görülen Yeguada de la Cartuja atlar›n›n sanata yans›mas›n› göstermek amac›yla ortaya ç›km›fl.
Peter Müller Peter’in eserlerinden oluflan sergide sanatç›; ünlü Avrupal› ressamlar›n
tablolar›nda da resmedilen bu soylu at›n, yine ünlü tablolarla birlikte foto¤raflar›n› çekerek
çarp›c› öyküler yarat›yor. 40 foto¤raf›n yer ald›¤› ve dolay›s›yla 40 farkl› kurgunun yarat›ld›¤›

The Istanbul Modern Art Museum Photography Gallery's latest exhibition is entitled "Purebred
Reflections" and catalogues the history of the Yeguada de la Cartuja breed of horses which
have had pride of place in European palaces since the 12th century. The exhibition, which will
last through April 26, includes over 40 photos depicting this breed of horse, based mainly on
the works of photographer Peter Müller Peter. The exhibition presents a mix of
audio-visual and narrative dimensions that aim to leave the observer spellbound by this
beautiful and majestic animal.

EXPERIMENTAL CULTURE BLEND
A new project in London called The Duble Club got going in
2008 and will be continuing for 6 months. Located in a
Victorian-era building next to the Angel tube station, it has
both a disco and a restaurant and brings together a mix of
African and Western modern music, art and design in
a single space. Created by artist Carsten Höller, the project
seeks to blend these two cultural worlds in a variety of ways,
with 50% of profits going to UNICEF. For more

Turkish artist Serkan Özkaya will have his
works featured in two galleries in New
York simultaneously, with one exhibition
at the Chelsea Slag Gallery called
'Sayg›de¤er Bay veya Bayan' (Esteemed
Lady and Gentleman) and one at
Brooklyn's Cabinet magazine gallery
called 'Ani Esinti' (Instant Inspiration).
The exhibition at the Slag Gallery features
the work "All the World's Workers" ('Tüm
Dünya ‹flçileri') which is composed of
hundreds of sponge human figurines.
It also includes the artist's video work
entitled 'David (Inspired by
Michelangelo)' which also featured in
the 9th Istanbul Biennial. There are also
five sculptures by the artist, who is
described by art critic Lilly Wei as "a
utopian who has enriched the concepts of
creativity and uniqueness." If you happen
to be in New York at the time, make sure
to check these two exhibitions out.

koruyucu azizlerinden Aziz Patrick ad›na
katoliklerin kutlad›¤› bu dini gün zamanla
de¤iflerek 5 günlük bir festival halini alm›fl.
Herkesin yeflil giydi¤i ve pub’lara ak›n etti¤i bu
festival süresince sokaklarda geçit törenleri ve
konserler düzenleniyor. St. Patrick’s Day festival
kutlamalar›na kat›lma amac›yla ‹rlanda’ya ak›n
eden turistlerin d›fl›nda Amerika, Avustralya,
Kanada gibi di¤er birçok ülkede de bu günün
an›s›na aktiviteler düzenleniyor.
Ireland's official holiday St. Patrick's Day is
celebrated on 17 March. Dedicated to Ireland's
patron saint Patrick, the festival lasts five days
and everybody wears green and heads to Irish
pubs and drinks lots of Guinness beer and
whiskey. There are also tons of concerts, parades
and street parties during this time. The best part
about it is that the festival has become not just
famous in Ireland but all over the world, in every
country with large Irish communities and
heritage, mainly the U.S., Australia and Canada.
Paris’in Eiffel Kulesi’ni en güzel gören
noktas›nda konufllanm›fl Musee de l’Homme’da
30 Mart 2009’a kadar Les Femmes du Monde
(Dünya’n›n Kad›nlar›) sergisi var. Eski denizci
Titouan Lamazou’nun seyahatleri s›ras›nda tan›k
oldu¤u farkl› kültürlerden ilham alarak ortaya
ç›kard›¤› bu sergide sanatç›n›n kad›nlar üzerine
çizimleri, foto¤raflar› ve tablolar› yer al›yor.
Situated in Paris's Eiffel Tower is the Musee de
l'Homme which until 30 March 2009 will be
featuring the exhibition entitled Les Femmes du
Monde (The Women of the World). The exhibition
brings together the photographic works of the
seafaring explorer Titouan Lamazou during his
journeys around the world while discovering
different countries and cultures. It features
drawings, photos and paintings by the artist.

Besides the permanent exhibition, there are also temporary exhibits, namely the "A Fossil
Paradise: The Discovery of the Burgess Shale" exhibition until 26 April, which features the rich
fossil collection of Charles D.Walcott.
The Royal Ontario Museum's C5 Restaurant&Lounge was added to the fifth floor after the
recent renovations under Daniel Libeskind. The restaurant's decor is inspired by the
architecture, stonework and mineral collections of the museum, and it also has a great
panoramic view of the scenery outside. The head chef is Ted Corrado, and his menu features
mostly red meat and seafood dishes, with delicacies as the smoked octopus. The restaurant is
open for lunch from tuesdays to saturday, and for dinner as well from thursdays to saturdays.

Established in 1937, the Musee de l'Homme features
seven sections that include objects that seek to define
humanity. Considered one of the most important
museums in terms of anthropology and ethnology, the
museum was originally built to house the priceless
artifacts in the collections of royal families from the
16th century. The museum now has an archive that
goes back 250,000 years, including fossils, archeological
discoveries, photos, old stones, ethnographic objects and
more. Besides the permanent collection, the museum
also hosts many temporary exhibitions. Until 30
March 2009, the museum hosts the "Les Femmes du
Monde" (Women of the World) exhibition which is
centered around the travels of Titouan Lamazou.
The Café de l'Homme on the first floor of the museum has
one of the best vantage points from which to view the
Eiffel Tower. Head chef of the cafe Michaël Foubert has
prepared a very creative menu that is based mainly
around fish and meat, along with a very good wine list.
One of the delicacies in the cafe is the lamb chops in
Bordeaux sauce. The ceiling is high and the general
layout and decor is very spacious and uplifting, with
great lighting that instills a romantic ambience overall.
The cafe is located in the Trocodero square of the
historic Palaise de Chaillot.

