25.12.2013
WASTE-3-2014: Recycling of raw materials
from products and buildings
Specific Challenge: Advances in many complex products and buildings, such as energy efficient
buildings, electrical and electronic equipment (EEE), (electric) vehicles, airplanes, multi-material
packaging solutions, bring to the society benefits in the form of a better performance, reduced transport
weight, decreased energy consumption etc. Complex products contain many different raw materials and
their reuse, recycling and recovery schemes are also complex and imply different steps, ranging from
collection and logistics to refining and purification of materials…
Scope: All proposals should facilitate the market uptake of solutions developed through industriallydriven multidisciplinary consortia. Proposals shall address only one of the following issues of sustainable
recycling and recovery of raw materials:
 developing innovative technological solutions, including pre-processing technologies, comprehensive
metallurgical recovery and advanced information and communication technologies, for the recovery of
minerals and metals (including Critical Raw Materials), polymers and plastics, and wood-fibre based
materials from complex end-of-life products…
Expected Impact: In the medium to longer term unlocking a significant volume of various raw
materials within EU28 through conversion of wastes or raw materials not currently exploited into
valuable resources. In the shorter term measurable increase in the efficiency of exploitation of secondary
raw materials’ deposits ('urban mines') against the state of the art. Increased range and yields of recovered
materials and energy efficiency, reduced environmental footprint measured by qualitative and
quantitative indicators. Contribution to achieving the objectives of the EIP on Raw Materials.
Type of action: Research and innovation actions
The conditions related to this topic are provided at the end of this call and in the General
Annexes.

EE 2-2015. Buildings design for new highly energy performing buildings
Expected Impact: Significant increase of the share of 'nearly zero-energy'
buildings with the aim of 100% market uptake by the end of 2020. Costs
reductions of at least 15% compared to current situation, with additional
benefits in terms of energy reduction. Demonstration for net-zero energy
districts taking advantage of onsite or nearby-generation of renewable
energy.

Secure, Clean and Efficient Energy-Energy Efficiency
EE 4-2014: Construction Skills
 Expected Impact: Reduced skills mismatch and increased managerial
capacity to support innovation and sustainable energy use in buildings
through new leadership and work practices. Improved participation,
qualifications and skills for a pool of talented women in the
construction sector.
 Every million Euro of EU support is expected to increase the skills of at
least 2000 craftsmen, or 500 construction sector managers, resulting in
savings and/or renewable energy production of at least 25 GWh per
year and increasing the employability of the building workforce. In
addition projects should explain how they will result in increased
investments in innovative sustainable energy technologies.

Secure, Clean and Efficient Energy-Competitive Low-Carbon Energy
LCE 11-2014/2015 Developing next generation technologies for biofuels and sustainable
alternative fuels
 Expected impact: The new developed technology pathways should
permit the use of new feedstock sources that do not compete directly or
indirectly with food or feed production for resources, or a more efficient
conversion of the current ones. A favourable energy balance is
expected, as well as a significant potential for cost reduction, which
would permit these fuels to eventually compete favourably with fossil or
older-generation equivalent fuels. The development of new
technologies will permit robust and reliable assessment of the
environmental and social benefits with respect to current technologies,
notably in terms of GHG performance, energy balance, efficient use of
natural resources, decentralised energy production, and job creation in
rural areas, as well as secure and affordable energy supply in Europe or
worldwide.

25.12.2013
Secure, Clean and Efficient Energy- Competitive Low-Carbon Energy
LCE 15-2014 Enabling decarbonisation of the fossil fuel-based power sector and energy
intensive industry through CCS
Expected impact: Demonstration of safe and environmentally sound CO2
storage will play a key role in optimising the safe operation of storage
sites and in fine-tuning regulatory issues, in promoting confidence in
CO2 storage and building public awareness of CCS. The cost- and
resource-effective application of CCS in industrial operations will
expand the available options for CCS and provide a stepping stone to its
wider deployment. Pilot-scale demonstration projects should contribute
to accelerating the development and deployment of CCS through an
enhanced and effective cooperation in research and innovation between
various stakeholders and Member States, thereby allowing a more
efficient use and stronger leverage of financial resources and promoting
knowledge sharing.

of sustainable development objectives in Europe and internationally
Expected impact: Enhanced impact of EU research and innovation activities through
evident synergies with relevant international research and innovation programmes and
other initiatives. Greater EU influence in multilateral processes and better support to
implementation of international commitments. Significant contribution to evidencebased policy and appropriate, cost-effective management, planning and adaptation
decisions by the public sector, businesses, industry and society addressing global
challenges in the EU and beyond through the provision and effective communication of
trustworthy science-based information. Increased coordination between different
actors and stakeholders to minimise the risk of overlaps and duplication of efforts.

When the ground shakes from earthquakes, the oceans, or the atmosphere, it not only translates
(up-down, sideways), but also undergoes rotational motions. To fully characterize seismic sources
and wave fields theoreticians have insisted for decades that these motions should also be
measured. However, this was hampered by the substantial technical difficulties in observing
rotational motions with the necessary sensitivity. This implies that the observation of the complete
ground motion is still an unsolved problem. Based on promising pilot studies in the past years, we
aim at breaking new ground with an innovative instrumentation strategy that would allow solving
this outstanding problem. If the strategy is successful the new observable is expected to have an
impact in a wide range of fields making it a classical high-risk high-gain situation. We aim at the
establishment of the first-of-its-kind six-component seismic observatory based on ring-laser
technology, the field deployment of portable fibre-optic based rotation sensors, the integration of
the new observations with the global seismological data infrastructure, and the reporting of
discoveries in a variety of fields based on the new observable. At the end of the project we expect to
have substantially pushed forward the emerging field field of rotational seismology with new
standards, and recommendations for the use of rotation sensors in Earth sciences and engineering.
We expect advances in understanding 1) the dynamics of volcano’s interior, 2) the origin of the
Earth’s ocean generated noise field, 3) and seismic inverse problems for structure and source using
the new rotational observables. This will impact several pressing problems of societal relevance in
particular in association with natural hazards such as volcanic eruptions and earthquake strong
ground motion as well as geophysical exploration.

1.2 billion people worldwide lack access to safe drinking water. Drinking water quality is
threatened by newly emerging organic micro-pollutants (pesticides, pharmaceuticals,
industrial chemicals) in source waters. Nanofiltration is a technology that is expected to play
a key role in future water treatment processes due to its effectiveness in removal of
micropollutants. However, the loss of membrane flux due to fouling is one of the main
impediments in the development of membrane processes for use in drinking water
treatment. Currently there is a wholly inadequate mechanistic understanding of the role of
biofilm on the fouling of nanofiltration membranes.Applying techniques including confocal
microscopy, force spectroscopy, and infrared spectroscopy using an experimental
programme informed by a technique known as scale-down together with mathematical
modelling, it is confidently expected that significant advances will be gained in the
mechanistic understanding of nanofiltration biofouling. The specific objectives are: 1. How is
the rate of formation and extent of such biofilms influenced by the biological response to the
local microenvironment? 2 Elucidate the effect of extracellular polysaccharide substances on
physical properties, composition and structure of these biofilms. 3: Investigate mechanisms
to enhance biofilm removal by a physical detachment process complemented by techniques
that alter biofilm material properties.A more fundamental insight into the mechanisms of
nanofiltration operation will help in further development of this treatment method in future
water treatment processes.
