Throughout
Germany the
old and the

harmony. Although
one of the world’s
leading industrial
nations, picturepostcard Germany
is still much in
evidence – glass

buildings are likely
to reflect the
ornate towers
of a mediaeval

lines and highways.

Explore Berlin, once again the capital of a united Germany, where the
contrast between east and west is still most obviously seen; discover
Frankfurt, one of Europe’s major financial and shopping centres; venture
westwards to Düsseldorf, nicknamed the Paris of Germany, with its flair
for fashion and style and visit nearby Cologne with its cathedral, perhaps
the most magnificent Gothic church in Christendom. You can also head
north, towards the great seaport of Hamburg or south to Munich, the
Christmas market
forests and castles, palaces and abbeys seemingly untouched by time.
The people of Germany have a liking for the good things, standards that
are reflected in every aspect of life. Hotels are excellent, public transport
is clean and reliable, entertainment is exciting and varied and food
universally good.
Pavement cafés (open-fronted in the summer and glassed-in during
the winter), smart bistros, beer-halls and wine taverns may be found
throughout the country, whilst top-class restaurants serve food from
around the world.
As you might expect from a land of such diversity, there are holidays to
suit just about everybody. You can join in the fun at a beergarden or in
a wine cellar; take a cruise on the Rhine or Danube; investigate the wealth
of museums and art galleries; take to the waters at Baden-Baden; ski
in the Alps or cycle along tow-paths; marvel at the magnificence of
Neuschwanstein fairy-tale castle or dance the night away in a lively
nightclub.
European countries with landscapes varying from the Alps in the south to
the beaches of the Baltic and North Seas, from the industrial heartland in
the west to the open vistas of the European plain in the east. Between
these lie vibrant cities with fabulous shopping and pulsating nightlife,
enchanting mediaeval villages, vast tracts of quiet countryside reflecting

An elegant travel experience
Railway enthusiasts maintain that the train is by far the most civilised
form of transport yet invented. Travelling aboard one of Europe’s modern
expresses at speeds of up to 300 kph – you may well find yourself in
agreement with them.
Across the continent’s extensive rail network, fast and comfortable trains
not only whisk you from city centre to city centre but can also take you
to country towns and remote villages. En route you often travel through
areas inaccessible by other means of transport, offering you a host of new
perspectives of the landscape. And those with an interest in engineering

Excursions/Hotels
Neuschwanstein Castle
and Linderhof Palace
Neuschwanstein Castle
Full-day coach excursion from Munich
Our excursion begins high in
the Bavarian hills where the
eccentric King Ludwig ll built
two extraordinary castles that are
amongst the most romantic sights
in all of Germany.
Linderhof Palace
Neuschwanstein is an idealised
mediaeval castle, built to plans
made by a theatre set designer
rather than an architect and is
situated on a rocky promontory
above a steep gorge overlooking
the lake far below.
In contrast, the rococo Linderhof
Palace is modelled along the lines of the great French palace at Versailles,
although on a much smaller scale.
We then head to the village of Oberammergau for a short shopping
break. 400 years ago the villagers, seeking deliverance from the plague,
promised that they would perform the Passion Play every 10 years.
They have done so, with only two exceptions, since 1634.
This is a coach excursion, which commences and ends at Le Méridien
Munich. It operates daily from April to October and daily except Mondays
from November to March. The excursion includes entrance fees and an
English-speaking guide.

Frankfurt
Excursions/Hotels
At Rüdesheim you will enjoy stupendous views from the Niederwald
Monument, an enormous bronze statue of Germania erected by Kaiser
Wilhelm in 1883 towering over 37 metres above the hilltop before
descending (by the optional cable car if you wish) to the valley for lunch
at a riverside restaurant.
In the afternoon, you board your Rhine steamer for a cruise along one
of the most spectacular stretches of the river to St Goarshausen. En route
you will see the Loreley Rock, a 130-metre high outcrop overlooking
the notorious Bingener Hole, where the mighty river narrows to just
115 metres.
We recommend that you do this as a full-day excursion with a rental car.
In the winter months, when steamers do not operate, you may want to
visit a castle instead.
Rhine Valley
On this unforgettable day trip you can see the Rhine River winding its
way through the Taunus hills, its gorges lined by ancient villages, whitewashed houses covered with wisteria and lacy iron balconies, needle-sharp
church spires, historic palaces, forbidding mediaeval castles perched
on top of vertical crags and terraced rows of vines. Due to its stunning
beauty, the Rhine Valley is an immensely popular holiday destination.
Castles, cathedrals, woods and vineyards, hiking trails and a romantic
river bed, all contribute to the scenery, which has inspired numerous
poets and painters.

Potsdam-Sanssouci
Palace of Sanssouci
Half-day private chauffeur-driven
excursion
Potsdam’s main attractions, its palaces
Chinese Tea House, Sanssouci Park
and parks, bear witness to the days
when the town was a summer residence
of the Prussian kings. Sanssouci
Palace and Park, built by Prussia’s
greatest monarch, King Frederick II, is
the crowning glory of this magnificent
collection. The Rococo Palace became
Frederick’s favourite refuge, where he
entertained some of the most educated
men of his time, among them the French poet Voltaire who was a frequent
guest over many years.
Our excursion takes you on an extensive tour of Sanssouci Palace with
a stroll through the magnificent gardens.
This excursion will also introduce you to the delightful town of Potsdam,
once the centre of Prussia and now the Brandenburg State capital.
Potsdam was historically a centre of European immigration. Its religious
tolerance attracted people from France, Russia, the Netherlands and
Bohemia. This is still visible in the culture and architecture of the city.
Today, the town’s reputation as a lively centre of culture and learning
is enhanced by the fascinating architecture of its historical districts –
the Dutch quarter, the Russian colony of Alexandrovka and the exclusive
residential area of Babelsberg and the many events staged in Potsdam’s
palaces.
This is a private chauffeur-driven car excursion which includes pick-up
and drop-off at your hotel, entrance fee and English-speaking guide. The
excursion operates daily except for Mondays.
