Economic History of the Ottoman Empire
Office Hours : Atatürk Institute, Tuesday 13.00-14.00.
This
economic
monetary
from the
course will cover the basic themes in Ottoman
history. The emphasis, however, will be on
and financial institutions and their evolution
14th through the 19th centuries.
The Ottoman Empire stood at the crossroads of
intercontinental trade at the dawn of the era of
industrial capitalism. Through a detailed examination
of the Ottoman currencies, its monetary and financial
institutions from the Balkans to Northwest Africa, this
course will demonstrate the complexity of these
arrangements and their evolution in response to both
local developments and global economic forces. Currency
debasements, inflation and the ensuing popular
opposition will be studied in a political economy
framework. The course will also provide insights into
social and political history.
The basic requirements for the course are :
- regular attendance (10 percent)
- one mid-term examination (40 percent) and
- a final examination (50 percent).
