Transatlantik Dostları Yaz Enstitüsü’ne katılmak
üzere seçilecek adanın hem kuzey hem de güneyinden başvuru yapan 130 üzerindeki aday ile
mülakatlar gerçekleştirdi. Bu kadar çok yetenekli öğrenci arasından seçim yapmanın çok zorlu bir
görev olduğunu belirtmişlerdir. Sine, Washington D.C.’de gerçekleşecek on günlük yaz enstitüsü’ne
katılmak üzere seçilen az sayıdaki öğrencilerden birisi olmuştur. 20-29 Temmuz 2014 tarihleri
arasında gerçekleşmesi planlanan bu program özellikle Kıbrıslı öğrenciler için tasarlanmış olup,
küresel meseleleri kapsayacak, liderlik ve medya eğitimi, işbirlikçi proje gelişimi gibi konulardan
oluşacaktır. Tüm ulaşım ve enstitüye katılım masrafları, Amerikan Elçiliği ve Kıbrıs’taki Fulbright
Komisyonu tarafından karşılanacaktır. ESK Okul Müdürü Hector MacDonald’un da belirttiği gibi: ‘Okul
olarak, bu onura layık görülmüş olan Sine’nin gururunu paylaşıyoruz.’

Y10 Biology Investigation– 29 May 2014

Year 10 Biology students investigate the anatomy of
mammalian kidneys. This serves as an introduction to an
‘Excretion and Thermoregulation’ unit. During the
dissection, students draw diagrams of external and internal
structures of the organ and try to make an educated guess
about the functions of the parts they see. The introductory
dissection lesson is then followed by a series of sessions
where they learn the structure and functions in greater
detail.
10. Sınıf Fen Araştırması – 29 Mayıs 2014
yazan Dorota Zukowska, Ortaokul-Lise Biyoloji Öğretmeni
10. Sınıf Biyoloji öğrencileri memelilere ait böbreklerin anatomisini
araştırdılar. Bu, ‘Boşaltım ve Termoregulasyon’ ünitesine bir giriş
olarak hizmet etmiştir. Diseksiyonu sırasında, öğrenciler bu organın
dış ve iç yapılarının eskiz çizimlerini yapıp gördükleri parçaların
fonksiyonları hakkında tahminler yürütmeye çalıştılar. Bu diseksiyona
giriş dersini takiben, yapı ve fonksiyonlarla ilgili daha detaylı bilgi
edinmek için bir dizi çalışmalar yapacaklardır.

birincilik ESK öğrencisinin – 23 Mayıs 2014
Telsim ve Kıbrıs Türk Fotoğraf Derneği (FODER) işbirliğinde düzenlenen “Çocuk Gözüyle
Benim Kıbrısım” fotoğraf yarışması sonuçlandı.
Yaşa göre 2 kategoride düzenlenen yarışmada, 6-10 yaş kategorisinde ESK 2. Sınıf
öğrencisi Erem Cem, birinciliğe layık görüldü.
Yarışmaya katılanların tümünün en az bir fotoğrafının sergileneceği sergi 4 Haziran saat
18.00’de Lefkoşa’da İsmet Vehit Sergi Salonunda açılacak. Sergide 50 TL’den satılacak
fotoğraflardan elde edilecek gelir, Kızılay aracılığıyla Soma’daki çocuklara gönderilecek.
Yarışma sonuçları bugün FODER’de düzenlenen basın toplantısıyla açıklandı. Telsim
Genel Müdür Yardımcısı Fevzi Tanpınar’ın açıkladığı sonuçlara göre, dereceye girenler
şöyle:

ESK Student wins 1st Place in the Telsim/Foder “My Cyprus Through The
Eyes Of A Child” Photography Competition – 23rd May 2014
“My Cyprus Through The Eyes Of A Child” Photography Competition organised by Telsim
together with the Cyprus Turkish Photography Association has concluded.
In the 6-10 year group category ESK Year 2 student Erem Cem took first place.
One photograph from each child will be displayed on 4th June at 6pm at an exhibition
that will be taking place at the Ismet Vehit Exhibition Hall in Lefkosa. The photographs
will be sold from 50tl and the proceeds will go towards helping the children in Soma
through the Red Cross. The results of the competition were announced at a press
conference organised by FODER. Assistant Director of Telsim Fevzi Tanpinar gave the
results as follows:
6-10 age group category: 1. Erem Cem, 2. Adasu Oğural, 3. Eda Önöral. Telsim Special
Award: Yasemin Baybora.

for takıng part in the 5 hour national litter cleaning campaign: “We spent morning till noon picking
litter off of the main road of Bellapais down towards the Doğanköy traffic lights. As CAS students of
ESK, we will continue to support this event and hope that it raises awareness to part of our community
who still think that it is ok to throw bottles and cans out of their cars.”

aferin demek istiyorum: “Sabah saatlerinden akşama saatlerine kadar, Bellapais anayolundan
aşağıya Doğanköy trafik ışıklarını kapsayan bölgede çöp toplayarak geçirdik. ESK CAS öğrencileri
olarak bu etkinliği desteklemeye devam edeceğimizi belirtirken, böylesi etkinliklerin, arabadan şişe ya
da teneke atmanın toplumumuz içerisinde kabul edilebilir birşey olduğunu düşünenlerde de bir
farkındalık yaratacağını umuyoruz.”

Year 6 Tie Dyeing Event – 12 June 2014

Year 6 had a wonderful morning on Thursday 12th June outside tie dyeing a white t-shirt. They used
elastic bands to create their pattern and then chose a colour to dye with. The results were both unique
and amazing. A great time was had by all.

