Istanbul
Istanbul is Turkey’s most populous city, and its cultural and financial centre. It is located on
the Bosphorus Strait, and encompasses the natural harbour known as the Golden Horn, in the
northwest of the country.
City Overview
Istanbul is Turkey’s most populous city, and its cultural and financial centre. It is located on the Bosphorus
Strait, and encompasses the natural harbour known as the Golden Horn, in the northwest of the country.
It extends both on the European and on the Asian (Anatolia) side of the Bosphorus, and is
thereby the only metropolis in the world which is situated on two continents.
The city has many architecturally significant entities. Throughout its long history, Istanbul has
acquired a reputation for being a cultural and ethnic melting pot. As a result, there are many
historical mosques, churches, synagogues, palaces, castles and towers to visit in the city.
Istanbul is one of the most important tourism spots of Turkey. There are thousands of hotels and
other tourist oriented industries in the city, catering to both vacationers and visiting professionals.
Istanbul is also one of the world’s most exciting conference destinations and is an increasingly
popular choice for the world’s leading international associations.
Istanbul Facts
Population: 12.573.836
National status: Republic
Currency: Lira turca ( TLY )
Time zone: UTC +2
Main airports:
Atatürk International Airport
Sabiha Gökçen International Airport
Istanbul’s conference appeal developed with three separate conference and exhibition areas: The Conference Valley (Istanbul Convention &
Exhibition Centre), Istanbul Hilton Convention & Exhibition Centre, the Military Museum Cultural Centre and the Cemal Reşit Rey
Concert Hall; The Airport & Exhibition District (150,000 m2 (1.6 m sq ft) of exhibition space around the CNR International Expo Centre);
and the Business & Financial District (with many distributed centres). These cluster areas feature a combination of accommodation, meeting
facilities, and exhibition space. They can be used individually, or collectively through transportation with
the Istanbul metro, and are linked together for accommodating events with 10,000 or more participants.
Cultural activity, tourism and commerce are expected to remain important in the life of the city. However, major challenges loom ahead, such
as demographic growth, traffic congestion, disorganized housing construction, the restoration of historic buildings and the planning of a 3rd
motorway through the Bosphorus.
Daily life in Istanbul is colourful and vibrant and continues to bustle side by side with many carefully protected Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman
monuments. Istanbul is often considered the capital of Turkey in terms of commerce, entertainment, culture, education, shopping, tourism and art.
More than half of the population lives and works on the European side. The large number of people living in the residential areas on the Anatolian
side use bridges and ferries to commute to work in a city that has been one of the most popular destinations for voyagers throughout history.

City Areas
The main areas for foreigners in Istanbul are Etiler, Rumelihisarı,Bebek,Sariyer and Beyoglu-Cihangir
in İstanbul for foreigners.
ETILER: Etiler is a district on the European
side of Istanbul, and officially a quarter
within the borough of Besiktas, located
close to the business districts of Levent and
Maslak.
Etiler is famous for its upmarket cafés, pubs,
night clubs, restaurants, gyms, coiffeurs,
fashion shops and shopping malls, such as
Akmerkez and Mayadrom Uptown. It is
a favourite district among Istanbul’s elite.
Apartments have gardens and garages. The
quarter also has many villas and private
residences.
The quarter’s architecture style is modern.
The area is family friendly.
BEBEK: Bebek is one of the wealthiest
neighbourhoods of Istanbul. It is located on
the European shores of the Bosphorus and
is surrounded by other wealthy districts such
as Arnavutkoy,Etiler and Rumeli Hisarı.It
falls within the boundaries of Besiktas district
of Istanbul. The direct translation of the word
“Bebek” Turkish is “Baby”.
Bebek was a popular residential district under
the Ottoman rule. It’s population reflected
the multi-diverse society which is still visible
today in Bebek’s historic buildings.
Important and historic buildings or sites in
Bebek neighborhood are: Bebek mosque
from 18th-19th century, Yilanli Yali (snake
mansion) from 19th century, Kavafyan
Mansion from 18th century, Ayse Sultan
woods and kiosk, Ayios Haralambos
Greek Ortodox church from 19th century,
Kayalar Mescid (small mosque), Asiyan
Park and Tevfik Fikret museum, Asiyan
cemetary, Bebek Hotel from 1965, and a
small wooden ferry pier. Just passed Bebek
and Asiyan, you can visit the impressive
Rumeli Fortress.
