STATEMENT OF RESEARCH INTEREST
Postdoctoral Research:
Title: Investigation of Potential Techniques for Damage Monitoring in Historic Tapestries
Research Abstract: Tapestries and other large wall hangings are of major historic and cultural significance
and form an integral part of the interior of many historic houses. They are large and heavy and while they are
on continuous display damage may be caused, not only because of their vulnerability to the environment but
also through the stress imposed by their own weight. Textile conservators understand the chemistry of fibres
and dyes and the way they interact with the environment. They routinely monitor and control the environment
to enhance the long-term preservation of tapestries and other artefacts. Although they are experienced in
visually assessing textiles for evidence of their inherent response to the stress caused by hanging, they have
never been able to quantify this damage. The development of effective monitoring techniques will enable
areas of degradation to be identified before it is visually apparent that damage is occurring. The development
of such techniques will mean that the optimum time for conservation treatment can be predicted and different
methods of treatment can be evaluated.
Philosophy of Doctorate (PhD) Research:
Title: Damage Identification in Beam-like Structures by Vibration-based Analysis and Artificial Neural
Networks
Research Abstract: Laminated composites and sandwich structures are being increasingly used in different
engineering applications, especially in aeronautical, marine and offshore structures where high stiffness,
lightweight, good corrosion resistance and temperature stability are the primary issues. During their service
life, these structures experience extreme loading and harsh environmental condition leading structural
damage that significantly reduces the mechanical strength and causes an overall performance degradation
in the structure. Therefore, localisation and quantification of the damage in real time so as to maintain the
performance of the structure is one of the promising research areas in engineering applications. Since the
determination of the severity and the location of the damage is an inverse, non-linear and non-unique
problem, an intelligent algorithm is needed to perform the damage detection analysis. This research aims to
develop a damage detection algorithm, which uses vibration-based analysis data obtained from beam-like
structure to locate and quantify the damage by using artificial neural networks. The inputs and the
corresponding outputs required to train the neural network are obtained from the finite element analyses for
different vibration modes of the beams. The designed multi-layer feed-forward back-propagation neural
networks are trained by using different damage scenarios. After validation of the neural networks, new
damage cases are introduced and neural networks are tested for the location and severity predictions. The
results from the neural network depict that severity and location of the damage can be predicted by using as
input the global (natural frequencies) and the local (strain or curvature mode shapes) dynamic behaviour of
the structure.
Master of Science (MSc) Research:
Title: Wing Structural Characteristics of a Medium-Range Transport Aircraft
Research Abstract: The analysis of aircraft structures is one of the most important and challenging issues
that an aeronautical engineer faces. The methods of structural analysis are two types, namely analytical and
numerical methods. Analytical methods provide closed-form solutions only at certain relatively simple cases
and practically cannot be used in the analysis of complex structures. The finite element method, which is a
numerical procedure, is most widely used to solve various structural mechanics problems as a powerful and
accurate analysis tool. In this thesis, wing structural characteristics of a medium-range transport aircraft are
investigated by using a finite element package called I-DEAS (Integrated Design Engineering and Analysis
Software). The three dimensional solid model of the wing is constructed and thereafter by using one and
two-dimensional finite elements, a mixed mesh is generated on the model. After the application of the
boundary conditions, the dynamic and static analyses are performed and the solutions for the wing are
obtained for with and without fuel cases. The results are presented in terms of the natural frequencies and
mode shapes for the dynamic analysis and the displacements and stresses for the static analysis. These
results are further analysed in order to find the effect of the fuel and to investigate the behaviour of the wing.
