II. Course Information
CATALOG DESCRIPTION:
Definition of biology, disciplines of biology, science and scientific method, properties of living
organisms, classification of living organisms, basic constituents of living organisms, inorganic
substances, importance of water in life, biological molecules, properties of prokaryotic and
eukaryotic cells, viruses and viroids, structure of cell and function of organelles, structure
and function of cell membrane, transport in cell membrane, life and chemical energy,
aerobic and anaerobic respiration, fermentation, photosynthesis, chemosynthesis, energy
transformation events, cell division, mitosis and meiosis, Mendel and gene concept,
inheritance, DNA replication and repair, genetic code and protein synhesis, introduction to
ecology, food chain, carbon and nitrogen and phosphorous cycle, plant and animal tissues
COURSE PRECONDITIONS:
Only Undergraduate students are accepted
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
The aim of the course is to provide students with a basic understanding of biology and to
give information on the relationship between food and biology.
COURSE STRUCTURE:
The class meets for three lectures a week, each consisting of 50-minute sessions. There are
one in-class mid-term exam and a final exam.

GRADING:
There are one in-class mid-term exam and a final exam (closed book exams). The midterm
exam and final exam grades make up 40 percent and 60 percent of the cumulative grade,
respectively.

1. Introduction; science and scientific method, definition of biology and its scope,
disciplines of biology, common properties of living organisms, classification of living
organisms
2. Basic constituents of living organisms, importance of water in life, structure of water and
its properties, inorganic substances
3. Biological molecules, carbohydrates
4. Lipids, proteins and nucleic acids
5. Cell and its structure, prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells, viruses and viroids
6. Cytoplasm and organelles, cell membrane and transport of substances
7. Introduction to metabolism, life and chemical energy, ATP, enzymes, cellular respiration,
aerobic respiration, glycolysis, Krebs cycle, oxidative phosphorylation, anaerobic
respiration and fermentation, comparison of aerobic respiration and fermentation
8. Photosynthesis and chemosynthesis, structure of chlorophyll and its biosynthesis, factors
affecting photosynthetic rate, light-dependent and light-independent reactions,
chemosynthesis, leave and photosynthesis
9. Cell division, structure of chromosomes, mitosis and meiosis
10. Mendel and gene concept, inheritance
11. Properties of DNA and RNA, replication of DNA and its repair
12. Genetic code, protein synthesis and gene expression
13. Introduction to ecology, some concepts and models in ecology, environment, habitat,
community, ecosystem, biosphere, ecological niche, energy transfer, autotrophs,
