A village, where the sea can be seen from the window or courtyard of nearly every house. A cute little place where the children roam free and safe on the streets and the mothers need only call their names to make themselves heard. Everyone knows one another there. Everyone has a nickname or they go by their ancestor’s name. We can never tell for sure if it is being born and bred there that makes us love this place, or if it is the beauty and tranquillity of the place itself. Just like we said; imagine a village where, whichever house you look out from, you can see the sea. The luxury of what we call “a house with views onto the sea” nowadays, of what raises the market value of the properties in the city is a natural occurrence there, and it is no luxury for us, the people of Gülpınar. This village has a scent of its own. It fills your lungs just as you enter the village. Some don’t like it but we yearn for it. You know what this is a blend of? It is a blend of cow dung and dust, and flowers that accompany them. Zeytincilik yapar genelde insanlar. The inhabitants mostly live from the olive groves. Come autumn, a frantic season of work starts in the village. Those who do not own land work as collectors on daily pay. These are generally women. Their hands have a hard skin, tough and grazed, and a bit dark because of the dirt. But it is no matter of complaint, for it is all for the bread. Work makes them happy. At night they sleep tired but peacefully. When the olive season is over people sit at home: it is winter, they slowly burn the wood from olive trees in their stoves and furnaces; again another beautiful perfume fills the air. They do embroidery and needlework; little by little chests are filled with dowry. Sometimes this needlework is so beautiful that women get envious of one another, they hide the patterns from each other. The patterns are their secret. Mothers want these to exist only in the chests of their own sons or daughters. Of course they are shown to some neighbours and close relatives: it is just a feminine sentiment, the wish for the work to be approved and admired. And thus, all the women in the village end up knowing about each other’s secret patterns. In fact they are no secret. Gülpınar is full of boundless opportunities for children. Every child has his/her secret place. The village is situated at the slope of a hill; where the houses end, the pastures that we used to call “the hills” start. You would find small ponds there, which we called “the puddles”. The villagers keep their flock over there. How fun it is to play there amidst the sticks and twigs, the green and the puddles. All sorts of games are made up, new ones invented. For instance there is the making of stone henna for the hands. How? In the hills you find green stuff that we only later on found out to be moss. This green stuff is spit on and dampened and then ground into a pulp by rubbing on a stone, which, later, is smeared onto the fingers and then the hands are stretched out to the sun to make the henna dry faster. When you wash it off you are left with the orange henna on your hands. When you get hungry while playing, you collect sheep’s sorrel from around the bushes, take a break and eat it there and then. Another favourite day is the day of baking bread. It is almost a ceremony. The frantic rush in the courtyard starts early in the morning. The oven is prepared; the dough is mixed, placed in trays and shoved into the oven. We, the children, wait for the bread to come out of the oven with spring onions in our hands, with some tomato paste and olive oil. The bread is sliced while it is still steaming, olive oil and some tomato paste is spread over it, with the spring onions in our hands. Pure delight, it is delicious! The screaming and shouting of the children come to a halt at that point for they are hard at work feeding themselves. All the basic needs of a child can be taken care of in Gülpınar; play, friendship, healthy organic food. The holidays in the village are something else. On religious holidays men go to the holiday prayer early in the morning, women and children prepare breakfast at home, wear their best clothes and wait for the men to come home. Relatives come to visit, neighbours come and you go to your neighbours. Children get loose after a while and go around to almost every house in the village to pay their respects to their elders. They come back with lots of candies, money and all sorts of finds. If the holiday is the feast of sacrifice, meat is offered as charity to the needy of the village. This