6. Sınıf öğrencileri, 12 Haziran, Perşembe gününü beyaz tişörtlerini batik yaparak harika bir sabah
geçirdiler. İstedikleri desenleri yaratmak için lastik bantlar kullanan öğrenciler daha sonra batik
yapacakları renkleri seçtiler. Ortaya çıkan tişörtler hem original hem de muhteşemdi. Herkes çok iyi
vakit geçirdi.

Y5 Chinese Day – 9 & 10 June 2014
As Part of the Year 5 Topic, ‘The Great Kingdom of China,’ the children were given a first-hand
experience. No, they did not take a quick flight over to the Far East but travelled just outside Girne to
‘The Chinese House Restaurant’. In preparation for this day the children were dressed in Chinese
attire and colours, red being the most popular.
On arrival they were greeted by the beautiful gardens, décor and staff of the restaurant. The children
instantly began to absorb the very peaceful and intricate details and traditions that surrounded them.
The pupils were treated to a three course lunch which included: prawn crackers, spring rolls, chicken
satay and then a main of noodles, egg fried rice and chicken with Chinese vegetables. The special
surprise welcomed by all the children was a dessert of banana fritter. For many of the children (and
staff) a quick lesson of how to use chop sticks was viewed and well many were most successful in
using these.
The Chinese cooks allowed the children into the kitchen to view the cooking of their food, taught them
some Mandarin and then shared their singing skills with them. Their talents were endless and enjoyed
by all the children. A great educational day was had by all.

5. Sınıfların Çinliler Günü – 9 ve 10 Haziran 2014
5. Sınıfların Tema dersi konusu ‘Büyük Çin Hükümdarlığı’nın bir bölümü olarak çocuklara ilk-elden bir
deneyim kazandırmak istedik. Hayır, hep birlikte Uzak Doğu’ya uçamadık ancak, Girne’nin biraz dışında bulunan ‘The Chinese House’ adlı restorana gidebildik. Güne hazırlık olarak çocuklar geleneksel
Çin kıyafetleri ve renklerini giydiler; kırmızı en popüler renk oldu.
Varışımız üzerine restorana ait muhteşem bahçeler, dekor ve güleryüzlü personel tarafından
karşılandık. Çocuklar hemen etraflarını saran gözalıcı detaylar ve geleneklerin huzurunu hissetmeye
başladılar. Çocuklara üç bölümden oluşan bir öğle yemeği: karides krakerler, çin börekleri, satay soslu
tavuk, ardından ana menü olarak erişte, yumurta kızartmalı pilav ve Çin sebzeli tavuk ikram edildi.
Tüm çocuklar onlar için özel olarak hazırlanmış ve kızarmış muz tatlısından oluşan sürprizi sevinçle
karşıladılar. Pek çok öğrenci (ve personel) için yemek çubuklarının nasıl kullanılacağına yönelik hızlıca
bir ders verildi ve pek çoğu, sonrasında yemek yerken bunları kullanmakta başarılı oldu.
Çinli ahçılar, yemeklerinin yapımını izlemeleri için çocukların mutfağa girmelerine izin verdiler; ayrıca
onlara biraz Mandarin (Kuzey Çin lehçesi) öğrettikten sonra birlikte şarkı söylediler. Yetenekleri sınırsız
olup, tüm çocuklar tarafından beğenildi. Herkes için çok eğitici bir gün oldu.

Year 2 Wednesday Market & Kyrenia Castle Trip – 14 & 21 May 2014

Year 2 went on a school trip to the Wednesday market and Kyrenia Castle. First to go were 2F and 2J
on the 14th May followed by 2H and 2S on the 21st May. Our school trip was part of the Year 2 Topic
‘Our Town Kyrenia’ because we are investigating where food comes from as well as the produce we
grow locally on the island. We are also looking at significant buildings in the local area.
The busy Wednesday market was an enjoyable way to spend the morning. Everyone was in a small
group with an adult and we spent our time walking round the stalls, checking out the local produce
and meeting the stall holders. The boys and girls brought spending money and enjoyed buying fresh,
local fruits and vegetables. This was a perfect opportunity for Year 2 to develop their money skills
thinking about the money they were spending and working out the change they received. We were
even lucky enough to be given some free tasters from the friendly and generous stall holders which
we enjoyed snacking on whilst we browsed the stalls.
From the market we took our heavy bags of fruit and vegetables on to the bus and set off for Kyrenia
castle. When we arrived we set off in our groups and had lots of fun discovering lots of hidden tunnels,
passageways and even the ruins of a shipwrecked boat! Being explorers can really build up an appetite and so we all met up together to enjoy a well-earned lunch break. Whilst letting our food go down
we enjoyed sketching the features of the castle that we had been learning about. Finally we took our
last look around all the nooks and crannies of the castle.
All of Year 2 had a fantastic time on our school trip to the Wednesday market and Kyrenia Castle. A
truly great day out!