Located in the splendid grounds of the Sabanc› family's
Atl› Köflk mansion in Emirgan (named after a recreation
of a famous horse statue from Venice), the Sak›p Sabanc›
Museum has been the brightest star in the Istanbul art
world since opening in 2002, drawing such exhibitions as
Pablo Picasso, Rodin, and most recently Salvador Dali.
Besides being an exceptional museum, the former mansion
also features on its grounds the internationally renowned
Müzedechanga (a branch of Changa restaurant in Taksim),
which has won many awards and was even chosen best
restaurant by Wallpaper magazine in 2007.
The restaurant's head chief is Peter Gordon, and his menu
is Turkish and Mediterranean based. Such delicacies
include grilled halloumi cheese with sweet pepper sauce
for starters, and chicken tabouli with cous cous and raisins
for mains. The decor and architecture of the restaurant is
the work of Turkey's world-famous design agency Autoban.
Needless to say, the restaurant has a magnificent view
of the Bosphorus, make it the perfect place to relax and
sample one of their excellent cocktails after a tour
of the museum.

Turkey's first and only modern art museum features a permanent collection of modern and
contemporary Turkish art, as well as many temporary exhibitions, one of which is the "In Praise of
Shadow" ("Gölgeye Övgü") exhibition until 6 May, which is curated by Paolo Colombo and
features the film and documentary works of eight artists from seven countries based on the art
of shadow puppets and its place in Greek and Turkish culture.
Besides exhibitions, Istanbul Modern also has a small art cinema with regular weekly screenings,
art workshops and courses, and also, of course, the Istanbul Modern Cafe and Restaurant which
has a splendid view of the city right from the shores of the Golden Horn and looking out at the
historic peninsula. The restaurant has Turkish and international cuisine, with specialities like
olive-oil sarma, octopus salad and jumbo prawn fettuccine.

ulgaria's capital and biggest city Sofia is nestled amidst mountains and rivers. After decades of
insulation under communist rule, today Sofia has a cosmopolitan feel. Change is
everywhere, but so are traces of the city's history. Sofia's history goes back 7000 years, when
it was settled by the Thracian tribe of Serdians. The city was thus known as Serdica until the
19th century (Sredets in Bulgarian, since the 11th century). Today the city gets its name from
St. Sofia church in the city center. The word "Sofia" is from the Greek meaning "wisdom" and when
you see the city, you feel that it is an appropriate name, not least because of peace and maturity that
the city seems to inspire in visitors (although this might have more to do with the city's contrast with
big, bustling, crowded Istanbul). Sofia was an important administrative center in Roman times, and it
saw its golden era under the reign of emperor Constantine, making it one of the most important centers of Christianity in its time. During WWII it underwent heavy bombardment, but the wealth
of Roman and Ottoman history (the Ottomans having ruled Bulgaria for nearly half a millennia)
have for the most part survived intact and are visible everywhere. The most noteworthy historical
monuments are the Sveta Sofia Basilisk, Sveta Nedelia Church, Alexandar Nevski Cathedral, Boyana
Church, the Ottoman baths, the National History Museum and the Russian Church.
But beyond its historical riches, Sofia is a living breathing city of culture and the arts, with
a vibrant theater, opera, concert and music scene that would make it the envy of the Balkans. Among
the places worth visiting are the National Art Gallery - which houses over 3000 artworks by

The effects of the communist regime, which
ended in 1989, are still to be seen in Sofia.
The neoclassic architecture of the communist
period are what make up the bulk of the city.
But the old grayness is now for the most part
gone, and the wide city streets of Sofia are
more colorful than ever. The avenues are lined
with tall trees, the cobblestone boulevards offer
a procession of stylish boutiques, antique stores,
chic restaurants and cafes, and a happening
nightlife.
Vitosha Avenue - which stretches through the
entire city, is the main thoroughfare, and it's
also the best place to get a feel for the life and
soul of the city. You'll see all the big brand
stores and luxury boutiques along the length
of the avenue. Another avenue worth visiting is
the Graf Ignatie, especially for shoppers. Also
essential is a visit to the antique stores and
outdoor market around the Alexander Nevsky
Cathedral. The central market is also
worthwhile if you have a little more time on
your hands. There you'll find excellent fruits
and vegetables, local cheeses, olive, olive oil,
liqueurs, bread varieties, and Bulgarian wines.
Getting around the city is a breeze thanks to
an excellent tram system. Renting a car is ill
advised, since you'll have a problem with
parking in the relatively congested city center.

Alexander Nevski Katedrali
Bulgaristan’›n Osmanl› ‹mparatorlu¤u’nun egemenli¤inden kurtulufluyla sonlanan Osmanl›-Rus
Savafl›’nda kaybedilen Rus askerleri an›s›na 1912’de
yap›lan katedral Balkan Yar›madas›’n›n en büyük
katedrali. Rus mimarlar taraf›ndan tam 42 y›lda
yap›lm›fl. Ad›n› da bir Rus azizinden alan katedral
45 metrelik alt›n sar›s› kubbeleriyle flehrin pek çok
noktas›ndan görünüyor. Yine de Ortodoks inanc›n›n
en büyük ibadethanelerinden biri olan muhteflem
yap›y› yak›ndan görmeli.
Rila Manast›r›
Tarihi 10. yüzy›la dayanan Rila Da¤›’ndaki tarihi
manast›r Kutsal Ivan’a adanm›fl. Sofya’n›n 117
kilometre güneyindeki manast›r son halini 1834-1837
y›llar› aras›nda alm›fl. Eflsiz güzellikteki fresklerle
süslü Rila Manast›r› Bulgaristan’›n en ünlü kültürel ve
mimari miraslar›ndan.
Don't be surprised by those with ski gear in the
winter, they're on their way to or from the
nearby Vitosha mountains.
Sofia is at the foothills of the Vitosha
mountains, which is fast becoming a popular
skiing destination in Europe. With an altitude
of 2990 meters, the mountain is accessible by
cable car from Sofia. The main resort if
Borovets, which has long been a draw for skiers
from Europe and Turkey. If you're not into
snowboarding or skiing, then you could also go
hiking along the many mountain trails. The
view from the Vitosha mountains are
breathtaking, and have long since taken pride
of place as one of the regular stops of the
European jet-set.
There are also natural springs in the villages
nearby that are worth a visit, the most famous
of which are in the town of Bantia, which is
20 kilometers from the city center.
Alexander Nevsky Cathedral
This church was built in honor of the Russian troops
who lost their lives fighting for Bulgarian independence
against the Ottomans. It was built in 1912 and is the
largest cathedral in the Balkans. It was built by
Russian architects and engineers, taking them no
less than 42 years to complete the edifice. The golden
45-meter-high dome can be seen from almost
anywhere in the city.
Rila Monastery
Built in the 10th century, Rila Monastery is dedicated
to Saint Ivan and is located 117 kilometers to the
south of Sofia. The monastery assumed its final form
between 1834-1837, and is noted for its
magnificent frescoes.

