Bundan 60 yıl önce, 1955 yılının Haziran ayında, Conrad
Hilton, İkinci Dünya Savaşı sonrası Avrupa’da genişleme
planının bir parçası olarak, Amerika kıtası dışında amacına uygun olarak inşa edilmiş ilk modern otel olan Hilton
İstanbul’un kapılarını açarken, dünyayı İstanbul’la, İstanbul’u da dünyayla buluşturacağını söylemişti. Gerçekten
de dünya İstanbul’a geldi; işletmesinin ilk yılında Hilton
İstanbul sayesinde Türkiye’ye gelen yabancı turist sayısında yüzde 60 artış sağlandı.
60 years ago, in June 1955, when Conrad Hilton opened
the doors of Hilton Istanbul as the first modern hotel built outside the American continent as part of the plan to
expand in Europe in the aftermath of the Second World
War, he said the hotel would bring the world to İstanbul
while bringing İstanbul to the world. Indeed, the world
came to İstanbul; in its first year, Hilton Istanbul created
a 60 percent increase in the number of foreign tourists
coming to Turkey.
Geçen yıllar içinde Hilton ve Türkiye arasında özel bir
bağ oluştu, bunun neticesinde de faaliyetlerimiz yurt
çapında ciddi bir gelişme ve büyüme gösterdi. Türkiye,
bugün Hilton’un en önde gelen uluslararası gelişme pazarlarından biri sayılıyor.
Through the years, a special bond formed between Hilton and Turkey, as a result of which our activities here
underwent considerable development and growth. Today,
Turkey is considered as one of the primary international
growth markets for Hilton.
Kariyerim boyunca Hilton Worldwide’ın uluslararası düzeyde gerçekleştirdiği müthiş büyümenin tanığı oldum.
Düşünüyorum da, Conrad Hilton 1925’te Teksas’ta kurduğu ve 1955’te İstanbul’la birlikte denizaşırı büyümeye
başlattığı şirketinin, günümüzün en etkileyici küresel
markalarından birine dönüştüğünü görebilseydi acaba ne
hissederdi?
Throughout my career, I witnessed the spectacular
growth of Hilton Worldwide carried out on an international scale. I wonder – if Conrad Hilton could have seen
that the company he founded in Texas in 1925 and began its overseas growth with İstanbul in 1955 turned into
one of the most impressive global brands of our day, what
would he have felt?
Bu ikonik otelin 60 yıllık mirasını değerlendirirken, başarıyı getiren faktörlere de bu noktada değinmek doğru
olacaktır. Dünyanın en tanınmış markalarından biri olmak ve sadece İstanbul’da değil, muhtemelen dünyadaki
en iyi lokasyonlardan birine sahip olmak bize elbette çok
büyük bir avantaj sağlamıştır. Fakat daha da önemlisi,
Hilton İstanbul, nesiller boyunca İstanbulluların önemli
davetlerine ve başlıca yerel ve uluslararası etkinliklere ev
sahipliği yaparak, kent yaşamında ve cemiyet hayatında
derin izler bırakmıştır.

In evaluating this iconic hotel’s legacy of 60 years, it is
necessary to mention the factors that made it so successful. Being one of the best known brands of the world and
having one of the best locations not only in İstanbul but
probably also in the world undoubtedly gave us a great
advantage. But more importantly, Hilton Istanbul left an
indelible mark in urban and social life by hosting the important receptions of Istanbulites for generations as well
as major local and international events.
I would like to thank all our main stakeholders who have
lent us their support for 60 years.

Burada, tarihin en kutsal addedilmiş tapınaklarının gölgesinde bulunmak paha biçilemez bir deneyim. Kendimi
de onlardan biri olarak saydığım ortalama bir Amerikalı için güzel Boğaz’ın metropolünün bahsi bile binlerce
kaynaktan edinilmiş şaşırtıcı izlenimler uyandırmaktadır.
Emimin ki bazılarınız, Londra ve Chicago için aynı şeyleri
hissediyordur, ama hiçbiri bu ünlü antik kentin büyüsüyle
boy ölçüşemez.
İstanbul’un insanlık tarihinde oynadığı önemli rol tesadüf
sonucu değildir. Büyük tarihsel olaylara tanıklık etmek, iki
büyük kıtanın kavşak noktasında kurulmuş olan bu şehrin
kaderinde başından beri vardı. Burada Kiros ve Serhas’ın
Persli kavimleri Atina, Sparta ve Tebai’nin site devletleriyle karşılaşmışlardı. Neredeyse yüz yıl sonra İmparator
Konstantin, başkentini bu müthiş mevki üzerine kurmuş,
birkaç yüzyıl sonra da aynı şehir Batı dünyasının çoğunun
hukukuna, Jüstinyen Kanunları’yla kaynaklık etmişti.
Ortaçağlarda, Amerika’nın adı bile duyulmamışken,
bu şehir işgalci Haçlılara, Cenevizli ve Venedikli tüccar
prenslerin kalyonlarına tanıklık etti.
İngiliz tarihçi Gibbon’un, Fatih Sultan Mehmet’in başarılı
kuşatmasını anlatan kitabının heyecan verici sayfalarını
da hâlâ hatırlıyorum.
Bayanlar baylar, “3” sayısının İstanbul’un kronolojisindeki
önemi dikkatimi çekiyor. Konstantinopolis 330’da burada
kuruldu ve Osmanlı İmparatorluğu 1453’te yine burada
merkezi bir devlet haline geldi. 1923’teyse, müteveffa ve
büyük Mustafa Kemal Atatürk’ün yönetiminde bugünkü
Türkiye Cumhuriyeti kuruldu.

Batı dünyası için 1923’teki dönüşümler büyük önem taşıyordu. Osmanlı imparatorluk rejimi ilk zamanlardaki
Standing here today in the shadow of a score of history’s
most hallowed shrines is indeed a precious experience.
To the average American –and I consider myself suchmere mention of the metropolis of the beautiful Bosphorus invokes a maze of impressions gathered from a thousand sources. I am sure some of you must feel the same
way about London or Chicago, although neither of these
can ever hope to match the magic of this famed city of
antiquity.
That İstanbul has played a large role in human history is
certainly no accident. Pitched on the very crossroads of
two great continents, it was destined from the beginning
to be the witness of great historical happenings. Here the
Persian hordes of Cyrus and Xerxes made their moves
against the City-States of Athens and Sparta and Thebes.
Almost a hundred years later Constantine built his capital
on this splendid site, and a few centuries later it was this
same city which mothered the laws for most of the Western World in the great Justinian codes.
In the Middle Ages, when America was still unheard of,
this city witnessed the invading crusaders and the galleys
of the commercial princes of Genoa and Venice.
And I still recall the exciting pages of Gibbon, the English
historian, where he describes the successful siege of the
city by Mehmet II, The Conqueror.
Ladies and gentlemen, it strikes me that the number “3”
has been significant in the chronology of İstanbul. Constantine built in 330, the Ottoman Empire was centralized here in 1453. And in 1923, under your late and great
Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the present Republic of Turkey
was founded.

canlılığını kaybetmişti ve yaygın olarak “Avrupa’nın hasta
adamı” şeklinde anılıyordu. Ardından 1923 geldi; sonrasındaysa bunu Mustafa Kemal Atatürk ve bu gizli enerjinin diriltilmesi izledi; bugünse Türkiye, milletler ailesinin
önemli bir üyesidir.
Türkiye’nin totaliter taktiklere karşı kararlı direnişi Amerika’nın saygısını ve desteğini sağladı. 1947 Truman Doktrini’nden başlayan ve Eisenhower’ın şimdiki başkanlığıyla devam eden süreçte bizim tutumumuz da hep istekli bir
biçimde devam etti. 1952’de Kuzey Atlantik Paktı Türkiye’yi sıcak bir şekilde karşıladı.
Böylece Türkiye, Batı ile Doğu arasındaki ilişkilerin pekiştirilmesinde gitgide artan bir öneme sahip oldu. Türkiye’nin Yunanistan, Yugoslavya ve bizzat kendisinin de arasında olduğu karşılıklı anlayışı 1953’teki başarılı Ankara
Antlaşması’nı sağlamaktaki hayati rolü Özgür Dünya’nın
takdirini kazanmıştır.
Türk liderliği her geçen gün büyümektedir. Türkiye’nin
Batılı güçlerle ve Güneydoğu Avrupa’yla güçlü ilişkilerini
sağlamlaştırmak için son otuz iki yılda yaptıkları, olumlu
liderliğinin bir kanıtıdır. Aynı zamanda Türkiye, Batı ile
eski Osmanlı İmparatorluğu’nun sahip olduğu diğer geniş
alanları arasında bir halka, köprüdür.
Bir işadamı olarak, eğer bu muhteşem oteli hiçbir maddi kazanç düşünmeksizin, yalnızca idealist bir girişim
olarak size sunmaya kalksaydım basit görünürdüm. Yaratacağı iyi niyet etkisini inkâr etmek de bir o kadar yanıltıcı olur. Samimi olarak diyebilirim ki, yürürlükteki
genişleme programımızdan da anlaşılacağı üzere, Hilton
International kendini, Amerikan girişim sistemi içerisinde sunduğumuz hizmetin en iyisini diğer ülkelere doğru
genişleterek, halklar arasındaki karşılıklı anlayışı artırma
konusunda bir araç olarak görmektedir. Başka yerlerde olduğu gibi burada da ulusal hükümetin kendisi, özel olarak
Emekli Sandığı’nı devreye sokarak bu amacı gerçekleştirmek için olağanüstü bir çabayla bizimle yan yana çalıştı.

For the Western World, the transforming events of 1923
have been of supreme importance. The old, Imperial Ottoman Regime had lost its earlier vitality, and was commonly referred to as “the sick man of Europe.” Then came
1923; then came Mustafa Kemal Atatürk and revitalization of that latent energy; and today, Turkey is an important member of the family of nations.
Turkey’s determined resistance to totalitarian tactics won
the respect and assistance of America. Our response, beginning with the Truman Doctrine of 1947 and continuing with Eisenhower’s present administration, has been
continuously enthusiastic. The North Atlantic Treaty Organization welcomed Turkey in 1952.
Thus, more and more, Turkey has assumed increasing importance in the cementing of relations between the West
and the East. Her vital role in harmonizing understanding between Greece, Yugoslavia and the Turkish Republic
itself with the successful Ankara Pact of 1953 won the applause of the entire Free World.
Turkish leadership grows in stature every day. What it has
done, in the past thirty-two years, to strengthen powerful
ties with Southeastern Europe and the Western powers
is proof positive of Turkish leadership. At the same time,
Turkey is the link… the bridge… between the West and
the other vast areas of the old Ottoman Empire.
As a business man, I would be simple indeed, were I to
attempt to portray this splendid hotel as merely an idealistic operation with no thought for financial return.
At the same time, to deny any concern for its goodwill
impact would be equally misleading. Frankly, as can be
seen in our current expansion program, Hilton Hotels
International views itself as a medium for bettering the
understanding between peoples by extending the best we
have to offer in the American Enterprise System to other
lands. Here, as elsewhere, the national government itself,
operating specifically through its pension fund, has magnificently worked side by side with us to achieve that goal.

bir taahhüdü olması amacıyla tasarlandı. Puerto Rico’da
açılan yeni otelimizden edindiğimiz deneyimin ardından
1953’te Madrid’de açılan Castellana Hilton’la Avrupa’ya
geçtik. Son iki yılda, bir dizi başka yer için de görüşmelerimiz oldu.
The initiation of our International Hotel program took
place in 1948 and was intended as a pledge of private
American enterprise to complement the confidence already manifested on the governmental level in the Truman plan. Following our experience with the new hotel
in Puerto Rico, we moved over to Europe in 1953 with
our Castellana Hilton in Madrid. In the past two years we
have negotiated for a series of others.
İstanbul’daki bu otelimizin yanı sıra, liste önümüzdeki yıllarda Roma, Berlin, Kahire, Havana, Mexico City, Londra,
Paris, Stockholm ve başka metropolleri de içerecektir. Bu
genişlemenin amacı salt büyük olmak için “büyüklük” değildir. Bugünkü açılışla birlikte Hilton ailesine yirmi dokuzuncu otel eklendi ve hali hazırda dünyadaki en büyük
otel grubunu yönetiyoruz. Yalnız büyüklüğün ötesinde,
uluslararası otel zincirimizi, birçok ülkeden iyi niyet temsilcisi insanların barışın dilini konuştukları dostluk merkezleri olarak görüyoruz.
The list, aside from our hotel here in your city of İstanbul,
will eventually include Rome, Berlin, Cairo, Havana,
Mexico City, London, Paris, Stockholm and other metropolitan centers. The purpose of this expansion is not
“bigness” for its own sake. We already operate the largest hotel group in the world with today’s opening making the twenty-ninth hotel in the Hilton family. Beyond
mere size, we view our International Hotel ties as friendly
centers where men of many nations and of goodwill may
speak the language of peace.
Bu oteller aynı zamanda -bizi içtenlikle karşılayan ve aralarına alan insanlar için değil ama Komünist dünyanın
savunuculuğunu yaptığı hayat tarzına karşı bir meydan
okumadır. Her bir otel, arkadaşlarını kölelere indirgemek
isteyenler için yabancı bir kavram olan milletlerarası dostluğu ön plana çıkarır. Bu tarz düşünce ve yaşam biçimiyle

We mean these hotels too as a challenge-not to the peoples who have so cordially welcomed us into their midstbut to the way of life preached by the Communist world.
Each hotel spells out friendship between nations, which is
an alien word to those who try to reduce friends to slaves.

But, ladies and gentlemen, this is not the time for serious discussion. Rather it is a week of festival-one which
we shall long remember as marking an unofficial, and for
that reason, a deeper bond between the people of Turkey
and those of my native America.

A Brave Entrepreneur: Conrad Hilton
Hilton Otelleri’nin öyküsü, 1919 yılında Teksas’ta başladı. Conrad Hilton’un Cisco kentinde satın aldığı 40 odalı Mobley Oteli, günümüzde 6 kıtada 97 ülkeye yayılan
ve 4,400 otelden oluşan dev bir zincirin ilk halkası oldu.
Dünya, Hilton adını taşıyan ilk otelle 1925 yılında tanıştı. Bu tarihten itibaren Hilton Otelleri, Conrad Hilton’un
girişimci zekâsı ve vizyoner kişiliğinin bir eseri olarak,
dünyayı ilklerle ve öncü uygulamalarla tanıştırmaya başladı. Hilton’un sektördeki öncülüğü öylesine güçlüydü ki,
zamanla Hilton adı “otel” kelimesiyle eşanlamlı kullanılmaya başladı.
Konuk odalarına televizyon konulmasından genel
mekânlarda klima kullanımına kadar, bugünün olmazsa
olmaz birçok uygulamasının öncüsü Hilton oldu. Cesur
girişim hamleleri ve yenilikçiliğiyle öne çıkan Conrad
Hilton, 1949 ve 1963 yıllarında iki kez Time dergisinin
kapağında da yer aldı. Time, onun için şu başlığı uygun
görmüştü: “Anahtar Adam!”
The story of Hilton Hotels began in Texas in 1919. The
40-room Mobley Hotel that Conrad Hilton bought in
Cisco formed the first ring of the giant chain of more than
4400 hotels in 97 countries on six continents. The world
first heard of a Hilton hotel in 1925. From then on, Hilton
Hotels introduced to the world many firsts and innovations, the work of the enterprising mind and visionary
personality of Conrad Hilton. So powerful was Hilton’s
leadership in the industry that in time, the name “Hilton”
became synonymous with the word “hotel.”
Hilton was the pioneer of many features of hotels we take
for granted today, such as TV sets in guest rooms and
air conditioning in common areas. Conrad Hilton was
known for his bold business moves and innovativeness,
appearing twice on the cover of Time magazine in 1949
and 1963. “The Key Man!” was Time’s caption for Hilton.

En uygunu İstanbul
İstanbul is the best fit
1950’li yıllara gelindiğinde, Conrad Hilton için tek bir amaç
vardı: Amerika kıtasının dışına çıkarak Hilton’un kapılarını
Avrupa’ya açmak... İkinci Dünya Savaşı’nın ardından yeniden toparlanma süreci içerisindeki Avrupa’ya yakın konumuyla İstanbul, değerinin yeniden keşfedilmesini bekleyen,
geleceği parlak kentlerden biriydi.
İstanbul’da ayrıntılı gözlemler yapan Hilton Hotels International Başkan Yardımcısı W. Houser, şehrin sunduğu bu potansiyeli görmüştü. Coğrafi konumu, kültürel dokusu, tarihi
geçmişi ve turistlerin yoğun ilgisi, Hilton konforunu dünyanın bu köşesine taşımak için İstanbul’u en uygun aday haline
getiriyordu. Bu nedenle Conrad Hilton ve Houser, yanlarına ünlü mimarlar Louis Skidmore ve William Brown’u da
alarak, Türkiye’yi de kapsayan bir Avrupa turuna çıktılar. Bu
gezi sırasında Avrupa’da yatırım olanaklarını yerinde değerlendiren Conrad Hilton, ABD’ye dönüşünde dünya kamuoyuna yeni otellerin yer seçimi konusundaki kararını açıkladı:

İmparatorluklara başkentlik yapmış, olağanüstü bir tarihi
mirasa sahip bir kent olmasına karşın İstanbul, bu yıllarda
modern konaklama imkânları açısından son derece yetersiz
bir kentti. The New York Times gazetesine göre 1950’lerin başında şehirde, Amerikalı ve Avrupalı turistlere hitap edebilecek sadece 3 otel bulunuyordu. İstanbul gibi dünya turizminin merkezi olmaya aday bir kentin, uluslararası standartlara
uygun oda sayısı ise sadece 290’dı. Kısaca, Avrupa’ya açılmayı planlayan Hilton’un İstanbul’a, İstanbul’un da Hilton’a ihtiyacı vardı. Grubun, kentteki konaklama kapasitesini bir anda
iki katına çıkaracak ve rakipsiz özellikleriyle fark yaratacak
olan Hilton İstanbul’dan beklentileri yüksekti. Hilton İstanbul, Porto Riko ve İspanya’dan sonra, Hilton’un ABD dışında
açtığı üçüncü otel olacaktı. Madrid’deki otel açıldıktan kısa
bir süre sonra el değiştirdi. Bununla beraber Hilton İstanbul,
denizaşırı ülkeler arasındaki en eski Hilton oldu.
By 1950, Conrad Hilton had a singular goal: going beyond
America and opening Hilton’s doors to Europe… İstanbul
was close to Europe, which was going through reconstruction after World War II, and was one of the cities with a
bright future, waiting to be rediscovered.
W. Houser, the vice president of Hilton International, came
to İstanbul for detailed observations, and realized the potential offered by the city. Its geographical location, cultural fabric, historical past, and its popularity among tourists made
İstanbul the best candidate to present the comfort of Hilton
in this part of the world. Thus, Conrad Hilton and Houser
took Louis Skidmore and William Brown, two famous architects, and went on a European tour that included Turkey,
during which Conrad Hilton evaluated investment possibilities in Europe on location. Upon his return to the US,
Conrad Hilton announced to the world his decision regarding the locations of the new hotels: Rome and İstanbul…
İstanbul had been the capital to empires, and had an extraordinary historical heritage, but in those years seriously
lacked modern accommodation facilities. In a review that
appeared in The New York Times, there were only three hotels in the early 1950s that were suitable for American and
European tourists. And although İstanbul was a candidate
for becoming the center of global tourism, the number of
rooms complying with international standards was only
290. In short, Hilton needed İstanbul in its quest to expand
in Europe, and İstanbul needed Hilton. The group had high
expectations of Hilton Istanbul, which would double the accommodation capacity in one stroke and create a significant
difference with its unmatched aspects. Following Puerto
Rico and Spain, Hilton Istanbul would be the third Hilton
hotel abroad. Shortly after its opening, the hotel in Madrid
has changed hands. Therewith, Hilton Istanbul became the
oldest Hilton in overseas countries.

