Course Description
The evolution of the reforms from the Tanzimat Period to the Kemalist period is studied through the period between 1839 and 1938,
including their political, economic and social aspects.
Course Objectives
Students will be taught the importance of Industrial Revolution and French Revolution and how these transforming events had an
impact on Ottoman Empire
Students will be taught the main characteristics of the Ottoman classical system and they will be taught how the classical system
gradually evolved starting from the 17th century
Students will be taught the major socioeconomic, political, military, and cultural reforms, processes, and developments that shaped
the Ottoman Empire starting from Selim III?s reign
Students will be taught the emergence of Young Ottomans and Young Turks
Students will be taught the processes that resulted in shift of power to Committee of Union and Progress and they will be taught the
developments that led to Ottoman Empire?s participation in First World War
Students will be taught the War of Liberation and major reforms that were undertaken by the republican elite in 1920s
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, students will be able to evaluate the role of French Revolution and Industrial Revolution on transforming
empires into nation states
On completion of this course, students will be able to comprehend how French Revolution and Industrial Revolution pushed Ottoman
Empire to evaluate its economic, political and military structure
On completion of this course, students will be able to explain how Ottoman Empire transformed into Republic of Turkey
On completion of this course, students will be able to acknowledge/recognize the continuity and break that characterize the
transformation of Ottoman Empire into Republic of Turkey