again is a duty for the children. Everyone knows where everyone else lives anyway. The women of the village gather and sit at a place that we used to call “the bellows”. It is a relatively high place. Everyone has worn their best gowns. It is a place to gaze around; the word goes around in whispers and later on, the young men of the village initiate the folkloric dance. All skills are displayed, under the watchful eye of the young girls of the village. They exchange glances and it is here that many a romance begins. People take slow strolls on the street, in groups. Youngsters ramble with relatives, cousins and friends. And then you meet with the young lad that you have just been exchanging glances with, towards the end of the foot path. When you reach far enough that the mothers and fathers cannot see, you smile at one another and exchange a few words. Now they built a teahouse where there used to be the bellows. The women no longer sit there on holidays, and as there is no stage the young lads can dance there no more. So, romances must be lived somewhere else. Gülpınar’da, ayrıca hayvancılık ve zeytincilik In the beginning of the 90s, when our village was approved as a sub-district we already knew what archaeology was. The elderly thought good of both -becoming a sub-district and archaeology. Yet, we still called our Gülpınar a “village”. That was what we were used to. ortalık, rüzgar ve dalga sesi huzur verir orada The village learnt new things from the archaeologists who were frequenting the excavations at the Apollon Smintheion temple, an extension of Troy. The excavations also provided new job opportunities for the young people of the village. Our primary school was allocated to the archaeologists. The school that we knew by heart, every corner of which was adorned with many memories was now an “excavation house”. tayini ile 10-15 yaşlarında Çanakkale’ye giden ile uğraşılır. In Gülpınar there is also stock breeding and businesses based around olive production. Our olives are as prized as our cheese and yoghurt. Nowadays in olive business, the villagers are persuaded more and more towards organic agriculture. The olives are grown organically and the olive oil is extracted organically. When we were children life itself was organic. From the tomato paste that we ate, to the bread that was baked and the sheep’s sorrel that was collected, everything was organic. Of course the villagers haven’t turned their back on that kind of life yet. insana. Some of the olive orchards together with other fields are at Kumbağlar, 4 kilometres away from the village. Kumbağlar, by the seaside, is a place not yet discovered by city dwellers. There it is always windy, the sea wavy, but in the serenity and calm of the place the sounds of the wind and the waves bring you only tranquillity. Coming to Kumbağlar you are also greeted with a pleasant smell. It emanates from what we call the green weed. As you get closer you open the windows of the car and fill your lungs with this fresh odour. Our parents, both teachers in the village, were appointed to Çanakkale where we moved to at the age of 10-15, only in time to become lecturers at the university. But we never saw this as a separation. We visit our village whenever we get a chance. We did never; we could never leave it behind… We made every effort to be a part in all the activities taking place there, we want to offer everything that we can to the village, and one day we, as two sisters, want to make a stone house of our own in our courtyard and become teachers at the village school just like our parents did. To sustain the village and the generations to come. Çiğdem Ergun and Özlem Ergun* *Çiğdem Ergun teaches at 18 Mart University, Faculty of Education, Music Education Department and Özlem Ergun teaches at 18 Mart University, Faculty of Education, Physical Education and Sports Education Department. They have led the music and creative drama workshops at Meeting Point: Gülpınar. Buluşma Noktası, toplumsal, dini ve kültürel açıdan farklı toplulukları ve bireyleri sanat, yaratım ve kültür mirası konuları üzerinden ...olanlar the happening ortak sivil faaliyetler çerçevesinde birleştirmeyi amaçlayan uluslararası bir projedir. Proje, disiplinler ve kültürler arası faaliyetlerle Meeting Point is an international project aiming to gather communities and individuals with different social, religious and cultural backgrounds through the civilian activities of art, creativity and cultural heritage. Meeting Point is interested in using various creative art disciplines to