MATCH PRESS KIT
Match background
FC Schalke 04 welcome back a familiar face in Hamit Altıntop when Galatasaray AŞ visit Gelsenkirchen for the second
leg of the clubs' UEFA Champions League round of 16 tie.
• Hamit Altıntop spent four seasons with Schalke, his home-town club, while team-mates Hakan Balta, Engin Baytar,
Ceyhun Gülselam and Furkan Özçal were also born in Germany.
• Both clubs have cause for confidence, with Schalke unbeaten at home in this season's UEFA Champions League
and Galatasaray looking to complete a hat-trick of away victories in the competition. The Bundesliga club hold an
away-goals advantage following the 1-1 first-leg draw in Istanbul.
Match background
• Schalke have lost just twice in 16 home games in UEFA competition since the start of 2010/11, winning 11 of them.
• Victorious in their last two group stage away fixtures, at CFR 1907 Cluj and SC Braga, Galatasaray's UEFA Champions
League record on their travels since September 2008 is W9 D6 L2.
• Schalke have a 100% home record against Turkish opponents. Martin Max's goal earned them a 1-0 victory over
Trabzonspor AŞ in the 1996/97 UEFA Cup second round, a campaign that ended with them lifting the trophy.
• Hamit Altıntop was in the Schalke side that overcame Fenerbahçe SK 2-0 in Gelsenkirchen in the 2005/06 UEFA
Champions League group stage through goals from Kevin Kuranyi and Ebbe Sand.
• Galatasaray have won more games away to Bundesliga opposition than they have done at home. Their record in
Germany reads W4 D4 L5.
• On the last occasion Galatasaray visited Germany they drew 1-1 at Hamburger SV in the first leg of a 2008/09 UEFA
Cup round of 16 tie that they eventually lost 4-3 on aggregate. Their last away victory against Bundesliga opposition
came at Hertha BSC Berlin in the 2008/09 UEFA Cup group stage, the recently departed Milan Baroš scoring the
only goal from the penalty spot.
• Galatasaray overcame 1. FC Magdeburg, the first German side they faced, on the toss of a coin after three 1-1
draws in the preliminary round of the 1964/65 European Cup Winners' Cup.
• Schalke reached the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals in 2010/11, when they were semi-finalists, and in
2007/08. Their only other run to the last eight was back in 1958/59.
• The German club have won eight of the ten UEFA competition ties in which they have drawn the first leg away,
although both defeats – against FC Shakhtar Donetsk in the 2004/05 UEFA Cup round of 32 (0-1 home) and Wisła
Kraków in the 2002/03 UEFA Cup third round (1-4 home) – came after 1-1 draws. Schalke have won two other ties
when they have drawn 1-1 away first, however.
• Galatasaray are hoping to reach the European Cup quarter-finals for the first time since 2001 and fifth time overall.
• Ominously for the Turkish champions, they have won only one of the nine European ties in which they have been
held at home in the first leg, defeating OFK Beograd 5-1 in the second instalment of the 2010/11 UEFA Europa League
third qualifying round after a 2-2 draw in Istanbul. Even then they lost on away goals to FC Karpaty Lviv in the next
round, drawing 2-2 at home and 1-1 away. They have recorded four 1-1 home first-leg draws and lost every tie.
• Schalke's shoot-out record in UEFA club competitions is:
4-1 v FC Porto, 2007/08 UEFA Champions League round of 16
1-3 v Brøndby IF, 2003/04 UEFA Cup second round
4-5 v SK Slavia Praha, 1998/99 UEFA Cup first round
4-1 v FC Internazionale Milano, 1996/97 UEFA Cup final
• Galatasaray's shoot-out record is:
4-1 v Arsenal FC, 1999/2000 UEFA Cup final
Team ties
• As a Turkish international, Fatih Terim appeared in five matches against Germany, losing four of them, beginning
with a 5-0 home friendly defeat in 1975. The only exception was a 0-0 home draw in April 1979 in UEFA European
Championship qualifying. He also appeared against East Germany in 1978 FIFA World Cup qualifying, Turkey posting
a home defeat and an away draw.