2. Sınıfların Çarşamba Pazarı ve Girne Kalesi Gezisi – 14 & 21 Mayıs 2014

2. Sınıf öğrencileri 14 Mayıs’ta 2F ve 2J sınıfları, 21 Mayıs’ta ise 2H ve 2S sınıfları olmak üzere
Çarşamba Pazarı ile Girne Kalesi’ne bir gezi düzenlediler. Okul gezimizi, 2. Sınıf ‘Kasabamız Girne’ Tema dersimizin bir bölümü olarak, adada yetişen ve üretilen yiyecekler üzerine yapmakta olduğumuz
araştırmalar ekseninde gerçekleştirdik. Aynı zamanda lokal bölgemizde bulunan önemli binalara da
bakmaktayız.
Sabahımızı kalabalık Çarşamba pazarında geçirmek son derece eğlenceliydi. Bir yetişkin eşliğinde
küçük gruplar halinde tezgahları dolaşan çocuklar satışa sunulan yiyeceklere bakma ve tezgah sahipleriyle tanışma olanağı buldular. Yanlarında pazarda harcamak için para getiren çocuklar taze meyve ve sebzelerden satın almaktan büyük bir keyif aldılar. Bu, 2. Sınıflara para ile ilgili becerilerini
geliştirmek, harcadıkları ve üst olarak alacakları para miktarlarını düşünüp hesaplamak için mükemmel bir fırsat oldu. Bazı cömert ve samimi tezgahtarların bize denemek için ücretsiz ikram ettikleri
yiyecekleri atıştırarak dolaştığımız için çok şanslıydık.
Marketten sonra meyve ve sebze dolu ağır çantalarımızı otobüste bırakarak Girne Kalesi’ne doğru yol
aldık. Kaleye vardığımızda gruplarımızla gezerek, gizli tünelleri, geçitleri, ve hatta bir gemi enkazının
kalıntılılarını keşfetmekten büyük keyif aldık! Yaptığımız keşifler sonra kabaran iştahımızı fazlasıyla
hakettiğimiz ögle yemeği için mola verdik. Yemeklerimizi yerken kalenin mimari özelliklerini inceleyerek eskiz çizimler yaptık. Ayrılmadan kalenin gizli köşelerine yeniden bakma olanağı yakaladık.
2. Sınıflar olarak Çarşamba Pazarı’na ve Girne Kalesi’ne yaptığımız eğlenceli ve eğitici okul gezimizde
harika zaman geçirdik!

Secondary School Concert – 30 May 2014

On May 30th we had our Secondary School Concert. Our ESK Musicians put on an outstanding show of
rock, pop, traditional, classical, romantic as well as students’ own unique compositions. This year the
variety of musicianship has improved a great deal, setting the high standards of performance of our
music department. I would like to thank our students for their hard work and making us proud, our
supportive colleagues, the technical team; Noah Swanson, Koray Gümüş and Ferhat Yeşilada, our
photographers Selin Örek and Derin Eralp and to Naz Fincancıoğlu and Gözde Kahraman who hosted
the show. Finally, I would like to thank my fellow music colleague, Mr. Phil Smith for his on going
support throughout the year as an excellent music teacher and an inspiration to our children.

muhteşem bir koleksiyon sundular. Bu yıl müzisyen çeşitliliğinin oldukça artmış olması, müzik departmanı olarak performans standartlarımızın çıtasını da yükseltmiştir. Aşağıdaki öğrencilere ortaya
koydukları yoğun çalışmalar nedeniyle bizleri gururlu kıldıkları için, ayrıca destek veren çalışma arkadaşlarımıza ve teknik ekibimize de, yürekten teşekkür etmek istiyorum; Noah Swanson, Koray Gümüş

ESK held the 2014 Swimming Gala on the 16th and 17th June and 75 students were selected to take
part. The individual events had some outstanding performances from Hana Omer 6C, Ella Ozikiz 4N,
Ruzgar Maneoglu 4N, Mert Tersoy 4M and Arda Cengizer 2J.
The 20 best performers have been selected for the ESK Swimming Academy.
The Inter-House Swimming competition was won by Hillarion but Alasia pushed them all the way.

We also held a Tennis Gifted and Talented programme on Tuesday 24th June to pick our best Tennis
players to join the Tennis Academy. We have an abundance of talent in years 2-4. The star performers
were Mehmet Can 4D, Lara Wilks 4R, Demir Olgun 4D and Eda Sevket 2S. I would like to give a thank
you to the year 5/6 boys that helped the younger children and I would like them to take a lead in next
year’s Tennis Academy.

açısından oldukça bereketli olduğunu görmüş olduk. Yıldız oyuncular arasında Mehmet Can 4D, Lara
Wilks 4R, Demir Olgun 4D ve Eda Sevket 2S bulunmakta idi. Yaşça küçük öğrencilere yardım eden 5
ve 6. Sınıf öğrencilerine teşekkür eder, bu öğrencilerden önümüzdeki yıl düzenlenecek olan Tenis
Akademisi’nde liderlik yapmalarını istediğimi şimdiden söylemek istiyorum.

ESK pupils celebrated the end of their primary school days with an outstanding, polished and professional performance of ‘The Lion King’. Set against a spectacular backdrop, painted by talented parent,
Robin Askew, the show was a resounding success with high energy levels and superb acting complemented by amazing costume, make up and dance!
ESK Principal, Hector Macdonald congratulated the pupils saying: ‘This was without doubt the best
production for this age group in my 38 year teaching career. The students really enjoyed it and all of
the parents were incredibly impressed! A pinnacle of achievement for a talented and lovely year
group…’
The performance, linked to Topic work on Africa, raised 650TL for the charity, Water Aid.

ESK öğrencileri ilkokul günlerinin sonunu profesyönelce sunulmuş muhteşem bir ‘Aslan Kral’ gösterisi
ile kutladılar. Okulun yetenekli velisi Robin Askew tarafından boyanmış gözalıcı arka fon önünde sunulan oyun, öğrencilerin yüksek enerjisi, mükemmel oyunculuk becerileri ve harika kostüm, makyaj ve
danslarıyla ses getiren bir başarıya imza attı.
ESK Okul Müdürü, Hector Macdonald öğrencileri kutlayarak: ‘Bu, şüphesiz, 38 yıllık öğretmenlik kariyerim süresince, bu yaş grubu tarafından sunulmuş en iyi yapıt olmuştur. Öğrenciler çok iyi vakit
geçirirken, veliler performans karşısında oldukça etkilendiler. Yetenekli ve harika bir öğrenci grubunda
doruk noktasında bir başarı…’ dedi.
Gösteri, Afrika üzerine yürütülen Tema derslerine bağlı olarak, ‘Water Aid’ adlı yardım kampanyası için
650TL bağış topladı.