The Bosphorus University is located on
the hills of Bebek and is one of the best
universities Turkey.
Istanbul Resource Guide
The university was established in 1971 after the
conversion from the Robert College, founded
in 1863 by an American missionary and named
after Christopher Robert. The Robert College
still operates today as a highly appreciated
highschool and is located between Arnavutkoy
and Kurucesme neighborhoods, overlooking
the Bosphorus.
The quarter has cafes and restaurants. The
inhabitants can go to the gym Bogazici
University and they can go shopping to
Akmerkez in Etiler. The area is family
friendly.
BEYOGLU - CIHANGIR: is a district located
on the European side of İstanbul, Turkey,
separated from the old city by the Golden
Horn.
The quarter is a major entertainment and
shopping district for people from all sorts of
ages and backgrounds in Istanbul. The main
thoroughfare running into the neighborhood
from Taksim Square, is the Istiklal Caddesi.
This historical and attractive thoroughfare
is a pedestrianised solid mile of shops, cafés,
patisseries, restaurants, pubs, winehouses
and clubs, as well as some of the city’s
best bookshops, theatres, cinemas and art
galleries. Much of İstiklâl has a 19th century
metropolitan character, and the avenue is lined
with elegant Neoclassical and Art Nouveau
buildings. A large restoration movement was
initiated in the 1990s, and many of these
historic buildings have been repaired and
restored, even though some of them are still
in various states of decay. The nostalgic tram
which runs on İstiklal Avenue, between Taksim
Square and Tünel, was also re-installed in the
early 1990s with the aim of reviving the historic
atmosphere of the district.
SARIYER: Sarıyer is the northern-most
district on the European side of Istanbul
,going right up to the Black Sea, an area
blessed with coastline and lush forest.
The Sarıyer district is a huge area comprised
of the villages on the European shores of the
Bosphorus from Rumelifeneri, down through
Tarabya, Yenikoy, Istinye , Emirgan to
Rumelihisarı, in other words most of the
Bosphorus. Sarıyer also administers the Black
Sea coast to the west of the mouth of the
Bosphorus including the village of Kilyos..
Her neighbours are Eyup to the northwest,
Besiktas to the south and Sisli to the west.
The Bosphorus communities of Sarıyer
include Emirgan which is another former
retreat from the city, with a rich green hillside
behind. Now some villas have been built in
the woods, but Emirgan is still green. There is
a lovely square in the centre, shaded by huge
plane tree, with a cafe in the middle.
Home to the Sakip Sabanci Museum. There
are big villa sites in Zekeriyaköy village of
Sariyer.
Sarıyer itself - is still a traditional rural,
working-class Turkish town, lacking in
infrastructure, it is relaxed, friendly and has a
high proportion of retired residents. You will
see them taking long walks along the seafront.
It has a small harbour where fishing is still
practiced and therefore a fish market and a
long line of famous fish restaurants. There are
also a variety of cafés, kebab houses and bars,
where many of İstanbul’s city residents come
to eat and drink at the weekends.
Cihangir is one of the main districts of Beyoglu
, in Istanbul. This distrcit has many narrow
streets, a park and street cafes . It is between
Taksim and Kabatas (Besiktas).
The quarter has historical apartments and
small flats with two bedrooms. The area is less
preferable for families it is mostly preferable
for single’s.

Babysitting
Your Local Counsellor can assist you in sourcing candidates with references for you to interview.
Household help is readily affordable in Turkey and even those on a modest income often hire the services of a maid. Daily or weekly cleaning
of your house is sometimes done by the the doorman’s wife or by her relatives. Or you can get help from your neighbors. To ensure the safety
of yourself and your belongings, when hiring someone new, you would be well advised to use referrals from friends and colleagues. Maids are
paid on a daily basis, not hourly.
Companies specializing in house cleaning are usually used after renovation or decoration and for furniture and carpet cleaning purposes.

Groceries and Supermarkets
For the most part, groceries are cheaper than most of Europe and USA. Most of the products are excellent
quality, fresh and there is a lot of choice.
Supermarkets are usually open from 7.30am until 7.30pm on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Wednesdays they close around 3pm
and are closed on Sundays. Starting from June to August it is common for most shops to have a siesta, however the supermarkets usually remain
open during this period.

