Ihsan with the Quran – Surah An Nab’a – Class #30
Ayah 24
َ ‫َّل َي ُذوقُونَ فِي َہا َب ۡر ً۬دا َو َّل‬
٤٢( ‫ش َرابا‬
Nothing cool shall they taste therein, nor any drink. (24
Definitions (‫)المفردات‬:



(ََ‫ )ي َُذوقُون‬ (‫)ذاق‬: to taste, it can mean both tangible and intangible
o (‫)ادركَطعمهَبلسانه‬: to recognize food with the tongue
o (‫)اختبرَطعامه‬: to try food
o (‫)أحسَبه‬: to feel it
o (‫)جرب‬: to try, experience
o (‫)قاس‬: hardship
o (‫)تعرضَصعوبات‬: to face difficulties

(‫ )بَردا‬ cold
o (‫)انخفضَحرارته‬: temperature has decreased
o (‫)عكسَحر‬: it is the opposite of hot
o (‫)سهل‬: to be cool, easy-going
o (‫)ظلَوَفيء‬: shade
o (‫)نوم‬: sleep
o (‫)الماء َالجماد َينزل َمن َالسحاب َيكون َصغير‬: hail, small frozen drops of water that fall from the
clouds
(‫ ) َشرَ ابا‬ drink
o (‫)ماَشربَمنَايَنوعَعلىَايَحال‬: any kind of drink that you can drink at anytime

(،‫َل َما َيبرد َجلودهم‬:‫ل َ َشرَ ابا َ}َأي‬
َ َ ‫ل َي َُذوقُونََ َفِيهَا َ َبرْ دا َ َو‬
َ َ َ{َ ‫ )وهم َإذا َوردوها‬ they will not taste any coolness – to
cool their skin.
(‫ )ولَماَيدفعَظمأهم‬ there is nothing to avert, nothing to quench their thirst
Tafseer Ibn Kathir (‫)تفسير ابن كثير‬


(‫ )أيَلَيجدونَفيَجهنمَبرداَلقلوبهم‬ There will be no coolness in the hellfire for their hearts
(‫ )ولَشراباَطيباَيتغذونَبه‬ They will not have any cool or good drink

(‫ )ل َيذوقون َبردا َاي َنوما‬ They will not sleep, as tired as they may be, they will not be able to sleep.
May Allah (swt) protect us from the hellfire. Ameen.
The word (‫ )بردا‬in the Quran


Surah Al Anbiya 69: (‫ى َإِ ۡبرَ ٲهِي ََم‬
َٰ ‫( )قُ ۡل َنا َ َي ٰـ َنا َُر َ ُكونِى َب َۡر ً۬دا َوَ َسلَ ٰـما َ َع َل‬We (Allâh) said: "O fire! Be you coolness and
safety for Ibrâhim (Abraham)!")
o Notice it is the opposite than in Surah An Nab’a, the fire in the duniya was made cool for
Ibrahim (as), subhan Allah.
Surah An Noor 43: (َ ََ‫ل َمِن‬
َُ ‫خلَ ٰـلِهِۦ َ َو ُي َن ِّز‬
َۡ ‫ج َم‬
َُ ‫جى َسَحَ ً۬ابا َ ُثمَ َي َُؤلِّفَُ َب َۡي َن َُه َۥ َ ُثمَ َي َۡج َعل ُ َُه َۥ َ ُر َك ً۬اما َ َف َترَ ى َ ۡٱل َو ۡدقََ َي َۡخ ُر‬
ِ َ ‫ِن‬
ِ ‫أَلَمَۡ َ َترََ َأَنَ َٱّللََ َي ُۡز‬
ۡ ‫َالَفِيہَاَمِنََبَرَ ًَ۬دَ َفيُصِ يبََُبِهِۦَمَنَ َي َشا َُءَ َوي‬
‫ص ٰـ َِر‬
ًَ۬ ‫جب‬
َ ‫َص ِرفُ َُهَۥَعَنَمنَ َي َشا ُءََََۖي َكا َُدَ َس َناَب َۡرقِهِۦَي َۡذهَبََُبِ ۡٱۡلَ ۡب‬
ِ َ‫( )ٱلسمَا َِءَمِن‬See you not that
Allâh drives the clouds gently, then joins them together, then makes them into a heap of layers, and
you see the rain comes forth from between them. And He sends down from the sky hail (like)
mountains, (or there are in the heaven mountains of hail from where He sends down hail), and
strike therewith whom He wills, and averts it from whom He wills. The vivid flash of its (clouds)
lightning nearly blinds the sight. [Tafsir At-Tabarî].)

