Ali Akgun
Cheryl Platz
Greg Schechter
Patrick Wyatt
With a CS degree from Grinnell College, Ali
first joined a small startup developing custom
graphics & audio software and later worked
at USRobotics/3Com, developing internet
traffic routing software for cable modems and
for cellular packet networks. Ali was one of
the 12 people that started the Surface team
in Microsoft and today he runs the Software
Development and PM teams for the Surface
division. He chose Computer Science because
“it gives you so much freedom, it seems like
you can do anything with it” or it may have
been because he was not smart enough for
physics, and math seemed like too much work.
Cheryl Platz is a Senior User Experience
Designer at Microsoft, where she is
designing the next generation of automobile
infotainment systems for automakers like
Ford. Her diverse experience as a designer
and producer spans multiple industries –
she has designed for billion-dollar server
products and a variety of video games,
theme parks, and websites.
Greg Schechter has been a {Programmer,
Software Developer, Software Architect,
Software Engineer – take your pick :)} and
an Engineering Manager for 25 years at Sun
Microsystems, Microsoft, and now Facebook.
Greg’s worked on a whole bunch of different
projects and products, always keeping his
hands dirty in writing and debugging code.
After all these years he still loves coding,
learning new systems, thinking about code,
and building software systems.
As a game developer with more than 22
years in the industry Patrick Wyatt has
helped build small companies into big ones
(VP of Blizzard, Founder of ArenaNet, CTO
of NCsoft, COO of En Masse Entertainment);
lead the design and development efforts
for best-selling game series (Warcraft,
Diablo, Starcraft, Guild Wars); written
code for virtually every aspect of game
development (networking, graphics, AI,
pathing, sound, tools, installers, servers,
databases, ecommerce, analytics, crypto,
dev-ops, etc.); designed many aspects of the
games he’s shipped; run platform services
teams (datacenter operations, customer
support, billing/accounts, security, analytics);
and developed state-of-the-art technologies
required to compete
in the AAA+ game
publishing business.
Ali is presenting with Ricardo Lopez- Barquilla,
Electrical Engineer with PhD. in Digital Signal
Processing. Ricardo
runs a Design
Verification and Test
team for Microsoft’s
Surface.
Prior to Microsoft, Cheryl shipped over half
a dozen video games on multiple platforms
for Electronic Arts, Maxis, Disney Interactive
Studios, and Griptonite Games. Other past
employers include Walt Disney Parks &
Resorts and MAYA Design. Cheryl has a BS
in Computer Science and Human-Computer
Interaction from
Carnegie Mellon
University, and spent
a year in graduate
studies with CMU’s
Entertainment
Technology Center.