harmonise differences, raising in an innovative manner an awareness of and respect for both the rights and duties of oneself and of others as well as the complementary nature of differences. It encourages individuals to rediscover the differences of both themselves and others through this awareness of complementarity. bireylerin kendilerinin ve başkalarının hak ve ödevlerinin farkına varmalarını sağlamayı ve “farklılıkların tamamlayıcılığını” vurgulamayı hedefler. Bunu da çeşitli sanatsal üretim güçlerini, sanatın zanaate dönüşmesine gerek kalmadığı, The Meeting Point aims to disrupt, at least for a short period of time, the chronically discriminatory, capitalist and monopolist attitudes, the status quo of our time. It plans to do this by transporting various creative forces of the art world from ‘the city’ -the current home of art- into smaller settlements. It encourages individuals from various metropoles of the world to leave behind their shields which they created to protect themselves from the mentioned attitudes. It is a project where the participants have come to inscribe the weeklong experience of the “I” in its pure form, perhaps the most important quality for artistic creation, in an environment where, with all prejudices are left behind at the city, they are in no need to prove themselves nor to compete. bu güçlerin varsayılan mekanı, evi olan ‘şehirden’ alıp daha küçük yerleşimlere götürerek gerçekleştirmeye çalışır. The project aims to give at the same time the inhabitants of smaller settlements a chance to experience the different personalities and expressions of foreigners, especially EU citizens, widely referred to by the media by way of politics, through getting to know some of them personally in daily life. The project also aims to generate at least a weeklong community where cross-cultural and inter-disciplinary experiences can be shared. An area that the project acts cautious about was the delicate border between making a place visible or attractive and deteriorating it through gentrification. There is always a great danger in raising the popularity and visibility of a certain place for it might ultimately lead to a semi-orientalistic invasion by city dwellers, causing the local inhabitants to sell their houses and move elsewhere. That is why at certain stages full visibility through the press was not favoured by the project. The first edition of the project brought international participants from France, Germany, Korea, The Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain, USA and Turkey together in Gülpınar (Çanakkale) with the guidance of Local Agenda 21. When you reach the most westerly point of Turkey after the never ending, winding and tiresome roads of the Aegean, you are greeted by the open minded, benevolent and kind inhabitants of Gülpınar. The village that has been given the status of district some 15 years ago, has had the necessary funding to establish a policlinic and a Regional Boarding School where the participants, artists of the festival and the project team stayed for the one week during of the project. A settlement mentioned in important historical documents from the Ancient Greece to the Ottoman Empire, Gülpınar, with the newly settled nomadic villages in its vicinity and with many other features we discovered during the stay, has proved to be a right choice of location as it supported the project’s idea of gathering differences and channelling them towards new artistic formations. The project had different but complementary paths to attain its goal. It had several workshops with different target and teaching groups. Meeting Point: Gülpınar acted as an education programme during the day and as a festival at night with its artistic activities and various workshops aiming at different age groups. The education programme, with its international participants and course leaders from abroad, Turkey and Gülpınar, comprised of three main and three complementary workshops . fotoğraf (Ahmet Polat, TR-NL), video (Thomas Büsch – Sabine Küper Büsch, DE) ve yerel mutfak (Koordinatör: Hasan Açanal, TR); tamamlayıcı atölyeler ise köy çocuklarının katılımı ile müzik (Çiğdem Ergun), yaratıcı drama (Özlem Ergun) ve karikatür (Mehmet Çağçağ, Tuncay Akgün ve Ramize Erer) çalışmalarından oluştu. Ece Pazarbaşı The main education programme, with its international participants, consisted of photography (Ahmet Polat, TR-NL), video (Thomas Büsch – Sabine Küper Büsch, DE) and local cuisine workshops (Coordinator: Hasan Açanal, TR) and the complementary workshops were music (Çiğdem Ergun), creative drama (Özlem Ergun) and caricature (Mehmet Çağçağ, Tuncay Akgün and Ramize Erer) with children from the village as participants. The complementary workshops were an important step towards turning the Meeting Point: Gülpınar into an intercultural dialogue rather than an urban monologue in a rural setting. Also, the local cuisine workshop taking place at the house of a different inhabitant of Gülpınar each day gave participants a chance to observe the daily life, the family structure and the culture of the village. The participants who were invited straight into the personal territories, homes of the residents of Gülpınar, were able to experience a close encounter with these people -people who used a different language, had a different faith, social status and race than their own. They had an understanding for an intimacy reaching beyond differences. I believe that Meeting Point: Gülpınar was a success in providing a space for learning, working, playing and spending time together while exchanging knowledge, and also in realising the possibility of living together at peace with the different cultures, beliefs and ways of thinking. The individual initiatives of the participants and the project team contributed immensely to the success of the project in establishing a dialogue with the village and the villagers. Throughout the project “eating and food” laid down the basis of sharing. This primal instinct of humankind is a very reliable tool in creating a common space and in gathering people around that space. We are considering to be there once more to diversify these tools and to establish solid foundations based on art and community. The photography workshop primarily focused on creating stories regarding the village and its environs, its daily life, social structure and its representations, its architectural stance, as well as historical mythologies and its disposition concerning the geographical conditions. At the same time it encouraged the participants to evaluate and structure their own styles, approaches and interests. Throughout the week, with the direction and support of the workshop leader, the participants developed a visual discourse by way of perceiving photography as the possibility of creating a “moment” within social processes. These “moments” progressed into deeper and sometimes one-on-one dialogues with the village. During the workshop, participants both built up their own stock of photographs and found the possibility of creating a platform for visual discussion and evaluation as they worked towards the final exhibition. In the end they made a selection of photographs, guided by the evaluations of the participants’ stocks. The possibilities that aroused during the week were presented to the inhabitants of Gülpınar in the form of an exhibition alongside the dinner and the video screenings on the last day of events. Born in Rosendaal, as the child of a DutchTurkish family, workshop leader Ahmet Polat won the Dutch Foundation for Visual Art’s Top Dutch Photography prize in 2004 and is the first Turkish recipient of ICP’s (International Centre of Photography) “Young Photographer” title at the 22nd Infinity Awards (2006). In addition to his recent one-person shows in Istanbul Modern (2007) and Galery X-ist (2006), he participated in group exhibitions in Art-Rotterdam, Gallery R.A.M, Stroom Den Hague and Wester-Gasfabriek (Amsterdam), to name a few. It is intended to become a video-blog publishing short videos and to act as an online archive committed to the preservation of the diversity of identities. entropyTV Gülpınar’daki Video Atölyesi, tek bir çekim ile kısa video anlatıları yaratma konusunu irdelemiştir. The first workshop of these series takes place at Meeting Point: Gülpınar. The course leaders introduce the participants to the history of moving images and to a technique for film narration that enables even non-film professionals without prior editing knowledge to create video clips. The workshop reflects the local environment and the events taking place during the week, documenting the surrounding and the participants’ perceptions of it. The project in Gülpınar focuses on creating short video narratives, shot in a single take. The workshop analyzes examples of single take movies from the history of the moving image in a wide spectrum. After sessions of developing ideas for short single-take narratives, participants moved onto the hands-on process of shooting. The course highlighted the difficulties of the single-take and concentrated on ways of transforming