When German fascism spread to Greece in the course of World War II, large numbers of Greeks,
especially those from the islands, took flight to Turkey. And before long, a cluster of communities
sprang up on the Aegean coast where Greeks and Turks led a common life; communities such
as Alaçatı, Çeşme, Izmir, Kuşadası and Marmaris. Among surviving documents from the period,
even the register book logging all newcomers was officially known as ‘The Book of Returning
Immigrants’.
Tahsin İşbilen was born in Ezine in 1964. In 1982, he joined the Air Force. In addition to his regular
duties, he made numerous films for the armed forces. He resigned in 1998 and began directing
documentary films and commercials.

The documentary tells the story of Circassians forced to emigrate in 1864 after the long wars
resulted from the Russian invasion of North Caucasia. Inhabiting different locations in Anatolia, the
second, third and fourth generations of Circassians tell the stories of the migration, how they built
their new lives and their traditions that make Circassians exceptional. The documentary depicts
them in their daily lives and their rituals, both in Turkish and in their own language which is an
inseparable part of their culture.
Enis Rıza is one of the pioneers of documentary filmmaking in Turkey. He has made more than 30
documentaries to date, winning acclaim and awards both in Turkey and abroad. He also lectures at

Once upon a time, young people had dreams and ideals for a better future. And as a manifestation
of their ideals, young people in Turkey built a bridge over the River Zap in the Kurdish city of
Hakkari. It was a creative symbol of rebellion, a protest against the massive investment made in the
Bosphorus Bridge in Istanbul, a caustic comment on the inequalities between the East and the West
of the country...
Bahriye Kabadayı was born in Istanbul in 1977. She graduated from Marmara University with
a bachelor’s degree in radio, television and cinema. She has been working at the research and
production company VTR since 1997, both directing her own projects and as a co-director with Enis

Newroz is the traditional Kurdish celebration of the new year and coincides with the spring equinox.
In the southeastern city of Diyarbakır, a predominantly Kurdish area, Newroz 2006 ended in
bloodshed: children were killed, arrested and detained in custody. In the wake of these tragic
events, Gözmece gives a voice to the children of Diyarbakır and their families. And in so doing
the film exposes the horrific cost of years of civil war: the physical, psychological and sociological
repercussions for local children of being ostracised by society...
Aydın Sevinç was born in Istanbul in 1979. He has attended several workshops on photography and
documentary filmmaking.

The Greeks, Urartians and Assyrians referred to them as the Colchis. The Laz protected the borders
of the Byzantine Empire; they trained warriors for the Trabzon Empire. Empress Anna Anachoutlu’s
accession to the throne was preceded by a Laz invasion. They brought about great turning points
in history. Now, for the first time ever, they are retrieved from the annals of history to become the
subject of a documentary.
Funda Özyurt Torun (1972) started working for the state broadcaster TRT when she was still
a student. As well as developing a string of international projects and documentaries, she has
produced documentary and publicity films for many different companies and institutions.

Residual Citizens tackles a highly controversial subject: it explores the relationship between the
Turkish state and its multiethnic citizens through the experiences of non-Muslim foundations. While
memories are refreshed about the lives of Turkish and Armenian neighbours, the latter who found
themselves stripped of their homes at one point, lawyers discuss the injustices involved in various
state practices against Turkey’s minorities. Documentary considers the individual experiences of
people who faced these problems and isolated incidents such as the murder of Hrant Dink and the
background to the foundations’ problems.
Şehbal Şenyurt is a documentary film director and camerawoman best known for her documentary
The Adyghe, which has been watched by over 5 million viewers. Her film about Hrant Dink, Swallow’s
Nest was well received in many different countries.

On the black sands of Dutluk Beach, local residents enjoy the final days of summer, as they have
for generations. Fisherman near Trabzon are counting their last catch and wondering how they will
survive. All try to ignore the reality that these treasured shores are doomed as trucks have begun
pouring tons of rock into the sea along the five-mile-long coast of Vakfikebir, irreversibly destroying
the shoreline to create a new highway. A culture shaped by the sea is on the brink of extinction.