Hilton Oteli’nin kuruluşuna dair sözleşme 9 Ağustos
1951 günü, Türk Dışişleri Bakanlığı ile Hilton Hotels International arasında imzalandı. Türk hükümetinin tam
desteğine sahip olan proje, Başbakan Adnan Menderes
tarafından yakından takip ediliyordu. Ona göre Hilton
İstanbul, hem Türkiye ile Amerika arasında filizlenmeye
başlayan dostluk bağlarını güçlendirecek, hem de modernliğin, prestijin, gelişmenin ve Türkiye’nin dünyaya
açılmasının bir simgesi olacaktı.
The Turkish Foreign Ministry and Hilton Hotels International signed an agreement on August 9, 1951 regarding the establishment of the Hilton Hotel. Fully backed
by the Turkish government, the project was closely overseen by Prime Minister Adnan Menderes, who believed
that Hilton Istanbul would strengthen the newly budding
ties of friendship between Turkey and the US, and would
become the symbol of modernity, prestige, development,
and Turkey’s opening up to the world.

ve ticaret elçisi olarak gördüğü Hilton Oteli’nin İstanbul’da kurulacak olmasını güçlü bir şekilde destekliyordu.

topraklarla modern dünyayı birbirine bağlayan bir kentte, Avrupa ve Asya’nın birbirine dokunduğu bir noktada
inşa edilen Hilton İstanbul, bir bakıma Türkiye ile Batı

Similarly, the US government strongly supported the establishment of a Hilton Hotel in İstanbul, regarding it as a
cultural and commercial envoy. Built in a city which connected the modern world with the lands that had been
the cradle of the world’s oldest civilizations, at a point
where Europe touched Asia, Hilton Istanbul would in a
sense be the concrete proof of the alliance between Turkey and the Western world, and the point of intersection
and reconciliation between these two worlds.

Bir anıt yükseliyor
A monument rises
Hilton İstanbul’un tasarımını, dönemin dünyaca ünlü
mimarlık ofislerinden Skidmore, Owings & Merrill
(SOM) ile ödüllü Türk mimar Sedat Hakkı Eldem birlikte
gerçekleştirmişlerdi. Eldem, SOM’un modern tasarımını
yerel motiflerle zenginleştirerek, modernizm ile Türk mimarisinin sentezinden oluşan etkileyici bir eserin ortaya
çıkmasını sağlamıştı. Ünlü mimar, o günlerde yaptığı bir
açıklamada, otelin içinde ve dışında, hatta mobilyasına varıncaya kadar bütün detaylarda mahalli karaktere
önem verildiğini belirtiyordu. Bina gibi, otelde kullanılacak sofra ve çay takımları, menüler ve görevlilerin giyeceği kıyafetler bile İstanbul ve Türk karakterine uygun
şekilde tasarlanmıştı.
Hilton, o döneme kadar İstanbul’da inşa edilmiş en yüksek binaydı. Yapı, tüm İstanbulluların meraklı bakışları
altında, hızla yükseldi. Şantiyede zaman zaman 500 işçi
aynı anda çalışıyordu. İstanbul’da, o dönemde temelleri
yıllarca önce atılmış olduğu halde bir türlü tamamlanamayan Opera, İstanbul Üniversitesi ve Adliye Sarayı gibi
binalar halen tamamlanmayı beklerken, Hilton’un inanılmaz bir hızla yükselmesi, ilgiyi daha da artırıyordu.
Hilton İstanbul, 1950’li yıllar için rekor sayılabilecek bir

Hilton Istanbul was designed by Skidmore, Owings &
Merrill (SOM), one of the world-famous architecture offices of the period and the award-winning Turkish architect Sedat Hakkı Eldem. The latter had enriched SOM’s
modern design with local motifs, creating an impressive
work that was the synthesis of modernism and Turkish
architecture. In a statement, the famous architect emphasized that local character had been sought in all details
on the inside and outside of the hotel, including the furniture. Besides the building, even the tableware, tea settings, menus, and the uniforms of the personnel had been
designed to reflect Turkish character and İstanbul.
At the time, Hilton was the highest building in İstanbul.
Construction proceeded rapidly under the curious gaze
of Istanbulites. At times, 500 workers could be seen working together at the construction site. The Opera, as well as
Istanbul University and the Palace of Justice were some of
the buildings whose foundations had been laid years ago
and were waiting to be completed, while Hilton rose at
a record rate, which piqued people’s interest even more.
Hilton Istanbul was completed in 21 months, a veritable
record for the 1950s, and rose like a monument at one of
the finest locations of İstanbul.

İstanbul’da inşası hızla ilerleyen Hilton Oteli tüm ihtişamıyla kentin siluetindeki yerini alırken, Anadolu’nun
dört bir köşesindeki dokuma tezgâhlarından yükselen
tıkırtılarda da sıra dışı bir artış dikkatleri çekiyordu. Hilton’un parlak mermerleri üzerine serilecek halıların el
tezgâhlarında dokunmasına karar verildiğinden, Anadolu’da yüzlerce üretici seferber edilmiş ve bu kadar çok halıyı dokuyabilmek için yeni tezgâhlar kurulmuştu. Hilton
İstanbul, yıllardır büyük ihmale uğramış el halıcılığına
büyük bir canlılık kazandırmıştı.
Sade dış tasarımıyla modern bir görünüm sergileyen otelin iç mimarisine de göz alıcı bir zarafet hâkimdi. Geniş
camlarından dolan ışıkla aydınlanan ferah iç mekânları,
duvarlarını süsleyen tabloları, çini kaplamaları, Bedri
Rahmi’nin panoları ve el dokuması halılarıyla bir otelden
çok ihtişamlı bir sanat galerisini andıran Hilton İstanbul,
aynen halı dokumacılığında olduğu gibi, unutulmaya yüz
tutmuş çini sanatına da yeni bir nefes getirmişti.
Hilton İstanbul’un sanatla yakın ilişkisi bununla sınırlı
kalmayacak ve 2015 yılında Veranda Bar ve Terrace Restoran’ın Rıfat Özbek’in imzasını taşıyan yastıklarla dekore
edilmesi gibi, ünlü isimlerin bıraktığı izler her dönemde
oteldeki varlığını sürdürecekti.
As the construction of Hilton Istanbul rapidly continued
and the hotel assumed its place in the city’s silhouette with
all its splendor, an extraordinary increase could be observed in the output of looms throughout Anatolia. Following the decision to cover Hilton’s shiny marble floors
with carpets woven at hand looms, hundreds of workers
all over Anatolia had been placed under contract and new
looms had been set up to weave such a large number of
carpets. Hilton Istanbul thus made a significant contribution to the rejuvenation of the long-neglected industry of
hand-woven carpets.
The hotel featured a simple yet modern exterior design,
and a stunningly graceful style dominated the interior.
Spacious interiors flooded with natural light from big
windows, paintings decorating the walls, tile coverings,
panels by Bedri Rahmi, and hand-woven carpets made
Hilton Istanbul look more like a magnificent art gallery
than a hotel. Just as in carpet weaving, Hilton Istanbul
had given tile manufacturing a new lease on life.
Hilton Istanbul’s close involvement with the arts would
not be limited to this, and the contributions of major artists would continue their existence at all periods, such as
the pillows designed by Rıfat Özbek that decorate the veranda since 2015.

Conrad Hilton’un yeni oteline gösterdiği özen, açılmasına
günler kala, Hilton İstanbul’un “Conrad’ın Sarayı” olarak
ünlenmesini sağlamıştı. Emsallerinden her yönüyle farklı
olan Hilton İstanbul, Doğu Avrupa ve Ortadoğu’nun en
büyük oteliydi. Eşsiz Boğaz manzarasına hâkim bir noktada yer alan otel, sahip olduğu manzarayı gölgelemekten
kaçınan bir sadeliğe sahipti. İç mekânı ve dış mimarisiyle
yalın bir zarafet içerisinde, şatafattan uzak bir eser olan
Hilton İstanbul, görenlerin ilgisini ve hayranlığını kendi
üzerine çekmiyor, tam tersine sunduğu müthiş manzaranın tadını çıkarmalarını sağlıyordu.
Otelin, Avrupa’daki büyük otellerden farklı olarak, her
odasında balkonu ve özel banyosu bulunuyordu. Oysa
bu özellik, 1950’li yıllarda sadece büyük otellerin delüks
süitlerinde mevcuttu. Musluklarından 24 saat sıcak suyun yanı sıra buzla soğutulmuş soğuk su da akan Hilton
İstanbul, tüm bu özellikleriyle yakın coğrafyada eşi olmayan bir oteldi.
Otele geniş yer ayıran saygın mimarlık dergisi Architectural Record, Hilton İstanbul’u, görkemli bir turist oteli ile bir
sarayın otel versiyonunun karışımı olarak tanımlıyordu.
Days before the opening, Hilton Istanbul came to be
known as “Conrad’s Palace” because of the special attention it received from Conrad Hilton. The biggest hotel in
Eastern Europe and the Middle East, Hilton Istanbul was
different from its peers in every way. With its subdued
design, the hotel accentuated the matchless view of the
Bosphorus it commanded. The simple grace of its interior
and exterior design made Hilton Istanbul a work of modesty, standing back to direct attention and admiration
away from itself towards the amazing view it afforded.
Unlike the big hotels in Europe, every room at Hilton Istanbul had its own balcony and private bathroom, a feature that was present only in the deluxe suites of grand
hotels in the 1950s. Hot water was available 24 hours a
day along with cold water cooled with ice. All these made
Hilton Istanbul a peerless hotel in the region.
Architectural Record, a respected architectural magazine,
covered Hilton Istanbul extensively, describing it as the
mix of a splendid touristic hotel and the hotel version of
a palace.

Yıldız yağmuru
Star-studded opening
Avrupa’da ilk otelini 1953’te Madrid’de açan Conrad Hilton, çok önem verdiği Hilton İstanbul’un açılışının da
en az o kadar görkemli olmasını istiyordu. Bu nedenle
kutlamalar, 10-15 Haziran tarihleri arasında, kelimenin
tam anlamıyla 5 gün 5 gece sürecek şekilde planlanmıştı.
Açılışa, gazetelere “Hollywood İstanbul’da” manşetini attıracak kadar çok Hollywood ünlüsü davet edilmişti. Birçok gazete, dünyaca ünlü yıldızları takip etmek üzere özel
muhabirler görevlendirmişti.
10 Haziran 1955’te İstanbul, tarihi günlerinden birini yaşadı. O gün kente adeta yıldız yağmuru yağdı. Dünyaca
ünlü sinema yıldızları, modacılar, modeller, gazeteciler ve
işadamları, Hilton’un açılış kutlaması için İstanbul’daydı.
Conrad Hilton’un şahsi davetlisi olan 106 konuğu İstanbul’a, “Uçan Halı” ve “Sihirli Halı” adlarında iki özel uçak
getirmişti. Gelen isimler arasında Olivia de Havilland,

Ünlüler geçidini anımsatan kafile, motosikletli polislerin eşliğinde Hilton’a ulaştığında, görevliler 45 dakika
boyunca odalara 1.200 valiz taşıdılar. Bu durum, otelde
yaşanacak şıklık yarışının da habercisiydi. Elbette İstanbul sosyetesinin güzide isimleri de davetliler arasındaydı.
Otelin resmi açılışı 10 Haziran günü, Hilton geleneklerine uygun olarak altın anahtarla yapıldı. O gece, dillere
destan bir balo düzenlendi. Ertesi günkü gazetelerin “Şahane!”, “Muhteşem!” gibi sıfatlarla tarif edecekleri gecenin en çok alkışlanan sözü ise, İstanbul Valisi Fahrettin
Kerim Gökay’a aitti:
“Bugün Türkiye’nin ayı ve güneşi ile Amerika’nın yıldızları
bir arada bulunuyor; eski dünya yeni dünyayı kucaklıyor.”
In 1953, Conrad Hilton had opened his first hotel in Europe
in Madrid, and wanted the ceremony in İstanbul to be at
least as magnificent. The celebrations were planned to last a
full five days between June 10 and 15. So many Hollywood
stars had been invited that papers announced the opening
with headlines that read “Hollywood comes to İstanbul.”
Many of the papers had sent special reporters for the event.
June 10, 1955 was a historical day for İstanbul. The city
overflowed with stars, not to be repeated for many years to
come. Movie stars, fashion celebrities, models, journalists,
and businessmen had flooded İstanbul for the celebrations
at Hilton. Conrad Hilton’s personal guests flew to İstanbul
on two private planes called “The Flying Carpet” and “The
Magic Carpet”. A total of 106 guests arrived on these two
planes, including Hollywood stars such as Olivia de Havilland, Ann Miller, Terry Moore, Sonja Henie, Diana Lynn,
and Merle Oberon, as well as representatives of renowned
newspapers and magazines.
The convoy of celebrities reached Hilton escorted by police motorcycles, where bellboys carried 1,200 suitcases to
the rooms in 45 minutes. The number of suitcases was an
indication that the hotel was soon to turn into a catwalk.
The Turkish jet set from İstanbul, Ankara, and İzmir were
naturally among the invited guests.
The official opening ceremony of the hotel was held on
June 10, with Conrad Hilton using his golden key to open
the door of the hotel, a Hilton tradition. The opening night
ball was legendary. The next day’s papers would call the
night “Wonderful!” and “Glamorous!” and the quote of
the night was from Fahrettin Kerim Gökay, Governor of
İstanbul:
“Today, the crescent and the sun of Turkey meets the stars
of America; the old world is embracing the new world.”

Paparazzinin doğuşu
The birth of paparazzi
Hilton’un açılışının ertesi günü herkesin dilinde aynı soru
vardı: “Milliyet’i gördün mü?” Gazetenin baskısı sabah
erken saatlerde tükenmiş, meraklıları semt semt dolaşıp
gazetenin peşine düşmüştü. Görenler görmeyenlere anlatıyor, duyanlar bire bin katarak başka kulaklara fısıldıyordu. “Gazetede...”
Tüm bu fiskosun nedeni, usta foto muhabiri İlhan Demirel’in, Terry Moore ile Hilton’daki odasında yaptığı röportaj sırasında “kazayla” yakaladığı bir pozdu. Dönemin
en beğenilen aktrislerinden Terry Moore, Halit Kıvanç’ın
deyimiyle “eteğinin azizliğine uğramış”, verdiği “frikik”
ile adeta bir atom bombası etkisi yaratmıştı.
Bu olay, bol yıldızlı baloyla birlikte, Türkiye gazeteciliğine
“paparazzi” kavramını kazandıran ilk örneklerden biriydi. Gerçekten de Hilton’un ünlü konuklarını yakından
takip etmek ve onların “özel anlarını” yakalamak amacıyla gazeteler tarafından sayısız muhabir görevlendirilmiş,
ünlü yıldızlar bir gazeteci ordusu tarafından adeta yakın
markaja alınmıştı. İşte Terry Moore’un “frikikli fotoğrafı”,
o gayretlerin bir sonucuydu.
Fotoğrafını gazetede gören Terry Moore ise tam anlamıyla çıldırmıştı. Neyse ki araya bazı “hatırlı” kişilerin girmesiyle fotoğrafın negatifi Moore’un odasında yakılınca,
iş tatlıya bağlanmıştı. Terry Moore kadar, bazı hayranları
da bu olaya öylesine içerlemişlerdi ki, işi İlhan Demirel’i
düelloya davet edecek kadar ileri götürmüşlerdi.

Yine de bu olay Hilton İstanbul’un açılışını gölgede bırakmamış, beş gün boyunca gazetelerde ve ajans haberlerinde geniş yer bulmuştu. İstanbul’daki hayat ancak, 15 Haziran’da Conrad Hilton ve beraberindekilerin Türkiye’den
ayrılmasıyla normale dönebilmişti.
Everybody asked the same question the day after Hilton
opened: “Did you see Milliyet?” The morning copies of the
newspaper had been sold out, and those who could not overcome their curiosity went from neighborhood to neighborhood in search of a copy. Those who had seen it told about
it to those who hadn’t, and those who had heard about it
whispered it to others along with rich embellishments. “In
the paper…”
All this gossiping was caused by an “accidental” instant İlhan
Demirel, the experienced photo-journalist, had caught during his interview with Terry Moore at her Hilton room.
Moore was one of the most admired actresses of the period, and the “free kick” she had given, which Halit Kıvanç
described as “the treachery of her skirt,” had the effect of a
bombshell on readers.
This incident marked one of the first incidents of “paparazzi reporting” in Turkish journalism, along with the
star-studded ball. Indeed, countless reporters had been on
duty at the ball to cover the famous guests at Hilton and
to capture their “special moments,” and stars were closely
marked by an army of reporters. Terry Moore’s “free kick”
photograph was the result of their hard work.
When Moore saw her photograph in the paper, she went
mad. Fortunately, some individuals with “clout” intervened,
and after the negatives of the photograph were burned in
Moore’s room, the star was placated. Her fans were just as
upset as she was, and some went so far as to invite İlhan
Demirel to a duel.
This incident did not cast too long a shadow on the opening
night of Hilton Istanbul, and the celebrations were widely
reported by papers and radio reports for five days. Life in
İstanbul went back to normal only after Conrad Hilton and
his entourage left Turkey on June 15.

“Planet Hilton”
Hilton İstanbul’u, “1950’li yılların tam göbeğine inen
bir uzay gemisi”ne, hatta bir “gezegen”e benzeten duayen
gazeteci Tevfik Yener, otelin açılışını siyasette, sanatta,
toplum yaşantısında ve eğlence dünyasında yeni başlangıçların yaşandığı bir dönemin en önemli dönüm noktalarından biri olarak nitelendirir. Yener, Hilton efsanesinin o günlerde yarattığı etkiyi, İstanbul Aşk Ekmek Hayal
(2010) adlı kitabında şöyle dile getirir:
1955’te açılan Hilton Oteli, Türkiye’de bir dönemin başlangıcıdır.
İlk yabancı büyük yatırımdı. İlk beş yıldızlı oteldi.
Türkiye’nin en büyük otelleri yine İstanbul’daydı ama
böylesi yoktu.

Otel açılınca İstanbul sosyetesinde bir heyecan başladı. Hiltonlu olmak. Barında içmek, lobisinde beş çayı ile müzik dinlemek, Şadırvan gibi müzikli lokantalarında yemek ve roof’unda dans etmek. Tamamen yabancı orkestralar eşliğinde…
Hilton’da kalmak ise ayrı bir “büyüklüktü”. Ne demek Hilton’da oda tutup gecelemek…
Çünkü öyle rivayet ederlerdi ki “Hilton’da bir gecelik oda
parasına Boğaz’da ev alırsın.” Palavra elbette…
Hilton Oteli, İstanbul’a ayrı bir hava getirmişti. Yirminci
yüzyılın ortasında, binlerce yıllık tarihi kentin göbeğinde
bizleri “çağımıza uyandırma kutusu” gibiydi.
Tevfik Yener, the doyen of journalists, compared Hilton
Istanbul to “a spaceship that landed smack in the middle
of the 1950s” and even to “a planet”, and regarded the
opening of the hotel as one of the most important turning points of a period during which new beginnings unfolded in politics, the arts, social life, and the entertainment world. In İstanbul Aşk Ekmek Hayal (“İstanbul Love
Bread Dream,” 2010) Yener describes the effect created by
the Hilton myth:
Opened in 1955, Hilton Istanbul was the beginning of a
new era.
It was the first big foreign investment. It was the first fivestar hotel.
Turkey’s biggest hotels were in İstanbul, but none was like this.
…
Once the hotel was opened, İstanbul’s high society was
aflutter. They wanted to be a part of Hilton. To have a drink
at the bar, listen to music during five o’clock tea, have dinner at its restaurants like the Şadırvan, and to dance on
the roof. To the accompaniment of only foreign orchestras…
Staying at Hilton was a sign of class all onto itself. Renting
a room and spending the night at Hilton – the idea blew
people’s minds…
Because it was said that “With the money for a night at
Hilton, you can buy a house on the Bosphorus.” Which was
baloney, of course…
The Hilton Hotel brought İstanbul a fresh air. It was like a
“wake up call” to the new age in the middle of the twentieth
century, in the center of a city with a history that spanned
thousands of years.