MUNKY Conference – 18 May 2014

The MUNKY conference hosted by ESK on Sunday 18th May 2014 was a fantastic experience for all
participants.
Students from 3 other schools in the TRNC (Eastern Mediterranean Doğa College, Bülent Ecevit,
Güzelyurt Turk Maarif College) gathered together to debate important world issues.
Each student acted as a delegate of a given country and debated resolutions that they had prepared
for General Assembly Committees –
GA1 –
Disarmament and International Security, Social
GA2 –
Social, Cultural and Humanitarian and Environment and Ecology.
All UN etiquette and procedures were abided to. Delegates argued, supported, criticised and
questioned these resolutions just as they would in a United Conference. The Chairs ‘Sıla Akın & Tedi
Murray’ of Year 13, were a formidable team ensuring that order in the Conference was kept.
The event was held all day including time for a social lunch where students had the opportunity to
mingle and make acquaintances.
It was a very successful day and all delegates made a fantastic contribution.

ESK’nın evsahipliği yaptığı MUNKY konferansı 18 Mayıs 2014 tarihinde gerçekleşti ve tüm katılımcılar
için harika bir deneyim teşkil etti.
Kuzey Kıbrıs’ta faaliyet gösteren üç başka okuldan öğrenciler (Doğu Akdeniz Doğa Koleji, Bülent Ecevit
Anadolu Lisesi, Güzelyurt Türk Maarif Koleji) önemli dünya sorunları üzerine müzakere etmek üzere
toplandılar.
Her öğrenci Genel Toplantı Komiteleri için verilen ülkenin temsilcisi olarak hareket edip, hazırlamış
oldukları çözümler üzerine tartıştılar–

Silahsızlanma ve Uluslararası Güvenlik, Sosyal
GT2 –
Sosyal, Kültürel ve İnsani ile Çevre ve Ekoloji.
Tüm BM norm ve prosedürlerine uyuldu. Ülke temsilcileri, aynı Birleşmiş Milletler Konferansı’ndan olsa
gerçekleşeceği gibi, bu çözümler üzerine tartıştılar, desteklediler, eleştirdiler ve sorguladılar. Konferansa başkanlık eden 13. Sınıf öğrencileri Sıla Akın ve Tedi Murray, müthiş bir takım çalışması sergileyerek Konferansın düzen içerisinde gerçekleşmesini sağladılar.
Gün boyunca süren etkinlik, öğrencilerin tanışıp sohbet edebilmelerine olanak veren bir öğle yemeğini
de kapsıyordu.
Bu, tüm ülke temsilcilerinin olağanüstü katkılarda bulunduğu, çok başarılı geçen bir gün oldu.

Year 6 Disco - 25 June 2014

It was the last week of Primary School for Year 6 and we decided that a memorable event had to be
organised for this special year group. The Primary School Council came up with the idea of having a
DISCO in the ESK Great Hall, thanks to the support of the ESK board. The lights were arranged, the
beverages were prepared, the pizzas were ready and the crisps were open to be enjoyed. As the clock
struck 4pm you could hear the excitement from outside. The pupils all dressed in their disco outfits
and prepared to have a wonderful time together. It was clear from the first moment that it was going
to be a great evening. The Year 6 of 2014 had a fun-filled evening and the Great Hall was a pleasure
to witness as the whole year group were full of smiles and laughter. It was an unforgettable event and
I wish all Year 6 pupils great success in Secondary school

6. Sınıf öğrencilerimizin İlkokul’da geçirecekleri son haftaya girmiştik ki, bu özel grup için unutulmaz
bir etkinlik planlamak istedik. İlkokul Okul Konseyi olarak, ESK Yönetim Kurulu’nun da desteğiyle,
Büyük Salon’da bir DİSKO düzenlemeye karar verdik. Işıklar ayarlandı, meşrubatlar hazırlandı, keyifle
yenmek üzere pizzalar kesildi, patates cipsleri tabaklara koydu. Saat 4 olunca, salonun dışında heyecanlı bir bekleyiş duyuldu. Öğrenciler en güzel disko kıyafetleri içerisinde, hep birlikte harika zaman
geçirmek üzere hazırdılar. İlk anlardan bunun muhteşem bir akşam olacağı kesindi. 2014’ün 6.
Sınıfları eğlence dolu bir akşam geçirirken, Büyük Salonu dolduran gülücükler ve kahkahalara şahit
olmak gerçek bir mutluluktu. Unutulmaz bir akşam oldu. Tüm 6. Sınıflara Ortaokul’da başarılar dilerim.

Primary Science Week – 16-20 June 2014

ESK’s first Science Week took place 16th–20th June, using the theme ‘everyday experimenting’. This
theme encouraged children to understand that science really can happen anywhere, at any time using
just about anything. Children enjoyed a whole day of science experimenting dressed up as real scientists and used everyday objects in their year groups to take part in chemistry, biology and physics investigations, some parents even joined in on the fun! Children also had the opportunity to visit the real
working science labs in the secondary school. Children experimented with a range of specialist science equipment and received clear explanations from secondary staff. Every lunchtime, throughout
the week, Miss Dix set up pop up science experiments that children could try. There were also chances for children to swap classes with other year groups to find out what science had been taking place
throughout the year. Children also become champions for some famous scientists in our ‘science factor’ competition and presented their work to the whole school, providing reasons why their scientist
was the best. Children then voted and ESK’s first ‘science factor’ winner was James Watt! To finish off
the week children prepared experiments and investigations for ESK’s science fair. All children worked
so very hard and the stalls on display were mindblowing! The judging panel took their time to visit and
judge all stalls and after much deliberation awarded a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in each year group, with a
group in 3J winning 1st place overall with their impressive lung capacity experiment.
All children and teaching staff worked so very hard to make an amazing Science week. Thank you also
to all the volunteers who gave up their time to make it happen. We are all already looking forward to
the next one!