Boyana Kilisesi
Vitosha Da¤›’n›n eteklerinde yer alan Do¤u Avrupa

yaklafl›k 900 yafl›nda. Ortaça¤ Bulgar sanat›n›n örne¤i

Boyana Church
This is one of the best examples of medieval
architecture in eastern Europe. Situated on the
foothills of the Vitosha mountains, the church is
900 years old and features over 240 mural icons.
Boyana Church has been on UNESCO's World
Heritage list since 1979, and it also houses the
National Museum.

When to go? In winter Sofia gets quite cold, averaging between
about five degrees below and above zero. In summer the temperature is
around between 26 and 30 degrees celcius. The city has something
for every season.
How to get there? Turkish citizens need a visa to get to Bulgaria.
Turkish Airlines has daily flights from Istanbul to Sofia. Also Turkish
railways (TCDD) has a scenic train route between Istanbul and Sofia.

Türk Kültür Vakf› taraf›ndan desteklenen bir proje üzerinde çal›fl›yorum. Türk kültür
ve sanat›n›n Bat› Avrupa’ya etkisi... Bat› Avrupa diye üzerine basarak söylüyorum
çünkü Avrupa’da Türk mimarisi hakk›nda diye birçok de¤erli kitap var ama bunlar eski
Osmanl› topraklar› olan Avrupa ülkelerini kaps›yor. Ben Fransa, Hollanda, Belçika,
‹ngiltere, ‹sveç, ‹talya, Romanya, Polonya gibi ülkeler üzerinde çal›fl›yorum. Bu bir
kitap çal›flmas›. Sergi de yapacakt›m ama bütçe çok fazla tuttu¤u için iptal etmek
zorunda kald›k. 2010 senesine yetifltirmek istiyorum. Bu kitab›n bir amac› da flu: Benim
hiç bir politik angajman›m yoktur. Liberal kafal› bir insan›m. Fakat bu projede bir
parça milli duygular›m beni dürttü. Avrupa Birli¤i’ne giriflimizle ilgili bat›n›n tavr›
beni rahats›z ediyor. Sanki Türkiye onlara çok yabanc› olan bir kültür gibi
davran›l›yor. Bu davran›fla karfl›; “Türkler 14. yüzy›ldan itibaren sizin içinizdeydi, sizin
düflüncelerinizi, kültürünüzü bile etkiledi” tezini kan›tlamak istiyorum. Bilimadam›
oldu¤um için bunu bilimsel bir flekilde anlat›yorum.
Sizin çal›flmalar›n›z›n hepsinde ciddi bir araflt›rma ve uzun süreli bir çal›flma
sürecinden söz etmek mümkün. Buna finansman sa¤lamakla ilgili sorunlar›n›z
oluyor mu?
Hakl›s›n›z, benim çal›flmalar›m pahal›d›r. Ben mütevaz› yaflayan biriyim. Lüksü aramam.
Fakat projelerim pahal› çünkü orijinal çal›flmalara imza atmak istiyorum. Mesela
“Osmanl› Çad›rlar›”n› yapt›m biliyorsunuz. Fevkalade iddial› bir çal›flmayd›. Askeri
Müze ve Topkap› Saray› koleksiyonlar›n› çal›flt›m. Fakat onlar kadar önemli olan
Avrupa’daki çad›rlar var. Nerelere gitmedim bunun için: Krakow, Macaristan,
Almanya, Avusturya, ‹sveç, Ermitaj... Bu kitap için çok seyahat etmem gerekiyordu.

We caught up with professor of art history Nurhan Atasoy at the Turkish
Cultural Foundation and asked her a few questions.
Let's start in reverse. What are you doing these days, what are you researching?
I'm working on a project that's sponsored by the Turkish Cultural Foundation. The project is
on Turkish culture and its effects on Western Europe. I stress the fact that the project deals
with Western Europe, because most books on Turkish architecture and history in Europe deal
with former Ottoman lands in the Balkans. I'm focusing on the western half of Europe, dealing
with countries like France, the Netherlands, Belgium, the U.K., Sweden, Italy, and also
Romania and Poland. The project is a book. I was also going to do an exhibition, but we didn't
have the budget for that. I want the book to be out by 2010. Another aim of the book is this:
I have no political interests in researching this book. I'm generally of a liberal mindset. But on
this project I was to an extent influenced by a nationalist and patriotic urge. I felt bothered by
the attitude of Western Europe toward Turkey and its bid to enter the EU. They generally treat
Turkey like it's a very foreign culture to theirs. So to counter this attitude I want them to see
that Turks have been amongst them since the 14th century and have been influencing their
culture and ideas ever since then. Because I'm a scientist I approach this issue from a scientific
perspective and methodology.