It’s a privilege to stay there and to work there
Hilton İstanbul’da 1955-1961 yılları arasında çalışan
Hayk Madoyan’a göre, ilk açıldığı dönemde otelde yaklaşık 500 personel istihdam edilmişti. O yıllarda otelcilik
alanında yetişmiş eleman bulmak çok güç olduğundan,
Hilton İstanbul, kendi personelini kendi yetiştirme yoluna gitmişti. Hilton’da çalışma fikri o kadar cazipti ki, 500
kişilik kadro için belki bunun 5-6 katı başvuru olmuştu.
According to Hayk Madoyan, who worked at Hilton Istanbul
between 1955 and 1961, the hotel had around 500 personnel in
its first years. Back then, it was very difficult to find personnel
trained in hotel management, and Hilton Istanbul had to train its
own. Working for Hilton Istanbul was such an attractive idea that
the number of applications for the opening of 500 personnel had
probably been five or six times that figure.
Yönetim tarafından çalışanların seçimine çok önem verilmişti. Örneğin ön büro personelinin çoğunluğu, daha
önce Dışişleri Bakanlığı’nda yurtdışı tecrübesi edinmiş
elemanlardan oluşmuştu. Aynı şekilde, yiyecek-içecek
kısmındaki birçok kişi, Deniz Yolları’nın Ankara ve İstanbul gibi turistik gemilerinde çalışma tecrübesi olan, servis
ve lisan bilen kişiler arasından seçilmişti. Hatta aralarında, daha önce kaptanlık yapmış bir kişi dahi vardı.
The management was very careful about selecting the new employees. For example, most of those who would work at the front
desk were selected from among those applicants who had foreign
experience in the Foreign Ministry. Similarly, many of those hired
to work in the food and beverage section spoke a foreign language
and had service experience on the touristic ships of the Turkish
Maritime Lines like Ankara and İstanbul. One of them was even
a former captain.
Hilton İstanbul’da kalmak kadar, çalışmak da bir ayrıcalıktı. Bu durum, personelin işine dört elle sarılmasını sağlar, onları hep daha iyisini yapmaya teşvik ederdi. Kentin
sosyal hayatına yepyeni bir hava getiren Hilton’un önemli
bir yönü de, bir nevi “otelcilik üniversitesi” olarak sektöre
bilinçli ve beceri sahibi insanlar yetiştirmesiydi. Hilton
İstanbul, yabancı personel için de bir sıçrama noktasıydı.
Madoyan’a göre Hilton İstanbul’un “tezgâhından” geçen
birçok kişi, daha sonra değişik ülkelerde bu mesleğin
öncüleri olmuşlardı. Hayk Madoyan, çalışanlarla ilgili şu
hoş anıyı paylaşıyor:
Açılıştan bir süre sonra resepsiyonda çalışırken tedirgin biri
bana yaklaştı: “Affedersiniz, bir hemşerimin burada çalıştığını duydum. Adı İsmail Kuşçu. Bulmama yardım eder
misiniz?” dedi. “Tamam,” dedim, “İsmail Kuşçu Bey, room
service’te çalışıyor.” Adam bir anda şaşırdı, sonra tatlı bir
Temel şivesiyle, “İsmail Rum filan değildir. Benim gibi Karadenizlidir,” dedi.
Working at Hilton Istanbul was a privilege just like staying there.
This meant that all personnel worked conscientiously, always trying to improve themselves. Another important aspect of Hilton,
which had brought fresh air to the social life of the city, was that
it trained a new generation of highly qualified and hard-working
individuals for the industry, acting like a hotel management college.” Hilton Istanbul was also a stepping stone for foreign personnel. According to Madoyan, many individuals “trained” at Hilton Istanbul later became pioneers of their profession in various
countries. Hayk Madoyan shares this pleasant memory about the
personnel:
Some time after the opening, someone approached me uneasily as
I was working at the reception desk. “Excuse me,” he said, “I heard
that someone from my home town is working here. His name is
İsmail Kuşçu. Could you help me find him?” I said, “Sure. İsmail
works in room service.” The man was at first surprised to hear
that, but then said, in a sweet Black Sea accent, “İsmail is not Rum
[Greek]. He is from the Black Sea region just like myself.

“özel” bir görevi vardı: Şıklığın ve modanın mabedi haline gelen Hilton’da, dünyanın en ünlü modacılarından
Carven’in defilesinde teşhir edilecek kürkleri ve kıyafetleri
korumak!
On November 30, 1955, the police at Hilton Istanbul had
a very “special” mission: to protect the furs and dresses
at the fashion show by Carven, one of the most famous
fashion designers of the world, to be held at Hilton, the
new center of style and fashion!
Fransız modacının üç gün süren defilesine ilgi o kadar
yoğundu ki, otel o günlerde mahşeri bir kalabalığa sahne
oldu. Aynı izdiham, Carven’den sadece birkaç ay sonra
yine Hilton’u seçen Christian Dior’un defilesinde de yaşandı. Hilton, daha ilk günden, şıklığın ve güzelliğin şehirdeki adresi olacağını tescil etmişti.
The three-day show by the French designer was met with
such interest that the hotel was fully packed throughout
the event. A similar crowd was there for Christian Dior’s
show a few months later, again at Hilton. From the get go,
Hilton had confirmed its place as the venue for style and
beauty in the city.

Bir Türk modacı tarafından Hilton’un lobisinde habersizce

The shows by world-famous designers such as Christian
Dior, Pierre Cardin, and Carven were followed by the
shows by Vakko, one of the leaders of Turkish fashion.
Another unannounced fashion show held at Hilton’s lobby by a Turkish designer was also an original experience
for Istanbulites. The lobby show was followed by events
such as “bar show” and “five o’clock show,” all of which
would become part of the Hilton culture.
Konuklarının her zaman şıklık yarışı içinde oldukları
Hilton, 60 yıl boyunca kentteki moda gösterilerinin ve
güzellik yarışmalarının değişmez adresi oldu. Otelin müdavimlerinden modacı Vural Gökçaylı’ya göre Hilton’daki
bir defileye davet edilmek birçok insan için heyecan, davet
edilmemek ise üzüntü kaynağıydı.
Hosting guests that competed in terms of elegance, the
hotel remained the destination for fashion shows and
beauty pageants in the city for 60 years. According to
Vural Gökçaylı, a fashion designer and one of the regulars
of the hotel, being invited to a fashion show at Hilton was
a source of excitement for many people, while not receiving an invitation was cause for dejection.

Kongre turizminin temelleri atılıyor
The foundations of convention tourism
Hilton’un açılmasına aylar kala gazetelerde yayımlanan
bir haber, İstanbul’da kongre düzenlemenin ne kadar
meşakkatli bir iş olduğunu ortaya koyuyordu. Kentte
düzenlenecek 9. Uluslararası Para Kongresi’ne tüm dünyadan bin kişinin katılması bekleniyordu ama, hiç kimse
İstanbul’da üç gün boyunca bu bin kişiyi nerede misafir
edeceğini bilemiyordu. Organizasyon komitesi, içinde
bulunduğu çaresizliği, “İstanbul’da otel sıkıntısı malum
derttir. Biz, her şeyde titiz davranan bu insanları memnun edecek oteli nerede bulacağımızı bilemiyoruz,” sözleriyle dile getiriyordu.
Bu büyük soruna ilaç olacak çare, birkaç ay içinde açılacak olan Hilton İstanbul’du. Gerçekten de İstanbul, ilk
kez Hilton sayesinde büyük toplantı ve kongrelere ev sahipliği yapabileceği bir mekâna kavuştu. Nitekim otelin
açılışından hemen sonra organizasyonlar birbirini izlemeye başladı.
Months before Hilton’s opening, a news article in the
papers demonstrated how difficult it was to organize a
convention in İstanbul. The 9th International Money
Congress was expected to draw a thousand people from
all over the world, but no one knew where these would
be accommodated in İstanbul for three days. The organization committee described its hopelessness as follows:
“İstanbul’s shortage of hotels is well known. We are at a
loss at finding a hotel that would please these people who
are hard to please.”
The solution to this grave problem proved to be Hilton
Istanbul, which was scheduled to open in a few months’
time. İstanbul had its first venue that could host large
conventions and congresses with Hilton. And right after
the hotel opened, various organizations were held one after another.
Hilton İstanbul’da düzenlenen ilk uluslararası toplantı,
30 Ağustos 1955’te 27 ülkeden delegelerin katıldığı Dünya Hemşireler Kongresi’ydi. Onu, ABD’nin Doğu Akdeniz’de görevli subaylarının katıldığı bir diğer toplantı
ve 30 ülkeden havacılık sektörü temsilcilerinin katıldığı
Uluslararası Havacılık Kongresi izledi.
The first international meeting held at Hilton Istanbul
was the Worldwide Nursing Congress, held on August 30,
1955 with delegates from 27 countries. This was followed
by another meeting attended by US officers deployed in
the East Mediterranean, and the International Aviation
Congress attended by representatives of the aviation industry from 30 countries.
Hilton İstanbul, ilk kez 1970’lerde adını duyurmaya başlayan “kongre turizmi” kavramının Türkiye’deki ilk temsilcilerinden biriydi.
Hilton Istanbul was one of the first venues in Turkey to
embrace the concept of “congress tourism,” which would
become popular in the 1970s.

Bir kahvenin kırk yıl hatırı var
“A cup of coffee is remembered for forty years”
O gün Hilton’un mutfağında özel bir konuk için pişirilen
kahvenin daha sonra bir Hilton geleneği haline geleceğini
kim tahmin edebilirdi ki? Kendisine kahve ve likör sunulan o konuk, Conrad Hilton’dan başkası değildi.
Who would have guessed that the coffee prepared in Hilton’s kitchen for a special guest would turn into a Hilton
tradition? That guest who was served coffee and liqueur
was none other than Conrad Hilton himself.
Otelin açılışı için İstanbul’da bulunduğu sırada Conrad
Hilton’a, kahvenin Türk geleneğinde kırk yıl hatırı olduğu
ve özellikle bayramlarda kahvenin yanında likör ikram
edildiği anlatılmıştı. Bundan çok hoşlanan Conrad Hilton, geniş otelcilik deneyimiyle bu geleneği derhal müşteri memnuniyetine yönelik bir uygulamaya dönüştürmüş
ve yeni gelen konuklara “Hoş Geldiniz Kahvesi” ile “Hoş
Geldiniz Kokteyli” sunulmasını istemişti.
While Conrad Hilton was in İstanbul for the opening, he
was told that coffee was a highly valued tradition in Turkey and that it was served with liqueur especially during
holidays. Conrad Hilton liked that very much, and with
the acumen of an experienced hotelier h turned this tradition into a customer satisfaction tool – from then on,
new guests would be served “Welcome Coffee” and “Welcome Cocktail.”

Yazar, çevirmen ve gazeteci İzzet Sedes, Hilton İstanbul’un açılmasından sadece birkaç ay sonra gazetedeki
sütununda, Hilton’da yemek yerken insanın kendini yabancı bir diyarda zannettiğini, çünkü garsonlar da dahil
olmak üzere, çevredeki herkesin yabancı dilde konuştuğunu yazıyordu. Sedes, “Şayet yabancı lisan bilmiyorsanız vay başınıza gelene!” diye devam ediyordu. “Biz
Türkler bile kapıdan girince ana lisanımızdan başka her

Tabii ki Hilton’un getirdiği yenilikler her kesim tarafından hemen kabul görmemiş, hatta bazıları “eski köye yeni
âdet” olarak nitelendirilmişti. Fakat zaman içerisinde Hilton’un getirdiği standartlar yerleşecek, yaygınlaşacak ve
Hilton, İstanbul’da yeme-içme alanında bir referans noktası olarak kabul görecekti.
Uluslararası organizasyonlarda ya da yabancı devlet başkanlarının Türkiye ziyaretlerinde de çoğu zaman mutfak
Hilton’a emanet edilecekti.
İzzet Sedes, writer-translator-journalist, wrote in his
newspaper column only a few months after Hilton Istanbul was opened that one felt like in a foreign land while
dining at Hilton, because everyone including the waiters
were talking in a foreign language. “If you can’t speak a
foreign language,” Sedes continued, “good luck! When we
walk in, even we Turks try to speak any language other
than our mother tongue, and Turkish is the last language
that occurs to us.”
Hilton Istanbul radically changed accustomed ways in
dining, as it did in hotel management, playing an important role in reshaping the culinary culture in İstanbul.
Hilton introduced its own kitchen, presentation, and service culture, becoming from its first day one of the most
select gourmet stops in İstanbul with its menu and service
quality.
Of course, not all novelties introduced by Hilton were
met with the same approval, and some innovations were
indeed seen as putting new wine in old bottles. Over time,
however, Hilton’s standards took hold, and the hotel became a pint of reference regarding food and beverage in
İstanbul.
On the occasion of international organizations or visits
by foreign heads of state, the kitchen operations would
usually be entrusted to Hilton.

As one of the cornerstones of Turkish tourism, Hilton Istanbul was a hotel of firsts and records in its 60 years, attaining
hard-to-believe statistics.
Hilton İstanbul inşa edildiğinde, İstanbul’un en yüksek
binası ve Türkiye’nin ilk 5 yıldızlı oteliydi. İnşasında ilk
kez köpüklü tuğla kullanılmıştı. Müşterilere ücretsiz sunulan Hilton İstanbul Magazine, kendi türündeki ilk örnekti. Otomatik telefon santralı ve kart anahtar sistemi
Türkiye’de ilk kez Hilton’da kullanıldı. Aynı şekilde Hilton, dünyada bilgisayarlı sisteme geçilen ilk otellerden biriydi. Televizyonlu odalar ve faks, Hilton’un müşterilerine
sunduğu ilklerdi. Hilton İstanbul’un gerçekleştirdiği bir
diğer ilk ise Türkiye’de bulunan zincir oteller içinde Türk

When Hilton Istanbul was built, it was the tallest building
in İstanbul and Turkey’s first five-star hotel. It was also the
first construction where aerated concrete was used. Free for
guests, the Hilton Istanbul Magazine was the first of its kind.
The automated telephone operator and the keycard system
were used in Turkey for the first time at Hilton. Similarly, Hilton was one of the first hotels in the world to adopt a computerized system. Rooms with television sets and fax machines
were also offered for the first time by Hilton to its guests.
Açıldığı günden bu yana Hilton’da 14,3 milyona yakın
misafir konakladı. Otelin ilk açıldığı yıllarda Türkiye’ye
gelen turist sayısının yılda 150 bin civarında olduğu ve
2000’li yılların başına kadar bu sayının 10 milyonun altında olduğu düşünülürse, Hilton’un Türk turizmine katkısı daha iyi anlaşılabilir. Diğer bir deyişle Hilton İstanbul, dünden bugüne, Belçika, Yunanistan ve Portekiz gibi
ülkelerin nüfusundan daha fazla sayıda konuk ağırladı.

İstanbul’un çehresini değiştiren bir simge oldu ve kentin
sosyal hayatına birçok değişiklik getirdi. “Hilton” kelimesi,
konfor, kalite ve yüksek standartları temsil eden bir sözcük olarak dilimize yerleşti.
Since the day it opened, Hilton has served nearly 14.3 million guests. During the early years, the annual number of
tourists visiting Turkey was around 150 thousand, and that
figure remained below 10 million until the 2000s, which
makes Hilton’s contribution to Turkish tourism all the more
remarkable. Put differently, Hilton Istanbul has served more
guests than the respective populations of Belgium, Greece,
and Portugal.
In those 60 years, 5.8 million tons of meat and 48.2 million
liters of drinks were consumed. Put end to end, the toilet papers used would circle the earth 11 times. The first big weddings, balls, the first round table meeting, the first fairs, fashion shows, and beauty pageants were held here. The first bar
discotheque was opened at Hilton. The first “Happy Hour”
was also offered here.
Hilton Istanbul made invaluable contributions to society, urban life, architecture, and tourism. It became a symbol that
changed the face of İstanbul and introduced many novelties
into the city’s social life. The term “Hilton” became synonymous with comfort, quality, and high standards.

Su Perileri İstanbul’da
Water Fairies come to İstanbul
Hilton’un İstanbullular tarafından merakla beklenen
yüzme havuzu, 22 Haziran 1956 günü, Fransa’dan getirilen Su Perileri’nin hayranlık uyandırıcı gösterisiyle
hizmete girdi.
Otel ilk açıldığında, yüzme havuzunun yerinde, istendiğinde buz pistine dönüştürülebilen büyük bir süs havuzu
bulunuyordu. Ayrıca kaymayı bilmeyenler için özel hocalar görevlendirilmişti. Fakat nedendir bilinmez, İstanbullular buz patenine pek ilgi göstermediler. Bunun üzerine
otel yönetimi, süs havuzunu kaldırıp yerine bir yüzme
havuzu yapmaya karar verdi.

Awaited impatiently, the swimming pool at Hilton was
opened on June 22, 1956, with the awe-inspiring show by
the Water Fairies brought in from France.
When the hotel first opened, a big ornamental pool stood
in the place of the swimming pool, which could be frozen
and converted into a skating rink. Special trainers were
on duty to teach those who didn’t know how to skate. For
some reason, however, Istanbulites did not show much
interest in ice skating, and the management decided to
convert to ornamental pool into a swimming pool.
1956 yaz başında tamamlanan yüzme havuzunun açılışı
çok görkemli oldu. “Su Perileri”nin özel aydınlatma eşliğinde yaptığı gösteri günlerce konuşuldu. Sedat Hakkı
Eldem’in Conrad Hilton’un ayak izi şeklinde tasarladığı
havuz, kentin en büyüğüydü (günümüzde de kent merkezindeki en büyük otel havuzu olma özelliğini korumaktadır). Havuz, dans pisti ve barlarıyla, aynı zamanda bir
parti mekânı olarak da tasarlanmıştı.
The pool was completed in the early summer of 1956,
and the opening was splendid. The show by the “Water
Fairies” and the special lighting used in the show was
the subject of conversation for days. Designed by Sedat
Hakkı Eldem, the pool was in the shape of Conrad Hilton’s footprint. It was the largest of its kind in the city (it
remains the biggest hotel pool in the downtown area),
and had been conceived as a party venue with adjacent
tennis courts, a dance floor, and bars.
Ünlü Hayat dergisi, Hilton’un havuzunu, “kızgın güneşle kavrulan şehrin beton ve asfaltı ortasında renkli bir su
âlemi” olarak tanımlıyordu. Dergiye göre, “Şiddetli sıcakların ortalığı kasıp kavurduğu günlerde, omuz omuza vermiş apartmanların ortasında bunalmış bir halde yürürken
birdenbire bir plajla burun buruna gelmek, insana çölde
giderken vahaya kavuşmanın sevincini ve ferahlığını veriyordu. Bu güzelim serinlik, yalnız içindekiler için bir
nimet değil, onu dışarıdan seyredenler için de bir zevkti.”
The famous Hayat magazine described Hilton’s pool as “a
colorful water world in the midst of the concrete and asphalt of the city parched by the sun.” The magazine maintained that “Suddenly coming across a beach while walking dazedly among buildings leaning against each other
under a scorching sun, one felt the joy of stumbling upon
a refreshing oasis in the desert. This beautiful coolness
was a blessing not only for those who swam in it, but also
for those who watched them from afar.”
Nitekim Hilton’un havuzu, kısa zamanda partilerin, organizasyonların, davetlerin, iş sohbetlerinin ve beş çaylarının merkezi haline gelecek, jet sosyetenin buluşma
noktası olarak basının gündeminden hiç düşmeyecekti.
Hilton’s pool would soon become the focal point of parties, events, receptions, business meetings, and five o’clock
teas, and always remain on the agenda of the media as a
meeting place for the jet set.