Pharmacies
Pharmacies (Eczane in Turkish) are open from 09:00 - 19:00 on weekdays and Saturdays.
They are closed on Sundays but there is always one open 24 hours in every neighbourhood. Every pharmacy will have a display in its window
(which is posted each evening, on Sunday, and on statutory and religious holidays) listing the name and location of the guard pharmacy (Nöbetçi
Eczane).
Such a system ensures that during crucial moments you will always be able to find one open pharmacy in your neighbourhood. You can find
the address and phone number of the guard pharmacy in your area from the web address: http://eczane.tr.net
The sign of pharmacies is “E” which is the first letter of “Eczane”.

Postal Services
Major post offices in tourist areas are open 8.00 to 24.00, Monday to Saturday and 9.00 to 19.00 on
Sundays. Small post offices have the same hours as government offices.
Postane is the post office in Turkish. To buy stamps, send your mail, fax or parcel, or to send and receive or change your money, don’t forget
this word. Turkish post and telephone offices are easily recognizable by their PTT and Türk Telekom signs.
Other PTT services
It is possible to exchange money at some PTT branches at the current international exchange rate. International postal orders and travelers checks
can also be exchanged. An express postal service Acele Posta Servisi APS operates from Turkey to 72 other countries for letters, documents and
small packages. Moreover for the philatelists PTT sometimes print stamps on special days and events.
Package Pickup
Although letters, magazines and small parcels are delivered to your home or office door by a postman, sometimes you have to visit Paket Posta
(Small Package Post) directorate in Topkapı to pick up a small packet sent to you. Tipping your postman may save you from such a dreadful
trip there. If you are not found at the address given a small yellow slip will arrive with your regular mail. Then you should go to Paket Posta
office with this slip and your passport. Another person with a written authorization and a copy of your passport can also pick up the packet on
your behalf. The most difficult part is finding its address. There is a small customs charge and a late charge for packages not picked up within
the time specified.

Public Transportation
Public transportation in Istanbul varies greatly. Municipality busses, public busses, inner city and
general ships, car ferries, the tunnel, metro and suburban train systems all vary in price and have either
tokens or ticket fares to pay.
If your decision lies with living in Istanbul, it is essential that you obtain an “Akbil”, meaning smart ticket. An Akbil comes in different colours
and has a refillable battery on the end of a plastic key. It is possible to buy your Akbil at major bus stops for about 6 YTL and have it filled to
the amount you desire. There are Akbil filling stations around all major bus stops, ports and Tünel. Your Akbil is valid on all busses, ships, sea
busses, metro and tunnel systems.
It gets you various discounts, ranging from 10-25%, on all transport listed above.
Taxi (Taksi)
Taxis are numerous in all Turkish cities and are recognizable by their yellow colour and word “taksi” on top of the car.
All taxis have the letter T in their license plates. The fare shown on the meter reads according to distance travelled. Be sure that the meter is on
day rate “gündüz”, from 06:00 till midnight, that starts at 2 YTL, and 1.30 YTL per kilometre. Night rate “gece” is from midnight till 06:00
and starts at 3 YTL, and 1.95 YTL per kilometer. Please note that the passenger pays the crossing fee of the Bosphorus bridges whether travelling
to the European or Asian side.

Istanbul Resource Guide
Dolmus (Dolmuş)
Dolmus is a special service found only in
Turkey. This is a collective taxi, which follows
specific routes. It may be a car or a minibus.
Each passenger pays according to distance
travelled and can get off at specific or requested
stops. In order to get off, the passenger need
only say, “inecek var” meaning “someone to
get off here” and the dolmus stops. This is a
very practical means of transportation and
much cheaper than a taxi. You pay the fee to
the driver. Prices differ depending on distance
travelled. They usually have a sign in the lower
or upper right-hand corner of their windshield
that specifies the direction to which they will
be travelling.
The relatively cheap prices are set by the
municipality and displayed somewhere visible
within the vehicle.
Bus (Otobüs)
There are two types of bus lines in Istanbul.
- The first is run by the municipality, Belediye
Otobüsü. The busses are red, green or covered
with colourful advertisements. On these buses
you can use your Akbil, special discount cards
or tickets that you can buy around any major
bus stop.
