Objectives: In this study, the essential oil composition of Juniperus excelsa M. Bieb. from Turkey
were analyzed by GC and GC-MS. The qualitative and quantitative essential oil contents of the this
species was determined and compared with each other.
Materials and Methods: Juniperus excelsa specimens were collected during to flowering stage in
April, 2012, on Babadağı, at an altitude of 1700 m, Fethiye (Muğla, Turkey). Voucher specimens
are kept at the Fırat University Herbarium (FUH). Air-dried aerial parts of the plant materials
(100 g) were subjected to hydrodistillation using a Clevenger-type apparatus for 3 h to yield. The
essential oil was analyzed by using GC and GC-MS.
Results: The chemical composition of essential oils obtained by hydrodistillation of J. excelsa was
investigated by GC and GC-MS. The essential oils yield is very high and 1.7 (v/w). Ninety four
constituents were comprised the 91.7% of the total essential oil extracted from the J. excelsa. The
predominant compounds of J. excelsa were determined as α-pinene (19.7%), cedrol (17.8%), 2.4
decadienal 1-ol (4.2%) and δ-cadinene (4.2%).
Conclusion: α-pinene and cedrol were largely predominant in the oils of J. excelsa. However, the
results were discussed with the Juniperus L. genus pattern in means of chemotaxonomy and natural
products.
Keywords: Juniperus excelsa, GC-MS, essential oil, α-pinene, cedrol.