the idea from conception into a narrative. The videos are shot from the moment of turning the camera on, to the moment of turning it off, with no interruption and no editing, and are subsequently published online. German TV-correspondents Sabine KüperBüsch and Thomas Büsch produce news and documentaries for international broadcast channels. As independent filmmakers they work on developing new forms of visual narrations. Based in Istanbul, they focus on creative programs on Turkey and its neighboring countries. In 2007, they won the “Best Short Documentary” award by the Brooklyn Arts Council for the BAC 41st International Film and Video Festival in New York City, USA, with their documentary “The Story of Water Sprite”. In cooperation with Anadolu Kültür A.Ş. (İstanbul) and the Berlin Senate, the workshop series will continue taking place in various neighborhoods of Istanbul and Berlin leading finally to a large scale presentation comparing various living conditions in the two cities. The Aegean coast has the greenest cuisine of all Anatolia. The green begins at olives in the Aegean. With their evergreen trees that never shed their leaves... And the pure olive oil that their fruit bear is the most favourite and indispensable accompaniment to other greens, whites and reds. The Aegean cuisine is the culmination of naturalness with simplicity to produce the most complicated, surprising and sophisticated of all possible tastes. Like poetry or a song emerging from a simple feeling... Or the Aegean cuisine is rather a play. The produce are the actors, the sea and the olive trees the stage, and the women of the Aegean are like the spellbinding directors. The director is the woman just like everywhere else in Anatolia. She who creates bulgur out of wheat, cheese out of milk, tomato paste out of tomatoes, and men and women out of her children. Of course the women of the Aegean are luckier than the rest of those in Anatolia. She has the good fortune of having nature on her side, alongside her own wisdom and sensibility. Nature is extremely generous in the Aegean. The most beautiful of all its “wild” extras are the weeds, the mushrooms and the flavours coming from the seas. Grilled, fried in a drop of oil or as it is; plainly boiled in water, with a slice of lemon and a cloud of olive oil on top and there, that’s magic for you. Nature provides olives in mid-winter, amidst the cold in December and in January, to crack, to rest or to squeeze to eat... Spring, stimulated with envy of winter’s generosity, roams the goats and lambs to make use of their meat, milk, yoghurt and cheese. A secret to the Turkish cuisine defies change throughout the ages: seasonal, fresh and cooked lightly. This is also the most important character of the Aegean cuisine. The farmers, the fishermen and the shepherds of the Aegean recognise and guard this secret just like the women do. The Aegean is the Mediterranean. It has all the streaks, tunes, colours and scents of the Mediterranean. The olive and the wheat are thus never alone. Here one would also find grapes; to eat, to make molasses and wine with. Here you are also never short of figs or quinces, mulberries or blackberries and pomegranates. On its one coast are there the Turks, on the other the Greeks. Sharing the same sea, the same sun, the same fish, cheese and mushroom for well over a thousand years... just as they share the same troubles, the same music and the same love... AUBERGINE WITH CHEESE For the aubergine with cheese, a filling of lor (a fresh cheese similar to ricotta), chopped parsley and eggs is prepared. Even though the aubergines were halved before being fired, first they had to strip. In fact they wanted to be neither undressed nor stripped off. At last they agreed to be stripped off in stripes from all the way up from the neck, down to their feet, always leaving the next stripe dressed in their own costume. Then we halved them once more, this time sideways, making a total of four pieces out of each aubergine. Every piece was then slit lengthwise leaving a part of them attached so that they don’t fall apart, stuffed with the filling and fried in olive oil. Never mind the excessively health conscious people in the EU, freshly milked and boiled goat or sheep milk produces the most delicious cheese in this region. So, there is no need for the luxury of pasteurisation. Well, as if the famous camembert of the French is pasteurised! Boil the fresh milk (I prefer goat’s milk), milked in the morning. Strain it. If you like a bit of salt, add some and your salted