I know you’ll say that everybody adores their dad but my dad is special. The other day I caught dad redhanded. It wasn’t easy. I had to follow him secretly for a long time. I was always curious about how just as I finished reading one book, dad could appear with a new one. It seems that he was buying books and hiding them on the top shelf of the bookcase. Then when I was not looking he would take one from the bookshelf and bring it to me. The other day I saw him just as he was putting new books on the top shelf. I did not say anything. When dad went to work I looked at the books. They looked so inviting. It was as if they were calling out to me “Come on, read us.” I think one was “Keloglan,” a storybook about the famous Anatolian Turkish boy and his adventures. Another one was “Ancient Stories” and there were many more. I think there could have been a puzzle book somewhere there too. I was so curious. I was having dreams. In my dreams books would come in front of me opening their pages. Just when I came to the most exciting part the page would close. I would try to turn the page but I couldn’t. I woke up frustrated each time. 5 I couldn’t stand this anymore. In the end I found a solution. I pulled a chair in front of the bookcase. I put a few books on the chair and climbed on top of them. Now I could reach the books. I was reading them and then putting them back again. Every time dad came with a book that I had already read saying, “Zehra, sweetheart, I have a new book for you” I couldn't help but giggle. Dad is so sweet! One day at an unexpected moment, my method of getting to the books failed terribly. I was in a lot of pain. You will not believe it but I was crying and laughing at the same time. As usual I was trying to reach the top shelf of the bookcase by climbing on top of the chair with the books piled on top of it. One of the books underneath my feet must have slipped. Just as I was putting a book on the shelf I found myself on the floor. I was in pain. It was my shoulder. There were books scattered around the room. Some of the pages were open as if they were mocking me and saying, “Come on read us too.” 6