- The second type of bus is privately run, Halk
Otobüsü. These busses are orange or blue and
again, allow you to use your Akbil, special
discount cards or, in this case, money. Tickets
are not welcome on these buses but the price
is the same.
Tünel tokens are .90 YTL and can be
bought at any of the Tünel entrances, you
can also use your Akbil. It is a common joke
for foreigners to wait for the non-existent
second stop of the Tünel Coach since
the ride seems to promise more than the
short trip up or down. www.mymerhaba.
com strongly suggests that you take your
time one day and walk down (not up!)
the famous Yüksek Kaldırım Street (High
Pavement Street) that ties Karaköy to
Beyoğlu;
it is an unforgettable experience. Tünel is
open every day from
07.00 to 21.00 (Sundays from 07:30 to
21:00).
Tramway (Tramvay)
The Istiklal Street (or Pera as it was once
known), between Taksim and Tünel, is
closed to traffic, making the old trams
the only form of transportation. You may
acquire a tram ticket before you board or
ask the conductor “nicely” to let you buy
one where you embark. You may use your
Akbil but keep in mind that there is almost
no difference between the amount of time it
takes to walk briskly or take a tram.
Another tramway line is between Kabataş
and Zeytinburnu. This 14 km line provides
fast and comfortable transport. This line was
extended to Bağcılar with its ZeytinburnuBağcılar and makes connection to the light
rail (Hafif Metro) system at Zeytinburnu
On some of the more lengthy destinations the and Aksaray stations.
double-decker buses can pleasantly surprise
you. These buses require 3 tickets if passing over Funicular
the Bosphorus bridge and 2 for other regular Taksım – Kabataş funicular railway system
destinations. The green coloured double- links Zeytinburnu-Kabataş tram and
deckers are privately owned thus require cash the Kabataş ferry docks to Taksim-4
payment and not tickets. However your Akbil Levent metro. Sea busses and ferries sail
from Kabataş to Kadıköy, Üsküdar and
is valid on these buses, as well.
Princes’ Islands. Busses run from Kabataş
to Mecidiyeköy and the Bosphrorus. The
Metro (Metro, Hafif Metro)
It is quite unfortunate that Istanbul, a city tram provides transportation from Kabataş
with a population of 10 million is home to to Eminönü and Aksaray. You can use
one of the most inadequate metro lines. There your Akbil, special discount cards or can
are three lines presently; one stretching from purchase tokens.
Kabataş to Eminönü and to Zeytinburnu via
Aksaray and another line from Aksaray to
Atatürk International Airport via Yenibosna,
passing through Otogar. The last line is a real
under ground system and connects Taksim to
4 Levent via Sisli. Your Akbil is valid here. It is
possible to obtain a discount metro card from
any of the metro stations.
Ship (Vapur)
The ships in Istanbul travel from one side of
the Bosphorus to the other or to distant points
on the same side. Please bear in mind that
prices for tokens vary for the Princes’ Islands
ships or Bosphorus cruises.
Motorboat (Motor)
These are small to medium sized boats
that travel between short distances such
as Kadıköy-Eminönü-Kadıköy, BeşiktaşÜsküdar-Beşiktaş, Karaköy-Üsküdar-Karaköy.
They are reminiscent of the Dolmuş at sea
and payment is made to the captain’s assistant
after you board. They can be found next to
ship ports.
Ferry Car (Araba Vapuru)
The car ferries that travel between Sirkeci and
Harem (every day) can be a breath of fresh air
for the driver tired of rush hour traffic. Tickets
can be purchased before boarding. There are a
number of car ferries that leave
Istanbul and travel to other city ports.
Sea Bus (Deniz Otobüsü)
The fastest way to travel in the city. It is ideal if
you need to bridge distant destinations such as
Bostancı-Bakırköy, or Kadıköy-Sarıyer. There
are, again, many that go to other city ports and
to the Islands. You can purchase tokens at the
sea bus ports or use your Akbil for discount.
Suburban Train (Banliyö Treni)
There are suburban trains travelling from
Sirkeci on the European side and from
Haydarpaşa on the Anatolian side. They can
be an alternative when traffic is an issue but
it is best to remember that since these trains
are the most affordable way to travel longer
distances, they can be extremely crowded,
dirty and not very preferable. Tickets can be
bought at the station. Monthly discount cards
are also available. You can also use your Akbil
on these trains.