• In his first spell as Galatasaray coach Terim lost home and away to Borussia Dortmund in the 1997/98 UEFA
Champions League group stage. His team fared better against Bundesliga opponents in 1999/2000. In that season's

UEFA Champions League they drew 2-2 at home to Hertha BSC Berlin and then beat them 4-1 away to secure third
place in their group and entry into the UEFA Cup, where they defeated Dortmund in the fourth round – winning 2-0
away for an identical aggregate success – en route to lifting the trophy.
• As Turkey coach Terim lost out to Christoph Metzelder's Germany in the UEFA EURO 2008 semi-finals. Hamit
Altıntop, Hakan Balta, Sabri Sarıoğlu and Gökhan Zan all featured as Turkey went down 3-2 in Basel.
• Hamit Altıntop was born in Gelsenkirchen and played for Schalke between 2003 and 2007, making 113 league
appearances and scoring eight goals before moving on to FC Bayern München.
• Of Galatasaray's other German-born contingent, Hakan Balta started his professional career in Hertha's reserve
team and Engin Baytar did likewise at DSC Arminia Bielefeld while Ceyhun came through the youth ranks at SpVgg
Unterhaching, spending two seasons in their first team between 2006 and 2008.
• Didier Drogba scored Chelsea FC's equalising goal and then converted the winning penalty when they overcame
FC Bayern München in last May's UEFA Champions League final. Drogba has struck five goals in nine appearances
against Bundesliga opposition, including one in Chelsea's 2-0 home win against Schalke in the 2007/08 group stage.
He also appeared in the 0-0 return draw in Gelsenkirchen.
• Wesley Sneijder was in the FC Internazionale Milano side deposed as European champions by Schalke in the
2010/11 quarter-finals, losing 5-2 at home and 2-1 in Gelsenkirchen. Sneijder had helped Inter beat Bayern in the
2010 final. Sneijder and Huntelaar, a half-time substitute, were in the Netherlands side beaten 2-1 by Germany in the
UEFA EURO 2012 group stage.
• Benedikt Höwedes appeared as a substitute in Germany's 3-1 win at the Ali Sami Yen Spor Kompleksi in UEFA
EURO 2012 qualifying. Sabri, Hamit Altıntop, Hakan Balta, Umut Bulut, Selçuk İnan and Burak Yılmaz all played for
Turkey, Hakan Balta scoring the hosts' goal.
• Höwedes also came off the bench when Germany beat Fernando Muslera's Uruguay 2-1 in a May 2011 friendly.
• Christian Fuchs faced Turkey's Galatasaray contingent in an Austria side beaten 2-0 in Istanbul in UEFA EURO
2012 qualifying and held 0-0 at home.
• Ciprian Marica played in Romania's 1-0 victory over Turkey in FIFA World Cup qualifying in Istanbul in October 2012.
Hamit Altıntop, Semih Kaya, Emre Çolak and Umut were on the losing team.
• Teemu Pukki scored in Finland's 3-2 friendly win against Turkey last May. Burak hit both Turkey goals in a match
also featuring Hamit Altıntop, Umut, Semih Kaya and Yekta Kurtuluş.
• Klaas-Jan Huntelaar struck the 52nd-minute winner when a Netherlands side including Ibrahim Afellay overcame
Turkey 1-0 in a November 2010 friendly. Hamit Altıntop, Umut, Selçuk İnan, Burak and Sabri started for Turkey with
Engin Baytar and Yekta appearing as substitutes.
• Johan Elmander scored Sweden's third goal when they wiped out a four-goal deficit to draw 4-4 with Germany in a
World Cup qualifier in Berlin in October.
• Nordin Amrabat and Afellay were team-mates at PSV Eindhoven between 2008 and 2011. Afellay appeared in PSV's
2-0 home defeat of Galatasaray in the 2006/07 UEFA Champions League group stage.
• Jefferson Farfán was in that PSV side and also featured when they won 2-1 in Istanbul in that same campaign.
Farfán faced Galatasaray's rivals Fenerbahçe SK four times during his PSV career, losing on both visits to Istanbul
but scoring in a 2-0 home success in the 2005/06 group stage.
• Tranquillo Barnetta helped Bayer 04 Leverkusen eliminate Galatasaray 5-1 on aggregate in the 2007/08 UEFA Cup
round of 32, but was also in the Switzerland side eliminated from UEFA EURO 2008 on home soil after a 2-1 defeat
by Turkey.
• Joel Matip and Dany Nounkeu have played together for Cameroon.