The mysterious woman
Açılış günü kapılarını dünyaca ünlü yıldızlarla açan Hilton İstanbul, sonraki yıllarda da sayısız ünlü ismi konuk
etti. Yıldızların mekânı olan Hilton, bu nedenle her dönem magazin basınının da odağında oldu. Dönemin gazeteleri, Hilton’a gelenleri ve orada yaşananları izlemek
üzere özel muhabirler görevlendirdiler. Biraz şansın da
yardımıyla bu muhabirler, önemli röportajlara ve haberlere imza attılar.
After opening its doors with world-famous stars, Hilton
Istanbul continued to host numerous celebrities in following years. Hilton was a home to the stars, and always
commanded the attention of the media. The papers of the
period had special reporters stationed at Hilton to watch
the guests and whatever transpired between them. With a
little luck, these reporters were able to conduct important
interviews and write striking reports.
1958 yılında Yeşilköy’de Paris’ten gelen uçağın merdivenlerinden, siyah gözlüklü ve kürkünün içinde yüzünü
saklamaya çalışan uzun saçlı bir kadın indi. Kadını, havaalanının kapısında Hilton’un siyah Cadillac’ı bekliyordu. Bu durum, genç bir gazete muhabirinin dikkatinden

In 1958, at the Yeşilköy Airport, a woman with long hair
and black glasses came down the stairs of the plane from
Paris, trying to hide her face. Hilton’s black Cadillac was
waiting for her at the entrance, which had caught the attention of a young reporter, who decided to tail the Cadillac. The trip ended in front of Hilton. Just to make sure,
the reporter shouted “Brigitte!” as the woman walked
through the revolving door.

gizemli kadın, ünlü Fransız film yıldızı Brigitte Bardot’tan

The woman turned around in surprise. The reporter had
been right. This mysterious woman was indeed the famous French actress Brigitte Bardot. Her cover blown,
she agreed to pose for the reporter at breakfast, on the
condition that he would not tell any other reporter. Then
she checked in at Hilton Istanbul, where she would stay
only for a day, registering her name as Monique Dumas.

Avrupa Güzellik Kraliçesi’nin seçileceği yarışmaya katılmak üzere İstanbul’a gelen 15 güzeli taşıyan uçak 25
Haziran 1958 günü Yeşilköy Havalimanı’na indiğinde,
foto muhabirlerinin flaşları da yanıp sönmeye başladı.
Uçaktan inen güzellik kraliçesi adaylarını, elinde kırmızı
beyaz karanfillerle Türkiye Güzeli Ezel Olcay karşıladı.
Hepsi birbirinden şık ve alımlı güzeller kendilerini Hilton’a götürecek olan araçlara ilerlerken, meraklı kalabalık
da hayranlık dolu bakışlarla onları izliyordu.
Güzellik kraliçesi adaylarının sonraki günlerde basına yönelik mayolu geçişleri ve kıyafetli balo takdimleri
Hilton’un havuzunda gerçekleştirildi. Havuzun çevresi
renkli fenerlerle süslenmiş, yapma kuğuların yüzdüğü
havuzun üzerine bir de köprü inşa edilmişti. Köprüden
geçen kraliçe adayları, bu masalsı dekorda bir kat daha
güzel görünüyorlardı.
28 Haziran günü Açık Hava Tiyatrosu’nda düzenlenen
yarışmanın tanıtım kokteylleri de Hilton tarafından organize edilmişti. Herkes, yarışmada Türkiye Güzeli Ezel
Olcay’dan çok şey bekliyordu. Ama ne yazık ki birincilik
tacını Avusturya Güzeli taktı; ikinciliği ve üçüncülüğü ise
Alman ve Fransız Güzelleri kazandı.
Hilton, bu tarihten sonra Türkiye’de organize edilen güzellik yarışmalarının birçoğuna ev sahipliği yaptı. Neşe
Erberk, Hülya Avşar, Jülide Ateş ve Pınar Altuğ gibi güzeller, Hilton’da taç takmanın heyecanını yaşayan isimlerdi.
The plane that carried the 15 contestants of the Miss
Europe Competition landed at the Yeşilköy Airport in
İstanbul on June 25, 1958, and the flashes of the photojournalists began to go off. The contestants were met by
Miss Turkey Ezel Olcay, with red and white carnations.
Each beauty was more elegant and attractive than the
next, and as they walked over to the cars that would take
them to Hilton, the crowd watched them admiringly.
The contestants walked wearing swimsuits and evening
dresses for media representatives by Hilton’s pool; lanterns surrounded the pool, and handmade swans swam
in it. A bridge was constructed over it, and the contestants
walking across it looked even more beautiful in this fairytale setting.
Cocktails promoting the event, which was held at the
Open Air Theater on June 28, had also been organized by
Hilton. The public had high hopes regarding Miss Turkey
Ezel Olcay. Unfortunately, however, Miss Austria won the
contest; Miss Germany placed second, and Miss France
placed third.
Hilton hosted most of the beauty pageants held in Turkey after that date. Neşe Erberk, Hülya Avşar, Jülide Ateş,
and Pınar Altuğ were among those beauties who received
their crown at Hilton.

1959 yılının 12 Nisan akşamı Hilton’un Balo Salonu’nu
birbirinden şık hanımlar ve beyler doldurmuştu. Herkes
sabırsızlıkla, efsanevi bir caz sanatçısının sahneye çıkmasını bekliyordu. Bekledikleri bu kişi, “Altın Trompetli”
Louis Armstrong’du.
On the night of April 12, 1959, Hilton’s ballroom was
packed full with elegant ladies and gentlemen, all waiting
impatiently for a legendary jazz musician to appear onstage. The person they were waiting for was Louis Armstrong, the “Golden Trumpet.”
All Stars orkestrasıyla gerçekleştirdiği Avrupa turu kapsamında 1959’da İstanbul’a gelen Armstrong, kentte üç
büyük konser vermişti. Son konser, 12 Nisan günü saat
21:00’de Hilton’un Balo Salonu’nda düzenlenecekti. Bu
özel konsere gelenler, dünyanın en büyük trompetçisini
canlı izleme şansı bulacakları için heyecan içindeydi.
On a European tour with his All Stars orchestra, Armstrong gave three big concerts in İstanbul, the last of
which was held at Hilton’s ballroom on April 12, at 9 p.m.
The audience was full of excitement for having the opportunity to watch the greatest trumpet player in the world
perform live.
Louis Armstrong, arkadaşlarıyla sahneye çıktığında,
müthiş bir alkış koptu. Müzik, bu mükemmel atmosferde başladı. Fakat, Vefa Zat’a göre kabul edilemez bir
zamanlama hatası yüzünden aynı anda yemek servisi de
başlayınca, çatal bıçak sesleri yüzünden ünlü trompetçi kızgınlıkla sahneyi terk etti. Salon buz kesmişti. Otel
Müdürü Rudy Basler, Armstrong’u yeniden sahneye döndürmek için büyük çaba gösterdiyse de başarılı olamadı.
Sonunda, konuklar arasında bulunan ABD’nin Türkiye
Büyükelçisi devreye girerek durumu tatlıya bağladı. Gecenin kalanı, sabahın ilk ışıklarına kadar süren eşsiz bir
müzik ziyafetine dönüştü.
When Louis Armstrong and his friends came onstage, a
wild applause broke. The music began in this perfect atmosphere. According to Vefa Zat, however, an unacceptable timing error led to the main course being served at
the same time, and the clanking of cutlery infuriated the
famous trumpet player so much that he walked off the
stage. The ballroom seemed to have frozen over. Rudy
Basler, the hotel manager, did everything he could to get
Armstrong back onstage, but to no avail. The US Ambassador to Turkey was also among the guests, and it was he
who settled the matter. The rest of the night was unparalleled musical bliss that went on until the first light of day.

Amerika’nın en eski müzik kurumlarından biri olan 107
kişilik dev New York Filarmoni Orkestrası, Türkiye’deki
ilk konserini vermek üzere 1959 Ağustos’unda İstanbul’a
geldi. O dönemde 117. yılını kutlayan orkestra, ünlü şef
Leonard Bernstein’ın yönetiminde 11 ve 12 Ağustos günleri Açık Hava Tiyatrosu’nda İstanbullulara tam bir müzik ziyafeti sundu.
One of the oldest musical institutions of the United States,
the 107-member strong New York Philharmonic Orchestra came to İstanbul in August 1959 for its first concert
in Turkey. The orchestra was celebrating its 117th anniversary, and under the direction of Leonard Bernstein,
it offered a veritable musical feast to Istanbulites in the
Harbiye Open Air Theater on August 11 and 12.
Orkestranın Amerikan Kültür Mübadele Programı kapsamındaki ziyareti, o günlerde yurtdışından böyle önemli
müzik topluluklarının gelmesine pek alışkın olmayan İstanbullular tarafından coşkuyla karşılandı. Basın, orkestra elemanlarını ve enstrümanlarını İstanbul’a taşıyan üç
uçak Yeşilköy Havalimanı’na indiği andan itibaren, bu
ziyareti adım adım izlemeye başladı. Müzik eleştirmeni
ve besteci Bülent Tarcan, konserden birkaç gün önce gazetedeki köşesine yazdığı yazıda, bu şöhretli orkestranın
İstanbulluların hasret kaldığı müzik zevkini gidereceğini
belirtiyor ve konseri sabırsızlıkla beklediğini söylüyordu.
As part of the American Cultural Exchange Program, the
concerts were met with great enthusiasm by Istanbulites,
who in those days were not used to such visits by world
renowned music groups. The press closely covered the
visit, starting with the landing in Yeşilköy Airport of the
three planes that carried orchestra members and their
instruments. Music critic and composer Bülent Tarcan
wrote in his column a few days prior to the concert that
this famous orchestra would quench the thirst of Istanbulites for good music and that he was impatient for the
concert.
Bu kadar önem atfedilen orkestraya geleneksel Türk
misafirperverliğini yaşatma görevi ise Hilton İstanbul’a
verilmişti. Gerçekten de orkestra üyeleri kentte kaldıkları 3 gün boyunca adeta el üstünde tutuldular. Hilton
İstanbul’un o dönemki yöneticisi Louis Blouet, konuklarını rahat ettirmek için tüm orkestra üyeleriyle adeta tek
tek bizzat ilgilendi. İstanbullular da iki gece arka arkaya
Açık Hava Tiyatrosu’nu hıncahınç doldurdular. Ne var ki
bunca özene ve ilgiye rağmen, belediyenin ihmalkârlığı
nedeniyle bu emsalsiz sanat heyecanına gölge düşüren bir
olayın önüne geçilemedi.
Hilton Istanbul was charged with offering traditional
Turkish hospitality to this important orchestra. During their 3-day stay, orchestra members were pampered.
Louis Blouet, the manager of Hilton Istanbul at the time,
personally attended the needs of all the orchestra members. Istanbulites packed the concert venue for two nights
in a row. Despite all this care and attention, however, an
unfortunate incident nonetheless cast a shadow on this
unparalleled musical offering due to the negligence of the
municipality.

As four thousand people listened to the concert, afraid to
breathe and their eyes fixed on the stage, notes of a Turkish song from a nearby tavern suddenly filled the air.

Hilton İstanbul’un müzikle dansı 1955 yılındaki görkemli
açılış balosuyla başladı ve sonraki yıllarda hiç kesilmeden
devam etti. Conrad Hilton’un Ann Miller’la pistte sergilediği harika rumba gösterisine eşlik eden Eduardo Gadea
Orkestrası, ilk günden itibaren Hilton’un baş orkestrası
oldu. Onlara zaman zaman başka gruplar da katıldı. Fakat
bunların hepsinin ortak özelliği yabancı olmalarıydı. Yerli orkestralar, sadece özel ziyafetlerde çalabilirdi.
1961 yazında düzenlenen “Hilton İstanbul Birinci Müzik
Festivali”, bu açıdan bir dönüm noktası oldu. Etkinliğin
konukları arasında, dönemin en ünlü Türk müzisyenleri yer alıyordu: Erol Büyükburç, İsmet Sıral, Müfit Kiper,
Nejat Cendeli... Festivali, yine o yıllarda Türk popüler
müziğine damgasını vuran Fecri Ebcioğlu sunuyordu.
Bu tarihten sonra Hilton’da Türk gruplar giderek daha
fazla sahne almaya başladılar. Ünlü caz müzisyeni İsmet
Sıral, kurduğu orkestrayla uzun süre Hilton’un vazgeçilmezi oldu ve Ayla Dikmen, Asu Maralman, Özdemir
Erdoğan gibi isimlerin ünlenmesinde önemli rol oynadı.
1962’den sonra İsmet Sıral’ı Süheyl Denizci, Şerif Yüzbaşıoğlu, Kanat Gür ve Önder Bali gibi müzisyenler izledi.
Şerif Yüzbaşıoğlu’nun orkestrasında sahne alan genç solist Şenay, sonraki yıllarda Hayat Bayram Olsa adlı 45’liğiyle şöhrete ulaştı.
Hilton’da sahneye çıkan en renkli grup ise hiç şüphesiz
“Mavi Çocuklar”dı. 1967 yılında Altın Mikrofon yarışmasını kazanan grup, Hilton’un Roof Bar’ında uzun süre
konuklara eğlence dolu geceler yaşattıktan sonra, sessiz
sedasız müzik dünyasından kayboldu.
İsmet Sıral Orkestrası ve Nilüfer Hilton’da
Hilton Istanbul’s first encounter with music was at the
splendid opening ceremony in 1955, and continued uninterruptedly for years. The Eduardo Gadea Orchestra,
which was playing when Conrad Hilton performed an
impressive rumba with Ann Miller, became Hilton Istanbul’s main orchestra after the first day. Other groups occasionally joined them. The one thing they had in common
was that they were all from abroad. Local orchestras were
allowed to play only during special banquets.
The “Hilton Istanbul First Music Festival” held in the
summer of 1961 was a turning point in this sense. Among
the participants of the event were the most famous Turkish musicians of the period: Erol Büyükburç, İsmet Sıral,
Müfit Kiper, Nejat Cendeli... The festival was presented by
Fecri Ebcioğlu, one of the signature names of Turkish pop
music in those years.
After that date, Turkish groups became more frequent at
Hilton. İsmet Sıral, the famous jazz musician, formed his
own band and became irreplaceable at Hilton for a long
time, playing an important role in increasing the popularity of singers such as Ayla Dikmen, Asu Maralman, and
Özdemir Erdoğan. After 1962, İsmet Sıral was followed
by musicians such as Süheyl Denizci, Şerif Yüzbaşıoğlu,
Kanat Gür, and Önder Bali. Şenay, the young singer of the
Şerif Yüzbaşıoğlu orchestra, would later become famous
with her hit song Hayat Bayram Olsa.
The most colorful group performing at Hilton was “Mavi
Çocuklar.” The group won the Golden Microphone contest in 1967, but after years of offering pleasant night to
guests at Hilton’s Roof Bar, the group quietly disappeared
from the music scene.

Happiness through a series of coincidences
Soğuk Savaş’ın tüm şiddetiyle devam ettiği 1962 yılında,
havacılık sektörünün önde gelen şirketlerinden The Martin Company’de (sonradan Lockheed-Martin) çalışan
mühendis Robert Kessler ve eşi Mary Jeanne, bir uzay
mühendisliği kongresine katılmak üzere Bulgaristan’a giderler. Fakat dönüş yolunda, Amerika uçuşu için aktarma
yapacakları Atina uçağının habersiz bir şekilde iptal edildiğini öğrenirler. Kendileri gibi, konferansa katılan birçok
kişi Sofya Havaalanı’nda mahsur kalır. Onları götürecek
hiçbir uçak yoktur ve şartlar son derece kötüdür. Öyle ki
havaalanındaki restoranda yiyecek bile bulmak mümkün
değildir. Herkes aç, yorgun, uykusuz ve gergindir.
In 1962, with the Cold War continuing in the background,
Robert Kessler, who worked as an engineer at the famous
aviation company The Martin Company (later LockheedMartin), and his wife Mary Jeanne, went to Bulgaria to attend a congress on space engineering. On their way back,
however, they were informed that the connection flight
from Athens had been cancelled without prior notification. The couple, along with many people like them, were
stranded at the Sofia Airport. There was no plane to take
them, and the conditions were dire. The airport restaurant, for example, was unable to serve any food. Everyone
was hungry, tired, sleepless, and tense.

Sofya’daki yolcuları alabileceği söylenir. Havaalanında çaresiz beklemekte olan yolcular için bu bir kurtuluş ümidi olur. Böylece hiç hesapta yokken birçok kişinin rotası
İstanbul’a döner. Rezervasyonları olmadığı halde Hilton
İstanbul onlara kucak açar. Otel yönetimi, büyük bir anlayış ve nezaketle yardımcı olur.
At that point, it was announced that the KLM plane flying from Bucharest to İstanbul would be able to take the
passengers in Sofia. This offered hope of rescue to the
passengers waiting helplessly at the airport, and many
people’s itinerary turned to İstanbul on the spur of the
moment. Even though they had no reservations, Hilton
Istanbul was pleased to host them. The hotel management
helped them with great understanding and kindness.
Bu olayı büyük bir tebessümle anımsayan Robert ve Mary
Jeanne Kessler çifti, İstanbul’da kaldıkları birkaç gün boyunca gördükleri misafirperverliği, İsviçre dışında başka
hiçbir yerde görmediklerini söylüyorlar. Kaldıkları odanın eşsiz Boğaz manzarasıyla büyülenen çift, o günlerin
anısını yeniden yaşamak için 53 yıl sonra, 2015 yılında
yeniden Hilton İstanbul Bosphorus’un konuğu oldular.
Robert and Mary Jeanne Kessler remember this incident
with a smile, and say they have never seen such hospitality
with which they were met in İstanbul for those few days,
except perhaps in Switzerland. The couple was spellbound
by the incredible Bosphorus view of their room, and 53
years later, came back in 2015 to rekindle the memory of
those days, staying at Hilton Istanbul Bosphorus.

Rusya’dan Sevgilerle
From Russia with Love
Üzerine mükemmel bir şekilde oturan kıyafeti ve elindeki
deri çantasıyla Hilton İstanbul’un kapısından giren yakışıklı adam, çevredeki şık hanımların meraklı bakışları
altında kararlı adımlarla resepsiyona yürüdü. Kendisine
adını soran resepsiyonda görevli kadına, o ünlü çapkın
gülümsemesiyle cevap verdi: “Bond, James Bond.”
Wearing a suit that fit him perfectly and carrying a leather
briefcase in his hand, the handsome man walking into
Hilton Istanbul headed towards the reception desk as the
elegant ladies watched him. The receptionist asked him
his name, and he replied her with this famous Casanova
smile: “Bond. James Bond.”
İşte 1963 yılında çevrilen From Russia with Love (Rusya’dan Sevgilerle) filminde Sean Connery tarafından canlandırılan 007’nin İstanbul macerası böyle başladı.