Tunnel (Tünel)
It is the easiest way to get from Karaköy to
Beyoğlu, instead of climbing the steep streets.
The coaches were pulled by horses when it was
first opened to the public in 1875 but today it
is pulled by electricity. The

GRAND BAZAAR AND EGYPTIAN
BAZAAR
Grand Bazaar and Egyptian Bazaar
are real live markets filled daily (except
Sunday) with both Turks and tourists. In the
Grand Bazaar, walk north along Yaglikcilar
Caddesi “Street of the HandkerchiefSellers” the main north-south street in the
bazaar. Eventually you will exit the bazaar at
the Örücüler Kapisi (door, gate). Continue
walking north along the short, narrow
street until the end, where you jog right-left
to continue walking north and downhill on
Çarsi Caddesi “Market Street”, a broader
street choked with both vehicular and
pedestrian traffic.
Çarsi Caddesi is filled with shoppers, porters
carrying huge loads, cars and trucks trying to
deliver goods to the shops, which sell beads,
firearms, luggage, mosque decorations,
apparel—anything
and
everything.
Longmarket Street
(Uzunçarsi Caddesi)Continue straight
on downhill (north) on Çarsi Caddesi
to its narrower continuation, Uzunçarsi
Caddesi (oo-ZOON-char-shuh jah-dehsee, “Longmarket Street”), lined with shops
selling turned wood, kitchen items, new
and used clothing, toys, backgammon sets,
and everything imaginable.
Follow Uzunçarsi Caddesi all the way
to the bottom of the hill, where it comes
right to the exquisite little Rüstem Pasha
Mosque(Rüstem Pasa Cami-serifi, 1561),
which few tourists see. It was built by
Süleyman the Magnificent’s grand vezir/
best friend/son-in-law Rüstem Pasha. The
coloured tiles inside are the most beautiful
in Istanbul. Don’t miss it!You may not
recognize the mosque as such, but in fact it
is that building right at the northern end of
Uzunçarsi Caddesi. Look a bit to the left to
find the doorway leading to the stairs up to
the mosque. If you can’t find it, ask anyone
Istanbul Resource Guide
“REWS-tehm pah-shuh?” and they’ll point
the way to you.
After visiting the mosque, come down the
steps, through the door and turn left/east (if
you were coming down Uzuncarsi Caddesi
you’d turn right/east) and walk along Hasircilar
Caddesi (“Street of the Mat-makers”), with
shops selling coffee, tea, hardware, paper,
dried fruits and nuts, spices, etc.
Egyptian (Spice) Bazaar
Soon you’ll come to the Egyptian Bazaar (Misir
Çarsisi, also called the Spice Market). Inside,
the jewellery and tourist shops are taking over,
but there are still lots of shops selling dried
fruits, nuts, teas, spices and natural remedies.
Outside, in the surrounding streets, it’s still a
great food market for the locals.
Over by the New Mosque (Yeni Cami,
yeh-NEE jah-mee) are shops selling seeds,
gardening supplies, caged birds, etc., and
there’s always a lively street market, even on
Sunday.
Have a look inside the Yeni Cami, right by the
southern end of Galata Bridge, a great imperial
mosque founded by Valide Sultan Safiye, the
queen mother of Sultan Mehmet III in 1597,
and completed by another queen mother,
Turhan Hatice, six sultans later (1663).
The Yeni Cami and Egyptian Bazaar are in
Eminönü, with the Galata Bridge leading
north across the Golden Horn to Beyoglu.
Ferryboats go from the Eminönü docks to
Asia and up the Bosphorus. The tram line
takes you back to Sultanahmet, or across the
Galata Bridge to Karaköy and the Tünel to
take you uphill to Istiklal Caddesi; or you
can continue on the tram along the European
shore of the Bosphorus to Kabatas.

Istiklal Street
Istiklal Street is the meeting place for the
lovers and friends in Taksim. The district
starts with the statute of Ataturk in Taksim
Square. The prominent landmark of Taksim
Square is the Marmara Hotel, a tall building
which is another meeting place for the
people. Istiklal Street is a pedestrian street
which is approximately 3-4 km. long. The
cobber stone street reminds one of the old
days. There are cosy cafés, restaurants, shops,
bookstores, movie theatres and music stores
on this street.