Head coach
FC Schalke 04: Jens Keller
Date of birth: 24 November 1970
Nationality: German
Playing career: VfL Wangen, VfB Stuttgart (twice), TSV 1860 München, VfL Wolfsburg, 1. FC Köln, Eintracht Frankfurt
Coaching career: VfB Stuttgart (youth), VfB Stuttgart, FC Schalke 04 (youth), FC Schalke 04
• Having risen through Stuttgart's youth department, Keller made his first and only Bundesliga appearance in 1990
before leaving for third-tier 1860 München, where he helped the club to win promotion to the second and then first
divisions.
• A fringe player in the Bundesliga, he moved to second division Wolfsburg and again won promotion, subsequently
becoming a top-flight regular and earning a return to Stuttgart, where he played in the 1998/99 UEFA Cup.
• Joined Köln in 2000 but relegated two years later, prompting a switch to Eintracht, whom he helped into the Bundesliga
only to miss most of the season with cartilage damage; relegation and further injury problems led to retirement in
2005.
• Took over Stuttgart's Under-19 side in 2008/09 and became Christian Gross's assistant with the first team in December
2009; the following October, replaced Gross as head coach but lasted only two months before making way for Bruno
Labbadia, although Keller continued to work for the club as a scout.
• Appointed Schalke's U17 coach in summer 2012, on 16 December that year he stepped up to the senior side following
Huub Stevens' departure.
Galatasaray AŞ: Fatih Terim
Date of birth: 4 September 1953
Nationality: Turkish
Playing career: Adana Demirspor, Galatasaray AŞ
Coaching career: MKE Ankaragücü, Göztepe AŞ, Turkey Under-21, Turkey (twice), Galatasaray AŞ (three times),
ACF Fiorentina, AC Milan
• A central defender, Terim played for Galatasaray for over a decade and represented Turkey 51 times, 31 of them
as captain. He started his coaching career with MKE Ankaragücü and then Göztepe, before he was named assistant
to national team boss Sepp Piontek and put in charge of the Under-21s in 1991.
• Appointed Turkey coach in 1993 and led them to EURO '96. They lost all of their games in England, but just getting
to the final tournament, Turkey's first since the 1954 FIFA World Cup, was a major landmark.
• After EURO '96 he returned to Galatasaray, winning four league titles and the 2000 UEFA Cup. Serie A came calling
and Terim took charge of Fiorentina and Milan before returning to Galatasaray, but problems behind the scenes
brought about a temporary retirement in 2004.
• Reappointed by Turkey in 2005 following a break from management, Terim – known as 'Imparator' (The Emperor)
for his leadership skills – could not guide the team through a 2006 FIFA World Cup play-off against Switzerland.
Success followed at UEFA EURO 2008, however, with Terim leading Ay Yıldızlılar (The Crescent-Stars) to the
semi-finals, but he resigned following his side's unsuccessful bid to reach the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
• Returned for a third spell in charge of Galatasaray in May 2011 and in his first season back steered Cimbom to their
first Süper Lig crown in four years.

• Jonas Eriksson started out as a referee in 1994, making his top-flight debut in his native Sweden six years later and
first appearing in UEFA competition as the fourth official in the UEFA Cup first round second leg between FK Crvena
zvezda and FC Arsenal Kyiv in September 2001.
• The following summer he took charge of three games at the UEFA European Under-17 Championship and was
fourth official as Switzerland beat France in the final.
• A former sales director who became a full-time referee at the start of 2011, Eriksson's star continued to rise as he
earned his FIFA badge in 2002 and featured at the 2003 UEFA-CAF Meridian Cup, subsequently making regular
appearances across UEFA competitions as a fourth official.
• Eriksson, who lists music and travelling among his hobbies and is based in Sigtuna, oversaw three games at the
2006 UEFA European Under-19 Championship and took charge of two UEFA EURO 2008 qualifiers.
• Made his UEFA Champions League group stage debut as a referee in December 2008 for the matchday six meeting
between Real Madrid CF and FC Zenit St. Petersburg, one of three games he oversaw in that season's competition.
Has since become a regular in that and the UEFA Europa League, also overseeing three qualifiers in both the 2010
FIFA World Cup and UEFA EURO 2012, and in the middle for two group matches at the latter tournament.

Competition facts
UEFA Champions League knockout stage: Did you know?
