Canadian Hanoverian Society Chairman’s Message by Michael Boyd
By all reports we had a very successful inspection tour this year, with the exception of Mother Nature
dumping 10 inches of snow on Calgary the day before their mare performance test, inspections and mare
and foal shows. However, even though the mare and foal show had to be cancelled, three mares did the
MPT, and a few mares and foals were inspected and registered.
I would like to thank all the owners who hosted an inspection site this year, and also thank Maren
nd
Schendler our judge from the Verband who arrived in Toronto on September 2 and toured Canada for
the next three weeks. Also thanks to Inga Hamilton who toured Ontario and Quebec with Maren and to
Ursula Hosking and Inga who were the judging commission at the PEI inspection.
At Parkwood Stables and Dreamcatcher Meadows Maren also gave young breeder training sessions and
I understand this was very well received. Information on the Young Breeder Championship can be found
at: www.young-breeders.com.
We will be running our annual stallion service auction again this year and I would like to thank in advance
all our participating stallion owners and Kathleen Sulz, Kathleen Richardson and Nancy Schmidt for their
great work on the stallion service auction.
I remind our members that Equine Canada has adopted a new Code of Practice for the care and handling
of horses and this document can be found on the Equine Canada website: www.equinecanada.ca found
on the home page and can be easily downloaded.
Relative to other sport horse breeding clubs in North America our membership is holding its own and we
seem to have modest growth in the number of mares in the studbook owned by our members and the
number of foals being registered each year. As well we have an increasing number of high quality
approved stallions standing in Canada and they are being increasingly used, see the 2014 breeding
report in this newsletter.
On a personal note, I made a very difficult decision in September to sell my farm and my plan is to keep
one mare but I am selling my other horses. I have been Chairman since the CHS was formed in 2008
and I would like to step down from this position by the end of the current two year term which ends in
2016. I will manage our annual frozen semen importation from Celle again this year, but I would like to
have one of our members pick up this function by the end of next year. I will be discussing this transition
with the executive of the Eastern and Western Breeders Clubs.
Hanoverian Breeding Club of Western Canada: New Officers and Directors
After the recent nomination process and running an election for President of the Western Club the
following will be the officers and directors of the club for the next three years:
President:
Vice President:
Secretary-Treasurer:
Director:

Mr. John Dingle
Ms. Kathleen Sulz
Mr. Matthew von Platen

Camrose, Alberta
Mr. George von Platen would like to thank everyone for electing him as President. He's hoping that he
can bring everyone together to make a more active Western Hanoverian Club. In the meantime he has
some healing to do. So congratulations to all that were elected and he is looking forward to working with
everyone!
The Canadian Hanoverian Society 2014 Inspection Tour by Michael Boyd
rd
The Canadian Hanoverian Society had eight inspection sites this year beginning on September 3 and 4
st
at Parkwood Stables near Guelph and ending on September 21 in PEI. Our judge from the Hanoverian
Verband was Maren Schendler.
th
At Parkwood Stables there were foal registrations, a foal show, mare registrations, a mare show and
mare performance test. The best dressage bred foal was a colt by Fabregas/Fidertanz bred and owned
by Kathleen Richardson. The best jumper bred foal was a colt by Bon Balou/Anhaltiner bred and owned
by Heather McNaughton. The winner of the mare performance test and also best mare in show was
Cornelia (Cornet Obolensky/Foxhunter) bred and owned by Christian Poschung.
Cornelia
At South Lane Farm there were foal registrations, a foal show, mare registrations, a mare show and mare
performance test. The best dressage bred foal was a colt by Bugatti Hilltop/Desperados bred and owned
by Susan Ziereisen. The best jumper bred foal was a colt by Diarado/Graf Top bred and owned by Grand
Coteau Stable. The winner of the mare performance test and also the best mare in show was Pr. C.
Bellarina (Belissimo M/Sherlock Holmes) bed and owned by South Lane Farm.
