Fezalar Educational Institutions
Albert ‘Rabbit’ Kekai could surf when he
was five. Now, 80 years later, he can still surf
and he can still win competitions. Rabbit is a
great-grandfather, but he is still fit. ‘The water is
so good,’ he says. ‘It keeps me young.’
Albert got the nickname ‘Rabbit’ because
he was fast. He says that he could run the 100
metres in 9.6 seconds. When he was six, he
could already ride the big waves with older
boys. In those days, the surfboards were very
long and heavy but Rabbit could control the
board with his quick footwork. Today’s best
surfers can’t use those heavy old surfboards.
He taught many of Hollywood’s most famous
actors to surf- stars such as Gary Cooper and
Kirk Douglas. More recently, he taught Kirk’s
son, Michael Douglas. Rabbit says Michael
learned quickly. He could surf after only four
lessons.
Now, Rabbit Kekai still surfs every day and
he still gives lessons. He travels a lot to
competitions around the world, and his wife
Lynn often goes with him. With his fashionable
sunglasses and Bermuda shorts, he looks like a
real beach boy. He is 85 years old but he does
not plan to stop surfing. ‘I am still looking for
100,’ he says.
