Undoubtedly, USA is the most powerful and influential
country in the world. What makes America a world
power is the spirit of entrepreneurship in this country.
The very first independent art and design university of
the USA, namely the Massachusetts College of Art
and Design that has been established 140 years ago in
Boston which is the City of Universities is the fruit of
such entrepreneurship. My daughter Melike Fatmanur
Koçak has been the student doing double major
(animation and painting) at the Massart College, and
she has successfully finished her school this year.

After a while, we have received the acceptance letter of
the university for Melike. You should see her delight… You
should see my delight and my wife’s delight. We were so
happy, because Melike was going to study at a university in
the most important country of the world, USA; but, we were worried on the other hand. USA was a far away country.
When we arrived in Boston following a twelve hours journey for the enrollment in the university, we felt both anxiety and excitement in our hearts at the same time. I remember
well how my dear Melike felt; her heart was pounding just
like the heart of a little sparrow… She was excited and shy…
SUCCESS OF A TURKISH GIRL
Five years have elapsed. Turkish
Airlines (THY) has inaugurated direct flights from Istanbul to Boston.
We took one of those flights.
THY has draped Boston with
publicity posters reading: “Boston
meets Istanbul.”
Going to Boston this time, my wife and I were both feeling joyful and excited about the graduation ceremony of our
daughter Melike.

The success of my daughter has made me proud.
A
fter a lapse of five years, I am once again in the City of Boston of the United
States. We had been here in September
2009 together with my daughter Melike
Fatmanur Koçak and my wife Ayşe. Melike was
accepted by one of the most old line state universities, Massart College, with its 140 years
history. This university takes place among the
leading educational institutions of the USA. One
of the primary qualifications of the students accepted to the university is being talented in the
field of art. Melike has been drawing since she
was two years of age. During her studentship
at Üsküdar Anatolian High School, she had
worked art in the workshops of the teachers
of Mimar Sinan University. When she graduated from high school, her teachers had
prompted her to the USA for her education.
I remember as yesterday… We had sent her
previous oil paintings by cargo to Boston upon
request of MassArt College.

Melike had successfully graduated from MassArt College… And what
is more, she had succeeded to complete double majors, namely animation and painting departments at the same time. The graduation ceremony has been conducted on May 23, Friday, at the Blue Hills Bank Pavilion
on the shore of Boston Harbor. A sumptuous ceremony was held in a
gigantic tent. As the ceremonial ground was just beside the ocean, we
were feeling cold because of the high sea breeze. However, the graduation excitement of Melike, and the atmosphere of the ceremony have caused us to forget the shivering. After the ceremony, we warmed by some
hot coffee.
In MassArt College, almost students from every country receive education. Among the graduates of the year 2014, Melike was the only Turkish
student. When each student was invited on the stage, other students were crowing. I was on full alert, my camera in my hand. When Melike’s
name was announced and she was invited on the stage in order to get
her diploma, I was able to press the shutter a few times. It was the most
thrilling moment of my life. I could photograph her, when she raised her
hands on the stage and made the victory sign after five years efforts…

Oh my, I am so happy… That was the
moment I have prayed God for. My dear
Melike has a golden heart which rejoices and
weeps for others. She has been gifted by
the God. My wife and I have given our all
and been patient in order to allow our daughter to further improve her talent in the
most powerful country of the world through
a decent education. Melike in no more the
shy sparrow who has come to Boston five
years ago but a professional whose mind and
the heart beats for her art. I also know that her heart beats for her country. She would offer her ability, art and knowledge to bring new Melikes
in her country.
A 140 YEARS UNIVERSITY
Massachusetts College of Art And Design has been established 140 years ago being the first independent state art and design university and art
school of the Unites States of America. The founders of the MassArt have taken the liberty of dreaming of a better future for the State of
Massachusetts and they have believed that creativity was the way to achieve
this goal. The objective of the founders in establishing the “Regular Art School
of Massachusetts” was to be able to educate the students at a creative level so that this creative level orients to development of the mind, body, and
soul. The university has, in the beginning, focused on training of painting
teachers demanded by the schools in Boston while educating professional
artists, designers, and architects. Since 1873, it has proudly opened to those who are talented and have the desire for success.

B
oston is known as one of the oldest and richest cities of the
USA. It has been established by the
Native Americans at the beginning of
the 17th century, and it has been the
first immigrant receiving city of
America. The majority of those who have settled in Boston region have been
Anglicans and Puritans of English origin, and they have named the city after Boston of England. At the beginning
of the 19th century, there have been
radical changes in the population
structure of the city. The majority of the
immigrants who have come to Boston
during that period have been of Italian
and Irish origin, and instead of Protestantism, Roman
Catholicism has begun to gain weight.
Currently, Boston is known to be city where those
of Irish origin are mostly forceful in America. Although
the population of the city is only around 580 thousand,
the Boston Metropolitan Area is one of the ten biggest
population centers of the Unites States
of America with its population reaching
to 10 millions. 55% of its population
consists of Caucasian race and 25%
black race.
Today Boston is an education, health, finance, and technology center.
World famous educational institutions
such as M.I.T, Harvard University,
Massachusetts University, Northeastern
University, Boston College, and
Wellesley College are located in and
around Boston. Beth Israel Deaconess
Medical Center, Brigham Women
Hospital, Massachusetts General
Hospital, Boston Children Hospital,
Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Harvard Medical School
are the famous medical centers for which people from
all over the world come for treatment purposes.
Furthermore, the city harbors the head offices of world
famous investment funds such as Fidelity Investments,
Putnam Investments, and Wellington Management.
