Heading out of Sydney, we
follow the great western highway
along a ridge and into the foothills,

Kings Park, a 400-hectare expanse
of sweeping parklands and native
bush on the slopes of Mount
Eliza, giving magnificent views
of the city and Swan River.
En route to Fremantle we stop
at Cottesloe, one of Perth’s most
popular riverside beaches. Shaded
by pine trees, we pause here
to enjoy morning tea overlooking
the Indian Ocean.
Cottesloe beach
Fremantle has a far more laid-back, chilled-out feel to it than Perth. ‘Freo’
– as its known to the locals, combines a sense of heritage with a pleasantly
relaxed atmosphere and an increasingly cosmopolitan culture. Best-known
for its docks, marinas and historic sandstone buildings we head to Victoria
Quay to visit the Western Australian Maritime Museum. Nearby at Fishing
Boat Harbour, using ingredients fresh from the Indian Ocean, are some
of the state’s most popular seafood restaurants and cafés. Here we have
a traditional fish and chips lunch.
To finish off this exciting day you board a ferry to sail up the Swan River
back to Perth. One final stop at Kings Park allows time to admire the
outstanding panorama of Perth and the Swan River before arriving back
to the city late afternoon.

Cairns/Port Douglas
Excursions
in Cairns itself include the esplanade, a two-kilometre long boardwalk
overlooking the sea; a 4,000-square-metre swimming lagoon; colourful
street markets and Cairns Museum. Cairns is an ideal base from which
to explore the surrounding area – the historic town of Cooktown and the
World Heritage listed rainforests of Daintree (the oldest surviving rainforest
in the world) and Cape Tribulation to the north; Atherton Tableland to
the west and to the east the Great Barrier Reef and its islands. It is also
a centre for a wide choice of activities such as reef trips, scuba diving,
white water rafting, canoeing, horse riding, skydiving and bungee jumping.
Just an hour’s drive north of Cairns is Port Douglas. For years a sleepy
backwater, the town started its modern development in the 1980s but
still retains its original charm. Port Douglas now also offers luxury resort
hotels, an exclusive golf course, marina, shopping complex, sailing and
fishing trips to the Low Isles and the Great Barrier Reef and excursions
to Cape Tribulation and Mossman Gorge.
