POLYTHIOPHENE AND POLYTHIOPHENE DERIVATIVES
VIAELECTROPOLIMERIZATION IN VARIOUS SOLVENTS-ELECTROLYTES
SYSTEMS
ABSTRACT:
In this work, thiophene and thiophene derivatives have been polymerized by chemical and
electrochemical ways. In electrochemical ways, constant potential electrolysis technique and
potentiodynamic technique have been applied. By using constant potential electrolysis
technique polythiophene and polythiophene derivatives have been obtained in acetonitriletetrabutylammonium tetraflouroborate as solvent-electrolyte system at fifferent conditions.
Platin plates electrodes were employed for both working and counter electrodes. Silver wire is
used as a referance electrode. The effects of monomer concentrations, electrolysis potential,
electrolysis period, electrolysis temperature and electrolytes types were investigated on
characterization of polythiophene and polythiophene derivatives. The conductivies of
polythiophene samples obtained under different conditions were measured ranging in between
2.76*10-5and 7.36*10-2 S/cm. On the other hand polythiophene and polythiophene derivatives
were characterized also with some other techniques such as FTIR, TGA, SEM and CV.
From FTIR spectrum, It has been observed that chemical structures of polythiophene and
polythiophene derivatives obtained under different conditions did not change. Electrochemical
stability and electrochemical reactivity were followed by using CV technique. Morphological
maps of polymer samples were observed from SEM indication. Mass loss of polythiophene and
polythiophene derivatives at 200 ºC, 400 ºC and 600 ºC are given in tabulated forms by using
TGA termograms. Solubility tests for some polymer samples obtained from both chemical and
electrochemical technique were done using various solvents.