İlkokul Bilim Haftası – 16-20 Haziran 2014

ESK bünyesindeki ile Bilim Haftası, ‘her güne bir deney’ teması ile 16-20 Haziran tarihleri arasında
gerçekleşti. Bu tema, çocukları bilimin her yerde, herhangi bir zamanda ve konuda gerçekleşebileceğini anlamaları konusunda teşvik etti. Çocuklar beyaz gömlekler içerisindeki gerçek bilim insanları gibi giyinip gün boyunca deney yapmaktan büyük keyif alırken, her yaş grubu gündelik nesneleri
kullanarak, bazı velilerin de eşlik ettiği, kimya, biyoloji ve fizik araştırmalarına katıldılar! Çocuklar
ayrıca Ortaokul-Lise bölümünde faaliyet gösteren gerçek bilim laboratuvarlarını da ziyaret etme
olanağı buldular. Bu ziyaretler sırasında çok çeşitli uzman bilimsel araç gereç ile deney yapma fırsatı
yakalayan çocuklara, ortaokul-lise personeli tarafından açıklamalar yapıldı. Hafta süresince her öğle
arası, Miss Dix çocukların hemen, anlık olarak deneyebileceği bilimsel deneyler hazırladı. Çocuklar
ayrıca başka yaş gruplarıyla sınıf değiştirerek o yaş grubun yıl boyunca gerçekleştirdikleri bilim dersleriyle ilgili bilgi edinme olanağı buldular. Çocuklar ‘science factor’ adını verdiğimiz yarışmada, bazı bilim
insanlarının neden en iyisi olduğunu sebeplerini belirterek tüm okul önünde yaptıkları sunuşlarla, bu
ünlü bilim insanları adına şampiyonluk kazandılar. Sunuşlar sonrasında gerçekleşen oylamada,
çocuklar ESK’nın ilk ‘science factor’ galibi olarak James Watt’I seçtiler! Haftayı sonlandırmak için
çocuklar düzenlenen ESK Bilim Fuar’ı için deney ve araştırmalar hazırladılar. Çocukların tümü de çok
çalıştılar ve tezgahları üzerinde sergiledikleri yapıtlar akıllara durgunluk verecek cinsteydi! Oylama
komitesi tüm tezgahlara zaman ayırarak dolaştıktan ve uzun süren görüşmelerden sonra her yaş
grubu içerisinden seçtikleri grupları 1., 2. ve 3.lük ile ödüllendirdiler. Çok etkileyici akçiğer kapasite
deneyleri ile 3J içerisinden bir grup birinci seçildi.
Bunun muhteşem bir Bilim Haftası olması için tüm öğrenciler ve öğretim personeli canla başla
çalıştılar. Bunu mümkün kılmak için vakitlerini ayıran tüm gönüllülere yürekten teşekkür ediyorum.
Bizler bir sonraki Bilim Haftası için heyecanlanmaya başladık bile!

Y4 Kantara Residential Trip Blog – 20-22 May

Day 1
Year 4 have arrived safely at Kantara eager and excited to begin their activities. The children have
toured the site and taken part in some team building games. The teachers have been racing the
children around camp and everyone enjoyed a much deserved lunch break. The children are now
unpacking their suitcases and making their beds. After our midday rest the fun will begin again.
Year 4 ended their first day at Kantara with a magical tea light campfire. Miss Roberts and the
children sang many songs before bedtime. All children chatted by torch light, and then quickly in most
cases fell asleep.
Day 2
This morning the children have refuelled with a delicious Turkish breakfast and fun filled activities
await them.
Children took part in many fun activities including yoga, painting a mural, creating 3D sculptures,
sketching Kantara castle, going for a mountain walk and designing a promotional poster about
Kantara. The children are loving residential and want to stay forever!
In the evening the children took part in ESK’s got talent and to finish off our fun day we had a
fantastic disco, children then went to bed for a well-deserved rest.
Day 3
Today, children have woken up to their final morning at Kantara, suitcases have been packed and
they are now playing team games until lunch. All the children are having a fantastic time and are
looking forward to telling their families all about it when they get home.

1. Gün
4. Sınıflar Kantara’yı güvenli ve aktivitelere başlamak için oldukça
heyecanlı bir şekilde varmışlardır. Çocuklar kamp alanını gezmişler ve
çeşitli
takımdaşlık
aktivitelerine
katılmışlardır.
Öğretmenler
öğrencilerin ardından kamp alanında koşuşturduktan sonra, herkesin
fazlasıyla hakettiği öğle yemeğinin keyfini çıkardılar. Çocuklar
bavullarını boşaltıp, yataklarını hazırladılar. Öğle dinlenme saatimizden
sonra eğlencelerimiz yeniden başlayacaktır.
4. Sınıf öğrencileri Kantara’daki ilk günlerini büyülü bir mum ışığı kamp
ateşi ile sonlandırdılar. Miss Roberts ile çocuklar uyku saatinden önce
hep birlikte pek çok şarkı söylediler. Çocukların tümü el fenerlerinin
aydınlığından sohbet ettikten sonra kısa sürede uyuyakaldılar.
2. Gün
Bu sabah çocuklar lezzetli bir Türk kahvaltısı ile yeniden enerjilerini topladılar ve onları bekleyen
eğlence dolu aktivitelere hazır oldular.
Çocuklar yoga, fresk boyama, 3-boyutlu heykel yaratma, Kantara kalesinin eskiz çizimini yapma, dağ
yürüyüşüne çıkma ve Kantara ile ilgili reklam posteri
hazırlama gibi pek çok eğlence dolu aktiviteye katıldılar.
Çocuklar konaklamalı gezilerini çok sevdiler ve sonsuza
kadar burada kalmak istiyorlar!
Akşamüzeri çocuklar yetenek sizsiniz yarışmasına katıldılar
ve ardından günü bitirirken harika bir disko düzenledik.
Daha sonra çocuklar fazlasıyla hakettikleri bir uyku için
yataklarına gittiler.
3. Gün
Bugün çocuklar Kantara’daki son sabahlarına uyandılar,
bavullarını hazırladıktan sonra öğle yemeğine kadar takım oyunları oynuyorlar. Çocuklarımızın tümü de
harika vakit geçirdiler ve eve döndüklerinde ailelerine yaptıklarımızı anlatmak için can atıyorlar.

