Het prominente Europalia Arts Festival zet om de twee jaar een cultuur in de kijker. Na Brazilië in 2011 en India
in 2013, is nu Turkije aan de beurt met hun rijke muziekcultuur en tradities. Het Zuiderstrandtheater is voor de
tweede maal de Nederlandse partner van het Europalia Arts Festival. Zuiderstrandtheater, Nieuwe Kerk en
theater De Vaillant presenteren onder de naam Turkish Delight Festival een reeks van bijzondere Turkse
concerten en voorstellingen waarvan meerdere exclusief te zien zijn in Den Haag.
EUROPALIA is a major international arts festival held every two years to celebrate one invited country’s cultural
heritage. This year EUROPALIA focuses on Turkey with its rich music-culture and traditions. The
Zuiderstrandtheater is the Dutch partner of the Europalia Arts Festival. Zuiderstrandtheater, Nieuwe Kerk and
theater De Vaillant present, by the name of Turkish Delight Festival, a series of extraordinary Turkish concerts
and performances of which most of them are exclusively in The Hague.

Istanbul Songs: Dilek Türkan
Dilek Türkan is een prachtige zangeres uit Istanbul, onder meer ook in het Holland Festival 2015 te horen.
Centraal in haar repertoire staat de Turkse tango, maar ook Griekse, Armeense, Joodse en Zigeunermuziek
zullen klinken. Dilek Türkan wordt begeleid door een ensemble van vier muzikanten.

Inspiring songs about the Bosphorus microcosm: in Istanbul Songs we get a glimpse of the beauty, the culture,
the people and their experiences in old Istanbul. For example, ‘Katibim’, one of the most famous folksongs in
Turkey, which tells the story of the secret relationship between a lady and her servant.

Turks Nationaal Koor / State Choir Turkey
Het Turks Nationaal Koor werd in 1988 opgericht op initiatief van Dr. Hikmek Simsek. Het koor gaf meer dan
800 concerten in landen als Italië, Israël, de Russische Federatie en Duitsland. In 2010 werd het koor
onderscheiden met een Andante Music Award - het bewijs dat dit ensemble terecht bekend staat als 'een van
de beste zangkoren ter wereld'. Het Turks Nationaal Koor heeft een programma samengesteld dat de
diversiteit en de rijkdom van Turkije weerspiegelt. Echt een aanrader voor iedere koorliefhebber.
The State Choir Turkey was founded in 1988 on the initiative of Dr. Hikmek Simsek. Under the patronage of the
Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the choir has become one of the most prominent cultural institutions in
Turkey. The choir has given more than 800 concerts in countries such as Italy, Israel, the Russian Federation
and Germany, and has more than 1000 pieces in its repertoire. Respected throughout the classical music world,
the choir was awarded an Andante Music Award in 2010, proof that it is rightly considered as ‘one of the best
choirs in the world’. The State Choir Turkey proposes an exclusive programme for EUROPALIA that mirrors the
diversity and richness of Turkey. We hear Turkish folk music, but also a taste of the Turkish contemporary
choral literature. Lastly, the choir also provides a sample of the choir’s standard European repertoire.

Whirling Dervishes: Konya Turkish Sufi Music Ensemble
Het Konya Turkish Tasavvuf Music Ensemble voert in dit concert traditionele Mevlevî rituelen uit. De Mevleviye
of Mevlevî Orde is een soefigenootschap uit Konya, de toenmalige hoofdstad van het Sultanaat van de
Anatolische Seldjoeken. Vanaf 1273 verspreidden ze zich over het hele Ottomaanse Rijk. Vandaag vindt men de
orde in zowat alle Turkse gemeenschappen over de wereld. De Mevlevî Orde is beroemd voor zijn bezwerende
draaidansen van Derwisjen of soefimonikken. Het Sama ritueel is een lichamelijke manier om het religieuze te
bereiken. De Sama ceremonie is sinds 2005 immaterieel UNESCO werelderfgoed.
In this concert, the Konya Turkish Sufi Music Ensemble and the Sama Ensemble perform traditional Mevlevi
rituals. The Mevleviye or Mevlevî Order is a Sufi order founded in Konya, the former capital of the Anatolian
Seljuk Sultante. From 1273 the order spread across the entire Ottoman Empire. Today, one can find the order
in almost all Turkish communities throughout the world. The Mevlevi Order is famous for its mesmerising
whirling dance of Dervishes or Sufi monks. The Sama ritual is a physical way to reach a higher degree of
spirituality. The dizziness felt by the Dervishes during their endless whirling at high speed, with one hand
extended to the cosmos and the other to earth, is a profoundly spiritual experience. The whirling symbolises
the way electrons and planets revolve. Since 2005, the Sama ceremony is designated as UNESCO Intangible
Heritage of Humanity.

Heimwee Liederen: Selim Dogru, Nederlands Blazers Ensemble e.a.
Zes bekende solisten/ acteurs uit Turkije en Nederland hebben koffers vol herinneringen die de gevoelens van
heimwee en gemis aanwakkeren. Vol passie zingen ze over de briefwisselingen tussen familieleden en
geliefden uit Nederland en Turkije die verhalen over dit verlangen. De zanger en zangeressen, Gülseven Medar,
Erkan Tekçi, Karsu, Esra Dalfidan, Meral Polat, en Ilda Simonian, vertolken bestaande en nieuw geschreven en
gecomponeerde liederen. Deze liederen zijn gebaseerd op volksliederen en muziek uit de verschillende
windstreken van Turkije.
Six known solists / actors from Turkey and The Netherlands have packed their bags full of memories flaming
feelings of homesickness and loss. Full of passion they sing about letters exchanged between familymembers
and loved ones from the Netherlands and Turkey that tell about these desires. The male singer and female
singers, Gülseven Medar, Erkan Tekçi, Karsu, Esra Dalfidan, Meral Polat, and Ilda Simonian, bring known and
newly written and composed songs. These songs are based on folksongs and music from different parts of
Turkey.

The Ottoman Drums: Kudsi Ergüner
Concertproject van meestermuzikant Kudsi Ergüner, een wereldautoriteit op het vlak van Ottomaanse muziek.
Ergüner – docent, performer en een van de meest virtuoze ney (Turkse rietfluit) spelers in Turkije – verdiept
zich al decennia in de oudste wortels van de Ottomaanse muziek en de invloed van Turkse, Arabische,
Perzische, Griekse, Joodse en Armeense culturen. Zijn ensemble is gespecialiseerd in improvisatie gebaseerd op
de authentieke uitvoeringspraktijk. The Ottoman Drums is de uitvoering van de Turkse kunstmuziek uit de 16de
- 17de eeuw. Ergüner breidt zijn kernensemble uit met een groot aantal gastmuzikanten. De focus ligt op de
traditionele slaginstrumenten als de nakkare, halile, kös en de davul.
A concert project by the maestro Kudsi Ergüner, a world authority on Ottoman music. Ergüner – teacher,
performer and one of the most virtuoso ney players in Turkey – has studied the ancient roots of Ottoman music
and the influence of Turkish, Arabic, Persian, Greek, Jewish and Armenian cultures. His ensemble specialises in
improvisation based on authentic performance practices. The Ottoman Drums offer us a taste of traditional
music styles: the interpretation of art music of the 16th and 17th centuries. Ergüner expands his core ensemble
with a large number of guest musicians. The focus lies on traditional percussion instruments such as the
nakkare, halile, kös et davul.