yak›n da foto¤raf çektim. Bu foto¤raflar
çal›flmalar›mda bana yard›m etmesi
içindi. Ondan sonra kitaba girecek
kareleri çekmesi için oralara profesyonel
foto¤rafç›lar yolluyoruz. Bu da bir
masraf. Ayr›ca, bu kadar çabadan sonra
kitab›n iyi bas›lmas›n› da istiyorum. ‹flte
bu yüzden masrafl›.
Kitaplar›n›z 盤›r açt› ama...
Öyle deniyor. fiimdilerde herkes kaliteli
kitap yapmak u¤rafl›nda... Bana da bunu
söyleyen ve üzerinde düflünmeye
sevkeden Bahattin Öztuncay oldu. “Siz
bir ekol bafllatt›n›z” dedi. Do¤ru
söylüyor: ‹znik kitab›m mesela; bütün
Kütahya çinicilerine yol açt›. O kitab›
referans olarak kullan›yorlar.
Çocuklu¤unuzdan beri tarihe ilginiz
oldu¤unu okudum. Küçük bir çocuk
resme, müzi¤e, dansa ilgili olur da
tarihe ilgi duyan pek yoktur. Neydi
merak uyand›ran?
Benim büyük babam t›p profesörüydü ama
tarihe inan›lmaz merak› vard›. Bizim
sülalede sadrazam var: Sultan Mahmut’un
sadrazamlar›ndan Hasan Pafla. Büyük
babam ona merak sarm›flt›. Hiç durmadan
arflive gider, araflt›r›rd›. Sonra gelir bize
anlat›rd›. O s›ralarda bende de bir ilgi
bafllad›. Asl›nda çok yaramazd›m. Lisenin
son senelerinde çok kültürlü bir
ö¤retmenim oldu. O beni sanat tarihine
itti. Kendi kendime desen çal›flmalar›
yapmaya bafllad›m ve üniversitede de
baflka hiçbir bölümü düflünmedim.
Sadece Türkiye de¤il, tüm dünya
sanat› ile yak›ndan ilgileniyordunuz,
de¤il mi?
Çok sa¤lam bir Avrupa sanat› kültürüm
vard›r. Bu konuda dersler de verdim.
Üniversitenin ilk y›llar›nda babama dedim
ki, benim gidip Avrupa müzelerini
görmem laz›m. 1,5 ay trenle dolaflt›m.
‹nan›lmaz bir deneyim oldu. Tek
bafl›mayd›m. O dönemde bir Türk k›z›n›n
tek bafl›na Avrupa’y› dolaflmas› fevkalade
ilgi uyand›r›yordu. Bütün müzeleri
gezece¤im diye öyle paralad›m ki kendimi
8 kilo vermifltim döndü¤ümde... Kendi
kendine ayakta durmay› da insan böyle ö¤reniyor. O seyahat bana çok fley katm›flt›r.

Your work necessitates much time and
resources. Do you have trouble obtaining
the necessary financial backing?
You're right, my work is expensive. I'm a
person who lives modestly. I don't go for
luxury. But my projects are more expensive
because I want to create original and
authentic work as a result of my labors. For
example, I did something on "Ottoman
Tents". It was a very ambitious project. I
used items from the collection of the Turkish
war museum, but then there were also
amazing examples from European collections,
from Krakow, Hungary, Germany, Austria,
Sweden, the Hermitage... I had to travel a
lot for the sake of this book. My sponsor
covered these travel costs. All of these of
course add to the budget of the project.
Then there's the issue of photos for the
book. For example, for the book "Silk"
I traveled to 20 countries. I went to 70
different museums, private collections and
monasteries. You have to be a little crazy to
do all this! I also took close to 2000 photos.
These photos were necessary to help me
out on my research. After that we send
professional photographers to go take the
images that would be used in the book. That's
another added expense. After all this effort I
hope the book print turns out well. That too is
an expense, but one that's well worth it.
Your books have been groundbreaking
they say...
So they say. These days everybody want to
make quality books... And the first person to
say this and encourage me to take this on has
been Bahattin Öztuncay. He said I started a
new movement, a whole new school of thought
regarding research. He's right: take for
instance my book on Nicaea and ceramics, it
suddenly caused all the ceramicists of Kütahya
to become famous and sought after overnight.
That book is used as the primary reference for
that kind of craft.
I heard that you've been into history
ever since you were little. It's normal for
a child to be interested in drawing,
music or dance at an early age, but
history seems a rare field for a child to
be interested in. What caused this?
My grandfather was a doctor but he was also
very passionate about history. We have Grand
Viziers in our family line, namely Hasan
Pasha, who was Grand Vizier to Sultan
Mahmut. My grandfather got interested in
that. He kept researching at the library and
the archives. Then he would come back and
explain everything he'd learnt to us. Those
days I started getting interested in this too.
I was generally very naughty as a kid, then in
my final years in senior high school I had
a very cultured and excellent teacher who got
me interested in art history. I started doing
my own design work and never thought of
studying anything else but that at university.
You're not just interested in Turkish art
history, but world art history, correct?
I have a very good grounding in European art
history. I've also given lectures and courses on
it. In my first years at university I told my dad
that I had to go and see the art museums of
Europe for myself. So I wandered around
Europe for a month and a half. it was an
incredible experience. I was all alone. In those
days it was un heard of for a Turkish girl to
travel around Europe all by herself. I was so
frantic and excited about seeing as many
museums as I could that I lost eight kilos over
the trip! You learn to stand on your own two
feet this way, and it's a great experience.
Most people complain that art history in
Turkey is all about learning by rote and
memorization. Do you agree that this is
the case? How is it in other countries?
Here the most important factor is knowing a
foreign language. if you're going to work on
European art then it's essential that you know

study other cultures. If you don't understand the
whole picture it's impossible to understand the
details. Thus you cannot understand yourselves.

some foreign languages. Because there aren't
any publications in Turkey that could teach
you European art! You have to read foreign
publications and learn them inside out. You
have to look at the pictures and recognize
them. You can't memorize. I used to take my
grandchildren to museums in the U.S. You
have to tour museums in a clever and knowing
way. If you try and see every single item, try
and read every single caption, you would go
crazy, and probably not end up learning much
either. Instead I showed my grandchildren
some selected works. I tried to explain and
summarize the art of the Middle Ages over a
single sculpture or painting, focusing on
certain characteristics and features that were
idiosyncratic of a particular period or
movement. That's also how I try to do it with
my students. I also use lots of slides. the
difference between Turkey and European
countries is that in the latter they don't try to
teach everything or cram as much as they can
into a course. In Europe, students are expected
to make their own list of books to read and
research. Even just this methodology teaches
students an invaluable skill. In our system,
unfortunately, there's no such flexibility or
creativity. The information is given to
students who are expected to just take it in.

