International Association for the Study of Obesity
A fundamental policy shift is required to widen responsibility for the
prevention of diet, activity and weight-related ill health across the
whole of Europe's population. Only such a comprehensive approach
offers any realistic prospect of averting a public health catastrophe
for Europe and indeed for the whole world.
Notably, nutritional factors and inactive
lifestyles are implicated in
– between 30-40% of cancers
– at least one third of premature deaths
from cardiovascular diseases (CVD) in
Europe
– the pan-European ‘epidemic’ in obesity
and overweight, which in turn is linked to
maturity onset diabetes mellitus, increased
risks of CVD and certain cancers, and
premature death
– osteoporosis and its consequences,
including the increasing number of hip
fractures in the elderly (382,000 in the EU
in 1995).

date 28th January 2011, the “Directive
for the patients and their transboundary medical assistance”
The decision was taken without any
discussion, unfavourable votes from
Austria, Poland, Portugal and Romania
and an abstaining from Slovakia.
The member states have 30 months to
acknowledge the directive in national
legislation. Therefore from October
2013 it has to be operative in the
whole Union.
Spa therapies could be obtained in a
free way from European citizens in
other member states, when they are
foreseen from their medical system.