Year 9 Karpaz Residential Trip Blog - 5-7 May

The Year 9 Trip is intended to be built around Team Building Activities, taking the students to a different environment to challenge them in different ways to help them to develop Leadership and Teamwork skills. This is a very important aspect of education as it helps prepare students for real life experience and ready them for the challenges that will come later in the world of professional employment.
Day 1:
We started the trip with a visit to Incirli Cave. This was a new and exciting opportunity for our students
and for some of our staff as well! A guided tour of this cave opened explained to students the geographical formations of caves including stalagmites and stalactites and some students were lucky
enough to spot some bats nesting on the roof.
From Incirli, we left to Balci Plaza our base for the next few days where we would start our team building activities.
Students were challenged by a range of activities in the afternoon, from the range of blindfold activities - to test their communication and teamwork skills to the ‘slack line’ and ‘spider’s web’ challenges
to test them both physically and mentally. The students rose to the challenges well and by dinner time
all were more than hungry.
After dinner students engaged in a hide and seek type activity in the dark which certainly became the
most common request for the next few days, ‘can we play hide and seek again?’
Day 2:
Our second day started with rain! Our carousel of morning team challenges was moved to the shelter
of the hotel and students moved between a range of brain teasing and team building challenges.
Mathematical problems, Co-ordination and Balance challenges and visual puzzles kept the students
busy until we headed out to Apostolus Andreas on the tip of Karpaz. Here students carried out a
sketching competition which was very hard for staff to judge and also received a religious and historical lesson on the significance of Apostolus Andreas.
After a fantastic packed lunch from Balci Plaza we headed out to the Golden Beach where students
enjoyed some free time as well as some sporting activities.
The sun came out as we returned to the hotel and after dinner we headed down to the beach to toast
marshmallows on the barbeque. A final round of hide and seek and it was time for bed.
Day 3:
Our final day saw a ‘wide game’ of Colours being played – this was swiftly renamed the ‘Hunger
Games’ by the students and they spent several hours working in teams trying to hunt each other
down. However, as is often the way, lunch time arrived without any clear winner emerging.
Sadly it was time to return to school. With so many happy students and some exhausted teachers we
can only conclude it was a great success, and the many questions of ‘when can we go again?’ only
confirmed this.

Year 8 Travel Writing Trip – 28 May 2014

Year 8 English A went on a fantastic trip to Kyrenia Harbour and Castle as part of their unit of work on the genre
of Travel Writing. The day started at the Castle. The pupils all worked hard to discover as much information
about this famous monument as possible. They would use these notes to write a persuasive brochure enticing
tourists to come and visit. Next a jaunt down the Harbour was arranged where they were encouraged to dig
deep into their imaginations and use all the descriptive devices they had been taught to paint a picture in
words of this stunning landmark.
Finally as part of review writing we all chose a restaurant and ordered our lunch. Unbeknown to the staff, the
students were on a mission to rate and write up a review of the restaurant they had chosen. This task in particular resulted in some fantastic writing and some terrible reviews I am sorry to say!
The pupils did the school proud. They were sensible, well behaved and keen to gather as much material as possible for their writing task. Opposite is a beautiful piece written in the style of Bill Bryson by Caleb Ruby.
8. Sınıfların Gezi Yazarlığı Gezisi – 28 Mayıs 2014
yazan Clare Donohue, Ortaokul-Lise İngiliz Dili ve Edebiyatı Öğretmeni
8. Sınıf İngilizce A grubu, Gezi Yazarlığı üzerine yaptıkları çalışmaların bir parçası olarak Girne Limanı ve Kalesi’ne harika bir gezi düzenlediler. Gün Kale’de başladı. Öğrenciler bu önemli eser hakkında mümkün olan en çok
bilgiyi edinebilmek için işe koyuldular. Topladıkları bilgilerle, turistleri burayı gelip ziyaret etme konusunda ikna
edecek broşürler hazırlamaları istenecekti. Daha sonra Liman’da dolaşma olanağı yakalayan öğrenciler,
hayalgüçlerinin derinliklerine dalıp, öğrendikleri tüm tasvirleme araçlarını kullanarak bu gözalıcı kent simgesi ile
ilgili sözcüklerle bir tablo yaratmaları istendi.
Son olarak eleştiri yazarlığının bir bölümü olarak öğle yemeğimizi yiyeceğimiz restoranlar seçtik. Restoran personelinin bilmediği konu ise, öğrencilere seçtikleri restoranlarla ilgili puanlama yapıp, eleştiri yazmak gibi bir
görev verilmiş olduğu idi. Özellikle bu çalışma bazı muhteşem yazarlık örneklerine neden oldu, ancak ne yazık ki
restoranlarla ilgili korkunç eleştiri yazılarıyla de sonuçlandı!
Okullarını hakkıyla temsil ettikleri için öğrencilerimizle gurur duyuyoruz. Hepsi de, kendilerine verilen yazın
görevlerini yerine getirmek için mümkün olan en çok materyali toparken hevesli, aklı başında ve terbiyeli davranışlar sergilediler. Karşı sayfada Caleb Ruby tarafından Bill Bryson stilinde kaleme alınmış harika bir parçayı
okuyabilirsiniz.