Let's say you got an idea. You want to
work on a particular topic and create a
book on that topic. What is the process
by which this idea becomes reality?
First of all I look at all the extant works and
books on the topic at hand. Having read
them, I end up with a whole host of new
questions in my head. I then set about trying
to find the answers to those questions through
my research. I collect archival material.
I look at miniatures. Once you put all this
information together, your project comes to
together much like a jigsaw puzzle.
Do you use the internet?
Yes, but I don't use information of the internet
as footnotes in my books. I only use it to
collect preparatory information.
Do you like to travel?
Speaking of museums, what would you
like to say about modern museums in
Turkey? Do you find the temporary
exhibitions that come here from abroad
to be satisfactory?
They're very good. First of all I would like to
mention [Sabanci Museum Director] Nazan
Ölçer. Great countries and great cultures are
also naturaly interested in other cultures and
countries. To understand our own culture we
must also study other cultures. If you don't
understand the whole picture it's impossible
to understand the details. Thus you cannot
understand yourselves.
Yes, I love it, but these days I just want to lie
in my own bed. I miss my couch at home.
What does an art historian, a researcher,
a professor first do when arriving in a
new city? Where does one go and see?
When I was young I wanted to see everything:
monuments, museums, the daily life... These
days I go to cities to see and do certain things.
For example, when I went to Dresden I took
various appointments with certain people and
once I was done I left without doing much else.
What are some of the places you'd like to
see?
Which museum and collection has most
impressed you?
India, China and Mongolia.
They all have a different value and a
different effect. The British Museum, for
example, is simply dizzying in terms of how
rich and diverse its collection is. The
Metropolitan Museum in New York is the
same. I've also been to the Hermitage many
times and always find something new there.
Topkap› Museum is also one of those
museums that always astounds me.
Have you ever thought about retiring?
I'm already retired!
No not like that, I mean have you ever
wanted to just drop everything and do
nothing?
No. That seems like death to me. We didn't
come to the world to rest and be idle. We
have to do something while we're here!

the north of Syria is the wonderful
covered bazaar with its tight and
narrow labyrinthine alleys and streets,
making it the longest bazaar in the
Middle East. You can get everything
worth buying in Aleppo at this bazaar,
namely shawls, silk textiles, spreads,
copperware, spices, soaps, rosary
beads, and a lot more. In one corner of
the bazaar is Sebastian (Sharia
al-Qala'a) which sells some of the
highest quality textiles available, even
though the selection is limited. They
specialize in kilims and silk rugs.
In the more westernized part of the
city on a wide avenue you'll find the
modern Aziziye Market, which is
also worth a visit.

Malzemeler 400 gr ceviz, 1 paket etimek veya kuru ekmek,
200 gr biber salças›, 100 gr tahin, 20 gr reyhan, 20 gr kimyon
Yap›l›fl› Ceviz d›fl›ndaki tüm malzemeleri mikserden geçirin. Cevizleri
merdane ile ezip biber kar›fl›m›na ekleyin. Üzerine nar ekflisi dökerek servis
edebilirsiniz.
Ingredients 400 gr walnuts, 1 package of dry bread (Etimek will do),
200 gr pepper salsa, 100 gr taheen, 20 gr sweet basil, 20 gr cumin
Preparation Put all the ingredients through the mixer, except for the walnuts.
Crush the walnuts with a rolling pin and add to the mix. Pour pomegranate
syrup and serve.

But we don't know the half of it. In Antakya, you will not have even heard of the kinds of dishes they
have here. The first person who caused us to unlearn everything we'd thought we'd known about
Antakya was the head chef at the Dedeman Antakya, Çetin Telli. He prepared an extraordinary feast
that included such specialities as: Zahter Salatas› (Zahter Salad), Tepsi Kebab› (Tray Kebab), Ka¤›t
Kebab› (Paper Kebab), Tuzda Tavuk (Salted Chicken), Kabak Borani, Baba Ganush, Humus, Kat›kl›
Ekmek (layered bread), Cevizli Biber (peppers with walnut), Sac Oru¤u, Kaytaz Böre¤i, Meyan Kökü
fierbeti (sherbet) and Ceviz Reçeli (walnut marmalade).
It was a real feast for kings. You realize that there are certain ingredients in Antakya cuisine that are
particularly important, such as Zahter (a kind of wild mountain sage), nar ekflisi (pomegranate syrup),
çökelek peyniri (a kind of cheese), biber salças› (red pepper salsa) and cumin.
The main mezes (which can be described roughly as Turkish tapas) include Cevizli Biber, Baba Ganush,
and Humus. The peppers with walnuts (Cevizli Biber) is prepared with red pepper salsa, cumin, dry
bread, taheen, walnuts and basil. As for another specialty, the Zahter salad, you use onions, parsley,
tomatoes, olive oil and of course the ubiquitous pomegranate syrup. It's super tasty as well as being very
healthy. Another favorite in Antakya cuisine is the Oruk (like an "içli köfte" or a stuffed bulgur
meatball), which, when served laid out between two layers of bulgur, is called a Sac Oru¤u.
The most important part of Antakya cuisine is the dessert, and particularly the "künefe" which every
“Istanbullu” knows very well. Künefe is made from cheese-filled filo-pastry. You'll find it everywhere in
Antakya, served in enormous trays. The trick to a really good künefe is the fresh unsalted cheese and the
filopastry kadayif which is sold in Uzun Çarfl›.

Ingredients 500 gr beef ribs, 300 gr lamb leg, 200 gr tail fat, 200 gr dry onion,
2 sprigs fresh mint, 4 sprigs parsley, 200 gr red bell peppers, 200 gr fresh garlic,
100 gr salsa, salt and pepper
Preparation Pass ribs, lamb leg and tail fat through a mincer. Mince the vegetables.
Cook minced meat and vegetables together and then spread on a tray as if it were
a pizza. A copper plate is perfect for cooking. Add water to the salsa and serve on the
kebab. Place in 190 degree oven and cook for 20 minutes.

Yap›l›fl› Nohutu bir gece önceden ›slat›n. Ertesi sabah hafllay›n ve suyunu süzün.
Eti hafllad›ktan sonra, so¤an ve sar›msakla birlikte tereya¤›nda piflirmeye bafllay›n.
Etin piflmesine yak›n nohut, kabak ve tuzlu yo¤urdu ekleyin. Kuru nanenin yan›s›ra bütün
kuru k›rm›z› biberle de servis edebilirsiniz. Dikkat edilmesi gereken nokta tuzlu yo¤urdu
ekledikten sonra tencerenin kapa¤›n› kapatmadan, a¤z› aç›k flekilde piflirmek...
Ingredients 1,5 kg squash, 400 gr beef, 200 gr chickpeas, 2 kg salted yoghurt,
30 gr dry pepper, 20 gr garlic, 100 gr dry onion, 10 gr salt,10 gr red pepper flakes,
100 gr butter, 20 gr dry mint
Preparation Soak the chickpeas in water overnight. Next morning boil the chickpeas
and drain. Sautee cooked meat in garlic and onions. When nearly ready, add
chickpeas, squash and yoghurt. Serve with dry mint and - if you like - red pepper flakes.
Make sure that after you add the salted yoghurt you let the food cook uncovered.
Ingredients 500 gr beef, 2 kg dry onion, 1 kg thin bulgur, 1 sprig parsley, 100 gr pine,
nuts, 100 gr salsa, 100 gr walnuts, salt and pepper
Preparation Drain the wet bulgur and pass through mincer with the salsa twice. Cook
the meat, onions, parsley, pine nuts, walnuts, salt and pepper in a separate pot.
Make two big balls (orange sized) of bulgur and open slightly. Place the filling inside
and close. Cook on a buttered pan or on a grill.