lor, otherwise your unsalted lor is ready. Boil it. Add the yeast. Strain it. And your cheese (kelle peyniri, sepet peyniri or as famously named after a town nearby Gülpınar, Ezine peyniri) is ready. But you should be able to wait for a couple of weeks before you can eat it. If you are too eager to wait you can always prepare a local cheese dessert (höşmerim) with the lor. Add some sugar to the boiled and strained mixture that you have prepared for the cheese and continue cooking over log fire. The famous cheese dessert of the north Aegean and Çanakkale region is ready to eat… BULGUR WHEAT STUFFED VINE LEAVES (Yalancı Dolma) There is a salad known as kısır in the southeast of Anatolia and as tabbuli in Lebanon. The main ingredient is soaked bulgur wheat with the accompaniment of plenty of onions, parsley, fresh mint, dried flakes of paprika and home made tomato paste. Both kısır and tabbuli are eaten not with a fork and knife, but with a leaf of lettuce. And with a glass of yoghurt drink (ayran) on the side. The people of the Aegean Region eat this mysterious mixture wrapped inside their local produce; vine leaves. Wrapped inside the vine leaf, the leaf in fact acts rather like a spoon. When the leaf is as fresh and tender as the wrapped ingredients, this refreshing summer salad is indisputably called a fake stuffed leaf (yalancı dolma)… Location: Naile’s House Workshop Leader: Naile Yer: Naile’nin evi Atölye Yürütücüsü: Naile KEŞKEK Anadolu’nun köy düğünlerinde her bölgenin kendi giysileri, tören gelenekleri, yemekleri, dansları ve türküleri başroldedir. Be it in the Aegean or in Central Anatolia; what never changes is the main dish that is served to the guests before the ceremony. This main dish is keşkek; a mixture of wheat and lamb or chicken meat cooked for hours on end in great pots over open log fires, served ceremoniously to the guests. A symbol of fertility and abundance, this mixture looks very much like porridge for it is cooked for hours and squashed with a wooden spoon, and tastes slightly smoked . Keşkek is also famous for being one of the oldest recipes in the history of cooking. The first keşkek is believed to have been cooked nearly 10,000 years ago in Anatolia. SCRAMBLED EGGS WITH VEGETABLES (Menemen) Menemen is the name of a district close to İzmir. Also the name of a renowned dish named after this district. In fact it is like a dish consumed in all Mediterranean countries be it in the morning, at lunch or in the evening, indeed at all times of the day. Is it so easy to make. This makes Turkey the third biggest olive producer in the world and the fifth in olive oil production. But what does the Aegean have to do with this? 100 million of these 130 million trees are located in the Aegean region. The olive tree is the oldest tree of the Mediterranean. It is 60.000 years old. Its old name is Zeytinyağı Üzerine... delice. And the invention of olive oil goes back 10.000 years. Zeytin ağacı Akdeniz’in en eski ağacı. Yaşı 60.000. Eski adı “delice”. Zeytinyağının yaşı ise 10.000. Yakar garlar sebebiyle zeytinyağının lezzetine hafifçe (biber yakarı, boğazda duyulan) iyot karışması… The olive tree comes to fruition right in the middle winter between the months of November and February each year. The olives are harvested as they ripen on the tree and one side of them start to darken. If you collect them before that, then you will get green olives. So the green and the black olives are not the produce of different trees (!). When you press them immediately after collection, whether with old methods or new and modern ones, you will get extra virgin olive oil. The quality of the pressed olive oil is determined through two stages. The first one is its percentage of acidity, which is measured at laboratories. If the acidity is below 0.8% the olive oil becomes an extra virgin “candidate”. To be recognised, however, requires an olive oil taster. The gourmet makes his/her evaluation based on the flavour and perfume of the oil. There are three criteria of quality that are tested through the flavour and perfume of the olive oil. 1. Fruitiness (like olive, apple, almond, apricot; sensed by the nose and the mouth) 2. Bitterness (the bitterness of an unripe fruit felt at the back of the tongue) 3. Pungency (the pungency of pepper, felt at the throat) Contrary to common belief and unlike wine, the green or yellow colour is no criterion for quality. Thus the blue opaque tasting glasses are used in professional examinations, so as not to influence the taster by the colour. Alongside these positive criteria, the