Kyrenia at a Glance

After leaving Bellapais higher up in
the foothills of the mountains my
companions and I decided to
travel a short distance to the
seaside, to a more touristic sector
of Kyrenia on the harbor. I had
heard that area had a rather tacky
reputation, especially among the
locals, for its overcooked food,
overpriced goods and overrated
attractions. However, I was willing
to visit all the same.
After a typical Cypriot drive- the
bus driver swerving to and fro on
the windy back roads and
obnoxiously honking every ten seconds or so- on typical Cypriot roads- bumpy, dusty and
approximately 5 meters wide yet still a four lane road- of typical Cypriot ride length – about five
minutes due to the island being so small and the drivers being so impatient- we file out of the bus
onto the dock. I almost instantly regret my choice of clothing, much wishing I had worn shorts rather
than my jeans as the blazing sun beats down on me. Nevertheless, there was not a cloud in the sky,
and I would’ve described the weather, had the heat been slightly less severe, as perfect for a day on
the seashore, which is exactly what we were there to do.
The first landmark we visited was the Kyrenia Castle. I had visited many castles across the world, and
I can honestly say this was the first that’s moat had been transformed into a car park. We enter the
castle via a bridge over the car park/moat, through a series of tunnels that lead us to the main
courtyard. From there we made our way through the various sections of the castle including: the
dungeon guarded by disturbing mannequins grotesquely portraying torture techniques during the
Middle Ages, the underground cistern and the magnificent views of the harbor and Mediterranean Sea
from the walls and towers.
After successfully meeting up together in the courtyard, having managed to stay alive despite the
completely unblocked fifty foot falls and marveling at the remarkably large and photogenic lizards we
headed out to look for a place to eat.
We left the fortress and walked back out onto the pier. It was then, and on the way to our, that I was to
observe the pier in more detail. The harbor was shaped somewhat like a cove, a semicircle of water
carved into the land. The water was still: not unusually so, but its calmness was noticeable against the
bustling, hectic atmosphere of the dock, full of tourists and marketers practically shoving brochures in
my face.
There were boats of many shapes and sizes roped to the dock: yachts, speedboats, fishing boats and
so on. The menus of the restaurants and cafes being almost strictly confined to seafood, along with
the vendors advertising their boat trips along the road made it clear that the sea had many uses in
Kyrenia.
My lunch was nothing special; nothing noteworthy be it negative or positive, and apart from some
minor miscommunication which led to some inconvenience it ended up working out alright. After
paying and walking back to the bus we were on our way to our next destination. At a glance: a little bit
of nature, a little bit of history and a little bit of culture all contributed to my enjoyable time, and
overall, Kyrenia was certainly a great experience.

Year 5 ‘The Final Curtain’ Performance – 23 June 2014
Year 5 Parents were in for a real treat when they came to watch the Year 5 Production, ‘The Final Curtain’. The children performed a medley of; songs, danced, played instruments and even included
some performance poetry. The upbeat (and at times most humorous) performances, the bright costumes and the children’s smiling faces, could only be concluded with a magnificent finale. This was in
the form of the Cypriot ‘Susta’ dance and as the audiences faces lit up there was only one more thing
to do before the Final Curtain was drawn and that was to invite the audience to dance with the children. A beautiful ending to the performance the children united with their families and a memorable
end for the Year 5 pupils.
5. Sınıfların ‘Son Perde’ Gösterisi – 23 Haziran 2014
5. Sınıf velileri, 5. Sınıf Gösterisi ‘Son Perde’yi izlemeye geldiklerinde onları gerçek bir şölen bekliyordu. Çocuklar gösteri süresince çok çeşitli şarkılar söylediler, dans ettiler, enstrümanlar çaldılar ve hatta şiirler okudular. Parlak renkli kostümleri ve çocukların gülümseyen yüzleri ile yüksek tempolu (ve
zaman zaman esprili) performanslar, muhteşem bir finalle son buldu. Bu Kıbrıs halk dansı ‘Susta’dan
oluşuyordu ve seyircilerin yüzlerinin aydınlanması ile ‘Son Perde’ gösterisi bitmeden yapılacak son
birşey kalmıştı; çocuklarla birlikte dans etmeleri için seyircileri davet etmek. Bu gösteriye güzel bir son
teşkil ederken, 5. Sınıf öğrencilerinin aileleri ile birlikte dans ettikleri unutulmaz bir anı oldu.

Football for Thought - 23 & 24 June 2014

Often students can get too focused on the core subjects of Maths, Science and Languages without
truly understanding how these skills transfer to the world of work once we leave education. Employers
are usually far more interested in whether we are problem solvers, organisers, leaders and effect
team workers rather than whether we can perform an effective quadratic equation. Days of creative
and contextualised learning, such as the ‘Football for Thought’ event are very important in developing
our students and making them more than just a part of an exam production line.
The Football for Thought event was designed to take a huge are of current media focus and look beyond the sport to some of the issues behind the world cup. Students worked in their house groups
completing learning activities in each of their subject areas, completing Mathematical challenges,
learning skills of debating, examining the social problems of hosting the World Cup and developing
their research skills and much more. The event culminated with a whole school debate activity where
students prepared and presented a bid for a future World Cup, demonstrating that they had taken into
account economic, social, environment and logistical considerations.
For those students who attended it was a rich and rewarding learning experience and it was good to
see students developing their social skills as they worked with students from different year groups
who they would not normally get the chance to interact with.
Our final afternoon ended with a mini World Cup of our own up at the stadium, where Alasia house
emerged victorious.
Well done to all staff and students who took part. Many thanks to Mr Wild for coordinating events; it
was a fantastic way to end another busy school year.