• Teams have recovered from a first-leg deficit to go through on 28 occasions, including SL Benfica, APOEL FC, FC
Bayern München and Chelsea FC in 2011/12. Only twice – AFC Ajax's defeat of Panathinaikos FC in the 1995/96
semi-finals and FC Internazionale Milano's win against FC Bayern München in the 2010/11 round of 16 – has a side
progressed after a home first-leg loss.
• The biggest losing margin a side has overturned was achieved by RC Deportivo La Coruña in the 2003/04 quarter-finals
when they lost 4-1 at AC Milan but won 4-0 at home.
• Twenty-one ties have been decided on away goals, including six where the triumphant team lost the first leg.
• In all, 21 ties have required extra time. Eight have been decided by extra time alone: four quarter-finals, three round
of 16 encounters and the 2007/08 semi-final between Chelsea FC and Liverpool FC.
• Thirteen ties have gone to penalties, including six finals – 1996, 2001, 2003, 2005, 2008 and 2012. The first two-legged
tie decided on spot kicks was PSV Eindhoven's 4-2 win against Lyon on 13 April 2005 after a 2-2 aggregate draw.
• There has never been a knockout tie ending goalless after two legs. Ten have finished 1-0 on aggregate, most
recently Tottenham Hotspur FC's narrow victory against AC Milan in the 2010/11 round of 16.
• FC Bayern München hold the record for the biggest first-leg lead with a 5-0 success at Sporting Clube de Portugal
in the 2008/09 round of 16, eventually going through 12-1 after a 7-1 home victory in the second leg. Those two games
also featured more goals (13) over its two legs than any UEFA Champions League knockout tie.
• FC Bayern München's 7-0 second-leg defeat of FC Basel 1893 in the 2011/12 round of 16 is the largest margin of
victory in a UEFA Champions League knockout match.
• Clarence Seedorf is the only player to win the European Cup with three clubs (AFC Ajax 1995, Real Madrid CF
1998, AC Milan 2003, 2007). Liverpool's Bob Paisley (1977, 1978, 1981) is the only coach to win three times.
• Ottmar Hitzfeld (Borussia Dortmund 1997, Bayern 2001), Ernst Happel (Feyenoord 1970, Hamburger SV 1983) and
José Mourinho (FC Porto 2004, FC Internazionale Milano 2010) are the only coaches to win the trophy with two clubs.
• Chelsea FC have become the first defending champions to fail to get through a group stage since the UEFA
Champions League began. (This record, like the others, includes the seasons between 1999/2000 and 2002/03 that
featured a second group stage). In 1992/93, FC Barcelona were the reigning European Champion Clubs' Cup holders
and lost 4-3 on aggregate in the second round by PFC CSKA Moskva.
• No team has successfully defended the UEFA Champions League trophy with AC Milan (1989, 1990) the last club
to win consecutive European Champion Clubs' Cups. Milan (1994, 1995), AFC Ajax (1995, 1996), Juventus (1996,
1997) and Manchester United (2008, 2009) have all returned to the final as holders only to lose.
• Only two teams have ever won the UEFA Champions League on home soil: Borussia Dortmund (1997, final in
Munich) and Juventus (1996, final in Rome), while Manchester United lost the 2011 final in London and 12 months
later Bayern were beaten in the showpiece in their own stadium, the Fußball Arena München.
UEFA Champions League: Did you know?
• Lionel Messi became the first player to score five goals in a match in FC Barcelona's 7-1 win against Bayer 04
Leverkusen on 7 March 2012. Eight players, including Messi, have scored four times in a game, most recently FC
Bayern München's Mario Gomez on matchday eight last season.
• S.S. Lazio goalkeeper Marco Ballotta is the oldest player to compete having been aged 43 years 252 days when
he featured against Real Madrid CF on matchday six of the 2007/08 edition.
• Ryan Giggs is the oldest player to score in the competition, aged 37 years and 289 days, in Manchester United's
1-1 draw at SL Benfica on 14 September 2011.
• Celestine Babayaro is the youngest player to have appeared. He was 16 years and 87 days when he started for
RSC Anderlecht against FC Steaua Bucureşti on 23 November 1994. He was sent off in the 37th minute.
• Peter Ofori-Quaye is the youngest player to have scored, aged 17 years and 195 days, in Olympiacos FC's 5-1
defeat at Rosenborg BK on 1 October 1997.
