Everytime I hear Raffiki
crying out these words
over the Savannahs
where Simba was
born I just can’t help
getting goose bumps
all over and wipe
away warm tears
rolling down my
cheek. Raffiki in South African a
‘’Sangoma’’. A ‘Sangoma’ is able to
interpret the past and see the future;
able to heal and able to guide spiritually.
She helps Simba to become a man he has
to be,”Manay”. You might remember The
Lion King movie when you were a child.
Now 17 years later it’s back in our
cinemas in 3D. Although we performed
‘’The Lion King ‘Musical at Özel İstanbul
Koleji before, I was so excited to hear
that we were going to stage The‘Lion King
‘again this year. I just could’nt wait being
a part of this performance and helping
with
costumes,make-up,
stage
decorations and helping the kids
memorising their lines and ofcourse to see
them grow and become more confident in
their acting and improving their English
level. All English, music,art and other
teachers had the opportunity to be like
Julie Taymor who is director, costume
designer, mask/puppet codesigner and
helping with
additional lyrics in the
Broadway production. When the Disney
company first made the original movie in
1994, they did not know and expect so
many people to see the movie. It has
been almost
10 years since Disneys
opening of the Lion King in London. It’s
been a worldwide award winning musical.
The winner of 6 Tony awards even best
musical. Since they opened on the first
show more than 8 million people in 55
countries has seen the show.The story of
the Lion King is about a little cub called
Simba who is growing up in the Pridelands
and he is going to be a king. Simba’s little
footprint fitting in his father’s big footprint
tells us everything about father son and a
young boy hoping one day to fit in his
father’s shoes.
The story of the animal kingdom, the music
all the inspiration for the masks and
puppets come from Africa and musically
South Africa. Mixing fantastic songs by
Elton John and Tim Rice and African song
material from Lebo M and Marc Mancina
makes it fresh and new.The influence of
African culture and language can be seen,
heard and felt. It’s a tale that every culture
understands.It’s a story about taking
responsibility and growing up. Our young
actors at Özel İstanbul Koleji learned
responsibility
and
grew
in
their
confidence.What more can I say than
‘’Hakuna Matata ’’No worries!