Y3 Overnight Residential – 12 & 13 June 2014

On Thursday 12th-Friday 13th June 2014 Year 3 took part in an Overnight Residential at School. The
theme for the residential was ‘Reach for the Stars’ with the children completing various team challenges to win points. The children took part in tower building, drama, teambuilding challenges, art activities and star mapping during the days. During the evening the theme was the same, and the children got to learn more about the constellations of star in our solar system and were involved in a
Maths activity about the planets. They enjoyed a game of ‘Octopus’ which helped to tire them out for
the evening. The children became relaxed whilst star gazing and many managed to pick out some of
the bigger constellations. After a story and a hot chocolate it was time for bed. All of the children were
very sensible and went off to sleep quickly, much to the relief of all the teachers! When morning came
it was a strange experience to wake at school and after a delicious breakfast the children were ready
for another fun filled day. All of the Year 3 team were so pleased at the children for behaving so well
during our residential time. It is not easy to stay away from home, and we are so proud of them. Well
done Year 3!
3. Sınıfların Gece Konaklaması – 12 ve 13 Haziran 2014

12 Haziran Perşembe ve 13 Haziran Cuma günleri 3. Sınıf öğrencileri Okulda bir Gece Konaklaması
gerçekleştirdiler. Konaklamanın teması ‘Yıldızlara Ulaş’ olarak belirlendi ve çocuklar puan kazanmak
için çeşitli takım çalışmaları yaptılar. Çocuklar bu günler boyunca kule yapımı, drama, takım oyunları,
sanat çalışmaları yapıp, yıldız haritaları hazırladılar. Akşam olunca, aynı temaya bağlı olarak çocuklar
güneş sistemimizdeki yıldız takımları ile ilgili daha fazla bilgi edindiler, ayrıca gezegenlerle ilgili bir Matematik aktivitesi yaptılar. Daha sonra, geceye hazırlık olması açısından iyice yorulmalarına yardımcı
olan ‘Octopus’ (Ahtapot) adlı oyununu keyifle oynadılar. Yıldızları seyrederken iyice rahatlayan
çocuklar, daha büyük yıldız takımlarını gökyüzünde başarıyla seçebildiler. Masal saati ve sıcak çikolatanın ardından çocuklar uyku saatine hazırdı. Tümü de çok uslu davranıp, öğretmenlere kolaylık,
hemencecik uykuya daldılar! Sabah olunca okulda uyanmak herkes için tuhaf bir deneyimdi; lezzetli
kahvaltımız sonrasında başka eğlenceli dolu güne hazırdık. 3. Sınıf takımı olarak çocukların konaklama süresince gösterdikleri uyumlu, pozitif davranışlar karşısında oldukça memnuniyet duyduk. Evden
uzak olmak kolay bir iş değil, hepsiyle o kadar gurur duyuyoruz ki! Aferin size 3. Sınıf!

Summer Day - 26 June 2014

The ESK Primary School Council wanted to add a bit of colour and excitement to the final week of the
2013-2014 educational year and came up with the concept of “Summer has come, it’s time to go out
and have fun”. ESK SUMMER DAY was born.
Pupils from Years 1 to 6 all dressed up in their summer outfits, shorts, t-shirt, hats, sunglasses etc...
Each pupil donated 5TL for a very good cause, were half the money that was raised was to be donated
to KYRENIA ANIMAL RESCUE. As one of the main events of Summer Day a picnic was held on the large
green area. All pupils brought food from home which they shared with their friends.
The day was filled with laughter, music and friendship - ESK’s first Summer Day event was a great success.

İlkokul Öğrenci Konseyi olarak 2013-2014 eğitim yılının son haftasına biraz renk ve heyecan katmak
istediğimizden olacak ki, “Yaz geldi, şimdi dışarıya çıkıp eğlenme vakti” kavramını geliştirdik. Böylelikle
ESK YAZ GÜNÜ hayat buldu.
1. Sınıftan 6. Sınıfa kadar tüm öğrencilerimiz okula yazlık kıyafetler; şortlar, tişörtler, şapkalar, güneş
gözlükleri içerisinde geldiler. Her öğrenci iyi bir amaç için toplanan ve yarısı GİRNE HAYVANLARI KURTARMA MERKEZİ (KAR)’a gidecek olan 5TL’lik bağışlar yaptılar. Yaz Günü’nün ana etkinliklerinin biri
olarak büyük yeşil alanda bir piknik düzenlendi. Öğrenciler evden getirdikleri yiyecekleri arkadaşlarıyla
paylaştılar.
Gün kahkaha, müzik ve dostlukla doldu – ESK’nın ilk Yaz Günü büyük bir başarı oldu.

Nursery had so much fun on our trip to the beach. We played in the sea and made sandcastles with
our parents and teachers. For lunch we sat in the shade and enjoyed our picnic. It was a perfect
opportunity for the children, parents and teachers to get together before the end of the school year.

Nursery sınıfları olarak deniz kenarına yaptığımız gezide çok eğlendik. Denizde oyunlar oynayıp, aile ve
öğretmenlerimizle birlikte kumdan kaleler yaptık. Öğle yemeği için gölgeye oturup, pikniğimizin keyfini
çıkardık. Bu, okul yılı son ermeden çocuklar, ebeveynler ve öğretmenleri bir araya getiren harika bir
gezi oldu.