Sovyetler’in geliştirdiği bir kripto cihazı olan Lektor bir
süredir kayıptır. Rusya ve ABD gibi İngiltere de bu cihazın peşindedir. James Bond, Lektor’u elde etmekle görevlendirilir. Bu görevin gerçekleştirileceği yer ise, “T İstasyonu” olarak adlandırılan Türkiye’dir.
Yeşilköy Havaalanı’na inen Bond, İstanbul’dayken kendisine yardımcı olmakla görevli Kerim Bey’in şoförü tarafından karşılanır. Yeşilköy’den itibaren takip edilmeye başlandığını fark eden Bond’a, Kerim Bey durumu şöyle açıklar:
“Balkanlar’a hoş geldin dostum. Burada birbirimize pek
zorluk çıkartmayız. Biz gizlenmeye ihtiyaç duymadan Rusları takip ederiz, Ruslar adına çalışan Bulgarlar da bizi...”

Bu andan itibaren izleyici kendini, “herkesin herkese karşı çalıştığı” tipik bir Bond öyküsünün içinde bulur. Bond
serisinin en iyileri arasında gösterilen film boyunca casusluk oyunları hiç bitmez ve heyecanın dozu asla düşmez. Özellikle Orient Express’te geçen sahneler, macera
tutkunları tarafından türünün zirvesi olarak tanımlanır.
1960’ların İstanbul’unun hayranlıkla izlendiği filmde,
dönemin sosyal yaşamı içinde Hilton adeta Doğu ve Batı’nın kesişme noktası olarak tam merkezde yer alır.
Lektor, the encryption device developed by the Soviets,
has been lost for a while. Russia, the United States, as
well as the UK are trying to get their hands on the device.
James Bond’s mission is to capture Lektor. The location is
“Station T,” in other words, Turkey.
James Bond land at Yeşilköy Airport and is met by Kerim’s
driver; Kerim is to help him during his stay in İstanbul.
Bond notices that they are being followed since the minute they left the airport, and Kerim offers the following
explanation: “Welcome to the Balkans, my friend. We
don’t like to make things difficult for each other here. We
openly tail the Russians, and the Bulgarians who work for
the Russians openly tail us...”
From that point on, the viewers find themselves immersed in a typical Bond story where “everyone works
against everyone else.” Regarded as one of the best Bond
movies, From Russia with Love is packed with spy games
and the tension never slackens. Especially the scenes in
the Orient Express are regarded by aficionados as the best
of the thriller genre.
The film is full of beautiful scenes of İstanbul from the
1960s, and Hilton seems to be right in the center at the
intersection point of the East and the West.

Tourism develops and Hilton grows
Hilton İstanbul’un açılışının birinci yılında açıklanan istatistikler, bunun ne kadar doğru bir yatırım olduğunu
ispatlıyordu. Bir yıl içinde otelde 31 bin kişi konaklamış,
295 davete yaklaşık 40 bin kişi katılmış, 59 balo ve 22 düğün gerçekleştirilmişti.
The statistics announced at the end of Hilton’s first year
proved what a good investment this had been. In one
year, 21,000 guests had stayed at the hotel, 40,000 people
had attended 295 receptions, and 59 balls and 22 weddings had been held.
Otele talep çok büyüktü ve önceden rezervasyon yaptırmadıkça oda bulmak mümkün değildi. Bu nedenle, 1957
yılında orijinal tasarıma sadık kalınarak, ek bir blok inşa
edilmesine karar verildi. Ancak, ülkenin içinden geçtiği
siyasi süreç nedeniyle inşaat ancak 1965 yılında tamamlanabildi. Hilton İstanbul, 10. yılında, 150 yeni odasını hizmete açtı. Üstelik yine bir ilke imza atılmış ve tüm odalar
klimalı yapılmıştı. 1969 yılında yapılan ek bir çalışmayla
eski odalar da hem yenilendi, hem de iklimlendirildi.
Demand for the hotel was huge, and without prior reservation, it was impossible to get a room. For this reason, it was decided in 1957 to build an additional block
in line with the original design. This construction, however, could only be finished in 1965, due to the political
situation in the country. In its 10th year, Hilton Istanbul
opened its new block with 150 rooms. Marking another
first, all new rooms had air conditioning. In 1969, the old
rooms were also renewed and air conditioners were installed.
Hilton İstanbul, bu yıldan sonra da birçok kez günün
şartlarına uygun şekilde renove edildi. 1983 yılında “otel
içinde otel” konsepti doğrultusunda kendi özel asansörü,
otele giriş işlemleri için özel bölümü, barı ve oturma salonuyla “Club Floors” devreye alındı. Bu konseptin yoğun
ilgi görmesi nedeniyle 1985’te Executive Floor genişletildi. Yine aynı dönemde, talebe bağlı olarak oda sayısının
bir kez daha artırılmasına karar verildi. Dört ay gibi rekor
bir sürede otele 100 oda daha ilave edilmesiyle Hilton İstanbul, yeniden kentin en büyük oteli haline geldi.
Hilton Istanbul was renovated many times after that, as
dictated by passing time. In 1983, the “Club Floors” was
opened, which, in line with the “hotel within a hotel” concept, had its own elevator, check-in desk, bar, and lounge.
When this concept proved to be very successful, the Executive Floor was expanded in 1985. To meet growing
demand, the number of rooms was increased once again
during the same period. In a record four months, 100
new rooms were added and Hilton Istanbul once again
became the biggest hotel in the city.

A birthday to the accompaniment of marches
Tarihi boyunca konuklarının birçok sevincine ortak olan
Hilton İstanbul, doğum günü partilerinin de gözde mekânıydı. Doğum gününü Hilton’da kutlayan sayısız isim
arasında, bunu bir gelenek haline getiren özel isimler de
vardı. Türkiye Cumhuriyeti’nin kurucularından, ikinci
Cumhurbaşkanı İsmet İnönü, onlardan biriydi.
80’li yaşlarının çoğunu Hilton’da kutlayan İnönü’nün, otel
tarihinde ayrı bir yeri var. 24 Eylül 1966 günü 83. doğum
günü pastasını “Dağ Başını Duman Almış” marşı eşliğinde Hilton’da kesen İsmet İnönü, eşi Mevhibe Hanım’la ilk
tangosunu da burada yaptı. Gazetelerden okuyoruz:
Şerefine verilen partide kendisine ilk dansı açması teklif
olununca, bütün gece elini bırakmadığı eşi Mevhibe İnönü’ye dönen İsmet İnönü, “Ne dersiniz, şöyle bir dolaşalım
mı?” diye sormuştur. Eşinin hafif bir tebessümle mukabele etmesiyle cesaretlenen partililer, “Paşam, hafif bir tur...
Mesela tango...” diye diretince İnönü, şu cevabı vermiştir:
“Tango... Amma, ben bilmem ki tango!” Ancak toplantıya
katılanların en gencinin piste davet edilmesi üzerine eşiyle
birlikte piste çıkan İnönü, kısa bir süre Mevhibe İnönü’ye
sımsıkı sarılarak, birkaç dönüş yapmıştır.

Hilton Istanbul participated in the joy of many of its
guests throughout its history, and was the favorite venue
for birthday parties. Among the great many people celebrating their birthdays at Hilton, there were some special
names who had turned this into a tradition. İsmet İnönü,
one of the founding fathers of the Republic and its second
president, was one such name.
İnönü celebrated most of his birthdays in his eighties at
Hilton, and had a special place in the history of the hotel.
On September 24, 1966, İnönü cut his 83rd birthday cake
to the tune of the “Dağ Başını Duman Almış” march, and
had the first waltz with his wife Mevhibe Hanım. The papers read:
“When it was suggested that he have the first dance at the
party in his honor, İsmet İnönü turned to his wife Mevhibe
Hanım, whose hand he had been holding all through the
night, and said, ‘What do you say we take a few turns?’
When she replied with a smile, the party members insisted,
‘Yes, Pasha, just a few turns… Maybe a tango…’ İnönü was
uncertain: ‘Tango… I don’t know how to tango!’ Only after
the youngest guests were invited to dance did İnönü take
his wife to the dance floor, and holding her tightly, made a
few turns.”
İnönü cut his cake on his 85th birthday to the accompaniment of the song “Bir Şarkısın Sen” performed by Nevin
Pere, an opera singer. On his 87th birthday, İnönü’s table
was adorned with the roses sent by the new president of
the Republican People’s Party, Bülent Ecevit.
As the living witness of history, Hilton is filled with unforgettable memories of the most special moments of

1967 yılında ırk ayrımcılığına karşı birçok ülkeyi kapsayan bir geziye çıkan Marlon Brando’nun duraklarından
biri de İstanbul’du. 19 Şubat 1967 günü İstanbul’a inen
ünlü aktör, Hilton’da Karadeniz Süiti’ne yerleşti. Ünlü aktörün İstanbul’u ziyaret nedenlerinden biri de, Türkiye’de
yaşayan yakın dostu, yazar James Baldwin’i görmek ve senaryosunu yazacağı ırkçılık karşıtı film hakkında fikrini
almaktı.
In 1967, Marlon Brando went on a world tour against racism, and one of his stops was İstanbul. The famous actor
arrived on February 19, 1967, and settled in the Black Sea
Suite at Hilton Istanbul. Another reason behind the visit
was James Baldwin, a very good friend of Brando’s, who
was living in İstanbul at the time; Brando wanted to see
him and talk about the anti-racist movie, whose screenplay he was going to write.
İstanbul’da kaldığı sürece otelden pek çıkmayan Brando,
bu sırada gazetecilerle ırkçılık karşıtı görüşlerini ve yoksullukla mücadeleye yönelik fikirlerini paylaştığı bir de
basın toplantısı gerçekleştirdi. Amerikan kahvesi yerine
genellikle Türk kahvesi içmeyi tercih eden Brando, Hilton İstanbul’un simgesi haline gelen “kahveci güzeli”nin
yardımıyla fal bakmayı da öğrendi.
Brando did not emerge much from his room during his
visit, but did hold a press conference to share with reporters his views on anti-racism and fighting with poverty. Brando usually preferred Turkish coffee instead of
American, and learned how to tell fortunes using a coffee
cup with the help of a “coffee beauty,” by now a symbol of
Hilton Istanbul.
Brando’nun ziyaretinin en heyecanlı olayı ise, ünlü aktörün akşam balık yemek üzere gazetecileri mutfak kapısından çıkarak atlatması, buna karşın gazetecilerin durumu
fark edip onu Sarıyer’de yakalamasıydı.
The most exciting part of Brando’s visit occurred when
the famous actor tricked the reporters one night by exiting through the kitchen door to go to a fish restaurant, but
the reporters noticed and caught up with him in Sarıyer.

Selections for de Gaulle from Hilton’s kitchen
Hilton İstanbul, konuklarına sunduğu konaklama konforunun yanı sıra eşsiz lezzetleriyle de İstanbul’daki yemeiçme sektörüne yüksek kaliteyi getirmişti. Zengin menüsü ve yaratıcı sunumlarıyla İstanbul’da ayrıcalıklı bir
yere sahip olan Hilton, sektörün standartlarını belirleyen
öncü bir rol üstlenmişti.
Besides a comfortable stay, Hilton Istanbul offered its
guests culinary delights, bringing a high level of quality
to the food-and-beverage sector in İstanbul. With its rich
menu and creative presentations, Hilton became a select
destination in İstanbul and began to dictate the standards
of the sector as its leader.

1968 Ekim’inde Türkiye’yi ziyaret eden Fransa Devlet
Başkanı General De Gaulle için Dolmabahçe Sarayı’nda
verilen ziyafet, her detayı ile Hilton’a emanet edilen özel
organizasyonlardan biriydi. Davet için Hilton’un Danimarkalı şefi, ıstakozdan havyara tam 90 çeşit yemek hazırlamıştı. Dönemin Başbakanı Süleyman Demirel’in ev
sahipliğinde verilen davette yemekler gümüş takımlarla
sunulmuş, mükemmel bir organizasyon başarısı gösterilmişti.
Hilton’s kitchen did not only serve the hotel’s guests but
also provided catering for events outside the hotel. One of
the special events entrusted fully to Hilton was the banquet given in the honor of French President General de
Gaulle, who visited Turkey in October 1968. The occasion, Hilton’s Danish chef prepared 90 dishes including
lobster and caviar. The reception was hosted by Süleyman
Demirel, the prime minister of the period, and dinner was
served in silverware; the occasion was a glowing success.
Pastadan yapılmış ışıklar içindeki Eyfel Kulesi ile şekerden yapılmış Zafer Anıtı ise, konuklar tarafından gerçek
birer sanat eseri gibi hayranlıkla karşılanmıştı. Yemeğe
sanat boyutu katan şef Karl Hörmann’ın hem De Gaulle
hem Demirel tarafından ayrı ayrı tebrik edildiği davet,
gazete sütunlarından günlerce inmemişti.
Davetin başarısından övgüyle söz edenlerden biri de,
ünlü gazeteci Mehmet Ali Birand’dı. Birand, köşesinde,
maliyeti ne olursa olsun Türkiye’nin tanıtımı ve prestiji
açısından böyle bir davetin hiçbir bedelle ölçülemeyecek
kadar kıymetli olduğunu söylüyordu.
The Eiffel Tower decorated with lights and the Arc de
Triomphe made of candy were inspired awe in the guests
much like true works of art would. Master Chef Karl Höfmann, who added an artistic dimension to the dinner, was
personally congratulated by both de Gaulle and Demirel,
and the event was discussed in the papers for days.
One of those who praised the banquet was the famous
journalist Mehmet Ali Birand, who wrote in his column
that such a reception made an immeasurably valuable
contribution to Turkey’s promotion and prestige, whatever the cost.

Oteller, hayatın 24 saat yaşandığı yerlerdir. Hele ki bu otel
Hilton İstanbul gibi sosyal hayatın merkezinde bir otelse,
geceleri de en az gündüzleri kadar hareketli bir yaşam sürer gider. Hatta, Demir Gürel’in bahsettiği gibi, gecenin
karanlığından kimi zaman gündüz rastlanması güç nice
sürprizler çıkıp gelir:

1970 yılında gece resepsiyon memuru olarak çalışmaya
başladığım Hilton İstanbul sadece bir konaklama tesisi
değil, toplumun gözbebeği bir buluşma ve iletişim merkeziydi. Burası yabancı ve bilhassa Amerikalı turistler için
fahri bir konsolosluk veya ikinci adresti. Otelde kalmasalar
da seyahat çeki bozdurmak, uluslararası telefon görüşmesi
yapmak, teleks göndermek için gelirlerdi. Kimi zaman da
dertlerini anlatır ve yardımımızı isterlerdi.
I began working at Hilton Istanbul in 1970 as night receptionist, and at the time the hotel was not just a facility
for accommodation but a meeting place and communication center loved by the whole society. This was an honorary consulate or a second address for foreign tourists and
especially for Americans. Even if they did not stay at the
hotel, they came in to cash a traveler’s check, to place an
international call or send a telex message. They would also
come before they had to go to the police and ask for advice
concerning their troubles.

The night shift is different from the day shift. People obey the
rules during the day, but feel greater freedom after nightfall.
Eskiden şehirlerde atlı yük arabaları vardı. Bir gece saat
02.00 sularında böyle bir yük arabası giriş kapısına yanaştığında, ne oluyor diye koşup baktık. Ford, Mercedes
ve Cadillac gibi lüks otomobillere alışkın ön kapıda bir
at arabası duruyordu. Başı kasketli bir köylü vatandaş ile
şalvarlı eşinin el ele arabadan indiğini ve bize doğru geldiğini gördük. “Hayırdır!” diye sorduğumuzda, “Beyim, bu
hatun senelerdir beni Hilton’a götür diye tutturuyor. Ben
de bugün ‘Gel gidiyoruz hatun’ dedim. Tekirdağ’dan sabah
yola çıktık, ancak gelebildik. Şöyle bir gördükten sonra geri
döneceğiz,” cevabını aldık.
Kendilerine çay ve kuru pasta ikram edip yeniden evlerine
uğurlarken, aramızda şöyle konuşuyorduk: “Helal olsun,
adama bak! Hiç olmazsa hanımının isteğini o da kendi özel
aracıyla yerine getirmiş.”

Hotels are alive 24/7. If a hotel is located in the center of
social life like Hilton Istanbul, then night life is as exciting
as the daytime. And sometimes, as Demir Gürel notes,
many surprises emerge from the darkness of the night,
which would be hard to come by during the day:
There used to be horse wagons in cities. One night, around
2 a.m., such a wagon came to the main entrance, and we
went out to see what was going on. There it was, a horse
wagon among luxury cars like Cadillac, Mercedes, and
Ford. We saw a peasant and his wife, dressed in peasant
costumes, step off the wagon holding hands and walk towards us. When we asked them what was going on, the
man said, “My wife has been asking me to take her to Hilton for years. Today I told her, ‘Come on, we are going,’ and
we left Tekirdağ in the morning. We have been on the road
since then. We’ll just take a look, and then head back.”
We offered them pastries and tea, and sent them off, saying
to each other, “Hell of a man! And he used his personal car
to make her dream come true.”

The place to go for a good time
Pop kültürünün ikonu sayılabilecek disko topunun İstanbul’da ilk ışıldadığı yer, kentin bar, müzik ve eğlence
kültürüne önemli katkılar sağlayan Hilton’du. Otelin
kendine özgü dekor ve kokteylleriyle öne çıkan barları,
kısa zamanda İstanbulluların gözdesi olmuştu. Özellikle
Karagöz Bar ve Lalezar Bar, dönemin en ünlü isimlerini
buluşturan mekânlardı. Harika manzarasıyla Roof Bar
ise, Hilton İstanbul’un duayen barmeni Vefa Zat’ın tanımlamasıyla “İstanbul’un çatısı”, sosyetenin ve İstanbul
elitinin vazgeçilmez uğrak noktalarından biriydi.
Bu ultra lüks mekân, 1971 yılında Cloud 9 adıyla İstanbul’un ilk diskoteğine dönüştürüldü. Gece saat 22.00’den
sabah 03.00’e kadar açık olan Cloud 9, açıldığı günden itibaren yıllarca kapalı gişe çalıştı. Müzik, o dönemde Avrupa’nın popüler diskjokeylerinden olan Lady Barbara adlı
bir İngilize teslim edilmişti. Kışkırtıcı bir güzelliğe sahip
olan Lady Barbara, Cloud 9’ın müdavimleri arasında
“Yellow Daisy” (Sarı Papatya) adıyla ünlenecekti.
Cloud 9’ın gördüğü ilgi, şehrin dört bir yanında yeni diskotekler açılmasına ve disko barlar döneminin başlamasına neden oldu.
Probably the universal icon of pop culture, the disco ball
shone for the first time in İstanbul at Hilton, which made
an important contribution to the bar, music, and entertainment culture of the city. The bars of the hotel were
decorated uniquely and had their own cocktails, making
them a favorite among Istanbulites. Karagöz Bar and Lalezar Bar were especially successful at bringing together
the most famous names of the time. Roof Bar, with its
gorgeous view, was “İstanbul’s roof,” as the city’s doyen
bartender Vefa Zat called it, and one of the hotspots for
the elites of the city.
In 1971, this ultra-luxurious venue was converted into
İstanbul’s first discotheque. Open from 10 p.m. to 3 a.m.,
Cloud 9 was a full house from its first day, managed by
Lady Barbara, a British disc jockey popular in Europe.
Lady Barbara soon came to be known as “Yellow Daisy”
among the frequenters of Cloud 9.
The success enjoyed by Cloud 9 caused many new discos
to be opened all around the city and prompted the era of
disco bars.