Bellarina
In Calgary due to the unexpected snowfall the mare show had to be cancelled. There were a few foal
registrations and mare inspections and three mares did the mare performance test. The winner of the
mare performance test was Argentina (Avagon/Foxhunter) bred and owned by George von Platen.
Argentina
At the other inspection sites at Ferme de Lys in Quebec, Winnipeg, Langley BC and Pemberton, BC there
were only foal registrations and mare inspections. At the last site in Prince Edward Island there were foal
registrations, mare inspections and two mares did their mare performance test. The judges at this site
were Inga Hamilton and Ursula Hosking.
In total during the inspection tour there were 83 foals registered, 36 mares were inspected and 22 mares
did the mare performance test.
More information is available on the Hanoverian Society website at: www.canadianhanoverians.com or
on our Facebook pages.
Canadian Hanoverian Society Announces Winners of the Annual Fritz Floto Awards
The Fritz Floto Award is given annually to the top jumper bred mare and top dressage bred mare
completing their Mare Performance Test. To qualify the mares have to do their test at three to five years
of age. The award is a beautiful pewter plate engraved with the owner’s name and the winning mare.
This year there were three mare performance test sites. At Parkwood Stables near Guelph, Ontario there
th
th
were 10 mares who did the test on September 4 , followed by 7 mares doing the test on September 12
th
at South Lane Farm near Vankleek Hill, Ontario and three mares who did the test on September 12 at
Spruce Meadows, Calgary, Alberta.
The clear winner of the best mare performance test by a dressage bred mare was Bellarina (Belissimo
M/Sherlock Holmes). This four year old mare was also the winner of the mare show at South Lane Farm.
The breeders and owners are Joe and Louise Palmer.
The winner of the best mare performance test by a jumper bred mare was Argentina (Avagon/Foxhunter)
at Spruce Meadows. This three year old mare was bred and owned by George von Platen.
An honourable mention goes to the mare Cornelia (Cornet Obolensky/Foxhunter) who had the second
highest score by the narrowest of margins. Her free jumping scores were 9.5/10. This mare is bred and
owned by Christian Poshung.
Jumper Breeding Program Update
This year we had three mares doing their Mare Performance Test who had free jumping scores and the
required pedigree who have been accepted into the Jumper Breeding Program.
Han.Pr.C. Cornelia (Cornet Obolensky/Foxhunter) free jumping scores 9.0/9.5 bred and owned by
Christian Poschung.
Argentina (Avagon/Foxhunter) free jumping scores 7.5/9.0 bred and owned by George von Platen.
Grafina (Graf Top/Foxhunter) free jumping scores 7.0/9.0) bred by Albert Kley and owned by Mr. and Mrs.
R. D. Southern.
In the United States the following three mares have been accepted into the Jumper Breeding Program
with the highest free jumping score in North America this year being a 9.0/10.0 awarded to a Balou du
Rouet/Coconut Grove xx mare bred and owned by Rick Toering.
Also accepted into the Jumper Breeding program based on successful competition is the stallion Quidam
Blue (Quidam’s Rubin/Come On) owned by Gerrit and Ute Brinkmann, Equitop Farm New Norway,
Alberta.
2014 Sire Breeding Analysis by Michael Boyd
The Verband was asked to forward a list of the foal registration papers that were issued for 2014
(abfohlmeldung). We received a list of 92 mares that had been bred and foaled in 2014. I believe there
were probably more like 120-130 foals in total that we will register in Canada this year, but this was the
list that the Verband had in September.
The following is an analysis of the sires of these foals:
% of total
Hanoverian sires in Canada
68%
Hanoverian sires in the U.S.
4%
Celle State Stud sires
12%
Other European sires
16%
I believe these statistics highlight two trends. First, with the growing number of high quality stallions
standing in Canada owned by CHS members, the number of breedings to these sires predominates and
in fact, have grown in number. Second, the Celle State Stud sires were not used as much as in past
years but the number of other European sires (mainly privately owned) has been growing.