Ingredients 500 gr tel kaday›f (made with filopastry), 250 gr unsalted cheese,
200 gr butter, 1 kg sugar, 50 gr fresh lemon juice
Preparation Place the kadayif in a tray with thin sides and preferably made of
copper. Open the middle and place butter while cooking slowly. Kneed the kadayif
gently with your fingers. Take the kadayif off the flame and divide into two. Butter the tray
and place half the kadayif on it. The kadayif layer should not be higher than half a
centimeter. Spread it out and press down. Place the unsalted cheese over the kadayif.
Place the remaining kadayif over the cheese and spread evenly. Cook on high flame
until pink on the bottom. Repeat with other side of künefe. Pour sugar syrup over
it and serve warm.

Rich History
Archeological research shows that Urfa has
a history stretching back 11,000 years, to
neolithic times. This is a veritable "museumcity" that has a historical accumulation rivaled
by few other cities in the world. The city
lives and breathes history in its narrow streets,
stone houses, colorful bazaars and markets, and
its legends, all of which beckon to explorers and
history buffs alike. Urfa started off as a very
important pagan center, having been home to
many temples prior to the Judeo-Christian
and later Islamic eras. In Harran is the temple
to the head pagan god Sin. But it's the
monotheistic history of Urfa that is the most
impressive, especially considering that this

Crusaders and other Muslim powers. By 1516
it was conquered by the Ottomans. After
a brief period of occupation by the victorious
Allied Powers - the British followed by the
French - after the First World War, the city
was liberated by the Turkish nationalists in
1920. The name of the city was officially
changed to "fianl›urfa" (Glorious Urfa) in
1984, as recognition for the victorious battle
for the city against the occupying French forces.
The oldest known name of the city is from the
Aramaic: "Urhay". Under the Macedonians the
name of the city became Edessa, while the
current name hails from the Assyrian word
Urhai, which is believed to come from the
Semitic root "Er-Ruha" meaning "rich
with water".

Urfa Market
The central market of Urfa is where craftsmen
have their little workshops and ateliers and
where they display and sell their works in the
colorful labyrinthine narrow streets. It's truly
a feast for the senses, full of color, sounds,
variety of people and products, all of which
offers a mesmerizing experience that is hard to
find anywhere else. The main Urfa Market
consists of eight covered bazaars and one
underground bazaar. The Bedesten Market
(a.k.a. Kazzaz Bazaar) built in the 16th
century is the heart of the market. This market
is a kaleidoscope of colors where you'll find all
sorts of fabrics and textiles and silk products
from Syria, Iran and India, including shawls,
table cloths, towels, and rolls and rolls
of textiles. The markets also feature a lot of
copper products and woodwork and other
handmade crafts that still survive in the
markets, although even here they're starting
to recede. Other markets that make up the Urfa
super bazaar are the Furniture market
(Koltukçu Pazar›), the cotton (Pamukçu
Pazar›), the sack (Çulcu Pazar›), the tin
(Tenekeci Pazar›), the meat (Kasap Pazar›),
tobacco (Tütün Pazar›), copper (at Hüsniye
Çarfl›s›), a special market for the local spice of
"isot" (‹sotçu Çarfl›s›), perfume (Attar Pazar›),
pots and pans (Kazanc› Pazar›), ironwork
(Demirci Pazar›), and the carpet and kilim
bazaars (Hal›c› Pazar›), all of which are worth
visiting. perhaps the most incredible bazaar is
the pigeon bazaar (Güvercin Pazar›) where
from the early hours of the day you'll see locals
excitedly buying and trading pigeons, which is
a popular local obsession. All of these bazaars
are located around the Gümrük Han, which
is a great little courtyard where you can relax
and take a break with a delicious reviving tea
after exploring the markets.

çeflitli onar›mlar geçiren kalenin kuzey,

Situated south of the local Fish lake (Bal›kl›
Göl) and located on top of Damlac›k Da¤›
mountain is Urfa Castle. It was built in 814 by
the Abbasid Dynasty that ruled the Arab Empire,
and was constructed mainly upon the ruins of the
previous construction that was built by the
Seleucid Persians. There are many remains from
the period of the Seleucids, as well as the
Byzantines and the Islamic period. The castle
underwent later renovation and reconstructive
work under the Ayyubids, Seljuks, Mamluks,
Akkoyun Turkmens and the Ottomans.
Harran

Harran
Situated 50 kilometers from Urfa is the ancient
city of Harran in the valley of the same name.
This area has at least as much history as Urfa
itself, and is famous for the conical earthen
domed houses which are the city's trademark.
Other ancient buildings and ruins worth seeing
are the Bazda caves, the Han El-Barur
caravanserai built by the Seljuks in 1228, and
the Sogmatar ruins from the time of the Assyrians.
Harran has a history that goes back to 1000 B.C.
and was apparently a very important center of
learning until the 11th century A.D., having been
the location for the first Islamic University built
in the time of the Abbasid ruler Harun ur-Rashid.
Some of the greatest Islamic mathematicians,
astronomers and scientists lived here. The only
thing remaining from the university today is
the astronomical observation tower.
One of Urfa's oldest towns and regions, Halfeti was built by the Romans under the name
Ekamia, and is located on the banks of the Euphrates. Known as Halpa in Urartian texts, the area
is surrounded by many historical caves, and Halfeti is also the greenest part of Urfa province.
The Fish Lake
Perhaps Urfa's most distinctive landmark is the Fish Lake (Bal›kl› Göl) where it's believed in
religious legend that Abraham was to be burned to death for proselytizing against the
polytheistic pagan religion of the time. The ruler of the time - Nemrut - decides to punish
Abraham for this (and also for his having fallen in love with the ruler's daughter, princess
Zeliha), but just as they light the fire beneath him, the firewood beneath him turns into fish
and the fire turns into water, which eventually become a lake that is augmented by the tears
of Zeliha (hence the name of the lake: Ayn-i Zeliha). So the locals consider this lake sacred,
as they do the fish that live in it. On the eastern side of the pool is the Halil-ur Rahman
Mosque which was built atop the earlier structure of the Church of the Virgin Mary.
The Cave of Abraham According to legend, the ruler Nemrut saw a dream in which a child
would be born who would put an end to his reign, and so he ordered all the newborn male
children to be executed. And so Abraham's mother is believed to have given birth to Abraham
in this cave and to have raised him there until he was seven years old. Today you pass
through the Mevlid-i Halil mosque to get to the cave.

