KOÇ UNIVERSI TY RESEA RCH CAPACITY
Since its establishment, Koç University has quickly become one of the leading research
universities in Turkey, attracting accomplished, high-calibre researchers from all over the world.
The vast majority (97%) of 400 faculty members have received their Ph.D. degrees from highly
selective and reputable universities in the world, including United States and Europe. Majority of
the students enrolled in the undergraduate programs are ranked within the top 1% in the National
University entrance exams. Koç University maintains an overall ratio of 11 students per instructor.
Approximately 60% of the undergraduate students receive different amounts of financial support
from the Vehbi Koç Foundation, amounting to the equivalent of 40% of the student body on full
scholarship.
Over the last ten years, Koç University has always been ranked among the top three universities
in Turkey in terms of the number of international research publications per faculty per year,
based on publications in peer-reviewed journals listed by the Institute of Scientific Information
(ISI). Since the rankings based on the number of publications usually do not take into account the
quality of publications, Koç University’s strength in research can be more visible and pronounced in
the rankings of the prominent universities in Turkey in terms of the prestigious scientific awards
and recognitions received by the faculty. In this regard, it should be noted that while the full
membership into the Turkish Academy of Sciences (having approximately 100 members) and
the Science Awards by TUBİTAK5 (The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey)
are considered as the most prestigious recognitions for senior scientists, Excellence in Research
Awards for Young Scientists by the Academy and Encouragement Awards by TÜBİTAK have been
the most prestigious awards for young and promising scientists in Turkey. Although Koç University
is quite young and small as compared to the other eminent universities in Turkey, its recognition in
research surpasses its age and size.
Koç University places a great value on innovative research and on projects involving international
collaboration.Currently, there are 365 projects from various disciplines funded by national,
European and worldwide institutions. With regard to the European Union’s 7th Framework
Program6, 18 faculty members have received the Marie Curie International Reintegration Grant
(IRG) (reversing brain drain), 7 fellow researchers have received MC Career Integration Grant
(CIG) and 3 fellow researchers have received International Outgoing Fellowship (IOF), 1 fellow
researcher has received International Incoming Fellowship (IIF) Grant, 2 researchers have
received MC Initial Training Network (ITN) and 1 researcher has received MC Industry Academia
Partnerships and Pathways-IAPP grant at Koc University.
Having such a visible faculty profile at Koç University attracts similar faculty to the available
programs and, as should be expected, maps into attracting research funds from national and
international granting bodies. These can be evidenced from the recent results of i) TÜBİTAK’s
competitive research grants applications and ii) Koç University has received an ERC Starting Grant
for the first time at 2012 in Turkey.
The University has fruitful collaborations with European universities through the financial support
provided by the Framework Programs, which enhanced the research capacity of the institution. 6
scientists from KU received L’Oréal International and National Award for female scientists.

The University is committed to excellence in research and provides state of the art research
facilities and intellectual environment to support research. Apart from the research capacity, KU is
actively participating in the Erasmus program.
Koç University Graduate School of Business participated to ERASMUS - Life Long Learning
Project “Training Future Managers to Diversity Management in Enterprises” together with CCI
Paris Ile-de-France, NHH, University of Vienna, Veolia Environnement, FIAT SEPIN and HP
Austria. The project (2014-2017) aims to be a successful experience of collaboration between
higher education and companies resulting in the production of pragmatic tools will which allow
students to obtain the right training in order to respond to companies’ needs in the field of diversity
management, by bring professors and managers will work together, exchange good practices,
elaborate case studies, disseminate information in conferences and seminars, and organize
exchanges and meetings among students and managers.
Koç University has established a variety of research centers for the purpose of conducting
scientific and application studies in specific fields, to propose policies, and to convey academic
knowledge to society in social, economic and legal fields. Apart from these, Koç University has 72
laboratories, varying in number depending on the departments at the Rumeli Feneri Campus and
at the School of Nursing. Koç University aims to promote the amassing of universal knowledge and
to have an impact on intellectual, technological, economic and social development in Turkey.