Düğün ve nişanların yoğunluk kazandığı yaz aylarında,
Hilton bu tür organizasyonlar için en çok tercih edilen
mekân oluyordu. 1972 yazında, Hilton Oteli’nde sadece
bir hafta içinde, akşamüstü kokteylleri ve gece düğünleri
olmak üzere, 21 çift dünya evine girmişti.
Hilton was the venue of choice for weddings and engagements during summer months, when the number of such
organizations increased greatly. In the summer of 1972,
in only one week, 21 couples got married at Hilton Istanbul, having afternoon cocktails or evening weddings.
Beyaz gelinlik içerisinde muhteşem bir törenle evlenmek
nasıl her genç kızın rüyası ise, düğününü Hilton’da yapmak da genç çiftlerin bir o kadar hayaliydi. Hilton’da düğün yapmak kadar, düğüne davet edilmek de bir ayrıcalıktı. Organizasyonlar en ince detayına kadar planlanıyor,
bazı düğünlerin hazırlığı bir aydan fazla sürüyordu.
Just as every young woman dreams of getting married
in a white wedding gown at a magnificent ceremony, so
did young couples dream of getting married at Hilton. It
was a privilege to get married at Hilton, just as it was a
privilege to be invited to a Hilton wedding. Organizations
were meticulously planned, and preparations for some
weddings took more than a month.

Hilton’da “Happy Hour”
“Happy Hour” at Hilton
Hilton İstanbul’un gözde mekânlarından Karagöz Bar’ın
yerine 1972 baharında inşa edilen Pilsen Pub, İstanbul’da
“Happy Hour” uygulamasını ilk başlatan yerdi.
İngiltere’deki örneklerinden yola çıkılarak tümüyle ahşaptan inşa edilen Pilsen Pub, sonraki yıllarda konsept ve
tasarımıyla İstanbul’da birçok bara örnek teşkil etti. Barda, her akşam 17.00 ile 19.00 saatleri arasında içkilerin
yarı yarıya indirimli olması, geniş bir kitlenin ilgisini çekip “Happy Hour” kültürünün doğmasını sağladı.
Piyano ile canlı müziğin yapıldığı Pilsen Pub’ın müdavimleri arasında birçok ünlü isim bulunuyordu. Sonraki
yıllarda ünlü bir manken ve yıldız olarak adından söz ettirecek olan Güngör Bayrak da, Pilsen Pub’da servis görevlisi olarak çalışıyordu. Onu burada keşfedip Hilton’da
düzenlenen bir defilede manken olarak podyuma çıkaran
kişi ise, ünlü modacı Vitali Hakko’dan başkası değildi.
Replacing Karagöz Bar, which was one of the favorite
spots at Hilton Istanbul, the Pilsen Pub built in the spring
of 1972 was the place where “Happy Hours” started in
İstanbul.
Built like English pubs using wood only, Pilsen Pub was
the inspiration behind many future bars in İstanbul with
its concept and design. Drinks were served at half price
between 5 and 7 p.m., which attracted a big crowd and
gave birth to the “Happy Hours” culture.
Pilsen Pub offered live piano music, and there were many
famous people among its regulars. Güngör Bayrak, who
would later become a famous model and star, worked as
service personnel at Pilsen Pub. It was the famous fashion
designer Vitali Hakko who discovered her and put her on
the catwalk for a fashion show held at Hilton.

Moda Festivali’nin ev sahipliğine, herhalde şıklığın ve zarafetin merkezi olan Hilton İstanbul’dan başka bir mekân
bu kadar yakışmazdı.
Probably no other venue would be as fitting as Hilton Istanbul, the center of style and elegance, for hosting the
International Istanbul Fashion Festival, which would be
held in İstanbul for the first time.
1973 Şubat’ında 5 gün süren festivalde şov mankeni, sergi
mankeni, hostes ve sekreter olarak görev alacak genç kızlar, yine Hilton’da düzenlenen görüşmeler yoluyla seçildi.
Elemelere 400 aday başvuru yapmıştı; fakat bunlardan
sadece 40 tanesi şov mankeni, 100 tanesi de sergi mankeni olma şansını elde edebildi. Etkinliğe, 1000’den fazla
yabancı konuk davetliydi.
Continuing for five days in February 1973, the young
women who would work as show models, exhibition
models, hostesses, and secretaries were chosen through
interviews held at Hilton. There were 400 candidates;
only 40 of them got to be show models, and 100 of them
were exhibition models. More than 1000 foreign guests
were invited to the event.
Türkiye Cumhuriyeti’nin 50. yıl kutlamaları kapsamında
gerçekleştirilen festivale, 14 ülkeden çok sayıda moda firması katıldı. Türk moda sektörünün gelişmesine büyük
katkıda bulunan organizasyonun elde ettiği başarı, daha
sonraki yıllarda da uluslararası moda etkinlikleri için
Hilton İstanbul’un değişmez bir adres olmasını sağladı.
The festival was part of the 50th anniversary celebrations
of the Republic of Turkey, and a great number of fashion
companies from 14 countries participated in the festival.
The event made a great contribution to the development
of the fashion industry in Turkey, and its success ensured
that Hilton Istanbul would be the venue for international
fashion events.

Hilton, açılışının ardından İstanbul’un kent yaşamıyla
öyle bütünleşmiş, İstanbullular tarafından öylesine içselleştirilmişti ki, şehrin en önemli simgelerinin resmedildiği İstanbul kartpostallarının da ayrılmaz bir parçası

After it opened, Hilton became an integral part of the urban life in İstanbul, and Istanbulites embraced the hotel
to such a degree that it was also depicted in the postcards
of İstanbul along with the most important symbols of
the city. Hilton was considered to be among worthwhile
sights and buildings that were the pride of the city such
as Sultanahmet Mosque, Hagia Sophia, Topkapı Palace,
Maiden Tower, and Galata Tower.

French winds in İstanbul
Hilton İstanbul, 1975 yazında Air France ile birlikte düzenlediği Fransız Haftası’yla seçkin etkinliklerine bir yenisini daha ekledi. İstanbul’da büyük ilgi uyandıran hafta
nedeniyle otelde büyük bir hareketlilik yaşandı. Bu özel
haftanın en iyi şekilde gerçekleştirilmesi için etkinlik öncesinde organizasyon ekibi Paris’e giderek bir hafta süreyle hazırlık yaptı.
In the summer of 1975, Hilton Istanbul added to its select activities the French Week in collaboration with Air
France. The week was very popular in İstanbul, and the
hotel became the center of much bustle. In order to ensure that everything would run smoothly, the organization team went to Paris before the event and made preparations for a week.
Fransız Haftası, 7 Haziran akşamı gerçekleştirilen özel
davetle başladı. Galaya İstanbul Valisi, Fransa Büyükelçisi, İstanbul Belediye Başkanı, tanınmış işadamları ve
ünlü simalar katıldılar. Hilton İstanbul’un yeni bir yapımı
olarak hazırlanan “Spring in Paris” adlı kokteyl ilk kez bu
galada ikram edildi. Gala yemeğinde, Air France başaşçısı Henri Stoll ve Hilton başaşçısı Hans Laurentius’un

The French Week was kicked off on the evening of June
7 with an exclusive reception. The gala was attended by
the Governor of İstanbul, the French Ambassador, the
Mayor of İstanbul, prominent businessmen and celebrities. “Spring in Paris,” the new cocktail prepared by Hilton Istanbul, was offered for the first time at this gala. The
special courses prepared by Henri Stoll, the chef of Air
France, and Hans Laurentius, the chef of Hilton, were
served to the accompaniment of an original show. The
surprises of the dinner included foie gras, original French
cheese and French champagne brought in by plane from
France.
Yemeğin ardından, Fransa’dan sekiz mankeniyle birlikte
gelmiş olan ünlü modacı Guy Laroche’un defilesi başladı.
Guy Laroche’un son kreasyonları ilgiyle izlenirken, ünlü
tasarımcının hazırladığı nefis bir gece elbisesinin ödül
olarak sunulduğu piyango davetliler arasında büyük heyecan yarattı. Piyangonun diğer hediyeleri arasında, iki
çifte Air France ile Paris’e gidiş-dönüş bilet ve Paris Hilton’da bir hafta konaklama da bulunuyordu.

After dinner came the fashion show by Guy Laroche,
who had come from France with eight of his models. The
audience watched his latest creations with great interest
and the lottery, offering a gorgeous Guy Leroche evening
dress to the winner, created great excitement. Among
other prizes of the lottery were two two-way Air France
tickets to Paris and a week at Hilton Paris.
Throughout the French Week, which brought French
winds to İstanbul, Hilton Istanbul offered special French
dishes. The Guy Laroche show was repeated twice, once
at the pool and then again at the Roof Rotisserie.

Muhammed Ali’nin asıl adı, köle olan dedesinin ismi olan

dünya ağır sıklet boks şampiyonu olunca, “Artık köle değilim, adım bundan böyle Muhammed Ali,” diyerek İslam
dinini seçmişti. Bu, onu, tüm dünyada ezilen halkların ve
Müslümanların sevgilisi haline getirmişti.
Türkiye’de de maçlarını seyretmek için kadın erkek herkesin sabaha karşı yataktan kalkıp ekran karşısına geçtiği Muhammed Ali, 1976 Ekim’inde dönemin Başbakan
Yardımcısı Necmettin Erbakan’ın davetiyle İstanbul’a
geldi. Önce Süleymaniye Camii’nde cuma namazını kılan
Muhammed Ali, sonra büyük bir kalabalığın toplandığı
Sultanahmet Meydanı’nda hayranlarına seslendi. Türkiye’deki tüm gazeteler, Muhammed Ali’nin gelişine geniş

The World Heavyweight Boxing Champion Muhammad
Ali was not only the best boxer of all time but also one of
the most important icons of the 20th century. The world
came to know him with his words, “I fly like a butterfly and I sting like a bee.” Muhammad Ali was a tornado
in the ring with his extraordinary style and agility, and
throughout his career he lost only 5 of his 61 matches.
He was the first boxer to win the world champion title
three times.
Muhammad Ali’s real name was Cassius Marcellus Clay,
the name of his slave grandfather. When he became the
world champion at only 22, the young boxer had declared, “I’m no longer a slave, and from now on my name
is Muhammad Ali,” and converted to Islam. This made
him a favorite among Muslims and all the oppressed people of the world.
Men and women alike would get up in the wee hours
of the morning in Turkey as well to watch Muhammad
Ali’s games on TV, and the boxer came to İstanbul in the
autumn of 1976 as the guest of Deputy Prime Minister
Necmettin Erbakan. He first attended the Friday prayers
at Süleymaniye Mosque, and then addressed the huge
crowd of fans at Sultanahmet Square. All newspapers in
Turkey covered his visit extensively, but one of his announcements in İstanbul would make it to the headlines
the next day all over the world:
I’m quitting boxing!
Muhammad Ali, who had just beaten Ken Norton in
a tough fight a few days ago, stayed in İstanbul for one
night only. The famous boxer naturally stayed at Hilton.

Hilton İstanbul, hiçbir zaman yalnızca bir otel olmadı.
Bu özel mekân, bir buluşma noktası olarak kısa sürede
İstanbulluların vazgeçilmezleri arasına girdi. Özellikle
Hilton’un gelenekselleşen beş çayları, kentin cemiyet hayatında çok önemli bir yer edindi. Milliyet’in ünlü dedikodu yazarı Berin, Hilton’daki beş çaylarının atmosferini
okurlarına şöyle aktarıyordu:
Hilton Oteli’nin çay saatleri moda oldu. Akşamüstleri,
dörtle yedi arasında bütün İstanbul’un sıra sıra oradan
geçtiğini görmek mümkün oluyor. Hanımlarımız, süslerini
boşaltacak bir mahreç daha buldular. Yeni açıldığı günlerde otele kravatsız girmek yasaktı. Bilmem bunu söylemek
mübalağa mı olur, fakat neredeyse Hilton’un müzikli çaylarına vizonsuz girmek de yasak olacak… Doğrusunu söylemek lazım gelirse bu şıklık, bu zarafet giyene de, seyredene
de büyük bir zevk veriyor.
Hilton’un beş çayları, dönemin sinema filmlerine de esin
kaynağı oldu. 1976 tarihli Zeki Ökten komedisi Ne Umduk Ne Bulduk, Hilton’da geçen eğlenceli hikâyesiyle, izleyenleri hayli güldürmüştü. Yeşilçam’ın altın yıllarında
Hilton İstanbul, filmlerin vazgeçilmez dekoruydu. Bir
Alman-Türk ortak yapımı olan İstanbul Macerası (1958),
Katilin Kızı (1964), Turist Ömer (1964), Hırsız (1965), Ah
Güzel İstanbul (1966) ve Karateciler İstanbul’da (1974) bu

Hilton Istanbul was never only a hotel. This special place
soon became a fixture among Istanbulites as a meeting
place. Hilton’s traditional five o’clock teas soon came to
hold a very important place in the social life of the city.
Berin, the gossip columnist of Milliyet, described the atmosphere of the five o’clock teas to her readers as follows:
“Hilton Hotel’s tea parties are quite the new trend. Istanbulites stop by the hotel’s tea lounge every evening from four
to seven. Ladies have now found an opportunity to show
their style. During the first days after the hotel’s opening,
men were not allowed inside without ties. This may sound
a little exaggerated, but let me tell you, Hilton might well
introduce a mink dress code for musical tea parties… To tell
the truth, the elegant and fashionable atmosphere is highly
pleasing for everyone, both for the starring ladies and for
the audience.”
Hilton’s five o’clock teas also inspired movies of the period. Ne Umduk Ne Bulduk (What We Expected and what
We Got), a 1976 comedy by Zeki Ökten, was very popular
among moviegoers with its funny story that took place
at Hilton. During the golden years of Yeşilçam*, Hilton
Istanbul was the indispensable backdrop of movies such
as Bir İstanbul Macerası (An İstanbul Adventure, GermanTurkish coproduction, 1958), Turist Ömer (Tourist Ömer,
1964), Hırsız (Thief, 1965), Ah Güzel İstanbul (Oh Beautiful İstanbul, 1966), and Karateciler İstanbul’da (Karate
Masters in İstanbul, 1974).
* Yeşilçam is a metonym for the Turkish film industry, similar to Hollywood in the

1980 yılına gelindiğinde Hilton, İstanbul’da 25. yılını geride bırakmıştı. Bu 25 yıl içinde Hilton İstanbul hem kendi
büyümüş, hem de Türk turizminin gelişmesine önemli
katkı sağlamıştı.
Dönemin başbakanı Süleyman Demirel’in, 25. yıl için organize edilen “Gümüş Yıl” kutlamaları nedeniyle verdiği
mesaj da, Hilton’un turizm sektörü açısından önemine
vurgu yapıyordu. Demirel, mesajında Hilton’un Türk turizmi için bir milat olduğunu belirtiyor ve aslında Türkiye’deki modern turizmin de Hilton’la birlikte “Gümüş
Yıl”ını kutladığını belirtiyordu.
Demirel ayrıca, 25 yıl içinde sağladığı 356 milyon dolarlık

period Hilton Istanbul itself grew while contributing to
the development of Turkish tourism.
In his message congratulating Hilton on its “Silver Anniversary,” Prime Minister Süleyman Demirel emphasized
Hilton’s importance for the tourism industry. Demirel
said Hilton had been a turning point for Turkish tourism
and that it also celebrated its “Silver Anniversary” along
with Hilton.
Demirel added that Hilton had made important contributions to the development of the country and the provision of foreign funds by bringing in 356 million dollars
in those 25 years. According to Demirel, Hilton Istanbul
was a school and an institution that shaped the industry.
Hilton Istanbul was included in The 300 Best Hotels in the
World, edited by René Lecler in 1980. Harper’s & Queen
selected Hilton Istanbul as one of the two best hotels of
the Hilton chain. The same magazine picked Hilton as the
restaurant for the best dinner in İstanbul.
Hilton offered a priceless experience to those who wanted
to have a good time in İstanbul; it continued its success in
the following years and was selected numerous times as
the best hotel in İstanbul. In 2011, Travel & Leisure declared Hilton Istanbul as one of the best 500 hotels in the
world based on its reader experience survey.

Curt Strand, president of Hilton International, wrote the following concerning the 30th anniversary of Hilton Istanbul:
It is a great honor to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Hilton
Istanbul, one of the milestones in the development of Turkish tourism. During these 30 years, Hilton Istanbul hosted
nearly 5 million guests, who spent 450 million dollars in foreign currency and took with them only the happy memories
they shared with the warm people of this beautiful country.
In 1955, Hilton was still in its early infancy, just like Turkish
tourism. Hilton Istanbul was our third international hotel.
We had the good fortune to work with an architectural team
made up of Sedat Hakkı Eldem and Skidmore, Owings and
Merrill, who were among the most respected names of their
respective countries. The enthusiasm and excitement during
the opening were clear proof that our efforts had not been
in vain. Some of us carried furniture for days and nights,
emptying transport trucks. Our wives sewed pillows with
their own hands. Those of us old enough to remember the
opening will never forget these.

In the past 30 years, Hilton Istanbul underwent an expansion. Today, we have begun a new construction that will add
a further 100 rooms to the hotel. There is no greater achievement for a hotel than to undergo expansion twice. Being
able to undertake that expansion while staying faithful to
the original design is also a big architectural achievement
that makes all the hardship worthwhile.

Hilton İstanbul, 30. yılını 29 Haziran 1985 gecesi görkemli
bir partiyle kutladı. Gecenin yıldızı, kutlama için özel olarak Türkiye’ye gelen Amerikalı ünlü şarkıcı Eartha Kitt idi.
Eartha Kitt, Türkiye’ye ilk kez 1949 yılında gelmiş ve dönüşünde Amerika’ya Kâtibim şarkısıyla birlikte gitmişti.
Sezen Cumhur Önal’ın ifadesiyle “yıllarca, yedi iklimde
yankılanan” bu şarkısıyla büyük ün kazanan Kitt, Hilton’un 30. yıl kutlamasında da “Üsküdar’a karşı Kâtibim’i
okuyarak” gönülleri bir kez daha fethetmişti.
Üstelik Eartha Kitt, kendisini büyük şöhrete kavuşturan

Hilton Istanbul celebrated its 30th anniversary with an
impressive party on June 29, 1985. The star of the night
was the famous American singer Eartha Kitt, who had
been brought to Turkey especially for the occasion.
Eartha Kitt came to Turkey or the first time in 1949, going back to the States with the song Katibim (Uska Dara)
under her belt. In Sezen Cumhur Önal’s words, this song
that “echoed throughout the seven seas for years” brought
great fame to Kitt, and on Hilton’s 30th anniversary she
sang the song across from Üsküdar, winning over the
hearts of the audience.
In order to pay her dues to “Katibim Aziz” depicted in
the song, Eartha Kitt crossed over to Üsküdar the next
day and visited the grave of this famous gentleman from
Üsküdar. Kitt was unable to hold back her tears by the
side of the grave, telling the reporters, “It was thanks to
the Üsküdar song that I paid my bills!”
During the two-day anniversary program at Hilton,
ground was broken for a 100-room new building.