Ulu Mosque
One of Urfa's biggest mosques is the Ulu Camii mosque which was built by
the Zangi dynasty in 1170-1175, constructed upon what used to be the
St. Stephen Church (or the "Red Church" due to its distinctive red columns),
whose bell tower dating back to 457 is now the minaret of the Ulu mosque.
Urfan Cuisine and S›ra Nights
Without a doubt the most inspiring part of Urfa is its cuisine, which is
famous throughout not just Turkey but the entire Middle East. The first thing
you think of when you think of Urfa is "çi¤köfte" (raw meat balls), the
eggplant (Patl›canl›) kebab, borani, lebeni soup, bulgur meatballs, sar›msak
afl› (garlic dish), isot çömle¤i (isot casserole), marul dolmas› (stuffed lettuce),
so¤an tavas› (onion dish) and masluka. They also have a distinctive local
coffee called "m›rra" which is served in special cups called mekkavi.
Urfa is also famous for "S›ra" nights where 10-12 people come together
and enjoy food and music.

THE DARK CHURCH
Another surviving church from the 600 churches that were formerly to be found in the
region is the Karanl›k Kilise, or "the Dark Church". It gets its name from the fact that the
only light in the church comes from a small window in the nartex. The fact that it gets
such little light has helped preserve the vivid colored frescoes inside the church to this
day. Another interesting feature is that alongside Christian iconography you'll also find
Jewish religious representations in the church, which is something quite rare.

“Mehmet Kemal Dedeman Araflt›rma ve
Gelifltirme Proje Yar›flmas›”nda ödüle lây›k
görülen projeler aç›kland›. Yar›flman›n ödül
töreni, 12 fiubat’ta Dedeman ‹stanbul’da gerçeklefltirildi. Yar›flman›n 2008 y›l› için madencilik
dal›ndaki konu bafll›¤› “Türk Madencili¤ini
Gelifltirmeye Yönelik Araflt›rma ve Projeler”,
turizm dal›ndaki konu bafll›¤› ise flehir turizminin
öneminin giderek artmas›na paralel olarak
“Türkiye’de fiehir Turizmi; Dünü, Bugünü ve
Yar›n›” olarak belirlenmiflti. Her iki dalda birinci
seçilen proje sahipleri Dedeman Holding Yönetim

“Reading Turkish ‘Urban Tourism’

Ben kendine güvenen adamlar› severim. Biraz sertçe olsun, m›ym›nt› olmas›ndan iyidir. Hakk›n›
aras›n. Kendini ezdirmesin. Hani ekme¤ini tafltan ç›kar›r, derler ya, iflte öyle olsun. Ama hak da
yemesin. Zay›flar› korusun. Ama düflünceli de olsun. Yeri geldi¤inde bir tutam çiçek getirmeyi
bilsin. D›flar›ya sert olsun ama bana karfl› hep nazik olsun, sevgi dolu olsun. E biraz da kültürlü

derler, yalan. Benimkini görün de karar verin. Tüm gün nas›l göründü¤üne, nas›l durdu¤una,
nas›l koktu¤una bin bir dikkat eder. Çocuk meselesi daha erken dedim. Birbirimizi biraz daha
tan›yal›m dedim. Benim de akl›m sende, dedim, derken bahar geldi! Bizi baharda kimse tutamaz!

I fall in love every spring. But this time it's different.
He's the most handsome one in the neighborhood. You should see how he walks. His strides. It seems
he doesn't even notice me. He seems to fancy Selmin from the building next door. He hasn't looked at
me since I moved here. But apparently, it's all just a front.
I like self-confident ones. I prefer them a little rough rather than a little passive. He should be firm
and outgoing. He should be able to stand up for himself. That he could even draw sustenance from a
rock, as they say. He should protect the weak. But he should also be thoughtful. He should know how
to be sensitive and romantic, when necessary. He should be hard on the outside, but soft and loving
when it comes to me. And he should have a little culture and education. He should be able to say
things that matter, that have substance. He should say beautiful things. Am I too much of a dreamer?
Of course, there's also the matter of his height and posture. This one is so handsome, you wouldn't
believe it! If you say Brad Pitt, I'll say George Clooney. Sure, those two don't look alike, but what
I'm trying to say is that this one is like a film artist. And he's also well groomed. Cleaning himself
day and night. He's very particular about how he looks and how he smells.
I thought it is childish and too early. I thought we should get to know one another more. When,
I told him I think about you, spring time arrived! Nobody can hold us back in spring!

Bizim mahallede bir kabaday› vard›. Nam› tüm ‹stanbul’a yay›lm›flt›r, belki siz bile duymuflsunuzdur... Özellikle küçüklerin yiyeceklerini ellerinden almaya bay›l›rd›. Kötü kalpli iflte ne olacak,
ne al›yorsun çocuklar›n yemeklerini ellerinden? Kavga gürültü devaml›... Hiç huzurumuz
kalmam›flt›. Vallahi baflka mahalleye tafl›nmay› düflünüyordum. Ama benimki gelince, kabaday› bir
gün day›land› olmad›, ikinci gün day›land› olmad›, bakt› durum ciddi, apar topar kaçt›, hem de
mahalle bile de¤il, semt de¤ifltirmeye! Biz Haliç’in oralarda tak›l›r›z; bizim kabaday›n›n taa
fiaflk›nbakkal’da haraç kesti¤ini duyduk.