olive oil should also not have a character that is like vinegar, soil, metal, or like it has gone stale. Just as a wine should not smell of the cork or like vinegar, an olive oil that smells like vinegar could as well be refused. The olive oil as a product effects not only the cuisine of the Aegean region but the totality of its economical and social life. Young girls and boys alike wait for the harvesting season of olives to get married; and from July onwards (which is the season of flowering of the trees when the forecasts are made on the amount of fruit) in all houses and at teahouses nothing but weather, rain and the coming season of harvest is deliberated... The area that Gülpınar is located in has a much more important peculiarity when compared to other parts of the Aegean Region. Organic olive and olive oil production where the route of Çanakkale, Ezine, Ayvacık and Küçükkuyu within which Gülpınar is situated is an area highly suitable to organic agriculture and with the wind blowing from the sea the taste of iodine mixes slightly into the relish of olive oil… Bu ortak his, tiyatro grubunun, oyunu sahnelemedikleri diğer günlerde yerel mutfak atölyesine katılıp, patlıcan dolma ve mantı gibi yerel lezzetleri pişirmeyi The festival activities had to communicate to people from different cultures using different languages, while still challenging its audience. Spanish PLAYGROUND Theatre Company’s object theatre performance “The Head in The Clouds” was one of the most successful in doing so because of its use of a non-verbal language and everyday objects. This made it easier for the spectators to draw parallels between the play and their own lives in the village. For the whole duration of the performance, for around 50 minutes, there was a crowd standing up to be able to view the performance, not showing any signs of getting tired of standing, nor making any attempts to leave. Some people were so moved by the performance that they could not stop themselves from shedding a tear. In fact, interaction started long before the play itself took place, among the project team, people from the municipality, the shop owners and the men of the village, initiated while building the stage for the play. This interaction continued in another way when the members of the playground company joined the local cuisine workshop to learn how to prepare local delicacies like stuffed aubergines and ravioli. de öğrenmesiyle devam etti. On another night there was a film screening in the courtyard of the school, bringing back the aura of the open-air cinema that the village elders remember from the 1950s -an attempt to re-enact the atmosphere of the OPEN AIR MOVIE THEATRE the village had some 50 years ago. Hence the choice of the 1960s kitsch / trash Turkish movie with English subtitles. Haftanın açılışını yapan ÇANAKKALE CAZ KENT grubu geniş repertuarı ile bölgede müzikle ilgilenen gençlerin ilgi alanlarını tanımlaması açısından ilginç bir akşam yaşattı. Hemen ertesi gün İstanbul’da Altı Aylık adlı alternatif sanat mekanının yöneticilerinden ÖYKÜ ÖZSOY İstanbul’daki sanatçı inisiyatifleri üzerine köy kahvehanesinde konuşma yaptı. Alternatif sanatçı mekanları programa katılan sanatçıların ilgisini çekerken, Türkiye’de devlet ve sanat fonlarının irdelenTürk müziği tarihçisi MURAT MERİÇ’in DJ’liğini yaptığı Türk-iş FUNK partisi tüm hafta boyunca dillerden düşmeyen, kaçıranların tekrarını istediği bir performans gösterdi. 60’lar ve 70’ler Türk pop müziğinin köyün sokaklarını doldurduğu performans, köy meydanında şehirli-köylü-Türk-yabancı-gençyaşlı herkesi bir araya getirip, el ele halkalar kurarak zaman zaman yöreye özgü parçalarla da saatlerce dans ettirdi. Türk müzik tarihinin önemli isimlerinin video kliplerinin de gösterildiği gecede, batının o dönemin müziği üzerindeki etkisi, bir anlamda gecenin herkese tanıdık gelmesini sağladı. The Türk-iş FUNK party, where Turkish music historian MURAT MERIÇ was DJing, became a huge success with the crowd and the inhabitants of the village could not stop themselves talking about it on and on. The performance filling the streets of the village with Turkish pop music of the 60s and 70s gathered city dwellers and villagers, Turkish people and foreigners, young and old alike in the town square, dancing, at times hand in hand, for hours on end. It started from the Turkish pop music of the era influenced by western forms and moved towards the folk music of the region and lasting for more than three hours, it ended up with the whole audience in unison, in a wide circle dancing sequence, traditional