Surah Al An ‘am 70: (َ‫َتَلَ ۡيسَََلَهَاَمِن‬
َۡ ‫لَ َن ۡفسََُ ِبمَاَ َك َسب‬
ََ ‫ِّرَبِ ِهۦَۤأَنَ ُت ۡب َس‬
َۡ ‫َو َذ َِرَٱلذِينَََٱت َخ ُذوَْاَدِي َنہُمََۡ َلع ًِ۬باَ َو َل ۡه ً۬واَ َوغَر ۡت ُه َُمَ ۡٱلحَ ي َٰوَةَُٱلد ُّۡنيَاََۚ َو َذڪ‬
ً۬
ُ
َ‫ِّنَحَ مِيمًَ۬ َ َو َع َذابَ َأَلِي َُم َ ِبمَا َ َكا ُنوَْا‬
َۡ ‫اب َم‬
َ َ‫ك َٱلذِينََ َأ ۡبسِ لُوَْا َ ِبمَا َ َك َسبُو ْاَۖ َلَهُمَۡ َ َشر‬
ََ ‫ل َلَ َي ُۡؤ َخ َۡذ َم ِۡنہَاَۗ َأ ُ ْولَ ٰـ ِٮ‬
ًَ۬ ‫ِلَڪُلَ َع َۡد‬
َۡ ‫ِيع َ َوإِن َ َت ۡعد‬
ًَ۬ ‫ل َ َشف‬
َ َ ‫ِىَ َو‬
ًَ۬ ‫ون َٱّللَِ َ َول‬
َِ ‫ُد‬
ۡ
ُ
ََ‫( )يَكفرُون‬And leave alone those who take their religion as play and amusement, and whom the life of
this world has deceived. But remind (them) with it (the Qur'ân) lest a person be given up to
destruction for that which he has earned, when he will find for himself no protector or intercessor
besides Allâh, and even if he offers every ransom, it will not be accepted from him. Such are they
who are given up to destruction because of that which they have earned. For them will be a drink of
boiling water and a painful torment because they used to disbelieve)
َ َ‫( )هُوََ َٱلذِىَ َأ‬He it is Who sends down
 Surah An Nahl 10: (ََ‫اب َ َوم ِۡن َُه َ َشجَ ًَ۬ر َفِي َِه َ ُتسِ يمُون‬
ًَ۬ َ‫ل َمِنََ َٱلسمَا َِء َمَا ً۬ءَۖ َل ُكم َم ِّۡن َُه َ َشر‬
ََ ‫نز‬
water (rain) from the sky; from it you drink and from it (grows) the vegetation on which you send
your cattle to pasture)
o This is drink from the sky – which is rain water.

ُ ‫جَمِنََب‬
ۡ ‫تَ َف‬
 Surah An Nahl 69: (ََ‫اسََۗإِن‬
ًَ۬ َ‫ُطونِهَاَ َشر‬
َُ ‫لَرَ بِّكََِ ُذل ُ ً۬لََۚي َۡخ ُر‬
ََ ‫ٱسلُكِىَ ُس ُب‬
َِ ‫لَٱلثمَرَ ٲ‬
َِّ ‫ُثمََ ُكلِىَمِنَ ُك‬
ِ ‫ابَم ُّۡخ َتلِفََأَل َوٲ ُن َُهَۥَفِي َِهَشِ َفا َءَلِّلن‬
ً۬
ََ‫كَ َۡلَي ََةَلِّ َق ۡومًََ۬ َي َت َفكرُون‬
ََ ِ‫"( )فِىَ َذٲل‬Then, eat of all fruits, and follow the ways of your Lord made easy (for you)."
There comes forth from their bellies, a drink of varying colour wherein is healing for men. Verily, in
this is indeed a sign for people who think.)
o Drink will come out from the bellies of the bees – which is honey.
 Surah Al Kahf 29: (َ ‫ط َبِ ِہمَۡ َ ُسرَ ا ِدقُهَاَۚ َ َوإِن‬
ََ ‫ق َمِن َر ِّب ُكمََۡۖ َ َفمَن َ َشا ََء َ َف ۡلي ُۡؤمِن َ َومَن َ َشا ََء َ َف ۡلي َۡكفُ ۡرَۚ َإِناَ َأَ ۡع َت ۡد َنا َلِلظ ٰـلِمِينََ َ َنارا َأَحَ ا‬
َُّ َ‫ل َ ۡٱلح‬
َِ ُ‫َوق‬
ُ ‫ِيثوَْاَ ُيغ‬
ُ ‫( )ي َۡس َتغ‬And say: "The truth is from your Lord." Then
‫َتَم ُۡر َت َفقا‬
َۡ ‫لَي َۡش ِوىَ ۡٱلوُ جُو َهََۚبِ ۡئسَََٱلشرَ ابََُ َوسَاء‬
َِ ‫َاثوَْاَبِمَا ًَ۬ءَ َك ۡٱلم ُۡه‬
whosoever wills, let him believe, and whosoever wills, let him disbelieve. Verily, We have prepared
for the Zâlimûn (polytheists and wrong-doers), a Fire whose walls will be surrounding them
(disbelievers in the Oneness of Allâh). And if they ask for help (relief, water) they will be granted


water like boiling oil, that will scald their faces. Terrible is the drink, and an evil Murtafaq (dwelling,
resting place)!)
ً۬
ً۬ ۡ ‫( ) َع ٰـلِ َيہُمَۡ َثِيَابَُ َسُن ُدسَ َ ُخ‬Their
Surah Al Insan 21: (‫َاورََ َمِن َفِض ًَ۬ة َ َو َس َق ٰٮهُمَۡ َرَ ُّبہُمَۡ َ َشرَ ً۬ابا َ َطهُورا‬
ِ ‫ض َر َ َوإ ِ ۡس َت ۡبرَ قَۖ َ َو ُحلُّوَْا َأَس‬
garments will be of fine green silk, and gold embroidery. They will be adorned with bracelets of
silver, and their Lord will give them a pure drink)
o Imagine it is Allah (swt) who will give the dwellers of paradise a pure drink, subhan Allah.
What is the impact (‫ )اآلثار‬on faith for this ayah?

Just as you are responsible to choose what kind of ‘drink’ you want in the duniya, choose your
‘drink’ for the akhira.