Bu kadar çok çocuk beklemiyorduk aç›kças›! Ama ne tatl›lar bir görseniz! Kimi sar›fl›n, benim gibi,
kimi esmer, onun gibi. Arkadafllar›mdan, pek çok baban›n çocuklar›yla hiç ilgilenmedi¤ini duymufltum.
Çok korkuyordum Süleyman da böyle yapacak diye. Ama do¤ar do¤maz bebekleri bir öpmek, bir
sevmek... Çat›r çat›r çatlad› tüm mahalleli! Böyle baba görülmemifltir, dedi herkes birbirine. Ne flansl›
kad›nd›r bu, dediler. Gerçekten de flansl› do¤muflum san›r›m. Bebekler de hayran kald›
annelerine her gün her gün yemek getiren, akflamlar› onlar› s›cac›k tutan bu babaya.
Bir yandan, bahar için seyahat planlar›m da vard›... fiöyle diyordum, uzanabildi¤im kadar
uzan›r›m. Gündüz bol bol gezerim, gece de kendime rahat edip keyif yapabilece¤im bir
köfle bulur güzel güzel uyurum... Öyle ya, tatil demek biraz da uyumak demek. Zaten
bay›l›r›m uykuya. Ne bileyim, geçen y›llarda Edirne’ye gitmifltim, biraz uzun yol tabii ama
yavafl yavafl gitmifltim iflte. Bu y›l da diyordum ki flöyle daha s›cak bir yerlere mi gitsem?

da¤a bay›l›r›m. Denizi görmezden gelir da¤a ç›kar›m. Diyordum ki bahar gelir, flöyle
yavafl yavafl... Ama nerede? Peflimde bir sürü ufakl›k, baflta bir koca...
Nas›l, nereye gideceksin? Ama söylendi¤ime bakmay›n siz, hepsi naz.
There was a bully in our neighborhood. He's known all over Istanbul, perhaps you've even heard of him...
He liked to take away the food from the young. Bad hearted! Why do you take the food away from
children? Always a fight and noise. We didn't get any peace. I even thought of moving to another
neighborhood. But then my guy and only came around... the bully tried his tricks on him, but it
didn't work. At the end the bully was the one who packed up and left! We hang out around the
shores of the Golden Horn, but we heard that our bully was now working at neighborhoods as
far away from us as fiaflk›nbakkal.
Even we didn't expect this many children! But you should see how sweet they are! Some are blonde,
like me, some are dark, like him. I've heard from my friends that many that a father never pays
attention to their kids. I was afraid about this, that Suleyman might do the same. But as soon as the
kids were born, he was loving and fawning all over them, kissing and cuddling and caressing them
whenever he could. He proved such a softie inside! Others would say that they'd never heard of
a father like him. They talked about how lucky I was. I think I really was born lucky.
I had some travel plans for spring... I thought I would go as far as I could go. I'd wander around
during the days, and then find a nice place to pass the time at night... It would be a holiday, a time
for some nice long rest and sleep. I love sleeping. Once I went to Edirne, a bit of a long trek, but
I went slowly. This year I was thinking of maybe going to a warmer place instead. Everyone
raves about the northern Aegean region, its mountains, the sea... I'm not so much into the sea, but
I love mountains. I thought spring would come around nice and slowly... but no. I have a bunch of
little toddlers hanging around me, not to mention my guy. Where are you going to go? What would
you do? But don't mind my complaining, it's all just me letting off steam.

sonra arkadafllar› dalga geçer. Derler ki, a bak, gökten sen ya¤›yorsun! Derler ki a bak, ne güzel
açm›fls›n! Türlü türlü dalga geçerler.
O da diyor ki sen hangi yüzy›lda yafl›yorsun, bu isimler kaç›nc› yüzy›ldan kalma. Kendi ismini be¤enmiyor hiç, çocuklar›nki modern isimler olsun istiyor. Bir de erkeklere isim konusu var ama
onda afla¤› yukar› anlaflt›k. En az›ndan iki isimde... Hiç yoktan iyidir. Biri Hakan, biri Can.

Çocuklar ne olacak... E çocuklar›n ne olaca¤› belli. Biraz büyüdükleri zaman ayr›lacaklar bizden;
do¤an›n kural› bu. Kalaca¤›z iki kifli. Herhalde seyahat ederiz diye düflünüyorum,
ikimiz de bay›l›yoruz gezmeye, yeni yerler keflfetmeye.
Bak›n kocam›n flu boyuna posuna. Vallahi bir insan kocas›yla ancak bu kadar
gurur duyabilir. Böyle parlak tüyler kimde var! Böyle simsiyah! Böyle hep dik,
nefis bir kuyruk! Böyle inci gibi difller! Böyle genifl bir gö¤üs kafesi! Vallahi bravo.

This time it's different. It's not the first time I'm going to be a mother, of course, but this time it's
different. This time there's even more love in it.
Finding a name for the children is difficult. The names I'm thinking are Asl›, Zeynep, Ayfle,
Zehra. He likes names that refer to nature, like Bahar (spring), Do¤a (nature), Çiçek (flower) or
Ya¤mur (rain). I tell him others might make fun of them, but he tells me I'm living in the past,
that the names I like are all too old fashioned. That's because he doesn't like his own name,
that's why he wants to give the kids modern sounding names. There's also the issue of naming the
males, but on that score we're more or less agreed. One would be Hakan, the other would be Can.
My friends ask me about our future plans. They ask me if we'll always live in this neighborhood.
They ask what will happen with the children. But it's obvious what will happen with them.
When they get a little older, they'll leave us, that's nature's law. We'll then be left the two of us.
I guess we'll travel a little, we both do love to travel after all, to explore new places and discover
new things.
Take a look at my guy's posture, his body. Nobody could be as proud of their husband as I am.
Who has such bright, dark, lustrous and shining hair! Who has such a strong, stiff tail! Such good
pearly white teeth!
Such a broad ribcage! Bravo!
Apparently they took Selmin from next door to a beauty pageant, and she was picked the most
beautiful cat there! But what do I care what humans think about our beauty? What are we,
decorative cats? I wouldn't enter a pageant if they were to give me a ton of liver to eat!
Speaking of liver... maybe we could forget the northern Aegean this time and head on over to Edirne
again?