Information for ordering frozen semen from the Celle National State Stud
The Canadian Hanoverian Society is the exclusive distributor in Canada for frozen semen available for
export by the Celle National State Stud (Landgestüt Celle).
This year we will be starting our ordering cycle a month earlier and not wait for the new list that Celle
posts about mid January (2015). On the following list are the stallions that may be ordered. Any stallion
on this list may be ordered and we require that your order form and payment be received by December
20, 2014. After this date orders can only be filled from stallions in our inventory. These stallions are
marked with an * on the list. The ordering information and an updated list of stallions in inventory can be
found on the Canadian Hanoverian Society website: www.canadianhanoverians.com after January 1,
2015.
An insemination dose for most of the stallions on the list is 3, 4 or 8 pipettes (straws) that are .5ml each.
Every order is filled with the exact number of straws per breeding dose as shipped from Celle.
Information on many (but not all) of these stallions is available on the State Stud website at:
www.landgestuetcelle.ce.
Semen in our inventory is available at any time. Semen from the stallions not on the list should arrive in
Canada and be cleared by CFIA by mid March, 2015 and then available.
th
The semen will be in storage with Dr. Claire Plante DVM. Her address is: 7666 – 8 Line, Nichol
Township, Guelph, Ontario N1H 6J2, tel (519) 820-3999. The shipping charge per dose pays for all the
costs to get your semen order into storage at Dr. Plante’s facility and for one shipment out of her facility.
The only additional charges to be billed by Dr. Plante will be if there is more than one shipment out or if
shipment is requested with less than 48 hours’ notice in which case an extra charge of $150 will apply.
As well, if Dr. Plante has to charge a dry shipper she will bill an extra fee of $40.
Payment may be made by VISA or MasterCard, cheque, bank draft or money order. Cheques, bank
draft, or money orders should be made payable to: Canadian Hanoverian Society for the total amount
of your order and should be sent to:

News from Club Members:
from Eastern Club member Ferdi Haupt:
A Tribute to States Premium Mare Wilma: Wilma has, in time, become like family to us at Bennville. We
think very highly of her, and she has proven her worth time and time again in her top notch offspring. She
is by the stallion Waikiki, out of a Grand Royale/ Wendelin dam. She was born in Germany, and originally
purchased as a three year old from her breeder Horst Lacue. She was successful right from the start, as
she was shown the same year here in Canada at the Canadian Hanoverian Breeder's Club Show and
was awarded Champion Mare. The judge that year, Dr. Schade, commended her as being one of the best
horses he had seen at the mare shows that year, not just in Canada, but in Germany as well.
Wilma is now 13 years old, and in the past number of years has established herself as our best
broodmare. Her first three fillies, all by His Highness, were all awarded their States Premium Candidacy
as three year olds. The two oldest of these are now successful riding horses for their new owners, while
the youngest was Reserve Champion mare this past September at the Canadian Hanoverian Breeder's
Society show, and is now in foal to Londontime. Wilma now has another amazing colt at foot by Damsey,
who would, if he was in Germany, for sure be a Stallion Candidate.
Success with Young Mare Suzie Q: A testament to the quality young show horses that Hanoverians
can make, the Elite Mare Candidate Suzie Q had a successful show season this past summer. Bred by
Ferdinand Haupt, she is by Scolari, out of the St. Pr. Mare Lotta by Londonderry. She completed her
performance test this past September, and received the highest marks for the dressage oriented mares;
7.5 trot, 8 walk, 8 canter, 7.5 rideability from the judges, and 8.5 rideability from the test rider. Her quality
gaits and rideability were further proven as she completed the five year old young horse classes, and was
awarded Champion FEI 5 year old at the Ontario Dressage Championships, ridden by Greta Haupt.