Hilton, center of important events
Hilton açılana kadar İstanbul’da büyük organizasyonlara
hakkıyla ev sahipliği yapacak bir mekân neredeyse yok
gibiydi. Katılımcıların hem konaklamasına hem de farklı
etkinliklerin gerçekleştirilmesine olanak sağlayan Hilton
İstanbul, bu sayede kentin ekonomisine canlılık getirmiş
ve benzer mekânlar yaratılmasına da öncülük etmişti.
1955’te düzenlenen Milletlerarası Kalkınma Bankası ve
Para Fonu Teşkilatı Kongresi; 1978’de Henry Ford II’nin
de katılımıyla gerçekleştirilen Koç-Ford işbirliğinin 50.
yıldönümü kutlamaları; İTÜ’nün 210’uncu, TRT’nin
25’inci, Hürriyet gazetesinin 50’inci ve Eczacıbaşı Grubu’nun 60’ıncı yıldönümleri; 1982’de düzenlenen Amerikan-Türk İşadamları Konferansı ve 1983 yılında gerçekleştirilen Avrupa Sanayiciler Yuvarlak Masası (European
Round Table - ERT), Hilton’un ev sahipliği yaptığı büyük
etkinliklerden bazılarıydı.
Ancak 1980’li yıllarda Türkiye’nin hızla dünyaya açılmasıyla, daha büyük organizasyonlar için daha geniş
mekânlara ihtiyaç doğdu. 1986 yılında hizmete giren Hilton Kongre ve Sergi Merkezi, işte bu ihtiyaca cevap vermek için atılmış bir adımdı. 3.000 kişi kapasiteli Kongre
Merkezi, o tarihten günümüze kadar fuarlardan konferanslara, festivallerden konserlere kadar pek çok etkinliğin adresi oldu.
Until Hilton, there was almost no venue in İstanbul that
could host big events. Hilton Istanbul offered accommodation for participants as well as a venue for different
types of events, breathing life into the economy of the city
and leading the way in the construction of similar centers.
The Congress of the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the International Monetary
Fund held in 1955; the celebrations for the 50th anniversary of the Koç-Ford collaboration in 1978, attended
by Henry Ford II; ITU’s 210th, TRT’s 25th, Hürriyet’s
50th and the Eczacıbaşı Group’s 60th anniversaries; the
American-Turkish Businessmen Conference in 1982 and
the European Round Table – ERT meeting in 1983 were
some of the big organizations held at Hilton.
After Turkey rapidly opened up to integrate with the rest
of the world in the 1980s, bigger venues for bigger organizations became necessary. The Hilton Convention and
Exhibition Center opened in 1986 was a step taken in this
direction. With a capacity of 3000 people, the Convention
Center hosted many events such as fairs, conferences, festivals, and concerts.

Samatya’da küçük bir esnaf meyhanesinde başlayan meslek hayatına, daha sonra Hilton İstanbul’da uzun yıllar
barmenlik ve bar yöneticiliği yaparak devam eden Vefa
Zat, 500’ü aşkın içki kokteylinin yapımını anlattığı Şerefe
adlı ilk kitabını 1988 yılında yayımladı.
Vefa Zat began his career at a small shopkeepers’ tavern
in Samatya, moving on to work as bartender and then as
bar manager at Hilton Istanbul, where he served for many
years. Zat published his first book Şerefe (Cheers) in 1988,
in which he gave his recipes for over 500 cocktails.
İstanbul’un gece hayatına damgasını vuran Hilton İstanbul, kentteki içki kültürünün gelişiminde de öncü bir
rol üstlenmişti. Her biri kendi öyküsünü barındıran otele özel birbirinden ilginç kokteyller, bu gelişimin başrol

Hilton Istanbul left its mark on the night life of the city,
and played a pioneering role in the development of the
city’s drinking culture. Each having a unique story, these
interesting cocktails were invented for the hotel, and
played a leading role in this development. Most of the
cocktails that became trendy for a period, such as “Great
Gatsby”, “Sexy Girl”, “Creamy Lollipop”, “Midnight Hot”,
“Dreamy Babydoll”, “Pink Lady”, “First Night”, and “Aloha” were created by Vefa Zat, who liked to offer his guests
authentic tastes according to the season.
Hilton’un en ilginç spesyalleri, hiç kuşkusuz “No Thank
You” ve “Why Not” kokteylleriydi. Bu kokteyllerin öyküsünü Vefa Zat anlatıyor:
Undoubtedly the most interesting special cocktails at Hilton were “No Thank You” and “Why Not.” Vefa Zat tells
their story:

“As the name indicates, ‘No Thank You’ was specifically prepared for foreign guests who did not like to spend too much.
When asked what they would have to drink, guests who
answered ‘No, thank you,’ were immediately served this
drink. When they objected, we would say, ‘But you asked
for a “No Thank You.”’ If they continued to object, we offered them the ‘Why Not’ cocktail. The dialogue would soon
turn friendly, and the guest always had the cocktail they
were served.”

Hilton İstanbul’da görev yaptığı süreyi hayatının en kıymetli anıları arasında saklayan yöneticilerden biri de,
1992-1997 yılları arasında otelin genel müdürlüğünü
yapan Rico de Schepper’di. De Schepper’i İstanbul’a geldiğinde en çok etkileyen şeylerden biri, oteli çevreleyen
müthiş bahçe olmuştu. Hilton İstanbul’un açılışında dikilen 80 farklı türdeki ağaçlar zamanla büyümüş, oteli adeta
bir cennet halkasının içine almıştı. Özellikle Nisan ayında
dallarını çiçeklerle donatan manolyalar, gerçekten eşsiz
bir görüntü oluşturuyordu.
One of the directors who regard the memories of the years
they served at Hilton among the most precious of their
lives is Rico de Schepper, who was the general manager
of the hotel between 1992 and 1997. One of the things
that impressed de Schepper the most when he arrived in
İstanbul was the gorgeous garden surrounding the hotel.
The 80 different kind of trees planted at the opening of
Hilton Istanbul had grown and created a veritable circle
of heaven around the hotel. Especially the magnolias
blooming in April created a breathtaking view.
De Schepper’e göre Hilton İstanbul, 1950’li yıllardan sonra kentte adeta patlama yaşayan otelcilik sektörü için gerçek bir okul olmuş ve bu yönüyle Türk turizmine önemli
katkılar sağlamıştı. Hilton İstanbul’da yetişen personel,
burada kazandığı deneyimi Türkiye’deki başka otellere de
taşıdığı gibi, uluslararası Hilton zinciri içinde de çok iyi
noktalara gelmişti.
According to de Schepper, Hilton Istanbul had been a
true vocational school for the tourism sector, which had
exploded after the 1950s, making significant contributions to Turkish tourism. The personnel trained at Hilton
took their experience to other hotels in Turkey, while also
rising to prominent positions within the international
Hilton chain.

The personnel at Hilton Istanbul were always successful
at creating a close dialogue with the guests and treating
them with the warmth of Turkish hospitality; according
to de Schepper, they also brought a creative aspect to their

The small battery-powered light placed under the glass
bowl used to serve fruit slices over ice gave the ice cubes
a mysterious appearance at the Roof Rotisserie. Guests
would be surprised at seeing something they had never
encountered before in their lives, and the waiters would
tell them that this ice was brought in specially from the
North Pole in black sacks and that when the sacks were
opened, the Northern Lights radiated from this ice. This
made for fun banter between the guests and the waiters.

ardından Hilton, 1974 Dünya Güzellik Kraliçesi Helen
Morgan, 1992 yılında ünlü top model Elle Macpherson
ve 1993 yılında dünyanın en pahalı mankeni Claudia
Schiffer’ın nefes kesen güzelliğiyle İstanbulluların başını
döndürecekti.
Fakat Schiffer’in basın mensuplarına önceden söz verdiği gibi mayolu poz vermekten son anda vazgeçmesi, onu
saatlerce bekleyen foto muhabirleri için büyük bir hayal
kırıklığı olacaktı.
Held at Hilton Istanbul on May 14, the show was indeed
of the “eye-opening” kind, demonstrating how “things are
done around the world.” After the famous model, Hilton
invited Miss Universe 1974 Helen Morgan, the famous
top model Elle Macpherson in 1992, and the most expensive top model of the world Claudia Schiffer in 1993, all
blowing the minds of Istanbulites.
Schiffer greatly disappointed the photo-reporters, however, when she declined at the last moment to pose with
her bathing suit, after they had waited for hours.

Binanın tüm projesini Amerikalılar yaptı. Tesisat, Amerikan normlarına göre dizayn edildi. Mesela, biz o zaman
kabloları geçirmek için ince sac borular kullanırdık. Amerikalılar galvaniz boru kullandılar. Çok pahalı bir tesisat.
Ama Hilton’un elektrik tesisatının bugüne kadar hiç bozulmamasının da sebebi o.

Ben arada kaç kez gittim, “Bir şikâyetiniz var mı?” diye. Ne
bir şey bozuldu, ne bir tamir ihtiyacı oldu. Tesisat o kadar
kaliteliydi ki her şey ilk günkü gibi çalışıyor, aradan o kadar
zaman geçmesine rağmen.
In 1994, Hilton Istanbul underwent extensive renovation.
All the rooms were renewed as well as the infrastructure.
Arnold Hornfeld, who represented Siemens and was personally involved in all aspects of the renovation process
as well as the initial construction of the hotel, says the
following about construction quality:
For its day, Hilton was a very spacious and unique building
in terms of its architecture. I used to go there several times
a week to oversee the execution of work plans and the assembly. You cannot imagine what Turkey was like in the
1950s. It was impossible to get decent material. Hilton was
the first to import all construction materials. Siemens had
been charged with electrical installation, and the necessary
personnel was brought in from Germany.
All design projects were done by the Americans. The installation was designed according to American norms. For example, we used to pass cables through small diameter iron
pipes, but the Americans used galvanized pipes.. It was
much more expensive. But that’s the reason why Hilton’s
electrical installation has never failed to this day.
I went back numerous times to check if they had any complaints. Nothing broke down, no repairs were necessary.
The installation was of such high quality that everything
works like on the first day, despite all these years.

Türkiye, “kongre turizmi” kavramıyla ciddi anlamda ilk
kez 1996 yılında, İstanbul’daki Habitat II Konferansı’yla
tanıştı. Ağırlıklı olarak Lütfü Kırdar’da gerçekleştirilen
ve dünyanın en geniş katılımlı etkinliklerinden biri olan
Habitat, İstanbul ve Türkiye’nin uluslararası organizasyon
deneyimi açısından bir dönüm noktası oldu.
Turkey got acquainted with the concept of “congress
tourism” for the first time in 1996 with the Habitat II
Conference held in İstanbul. One of the world’s most extensive organizations and held mainly at the Lütfi Kırdar
Convention Center, Habitat proved to be a turning point
for Turkey’s experience in international events.
Birleşmiş Milletler İnsan Yerleşimleri Konferansı (Habitat), herkese yeterli konut sağlanması ve sürdürülebilir
insan yerleşmelerinin geliştirilmesi konularında ülkeler

Bu yöndeki ilk konferans 1976’da Vancouver’da toplanmıştı. 20 yıl aradan sonra İstanbul’da düzenlenen Habitat
II’ye ise ilgi çok daha yüksekti. 3-14 Haziran 1996 tarihleri arasında gerçekleştirilen konferansa dünyanın dört bir
köşesinden 25 bin kişi katıldı. İstanbul, tek bir organizasyon çerçevesinde, ilk kez bu kadar büyük bir kalabalığa
sahne oluyordu.
The first such conference was held in Vancouver in 1976.
After an interval of 20 years, Habitat II in İstanbul attracted a much higher level of interest. Held between June
3 and 14, 1996, the conference was attended by 25,000
people from around the world. This was the first time
İstanbul was facing such a big mass for a single event.
Konferans süresince Hilton İstanbul, binlerce kişiyi ağırladı. Etkinliklerin resmi adreslerinden biri olan Hilton

Throughout the conference, Hilton Istanbul hosted thousands of people. Hilton Convention Center was one of

The past 60 years of Hilton Istanbul have been a veritable
hall of fame... Hilton’s guests have come from all walks of
life and from every nation on earth - Hollywood stars, famous musicians, politicians, businessmen, scientists, and

some had dinner, and some rested in the lobby for a while
and went their own ways. All, however, were met with the
highest degree of Hilton’s hospitality.

The first such guest of world renown was King Faisal II
of Iraq, who paid an official visit to Turkey in 1955. Then
paths of Queen Zeyn, mother of King Hussein of Jordan,
Prince Hassan and Princess Basha; the Egyptian Princess
Hanzade, member of the Ottoman dynasty; the ex-wife
of King Hussein of Jordan, Queen Dina, and Charles de
Gaulle, President of France, crossed at Hilton Istanbul.

In 2004, US President George W. Bush came to İstanbul
for the NATO Summit, and met religious leaders of the
world at Hilton. The meeting was followed closely by the
whole world, proving that Turkey was a true mosaic of
faiths and cultures.

Hilton İstanbul’un 50. yılının kutlandığı 2005, otelin Doğan Grubu’na satışının gerçekleştirildiği bir yıl olarak da
tarihteki yerini aldı. Gençliğinde eşine verdiği “Hilton’da
düğün” sözünü tutamayan Aydın Doğan’ın en büyük hayallerinden biri, Hilton İstanbul’u şirketleri adına değil,
ailesi adına satın almasıyla gerçeğe dönüştü. Hilton’un
kendisi için asıl öneminin temsil ettiği değerler olduğunu
belirten Doğan, satın alma süreci sonrasındaki duygularını şöyle açıklıyordu:
Hilton’a hiçbir zaman herhangi bir otel gözüyle bakmadım.
Beni asıl cezbeden, Hilton İstanbul’un temsil ettiği değerler

2005 marked the 50th anniversary of Hilton Istanbul as
well as the year it was bought by Doğan Group. Buying
Hilton Istanbul had been one of the greatest dreams of
Aydın Doğan, the President of Doğan Group, who had
been unable to keep his promise to his bride for a “Hilton wedding.” The dream came true when he bought it
not for his companies but for his family. Doğan said for
him the real importance of Hilton was the values it represented, and expressed his feelings in the aftermath of the
purchase as follows:
I never saw Hilton as an ordinary hotel. What really attracted me were the values Hilton Istanbul represented and
the novelties it brought to Turkey. Hilton Istanbul is truly
the representative and pioneer of many a “first” in Turkey.
In a sense it was the harbinger of the “hotel management
revolution” in İstanbul and in Turkey in general. Hilton
Istanbul brought a whole new set of standards to Turkey.
It became the face of modern and Western Turkey. Hilton
Istanbul is the brand name that best symbolizes the concept
of modern Turkey.
We focused on not only what we stand to gain in cooperating with this strong brand name, but also on the local
values we could add to it. A beautiful synthesis emerged. I
see it as the greatest responsibility to preserve this synthesis
and to adapt it to new needs. In every country there are
monumental works that bear witness to its history. Hilton
Istanbul is one such monument. It is, in a sense, the living
witness of our recent history. The spirit of this hotel contains
the history of Turkey.
We are well aware of the importance and responsibility of
preserving this monument and to pass it on to future generations. Hilton Istanbul’s future will be as ambitious as the
brilliance of its past.

Conrad Hilton, Be My Guest adlı kitabında, özünde insanlara hizmet anlayışının olduğu otelciliğin, doğası gereği sosyal sorumluluk içeren bir meslek olduğunu söyler.
Hilton İstanbul, işte kurucusunun bu görüşü doğrultusunda, kurulduğu ilk günden bu yana toplumun yararını
gözeten projelerde yer almayı ve özellikle çocuklara yönelik etkinlikler yoluyla, geleceğin inşa edilmesinde üzerine
düşeni yapmayı toplumsal bir borç olarak benimsedi.
In his book entitled Be My Guest, Conrad Hilton writes
that in essence, hotel management aims to serve people,
and as such, is an occupation of social responsibility
by nature. Hilton Istanbul has endorsed the view of its
founder since the first day and has seen it as a social obligation to take part in projects for the social good and to
do its part in shaping the future, especially through events
aimed at children.

On 11 June 1955, just one day after Hilton Istanbul opened
its doors, the first ball to be held at the hotel was for the
benefit of the Red Crescent, which was an indication of
this approach. The collaboration between the two institutions continued years later with the campaign entitled
“A Small Contribution, A Big Difference.” Hilton Istanbul was instrumental in collecting donations for the Red
Crescent with the projects it carried out between 2011 and
2014, such as “Love Bundle” and “You Are Very Special.”
Her 23 Nisan’da düzenlenen baloda elde edilen gelirle çocuklara burs verilmesi ve kimsesiz çocuklar yararına özel
etkinlikler düzenlenmesi, yine aynı anlayışın devamıydı.
Çocuklara yönelik çalışmalara sonraki yıllarda SOS Çocuk Köyü’nün kurulmasına verilen destek; Bir Dilek Tut
Derneği, Aile Eğitim Derneği, Rotary Vakfı, TOÇEV ve
TEGV gibi kuruluşlarla gerçekleştirilen çok yönlü işbirlikleri; emniyet mensuplarının yetim çocuklarına yapılan
bağışlar ve son olarak Düşler Mutfağı ile yapılan işbirliği
izledi. Bu gibi etkinlikler, Hilton çalışanlarının katkılarıyla daha da zenginleşti.

Hilton İstanbul’un, ilk kez 2007 yılında Lösemili Çocuklar Vakfı’yla (LÖSEV) ortak düzenlemeye başladığı yılbaşı partileri ise, bir gelenek olarak halen devam ediyor.
Çocuklar, gönüllerince eğlendikleri bir günün ardından,
yılbaşı hediyeleri ve pastalarıyla yeni bir yıla girmenin sevincini Hilton’la paylaşıyor.
Similarly, balls were organized on every 23 April and the
proceeds were used to fund scholarships for children, and
special events were organized for homeless children. In
later years, these were followed by the support given to
the SOS Children’s Village; the multi-faceted collaborations with Make a Wish Association, the Family Education Association, the Rotary Foundation, the Foundation
for Educating Children (TOÇEV) and the Educational
Volunteers Foundation of Turkey (TEGV); the donations
made for the orphaned children of police forces and finally the collaboration with the Dream Kitchen.
Hilton’s New Year balls, organized together with the Foundation for Children with Leukemia (LÖSEV), have now
become a tradition. Children spend a day filled with fun
activities and share with Hilton the happiness of starting a
new year with presents and cakes.

“Hayatımın en mutlu anıymış, bilmiyordum” diye başlayan, gerçek ve kurgunun kesiştiği bir aşk öyküsünün en

oldu. Nobel Edebiyat Ödülü sahibi usta yazar Orhan Pamuk’un Masumiyet Müzesi adlı romanının Hilton’da geçen bölümleri, Hilton’un ve Türkiye’nin sosyal tarihinin
de birer canlandırması adeta.
“I didn’t know then that this was the happiest moment of
my life,” is how a love story begins at the intersection of reality and fiction, and Hilton Istanbul was one of the most
special and lively places in it. Written by the famous master novelist Orhan Pamuk, The Museum of Innocence has
parts that take place at Hilton, and they read as the veritable enaction of the social history of Hilton and Turkey.

Conrad Hilton (Connie) was listing his clear goals once
again in his self-confident and determined style. He
wanted Don Draper, who had worked miracles with the
local ad campaign, to direct the global campaign for all
the Hilton hotels and help him bring the America to the
world. Don, whom Connie saw “as a son,” created a successful campaign but did not use the idea of the “Lunar
Hilton” project, Conrad Hilton was disillusioned. “When
I say I want the moon, I want the Moon!” he said, turning
around and leaving the room, signaling that he no longer
cared for Don.

bırakmıştı. Yarım asırdan fazla süredir Türkiye’nin sosyal
hayatına damgasını vuran otelin 55. yıl kutlamaları, adına
yaraşır derecede görkemli oldu.
In 2010, Hilton Istanbul left its 55th year behind. The anniversary celebrations of the hotel, which had left its mark
in Turkey’s social life for more than half a century, was
duly magnificent.
Hilton İstanbul, 2010 yılında Avrupa Kültür Başkenti olan
İstanbul’da, 55 yıllık dostlarıyla yeni yaşını kutladı. Bu
özel gecenin değerli konukları arasında Hilton Worldwide
CEO’su Christopher Nassetta, dönemin Kültür ve Turizm
Bakanı Ertuğrul Günay, Sabancı Holding Yönetim Kurulu
Başkanı Güler Sabancı, Sezen Cumhur Önal gibi iş, siyaset

Hilton Istanbul celebrated its anniversary with its friends
for 55 years, in a city that had been selected as European
Capital of Culture in 2010. On this special night, the list
of valuable guests included prominent names from business, politics, and the art world, such as Christopher Nassetta, CEO of Hilton Worldwide, Ertuğrul Günay, Minister of Culture and Tourism, Güler Sabancı, President of
the Board of Sabancı Holding, and Sezen Cumhur Önal.
Kutlamalar çerçevesinde gerçekleştirilen renkli etkinliklerden biri Rahmi Koç Müzesi’nden getirilen klasik otomobillerin otelin bahçesinde sergilenmesiydi. 55. yıl etkinlikleri kapsamında, Hilton İstanbul’un Anı Defterinden
55 Yıl kitabı da okuyucularla buluştu. Kuruluşundan 2010
yılına, İstanbul ve Türkiye’nin modernleşme serüveni içinde kendine geniş bir yer edinmiş olan otelin, ince detaylara
değinerek dolu dolu geçen 55 yıllık öyküsünün anlatıldığı
kitabın hazırlanması için Hilton İstanbul’un dostlarına ve
konuklarına yaptığı çağrı karşılığını buldu. Hilton İstanbul’un tarihi büyük bir arşivde toplandı. Birbirinden renkli
anıların ve görsellerin toplandığı arşiv dışında basın taraması ve sözlü tarih görüşmeleri de gerçekleştirildi. Hummalı bir araştırma evresinin sonunda hazırlanan kitap,
sayfaları arasında gezinenlerin duygu dolu hatıralarını
canlandırarak, Hilton İstanbul’un 55. yılının en anlamlı
çalışmalarından biri oldu.
One of the colorful events that constituted part of the
celebrations was the exhibition of classical automobiles
brought from the Rahmi Koç Museum to the garden of
the hotel. Selections from the honor book of Hilton Hotel
was made into a book. Hilton Istanbul’s call to its friends
and guests for the preparation of the book that would tell
the 55-year story of the hotel was met with enthusiasm.
Hilton Istanbul’s history was brought together in a sizeable archive. In addition to the archive, where colorful
memories and visual material were gathered, interviews
were conducted and press archives were examined. The
fruit of extensive research, the book brought back to life
the sentimental memories of its readers and constituted
one of the most meaningful works for the 55th anniversary of the hotel.