RESPONSIBILITI ES OF FACULTY
Academic responsibilities of faculty7 consist of teaching, scholarly research and service.
Depending on the nature of the appointment as indicated in the contract, faculty may be exempted
from the research responsibility. Service and/or additional teaching may be a substitute for
research obligation for administrators and instructors as indicated by their contractual agreement
with the University.
At its founding the Board of Trustees of Koç University
promulgated very explicitly that Koç University’s mission is to
develop into a “center of excellence” by widely accepted
international norms.
It is quite possible for a University to have a multiplicity of
endeavors in company with a singularity of purpose. Seeking
excellence requires application of demanding standards of
performance in two of the foremost activities of the University: teaching and scholarship. Koç
University expects its faculty members to excel in both of these mutually complementary academic
endeavors.
In order to fulfill its educational mission Koç University depends on its faculty members who are
dedicated to excellence in teaching. Teaching includes advising and mentorship in addition to
classroom instruction. Seeking excellence in teaching requires setting the right standards,
acceptance and ownership of the educational values by teachers and students, effective
performance monitoring and continuous improvement of teaching strategies. Faculty members are
expected to improve their teaching effectiveness at all levels.
2.5.1
TEACHING:
In order to fulfill its educational mission Koç University depends on its faculty members who are
dedicated to excellence in teaching. Teaching includes advising and mentorship in addition to
classroom instruction. Seeking excellence in teaching requires setting the right standards,
acceptance and ownership of the educational values by teachers and students, effective
performance monitoring and continuous improvement of teaching strategies. Faculty members are
expected to improve their teaching effectiveness at all levels.
Advising is an integral part of the teaching. Faculty members are responsible for knowing
academic rules and regulations, and University and college requirements and procedures, which
apply to their advisees, as well as with the University’s service and support departments to be able
to refer students to the services. Advisers should schedule additional advising time during
registration to help their advisees to complete their registration successfully.
7
The dedicated “Faculty Handbook” (http://vpaa.ku.edu.tr/academic/handbook) is to describe the roles, expectations and obligations of
faculty, and standards of performance. In addition to describing the academic responsibilities of faculty, this handbook explains the
procedures and criteria utilized in annual reviews, renewals and promotions. Equally important, this handbook will be a guide to identify
ways for faculty development, support and recognition of outstanding performance.

STUDENT
The driving vision of Koç University’s Office of International Programs (OIP) is to create
innovative, high quality, mutually beneficial and socially aware programming that gives students
and their institutions pathways towards high-level, effective and horizon-expanding opportunities.
Their activities concurrently strengthen exchange activity and introduce new dimensions to existing
and prospective collaborations.
OIP actualizes programming and multi-dimensional partnerships that bring the international
community and local community together.
5.1.1
STUDENT EXCHANGE AT KOÇ UNIVERSITY
The exchange students hosted at KOÇ University are consistently satisfied8 with their experiences.
In fact, KOÇ is one of the few Turkish institutions that welcome more students to the campus than
send abroad, which speaks to the caliber of our academic and non-academic offerings. The
incoming numbers are growing rapidly each year, due mainly to the word-of-mouth support we get
from international students who have come to Koç for exchange and the growing reputation of Koç
University’s excellence. Though Koç are a smaller-scale liberal arts school, the number of
incoming exchange students increase in each academic year:
These qualities speak to one of the key defining features of Koç University: the personalized care
and attention, exceptionally low student-faculty ratio, excellent academics, and plethora of nonacademic opportunities, means providing your students with a uniquely high-quality exchange
experience in Turkey.
Koç University is truly a pillar of excellence, success and strength in Turkey, perfectly positioned
for international collaboration.

SUPPORT SERVICES FOR INTERNATIONAL EXCHANGE STUDENTS
Incoming exchange students are guided through the semester, not only by OIP, but also by Koç
University’s supplementary Mentorship Program, which gives each student a key contact point to
secure their successful adjustment to life at Koç University and in Istanbul.
To further exchange students’ social and cultural immersion, the International Students’ Society
works in tandem with the OIP to create programming geared specifically toward expanding the
horizons of exchange students.
Koç University guarantees housing to all our incoming (undergraduate and graduate) exchange
students. University has designed Turkish language/culture classes specifically with exchange
students in mind, even allowing prospective students to test into "Intermediate Turkish". Koç
University incoming exchange students can maximize their stay on our lively campus with
participation in student clubs and international environment. Professors are always available for
consultation, and all the offices within the Dean of Students have an open-door policy.
Koç University Office of International Programs Incoming Students web site9 incorporates the

expected to answer these just as in a real interview. After the session, the career
counselor gives you constructive feedback to improve your performance regarding your
answers, body language and appearance.