Housing FAQ
1. What can I expect to find in an unfurnished, a semi-furnished or a furnished property?
An unfurnished property will include kitchen stove and furnishings, bathroom fixtures and furnishings.
Furnished properties are quite common, and can include anything from the basics such as kitchen furniture, table, chairs, beds, and bathroom
furniture to everything you could possibly require in a property. Soft furnishings are frequently included. A fully furnished property of suitable
expatriate level frequently includes dishwasher, washing machine and tumble dryer, smaller/supplementary furniture, decorations, garden
equipment, cable TV, ADSL or ISDN phone lines, alarm systems.
Your Relocation Coordinator will confirm whether or not the property has these facilities
2. What sort of flexibility will I have to negotiate rent or furnishings?
It is always worth trying to offer a slightly lower figure than the asking price or request to have other furniture installed or work done on
the property. Generally, if the requests of a prospective tenant are high and costly, the landlord will agree to do the works requested with an
increase in the rent. It is not likely that a landlord will agree to undertake work on the property, install extra furniture and lower the price.
3. How many properties will I be shown?
This depends on the Relocation Package you have; Our Basic Package includes 8 properties, Standard and Executive Packages include 15
properties. You will be told at the outset how many properties you will be shown or how much time you have available to do the house
hunting. The properties provided will be as close to your ‘Needs Analysis’ description as possible according to what is available on the market
at the time.
4. How can I secure a property that I choose?
There is no pre-contract required, although at times a real estate agent will accept a holding deposit ( approx 5% ).
A contract is agreed upon and signed by both parties , relevant payments are to be made. A contract does not have to be drawn up by a
lawyer.
5. What costs are involved in renting a property?
Real Estate Agency fees are 12% annual rent ( paid by tenant ) - Security deposit: usually 1month rental value - Rent is usually paid
monthly.
6. What other expenses should I expect to pay?
The expenses of usage or the utility fees (such as: gas, electricity, water, sewage, telephone) are almost always to be paid in addition to the
rental fee. Exceptions may occur in those residences in apartment buildings (apartment), where the utility fees, such as garbage disposal,
cleaning, security, swimming pool and garage usage, heating are part of the condominium fee.
Most apartment buildings will also have a superintendent referred to as “Super”. He takes care of maintenance, garbage disposal and, twice
a day, will inquire if you need minor errands, such as milk, bread, etc.
40
Istanbul Resource Guide
7. What is the process flow to rent a property?
Once a property is selected, EMC Network will negotiate on your behalf. When an agreement has been reached, a legally valid contract is
prepared. An appointment is arranged for the tenant (or company representative) and landlord to sign the contract. The contract is read
through and the EMC Network’s Local Counsellor will translate as necessary.
8. What chance do I have of receiving my full deposit back when I leave the property?
Provided that the property and any furnishings are returned in the state in which they were initially rented (EMC Network will ensure a thorough
inventory is taken of the property and furnishings upon entry) and the correct notice period is served to the landlord, EMC Network will be
able to negotiate a full deposit return when you vacate the property.
9. What responsibility do I have as a tenant towards maintenance of the property?
In Turkey the tenant is responsible for general maintenance , it must be clearly specified in the contract the level of responsibility that falls
upon the tenant/landlord.
10.Can I make any alterations to the property?
Only with written permission from the landlord.
Small changes (e.g. hanging of towel rails in the bathroom) may be made but the property is to be handed back in exactly the same state it was
consigned. Therefore, any holes made in the walls must be filled and painted over before leaving the property, unless a different agreement
is made with the landlord.
In case alterations have been made to improve the property without the written permission of the landlord, the landlord has the right not to
reimburse any expenses the tenant has had in relation to the work. In cases where the landlord does not approve the changes made, he/she
has the right to require the tenant to put the property back into its original condition.
11. What if I need to terminate the lease early?
EMC Network will ensure a diplomatic break clause is inserted into the contract for the protection of the tenant. In the contract it is often
possible to include a notice period even as short as 1 month.
The Deposit shall be returned to the Lessee upon return of the premises and cost settlement, usually within 15 days from the date the
Agreement is terminated or it will be used as the payment for the last months of lease with the mutual agreement of both parties.