Hilton İstanbul, geçmişte olduğu gibi günümüzde de
her yelpazede etkinliklere ev sahipliği yapmaya devam
ediyor. Bu etkinlikler, uluslararası kongrelerden konferanslara, bilimsel toplantılardan festivallere kadar büyük

Konferansı, 25 Mayıs 2012’de dönemin Başbakanı Recep
Tayyip Erdoğan tarafından Convention Center’da açıldı.
Hilton İstanbul’un son yıllarda ağırladığı etkinliklerin en
önemlilerinden biri, 2013 yılında 29’uncusu düzenlenen
İslam İşbirliği Teşkilatı Ekonomik ve Ticari İşbirliği Daimi Kongresi’ydi. İslam dünyasını başbakanlar düzeyinde

Son yıllara damgasını vuran en renkli etkinlik ise, hiç kuşkusuz 2015 baharında düzenlenen İstanbul Uluslararası
Dans Festivali’ydi. 80 dans grubunun akşamları gösteriler sergilediği, gündüzleri Latin dansları, tango, flamenko, swing, jazz, hip hop, oryantal, zeybek-harmandalı ve
sirtaki gibi türlerde dansların öğretildiği, dünyaca ünlü
dansçılarla aynı sahneyi paylaşma imkânının sunulduğu
festival, İstanbullulara 5 gün 5 gece dansla dolu muhteşem anlar yaşattı. Festivale Amerika’dan Çin’e, Avrupa’dan
Asya’ya, dünyanın dört bir yanından 5.000 amatör ve profesyonel dansçı katıldı.

always has, such as international congresses and conferences, scientific gatherings, and festivals.
United Nations International Conference on Population
and Development was held at the Convention Center and
opened by Prime Minister Tayyip Erdoğan on May 25,
2012.
One of the most important events hosted by Hilton Istanbul in recent years was the 29th Congress of the Standing
Committee for Economic and Commercial Cooperation
of the Organization of the Islamic Cooperation held in
2013. The keynote speaker of this important meeting that
brought together the prime ministers of the Islamic world
was President Abdullah Gül.
Similarly, the Turkish-Japanese Business Forum, organized to commemorate the 90th year of diplomatic relations between the two countries, was held at Hilton Conress Center in 2014, drawing a large attendance.
The most colorful event of recent years was undoubtedly the Istanbul International Dance Festival held in the
spring of 2015. Over 80 dance groups performed during the night, while during the day workshops were held
to teach Latin dances, tango, flamenco, swing, jazz, hip
hop, oriental, zeybek-harmandalı and sirtaki. The festival offered the opportunity to share the stage with worldfamous dancers and five amazing days and nights filled
with dance. 5,000 amateur and professional dancers from
all over the world, from the United States to China and
from Europe to Asia, attended the festival.

İstanbul’s Hilton
İstanbul’un modern hayata geçmesinin sembollerinden
biri olan ve 1955 yılında İstanbul Hilton markasıyla kurulan otelin adı birden fazla defa değişse de, şehre ve ona
ait insanların yaşamlarına dokunuşu hiçbir zaman değişmedi. İstanbul Hilton, İkinci Dünya Savaşı’nın ardından
Avrupa’da sıfırdan inşa edilen ilk modern otel olma özelliğini taşıyordu.
One of the symbols of İstanbul’s transition to modern life,
the hotel was opened in 1955 under the name of Istanbul
Hilton, and even though its name was changed more than
once through the years, the way it touched the city and
the lives of its inhabitants never changed. Istanbul Hilton
was the first modern hotel built in Europe after the Second World War.
2000’li yıllara gelindiğinde Hilton, bütün dünyaya yayılmış dev bir oteller zinciri haline gelmişti. Tüm dünyadaki
otelleri arasında marka standardını sağlayabilmek için
Hilton adı öne taşındı. Böylece İstanbul Hilton’un adı
Hilton İstanbul olarak değiştirildi. Bir diğer isim değişikliği ise 2014 yılında yapıldı. İstanbul’da Hilton Worldwide
markasını taşıyan otellerin çoğalmasıyla birlikte yeni bir
isim ihtiyacı doğdu. İstanbul Boğazı’na en yakın Hilton
olması, mimarisinin bacalarıyla Boğaz’da süzülen bir gemiye benzemesi ve Conrad Hilton’un İstanbul’dan bahsederken “City of Bosphorus” tanımını kullanmış olması
Hilton İstanbul’un yeni adını belirledi: Hilton İstanbul
Bosphorus.
By the 2000s, Hilton had become a giant hotel chain extending all over the world. In order to create standard
branding, the name Hilton was moved to the front. Thus,
the name of Istanbul Hilton became Hilton Istanbul. Another change was implemented in 2014. The increase in
the number of Hilton Worldwide hotels in İstanbul necessitated finding a new name. Because it was the Hilton
hotel closest to the Bosphorus, looked like a ship sailing
through the straits and because Conrad Hilton had said
“the City of Bosphorus” while talking about İstanbul, the
new name of the hotel became Hilton Istanbul Bosphorus.
2015 yılında 60. yaşını kutlayan Hilton İstanbul Bosphorus, geçmişine bir reverans yaparak kuruluş adı olan
İstanbul Hilton logosunu kutlamalar çerçevesindeki etkinliklerine taşıdı.
Yaşlanmadan yaş alan otel, kurulduğu kadim şehir gibi
dönem dönem isim değiştirse de, ilk açıldığı günkü heyecanından ve misafirperverliğinden bir şey kaybetmeyerek, en özel anların ve anıların ev sahipliğini yapmaya
devam edecek.

Hilton Istanbul Bosphorus celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2015, and as a salute to its past, used the Istanbul
Hilton logo in the events organized for the celebrations.
Advancing through the years without aging, the hotel
changed its name just as the ancient city that hosted it,
never losing the excitement and hospitality of the day it
first opened; it will continue to be the host of the most
special moments and memories.

Hilton and Turkish journalism
1955 yılından bu yana Türkiye’nin modernleşme serüveninde yer almış olan Hilton’un Türkiye’deki gazetecilik
üzerine olan etkilerini Altan Öymen anlattı:
Altan Öymen tells the following story regarding the effect
on Turkish journalism by Hilton, which has been part of
Turkey’s history of modernization since 1955:
Hilton, 1955 yılının Haziran’ında açıldı. Ama o zamana
kadar iki-üç sene boyunca hep Hilton’dan bahsedildi. Gazetelerde yayınlanıp duruyordu. Sık sık haberler çıkıyordu.
Günün birinde geldiler. Conrad Hilton’un da aralarında
bulunduğu bir grup Yeşilköy Havaalanı’na indi. Kendi
kitabımda da bir bölüm ayırdım, çünkü 1955 yılını anlatırken yılın en önemli birkaç olayından biriydi Hilton’un
açılışı.
Hilton opened in June 1955, but until then, it remained
a conversation topic for two or three years. It was always
in the papers. There were recurrent reports. One day they
came. A group of people with Conrad Hilton among them
landed in Yeşilköy Airport. I wrote a chapter about this in
my own book, because Hilton’s opening was one of the few
important incidents of 1955.
Hilton adının getirdiği başka şeyler de var. Bir tanesi biz
gazetecileri yakından ilgilendiriyordu. 1950’li yıllarda,
1955’ten sonra özellikle, gazetecilerin bir kısmı haklarında
açılan basın davaları dolayısıyla hapsediliyorlardı. Hapsedilenlerin Ankara’da olanlarını, Ankara Cezaevi’nin daha
iyice bir odasına koymuşlardı. Öteki odalarda olmayan
yazı masası gibi şeyler de vardı. Yatakları daha iyiydi galiba. Oraya “Ankara Hilton” adı verildi. Sohbetlerde “Ne zaman çıkacak Hilton’dan?” veya “Hilton’a ne zaman gidiyorsun?” dendiği zaman, bunun hapse gidiş veya hapisten geliş
olduğu anlaşılırdı. Çok yaygın oldu bu. Gazetelerde “Hilton’da kalıyorlar” gibi haber başlıklarında da görülür bu.
Altan Öymen
İstanbul’da ise “Hilton muhabirliği” diye bir şey vardı. Şehre gidip gelenler izlenir tabii gazeteciler tarafından. Birçok
gazetenin matbaaları zaten burada. Hilton açıldıktan sonra bu çeşit muhabirliğin merkezi Hilton Oteli oldu. O gazetecilerin adı da “Hilton muhabiri”ne çıktı. Beni de burada
misafir ederlerdi. “Hilton Birliği” adı altında hem gelene gidene ait haberleri toplayan muhabirler gelir, aynı zamanda
bir siyasi muhabirlik de olurdu. Çünkü gelenlerin bir kısmı
siyasi demeçler verirlerdi.
There are other things about the name Hilton. One of them
involves us journalists. In the 50s and especially after 1955,
some journalists were being put into prison as a result of the
charges brought against them. Those in Ankara were placed
in one of the relatively better cells of the Ankara Prison. It
had things the other cells did not, like a desk. I think the
beds were better, too. That cell came to be called “Ankara
Hilton.” So when someone said in conversation, “When will
he leave Hilton?” or “When are you going to Hilton?” they
meant prison. This became a very widespread usage. Even
papers had headlines like “They are staying at Hilton.”
In İstanbul, there was a special type of reporting called
“Hilton reporting.” Reporters naturally followed visitors
coming to İstanbul. Many papers had their printers here.
After Hilton was opened, it became the center of that kind
of reporting. Those reporters were called “Hilton reporters.”
I used to stay there, too. There was a “Hilton Union” that
brought together reporters following visitors, but also political reporters, because some of those visitors would make
political statements.

Misafirlerine ve topluma duyarlı bir yaklaşımla hizmet
vermeyi misyon edinen Hilton İstanbul Bosphorus, aynı
şekilde çevreye gösterdiği duyarlılıkla da 2015 yılında
Kültür ve Turizm Bakanlığı tarafından verilen Yeşil Yıldız
sertifikasına layık görüldü.
Çevreye Duyarlı Tesis (Yeşil Yıldız) Belgesi, “sürdürülebilir turizm” kapsamında, çevrenin korunması ve çevre
bilincinin gelişmesi amacını taşıyan konaklama tesislerine veriliyor.
Hilton İstanbul Bosphorus, Hilton Worldwide otellerinin
uyguladığı LightStay Sürdürülebilirlik Programı ile paralel olarak, su ve enerji kullanımında tasarruf sağlanması,
çevreye zararlı maddelerin ve atık miktarının azaltılması,
enerji verimliliğini artıran uygulamaların hayata geçirilmesi ve çalışanlarıyla misafirlerinin bu konularda bilgilendirilmesi gibi alanlarda gerçekleştirdiği çalışmalarla
Yeşil Yıldız’ı almaya hak kazandı.

Hilton İstanbul Bosphorus “Gri Su Projesi”ni Türkiye’de
uygulayan ilk beş yıldızlı otel. Gri Su Projesi, duş, küvet,
lavabo gibi alanlarda kullanılan suyun arıtılarak, bahçe
sulamasında ve benzeri alanlarda kullanılmasını hedefleyen çevreci bir çözüm. Ayrıca personelin çevreye duyarlılığının artırılması ve bilinçlendirilmesi amacıyla, internet
üzerinden “eco-learning” eğitim programı uygulanıyor.
Tüm dünyada bu programı izleyen Hilton Worldwide
otelleri, her yıl düzenlenen çevreye duyarlılık ödül ve değerlendirme kampanyası Eco-Rewards’a katılıyor. Bunun
yanı sıra her üç ayda bir çevre koruma organizasyonlarından birine destek veren Hilton İstanbul Bosphorus, misafirlerinin de bu etkinliklere katılmasını teşvik ediyor. Tüm
bu çalışmaların yanı sıra kent merkezinde yeşil alanlara
sahip çıkan Hilton İstanbul Bosphorus’un bahçesinde 575
adet ağaç bulunuyor.
Hilton Istanbul Bosphorus aims to be sensitive in serving
its guests and society as a whole, and was awarded the
Green Star Certificate for its environmental sensitivity by
the Ministry of Culture and Tourism in 2015.
The Environmentally Sensitive Facility (Green Star) Certificate is given to facilities that aim to protect nature and
develop environmental consciousness as part of “sustainable tourism.”
In tandem with the LightStay Sustainability Program by
Hilton Worldwide, Hilton Istanbul Bosphorus qualified
for the Green Star with its efforts for more efficient use of
water and electricity, reduction in environmentally harmful material and wastes, implementing procedures that
increase energy efficiency, and informing its employees
and guests about these issues.
Hilton Istanbul Bosphorus is the first five-star hotel in
Turley to have undertaken the “Gray Water Project,”
which is an environmentally friendly solution that aims
to purify the water used in showers, bathtubs, and sinks
for re-use in garden irrigation and the like. In addition,
an online “eco-learning” training program is offered to
increase the environmental sensitivity and consciousness of the personnel. All of the Hilton Worldwide hotels
implement this program and participate in the annual
Eco-Rewards, a campaign that evaluates and awards environmental sensitivity. Hilton Istanbul Bosphorus quarterly supports an environment protection organization
and encourages its guests to participate in these events. In
addition, Hilton Istanbul Bosphorus protects green areas
in the city and has 575 trees in its garden.

The legacy of 60 years
Hilton İstanbul Bosphorus, bundan 60 yıl önce Conrad
Hilton tarafından belirlenen ilkeler ve idealler doğrultusunda, kesintisiz hizmet vermeye devam ediyor. Conrad
Hilton’un, oteli bir barış ve dostluk merkezi haline getirmeye yönelik fikirlerinin evrensel geçerliliği, 2015 yılında
İstanbul’a gelen torunu Steven M. Hilton tarafından da
şöyle dile getiriliyor:
Uluslararası Ticaret ve Seyahat Yoluyla Dünya Barışı” kurumsal hedefi doğrultusunda dedem Conrad Hilton, farklı kültürlerden insanları bir araya getirmek ve ekonomik
gelişme ile turizmi teşvik etmek amacıyla zamanının en
büyük uluslararası oteller zincirini kurmuştu. Hilton İstanbul Bosphorus, bunun ilk halkalarındandı. Altmış yıl
sonra, dünyanın kesişme noktasında, büyükbabamın kendi
sözleriyle “birçok milletten iyi niyetli insanların bir araya
gelip barış dilini konuşabilecekleri bir dostluk merkezi yaratmak” amacıyla hayata geçirdiği bu ikonik oteli ziyaret
etmekten büyük heyecan duyuyorum.
Hilton Istanbul Bosphorus continues to serve unabatedly,
following the principles and ideals set out by Conrad Hilton 60 years ago. The universal appeal of Conrad Hilton’s
ideas of making the hotel a center for peace and friendship is expressed by his grandson Steven M. Hilton, who
visited İstanbul in 2015, in the following words:
My grandfather Conrad Hilton created the biggest international hotel chain of his time in order to bring together
people of different cultures and to promote tourism through
economic development. Hilton Istanbul Bosphorus was one
of the first links of this chain. Sixty years later, at the intersection point of the world, I am greatly excited to visit this iconic
hotel that my grandfather built, in his own words, “to create
a center for friendship where people of goodwill from many
nations can come together to speak the language of peace.”

60 years later, as young as the first day
İstanbul, kıtalar arası geçiş yolu, içinden deniz geçen bir
şehir. 8500 yaşında olduğu tahmin edilen bir kent burası. Her köşebaşı tarih kokan ama aynı zamanda genç,
dinamik, 24 saat yaşayan ve hiç durmadan dönüşen bir
metropol İstanbul. Hilton, Türkiye’nin yüzünü Batı’ya
döndüğü yıllarda sosyal hayatta modernleşmenin önünü
açan bir otel olarak ülke insanının hayatına girdi.
Kentin köklü tarihinden pek çok medeniyet gelip geçmiş... Gelen her medeniyet, ardında şehre damgasını
vuracak eserler bırakmış. İstanbul, Boğaz’ın kenarına,
tepesine, sağına, soluna, kuzeyine, güneyine, doğusuna,
batısına, ortasına yerleşmiş bu yapıların tümünü benimsemiş, sahiplenmiş ve kendine döndürmüş.
Galata Kulesi, Kız Kulesi, Aya Sofya, Sultanahmet Camii,
Topkapı Sarayı, Rumeli Hisarı gibi İstanbul Boğazı’na bakan, şehrin sembol binalarına 60 yıl önce Hilton eklendi.
Türkiye, bundan tam 60 yıl önce Hilton ile tanıştığında
gördü ki, bir otel sadece otel değildir. Bir otel aynı zamanda modanın, cemiyet hayatının, basının merkezi olabilir,
insanların yaşam biçimlerine yön verebilir. İstanbul’un
ölümsüz sembollerinin arasına katılmış olan otel de, içinde yer aldığı tarihi kentle arasındaki flörtü sürdürmeye
devam ettirecek.

İstanbul connects continents, and a sea passes through it.
This is a city estimated to be 8500 years old. A metropolis diffused with the scent of history in every corner, and
yet it is young and dynamic, it is up 24 hours a day, and
changes constantly. Hilton entered the lives of the Turkish people during the years when the country turned its
face to the West as a hotel that facilitated modernization
in social life.
Many civilizations have passed through this city’s history... Each civilization left behind it works that would bear
its mark. İstanbul embraced all these buildings that are
located by the Bosphorus, on the hills, to the right and
left, to its north, south, east, and west; it adopted them
and made them its own.
60 years ago, Hilton was added to the list of symbolic
buildings of the city that had a view of the Bosphorus
such as the Galata Tower, the Maiden Tower, Sultanahmet
Mosque, Topkapı Palace, and the Rumeli Fortress.
When Turkey met Hilton 60 years ago, it realized that a
hotel is never only a hotel. A hotel can also be the center of fashion, social life, and journalism; it can shape
people’s lifestyles. Taking its place among the immortal
symbols of İstanbul, this hotel will also continue to flirt
with the historical city in which it finds itself.
Hilton Istanbul Bosphorus celebrates its 60th anniversary, with the mission of being the ambassadors of Turkish
hospitality. We hope it will continue to be the address for
the most beautiful memories for decades to come...