to the area. No wonder why the performance was immensely popular among the villagers as well as the international participants. mesi de belediye ve köylülerin bakış açılarına katkıda bulundu. Haftanın son iki gününü atölye çalışmalarının sonuçlarına adadık. Bir hafta boyunca bizleri bütün nikah ve sünnet düğünlerine davet etmekten çekinmeyen Gülpınar halkını, bu sefer bizim davet ettiğimiz SON GÜN YEMEĞİ, yerel mutfak atölyesi katılımcılarının kendi ülkelerinden tariflerden oluştu. Yemeğin gerçekleştiği kahvehanede, aynı zamanda FOTOĞRAF ATÖLYESİ SERGİSİ ve VİDEO ATÖLYESİ GÖSTERİMİ yer aldı. Haftanın ve Buluşma Noktası: Gülpınar’ın kapanışını Gülpınarlı çocuklar yaptı. Bir hafta boyunca YARATICI DRAMA ve MÜZİK atölyesine katılan çocuklar, yapmış oldukları kuklalarla köyün yağmur duasına çıkma geleneğine doğaçlama bir yaklaşımla, şarkılar söyleyip, yetişkinleri arkasına katarak köyü gezip performanslar yaptılar. The week was opened by the performance of the ÇANAKKALE CAZ KENT band with its wide repertory which, with their lively tunes echoing in the darkness of the night, was an influence on the young music enthusiasts of the village. On the second evening ÖYKÜ ÖZSOY, one of the directors of the alternative art space Altı Aylık gave a talk on artists’ initiatives of Istanbul. Realised at the village teahouse, the talk was of interest for the participating artists and provided the villagers and the municipality with important information on the nature of state and private funding for the arts in Turkey. The last two days of the project were devoted to the outcomes of the workshops. One of these was a BIG DINNER in one of the openair teahouses of the village, with a table full of food prepared by the local cuisine workshop participants, with a fusion of what was learned during the week and traditional recipes of the participants’ homelands, like a pay back to residents of Gülpınar who invited us to all of their wedding ceremonies and dinners. The dinner was accompanied by the EXHIBITION OF PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP and the VIDEO WORKSHOP SCREENING. The children who had taken place in the CREATIVE DRAMA and MUSIC workshops performed the final act on the closing day. They were gathered in a group, with the puppets they made throughout the week, walking the streets of the village and stopping at certain places to sing songs they learned, performing improvised ancient ritual prayer for rain, with the puppet theatre, gathering a crowd of adults who followed them. The unification of children, adults and participants worked well on another level during the SOCIAL WORK; an additional area of work trying to offer a helping hand to the village on a task chosen by the municipality. Social work was an opportunity for all the participants from different workshop groups to work alongside one another. The task was to paint a bare concrete wall. Although the time frame was not enough to finish the task, the people involved in the process were full of enthusiasm and willingness to get to know one another and to work together. The process started with all the participants, children and adults standing in front of the wall holding each other’s hands, while some of them drew the outlines on the wall with chalk. Once the outlines were transferred onto the wall, everyone started to paint the exterior with blue paint. The second day would have been to fill in each shape, after getting to know whom the outlines belonged to. Preparing the stencil, being covered in blue paint, working towards the same goal and doing so with a visible energy of solidarity and enthusiasm embodied one of the most moving moments of the project. Being under the same circumstances creates a ground common to everyone, and sharing a situation boosts the idea of a community and forms a stable foundation for creating new experiences in the later phases of the project, or even after. The project also set an example of transforming the whole village; the village-square, the school courtyard or a teahouse into a place for sharing. It was a good opportunity to demonstrate to the Municipality that art can exist anywhere and everywhere. This was vital, having learnt that the Municipality included the building of an indoors art centre in their three years plan, without an extensive vision on what to put inside. I also hope that the voluntary work that the team has put into building a small stage for the village would trigger the beginning of certain creative activities, which we wish to see getting realised in Gülpınar.
